Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Romance at its most anti-romantic--that is the Billy Wilder stamp of genius, and this Best Picture Academy Award winner from 1960 is no exception. Set in a decidedly unsavory world of corporate climbing and philandering, the great filmmaker's trenchant, witty satire-melodrama takes the office politics of a corporation and plays them out in the apartment of lonely clerk C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon). By lending out his digs to the higher-ups for nightly extramarital flings with their secretaries, Baxter has managed to ascend the business ladder faster than even he imagined. The story turns even uglier, though, when Baxter's crush on the building's melancholy elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) runs up against her long-standing affair with the big boss (a superbly smarmy Fred MacMurray). The situation comes to a head when she tries to commit suicide in Baxter's apartment. Not the happiest or cleanest of scenarios, and one that earned the famously caustic and cynically humored Wilder his share of outraged responses, but looking at it now, it is a funny, startlingly clear-eyed vision of urban emptiness and is unfailingly understanding of the crazy decisions our hearts sometimes make. Lemmon and MacLaine are ideally matched, and while everyone cites Wilder's Some Like It Hot closing line "Nobody's perfect" as his best, MacLaine's no-nonsense final words--"Shut up and deal"--are every bit as memorable. Wilder won three Oscars for The Apartment, for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (cowritten with longtime collaborator I.A.L. Diamond). --Robert Abele

5 out of 5 stars Compulsory For Anbody Thinking of Using.......2007-06-27

I was a little taken aback by the film's "PG" rating. Drug use is treated frankly, there's some strong language and fleeting nudity. But then I thought why shouldn't young people of a certain age see this film. They are the most vulnerable in being ensnared into the drug culture and maybe they should heed the film's cautionary message. I also found the timing of this film's release, 1971, interesting because it comes at a time when the drug culture was in full bloom and we were only a few years removed from "Easy Rider". The selling point is, of course, Al Pacino who is nothing short of amazing as the small-time thief who goes from pecking to full-blown addiction. I thought this was more Kitty Winn's picture, though. Her character could be anybody's daughter who for reason's unknown takes up a serious drug habit. The film is essentially a love story between Pacino and Winn's characters. I couldn't decide whether the love between the two brought a little light to their dismal straits or that they were enabling each other into a worse addiction. For obvious reasons the film's message is timeless because, unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. Pacino and director Jerry Schatzberg would later collaborate on another seventies gem, "Scarecrow", that is well worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Pacino Can't Save a Tired Script.......2007-06-26

I can't help but compare this film to Drugstore Cowboy, another drama detailing the life of heroin users. The comparison does not favor Panic. While Drugstore Cowboy feels like a story written by someone who really knows what it's like to be a junkie (it was), this tale feels like it was written by an intellectual who had never touched smack but thought it would be cool to write a story about strung-out people. The whole thing feels affected, stale, acted out. You can't help but love Al Pacino, overacting in an endearing way in the earliest days of his career. And Kitty Winn, the actress who plays Pacino's partner in crime here, is cute and charming in a Margot Kidder/Karen Allen kind of way. But actors' charms aside, the film is bland and sterile. Skip this and go watch Drugstore Cowboy, which will make you feel like you are really inside the world of a group of heroin users.

5 out of 5 stars Al Pacino's first starring role, a stunning debut........2007-04-08

Thirty-six years (1971) after it came out it is finally being released on DVD. This stark and grim film was heavily criticized by critics mostly because of its brutal and honest drug content. Filmed on location in New York City, THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, marked the real beginning of what was to become the amazing career of one of the greatest actors to ever grace the screen the legendary Al Pacino. Great movie that I am happy is finally making its way to video. The movie had been released in Europe for some time but never in the United States that is until now. I will definitely be purchasing this underrated movie classic that for years has become among die-hard Pacino fans one of his most sought after movies ever. To the studio that finally thought about releasing this movie after so many years of waiting I thank you kindly.

2 out of 5 stars The Boredom in Needle Park.......2007-02-12

This film drags along at snails pace, without any discernible plot. Although occasionally one is hinted at, it never seems to unfold. The "highlights" are a couple of extended, graphic heroin injection scenes, and otherwise two hours of muddy, low register mumbling of street jive and drug talk. After an hour it became a struggle just to sit through, but I forced myself to keep watching, convinced it was all leading to 'something'. Unfortunately it wasn't, and nothing happens.

