The Advocate is an intriguing medieval court drama set in the days when humans and animals were both known to contain the devil. Courtois, an educated lawyer (Colin Firth), leaves the big city to find peace in the countryside but finds murderous acts holding the small hamlet in fear. To the town folk, Courtois's intelligence is nearly as mysterious as witchcraft, which is all the talk of the day. Since we rarely see a movie set in this time period, it intrigues but doesn't teach beyond its initial premise: animals can go on trial. The film is supported by some wonderful character actors, including Ian Holm as a priest with very liberal views and Nicol Williamson as the unofficial king. Lots of naughtiness mostly played for laughs makes this the first thinking person's ribald classic. --Doug Thomas
Description
Screen favorites Colin Firth (WHAT A GIRL WANTS, BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY) and Ian Holm (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy, FROM HELL) star in THE ADVOCATE -- one of Hollywood's most controversial films in years and described by many as provocative, sexy, and fascinating. A courtroom thriller with a passionate edge, it's the story of a dynamic young lawyer (Firth) whose quest for the simple life leads him to a law position in a small rural town. What he finds instead is a disturbing case of murder, seduction, and corruption -- a case that reveals the mystery beneath the village's quiet facade. Yet as he searches for answers, he finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue and betrayal. Don't miss this sexy thriller -- a dark story about the many sides of truth, and passion's deadly price!

Former Navy pilot-turned-JAG attorney Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) finds a connecting thread through a number of seemingly random cases he takes on in JAG (Judge Advocate General): The Complete Third Season. The thread concerns the fate of his father, a Navy pilot shot down over Vietnam and missing in action since the war, a fact that has possessed Harm since childhood. Building on scattered clues and shards of testimony, The Complete Third Season suggests that the elder Rabb fell into the hands of the Soviet Union, a possibility that Harm is compelled to investigate all the way through a taut, cliffhanger ending involving a stolen, Soviet MiG fighter. Not that everything is about one storyline. The rest of season three features the usual mix of interesting military cases, a few with strong parallels to events in the real world. "Ghost Ship" concerns the discovery of a human skeleton between two hulls of a decommissioned carrier (that happened to be where Harm's father served). The remains are of a man who appears to have been murdered circa 1970, and the whole case brings back a lot of ghosts for Harm. "The Court-Martial of Sandra Gilbert" finds a welcome guest-starring role from Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays a Cobra pilot on trial for allegedly maintaining an affair with an enlisted man despite orders to cease. The situation pits Harm, defending Mitchell's character, against his JAG colleague Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), who volunteers to prosecute the case to assure fairness toward the accused. When the case becomes a hot, political football, both Harm and Mac find themselves in a very delicate situation in the national spotlight. "King of the Fleas" is an unsettling episode about a disabled, Vietnam War vet who kills a Vietnamese-American man he claims was a war criminal. He also provides the first eyewitness account that downed, U.S. pilots in Vietnam were taken into custody by Soviets, a claim that galvanizes Harm. Also provocative is "Above and Beyond," in which an African-American Navy SEAL, believing he is subject to a racist, double standard of scrutiny, chafes under an investigation into his worthiness to receive a Medal of Honor. --Tom Keogh

The program is great, however, even by having to return the first order due to it being incomplete, the replacement was also faulty. One of the discs had a unfixable scratch and one episode did not have an ending..........OH, well.....can't win them all. Wish things were again made in the US of A. Maybe fewer errors.

JAG (Judge Advocate General): The Complete Second Season finds former Navy pilot turned JAG lawyer Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) partnered with an attractive marine attorney, Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), in both the prosecution and defense of military service personnel charged with crimes. Helped by boyish, chipmunk-cheeked law student Lt. Cmdr. Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux) and guided by the tough but fair Admiral Chegwidden (John M. Jackson), Harm and Mac take on some pretty novel cases, beginning with the bizarre theft of the Declaration of Independence by Mac's own uncle, a renegade colonel trying to make a point about the fecklessness of the U.S. government. In "Secrets," a convicted spy (Victor Love) escapes from a Navy brig, taking Chegwidden--who successfully prosecuted him--hostage, and demanding that Harm and the others look into his allegation that the CIA set him up to look like a traitor.

