Edward D. Wood Jr. was an actor writer-director-producer, occasionally in drag, who combined meager bursts of talent with an undying optimism to create some of the most bizarrely memorable "B" movies to ever come out of Tinseltown. Though Wood died in obscurity as an alcoholic in 1978, his films have been considered cult classics for years. He is consistently voted the worst director who ever lived. You would think this an odd subject, but director Tim Burton harnesses the undying hopefulness that made Wood such a character. Shot in black and white, just like Wood's creations, this stylized, witty production captures the poetic absurdity of Wood's films and his unconventional life. Burton's recreation of Wood's wonderfully awful Plan 9 from Outer Space looks much better than the original low-budget quickie. Burton tackled an extremely strange subject matter for a biopic, but Wood is presented as naive almost to the point of delusion, so the story works. The pace sags in the middle, as the weirdness starts to wear thin, but Depp proves himself an adroit actor, even while wearing angora and a blonde wig. Wood's unconventional repertoire company is faithfully reproduced, including an Academy Award-winning Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi. Landau is pathetic, droll, and charismatic as the elderly junkie who made his last screen appearances in Wood's films. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Martin Landau. What an actor.......2007-07-01

Landau made this film what it was for me. The supporting cast was great as well, but Landau was absorbed into his role as Bela Lugosi. Just a masterful work he did.

5 out of 5 stars Great performances by Martin Landauo andJohnny Depp.......2007-06-19

Five stars definitely !

When I was first entertained by this film, I knew I had to buy it and share it with friends and family.

Johnny Depp is just perfect in this role, Ed Wood would be proud !

Martin Landauo is exacting in his performance of Bela Lugosi.

The part I find really funny is where Bela Lagosi's is wrapping the unplugged giant octopus around himself and then pretends to be struggling with it.
Highly recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Masterful and Moving; Ed Wood Triumphs.......2007-05-18

We're sometimes tempted to view Ed Wood as a failure. After all, the man was voted the Worst Director of All Time, and his "masterpiece"--Plan 9 From Outer Space--was once voted Worst Film. It makes the character of Wood pitiable, because he tries so very hard, and doesn't see how talentless he really is.

On the other hand...

Wood did (more or less) what he set out to do. He made films. Not only that, but he wrote them, directed them, and starred in them (like his rolemodel Welles). While Mr. Wood is gone, he also lives on; Johnny Depp played him in a film, and people continue to buy and rent his collection. Whether or not Wood was a good director (and he wasn't), he lived his life as he wanted to live it and he found more success than most of us ever will. I think that Ed Wood is a testament to the power of believing in yourself, and never giving up on your dreams no matter the odds you face.

This film presents that story in all of its richness, whether you ultimately find Wood's character uplifting or laughable. Depp is brilliant, like he normally is: have we ever seen him the same in different films (excluding sequels)? After watching Depp as Wood, it's hard to imagine that anyone else would even have been considered. Lots of people have commented on the genius performance of Martin Landau. I'll make one more. Absolute genius. In this movie, Landau *becomes* Lugosi. It feels real, like you're there, watching Bela Lugosi. Incredible. The other roles, bigger and smaller, all come off. Excellent casting, filling the roles up with big-name actors, but never as a gimmick. Even the casting of former pro-wrestler George "the Animal" Steele is inspired. (One of my favorite moments is when Sarah Jessica Parker "acts" in one of Wood's films; nothing like a superbly talented actress demonstrating what poor acting looks like.)

One of Burton's best films. One of Depp's best films. Landau's best. A feel-good triumph. Five Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Plan on a second investment..........2007-04-12

Buy this movie and I dare you not to turn around and buy some of Wood's films. I saw this movie years ago but did not care for it because at the time I was too young to appreciate the humor. Now that I have seen it again for the first time, I immediately went out and bought Wood's box set.
As far as the movie is concerned, Burton turns the sad and macabre into light humor. Bela Lugosi is portrayed, if you've even seen his movies before, very well by Landau. Depp is perfect as cross dressing Wood. And my personal favorite: Watch for Murray's speech about his trip to Mexico. I about died laughing.

4 out of 5 stars Depp's genius shines through!.......2007-04-11

A movie about a cross dressing director? Sounds crazy, but "Ed Wood" is a wacky, sweet, and endearing movie propelled by the incomparable genius of Johnny Depp. The subject of this movie, supposedly the worst American movie director of all time, is a truly complex character, a man torn by his love of angora and of telling a story on film. It would be easy to make Ed Wood into some kind of lunatic, but through the master touch of Mr. Depp and the skillful direction of Tim Burton, the viewer comes to understand and even empathize with Ed. This movie also has an excellent supporting cast including Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker, and a brilliant portrayal of Bela Lugosi by Martin Landau. The friendship between Bela and Ed is a sweet, endearing thread that is woven throughout the movie. I had heard about this movie long ago, but watched it only a couple of years ago. I am so glad I did, and so glad I purchased the DVD. If you want to watch an artistic, entertaining, and true story about a truly unique character, purchase this film. It will easily become one of your favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-15