Pacino himself is not remotely convincing as a down and out addict, and he doesn't fit in at all with the junkie crew. The lone saving grace is Pacino's creepy brother Hank (played by Richard Bright), who convincingly portrays a career burgular. His scenes and character draw you in, but unfortunately he vanishes midway, and we're back to dragged out scenes of Pacino and his girl slumped in bedrooms, high and staring vacantly into space.

Maybe this film will be of some interest to the Pacino-completist, but my personal advice would be to steer clear. And this is coming from both a Pacino fan, and a fan of 70s American cinema. Otherwise if you still want to proceed, a shot of heroin may be necessary before viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Pacino and Wynn.......2007-02-05

A true (*****) star movie is one that: 1.) Makes you think 2.) Makes you cry 3.) Makes you shudder 4.) then think again.
Ordinary People, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, and "I Want To Live", are five star movies.
This IS a five star movie.
The writing is rough, the characters are flawed, camera angles are off, yet this film is gripping to the core. I first saw this film on AMC when AMC was a pay channel. My first impression was,... how can a film end this way?
On second viewing,... what a masterpiece.
Pacino is at his (RAW) best. Wynn,... how can anyone act in this manner if they truly aren't like this in true life?
Moving and thought provoking.

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Directorial Failure.......2007-07-01

Steve Carell can be a good actor, witness his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and he receives some great support here from Catherine Keener and Romany Malco, but somehow it just doesn't work. The idea behind the film is tenuous, and is made even more so by modeling the hero on Pee Wee Herman (grown man rides bicycle, collects action figures). Carell simply comes across as being silly.

There are some uproariously funny scenes, which justify the time worth watching the film, but like a Chinese dinner, you'll feel empty an hour later.

5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-06-27

This is a good laugh of a movie. You have to see it. I've watched it like a lot. You have to have a gr8 sense of humor and sillyness. Don't take it personally if you relate to the main guy. He is hilarious....

1 out of 5 stars Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17

Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.

5 out of 5 stars R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format! (The original unrated DVD and R-rated full screen versions were released in December 2005, while the new R-rated widescreen wasn't available until January 2006.)

For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites!!!.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best comedies of all time!! I've watched it 25-30 times! The unrated DVD has some really great deleted scenes that are must-sees!!

5 out of 5 stars Great "Who done it..??".......2007-04-29

Stars Edward G. Robinson as a college professor who meets regularly with colleagues at a mens club. Next door to the club is a portrait of a beautiful woman in the window of a studio. The men come look at the portrait and admire her beauty. One evening Robinson meets the woman and goes to her apartment for a drink. Her boyfriend bursts in and in the ensuing scuffle is killed. But things are not really as they seem and Robinson eventually learns the truth behind his chance meeting with the "woman in the window". A Very good mystery with good performances.

4 out of 5 stars One Misstep Leads to Murder.......2007-03-01

The film shows "Gotham College" in New York, founded in 1812. Professor Richard Wanley lectures his class on the psychological aspects of homicide. His wife and children leave for vacation, leaving him a summer bachelor. His friend the DA tells about the troubles for middle-aged men who try to act like a young colt. Professor Wanley stares at a portrait of a woman in a shop window, then at the model herself. Alice Reed talks to him, then invites him over. One thing leads to another. Alice's boyfriend returns to her apartment; there is a fight and the Professor stabs the man. At first the Professor picks up a telephone to call the police, then pauses to review the events. He decides to cover up this crime, and makes a deal with the woman. There is suspense when the Professor removes the body for disposal. Things don't go as planned, but the body is dumped beside a highway. The next day the newspapers report that financier Claude Masard was murdered. The police have the footprints and the tire tread, a blood sample form the man who dropped off the body, and some wool thread from the man's coat.

There is another complication. Masard had a bodyguard who followed him, but he has also disappeared. This bodyguard showed up at Alice Reed's apartment. He knows much, but will take a payoff to keep the secret. The Professor explains there are three ways to deal with a blackmailer. Will one death lead to another? The bodyguard is worldly-wise, and not easily fooled. He wants his payoff, and he gets it in an unexpected way. Alice Reed calls the Professor but does not get an answer. Will this nightmare ever end?

