Todd Solondz, director of the acclaimed Welcome to the Dollhouse and the controversial Happiness, continues pushing the envelope of social decorum with the merciless and casually cruel Storytelling, his most ruthless satire of suburban complacency. Broken into two unrelated chapters, "Fiction" follows college girl Selma Blair through a degrading encounter with her resentful writing teacher (Robert Wisdom), while the more sprawling and scattershot "Non-Fiction" circles around the mutual exploitation of a fumbling documentary filmmaker (Paul Giamatti doing a near-parody of director Solondz) and his clueless subject, a suburban high school slacker named Scooby (Mark Webber). The squirmy laughs are laced with humiliation and the satire is acidic and cynical; in the world of Solondz, victims and victimizers alike are petty, selfish, vindictive, and thoughtless, and empathy is strictly rationed. Though sharply written and well directed, this misanthropic vision is strictly for daring filmgoers and Solondz fans. --Sean Axmaker

Based on Katherine Paterson's young-adult novel and filmed in picturesque New Zealand, Bridge to Terabithia has lessons to impart about empathy and self-expression, but the tone is never heavy-handed. Jesse (sleepy-eyed Josh Hutcherson, Zathura), a fifth-grade loner, lives in the country with his parents and four sisters, including pesky May Belle (Bailee Madison), who adores him. His strict father (Robert Patrick, The Terminator 2) works in a hardware store. Money is tight and classmates make fun of his hand-me-downs, so Jesse finds refuge in running and drawing. Everything changes when two writers and their daughter Leslie (wide-eyed AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) move in next door. Leslie is faster than all the boys, which initially puts Jesse off, but the two soon bond over their love of make-believe. In the forest, they find a creek that can only be crossed by rope. Leslie names the land on the other side Terabithia, where they imagine themselves rulers of the kingdom. Jesse and Leslie also connect with their unconventional music teacher, Ms. Edmonds (Zooey Deschanel, Elf), who encourages their creativity. Despite the tension at home, Jesse's personal life is finally coming together when the unthinkable happens. Will he revert to his anti-social ways or will he grow from the experience? Though aimed at all ages, pre-school students may find Terebithia's creatures frightening. For grade-school kids and up, however, there's much to savor in this smartly written, sensitively acted film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Very Emotional. Surprising. Not About Fantasy, But About Loss and Relationships.......2007-07-04
This movie can be very surprising and possibly an emotional tearjerker if you are not familiar with the story or book it was based on. If you don't mind your young children learning about "loss" and the sadness surrounding it, this will also be an uplifting movie that shows the positive nature of fostering good relationships. I thought I was getting a "fantasy" movie to watch with my son -- it was short on fantasy, and was heavy on the theme of "loss" but was still a good movie overall as it really brought out the emotions it intended to bring out. Many parents may argue whether the movie should be watched by their children (depending on what you are willing to teach your children about early.) As an adult, I found the movie of value and entertaining and also feel it is necessary to be present if you allow younger children watch it.
Terrible and Completely Pointless .......2007-07-04
Boy am I sorry I just wasted an hour and a half watching this movie, and I'm even sorrier that I let my kids see it.
This is not a movie for children, it is far too slow, boring, and sad. Its not a movie for adults, it is far too juvenile and, well, dumb.
I kept waiting for the movie to get to a point - and it never does. It meanders around in the very sad lives of two different adolescents - both terribly neglected by their parents in very different ways, both bullied, both living pretty sad lives. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, or for the film to reach some pinnacle where it all came together, and it never did. Totally pointless.
The "fantasy" bits of the film [and they are *tiny* bits - not really worth even mentioning] are poorly done and just awful.
There is really nothing redeeming about this film, other than the fact that the two young actors who play the main characters do a good job acting - they just have pretty lame characters. ALL the characters in the movie are really just characateurs - with no depth or meaning. And most of them are "bad" in some way or other, from the insanely neglectful mother to the nasty abusive father to the mean bullies who beat up the other kids.
Anyway, its just a terrible movie and not worth anyone's time or money. And please, parents, if you think you *might* want to show this movie to your children, preview it first. I sure wish I had done that.
Great Fun! Good Story.......2007-07-04
It seems a lot of people were expecting a lot more "fantasy" world in this film and have judged it accordingly. Personally, I love the "simplicity" of the fantasy as it really gives adults a reminder as to what children see when they play make believe.
The fantasy is supposed to be secondary to the plot and it's very well done. I was very pleased when I watched it and had a good cry at the end, not once but twice.
Warning - sad movie, too sad for kids.......2007-07-03
I wish someone had warned us! My daughter and I balled our eyes out. Other than that really sad part, the movie was great, but just to forewarn you...bring your tissues!