Some of these may have been available before now, but none in a WWII set that includes shorts and cartoons from the period. Pick any two you like and they are worth the price. "Command Decision" with Clark Gable as General Casey, a serious officer commanding a bomber group in England, is wonderfully realistic. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" with Spencer Tracy as Jimmy Doolittle leading the first bomb raid on Japan is excellent. The others are just bonus as far as I'm concerned and a very good one at that. "The Hill" is a good military prisoner movie with Sean Connery as a prisoner. "36 Hours" with James Garner is good espionage movie. Air Force is resonably decent account of a B-17 crew that witnessed Pearl Harbor starring John Ridgely. "Hell to Eternity" with Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen is about Hispanic boy raised by Japanese-Americans and fought for United States. Fans of WWII movies should enjoy the set. I recommend it. Especially for a Fathers Day gift.

5 out of 5 stars dvd availability.......2007-03-24

I'm not sure about THE HILL, but the other 5 titles in this collection have NOT been on DVD--at least legitimiate disk. AIR FORCE, THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, and COMMAND DECISION are all wonderful war or combat films (there's a difference between the two--see the books on the genre by Mike Mayo, Thomas Doherty and Jeanine Basinger). It's great that other classics such as THE PURPLE HEART and even the less stellar SO PROUDLY WE HAIL are finally being released this spring on DVD. Collectors and film historians should appreciate all of these titles that really reflected the country's mood between l94l and l945. Propaganda was such a vital component on the home front and these movies show us the nationalistic side of the American people at the time.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-03-13

I disagree totally with the above reviewer. These films are excellent. The only one I am not thrilled with is The Hill, all the others are very good WWII films. I have been waiting for Command Decision for a long time. This collection will not disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Sub-standard WWII Collection.......2007-03-12

Of the 6 films, 3 are old films made in the '40 (Air Force; Command Decision; 30 Seconds Over Tokyo) and widely available in dvds for sometime.

Hell to Eternity is an obscure war film. 36 Hours is more fitting for espionage catagory. The Hill, which is probably the most powerful film among the 6, is a prison film.

A carefully selected Sidney Lumet Collection is highly anticipated.

Description

Edward D. Wood Jr. (1924-1978) remains one of the best-remembered, most talked-about directors in the history of cinema. He is a certifiable legend (well, he was "certifiable" anyway). This fun and fascinating collection throws a spotlight on the man whose work personifies the phrase "so bad it's good."

Here on two diabolical discs are six feature-length films written by and/or directed by and/or starring the unforgettable (or is it unforgivable?) Ed Wood. Plus the original documentary The Ed Wood Story, including exclusive interviews with such luminaries as Dolores Fuller, Bela Lugosi Jr., Martin Laudau and Johnny Depp, among others.

Disc One

GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953) - The cross-dressing classic that started it all, with Wood as a triple threat - writer, director, and star, along with future Plan 9 co-stars Bela Lugosi, Dolores Fuller, Lyle Talbot, and Conrad Brooks.

JAIL BAIT (1954) - Ed Wood goes film noir with this cautionary tale of a naïve young man who is lured into a life of crime. Dolores Fuller and Lyle Talbot co-star once again, and future Hercules Unchained star Steve Reeves has his first speaking role in this film as a police lieutenant.

BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (1955) - One of Wood's most-celebrated...er...creations, with Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist who kidnaps people and tries to turn them into super-men using atomic power. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco make their Ed Wood debuts as Lobo and Kelton the Cop, dis-respectively.

THE VIOLENT YEARS (1956) - Wood penned the script for this good-girls-gone-bad tale, helmed by veteran western director William Morgan. In something of a switch from Glen or Glenda, the girls dress up as boys in order to commit their crimes! Timothy Farrell of Glen or Glenda and Jail Bait is the only Ed Wood returnee here.

Disc Two

NIGHT OF THE GHOULS (1959) - Wood is back behind the megaphone again as the director and writer of this strange tale that is arguably worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space (if such a thing is possible). Western star Kenne Duncan is Dr. Acula (get it?), a phony spiritualist who conducts fake séances. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco reprise their perennial roles as Lobo and Kelton the Cop.

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) - Wood's piece de resistance (or piece of something). The grand-prize winner of so many so-bad-it's-good lists, this horror/sci-fi curiosity has something to do with evil (and kinda bitchy) aliens who come to earth and resurrect the dead, using these vampire-zombies to help them take over the world. Starring Wood favorites Lyle Talbot, Tor Johnson, Paul Marco, Bela Lugosi, and Tom Mason (Wood's wife's chiropractor) as Bela's double (since Lugosi died before principal photography had commenced).