Harm often gets assignments that require more than his legal-eagle skills. In "Washington Holiday," he's ordered to escort a Romanian princess (Kiersten Warren) through Washington while her father negotiates with the U.S. State Department for application to NATO. It's not an unpleasant task by any stretch, but it is perilous, considering an unidentified assassin is lurking around the nation's capital, waiting to kill the royal daughter. "Cowboys and Cossacks" is a tense drama about two Cold War-era warship captains, an American and a Russian, who turn a joint war games exercise into a personal grudge match—with Harm, Mac, and Bud trapped as official observers. "Rendezvous" is an interesting story about professional ethics that pits Mac against Harm in a case involving a wife abuser--with Mac reluctantly providing the accused man, a monstrous fellow, her best defense. Created by Donald P. Bellisario (Quantum Leap), JAG is never dull and often surprising. --Tom Keogh

Catherine Bell, with her multi-facet character, brings the spice to this second series that the first series was missing. The relationship between Mac and Harm, played by David James Elliot, is so much more interesting than when his partner was played by Tracy Needham, who was like his kid sister. In this series you can see the groundwork for the future series which became so great, with the introduction of the Bud, Harriet and Admiral Chegwidden characters, all of whom are just right. It is like having all the right ingredients in a recipe. The introduction of the court room scenes as well as more time spent at the Jag offices, serves as a welcome balance to the great adventure scenes and really allows us to get to know the characters.

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear--what's an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis Cyphre--get it?). In The Devil's Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham's The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction, gleefully showing off his--and the Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford (Against All Odds, Dolores Claiborne), who provides alternate-track commentary for the movie itself, plus a dozen deleted scenes. Also note: due to a settlement with artist Frederick Hart over the movie's use of a sculpture resembling his Ex Nihilo in Washington's National Cathedral, future releases of the film will be altered. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Shocking and entertaining!.......2007-06-25

When I first saw Devil's Advocate, I was more excited to see Charlize Theron than the actual movie. However, the storyline pulled me in and I enjoyed it very much.

So what's this movie about? Basically, this movie surrounds the life of Kevin, a lawyer who has been offered the job of a lifetime as a defense attorney under John Milton's firm in New York. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, pack their bags and everything appears to be great once they're settled. However, things turn for the worse when Kevin finds out that he is literally working for the devil.

So what's to like about this movie? First, there are quite a few star actors/actresses in this film including Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, and the amazing Charlize Theron. This movie is certainly one that contains great acting. Second, the storyline may seem corny but it is truly done wonderfully. The writers make the story seem real (except for one scene at the end) and the things that happen to Mary Ann and Kevin are believable, relatable, and human-like despite the whole devil aspect. Third, I experienced a ton of emotions throughout the movie. Some scenes made me angry, some made me joyful, and a lot made me upset/sympathetic. I truly didn't expect much out of this movie and it is now one of my favorites.

And what's not to like? Not much. Although it is rated "R" (which means that you should expect adult language and adult themes), there is a lot of nudity. Certainly more than I expected. Second, one scene towards the end sort of changed how realistic the movie was. If that scene was removed and it was done differently, I would have given this movie 5 stars.

If you're looking for a movie with emotion, shock, great acting, a great storyline, and an interesting message, Devil's Advocate is it.

    4 out of 5 stars Vanity..........2007-05-15

A very good movie, Devil's Advocate, brings to the screen the story of an unbeatable young lawyer from Florida who is invited to NY, along with his wife, in order to join one of the most prestigious law firms in the city. Things take a turn for the unexpected as NY is known for being a place where there's often much more than meets the eye...
Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron and Connie Nielson (both of whom are GORGEOUS!), and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Devil's Advocate is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

    1 out of 5 stars Surely the Devil's work.......2007-04-20

I know I am up against many people here who have rated this move quite highly, with that I am willing to accept that I must of missed the point to this movie giving the fact that towards the end I hated it so much. I couldn't watch another second of it and turned it off with roughly 5 minutes to go, Pacino's last scene where he tells Keaunu the truth would have to be one of the worst written scenes I've ever seen. I found the first hour extremely boring, then it started to get a little bit interesting and then in the last half an hour it lost me again. Don't get me completely wrong the acting in this movie was A class from all actors, it's just a dam shame about the script. If I could give this movie 0 stars I would but seeing that I have to give it 1 the 1 star goes for the acting.

    5 out of 5 stars A Keeper !!!.......2007-04-09

So there isnt anything I can say that has not already been said, just know this is a great movie, a classic if I may say so my self. Its worth youre time!