Kooky and mildly pointless...........2007-07-03
Yes, I get it. Kids are supposed to be imaginative. Okay so why wasn't the story? You have AnnaSophia Robb staring (brilliantly I might add) in a flick about an adolescent with an overactive imagination... yet her imagination is depicted for all of 20 minutes in a 90 minute flick. The creatures are mindless cardboard cutouts, meant to represent real-life characters in their everyday world, but they wind up being boring parodies of themself.
The movie had great potential. Lots of area for conflict, what with a controlling "down on his luck" deadbeat dad and all. But in the end, the film would have been better if it had gone unmade. Or perhaps benefitted from about another half hour actually IN Terabithia.

When Sultan Said discovers his wife locked in a passionate embrace with his only brother, he flings his sword at the prince and accidentally murders his adulterous queen. Tortured by his wife's ghost, the maniacal and cowardly sultan must marry another to save his kingdom, but to avoid future matrimonial disgrace he plans to have her executed the morning after the wedding. Fortunately for him, Scheherezade, the grand vicar's daughter played by the lovely Mili Avital, jumps at the challenge and the chance to marry her childhood love. A master storyteller, the newly crowned sultana escapes death night after night with her mesmerizing tales of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin and his Magic Lamp, countless warriors, supernatural duels, and ferocious genies.
Although the main story line falls short of Scheherezade's seductive tales, audiences will be enchanted with fantastic special effects, elaborate costumes, and the magic of Persia. Wonderfully directed and edited by Steve Barron, Hallmark's Arabian Nights will particularly appeal to fans of magical computer-effects laden television miniseries. --Melissa Asher

botched culture nights.......2007-04-19
Did anyone else find the glaring cultural mixups distracting? Interesting how they mixed Indian dance, Indian clothing, inauthentic clothing, English accents into this movie.
Arabian Nights .......2007-04-07
I'm 63 years old and never get tired of this movie. A pleasure to watch with a bowl of pop corn and my family. Mili Avital is enchanting and uses hers brain to keep the story going. Finally a movie where filthy language and sex aren't used to entertain the viewer. This movie has its silly moments and fantasy abounds. The special effects are really very good making this move a classic for the ages. There is some old slapstick comedy which keeps you laughing. without telling secrets out of school this movie is worth the almost 3 hours a viewing. I would consider this a top 10 for family viewing.
The movie bored me.......2007-03-20
It had great special effects and tons and tons of great reviews, but I honestly could not get into the story. It bored me from the very beginning. I thought the acting was very flat--almost like reading lines. Very monitone. It just didn't have any flair, I thought. I know everybody will disagree with me, but I checked it out and I was disappointed. Yawn!!
Arabian Nights.......2007-03-16
I really enjoyed this movie the first time I watched it. So much so that I went ahead and bought it. If you enjoy the Disney stories but think their a little to childish these are the same stories before Disney took out all the violence. Its not gory or anything just a lot more grown up. It may be an older movie but I don't think the graphics are lacking at all.
Captivating.......2007-03-08
As the storyteller says, you must leave your audience wanting more....well, they sure did accomplish that task. My husband and I could not turn off the tv, we had to stay up and finish until 1:00 AM. And with 3 kids that's not something we do often anymore. Wonderful story and extremely well done!

A Masterpiece. A Really Terrific Movie........2007-02-18
Todd Solondz is a talented filmmaker and I can say that after seeing only one of his films. I saw "Happiness" a few months ago and appreciated it for how smart it was. It was disturbing, disgusting, but smartly written despite all the vulgarity (something I normally never have a problem with). When discussing "This Film is Not Yet Rated" he mentioned a scene from that film was from "Storytelling" a movie I had never heard of. I rented it that day and saw that it was written and directed by Todd Solondz, so I expected the same kind of thing. When the film ended I just thought...Wow. This is a great film. Unique, provocative, funny, and very intelligently written. I loved it. It's separated into two parts, two mini-movies if you will. The first is "Fiction" and the second is "Non-Fiction." At least, those are those titles, which are ironic in the same way the title of "Happiness" is. The movie runs 82 minutes. I expected them to be 40 minutes apiece. Oddly enough, "Fiction" is 27 and "Non-Fiction" is 55. A lot of writers would fear doing something like this, but Solondz doesn't want to fill something in just because it's expected. Both films end exactly when they should and not a single scene seems unnecessary. Here's a synopsis of both:
FICTION:
A college student named Vi (Selma Blair, looking beautiful) has been "dating" Marcus (Leo Fitzpatrick, "Kids"), a man with cerebral palsy. After he writes a short story based on their relationship and is told by the professor, Mr. Scott (Robert Wisdom) that his story sucks. Since Vi told him it was good, he's disappointed and breaks up with her. Vi goes to a bar to "get drunk and get laid" and finds Mr. Scott there. This leads to two things...A terrific ending and a (dare I say it) great "erotic" scene.
