Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Carrey plays a shy, Jerry Lewis-like nerd who discovers an ancient mask that magically transforms him into a green-faced, zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character with no inhibitions. As Roger Ebert said of Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor performs "as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calorie expended." If that's your kind of humor, you'll love The Mask; if not, you may need a valium or two to sit through this one. Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

The first disc is filled out by the theatrical trailer and a Jimmy Fallon-starring Batman Begins spoof from the MTV Movie Awards. The second disc consists of eight featurettes (about 105 minutes total) on a variety of topics. "The Journey Begins" covers the early stages of the movie, including the casting and how director/co-writer Christopher Nolan brought in co-writer David S. Goyer for his comic-book expertise. "Shaping Mind and Body" covers Christian Bale's fight training, and other featurettes discuss the sets (the Batcave is shown being constructed out of wood and sheets), the Batman costume, the Batmobile, the monorail sequence, and the hazards of filming in Iceland. All the behind-the-scenes featurettes are solid but somewhat routine, and while "The Journey Begins" is the widest overview, there's not really any centerpiece documentary (all are 8 to 15 minutes, and there's no Play All option). Interviewees tend to be the same throughout: Nolan, Goyer, Bale (the only cast member to get much face time), and other crew members (it's nice to hear from the stunt people).

Potentially more interesting to fans is "Genesis of the Bat," which covers the comic books that influenced the film, including The Long Halloween, Neal Adams's Ra's Al Ghul from the '70s, Dennis O'Neill and Dick Giordano's The Man Who Falls, and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Interviewees include DC Comics editor Paul Levitz and artist Jim Lee, but the latter's involvement eventually degrades the featurette into a pitch for DC's All-Star Batman line. A nice bonus to the Deluxe Edition is a mini comic book (DVD case-sized) that has Batman's first appearance (Detective Comics #27), The Man Who Falls, and a 48-page excerpt from The Long Halloween. (Once you get a taste of Halloween, you'll want to pick up the full-length, full-size version.) Filling out the disc are overviews of four gadgets and eight characters, DVD-ROM features, and a variety of poster-art concepts. To get to the features menu, you have to scroll through a multi-page Goyer-scribed comic book, which is a good read, but you can't skip it the next time you want to watch the second disc. Note that the comic book is also viewable in French, and the second disc offers a French menu and French (but not English) subtitles for the featurettes. --David Horiuchi

This movie did a great job at illustrating the origin of Batman, and portraying him as the Dark Knight.

The movie did a great job of overcoming the campiness of some of the earlier Batman movies.

Excellent movie depicting how batman became batman. Excellent storyline, you're always thinking what's going to happen next. Great acting. This movie should definitely accelerate Christain Bales career. Good action sequences!

Apparently, the only path to wisdom and a life packed with acts of kindness is arse freezing and sword and/or kickboxing tricks.
Ridiculous movie designed for brainless pimpled teenagers.
Nauseating philosophy wrapping grandiloquent dialogues.

At least the Rambo suite was honest entertainment.

Perfect Batman origin.......2007-06-20

I was a little underwhelmed by the special features (there should be more for a product this huge... see the most recent release of Batman (Two-Disc Special Edition) which features documentary on the span of years from producers' desire to make a new Batman to the pandemonium following its release), but as far as the FILM itself goes, without a doubt it is a 5-star story. I put this in the same category as Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) as the two best movies I've seen in five years--interestingly they are both "reboots."

Unfortunately, I did not like this film as much as some of the other reviewers. The story was ok, but I think Scarecrow (and some of the special effects used around the charatcer and Batman) really kept it from tanking because Katie Holmes was just plain corney. I really think they could have used a better actress (a la Charlize Theron). The HD DVD picture quality of course is there and the In Movie Experience is what helped make this one of the highset selling HD DVDs ever. Its a good film but not perfect. Still this is an essential HD DVD purchase if you can overlook some of the film's shortcomings.

"Behind The Mask(The Rise Of Leslie Vernon)" is by far one of the most creative horror/comedies ever thought up. Even better...it was executed beautifully! Producer/Director and co-writer Scott Glosserman has delivered a wickedly clever treat for us true horror fans. To the naked eye maybe not, but any self-respecting horror fan can clearly see that there are more layers to this flick than there are on an onion. The hints,suprises and inside jokes are a plenty throughout and the idea of starting from behind the mask when getting to know a future horror icon is nothing short of brilliant! The scares and laughs are perfectly balanced and the acting is quite good from most if not all parties especially Nathan Baesel as(Leslie Vernon) this guy down-right steals the show from the start. The end of the end is excellent and just leaves me wanting more from this psycho killer behind the mask(in a great way).

thought it was VERY funny at times and loved the whole

For the true horror fan.......2007-07-02

This movie gets horrible reviews by people who do not appreciate horror movies. I grew up with the slashers (Halloween, Friday the 13th, TCM). Knowing that, it's cool to see a movie where those guys were real, and it's an important key to society to have a killer. How they shoot the movie was beyond great. The film holds true to the comedy/mockumentary that it tries to reach, but also sticks true to horror, given there are a few scenes that are jumpy. The mask is creepy, too! Watch this is you appreciate everything the 80s spewed out at us.