This film serves as a checkpoint to criminology, the art of detection from the clues left behind. Edmond Locard says a criminal always leaves something at the crime scene, and takes away something. The Professor received a cut from barbed wire, and touched poison ivy to get an infection.

5 out of 5 stars Dvd...? Hello...?.......2007-01-18

I first saw this picture when I was 17, perhaps 18 - a long time ago, anyway. I remember my boyfriend at the time called me on the phone during the commercial break and I also remember what I told him: "I'm going to bed NOW. I can't stand this!" I remember having a similar reaction to a totally different movie - "Whatever Happened to Babby Jane?", by Aldrich, a few years later. Which speaks volumes. This is an absolute classic. We need the dvd!

5 out of 5 stars DVD?.......2006-10-30

Why isn't this classic on DVD? Joan Bennett has never been lovelier. Great film - DVD whomever?

4 out of 5 stars Fritz Lang intrigue with a twist - rightly 4 1/2 stars.......2005-07-20

The affable Edward G. Robinson plays criminal psychology professor Richard Wanley in "The Woman in the Window". After spiriting his wife and children away on vacation he goes to his club to spend time with his friends, one of whom being D.A. Lalor played by the angular Raymond Massey.

After they depart, Robinson becomes enraptured with a portrait of a beautiful young woman displayed in the window of an art gallery next to the club. Robinson is startled when he sees a face reflected in the window of the woman in the portrait. After his initial shock, Robinson engages the gal Alice Reed played by Joan Bennett in converstaion. They eventually wind up in her apartment for an innocent nightcap. Quite suddenly and unexpectedly an agitated unknown man bursts into Bennett's apartment and in a jealous rage starts to choke the life out of Robinson. Protecting himself, Robinson grabs a pair of scissors and stabs the man in the back killing him.

Bennett and Robinson are conflicted as to what to do and ultimately decide to cover up the crime and move the body to a distant location. Since they are both amateurs, very soon evidence starts to mount as the body is quickly found. It turns out that the gentleman was a millionaire who had been missing since arriving in New York's Penn Station. Massey, not suspecting Robinson involves him in the investigation. Robinson starts getting panicky when the noose starts tightening around his neck. Things really start going awry when Dan Duryea, a bodyguard of the millionaire arrives at Bennett's pad threatening extortion.

Lang creates an intense sense of fear, dread and intrigue as his plot evolves greatly aided by nice acting performances by a solid ensemble. Lang's finale is a bit of a cop out but didn't spoil the overall fine quality of the flick.

An absolute delight, L'Auberge Espagnole captures a moment in a life, seemingly about nothing and everything all at once. Xavier (Romain Duris), a young Parisian not sure what his life is about, decides to spend a year in Barcelona studying economics--leaving behind his unhappy girlfriend (Audrey Tautou, Amélie) but joining an international mix of students in a hectic, crowded apartment. Arguing and partying with his British, German, Danish, and Italian roommates--not to mention getting lessons in love from a Belgian lesbian (Cecile De France) so that he can seduce a friend's wife (Judith Godreche, Ridicule)--Xavier learns more about life than economics. The movie, beautifully shot on digital video, has a freshness and spontaneity that make its simple events--a series of arguments and flirtations--feel like a miniature portrait of the European Union as it comes into focus (the title can be translated as "Euro pudding"). Vibrant, charming, and all-around entertaining. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-06-17

"The Spanish Apartment" follows Xavier, a French student who decides to improve his chance of getting a job in finance by studying a year in Spain. He leaves behind his girlfriend, but soon finds consolation in his fun roommates and somewhere else (I don't want to give too much away). The characters feel real, and that is one of the merits of the movie. The actors are also quite good. But the screenplay is never engaging enough to make us care much about Xavier.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie........2007-06-08

What to know why Europeans are, by and large, a happy and contented people?

Watch this and find out.

Funny, poignant, sensitive, and interesting. You want to be one of these people before the film is half-way through. Each character is very different and they all (eight of them) are jammed together into one apartment in Barcelona. Yet, somehow, they collectively play to each other's strengths and become life-long friends in the process.

4 out of 5 stars The Spanish Apartment.......2007-06-06

I loved this film! Entertaining, colorful, lighthearted, and adventurous. This was a pleasant film to watch and while no deeper meanings of life were revealed it was a fun way to spend an evening.

