This 1979 comedy is absolutely indispensable for fans of Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, or Andrew Bergman, who wrote the film's screenplay and went on to direct The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas. (Let's forgive him for Striptease.) Arkin is extraordinarily funny as a dentist who quickly grows skeptical about the wild claims of his daughter's future father-in-law (Peter Falk) that he is a CIA agent. When he is drawn into a bizarre adventure in a banana republic, however, he takes a different view. Arthur Hiller (Love Story) provides serviceable direction, but the real draw here is the perfect chemistry between the two leads and Bergman's weirdly comic mind. Watch for the look on Arkin's face when Falk's character tells a story about giant tse-tse flies. --Tom Keogh

Clean Buddy Movie Comedy.......2007-04-22
This is one of the classic buddy movies of its kind. The humor and satire are funny and insightful. There is no vulgarity so you can have teenagers watch this movie. This version is much better than the Michael Douglas remake by the same title. Alan Arkin is a consumate actor who displays a surban dentist in over his head. And Peter Falk is hilarious as the CIA spy or not. Alan Arkin does a great job stealing the movie as he does in many of his movies. See Alan Arkin in the movie Poppi, a tear jerker comedy with the most adorable kids.
funnyest in-laws movie i ever seen!!!.......2007-04-12
still to this day. this is the funnyest in-laws movie ever seen!!! if you like peter falk.(the colombo)you will laugh your butts out!!!with this one!!
A classic!.......2007-03-09
So much better than the 2003 version. Every time I watch this movie my face hurts from laughing.
Far Superior to the Remake.......2007-02-22
The 1979 version of The In-Laws is so much better than the pathetic remake of a few years ago, its not even funny.
What made the original so great was the screenplay by Andrew Bergman who also wrote the scripts for Blazing Saddles, Fletch and The Freshman. Bergman's script was finely tuned to the personas of Alan Arkin and Peter Falk to a degree that few screeenplays nowadays are. Falk's character was written as a dishonest version of Lieutenant Columbo that added to the fun. Perhaps no other film could take such an ungainly phrase as "serpentine, Shelly, serpentine" and provoke so much laughter with it.
Add in the on-screen chemistry of Arkin and Falk and you have yourself a comedic winner.
How could you not laugh?.......2007-01-30
I am a longtime Alan Arkin fan (since I was a kid). After Little Miss Sunshine came out I bought some of his older films for my collection. This movie is funny...better than the more recent one.
If you liked the newer film, you'll love this one. I mean, who wouldn't laugh at this??

It won't steal any thunder from the 1979 original, but this breezy remake of The In-Laws offers a few solid laughs. It's blessed by the casting of Albert Brooks as one of two imminent fathers-in-law who embark on the proverbial "wacky misadventure" on the eve of a lavish family wedding. The veteran comedian plays a podiatrist (in the dentist role originated by Alan Arkin) and Michael Douglas (in Peter Falk's role) is a deep-cover agent for the CIA, unbeknownst to Brooks or his daughter, who's about to marry Douglas's son--an event also attended by Douglas's ex-wife (Candice Bergen), who remains spiteful despite her newfound Buddhist enlightenment. As an arms dealer targeted by Douglas's latest covert operation, David Suchet matches Brooks laugh-for-laugh in the movie's funniest scenes, but one drawback can't be avoided: Douglas simply isn't funny. But while the original In-Laws was arguably overrated, this remake, for all its faults, makes for an agreeable rainy-day pastime. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Family matters. Laughing matters. They're all a matter of laugh or death as Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks play opposites thrust together by their children's wedding and by CIA agent Douglas' involvement in an arms-smuggling sting operation, plunging mild-mannered podiatrist Brooks into the world of international intrigue.

Very funny.......2006-08-24
I didn't see the original with Alan Arkin and Peter Faulk, so I have nothing to compare it with, but I thought this one was hilarious. Loved the way Michael Douglas' hair never moved, no matter what he did! I always love Candace Bergen (except maybe in MISS CONGENIALITY).
Stick to the Original..........2006-02-22
I was very disappointed with this movie. The original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin was absolutely hilarious! This one was a bomb in its own right, but next to the original, it was a downright disaster. Do yourself a favor. Spend your hard-earned money on the original movie instead of this terrible remake. You'll love it.
Seen the 1st one? Skip this one.......2005-12-15
I can't review this for those who never saw the original--but if you liked Peter Falk and Alan Arkin you'll be disappointed here. Face it Michael Douglas is not as funny as Peter Falk, not in this movie anyway. The opening scene clued me that this was not written as well as the first-- It was completely believable that Peter Falk could be too goofy to actually be an agent (Columbo?) and that made his role so much better but Michael Douglas is just not goofy enough.
I just couldn't stay interested enough to even get to any laughs. Rent the original again, you'll have much more fun.
WORST MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-23
this was one of the worst movies i had ever seen!! it was so stupid!!!!!!don't was te your time!
A Wedding Disaster.......2005-04-24
I have watched this movie so many times that I still crack up at certain parts especially when Albert Brooks decides to get in the hot tub! Albert Brooks and Michael Douglass seem like an unlikely pair but truly are one of the funniest older men together I have ever seen! Michael Douglass plays a deep CIA agent that has to decide whether to stop working for the weekend or go to his son, Mark (Ryan Reynolds), wedding. Mark is to be married to a beautiful daughter of Albert Brooks (Lindsay Sloane). The only problem is that her family has yet to meet Mark's jet packing father. Somehow Albert and Michael end up flying half way around the world and back into a world of danger. The fun really starts at the wedding rehearsal where a surprise band starts to sing the first song the couple ever sang together. I was laughing so hard the first, second, and even the third time. Though the story does die down every once and awhile the most memorable and funny scenes are with Albert, Michael, ans Ryan Reynolds. They seem to carry the story whenever it seems lacking. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of comedy!