NON-FICTION:
In this story, a loser documentary filmmaker named Toby (Paul Giamatti) sets out to make a documentary about teenagers. He finds the perfect specimen (at least, the only one who will participate in it) in Scooby (Mark Webber), a gay Conan O'Brien wannabe. Scooby lives with an overbearing father (John Goodman, in top form), a strange and possibly mentally challenged mother (Julie Haggerty), a popular brother Brady, and a little demon-child intelligent younger brother named Mikey. Several sub-plots abound in this story, including Brady having a football accident and Mikey's attempts to get their nanny Consuelo (Lupe Ontiveros) fired. The ending is one of the best endings I've seen in a long time.
Out of both stories, I like "Non-Fiction" the best. Both are terrific, containing great acting and well-written story lines that never faulter. But "Non-Fiction" is just a masterpiece all its own.
Giamatti, Goodman, Webber, and Ontiveros are superb. The dialogue is so funny and so meaningful. I can't rave enough about this movie. Both endings make so much sense; they're almost poetic. This film is a masterpiece, a movie that truly deserves to be seen by a larger audience. Even if you didn't like "Happiness" or any of Solondz's other work (I now want to see more of it) I urge you to see this film. This is an American comedy that ranks right up there with
Sideways, Election, and About Schmidt.
GRADE: A
Diving deep into the shallow end.......2006-12-06
This is really 2 movies, neither very long. Both give brief but intimate looks at different aspects of human emotion. It has very interesting character development in this concentrated span of time.
1st part-Fiction
This was my favorite of the two.
I really loved Leo Fitzpatrick's acting performance as the insecure student struggling with cerebral palsy. If I'd never seen him before, I'd think he really was handicapped.
Robert Wisdom does great here too as the college professor. He's a big man, and his deliberate mannerisms and cold stares are quite intimidating to his students. His body generates anger before he even speaks.
Selma Blair nails her role as the nice but weak-willed, needy chick.
2nd part-Nonfiction
Giamatti & Goodman are both great, but I really liked Mark Webber as Scooby. He plays the confused, distant, high school senior who is sick of parental/societal influence and advice.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. It only seems to skim the surface of the pool of emotion it dives into, due to it's short length. It's the 2nd Todd Solondz movie Ive seen. It's not as flamboyant or disturbing as Happiness, but still better than most typical Hollywood movies, in my opinion.
Apathy For The Sake Of Apathy.......2006-10-25
***CONTAINS SPOILERS***
It's probably fun to make a movie about yourself -- or one that focuses closely on you -- and that is what director Solondz has done with STORYTELLING. Not only is the film divided into two nearly unintelligible segments, it is further broken down during the final section by portraying a down-on-his luck director (Paul Giamatti, THE ILLUSIONIST) who is obviously a doppelganger of Solondz himself.
Overflowing with apathy, Storytelling has two distinct parts: "fiction" and "nonfiction." In fiction, which launches the film, we're introduced to Vi (Selma Blair, HELLBOY), a young New Jersey college student involved in a writing/literature class that concentrates on critique. Her boyfriend Marcus (Leo Fitzpatrick, THE WIRE TV series) has cerebral palsy and it appears the only reason she's with him is because of her apathy toward college life and those that haunt its halls. The teacher of the class is a forbidding black man named Mr. Scott (Robert Wisdom, also from THE WIRE), a Pulitzer Prize winner who's flat affect and bored demeanor heaves a heavy shadow over the class. But apathy attracts apathy in Solondz story, so Vi and Mr. Scott have a sexual encounter, if for no other reason than to slip out of their routines and into one another. There's actually some interesting dark sexual comedy here, but it quickly dissolves.
Perhaps "fiction" was part nonfiction, too, as one could easily see Solondz sitting in a class, reading stories that get sledgehammer critiques.
The second and final portion of Storytelling is "nonfiction." Here we find Toby Oxman (Giamatti), a man who can't seem to finish anything. But when he discovers a young kid named Scooby (Mark Webber, THE MEMORY THIEF) who mirrors Toby's own apathy toward life, the wannabe film maker believes he's found a new calling: to make a documentary about society. John Goodman (O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?) stars as Scooby's father, a big man that pushes his kids and family too hard to become his ideal nuclear family. His wife Fern (July Hagerty, AIRPLANE) is just as disinterested in life as the rest of the cast, but hides it behind a facade of smiles. The only empathetic character in the Webber household is the maid Consuelo (Lupe Ontiveros, TORTILLA HEAVEN) who gets fired because she shows some interest in life. Toby Oxman films all of the Webber household people but keeps his focus on Scooby, whom he sees strictly as a character subject.
That the film ends abruptly with the death of Scooby's family, and we still see no emotional response from him, only adds to the viewer's anger that there's no one in the film to care about. No protagonist that we can get behind. No angst from any of the characters. They are blobs of human flesh pooling around each other in uninteresting ways.
Directing a movie about apathy has been done before; AMERICAN BEAUTY is probably the most notable of these. But the characters were multifaceted and you cared about them. Here in Storytelling, the premise seems to be filming a flick about apathy just for the sake of showing apathy.