Bad romantic comedies make you scoff at their absurdity; good ones make you wish your life was that absurd. Just Like Heaven is just smart and likable enough to trigger that wishing. David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco--only to discover it's haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election). There's something not quite right about Elizabeth's afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life...but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn't rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey. --Bret Fetzer

We really like this movie - its a funny comedy and touching in parts. I think Mark Ruffalo is a great actor, as is Reese Witherspoon. It's not the deepest or most moving movie, but it is a good movie to see.

5 out of 5 stars lovely romantic beautiful comedy..........2007-05-01

what a lovely movie, a simple funny romantic movie. if you are in the need to laugh a little, you will enjoy this movie. great shots from san francisco, reese and mark, great funny combo-for me, this was a must have in my collection of romantic comedy movies.

The title credit for Delicatessen reads "Presented by Terry Gilliam," and it's easy to understand why the director of Brazil was so supportive of this outrageously black French comedy from 1991. Like Gilliam, French codirectors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro have wildly inventive imaginations that gravitate to the darker absurdities of human behavior, and their visual extravagance is matched by impressive technical skill. Here, making their feature debut, Jeunet and Caro present a postapocalyptic scenario set entirely in a dank and gloomy building where the landlord operates a delicatessen on the ground floor. But this is an altogether meatless world, so the butcher-landlord keeps his customers happy by chopping unsuspecting victims into cutlets, and he's sharpening his knife for a new tenant (French comic actor Dominque Pinon) who's got the hots for the butcher's nearsighted daughter! Delicatessen is a feast (if you will) of hilarious vignettes, slapstick gags, and sweetly eccentric characters, including a man in a swampy room full of frogs, a woman doggedly determined to commit suicide (she never gets its right), and a pair of brothers who make toy sound boxes that "moo" like cows. It doesn't amount to much as a story, but that hardly matters; this is the kind of comedy that springs from a unique wellspring of imagination and inspiration, and it's handled with such visual virtuosity that you can't help but be mesmerized. There's some priceless comedy happening here, some of which is so inventive that you may feel the urge to stand up and cheer. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Fantastical........2007-06-19

I was first introduced to this film several years ago in a dark, art museum theatre. I didn't know what to expect, but was quite frankly blown away.

Delicatessen is a masterpiece. The cinematography surpasses no other with it's mystical angles, and bright coloring. There is definitely a fantastical quality to this film. Just close your eyes and listen to the strange, musical sequences that the characters pull off. Then open them again and realize that all of the objects captured are moving to the music's rhythm. It's wonderful.

This movie has a terrific, magical feel to it. It's almost like a dark, fantasy land. Only towards the end, the darkness begins to lift to reveal clear skies and red umbrellas.

5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2007-05-31

This movie is awesome if you like amelie then youll love this movie..even if you dont like amelie this movie still rocks! the filming is done very well and the story is very creative. If youre looking for a new type of film genre this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Delicatessen is...people?.......2007-04-10

This is the first movie by the group who brought us "City of Lost Children" and Philipe Jeunot, the director of "Amalie", "Aliens 4" and many others. Set in a WWII-type setting, "Deliatessen" is the story of the eccentric inhabitants of a French apartment building. Led by an ex-circus clown (the same actor who plays the clones in "City" and is part of the rebel team of "Aliens"), this odd band of misfits lives, loves and eats - eat being the operative word as the apartments are above a meat-sellers shop -the deli of the title - and the butcher himself doles out food in exchange for this that an the other while watching over his suicidal wife and beautiful daughter. OH, and did I mention the SCUBA ninjas? The editing and timing are wonderful, it's truely a hoot to watch - but pay attention or you could get lost in the multiple plotlines.....

5 out of 5 stars A delirious baroque comedy about the future to come!.......2007-04-04

Among the most surrealistic films ever made, this movie is glorious homage to the invectiveness and imaginary universe of Luis Bunuel, plenty of black humor, powerful doses of cynicism that really captures the physique essence in terms of Jean Epstein. Jeunet and Caro offers us one of the most solid, baroque and formidable black comedies of the Nineties, when one the most sacred icons of the France - the gastronomy - is employed as a device to carve in relief an febrile battle between cannibals, vegetarian militants and a group of innocents who live or survive in a crumbling building ruled by a monster-butcher whose exquisite dishes are product of his perverted mind with a spice of madness.

