Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Charming & heartwarming portrait of Beatrix Potter.......2007-06-21

Miss Potter is one of those rare movies that not only captures one's imagination, but tugs at the heartstrings as well. The movie explores the story of beloved children's author/illustrator, Beatrix Potter [Renee Zellweger] who finds her parents' lifestyle and social ambitions cloying and snobbish. She writes & illustrates stories for children as a way of escaping this rigid life. However, her efforts at getting published and taken seriously as an author face several stumbling blocks [this is after all England in the early 1900s] until she meets Norman Warner[ Ewan Mc Gregor] and together they make history with the publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Their romance is portrayed in such an understated manner yet effective in showing their genuine love and affection for one another. This movie reminded me of Finding Neverland [with Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie] but not as dark and much more uplifting. Renee Zellweger is enchanting in her role as Miss Potter[except for the awful British accent], and Ewan McGregor is convincing in his role as her love interest.Emily Watson shines in her role as Norman's sister who develops a genuine friendship with Potter. The cinematography deserves special mention - the lush depictions of the English countryside, the Lake Country is beautiful. All in all, it is an inspiring tale of perseverance, love, loss, & convictions that is sure to uplift one's spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful feel good tale of children's author, Beatrix Potter.......2007-06-20

This wonderful movie is based on the life of Beatrix Potter, children's author and artist of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" amongst others. Spectacular acting and feel good story make for a highly recommendable cinematic experience. A must see!

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet Diversion.......2007-06-20

MISS POTTER is a film that is beautiful to watch, is heartwarming, and shows how a minimal story line can give an inside picture of the life of a famous person without superimposing the brouhaha that Hollywood usually frosts biographies.

England 1902 is the time we meet Beatrix Potter (Renée Zellweger), a spinster in her late twenties whose life is centered on her 'friends' - the little animal figures who grace her stories, friends like Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle Duck, Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten, Hunca Munca etc - as she attempts to have her illustrated children's stories published. Her overbearing mother (Barbara Flynn) disapproves of Beatrix' preoccupation with matters other than proper marriage and her father (Bill Patterson) supports her art but knows his daughter is not a 'fine artist'. Yet on a fluke Beatrix wins over the publishing firm of the Warne Brothers: offering to publish her books is more to appease the youngest brother Norman (Ewan McGregor) who pleads for a project that will make him part of the family business than to lend credibility to Potter's output. Potter and Norman Warne connect over the simple beauty of the books and with Norman's sister Millie (Emily Watson) the three find success in a difficult industry - one especially onerous for female authors.

The story of Norman and Beatrix's developing love, appalling to her parents, includes a period of parental imposed separation as Beatrix moves to the Lake Country to write and paint and continue her growing passion for Norman in delicate letters. Norman succumbs to an illness and his death devastates Beatrix and Millie. Beatrix manages to temper her mourning with a newfound passion in the Lake Country, and with the help of her old friend William Heelis (Lloyd Owen), she purchases her Lake Country home and as one of the first 'environmentalists' she buys the surrounding farms to prevent their destruction by corporate industrial greed. Beatrix Potter has become a wealthy woman through her own triumph as a writer and illustrator of children's books and finds restored happiness in securing the fairytale countryside where her 'friends' continue to help her weave tales that remain to this time some of the world's finest stories.

The visuals of this film, from the opening sequences of watercolor preparation to the enchanting vistas of the Lake Country, are stunningly beautiful. The script by Richard Maltby, Jr. remains rather superficial, but director Chris Noonan makes the best of a thin storyline to create a warmly human view of Potter. Renée Zellweger as Beatrix inhabits the roles in all but her flawed British accent, a factor that unfortunately stretches credibility in the presence of the rest of the professional cast. But she captures Potter's determination and vulnerability and in the end she wins our hearts. This is a fine little film that pays homage to a great lady of the literary arts: it is as unfettered and simple as the durable classics Potter left as her legacy. Grady Harp, June 07

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2007-06-20

Miss Beatrix Potter (Renee Zellweger) has just about given up hope that she will ever get her story published. But she is surprised with the Warner Brothers decided to give her children's story and water color illustrations a chance. What she doesn't know is that they don't hold out much hope for it. They just think it is a good project to keep youngest brother Norman (Ewan McGregor) busy.