BONUS FEATURE: The Ed Wood Story - An affectionate look at E.W. featuring clips and interviews with those who knew and admired him, including Dolores Fuller, Johnny Depp, and Martin Landau.

Approx. 7-1/2 hrs.

5 out of 5 stars Passport Video got the message!.......2007-04-15

Okay, i was really rough on a previous title by this company because of their highly aggravating huge logo that appeared in the right hand corner of the screen, it was so distracting i couldn't concentrate on the film. This title is different, so far i have not seen that notorious huge logo, i did manage to catch a glimpse of of a small opaque logo saying " Ed Wood", but it was so slight and lasted only a second, it didn't bother me in the least. This is a great value and the quality of the prints are wonderful, great deal, and nice packaging too, no flippers!!! Great deal Passport, hopefully you re-do Bela Lugosi 15 Frightful Films!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the worst .......2007-02-14

This is probably the greatest collection of the worst movies of all times. All are the creations from the mind of Ed Wood. Most people may remember the movie of Ed Wood's life with Johnny Depp as the title role. While that was played for laughs and some pathos, the real story was not too far away. Ed Wood had a true passion for making movies. He just did not make good ones. These are all fun to watch and have a laugh at, but understand that the intent was serious movie making. It might be somewhat sad to watch the declining years of Bela Lugosi, though. Get this set to watch and have fun with.

5 out of 5 stars The Wire; Seasons 1-3; Excellent!.......2007-06-20

Having heard a lot about The Wire, but not having the chance to watch it over the period of time that it was on HBO, I decided to make the 'jump off' and buy all three seasons.

From episode one I was sucked into the action, suspense and drama of The Wire. I see it as a cross between the movie "Boyz in the hood" and the "Law & Order" series. I spent marathon nights watching episode after episode 'til the end.

Waiting anxiously now for Season 4.

5 out of 5 stars Wire - Amazing.......2007-03-09

One of the best series I've seen. The details to bring this as close to real life is amazing. The fascinating part is how each season and characters are interlinked. I am waiting now for the Fourth Season DVD to come soon.

The best series, I've seen from HBO. Its good to go and play the game on HBO website as well.

The Wire sucks you in with one of the best, and overlooked actors, writers, and story line in all of TV. A must, with those who still believe that TV has something to say still.

The Little Vampire is excellently acted and great to look at. Stuart Little's Jonathan Lipnicki carries, on his pint-sized shoulders, his every scene as 8-year-old Tony, befriender of vampires, and the Scottish setting lends itself nicely to spookiness. But where this video earns most points is in the plot department. A continent away from his native California, Tony's having a tough time making new friends when a band of vagabond vampires enters his life through his bedroom window. The encounter seems pure coincidence at first, but then the scary truth surfaces: Tony, though he's not a vampire himself, has "sympathy for our kind," as the dad of the bat-linked brood puts it. Visions of vampire happenings from generations past invade the third-grader's consciousness, and they hold the key to the clan's current gypsy-like predicament. Through his clairvoyance and, by extension, the discovery of a long-lost amulet, the mostly benevolent bloodsuckers are able to reclaim their rightful status as proper cave dwellers in their homeland. Clueless-parent predicaments abound and are cleverer than most--Tony's mom and dad smirk at their son's vampire-obsessed imagination until the cape-draped heads of the clan drop by for a visit--and the gang's adventures eluding a bumbling vampire hunter are genuinely chuckleworthy. At-home Twizzler munchers ages 8 and older won't soon tire of this charmer of a Transylvanian transplant. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-06-27

This movie is a really enjoyable movie for all ages. My son will not stop watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite Movie for MONTHS.......2007-03-30

This movie is so cute! The flying vampire cows are insane. Funniest part of the movie is the farmer who keeps going in to check on the cows! Cute, sweet fun. Get it and watch it with your kids. Very funny movie.

This movie is pretty old so actors are pretty well grown by now BUT my daughter has a HUGE crush on boy who plays Rudolph. Be prepared Moms and Dads as he is a little cutie and your girls will flip over this mini heart throb.

4 out of 5 stars It's Great........2007-03-18

My little sister and I love this movie. So does my mother and she does not like vampire movies, but she say's that this one was good.

5 out of 5 stars A great feel good movie.......2007-01-10

My Grandson has worn out two VHS tapes of this movie. It is one of those movies you can watch over and over with your kids and always find something else to enjoy. We bought him two DVDs for Christmas one for his house and one for ours.
The vampires in this movie are not out to harm anyone, just be a "normal" family. The flying cows are a giggle.
Grade school kids should be fine with this movie, preschool kids may need an adult to watch the first time.

