Despite the success of My Best Friend's Wedding, Aussie director P.J. Hogan certainly hasn't gone Hollywood. Unconditional Love, co-written with his wife and fellow filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, is a deeply eccentric concoction that ranges from campy comedy to murder mystery. If the whole thing doesn't really come off, it does have much that is funny, giddy, or simply weirder than all-get-out. Kathy Bates enjoys herself as a discarded wife who impulsively flies to England to attend the funeral of her idol, a beloved singer--Jonathan Pryce, in glorious sequined form. Meeting his "valet" (read: secret gay lover), Rupert Everett, she determines to find the dead man's murderer. It's hard to get the tone right on this kind of movie, but it's also easy to like a film that finds time for tributes to Barry Manilow (hey, Hogan rehabilitated ABBA in Muriel's Wedding) and the reassuring spirit of Julie Andrews. --Robert Horton

"Unconditional Love"

A Comfort Film

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Unconditional Love" has everything--Barry Manilow, a dwarf, Kathy Bates as a romantic lead, a great script and it all works beautifully. Here is a delightful movie in which Kathy Bates plays Grace Beasley who leaves married life in Chicago to move to the English home of her newly murdered singing idol, Victor Fox. When she arrives in England, she discovers that Victor left behind a male lover, Dirk Simpson. As Grace and Dirk develop camaraderie and hilarious things happen. They eventually arrive back in Chicago and team up with Grace's midget daughter-in-law, Maudie and are off o their way to find out who murdered Victor.
Corny, touching, hilarious, sensitive, crazy--these are all words that could be used to describe the movie. And the cast is unbelievable--Aside from Kathy Bates we also have Jonathan Pryce, Lyn Redgrave, Rupert Everett, Julie Andrews and Dan Aykroyd. There is something for everyone-murder, singing, fabulous costumes, psychoses, etc, etc. And to put the icing on the cake there is Barry Manilow. The movie is totally absurd ad Bates s wonderful.
For some reason the movie never had widespread release and I suppose that is because it is so different. It starts with great promise and it never fails. Unconditionally entertaining, you do not want to miss "Unconditional Love".

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2007-04-06

Had never heard of this movie but it was the best one I've seen in ages. You laugh, you cry, it's just plain wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Whacky but Lovable.......2007-03-17

Yes, for the critics this is a whacky comedy, not likely but it is fun and Kathy Bates and Ruper Everett are both great in it. Of course, the dwarf makes her point and is a lot of fun, too. Rupert has said this was his favorite film, and I can see why--the message is clear, the music is romantic and the theme is also, but it's very good (except to those cynics who want everything as "realistic" as possible, but then they haven't lived). It's an excellent film, entertaining, and in places even has some inspiration--"Life lived in fear is not much fun." I think that applies on several levels. Have a fun trip with this one.

5 out of 5 stars There really is Unconditional Love out there!.......2007-03-10

I rented this movie a few times before I decided to buy it. It is a nice story about a misfit group of friends who stand up for justice and each other after being dumped by husbands and lovers. It is also a great movie for devoted fans of celebrities who wonder how far they would go to see their favorite celeb. Barry Manilow fans will love it because he does a great cameo at the end. Kathy Bates shines as the extraordingary house wife.