Miss Potter has her own vision for the book and is surprised to find that Mr. Warner shares her vision. The two work closely together on developing the perfect book.

Beatrix had planned to just write one, but at the encouragement of Norman, she begins working on more. And as the books begin to sell, the two become closer.

None of this sits well with Beatrix's parents (Bill Paterson and Barbara Flynn). Mrs. Potter especially thinks that their daughter should have married into a suitable match ages ago. And suitable can only mean someone with old money. But her parent's objections to her new found fame and relationship are about to be the least of her worries. Can she survive what is to come?

The movie focuses on the beginnings of Beatrix's writing career and her relationship with Norman. Near the beginning we are treated to a few flashbacks to her childhood, but just enough to show how she came to be the woman she was. And, while some details have been changed for dramatic purposes, the main details are true.

All the performances are good and draw you into the story. Parts of the film take place in the English Lake District, and the locations used show just how beautiful that area is.

The ads for the movie showed Beatrix's drawings coming to life. Over the course of the movie, this happens a few times. These scenes never overwhelm the film but add to the current mood.

My only complaint is the movie feels like it moves too quickly. I often wished it would slow down a little and explore the relationships more, especially the friendship between Beatrix and Norman's sister.

The movie was released by fits and starts around the country, making it easy to miss this gem. But if you did, now that it's out on DVD, be sure to catch it.

3 out of 5 stars Miss Potter Review from MoviePulse.net.......2007-06-20

Reunited for the first time since the stylishly acclaimed romantic comedy `Down with Love', stars Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor again light up the screen, except this time they are devoid of the slick, candy coated perfection that made their last outing so spectacularly delicious. However, in the story chronicling the mushy love life of Beatrix Potter, the acclaimed author of whimsical children's stories like "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", the duo get to continue their onscreen chemistry in a new way, as bumbling and awkward early twentieth century lovers.

In Hollywood it is rare and refreshing to find a director who makes films because he is captivated by the story, but for Chris Noonan, who helmed this lush and lavish period piece, `Miss Potter' marks his first feature film since the phenomenally successful 1995 movie `Babe'. While there are a few nods to swine sprinkled throughout `Miss Potter', Noonan's new film focuses on human nuances more so than talking animals.

With beautiful performances comprised from the film's stars, `Miss Potter' is an intriguing examination of an important literary figure which is designed for the whole family to enjoy. On the surface an unmarried, thirty-something daughter of a British aristocrat who spends her days not only painting small farm animals, but talking to her work as if they were living and breathing individuals, might serve as a beautiful case study for schizophrenia; however Zellweger's strong performance as Beatrix Potter makes the nuanced character come to life in charming and delightful ways.

Of course half the fun of her character comes from her rebellious love for the tradesmen Norman Warne (McGregor), who just happens to be her publisher too. In a film that is filled with lavish, golden cinematography, doing justice to Potter's own watercolor illustrations, it is the moment when these two lovers culminate their relationship with an iconic kiss on the fog filled London train tracks that `Miss Potter' completely enraptures you.

The epic challenge for Potter, even more difficult than getting her "Bunny Book" published, was winning her aristocratic parents over with the idea of marriage to Norman Warne. With a Shakespearean refusal to budge, Potter's parents force the author to seek out other ways for her to marry her true love. When she decides she might have the income to move out on her own Potter humbly asks her banker if she has enough money for a small home, to which he replies that not only could she afford a house, but several estates as well.

As fun and family friendly as a great deal of the first act may seem, `Miss Potter' does have its darker moments which is sure to catch audiences looking for the next `Finding Neverland' off guard. When an important figure in Potter's life passes away due to illness, suddenly her entire future is in flux, a plot point which is sure to confuse younger audiences. While death may be an important subject for children to comprehend, it may be a subject that parents of young Peter Rabbit fans might not be ready to broach just yet.

For their latest pairing on the big screen Zellweger and McGregor deliver another magical, yet decidedly different romance that is sure to delight audiences of all ages. For his first film since `Babe', director Noonan doesn't seem to be rusty at all when it comes to telling a story on film, and with a little luck we will hopefully get more cinematic fair from him. In the case of his second picture in over a decade I can only sum up the film with this statement: That'll do Potter, that'll do.