    5 out of 5 stars Devil's Advocate..........2007-02-03

This movie was out there...but then again...what did you expect from anything where Mr. Mestophiles is concerned? Especially since if he's your boss? Mr. Pacino is nothing, if not brilliant! Keanu Reaves is in great form as the swaggering young attorney working for Mr. Pacino's firm. See for yourself (get yourself an inexpensive copy!) Five stars!!

4 out of 5 stars Season One and that's it for me.......2007-03-29

I was so glad to see that the first season of JAG was finally released on DVD. It was the only season I watched with regularity and was surprised as I watched the series again that there were certain moments that brought about a sense of deja vu.

Lieutentant j.g. Meg Austin was and remains my favorite partner for Harm because she was, first and foremost a Navy officer and a JAG lawyer. Theirs was a very natural chemistry even before they got past the formalities of "Lieutentant" and "Sir" and it became clear early on that Meg was falling for her senior partner.

It took Harm a little longer to begin to see Meg differently and that transformation seemed to take place after "Hemlock", when she was left in a coma from an assassins bullet.

She also didn't hesitate to put herself in certain situations when she deemed it necessary in the course of an investigation. She posed as a Marine recruit in "Boot" to find out why another young recruit was found hanged. She went out into the field in "High Ground" when a Gunnery Sergeant escaped from the Brig and Harm went after him to bring him back in.

It wasn't until "The Prisoner" after Harm was imprisoned by the Chinese, that Meg finally voiced her feelings for her partner.

The monkey wrench in this whole thing was Commander Allison Krenick. From the first time she laid eyes on Lieutenant Rabb, the Commander made no bones about that fact that she wanted him.

She was the complete opposite of Meg, who chose to keep her feelings to herself. Krenick on the other hand, tried to devise any manner of situations that would get her alone with Harm, but was always thwarted.

When Meg would find herself alone with him, usually in some manner of undress it was the result of a situation they hadn't planned on.

I must admit that I never understood the whole Mac and Harm phenomenon and never thought that they had much chemistry together. That was one of the reasons that I didn't watch JAG very regularly beyond the first episode of the second season.

Without Meg Austin, JAG just wasn't as good.

what happened to the blond actress????????? she was very good loved the first season the best.

5 out of 5 stars JAG, we will miss you........2006-12-15

Probably the best show, series on TV. Sorry it ended after an astonishing 10 years. Military, with subtle sexiness and real life .

5 out of 5 stars Complete first three seasons a must for the real fan.......2006-12-10

Its rare when DVD season sets are released close together. Usually fans have to wait 10-12 months for a new release, but Paramount Home Entertainment has done right by the fans with this quick release of JAG Season Three on DVD, coming just four months after the incredible quick turnaround between seasons 1 and 2. Maybe its because they made us wait so long to begin with. But yes JAG fans, the Harm and Mac Attack is back. For those unfamiliar with the show, JAG tells the story of officers of the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps. Both investigators and lawyers, the JAGs go wherever the case is, whether its on the deck of a 75,000 ton aircraft carrier or with a Marine fire team in the field.

JAG Season Two was a milestone of sorts as well as a transition. Picked up after its cancellation by NBC after Season One, JAG was given 15 episodes to make its case to stay on the air. With the introduction of new characters, it quickly garnered more viewers and became a success for CBS,leading to a full season pick-up of 24 episodes for Season 3. Season 2 saw the arrival of feisty and beautiful Marine lawyer Major Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell) to join Tomcat pilot/Jag lawyer Lt.Cmdr. Harmon Rabb (David James Elliot). Mac was a great foil for Rabb, and the two characters had a palpable chemistry from their first episode together, We The People. (this chemistry was first seen in Bell's brief appearance in the 1st season episode Skeleton Crew, where she played Harm's murdered girlfriend.) Season 3 saw the fleshing out and development of the core cast, and the show took on a brighter and more engaging tone.

