Cary Grant and Sophia Loren look just swell together in Houseboat, and why shouldn't they? Grant was still at his best, Loren was bewitching Hollywood as an exotic new ingénue, and offscreen they had had a torrid affair a couple of years earlier, during the shooting of The Pride and the Passion. The two tanned stars are the main attraction in this romantic comedy, which installs single dad Cary and his three children on a dilapidated houseboat on the Potomac River. Sophia is the maid, except she's not really a maid but the cultured daughter of a famous musician. Yes, this is one of those situation comedies in which every problem could be cleared up if only one character told the truth about the situation. If that sort of thing drives you crazy, best skip this one. It's no classic, but those two icons are awfully appealing. --Robert Horton

An Excellent Romantic Comedy.......2007-06-19
Director Melville Shavelson is known for directing some successful romantic comedies involving families; two divorced adults and their offspring's. He takes credit for not only Houseboat, but also for "Yours, Mine and Ours," casting some successful stars of the day. This family drama casts Cary Grant as Tom Winters, a widower trying to raise three children alone away from his work at Washington D.C. to country side closer to relatives of his former wife. His young children love the younger sister of their mother but Tom is not too thrilled about dating her. Instead he meets a young Italian named Cinzia (Sophia Loren) who is a socialite trying to get away from her overprotective father. Initially there is no romance between the two, and in addition, his kids are less than thrilled when she is hired to work as nanny. Things get rocky but soon all ends well when they feel that they need each other. Parts of this movie were filmed on the Potomac River and Piscataway Creek at Fort Washington marina. This is an excellent family movie, which I recommend very highly.
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL GRANT MOVIE.......2007-06-02
My father and I watched this movie at least a thousand times since I was a little girl.As I got older and started loving the romance of the movie I couldn't believe how I had missed one of the sexiest seens in any movie I have ever watched.Cary and Sophia are dancing to this beautiful melody when Cary finally realizes that he is lovestruck. It is a powerful seen in the movie and the melody made the seen as well as Cary and Sophia.Wonderful movie to watch with your whole family!
A Fair Romantic Comedy.......2007-05-20
This is an old one that is still quite enjoyable.
Cary Grant is a divorced man whose wife has been raising their children. He loves the kids but doesn't have a clue or a manual. When the ex wife dies, he is left in a position to take care of them. He does the best he can which is none too well.
Grant realizes that he will need to take some time away from his job in DC. He plans to move to the country closer to his ex inlaws. This is done with the idea that they will help with the kids and also because there is a suspicion that he will eventually marry the younger sister of his former wife. (Apparently there is a history.) The aunt gets along well with the kids who are not thrilled with their father.
Meanwhile, Sofia Loren is the daughter of a famous Italian musician on tour. She is chaffing under her father's stern rule and just wants to have some fun. She makes an escape and meets up with one of the kids who helps her to escape from her father's minions. She returns the boy home and is coaxed into serving as a nanny for the kids.
Grant's plans for moving do not work out as expected and the whole family temporarily ends up living on a houseboat. The comedy takes off from there as Loren and Grant find that they have feelings for each other and the kids stir things up.
For me, this one was on the cusp between 3 and 4 stars but I am in a good mood. I did enjoy it and it is worth seeing.
Houseboat - Cary Grant.......2007-05-14
Cary Grant is one of my all time favorite actors, I found this movie to be light and fun to watch it is one of my favorite movies. Sophia Loren was not only beautiful but was delightful as was the whole cast encluding the children.
Loren and Grant.......2007-02-20
This is a very cute movie!
Sophia Loren is just fantastic!!
Cary Grant is great in a subtle way. He progresses throughout the movie in a nuanced manner.
They both have great chemistry!
Mimi Gibson, Paul Petersen (of Mouseketeer and Donna Reed fame) and
Charles Herbert all put in great performances as the children.
There is even a minor supporting roles by Murray Hamilton as Grant's cheeky friend and Loren's father's manager, played by the very comic Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink). And, Harry Guardino who plays the ethnic Italian almost suiter, Angelo Donatello, was nominated for Golden Globe. The picture was nominated for two Academy's - Best Original Song ("Almost in Your Arms") and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay. The movie and Grant did win two Golden Laurel Awards for Top Comedy and Top Male Comedy Performance.
Mel Shavelson, who did a lot of romantic pictures like "April in Paris" and "Yours, Mine and Ours", did a great job pooling the acting team together in an innocent comedy that works the way they should - and that is not easy.
Loren get's Americanized while she teaches Grant to grow up. It has what is missing in contemporary chick flicks.
See this - you won't be disappointed!

Description
In "Adrift on the Nile" we meet a group of hedonistic middle-aged friends who gather each night on a luxurious houseboat for dancing, love-making and smoking hashish. When a young news reporter visits the houseboat to write a story on the group, she is outraged to learn the tragic depths of their social alienation. Based on the novel by the Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz, this 1971 production offers a revealing look at the Egyptian elite on the eve of the 1967 War. By this time, Nasser had ushered in an age of enormous social change, leaving the sons and daughters of the old bourgeoisie high and dry. Directed by Hussein Kamal, "Adrift on the Nile" features the atmospheric cinematography of Mostapha Emam and a delightful musical number in color. DVD EXTRAS include English and French subtitles, rare original trailer and filmographies.

Give me a deck chair, a book, and a bottle of sunscreen........2004-04-19
A charming trip along the waterways of England. I enjoyed this DVD and replay it often. It's a window into a peaceful world with decent photography, lovely scenery and an unintrusive narrative.
A Primer On a Unusual Experience.......2002-04-21
This is an excellent film about traveling by narrow canal boats and provides a how-to guide for those who have never had the experience of doing so. I have always wished to see travel features that actually provide something of the experience of a drive or a walk, so that the viewer can get the feeling of the journey vicariously without actually being able to do it in reality. Such a film would probably be too long and dull when covering areas that you are not interested in while too short when showing areas that do interest you. So travel features rarely replace the reality of doing it yourself. With the impossibility of such a goal understood, this program did give me the feeling that I had just been on a short vacation and had made such a trip. I felt rested after watching it and more knowledgable having witnessed some of what needs to be mastered to make the journey for real. While not a replacement for an actual trip this was a good taste of the journey and I am glad I have ths DVD in my collection to experience it again from time to time.

Description
Ronnie is on the run from the police. His friend McFee shoots a worker and Ronnie takes the blame since he owes him a favor. His disguise fools his ladylove Joan only for a short while. Convinced by Joan that he should give himself up to the police, Ronnie is saved by his friend McFee who owns up to the killing. Sprinkled with odd moments of predictable humor and a sketchy insight into the lives of folks living on the waterfront, the movie is held together by the charm of debutant actress Ann Rutherford.
Customer Reviews:
It's All About The Girl.......2006-05-05
This would be a typical crime/wrong man accused film except for one thing - Anne Rutherford.
I'm not sure why this lady did not become a big star. She should have. To be honest I think she is the hottest actress I've seen in a wrong time. I could not keep my eyes off hte screen when she was on.
She is very, very beautiful and her acting was decent as well.
The film itself follows the usual formula: girl helps wrongfully accused guy. Real villian gets arrested at the end. Girl and guy fall in love.
Without anne rutherford it woudl be three stars. With her its five stars.