ANOTHER GLORIFICATION OF UNGRATEFUL LOSERS.......2006-07-16
Why does Hollywood concentrate on people who use their freedom and advantages (more than any country has enjoyed in history)to feel sorry for themselves and destructive behavior
The second tale Non Fiction..is about a family who is physically healthy, have financial freedom and every advantage 90% of the people in the world would cherish..and have no desire to make contributions to a society that has given them so much..Thankfully most Americans are not like these losers, otherwise our republic would not have survived wars, depressions, and constant changes for 230 years.
This is supposed to be an accurate picture of Suburbia..I taught in suburbian America for 35 years..I met parents who cared and did all they could to understand and encourage their children and I had countless students who loved their parents, appreciated their schools and wanted to make the world better..
THESE are the families whose stories deserve to be told..but they run counter to Hollywood's cynical, atheistic view of humanity...
If you don't mind spending your time with self pitying, unappreciating, unambitous, dull people, this film is your cup of tea....(with every bitter herbs..)
Awesome!.......2006-01-01
This is the first film I've seen that for me personally really captures the spirit of suburbia. This is my own experience yes, however, this film doesn't waste any time glorifying or lashing out, it's evenly paced and pointedly wise. The driving force behind the actual 'storytelling' theme is wildly intelligent as well-commenting on the need for suburban creatives to come to terms with, profit from and move away from their pasts without really coming to terms with themselves. The film definitely has some controversial elements to it that will disturb the average moviegoer, but ultimately displays an accurate peripheral vision of the spirit of upper-middle class suburbia.

Tailors are the secret-keepers of the power elite; customize fine apparel for the rich and powerful, and you'll hear things only whispered in the halls of government. Such is the sly conceit of The Tailor of Panama, coadapted by John le Carré from his own novel, and directed by John Boorman with a delicious spin on the traditions of the spy genre. As British MI-6 agent Andy Osnard, Pierce Brosnan qualifies as James Bond's black-sheep sibling, viewing women only in terms of sexual conquest and conducting spy business by his own flexible set of rules. Banished to Panama to pay for recent indiscretions, Andy connects with Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a British ex-convict who's built a lucrative cover as tailor to Panama's highest officials. With the coveted Panama canal now under local control, Andy's arrived to see what Harry knows about the canal's pending multinational sale.
As Andy observes, Panama is "Casablanca without heroes," and that's precisely how Boorman depicts it: a melting pot of greed, ambition, and backroom maneuvering, where Andy can bed an embassy official (Catherine McCormack) while squeezing information from Harry, who concocts a phony "silent opposition" that puts British and American forces on full alert. Harry's wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) is pulled into the scenario by Andy's ruthless scheming, and The Tailor of Panama reveals how a simple fabrication can provoke trigger-happy forces around the globe. Part comedy and part political horror thriller--with a tragic supporting role for Brendan Gleason, from Boorman's The General--this is old-fashioned spy stuff made new by le Carré's inventive plotting and keen ear for the dialogue of rogues. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing Subtle Spy Film.......2007-02-09
I enjoyed this movie immensely. I found it to be very interesting. Geoffrey Rush is very charismatic and rather incomparable in his performance as the Tailor of Panama. This film was made as one of Brosnan's non-Bond films during his tenure as 007 and he expertly plays his British Intelligence part convincingly, very realistically and then some with no hint of the cinematic James Bond entrapping. The plot is intriguing as Brosnan plants innuendo and false information through the connected Geoffrey Rush to accomplish his mission. Boorman gives us great character studies which are the foundation of this little gem of a film. This is a long overdue film of substance from director John Boorman, the man who gave us EXCALIBUR (1981) and POINT BLANK (1967) and DELIVERANCE (1972).
Nice Little Spy movie.......2007-02-09
I really like this little spy film. Great performances all around. A real change of pace.
A must see for so many reasons.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent adaptation of the book. The casting and acting is excellent. Pierce Brosnan is so good in this he should have won the Oscar. Geoffrey Rush is such an excellent actor and this role is perfectly suited to him. I can't help but think that this role may have ruined Pierce Brosnan for James Bond movies since this movie showed he could act, something the James Bond movies don't require.
Silent Heroism.......2006-09-16
John Le Carre is the master of slow-moving, intricately plotted mysterious doings in foreign lands. His method never fails to unnerve me, as I try to figure out what will happen next. What happens next is usally, as in The Tailor of Panama, a crescendo culminating in tragedy although not necessary a "win" for the bad guys. Often, a "lose" for the "good" guys, if a reader can figure out which is which. Which is why I love reading Le Carre and watching the subsequent movie or DVD or both.
Living in the Tailors House.......2006-07-27
I remember seeing this movie when it was in theaters. I liked it but did not love it. It is a movie you have to pay attention to in order to follow along. At that time I didnt really care or think about Panama either.