The film is a true prodigy of kinetic cinematography. The impressive shootings, traveling and camera displacements are simply outstanding. Filmed under sepia tunes the oppressive atmosphere is accurately depicted.

Not for squeamish or delicate stomachs. Consider this one as one of my favorite cult movie of the nineties.

4 out of 5 stars Madness is served.......2007-03-23

This is an odd tale, to say the least. The use of exquisite imagery and vibrant sounds really boost this unique story to a higher level. It's a dark comedy, intertwined with a light-hearted romance. Oh yeah, it involves cannibalism.
Cicumstances drive good people to do bad things. Like eat each other. You know you're hungry when you chow down on your neighbor. That might be the fate of the new resident, an ex-clown targeted by the butcher.
His best chance for survival is with the butcher's daughter, who falls in love with this fresh piece of meat. Can she convince daddy to carve up someone else?
Delicatessen is a scrumptious offering for people with different tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Do the Hustle........2007-06-06

Inventive. Action-packed. Absurd. Hilarious. Touching. Violent. Lively. Smart. And above all else- Superb.

You don't need all of those adjectives to describe a great movie, but you do when describing Stephen Chow's masterpiece Kung Fu Hustle. Taking place in 1940s China, our story involves the hundreds-strong Axe Gang, their efforts to take over the impoverished and dilapidated Pig Sty Alley, and the effects on Pig Sty's tenants. The gang believes taking or Pig Sty will be a cakewalk, but a few of the residents aren't about to let that happen.

Perhaps the most unique thing about the film is how our attention is shifted from one protagonist to another. The first part focuses on three Kung Fu experts (a baker who carries a wooden staff that can shatter metal guns, a hardworking laborer, and a sensitive homosexual tailor). The second part is about Pig Sty's tyrannical chain-smoking landlady and her philandering landlord husband. And the third part concerns a loser (played by Chow) who tries to take up life of crime because of a traumatic childhood incident when he tried to do good deed. I've read critics pan KFH because it lacks one true central character, but I just call it doing something different. Oh well, whatever gets those critics through those long and lonely nights.

Unconventional narrative style aside, there are plenty of other reasons to watch such as the eye popping effects and the humor. Ordinarily, I can't stand CGI, but I really love the way it was used here. Chow succeeds in using it in ways that most American filmmakers can't even dream about. A gut-busting Looney Toons inspred foot chase and a fight with two evil street musicians both have to be seen to be believed. Who needs people like Michael Bay who timidly believes he is pushing the envelope, while Chow demolishes the whole stationery store?

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu Hustle Review.......2007-06-02

This was a great movie, containing a segment from almost every genre known to man. I loved it. The best parts for me were the fighting scenes, where the action is choreographed to be almost a dance. Most prominent in theis movie is the comedy...after the first 5 or ten minutes...that had me laughing all the way through. Though there was a lot of fighting, it was light on violence. I would recommend this movie to viewers at least ten and up. Totally.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-18

As a high level martial artist I have to say this is the greatest martial arts movie since the Seven Samurai.

4 out of 5 stars This is hilarious!.......2007-03-24

I rented this movie from Blockbuster, and after I watched it, I had to have it! This is a well written (of you like spoofs) hilarious movie! I'm also a huge fan of "Shaun of the Dead"! So if you like that type of "off beat" humor, you'll love this movie!

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT!!.......2007-02-17

A friend provided a care package of movies before a rather lengthy business trip. He included this movie knowing that I love the genre and told me that this would most likely be a new favorite. The movie they showed on the plane was [..], so I popped the disc into my laptop and lo and behold!! I watched it 2 more times while I was on my business trip and thought it was more brilliant each and everytime. It's funny and heartbreaking and heartwarming and funny and thrilling and funny. But the best part is..It's FUNNY!! I mean hilariously so. The action scenes are well choreographed, but don't look choreographed. The acting is superb. I love this movie! My husband and I never get tired of watching, now the kids watch and love it too.