With the arrival of Mac however, we said a fond goodbye to Harm's former Season 1 partners, Lt. Meg Austin (Tracy Needham) and Cmdr. Allison Krennick (Andrea Thompson). Needham's departure was sad given the intelligence and chemistry she brought to the role of Lt. Austin, but with a new network, changes had to be made. Executive Producer Donald Bellisario decided to bring in Catherine Bell and focus the stories primarily on the team of Mac and Harm in Season Two, with great results. Lt. Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux), Ensign Harriet Sims (Kerri Turner), Petty Officer Tiner (Chuck Carrington), and CIA Agent Clayton Webb (Steven Culp) became regular characters, adding some fun to the mix, and the decision to keep Admiral Chegwidden (John M. Jackson) as the head JAG after Season One was a smart one. Jackson had the right amount of humor, gravitas, and fierceness to play the part.

The visual feel of Season 2 was improved, with less reliance on stock footage from films as was seen in Season 1. In Season 2 the Navy started allowing filming on location, making the look and feel more realistic. The biggest improvement was seeing Harm and company in the courtroom more, whereas Season 1 rarely had episodes focusing on the lawyer part of JAG. Overall storylines were tighter and better in Season 2, with well thought out episodes such as Secrets, The Guardian, Code Blue, and Heroes the standouts in the season. Season 3 saw the growng love of Bud and Harriet, the introduction of Harm's nemesis Clark Palmer, and the resolution of Season 1 episode Skeleton Crew, as we finally discover who killed Harm's girlfriend Lt. Diane Schonke.

The extras in the three season sets are somewhat limited due to the quick turnaround time between the release of the three seasons. Each season gets several audio commentaries and several featurettes with interviews with the cast and crew. At $35 a season, this is a nice package for the fans of the show who missed out on the first two releases and want to catch up. Highly recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars Would I recommend? Hmmm..........2007-01-04

This really is a quirky movie with a lot of humorous moments. It is unclean in the most literal sense-everyone could use a bath. Colin Firth and Donald Pleasence perform well, as do others. However, I am still completely stumped as to what the big surprise is. We the viewers are implored to keep it a secret, but I have no idea what the spoiler is, and I watched it twice! I am usually not so dull to details, but this one escapes me.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed product saved by Firth, Holmes, and Pleasence.......2006-06-10

This is a very uneven film, to say the least. I would like to discuss the storyline/plot; the humor; then the film making and editing; and finally the actors.

First, this is the story of a dark time in human history where theocracy and fear of witchcraft ruled the minds of common people while wealth was concentrated in the hands of a few. It was a time of anti-semitism; torture; poverty; plague; and injustice. Into this mix comes a handsome young lawyer, played by Colin Firth, who defends witches and homicidal pigs. He falls in love with a Jewish beauty who seemed more gypsy than Jew. The story appeared to be written by a committee who could not decide if they were writing historic fiction, social commentary, or slapstick comedy. Dark humor prior to executions gave the film a odd sense.

Second, this film was poorly edited. Scenes were cut short and I felt constantly jerked around by amaturish film editing.

Third, the cast was actually superb even if the rest of the film was weak. Colin Firth never overplayed his part. For Colin Firth fans, he appears nude in several scenes. Ian Holmes was very good as a corrupt priest who advises Firth. Donald Pleasence wins the award for highly professional acting in a poorly developed story. Pleasence plays a aged lawyer who outsmarts and outmaneuvers Colin Firth in the courtroom.

Idiotic story with good acting - gets a 3 in my book.

5 out of 5 stars What year was this??.......2005-06-16

A fascinating film that reminds us just how little has changed since the middle ages. This film could have easily been set in today's America, with it's take on "values", "morality" and other buzzwords, which are as eagerly used in today's "justice" system as they were then. If judges and Christians scare you as much as they scare me, you will enjoy this film.

4 out of 5 stars Based on unusual history.......2005-06-04

A friend pitched this movie to me as an uproarious Monty Python-like film about medieval lawyers. The Miramax marketing division tried instead to promote it as a sensual murder-mystery and courtroom thriller. (They failed, however, to mention that it's set in the Middle Ages.) The truth is somewhere in between -- yes, The Advocate is funny, but it's no thigh-slapper. Yes, it contains something of a murder-mystery (with a large black hog as its primary suspect) and courtroom drama, but it's not edge-of-your-seat suspense. Yes, it is sensual at times (so much so that cuts were required to keep an NC-17 rating off the film), but it's certainly no glossy romance. (Generally, the film's love scenes generate a vague worry that perhaps the participants should have a bath or something first.)

But all combined, the movie is a fascinating -- if somewhat surreal and sometimes startling -- movie experience.