I purchased it recently because I now live in Panama in the house that was used as the "Tailors" house (exterior only, inside was a set). Watching the film again was more interesting bacause I now understood and knew the concepts (control of the canal) and the area (panama city). They have some great shots of the city and canal in the movie, very "famous" areas.
Overall the movie still wasnt great, but was better the second time around.

Bear Rocks.......2007-03-07
Bear does it again teaching children while entertaining at the same time. This is a good way to keep you child busy while they learn. Bear teaches values and helpful information such as seasons, shapes, colors, potty training, brushing teeth, bathing, sharing, friendship, and alot more.
Bear Entertains and Teaches Cognitive and Social Skills.......2006-08-17
I've heard Bear compared to "Big Bird in a bear suit", but I find this an inaccurate description. Big Bird has a childlike quality to him, while Bear is more like a big brother or a teacher. As he gently guides his Woodland Valley friends to discover the joy of reading or the value of carefully chosing your words, he likewise teaches children important cognitive and social skills.
Bear directly address the audience as he goes through his day in the Big Blue House. My 4 month old giggles with delight as he "talks to her", explaining the lessons of the day. His voice is calming and friendly, and his language doesn't "talk down to children."
On this DVD alone, I have seen lessons on sharing, expressing your feelings, chosing words that do not hurt other's feelings, reading, vocabulary, story structure, different types of stories and ways to tell stories, types of books, use of imagination, and even confidence and how to overcome shyness. These lessons are woven through three eposides through the interaction of the supporting characters and clever and entertaining songs.
The songs on this DVD get stuck in your mind. Although the opening sequence is your typical "welcome kids" song, the ending sequence is a hummable, touching song between Bear and his friend, the moon Luna ("The Goodbye Song"). Other songs include the jazzy blues driven "Say The Words", a reoccuring song between Bear and Ray the Sun "Good Morning", a song that teaches story structure "Once Upon A Time", and a duet that supports imagination and the joys of reading "I Was Just Reading A Book."
The supporting cast play an important role, the "students" to Bear's wise advice. While they learn, so does the veiwer. All the characters are amusing individuals - the hyperactive Treelo, the playloving mouse Tutter, the calmer young bear (and roommate?) Ojo, and the twins Pip and Pop. Shadow, a storytelling shadow, the sun and the moon are major helpers in assisting Bear. Bear wraps up his day, and in turn reinforces and summarizes the important lessons of the episode, with his nightly conversation with Luna.
As a parent who gets trapped watching each episode several times daily, it's also worth noting that the episodes are very entertaining. Irony, puns, and jokes that may go over a little one's head are sprinkled in each episode. For example, the "oldest creature in Woodland Valley", an absent-minded turtle is the "only postmaster" in the valley, while a hard-of-hearing bird is the valley's telephone operator. One book on Bear's table is entitled "Jane Bear" and a newspaper article declared that a snake wrestling tournament ended in a tie. These little touches make the video fun even for the adults who are forced to watch it over and over again at the urging of their little ones.
Most importantly, however, is that my child, a mere 4 month old, loves the entire Bear DVD collection. She is mesmerized by it. If she's going to be entralled by anything, I'd rather it be something that teaches valuable lessons. The fact that I enjoy the DVD is just an added benefit.
words words words.......2005-10-02
My 3 yr old son has quite a few "Bear" dvds and loves them all. I was unsure of this one because he doesn't sit for long stories but it's not like that at all. He asks to see "words please."
Bear in the Big Blue House on DVD.......2005-09-23
Recently, many of the old "Bear in the Big Blue House" video releases have been coming to DVD --- and I think that smells good!
There are three complete episodes of "Bear in the Big Blue House" on this DVD:
"What's the Story?"
A neat episode which Bear and his Big Blue House play host to the annual Woodland Valley Storytelling Competition. This episode contains a lot of interesting ideas about storytelling and has a lot to teach. This one has some fun humor in it too, involving some of the plots of the stories and in-jokes related to the characters.
"Words, Words, Words"
In this episode, Bear thinks about how important words are, and how sometimes, you just can't seem to find the right word for something. He also helps his friends in the Big Blue House to find their words to express their feelings. Harry the Duck (Harry: "Thank you, Mr. Bear." Bear: "You're welcome. And, oh, Harry, it's just Bear.") pays a visit in this episode.
"Read My Book"
Bear orders a new book for his Book of the Month club and ends up receiving a book about how to make slop! It turns out that he got Doc Hog's book, but now it's looking like he might not get the right book in time for the club. Our friends in the Big Blue House all suggest to Bear their favorite books for him to read at the club!