First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool!.......2007-06-13

I liked this movie a lot. I watched it in class. It was good, other than the violence. Dobi was pretty funny. He was the alien creature that appeared in Harry's room. I watched this in class, too. It was funny when there was a shadowy girl floating in the bathroom! It was a fun movie.

NOTE: Rated PG. Parental Guidance Suggested--Some Material may not be suitable for Children.

Rated PG for scary images, mild creature violence and some brief mild language. May not be appropriate for young children under age 8.

I liked the first one better, probably because everything was new. But this one is really good too. You need to read the book though, that's why I'm really posting this, to tell people to read the book. It has so much more.

It's Harry Potter... I mean let's not mince words. Chris Columbus directed, so it ain't the best adaptation it could be, but for what it is it ain't bad.

Paul Newman shines as cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson in Robert Rossen's atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel. Newman's Felson is a swaggering pool shark punk who takes on the king of the poolroom, Minnesota Fats (a cool, assured Jackie Gleason in his most understated performance). After losing big and crashing into a void of self-pity, Eddie meets down-and-out Sarah (Piper Laurie in a delicate performance), an alcoholic blue blood who's dropped into Eddie's world of dingy bars and seedy poolrooms. Eddie regains his confidence and attracts the attention of a shifty, calculating promoter, Bert Gordon (George C. Scott at his most heartless), who offers to bring Eddie into the big money--but at what cost? Rossen brings his film to life with the easy pace of a pool game, giving his actors room to explore their characters and develop into a razor-sharp ensemble. Eugen Schüfftan earned an Academy Award for his shadowing black-and-white cinematography, as did art directors Harry Horner and Gene Callahan for their deceivingly simple set designs. Even in the daylight this film seems to be smothered by night, lit by the dim glow of a bar lamp or the overhead glare of a pool-table light, an appropriate environment for this tale of one man's struggle with his soul and his self-esteem. Newman returned as an older, wiser, cagier Felson 25 years later in Martin Scorsese's Color of Money. --Sean Axmaker

    Description

Paul Newman heads a superb cast featuring Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie in the riveting film that received an Academy Award(r) nomination as Best Picture of 1961 and brought all four of its Oscar(r) nomination. Newman (Best Actor nominee) is electrifying as Fast Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral hustler who haunts backstreet pool rooms fleecing anyone who'll pick up a cue. Determined to be acclaimed as the best, Eddie seeks out the legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason, Supporting Actor nominee), who's backed by Bert Gordon (Scott, Supporting Actor nominee), a predatory gambler. Eddie can beat the champ, but virtually defeats himself with his low self-image. The love of a lonely woman (Laurie, Best Actress nominee) could turn Eddie's life around, but he won't rest until he beats Minnesota Fats, no matter what price he must pay. Voted one of the year's ten best by "The New York Times" and "Time," and distinguished by 2 Academy Awards- Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration (B&W), The Hustler is a dazzling cinematic triumph.

Kenneth Branagh's 1993 production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a vigorous and imaginative work, cheerful and accessible for everyone. Largely the story of Benedick (Branagh) and Beatrice (Emma Thompson)--adversaries who come to believe each is trying to woo the other--the film veers from arched wit to ironic romps, and the two leads don't mind looking a little silly at times. But the plot is also layered with darker matters that concern the ease with which men and women fall into mutual distrust. Branagh has rounded up a mixed cast of stage vets and Hollywood stars, among the latter Denzel Washington and Michael Keaton, the latter playing a rather seedy, Beetlejuice-like version of Dogberry, king of malapropisms. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks or subtitles.--Tom Keogh

This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. It's effective to a point, but vaguely hollow at its core. --Jeff Shannon

        Description

From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper.

OK, let's get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colorful (if crude) animation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It's rife with scatological humor, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness, and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada," blaming their neighbors to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world.