5 out of 5 stars not too scary, but maybe alittle, kid's show.......2007-01-03

This is one of my 5 year old's favorite movies. I bought it after renting it about 10 times from Blockbuster. It is a kid's show, but watch it with them at first if your kids are little. Some of the scenes could be a little intense for first time viewers. However, most of them are humorous and the scary of the scary parts wears off. I love the vampire cows especially.

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Strength of the Human Spirit.......2007-04-21

This is a delightful film. An Officer and a Gentlemen is about the power of love, the importance of friendship, and the choices we make when challenges come our way.

Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) joins the Navy in his hope to become a fighter pilot, where he is constantly challenged , both mentally and physically by the drill sergeant, brilliantly played by Louis Gossett Jr. While this battle is fought out between Gere and Gossett Jr., there is also a sub-plot to the film - that being the friendship with fellow candidate, David Keith. However, the story is strengthened by the powerful relationship that Gere develops with Debra Winger, who plays the part of a factory worker with nuance and vividness, that one marvels at he acting skill.

There is a lot of pathos in this film, which creates emotional responses from the viewer. But there also some fantastic uplifting moments. The soundtrack adds to these moments of joy, and by the end of the movie we feel we have purged our pathos, and we believe in the power of love and remember those that made a difference in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars This Movie will one day be considered A Classic, if not already considered one........2007-03-09

This is My all time FAVORITE MOVIE. If you are a fan of Richard Gere , this is a MUST SEE ! If you LOVE Tear Jerkers with Happy Endings this is a MUST SEE. IF you have never seen it ... IT IS A MUST SEE ! Deborah Winger plays a GREAT part as well as Richard Gere in this movie. It will make you LAUGH, CRY, Make you ANGRY, Make you totally want tohug Richard Gere and make you STAND UP and CHEER. You will really get into the movie and definately lose track of time and get away from " Life" for 2 hours. Take a chance if you haven't seen it. It is worth the price and definately worth your time to watch. I have it on VHS and NOW CD ... I gues MP3 will be next. * Wink *

5 out of 5 stars Romantic movies.......2007-03-08

I made a valentines basket for my sweetheart this year, and along with a bunch of other goodies, massage oils and candies etc, I added a couple of older romantic movies that have been around for awhile. The price was right, and the shipping was fast. He loved the basket!!

1 out of 5 stars Important background of Zachs life cut........2007-02-27

A person viewing this movie for the first time would think that Zach was just a screwup period.
For some sick reason the DvD publishers felt the need to cut out every single scene that involved Zachs growing up, losing his mother to suicide brought on by the lies of his drunken sailor father who never came back to marry her as promised and who he now has to hang with, and is the catalyst for a lot of the later scenes at the academy.

Without these scenes it is not an Officer and a Gentleman at all and only deserves one star because it is not truly the movie that I saw in theatres and on VHS

5 out of 5 stars What a great movie.......2006-11-05

I enjoyed the story line and the performances. Debra Winger did a wonderful job as a woman who was looking for happiness in a place she really did not expect to find it. Richard Gere was excellent as a young man who had practically raised himself but became a man in the military.

It is the future. Society has at last solved all its major problems, thanks to amiable lunkheads Bill and Ted and the inspiring music of their band, Wyld Stallyns. Only one man is dissatisfied with the way things have turned out, the evil De Nomolos. In an effort to change the future, De Nomolos sends evil Bill and Ted robots back in time to prevent the real Bill and Ted from winning a pivotal Battle of the Bands. What follows is a spirited journey through the afterlife as Bill and Ted try to rescue their girlfriends, save the future, and, oh, yeah, learn how to play the guitar. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey swings easily between childish and clever humor, and is good at both: a Bergman reference is quickly followed by an equally funny bit about Death's stinky feet. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter seem happy to be reprising their roles and even manage to add funny spins on Evil Robot Bill and Ted. William Sadler very nearly steals the movie as Death, playing both his wounded dignity and budding desire to be funky to a T. As if that weren't enough, George Carlin returns as Rufus and Pam Grier does a cameo just for the hell of it. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey is ample proof that not all sequels suck. Sometimes they're even better than the original. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars A Rare Superior Sequel.......2007-07-01

This time around bad guys from the future want Bill & Ted dead so there's no peace in the future. They create robot Bill & Ted's to kill them and take their place to make them look bad. They succeed in killing them and Bill & Ted then meet Death (William Sadler from Die Hard 2) who brings them to hell. There they have to relive some of their worse memories in a scene that's more haunting and cool than it is funny.

The laughs come when they have to compete with Death in a bunch of different board games. It's supposed to be that if they beat him in one they can leave but since he's a sore loser he makes them verse him in a few different games before he gives in. The scene works since the under-rated Sadler is in good form as Death and the best reason to see this movie. The scene where Bill and Ted possess police officers gets some laughs as well though. I loved the first one as a kid but trying to get into it now can be hard since it's a bit more corny. The corniest thing about this one is the ending but otherwise it's a good looking film that's also pretty fun.