As far as special features go, the "Bear in the Big Blue House" DVDs are generally lacking, so it's a good thing that this is such a good show. The DVD has continuous play-through, "fast-play," which means that it can be used without having to access the menu. This is a standard feature found on most Disney DVDs and other children's releases these days. Naturally, there are promos/previews for other DVDs and movies. These are nice, but tend not to vary too much from DVD-to-DVD released around the same time period. Fortunately, these can be easily skipped and viewed later at your leisure, or not at all, if you don't want to. Other than that, the only other "special feature" is access to sing-along versions of all of the songs, which really isn't too bad.
Overall, I'd say this DVD is definitely worth it, simply due to the great quality of the show, even if there isn't much to speak of in terms of special features.
wonder of kids thoughts on blue.......2001-01-07
I do some chld care and in this I find out a lot about kids and what they think. One of the things I have found out is that kids, or some kids at least love the Muppets, Seasame Street and the caracters of it, Blue's Clues and Bear In The Big Blue House. They like things that help them learn especialy if it is some thing fun that helps them learn. New born to four years is the age range of the kids I get to play with. The younger they are the more simple things they like. Infants to young toddlers tend to love Elmo and Teletubies. Todlers up to four love the others that I mentioned earlier. My niece loves Bear and watches him one to three times a day and usualy only him or one of the other videos she has wich are previously mentiond. I hope that with this info parents and others with relationships with kids will help them learn and have fun with learning using these videos or lesons from a video like them.

Kids rule; stepmothers, witches, and boogeymen drool (quite literally) in this saucy retelling of the classic Grimm's fairy tale. It's night and the kids are in bed, afraid of the dark. Searching for a favorite bedtime story, their modern-day dad--apparently widowed--finds a mysterious volume, dusts it off, and begins to read aloud. Ironically, this 90-minute tale is anything but soothing. Edgy characters abound, from the ax-wielding stepmother (played by Delta Burke with Miss Piggy flair), to a gun-toting wood fairie and a wicked witch (Lynn Redgrave) who nips from the bottle. Thanks to a rather effeminate Sandman (Howie Mandel channeling interior designer Christopher Lowell), the journey takes many wacky turns but ends on a happy note. Add to this wicked brew several spoonfuls of TV references and potty humor, and the result is a show that 8- to 12-year-olds will lap up. --Liane Thomas
Description
When their wicked stepmother strands them in the Magic Forest, things look Grimm for little Hansel and Gretel. On their enchanted odyssey, they encounter everything from a scatter-brained Sandman and a bumbling Boogeyman to a wonderfully Wicked Witch who really likes kids - well-done!

Pure Snoozefest .......2007-05-17
This is one of the all time worst movies, although Material Girls will forever hold the title of Worst Movie Ever. But Hansel & Gretel makes a valiant attempt at capturing that title.
The only reason to actually buy this movie is if you're collecting Daokta Fanning, and she's the film's one redeeming quality. Unfortunately, her role is very small.
If you suffer from insomnia, Hansel & Gretel is the cure you've been looking for.
Hansel & Gretel.......2006-07-06
I really enjoyed this movie, while Howey has changed much from his older comedy routines he is still funny and the rest of the actors add some spice to this satire of an old time classic for the whole family - and that Wood Fairy, WOWZERS!
If you like this one too then you might also be interested in Howey Mandel's "Walk Like A Man", another old time favorite of mine (when Howey had hair!)
Great for all ages.......2005-06-08
Okay, I passed on this one for a while, until I got to see a few clips. All the actors are great and it has just the right touch of satire and unexpected twists to keep your interest.
Delta Burke is perfect. Taylor Momsen shines.
My favorite line of the whole movie--"I see fairytale people" ---delivered by Dakota Fanning--always a great actress in everything she's in.
Highly recommended for your DVD library.
Hansel and Gretel.......2004-10-25
This is a great satire on the traditional version of Hansel and Gretel! My grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this video together. He enjoyed the unique characters and I enjoyed the subtle humor of the dialogue. Delta Burke was the perfect evil step-mother and what a witch Vanessa Redgrave made! The closing line delivered by Delta Burke was priceless. All the actors did a fantastic job in making this version of Hansel and Gretel a movie to add to your collection.
Not for Adults.......2004-08-30
My husband and I often enjoy fairy tales and the like. This was an exception. I will admit that 5-11 year olds probably love this, but why suffer thru it with them. If you like this lame movie you'll probably like The Magic of the Leprechauns too. If you want some clever script-writing, adult laughs, and decent acting in the genre, get Jack and the Beanstalk (The Real Story), Tenth Kingdom, or Snow White: The Fairest of them All.

