One of the touchstone movies of the 1980s, Tootsie stars Dustin Hoffman as an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as a dowdy, middle-aged woman to get a part on a hit soap opera. The scheme works, but while he/she keeps up the charade, Hoffman's character comes to see life through the eyes of the opposite sex. The script by Larry Gelbart (with Murray Schisgal) is a winner, and director Sydney Pollack brings taut proficiency to the comedy and sensitivity to the relationship nuances that emerge from Hoffman's drag act. Great supporting work from Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray, and pre-stardom Geena Davis. But the film finally belongs to Hoffman, who seems to connect with the character at a very deep and abiding level. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I'm Waiting..........2007-06-22

The only thing this movie lacks is a deluxe edition on DVD with commentaries, featurettes, interviews, etc., etc. This is classic comedy, well deserving of its status. So why is the DVD release a bare-bones one with only chapter selection, trailer and printed cast bios the only bonus features? Then again it's not now generally available, which probably means an anniversary edition is in the offing and I've wasted my money buying the currently almost-available version. It's a gem and yes, Dustin Hoffman was robbed. He should have had the Oscar for best actor...or even best actress...no matter who the competition was!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, greater meaning behind it........2007-06-21

Tootsie is a great movie. I loved it as a kid and will still watch it anytime it's on. Dustin Hoffman played Dorothy which such class and he recently elaborated on why he took the part on AFI's 100 Years/100 Films special. He said to his wife that he had to play the part and she asked why. He said because he would make an "interesting looking" woman and he began to realize all of the wonderful women he never had a chance to know in his life because of their interesting appearances and just dismissing them, as Dorothy was dimissed. He was almost in tears as he said this, which teared me up. It's THAT passion that he put into the character of Dorothy and made the story so much more than the script intended.

4 out of 5 stars Tootsie.......2007-05-12

Tootsie is an extremely funny, well-made movie for ages 15 and up. It is an inside look at acting and the acting market as well as a look at people and life itself. The acting and direction are top rate; the pace is non-stop. The story involves a talented actor (Dustin Hoffman) who cannot find work until he makes an impulsive and desperate decision. This decision forces him to look not only at how people treat other people, but also how HE has been treating people in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Tootsie never gets old.......2007-04-03

I saw this movie when it came out in the 80s and loved it. I hadn't seen it in years and have a 15 year old son now, so I bought it to share with him. He laughed all the way through it as I still do. Tootsie never ages- fun and entertaining then and now.

5 out of 5 stars HOFFMAN WAS ROBBED !.......2007-03-27

This is one of the greatest comedies ever made! Hoffman is so convincing that you forget sometimes he isn't a woman. I almost think they gave him an Oscar for "Rain Man" because he was robbed for this film! The whole cast is excellent especially Murry. Don't miss this one...it will zap you in the pah-doo-bees! It deserves a deluxe treament DVD release.

Great little documentary on one of the most interesting places in Nashville

3 out of 5 stars Nice to have, BUT could have been better........2005-09-04

Huge Fan of the place. I have traveled twice to Nashville. And spent a lot of night hanging out at Tootsie's.

The Bar is rich with memories, The DVD did not capture half of it.

The DVD Cons:
1. The quality of the picture and Sound is not up to par.
2. Not enough stories about the legends.
3. Short clips from classical archives.
4. Total running time should have been longer.
5. Come on It is a DVD throw in some Extra Features.

At the end Yes, I am OK with buying it for fact that it captures clips of the legends.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars the story is actually better than the action.......2006-09-08

Yes its true, American Kickboxer 1 is a pure American made kickboxing movie that actually has a better story than the action. Not that the story is anything that will win any awards, but it has some depth and development between character relationships.

John Barret (To The Death, Shootfighter) plays B.J. Quinn, the middleweight kickboxing champion of the world who's unpredictable rage and temper put him in jail for 10 months for accidently killing a man at an after fight party, where his nemesis Jaques Denard, pushed B.J. to the limit. After his release, Quinn trains hard with another kickboxer, Chad Taylor played by Keith Vitali (Superfights, No Retreat No Surrender 3), hoping Taylor will defeat Denard. Denard beats Taylor, becoming the new middleweight kickboxing champion. Because Quinn can not compete professionlly due to his sentence, a $100,000 fight is set up for Quinn and Denard. But in the meantime, Quinn deals with strong emotions within himself and those around him.

Despite the story to American Kickboxer, better acting could have made it more enjoyable. I have to say the actors are about ok in this film - many movies of this calibur have worse acting and some have better. The biggest dissapointment is the fighting. There are plenty of ring fights, mainly between the main characters, but they look fake and tiresome. You can even clearly see the camera jump a bit due to bad editing during the fight scenes. The last fight in the movie between Quinn and Denard lasts a good 9 minutes. The best part is when Denard throws Quinn over the ropes and out of the ring. As for the bad guy Denard, I have to give some credit that he does a pretty convincing job with his character.

American Kickboxer is the opposite of what I expected in every way. The fighting is much worse than I assumed, yet the story is actually better. I'd say give this one a try if you are looking for a bad American kickboxing movie with a little more story to it. Its not the worst movie of its kind made though, thats for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Actor Brad Morris triumphs in fast paced ring saga!.......2005-08-29

Brad Morris is triumphant in "American Kickboxer 1" as ring heavy
Jacques Denard, a relentlessly self-promoting middleweight kickboxing champion. Described by a sports announcer in the movie as "the man the crowds love to hate," the colorful champ
blocks the "boos" of scornful fans by plugging in his Walkman
and dancing indifferently around the ring. He taunts his competitors by erupting into a rock-star kickboxer, who wears
loud arena gear and distracts them with mercurial punches before
overcoming them with direct hits. Denard doesn't break the rules
to win his matches. He reinvents them.

The role of Denard in this fight saga presents an actor with lots of opportunities to chew the scenery. But, Brad Morris shrewdly avoids any over-acting traps and brings Denard to life at a perfect pitch that never reduces the wily champ to a martial arts stereotype. The talented Morris, who developed his skills as a celebrated stage actor from Johannesburg, certainly portrays Denard's flamboyance, but he also allows the audience to see the volatility and insecurities that both handicap and fuel his ambitions. Morris' performance elevates "Boxer" far above Hollywood's usual arena angst dramas.

Morris also contributed to the film as its assistant fight choreographer, but it is his range and intensity as an actor that make multiple viewings of the movie compelling and assure
its frequent showings on television over a decade after its
original theatrical release. Brad Morris is a must-watch actor, and "American Kickboxer 1" is a must-see movie for martial arts fans.
