Keeping the Faith, Edward Norton's directorial debut, centers on Jake (Ben Stiller) and Brian (Norton), a rabbi and a priest who've been best friends since childhood. Both find their callings and grow into strong spiritual leaders for their community. The clever and occasionally slapstick comedy as Jake and Ben find their places in the religious community is precisely timed, and the film begins with a bang. Yet when childhood friend Anna (Jenna Elfman)--the perfect woman, a cross between "Jonny Quest and Tatum O'Neal"--finds them after all these years, both men fall for the stunning woman who is married to her career and her vibrating cell phone. But what starts as the making of a great joke (of course, the priest is sworn to celibacy and there's not much of a market for a rabbi married to a gentile) turns into a somewhat mawkish romance with mixed messages about the meaning of faith and the power of love. When Anna and Jake secretly begin a tryst, "just for fun," they of course fall in love, which is where the movie begins to unravel, as Anna is oblivious to the turmoil Jake might be feeling in having to choose between his faith and her. Jake turns into a total schmuck, Brian into a drunken idiot, and every secondary character becomes a clichéd stereotype, right down to the yentas in the synagogue and the kindly mentor (director Milos Forman) who guides Brian. However, despite the muck, Norton is surprisingly sympathetic and Elfman is an adorable heroine who helps bring some shining, fun moments to a mediocre film. --Jenny Brown
Description
Ben Stiller (THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS), Jenna Elfman (EdTV), and Edward Norton (FIGHT CLUB) star in KEEPING THE FAITH, a sexy romantic comedy so fresh and funny, you'll fall head over heels in love! Jake Schram (Stiller) and Brian Finn (Norton) are single, successful, extremely popular guys who have been best friends since, well, forever. They are about to be reunited with their other best childhood buddy -- the feisty, lanky tomboy, Anna (Elfman). Anna has grown into a high-powered workaholic beauty whose reentry into their lives turns this old circle of friends into a love triangle -- a very complicated one at that, because Jake's a rabbi and Brian is a priest. But have faith -- this gem is going to steal your heart.

Bubble Gum 4 the mind.......2007-02-16
My wife loves it. It is like bubble gum for the mind. Nothing deep, sort of a newer "When Harry Met Sally".
Sweet!.......2007-02-12
This is a beautiful, sensitive film that addresses issues both spritual and secular, and it manages to do it all with amazing humor! It's a movie you'll want to watch again and again and share with friends and family.
My Mom's favorite movie.......2007-01-12
"Keeping the Faith" is funny, poignant and shows quite clearly that no matter what your faith is, Guilt is universal and all mothers can lay it on you, whatever you believe. While the ending was predictable, it was still very much worth watching.
Funny but too long.......2006-07-20
Good acting, directing, lots of funny lines, good interfaith story, but a long sit.
Insulting..........2006-05-23
I know this is supposed to be a romantic comedy, so it is not supposed to be taken too seriously, but I feel that this movie's perspective of religion needs to be addressed...
Keeping the Faith is an insult to Catholicism and Judaism. It does not stop at making fun of the aforementioned religions and their respective traditions, but it also misrepresents their theological beliefs. The priest and rabbi give "sermons" that are wishy-washy and would never pass for a genuine sermon/message of the two respective faiths.
WARNING - PLOT SPOILER REVEALED: The rabbi eventually sleeps with the blonde. In reality, not only would a rabbi be in hot water for sleeping with any woman outside of marriage, but the fact that the woman is not Jewish adds insult to injury. This is because, as most any faithful Jew would tell you, Jewish tradition/culture pretty much requires that a Jew marries a Jew (even non-religious Jews tend to adhere to this mandate).
As for the Catholic priest, why should he be pursuing a woman if all Catholic priests are to remain celibate? Granted, celibacy can be difficult, but if this man was a true Catholic priest, I would be worried for this reason: If a celibate priest of a young age can struggle with feelings for a woman (much less get caught in a love triangle), how much worse will it become as he gets older and realizes he is not getting any younger?
If you are not religiously inclined, you may not care. If you are religious (especially if you're Catholic or a practicioner of Judaism), be forewarned. You may be greatly offended.

Odd pairing of movies.......2005-04-14
Keeping the Faith:
I have to admit I started watching this movie with a less than positive attitude. My previous encounters with Ben Stiller were either getting certain appendages stuck in zippers or having crocodilian's crispy heads removed geek style. I recognized Jenna Elfman from [Krippendorf's Tribe (1998) ASIN: 6304938748]. So I was ready for some wasted film.
After holding my breath and waiting for it to hit. I soon realized that this was a well put together movie with a good story plot and excellent execution. I was amazed at the people that were in this movie. Half the time I keep saying "oh look there is" Anne Bancroft, Eli Wallach, and many others.
Basic story of three childhood friends. One went away and the other two chose to become (now don't laugh) a priest and a rabbi. The one that went away (Anna Riley) returns as a business executive and has a magnetic personality with accoutrements to match.
The fun and the drama is when two and a half become more than friend. How will they and their world react to this? What makes the movie is not the story as much as how it is executed. And it seems that I need to re-evaluate Ben Stiller as he did a fine job with just the minimum of "spectacles, testicles, watch, wallet".
------------------------------------------------------------------
While You Were Sleeping:
This is one of those movies that can be watched over and again. First time you anticipate what is going to happen. Second time you see where they are setting you up. After a while you can imagine the seen from the sound. Back to the movie.
There is a nice story line and it is just in the believable. However it is the many small scenes that make you relay enjoy watching. When Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is confronted in Peter's apartment, Jack his brother is already suspicious of her. Peter's real girlfriend Ashley left her cat there. Lucy says she is just there to feed the cat, Jack smugly says that Peter has no cat. About that time what should come around the corner but the cat. Every time Jack thinks he has the upper hand, Lucy has a plausible explanation. I do not want to say too much, as it is fun to watch for the first time. However I think you will be able to relate the scene where the family is talking in the church.
horrible.......2003-02-24
bloody horrible. I'm terribly disappointed. dear lord, terrible.
Nice romantic comedies!.......2002-03-04
I usually hate these two-pack movies because the choices always seem to revolve around one movie that I love and one I don't really care for (i.e. Pretty Woman, Coyote Ugly). I always check though, because it's cheaper to buy 2 together. But in this case, I couldn't be happier the choices are great. Keeping The Faith is a very funny movie about a priest, a rabbi and their childhood "girl" friend. While You Were Sleeping is judged by many people as one of the best romantic comedies of the 90s and I have to admit that I agree, Sandra Bullock is a very good actress and she makes this movie what it's worth. So if you're looking for a great gift or just something to do on a Sunday afternoon, these two movie are a wonderful idea.
ENJOY;)
Faith, religion, tolerance.......2001-08-06
A nice and amusing story with a deep message. A beautiful friendship priest and a rabbi. They accept each other from their childhood. However they have a a third friend from the school: a nice blonde girl who returns to them. The big trio are together again. As adults the male-female correlation cannot be the same. Both fall in love to her that makes conflicts with their religions. A movie must to see. Teaches how to handle the conflicts and each other.

Are you kidding me?.......2007-02-03
This is the second time that I received a DVD that I already owned. Keeping The Faith and Steal This DVD are actually re-prints of the Kornography DVD. They were just given new artwork and a different name. As soon as I put both DVD's in, the words Kornography showed up on the screen.
If you already have Kornography, DO NOT BOTHER BUYING THIS OR STEAL THIS DVD. THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT!!