2 out of 5 stars If there was ever a good a reason to pluck your eyes out on the spot this is it.......2007-04-10

I loved Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It's one of my favorite "teen" flicks. This however, I did not like as much. While the first one was brilliantly stupid, this one was just stupid. Believe me there's a huge difference between the two films. If you watch this, I promise you, you are guaranteed to have your IQ drop. The characters they meet, Station for example, are so stupid looking they remind me of kind of monsters you would find in a little kid's Saturday morning cartoon show. Only in this case, the creature is not animated so it looks million times more ridiculous. I still don't understand why it needed to morph into two little creatures. And the evil Bill and Ted were equally stupid. I mean what was up with them trashing the place for no reason? And why on earth were they detaching their heads? Was this scene really necessary for the general flow of the film? This entire film was ruined by stupid stuff like that. However, if I had found this movie in my cereal box, like some people apparently have, I probably wouldn't be complaining as much. The movie did have some funny parts. At least Bill and Ted's dialogue didn't become redundant......... or at least not in an unfunny way. Their comments were still almost as funny as the first film's, if not funnier in some cases. And the showdown between Death and Bill and Ted was also hilarious, but considering I rented the film and didn't get it in my cereal box, neither of these things makes up for the unwanted appearance of the Easter bunny. What on earth was the director thinking? this film reminds me of a blend of funny jokes with stupid situations. So in conclusion, this movie could have probably been good, if they had changed a few things. Unfortunately, however, they didn't. In result this movie for the most part is unbearable.

P.S. If you haven't seen Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, don't let your opinion of this film get in the way. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was hilarious beyond belief.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-11-17

If you need a quick and easy way to get some laughs, then this movie is for you. Bill and Ted play lots of games with Death and meet Station a weird but somewhat gross character that helps them with their adventures. Makes one think about life again...

2 out of 5 stars Excellent Adventure, but way Bogus Journey.......2006-05-16

This movie was nowhere near the original, so should you wish to watch it, don't expect to be in stitches the whole time. I honestly like it less and less each time I watch it, which to me is a mark of a bad movie. It does have it's moments, hence the 2 stars (it is after all Bill and Ted, it HAS to have moments!). My suggestion is rent/borrow it before purchasing it. If you love it--buy it. If not--don't.

5 out of 5 stars "Drop and give me...Infinity" .......2006-02-06

Bill S. Preston and Ted "Thedore" Logan return in this movie to stop thier evil robot selves. To do so, the dopey duo goes to hell and heaven to find anyone that will help them. Enter: The Grim Reaper and Station. Station is the universe's greatest genius. Station is actually two aliens combined into one huge alien. Station easily makes "Good" versions of Bill and Ted.
This sequel is just as good as the first one...if not better. Few sequels include The Grim Reaper singing!
Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves return as Bill and Ted. George Carlin returns as Rufus.
Be excellent to each other and party on!

Wood's indisputable disasterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space, offers pie-plate flying saucers, incompetent alien leaders, all-seeing psychic Criswell, goth favorite Vampira and a post-mortem appearance by Lugosi himself in his last film role. "This is an excellent box set and you get all of Ed Wood's films. The king of cheapy creepy's for sure. A must have for any cheese lover!" The box set features "Plan 9 From Outer Space" "An Ed Wood Classic! The film features Bela Lugosi in his final role, but for those of us who love Bela it's nice to see him go out wearing his Dracula's cape. Bela died before the film was finished and Wood's dentist?(who is at least a foot taller than Bela, keeping his face covered by the dracula cape in every scene)had to step in to complete the scenes." The whole box set is a gas!

3 out of 5 stars Ed Wood \ Only for the Collector.......2007-01-09

Ed Wood was the worst film producer of all time. His film, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" has been given the title of "Worst Film Ever Made." Ed was a transvestite so he worn angora sweaters and other women's clothes, and you see this in some of the films.
Although many classic films have been reworked and are in pristine condition, what you see is what you get here. They were a hoot and terrible to begin with. There is in the box a DVD on Dolores Fuller and others of Wood's gang gathering for an Ed Wood Showing. How they all ended up being and looking like is so interesting. Dolores lived with Ed and finally got enough of him and moved on. She became a song writer and wrote some of Elvis' lesser known songs. And she still looks good!
I just loved this collection and got a laugh out of all of it. This is a collection only for those interested in early film making, and as part of film history.

4 out of 5 stars Ed Wood: "He Tampered In God's Domain!".......2006-10-28

Edward D. Wood Jr. was born in 1924 in Poughkeepsie, New York; spent his youth torn between comic books, pulp fiction, and movie matinees; and after a World War II stint in the Marines landed in Hollywood with an itch to wear women's clothing, drink to excess, and make movies. The result was a series of remarkably atrocious low-budget movies of the "so bad its good" variety, and this inexpensive box set offers not only the best know titles but unexpected bonuses as well.