Description
Kei and Mizuho's honeymoon summer vacation in Okinawa is interrupted when they discover that Hyosuke and the gang are vacationing there, too. Though the honeymooners can't seem to get any time alone, the buds of love begin to blossom for another unlikely couple. Things don't get any easier when they get home. Mizuho's sister, Maho and her mother, Hatsuho, visit Earth to, respectively, express their protest and delight to the newlyweds. Now Kei has to dodge the death threats of his sister-in-law and the romantic advances of his mother-in-law, as well as play cupid for his friend! Will Kei ever have the chance to say those three simple words to his teacher?
Customer Reviews:
OK, Much better.......2003-10-22
Kei is a 18 year old boy in a class full of 15 year olds because of a strange disease he calls a "Standstill" that put him in a coma for 3 years. None of his friends know this because he tries to keep it a secret.
Now after a series of pretty awkward events he finds himself married to his teacher who happens to be a young, attractive, half human Alien undercover galactic reporter. Which isn't a problem so much as keeping it a secret from everyone else. And thats just where the problems start...
For story line info read the Amazon review. I'm just going to comment on my overall impression of the disk.
The first installment was so close to the books you could've followed along page by page. This disk breaks away without breaking away from the story line (much). Kind of like this is what happened between the chapters in the book.
I didn't get into the first disk but I'm really glad I gave the second disk a try. The story is good. The gags and awkward situations are better played. And Mizuho's little sister Maho (which is the Japanese word for either witch or magic - can't remember which) was done very well and turned out to be a cute little atom bomb. I think the book series made her out to be a little older and portrayed her concern for her sister a little better. The American voice for Maho was a little strange but bearable as is Kei's voice.
The art is very good. The music is ok. The extras are pretty decent - theres a full length video to the opening song that's pretty nice.
Because of this disk I'll finish out the series.
I still highly recommend the books (manga) to this series.
Funny, but a tad more mature than the first DVD........2003-07-26
While Kei and Mizuho try to find a peaceful place for a summer honeymoon, they run into the rest of Kei's classmates. As Hyosuke tries to find out if Kei likes her or not, the rest of the gang gets into some trouble. Adult, mature trouble. While the events happen off screen the story takes a very serious twist when two of the characters make love to each other. Now they have to decide if they LOVE each other, if you get what I mean. This makes episode 6 a very serious one.
If that isn't complex enough now add the fact that Mizuho's pretty mom and [aggrivated] sister show up to check out her new Earthling husband. Maho, the sister, acts very much like Skuld from 'Oh My Goddess!' while the mom, Hatsuho, acts very much like Urd from 'Oh My Goddess!' right down to the sexy body!
funny teen aimed PG-16 anime, must see.......2003-07-21
This is PG-16 anime! man-o-man is this DVD volume funny filled with all sorts double meanings and non-stop laughs, so if your a teen into raunchy humor, this is the show for you. We first see our two fav. people Kei and Mizuho. Having a nice honeymoon, but only to have a pint sized stalker follow Kei's every move. The two love birds leave the beach and they drive along only to find all of Keis friends there to help one of the teacher w/a man powered airplane. After a fun time every one goes back the thier rooms, has a lil fun w/every one's friend beer. After that some of the teen boys go into diff. rooms and Mizuho gets a lil suprise, needless to say she was waiting for Kei to return. Hyuske also gets his own treat. Moving along we see Mizuho and Kei, battle it out w/Mizuho's very bratty younger sis, Maho. When Mizuhos mom and sister come to visit. Thier mom (Hatshu)doesn't do any thing to Maho from threating Kei ever he ever does any thing wrong to her sister. Poor Kei has to protect himself, from her. He finally is at peace when, one the friends drops a bombshell a/b the blond teen boy. Kei settles it out w/blondie, and he gets a girl friend, but Maho gets the wrong idea about the two. Now its the last episode in the DVD, and poor Kei has dealt w/his sis-in-law, and her never ending abuse. He finally gets a chance to rest, but Maho just keeps on going. She finally gets so angry w/him that she transports him to another world after you gessed it- "getting the wrong idea". She trys to kill him, but he gets so stressed out he does into a "standstill". Mizuho comes to save Kei. And has always a funny yet touching ending.
Please Teacher.......2003-07-16
Just to start off, Please Teacher is a very nicly done anime. Anyways, the first episode of the volume starts off with Kei and Ms. Kazami on their honeymoon on a southern island. They soon find out that Hyosuke, Matagu and the others are on the island too. The second episode is one of the most serious episodes I think of the whole series. Hyosuke and Kaede have to work out the feelings they have torwards each other. The second episode also deels with when Kei meets Ms. Kazami's mother and little sister. With Maho (Ms. Kazami's little sister) trying to get rid of Kei and Hatsuho's (Ms. Kazami's mother) advances. The third has to do mostly about Kei, Ms. Kazami and Ms. Kazami's mother and sister working everything out between each other. The series is funny but it does have quite a lot of serious moments. The one thing that impresses me most about this series is the way the students have problems just like teen, everyday problems such as love and friendship. Please Teacher is ranked up with Evangelion and .hack//SIGN

Product Description
The left-wing labor unions made this historically priceless film in 1946 that openly and earnestly criticizes big businesses and their growing power and influence over government immediately following World War Two. This film is amazing because the labor unions have actually weakened dramatically since this film was made! With an important theme, great filmmaking and wonderful metaphoric illustrations, this is a wonderful documentation of a changing mid-century America. You can't find this film on DVD anywhere else! Running time 37 minutes.

--Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