If you'd rather hear Bruce Springsteen talk than sing or play, then this edition of VH-1 Storytellers is for you. That's not just faint praise. While it's obviously his music that has made his marathon concerts legendary, Springsteen is also a gifted raconteur; "storyteller" applies to no one if not to him. That's the case here, as he is effortlessly funny and wise, humble and self-deprecating, yet still the ineffably iconic Boss. Drawing from the full breadth of his immense catalogue, from early faves like "Blinded by the Light" (referring to Manfred Mann's hit version, he muses about how the British group managed to turn "deuce" into "douche") and "Thunder Road" to several tunes from his 2005 album Devils & Dust, Springsteen dissects his songs line by line, explaining how the music fuels, informs, and complements the lyrics. The insights are often fascinating, as is the reminder that he has always had the knack for taking any subject, be it personal or political, and expressing it in the simple poetry of the common man. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that he performs just eight songs, including two on piano, and that the actual music occupies less than forty minutes of this more than two hour show (counting the Q & A session with the fans). So if it's Bruce's music that you want, check out one of his several excellent concerts or video collections. Heck, the man himself seems to recognize that talking about his songs is somehow superfluous when, after going into great detail about the meaning of and motivation behind the Devils & Dust title song, he says, "How much of this was I thinking about when I wrote the song? None of it. How much of it was I feeling? All of it." --Sam Graham

A inside look.......2007-02-14
Bruce gives a inside look at how he approaches his song writing.Good stuff
what the hell is this?.......2007-02-09
Bruce is one of my favorite singers. I have bought all his cd's and have all his videos. This is one I picked up a while ago and I have watched it twice. While the talk is interesting once, it's unnecessary.
I was under the impression that this was an episode of Storytellers, not an episode of Dissecting Every Line.
Anyway, it really cheesed me that Bruce felt the need to tell me what his lyrics meant! I didn't want that, nor did I need that. So he basically told me many things I already knew. During his 'dissection' of Thunder Road, for example he tells everyone about freedom and what not but I didn't need him to tell me that this part of the song meant 'innocence' and the end of the song was 'just the ride'. I might never listen to the song the same again. It's like trying to tell people what his songs should mean to them. It came across as egotistical and conceited. However, I did like the comments he made about Manfred Mann's cover of Blinded By The Light. HAHA! I hate the song myself and can't stand their version of it. The same for their covers of For You and Spirit In The Night. UGH!!
So while the performances here are top notch, the explanations are easily skipped and thank god they were put on as seperate chapters, or i would have tossed this disc out long ago. Recommended for hard core fans only or for those fans who can't think for themselves and need it explained to them. UGH!!
Disarmingly honest and with perceptive insights into human nature.......2006-05-06
Any inclination to put Bruce Springsteen into the mold of being a shallow pop performer is wiped away after watching "Bruce Springsteen - VH1 Storytellers".
"VH1 Storytellers" is a television program where singer-songwriters perform some of their songs and tell about the how and why of each song's creation. One can argue that the program is more for the education and inspiration of budding songwriters than for fans of the artists invited to participate. Still, I'm reviewing this DVD version of "Bruce Springsteen - VH1 Storytellers" as a fan, not as an aspiring songwriter.
In this program Bruce sings eight songs, accompanying himself on guitar or piano. No band. On "Brilliant Disguise" he invites his wife Patti Scialfa to sing backup, but otherwise he is alone on the stage.
Between the songs Bruce tells the story behind each song. This results in about 40 minutes of music and 56 minutes of talk, at least for the PAL version of the DVD. (Timing may be a bit different on the NTSC version.)
Bruce's discussion of his songwriting is very enjoyable, even confidence-inspiring. He comes across as a disarmingly honest person with perceptive insights into human nature. I found myself liking him a lot, much more than I had expected, having my prejudices regarding what show business and success does to people.
For example, Bruce mentions that he wrote up a lot of notes in preparation for this program. He then quips that on reviewing the notes he thought they made him sound very self-centered, and figured that for that purpose he didn't need notes!
And when discussing "Thunder Road", he dissects the line, "I got this guitar and I've learned how to make it talk." His verdict: "Probably the hokiest line I ever wrote - and I've written a few of them, let me tell you!"
Bruce presents both serious songs and fun songs. The serious songs are followed up by serious discussions of personal ideals vs. politics and reality, the influence of religion (his Catholic background) on his songwriting, and the multiple personalities that we each present depending on the situation. All of which I found fascinating - I was impressed by his understanding and his modesty.
Following the main program there is a 16-minute question and answer session. This too was very interesting, with Bruce talking about his feelings and motives as a songwriter. For example, when asked about "Devils and Dust", he mentions that he has a couple of boys who are 14 years old, so a parent's concern about his child going off to war has become relevant for him.
A few final notes about the DVD itself. As mentioned above, for the PAL version the program is 96 minutes and the Q&A session is 16 minutes, for a total of 112 minutes. Subtitles are available in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish, but not, unfortunately, in English.
Highly recommended, even if you're not a Bruce Springsteen fan.

More music, less talk........2006-04-22
I didn't see the VH1 show, or I might have been more prepared for what I was buying. Saw the duration of the dvd and figured the listed songs must be extended versions.