Filmed in 1953, GLEN OR GLENDA is Ed Wood's ode to the joys and tragedies of cross dressing, featuring Wood himself as the conflicted hero and Delores Fuller as the girlfriend who keeps wondering why her angora sweaters are stretched out of shape. The 1954 JAIL BAIT is a riff on teenagers gone bad and is often described as the best made of Wood's films--but the term "best made" is extremely comparative, to say the least. The 1955 BRIDE OF THE MONSTER is the only Wood film that actually made back its cost; featuring a desperate Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson, a rubber octopus, and a laboratory helmet that looks suspiciously like a collander, it is easily a Wood fan favorite. The 1959 NIGHT OF THE GHOULS is a kinda-sorta sequel, featuring Tor Johnson once again in a remarkably silly story of fraudulent spiritualists who bite off more ghosts than they can chew.

The most celebrated title, of course, is the 1959 PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, infamous as the film built around about five minutes of film Wood took of Bela Lugosi shortly before Lugosi's death. Fans have attempted to catalogue every error in the film, but it is inexhaustible: no matter how many goofs, mistakes, and disasters you notice, you always see one or two more with every viewing. Day turns to night and then to day--all in the same scene. Cars unexpectedly change year and model from cut to cut. Flying saucers cast shadows in outer space. The list is endless.

NIGHT OF THE GHOULS was never actually released during Wood's life time: he couldn't afford to pay the lab fees for a print of the film, and since the film was never issued the transfer is unexpectedly good. This is not the case with the other titles, all of which were pretty battered by the time video and DVD technology arrived on the scene--but this actually part of their charm. And the set includes an unexpected dollop of bonus material.

The big bonus here is THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ED WOOD JR, a 1996 documentary that intercuts various bits of Wood movies with archeival footage of Wood and his circle and interviews with those who knew him, including his leading ladies Delores Fuller, Mona McKinnon, Loretta King, and Vampira (aka Maila Syrjaniemi.) Perhaps the most interesting subject is Bela Lugosi Jr., who is extremely forthright in his opinion of Ed Wood as a cheapjack opportunist who hitched his wagon to a fading and desperate, not out of genuine affection for Bela Lugosi Sr. but to further his own ends. Coming in a close second in bonus material is SAUCERS OVER HOLLYWOOD: THE PLAN 9 COMPANION, which draws from many of the same sources as HAUNTED but which focuses on this specific film.

While it is true that the set does not include every scrap of Ed Wood material available--for a tenth rate director-writer-actor he was remarkably prolific, racking up fifty credits on such films as THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST and ORGY OF THE DEAD--it will hit the spot for all but the most diehard fan. Ed Wood will never appeal to a wide audience, but if you have the warped sense of humor required to appreciate his films, you'll find this set indispensible.

5 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-15

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

5 out of 5 stars Ed Wood: the man and his mission!.......2006-09-18

Ed Wood? Yup, he's a genius... well sort of. I strongly agree with another reviewer who indicated that a film would need to lack any entertainment value at all to be labeled the worst film of all time. As far as this notion goes, Ed Wood didn't make bad films because every one of the five he made in the 1950's are loads of fun and laughs. 'Glen or Glenda' and 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' are likely my favorites. His first feature, about transvestism, is so inept and so incredibly strange, that one simply watches mesmerized at the audacity and enigmatic spirit Wood demonstrated as a filmmaker in the early 1950's. What can be said about 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,' except that every serious film buff and film maker should make this film priority viewing. The other three films directed by Ed Wood and featured in this box set are all worthy of attention because they're nearly as campy, inept, and hilarious as the other two I mentioned above. On the back of the case to 'Jail Bait,' the film description indicates that Ed Wood, here, made his first legitimate film. If the film is legitimate simply because it is less inept and hilarious than his other films, I do think this statement is quite misleading. Ed Wood never made a film that would receive any serious consideration for legitimacy from the mainstream and the critical masses. Ed Wood, now more than ever before, remains in a class all his own. Ed Wood's films are stamped with his trademark zeal, good humor, and distorted logic, and remain the work of a filmmaker who may have lacked talent, but was never lacking in purpose. The Ed Wood box set is a perfect way to enjoy Ed Wood's films for the first or twentieth time. This set is a great buy, but don't neglect to check out Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' in my opinion, one of the greatest film biographies ever made.

Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly make a cute (if not exactly convincing) couple in this Hollywood soap-opera version of Herman Wouk's coming-of-age romance. French/Russian Natalie Wood is decidedly non-ethnic as Marjorie Morgenstern, the starry-eyed Jewish college girl who falls in love with summer resort small-timer Gene Kelly (who never quite sells himself as a show-biz dreamer with limited talent). A stolid mix of modern, clear-eyed romance and old-fashioned melodrama, it nonetheless manages to slip in some frank (for 1958) discussions of sex and the single girl and sketch out an intriguing portrait of Jewish life in New York's upper crust between the romantic complications. Everett Sloane and Claire Trevor are excellent as Marjorie's success-obsessed parents, pre-Adam 12 Martin (Marty) Milner offers his boy-next-door charm as the former flunky turned Broadway success, and Ed Wynn is delightful as her eccentric uncle. --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars Don't read the book!.......2007-04-21

Yes, I'm a man and yes, I like this movie. It is strictly out of the 50's, however, but that is when I grew up and for that reason the film brings a bit of nostalgia with it. Another reason to watch this film is to see Natalie Wood's big brown eyes just one more time. No, she was never a great actress, although I think that she came close in Love with the Proper Stranger and in Splendor in the Grass, my favorite of her films. This being said, a few notes of caution are in order. I don't yet own the DVD of this title for one BIG reason: the transfer sounds like it is identical to the horrible laserdisc version, which I do own. On that transfer, the color is weak and distorted and the focus is not quite sharp. There are a few splices and one ridiculous jump-cut, as another reviewer pointed out. And to top it off, the movie opens with a trailer which cuts directly to the film, completely lopping off the Warner Bros. logo and the first notes of the main title. I keep hoping for a decent, legitimate transfer of this movie which is the only reason I am at this website. One final word: if you like the movie, don't EVER read the book! It a wonderful book with many "slice of life" truths and contains many poignant moments which the movie misses altogether, the "kiss under the lilacs" being just one example. Once you read the book, you will either throw out the film, or spend a lifetime regretting what should have been done with it! But then, there are those big brown eyes.......

5 out of 5 stars Oldies are goldies.......2007-01-17

This is a movie that is romantic and sweet and never on television. It took me years to finally get a copy of a DVD...I sat one Sunday and enjoyed a movie I haven't seen in years. Definately a "Chick Flick" but we are worth it!

5 out of 5 stars High-Grade Curd.......2005-10-02

Never read the book and, after seeing this, had a hard time imagining why anyone ever did. That said, this misbegotten saga of a Jewish teenager trying to crash show biz (think That Girl with bar mitzvahs) is a semi-forgotten Cheese Fest of the highest order, a real treat for bad-movie buffs who've grown weary of Jackie Susann and Ross Hunter movies. See Natalie Wood spew "You rotten tramp!" to two-timing Gene Kelly. See miscast Gene acting his toupee off during a hissy fit with some Broadway producers. And see wise-cracking Carolyn Jones waltz off with the whole show in the inexplicable role of Marjorie's slutty galpal, a knockout who's somehow unable to hook anyone better than Jesse White (The Maytag Repairman). Vintage Brie gone horribly, odiforously, delectably wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Marjorie Morningstar (1958) .......2005-05-21

Sister #2: Our family had become regulars at the Admiral Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard where we saw "Marjorie Morningstar."

"Marjorie Morningstar," based on the magnificent Herman Wouk novel, had everything a young nine year old dreamer like myself loved: Natalie Wood as a young Jewish would-be actress in New York, Gene Kelly as Noel Airman, the talented and self-destructive music composer, and a catching, sentimental theme song, "A Very Precious Love."

I remember being particularly astonished at the scene where Natalie Wood (Marjorie) discovers Gene Kelly (Noel) has been with another woman and slaps his face saying, "Get out of my way, you rotten tramp!" I had begun a pre-adolescent crush on Gene Kelly a year earlier and, thanks to my mother's doing, had received his black and white, autographed picture in the mail.

3 out of 5 stars So Bad It's Good.......2004-01-02

My wife and I laughed so hard we GUFFAWED at this sublime example of cheesy 1950s film-making at its cheesiest. Gene Kelly blowing his stack at a trio of Broadway producers is so off-the-wall and over-the-top it's worth the price of admission by itself; all that's missing is his stepping out of character at the end of the scene and exclaiming "ACTING!" a la SNL's classic "Master Thespian" gag. We truly did not want this movie to end -- and never for a moment believed it was what Herman Wouk had in mind.

Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd, Horatio Hornblower) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help from former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon, Nip/Tuck) in order to pursue outer-space research into human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis, The Shield); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba, Dark Angel, Sin City), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans, Cellular). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.