The Advocate (also known as The Hour of the Pig) stars Colin Firth as Richard Courtois, a Paris defense attorney who seeks a quieter life in the country. He and his diligent clerk, Mathieu (Jim Carter), settle in the quiet-seeming hamlet of Abbeville, but the town isn't as quiet as Courtois had hoped. Also, he learns to his frustration, the law allows animals to be accused and tried with the same rights and privileges as humans. Thus, shortly after freeing a man who bludgeoned his wife's lover to death and failing to save an accused witch, the conscientious Courtois finds himself called upon to defend the aforementioned pig.

Believe it or not, the major plot points of the film, set in 1452, are based on historical records, culled from court transcripts and diaries of the day. The opening scene, where a man and his she-ass stand accused of carnal acts, sets the tone as nooses are placed around both convicts' necks. A last-minute reprieve does arrive in time to save the ass, however -- the court has determined that she was a victim, not a willing participant, and therefore may go free with no stain upon her.

This movie isn't for everyone, and certainly the pace will seem a little slow for those raised on typical Hollywood comedy fare, but nonetheless it is worth tracking down for a curious 110 minutes of medieval intrigue and wit.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent acting in a Medieval "Who Dunnit".......2005-01-31

This story is based on a true incident that occurred in Medieval France. In those times, an animal could be tried, convicted, and executed for murder! A very large pig is the suspect, and Colin was wonderful as the lawyer defending the animal, There are also
dark undercurrents of unsolved murders which I found quite gripping and exciting. The viewer will have to get accustomed to the unusual costumes (wearing apparel) of that time. As usual, Colin Firth does a great job, he even became friendly with this monster pig!!!

Al Pacino is great in these movies and the movies are so masterfully acted out. I believe that Al Pacino is one the best actors alive along with Robert DeNiro and in "Heat" they show that there chemistry on the screen together is untouchable by any other duo. The Devil's Advocate is a great movie because it shows another side to Al Pacino's acting ability.

Judeau and the Hawks arrive just in time to rescue Caska from Chuder soldiers--and find Guts surrounded by the bodies of 100 mercenaries he killed. The impregnable Castle of Doldrey is the key to the century-long war between Midland and Chuder; Griffith and the Hawks gamble on a daring strategy to seize it. The animation of the battle is minimal, despite its significance, with held drawings substituting for action in many places. When Guts's trademark two-handed sword shatters in combat with the Chuder general, a demonlike creature throws him a new one. It departs, muttering ominously that "the time of the great eclipse draws near," obviously foreshadowing the next adventure Guts will pursue. He wants to leave Hawks, and the plot the Queen and court nobles have hatched against Griffith will give him the opportunity to move on. 4 out of 5 stars Dark Fantasy Part 4.......2006-01-11

Berserk is one of those series that continually get better and better as long as you can stick it out through the first few volumes. In volume one, a dark setting is introduced, as well as an anti-hero that takes delight in killing. In two, we explore the early years of this warrior named Guts, his rise through the Band of the Hawk, and his growing friendship with Griffith, the mysterious leader of the Hawks. In three, back story is revealed of two of the characters, and Guts proves that he may just be a little more than a blood-thirsty berserker.

But in volume four, it finally concludes the part of Guts past that ties him to the Band of the Hawk. I will not go into detail, however, of how this happens. Before that does happen, though, the final battle started in volume three continues here, and Guts fights the general of the opposing army, while Griffith meets a character from his past, one whose memory Griffith could do without. Also in this volume, the relationship between Guts and Caska deepens, and the two seem to genuinely enjoy each others' presence. Plus, Zodd, who makes his first appearance in volume two, and completely obliterated Guts and Griffith in singles combat, returns during one fateful moment.

This is easily the best volume of the first four, and I'm guessing that this series will only get better in volume five and six. The story progresses considerably in this volume, and definitely shouldn't be missed.

5 out of 5 stars This series just keeps getting better and better!.......2004-06-19

Berserk hasn't let me down yet and these set of episodes are a great. Gutts is thinking about leaving the Hawks!!! Yikes!
Also the violence has gotten a bit stronger lately.

Caska is getting mixed feelings towards the two and the Band of Hawk are soon to meet there fate. I don't want to spoil anything for the people who haven't seen these episodes But I will tell you that they are great. This is why I love this series. It has everything. Drama, Violence and lots of it, the story it self is great, though these are pretty much flash backs.