So I put in the dvd and sat back, planning to enjoy an evening of great music. But then Bruce began to talk...and talk...and then he talked some more. Yes, he talked about the songs and the story they told. He talked about his philosphy of life that was inherent in those songs and the stories they told. Had I not been expecting and looking forward to hearing him sing songs, perhaps I would have been more interested in his outlook on life. But frankly if I want philosophy I don't go to Bruce Springsteen. I go to Tom Cruise.
For TOTAL Bruce Fans -- or Aspiring Songwriters.......2005-11-07
If you love Bruce and go back to the Asbury Park days, you'll love this DVD. Bruce's sense of humor and raw honesty make this so enjoyable for fans. And if you're a musician (or even ex-musician like me) his insights into composing songs are worth the $12.
Bruce took his task of "decoding" his lyrics seriously -- bringing with him a book of notes to which he continually refers. He reminded me of a very hip college professor who is in love with his topic.
The performances themselves are OK, nothing special, but certainly up to Bruce's high standard (in most cases). Sure, he's older (aren't we all?) and it's slightly disappointing to see R&R's most dynamic and honest performer grow slower. So if you can't or don't remember the original Bruce, get one of his earlier DVD performances (but not the Barcelona DVD, it's awful) and definitely pick up "Darkness on the Edge of Town" to get the man at his most powerful. (To really understand the power of his songs and performances get the anniversary edition of Born To Run, which includes a DVD performance of Bruce and the ESB during their first UK tour.)
My daughter knows nothing of early Bruce. She saw this DVD and wondered why so many people love Bruce (yet she loves Dylan's "Unplugged" and Don Henley's "Live", so she has a lot of taste for a 16-year-old). I can see her point. If you don't know Bruce's body of work and can't see this DVD as just a small part of his career, this DVD will disappoint.
But for long-term fans, I highly recommend it.

Ten years and six films (most released straight to video) have made these plucky dinosaurs favorites among the younger set. This new adventure is, well, pretty much like all the others. Littlefoot hears the story of a legendary dinosaur that defended the land years before and is praised by the mysterious land form known as Saurus Rock. When a strange brontosaurus named Doc wanders through town, Littlefoot is convinced he is the legend. Same old fare: earthshakes, mean old "sharptooths" (T-Rexes), lots of screaming, and a lesson learned. Only three songs. The biggest surprise is Kris Kristofferson as the voice of Doc. --Doug Thomas

A phonimal movie.......2007-05-16
in the land before time six it has been a few months since the reunion of little foot and chomper in land before time five. When a series of bad luck strikes the valley after the accidental desturction of Sarus rock. Little foor and his frined petri, sara spike, and ducky must ,ake things right again to save the valley. This movie should be fine for kids ages 12 and up due to occasional scenes with mild cartoon violence and intensity, and mild scary images. If you have kids that like this series but are to young to watch it there is also a land before time tv series that first aired about a couple of weeks ago. The broadcast times differs depending which state or contient you live on. It usually comes on around 9:30 AM here and either befor or after this in the other parts of the world depending on the time differnce between country or city you live in. Can little foot and his friends once again save the day in there newest adventure. This actually not the newest movie but the newest one that they have brodcast on tv was great Long Neck Migration tinnosaurus deep water, and the day of the flyers have yet to be broodcast on Cartoon network. If these movies are broadcast they usally skipp around in the series rather than showing them in chronological order. If you don't want to collect these individual you can get either the first four movies at once or the first nine movies at once. The four movie set tends to be cheaper than the 9 movie set it can cost less 30$ to get the first for movies in DVD fomat if you get them in like new condition instead of good or new condition. I recommend you don't get new version o dvds unleash they are real cheap aunder $20 or $15 dollars like the Epoch Evolution.
This one is my kids' favorite of the series.......2006-03-28
We own probably 8-9 of the Land Before Time series and without question this is the volume that my 3 year old boy will play the most often. His older cousin's mom told me this was her daughter's favorite also. I think kids like the character, Doc, a "long neck" with a John Wayne attitude. The young dinosaurs believe that Doc may be the legendary long neck who long ago defeated a T-Rex and saved the other dinosaurs in the valley. Kids also seem to like the songs in this movie, which are definitely a step up from many of the others. If you're looking to only get a couple from the series, I would recommend the first movie and this one.
The Land Before Time VI-The Secret of Saurus Rock.......2006-02-19
My son absolutely loves the video...was very happy to recieve the tape before his birthday...very difficult to locate because they were produced about 9 years ago...

i love the land before time movies but this is my favorite land before time and this has the best song lone dinosour
blehh........2005-07-09
I don't care for this one, it's cute, but that's all. It doesn't have the beauty like the oringinal nor does it have a meaning like in the 7th and why always about the long necks? If you notices there was many about Little Foot only one about Petrie, one about Ducky and Spike and none about Cera! Little Foot is starting to annoy me. So is Cera.