To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful antiprofanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMMKay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There," Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables. And in advocating free speech and satirizing well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups (with a special nod to the MPAA), Bigger, Longer & Uncut hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can't repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip's hit song, but you'll be rolling on the floor. Don't worry, though--to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won't warp your fragile little mind. Unless you have something against the First Amendment. --Mark Englehart

If you have an appetite for Sicilian soapers, then you're like all those other people who made Mario Puzo's The Last Don the highest Nielsen-rated show for the week in mid-May 1997 when it originally aired. And who could blame you, since the story line of this TV miniseries is chock-full of all the familiar elements that make up a bestseller--power, money, sex, murder, gambling, madness, fame, Hollywood, loyalties made and broken. The story proper begins with a little Romeo and Juliet when Rose Marie, daughter of Don Domenico Clericuzio (Danny Aiello), falls for the youngest son of the warring Santadio family. On their wedding night, Rose Marie's new husband and the entire Santadio family are slaughtered by the Clericuzios to avoid further conflict between the two families, and Rose Marie goes completely insane and grows up to be Kirstie Alley. But not before she gives birth to another Santadio, Dante (so named because he has to live in Hell), in whom she invests all her hatred for her own family. So he grows up to be a psychotic hitman, played with sly and sadistic ingenuity by Rory Cochrane. The Clericuzios' chief executioner, Pippi (played with smooth aplomb by Joe Mantegna), is responsible for killing Rose Marie's husband, and wants his own son, metaphorically overburdened with the name "Cross," to follow in his footsteps. The sins of the fathers are visiting all over the sons in this picture, and naturally the two kids will have to resolve this inheritance. The acting is the main attraction here. Aiello in particular invests The Don with a stately grace that is just right. --Jim Gay

Gene Wilder takes his most unusual role, a naive 19th-century rabbi sent from his native Poland to the fledgling Jewish community in San Francisco, in this warm-hearted comic adventure. The trusting soul is easy prey for the con men and criminals who prey on the immigrants arriving in the Philadelphia port and the rabbi, beaten but unbowed, continues his trek West solo: broke, underequipped, and hopelessly lost. Harrison Ford, fresh from Star Wars, is the roguish outlaw who adopts the determined traveler and the two become unlikely friends as they make their way through one scrape after another. Wilder makes a sincere and sympathetic hero, his faith and courage seeing him through one crisis after another, and fresh-faced Ford makes an endearing scamp of a bank robber. The meandering adventure, overlong at two hours, takes its time as the duo traverses the gorgeous American countryside and end up in the bustling Barbary Coast San Francisco of the Gold Rush era. Legendary hard-edged action director Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly, The Dirty Dozen) brings a gentle touch and easygoing humor to this family-oriented adventure, but old habits die hard. While staying within PG parameters, Aldrich adds a little grit to the Old West fistfights and gunfights. --Sean Axmaker

                Description

It's 1850 and new rabbi Avram Belinski sets out from Philadelphia toward San Francisco. Cowpoke bandit Tom Lillard hasn't seen a rabbi before. But he knows when one needs a heap of help. And getting this tenderfoot to Frisco in one piece will cause a heap of trouble - with the law, Native Americans and a bunch of killers. Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford are one feisty team as rabbi and rescuer in this rough-'n'-ready romp that rivals Wilder's earlier Blazing Saddles in Wild West hilarity. Five years after Captain Blood made him a swashbuckling star, Errol Flynn returned to the high seas as privateer Captain Thorpe in The Sea Hawk. Flynn plays the dashing gentleman pirate as dedicated patriot, looting Spanish ships for English coffers with the private blessing of Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson, reprising the role from Fire over England). The film opens with a rousing sea battle: broadside cannon fire sends masts falling and splinters a-flying before Flynn's men take their Spanish quarry in a furious shipboard cutlass battle. The fearless fighter becomes a stumbling schoolboy when he falls for the Spanish ambassador's niece, but he's back in his element when he sails to the New World for treasure and lands in the middle of a deadly conspiracy. Big-eyed beauty Brenda Marshall stands in for Flynn's usual love interest Olivia de Havilland, and the film misses the latter's sass and spirit, but it's a minor shortcoming. Claude Rains plays his usual smoothly conniving villain, and hearty Alan Hale returns as Flynn's loyal sidekick. Michael Curtiz proves once again why he was Warner Brothers' top director with a handsome, action-packed film that mixes intrigue and suspense with grand set pieces, concluding with a rousing series of escapes, chases, and a runaway sword fight. Classic Hollywood swashbuckling at its best. --Sean Axmaker