Still it is a must have for any fan that likes sword and sorcer with lots of violence and a really good story.

      I can't wait for DVD 5.

This series is getting better by the minute!

      Later...

5 out of 5 stars Be warned, after this one there is no going back.......2004-04-21

As this series progresses we dive deeper and deeper into the motivations, fears and inner demons of the main characters. The episodes in this disc show two opposing pictures. On one side the happiness and joy from the ascent of Griffith and the Band of Hawks as heroes of Midland due to their success in the challenges they have faced so far. On the other hand, the pain and despair Guts and Caska show because they do not see their path as clearly as before. The reasons behind this uncertainty are different. Guts is bothered by not having a personal goal, but just the one he borrowed from Griffith instead. Caska suffers because she has mixed loyalties between Guts and Griffith, something that had never happened before.

In the first episode of this installment we find Guts fighting by himself against one hundred men of the Chuder army trying to give Caska time to run away to safety. However, Caska has been reached by her pursuers and is facing a tough situation. The rest of the action has mostly to do with the decisive battle between Chuder and Midland. The White Knights, Midland's leading battalion has been defeated, and the only hope left is for the Band of Hawks to beat the Purple Rhino Knights in a battle for the control of Doldrey, a key fortification. The Hawks are facing their toughest challenge yet, fighting against a well-armed opponent, going against a fort that is impeccably placed in terms of war strategy. As an added attraction, the governor of Chuder in Doldrey is the man that had a relationship with Griffith a few years back.

I am very pleased with Berserk, not only because I like the storyline and the action, but also because the characters are completely mesmerizing. I thought it would be extremely hard, even almost impossible, to develop three-dimensional characters in the anime genre, but the creators of Berserk have succeeded. Finally, a warning for those of you who are getting one DVD at a time, the end of the last episode in this set will leave you biting your fingernails, so make sure that you will be able to keep going soon!

      5 out of 5 stars The Fate of a Leader's Ultimate Dream..........2004-01-16

"Berserk" has quickly become an addicting anime series for me. I find myself wanting to watch every single episode all at once, but do my best to wait and savor the series as much as I can without rushing through it. "Berserk 4: Devil's Advocate" is the continuing story of a tortured soul's past--a warrior who knows nothing but rage and anger.

These 4 episodes pick up where the last volume left off, with Guts and Caska being separated from their group, The Hawks. When they are victorious against the enemy, they return to their group; battered, but not beaten. The end result of their journey in the woods leads to Guts starting to doubt his purpose. He speaks of leaving The Hawks as soon as the final war is over--a war that will determine the fate of a kingdom and the fate of The Hawks. The war will also serve as either the beginning or the end of Griffith's dream.

There never seems to be a wasted moment in "Berserk," as every episode proves to be highly entertaining and involving. These four episodes are fully-loaded with action, thrills, and heart. It is a journey to witness Guts go through a change the way he does. He appears to have more feelings than ever before, but at the same time he is still as brutally violent in warfare as in the past. It is still unclear of how the relationship between Guts and Griffith will come to an end, but from seeing the very first episode in the series it is imminent that such an end will come.

Please be aware that this is no "cutesy" cartoon show on a Saturday morning for children. "Berserk" is a dark and violent saga that is intended for mature audiences. These four episodes contain strong and brutal violence, extreme blood and gore, language, and dark and disturbing themes and imagery. Extras included within this volume are production sketches, outtakes, trailers, and an audio interview with Kentaro Miura; the original creator.

"Berserk 4: Devil's Advocate" is an exciting and thrilling chapter in the "Berserk" saga. After seeing the very last episode on this disc, it's easy to tell that things are about to become much more darker and deadly. What will be the fate of Guts? Will Griffith be victorious in accomplishing his vision? Episodes 14-17 will give you an idea and give you a hint of the things to come. You've made it this far; now, there's no turning back.

5 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Dvd!.......2003-03-05

      Simply GREAT!
I think the story is getting thicker and the characters More complex! To tell someone Just coming in on this series, it is a Violent Action packed story of Guts and honor! With a GREAT storyline! It is based on a comic book and now has its own series, It isn't TOO violent Though for an Anime (think Braveheart) Most Violent Animes are TOO violent and get ridiculous, This story uses violence when needed, not to BE violent but to show it is a violent world. A MUST have! Buy this one along with the others!