Among the many entries in the comic-book-movie frenzy, Fantastic Four is refreshing because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Characterization isn't too deep, and the action is a bit sparse until the final reel (like most "first" superhero movies, it has to go through the "how did we get these powers and what we will do with them" churn). But it's a good-looking cast, and original comic-book cocreator Stan Lee makes his most significant Marvel-movie cameo yet, in a speaking role as the FF's steadfast postal carrier, Willie Lumpkin. Newcomers to superhero movies might find the idea of a family with flexibility, strength, invisibility, and force fields a retread of The Incredibles, but Pixar's animated film was very much a tribute to the FF and other heroes of the last 40 years. The irony is that while Fantastic Four is an enjoyable B-grade movie, it's the tribute, The Incredibles, that turned out to be a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Not the best I've seen .......2006-09-17

When it comes from Marvel Comics, I know that this movie is a must see in my part. In the end, I was a little disappointed because the storyline was kind of weak and the acting mediocre. Although, what I've learned in film school is if the writing of the movie's bad, it can make the actors look second-rate. I've seen Jessica Alba perform much better in other movies and TV. Even though I didn't think all that highly of the movie, I am looking forward watching the sequel, "Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer" which comes out in June of 2007. :)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, a few gripes though.......2006-01-13

I thought FF was very entertaining. Since there are already so many other reviews here, I will be brief. Great effects, decent acting (not Spiderman, but not Revenge of the Sith either). I don't know why the critics were so hard on this one.

Minor Quibbles:
As a FF comic fan, I was disappointed by Dr Doom. His whole persona was invented to keep the movie short, and he was a little more like Richie Rich than Dr Doom who I chose to remember as a frightening and powerful persona, more than a match for any of the Marvel heroes.

I think its annoying that Reed and Sue were reverse-aged so they could cast Jessica Alba as Sue, and have a premarital romance in the story. I always thought it was cool that they were middle-aged heroes. Alba looks good, but a blond Angelina Jolie or Natasha Henstridge might have been a little more formidable. Alba seemed like a cheerleader type. The other actors were fine for the most part.

If they can squeeze 3 hours out of King Kong, take some more time and get the story right.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Four. Entertainment to go. .......2006-01-02

I have recently received this as UMD(Universal Movie Disc) as a present. The picture quality on the PSP is that of a mini Plasma Television so this is definitely about the same picture quality if not all aspects of the DVD version of this movie. I watched the opening titles for it and the illustrations proved crystal clear. Some drawbacks include the 4" inch screen of the PSP, which seems generous enough but really feels overly contained. The fastforward button on the PSP headphones and the right trigger of the controller are both convenient to use while watching this. This product is good enough if you want to watch a movie on an airplane or in your car but it will never replace a home theator system because it isn't that inclusive. The screen of the PSP isn't very big, the sound quality is so so.
Conclusion
1)If you really want to have portable video games and the prospect of watching Hollywood movies on the go intrigues you this will suit your needs just fine
2)If you are a movie buff, I would recommend buying the DVD version of this movie because of the special features it includes, you are better off with a portable DVD player because the screen size will be much bigger and the sound quality will be greatly enhanced
3)and if you can afford to spring for a laptop you should do so because it will suit all of your portable needs including movies, music and internet.
Fantastic Four is a very good and interesting movie. It is the kind of movie one can only watch a couple of times so buy it for PSP(UMD) format instead of for DVD because then you can be entertained with it in those situations where you need to kill time such as on a flight, in an airport or in a doctor's waiting room. It is great to sit with a friend on a bus and split the headphones. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars A good action movie XD.......2005-11-02

This movie is directed from Marvel Comic Book Characters The Thing(Ben Grimm), Invisible Woman(Sue Storm),Mr.Fantastic(Reed Richards) and Human Torch(Johnny Storm).Prepare for the Fantastic!

A group of astronauts,Reed Richards(Ioan Gruffrud),Sue Storm(Jessica Alba),Johnny Storm(Chris Evans),Ben Grimm(Michael Chiklis) and Victor Von Doom(Julian McMahon) gains superpowers after a cosmic radiation during their outer space experiment and must use them to defeat the evil Doctor Victor Von Doom

I think this movie can improve on the part that it should have some exciting action scenes.

I think this movie is great because I like the special effects.

The length of the movie is approximately 1h and 40 mins. This movie is just right for action-movie lovers.

I love this movie and would want to watch it for the 2nd time.

2 out of 5 stars Not really Fantastic.......2005-09-09

As an avid reader of the FF and Silver Surfer comics in the '60s I can safely say that the movie is an unabashed rip-off of a great story line. The characters are nothing like their comic book forebearers and were updated simply for modern action fan appeal. In the original Reed had confidence in all he did (not so in the current movie) likewise, Johnny was, in the otiginal, a typical post high school "kid", not a pleasure seeking smartass (as in the current), Sue, originally, was the "innocent little girl" type instead of the current, confident businesswoman. In the original she was able to act the victim even while saving everyones life, not so in the current. Ben, in the original, was a big "sensitive softie" who could rip your head off if provoked. Instead, we are given the current day, bitter, victim of circumstance, played by Mr. Chiklis. Alicia (Bens girlfriend in the original) is completely absent. The action was passable, even if it was overplayed, but beyond that it's a loser, a major disappointment for anyone who read the original comic book series.