Devotees of Neil Simon's repartee, such as in his Goodbye Girl and Brighton Beach Memoirs, will enjoy this earlier tale of domestic dispute between newlyweds. Corie (Jane Fonda) is the young housewife trying to keep life exciting while making a home for her and her husband, Paul (Robert Redford), on the fifth floor of a Greenwich Village walkup apartment. He's working hard at starting his career as lawyer; she's eager to be romantic and spontaneous; and the two have plenty to squabble about. The film suffers a bit from Corie's excessive perkiness and the odd lack of chemistry between the two actors. But those who find the dramatic conventions a bit stiff (some of the dialogue and action seems more suited for stage than screen) may still smile at the dated look (circa 1967) at home life. Mildred Natwick is superb as Corie's mother, and Charles Boyer milks his role as the elderly bohemian neighbor upstairs. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-16

I never saw the play on which this movie is based, but I do have to say that I think this movie is hilarious and really light-hearted. The first time I saw it was on TCM (Turner Classic Movies), and I could already tell it was a classic. It was such a simple movie, yet so memorable. There are many catchy lines and quirky situations that make this movie a "must-have". I recommend it for anyone young or old who has the urge to laugh and smile through the day. Thanks for reading!=)

4 out of 5 stars Funny, Silly, Enetertaining (almost required viewing for newlyweds).......2007-05-27

Based on Neil Simon's paly (he is also the author of the screenplay), this is a lighthearted, comic and silly yarn about two newlyweds (Redford and Fonda), who, after spending a brief honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel, move into a rented a walk-up apartment in New York. The challenges of the couple - lack of heating, adjusting to living with each other, dealing with in-laws and neighbors are well narrated and acted. Highly recommended for newlyweds, particularly those who are professionals and live in an urban environment!

For a more serious movie love story set in New York with Redford (and Streisand), see the 1973 Best Picture Oscar nominee "The Way We Were".

Neil Simon's terribly funny play about roommates Oscar the slob and Felix the neurotic was first committed to film in this 1968 production, directed by Gene Saks (Barefoot in the Park). Perfectly timed, ingeniously rendered, not a hair out of place in the history-making performances of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon (or the great support cast), The Odd Couple is a movie that one just has to see every two or three years to stay happy. The poker-game sequence in which Oscar's cronies seem to be falling under the sway of fussy Felix's talent for making sandwiches is priceless. --Tom Keogh

Description

Neil Simon's beloved story about two divorced men who decide to share a New York apartment. Felix is fussy and fastidious to a fault. He proves that cleanliness is next to insanity. Oscar wreaks havoc on a tidy room with the speed and thoroughness of a tornado. An enduring and endearing picture with the intelligence one usually misses in comedies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Humor is Dated, But the Movie is Great.......2007-05-31

The late, great Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were one of the greatest comedy duos in the history of movies. This was (as far as I know) their first pairing, but they would reunite all through their careers and even died within months of each other. "The Odd Couple" introduces that same humor that we'd see in the "Grumpy Old Men" films and their other collaborations; The humor here is kind of dated, but it has its moments of fun and is, of course, incredibly charming. Jack Lemmon plays Felix Unger, a man whose wife has just filed for divorce. When we meet Felix, he's on the verge of committing suicide. Walter Matthau plays Oscar Madison, a divorced bachelor who spends his days gambling and getting calls from his ex-wife about how his alimony payments are late. With Felix's troubles, Oscar decides to let Felix stay with him.
The problem is, Oscar is a laid-back slob while Felix is a neurotic, neat freak...It doesn't take long before the two start to get on each other's nerves. The turning point comes when Oscar sets up a date for the two of them with two English sisters Cicily and Gwendolyn Pigeon and Felix breaks down, destroying the rest of the night. The film is written by Neil Simon, based on his play and this is a film that can truly be called perfect. As I said, the humor is dated and it's not as hilarious as it probably once was but there's not a single scene in the film that doesn't need to be in the film and there are no jokes that fall flat. They either work or they don't. Lemmon and Matthau are at the top of their game here and this is the best collaboration I've seen of theirs (although, the only other ones I have seen are the two "Grumpy Old Men" films). "The Odd Couple" is a human comedy that's realistic and funny with some great moments and a terrific, paradoxical ending. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest couple.......2007-03-04

This comedy is a classic. It is not only the plot which is based on a play by Neil Simon but the cast makes this film a comedy that you will have a hard time to stop laughing.
The plot is well known- a divorced man moves in with his bachelor friend and they became roomates from hell.
As I said you will laugh and laugh a lot. Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau make a perfect duet and complement each other. Buy it.