I love my horror movies. Straight to the point stalker/slasher/murderer/hauntings, etc., but this documentory type horror movie was totally boring. I think the plot of the story was stupid and then unfolding the movie was even worse. Don't waste your time buying this one.

Some places have called this film 'Scream meets The Blar Witch meets Best In Show'. A better description there could never be. This hybrid mix of spoof/drama/horror/ that splits between documentary style tape and slasher film is all over the place. Amazingly, it never loses itself. The acclaim and good word of mouth is most appropriate. BTM delves deeper in the horror cliches than "Scream". The movie follows a documentary film crew led by Taylor Gentry(Angela Goethals) as they film a nice, young guy named Leslie Vernon. Leslie is not normal. The film takes place in a world where all of the shenanigans Jason, Freddy, and Michael pulled at Camp Crystal Lake, Springwood, and Haddonfield all really happened. Leslie wants to be a part of it and to be the next great serial killer. He lets this film crew film his every move and shows them just how he is going to pull it all off. We see Leslie take the crew thru every imaginable horror film cliche step by step. It's amazing how well thought out the script is, and how the writer seemed to get every cliche in there. The movie, by Scott Glosserman, is undeniably clever, inventive, and darkly twisted. Jokes and gags are strewn throughout, and they all work. I was never disappointed with any of it. You will get a fair share of laughs with your screams. Like 'Scream', the comic aspects are funny and spoof-like, but when the horror and terror sets in, it's all real. It turns deadly serious, and this is when the movie turns to actual film. The movie may be funny and comical, but it also takes the horror aspect of it seriously. By then, no one is laughing. Robert Englund is along for the ride as Dr. Halloran, who is basically the 'Loomis' to Leslie's 'Michael'. Having him in a film that mentions Freddy and his exploits as real is another hoot. Horror fave Zelda Rubinstein also has a small part as a librarian. Besides showing the filming sites for the already mentioned horror classics, there are other nods if you look closely, as when Taylor is standing next to a sign familiar with Haddonfieldians and girls all in white jumping rope, ala 'Elm Street'. The performances are great. Nathaniel is a real find. Funny, charming, and with a real presence. He gives a knockout performance as Leslie. Angela Goethals turns from Diane Sawyer in the beginning to horror movie heroine by the end. Scott Wilson is another plus as a retired serial killer named Eugene, who provides some of the best moments in the film. Horror fans will be pleased with the blood(it's there, but not a whole lot of it), as with the gratuitous nudity scene and sex scene that also seems to go along with the type. With it's sly, knowing script, sharp comedy, real horror, great direction, and electric performances, Behind The Mask is a film that delivers it all in spades. One of the better films of it's kind I have seen in many a moon.

This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in Nacho Libre he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, Nacho Libre just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. --Daniel Vancini

This movie is hilarious, from beginning to end. It's so much fun to watch I had to get it for my Husband for Father's Day. He loved it. Makes us laugh just thinking about it. This is a must own.

GOSH DARN FRIGGIN' FUNNY!.......2007-06-13

This movie made me laugh my butt off, I even laughed so hard in the CORN-THROWING part, friggin' heck'a funny! Anyway, the picture is good but not at its best. More like 6 or 7 out of 10. But I can see more detail than on DVD that I didn't noice it in first place until I watched the HD-DVD version on my Optoma HD70 projector on 25 ft widescreen, yep! on XBOX 360 add-on HD-DVD drive. And the sound... sound pretty good, I enjoyed some funny music and singing is kinda a goofball in a good way! Good movie for family, I got this HD-DVD brand new for [...]vand its was friggin' worth it!

Admittedly I did not voluntarily watch this film. Instead I was forced by my brother-in-law who swore it would be funny. Even after the first viewing I was only mildly entertained. I have no idea how I ended up watching the film again, undoubtedly by my sneaky brother-in-law, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the film I had previously not cared for. Slowly but surly I have watched the film several times over, always accompanied by my husband who absolutely loved the film. In fact, it is large part due to his constant mimicking of the film that I probably now find so much humor in it. How very Monty Python of him!

What can I say? I have looked through the other reviews and can hardly disagree with the consensus. Therefore I will unnecessarily write yet another review that will simply repeat everything that's already been said.

Yes, what a slog. Though a fan of Jack Black, I was both shocked and saddened to see him in this tedious tripe.

I suppose the script's premise must have seemed a lot more hilarious on paper than it turned out to be once they hitched Black up in those turquoise tights.

There are very few laughs. I think in large part this is because Black is harnessed: forced to deliver all his lines through his clenched and rigid Mexican accent.

But whatever your theory is, you gotta agree: there are very few laughs.

DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. I've enjoyed this movie several times and know that it is a family hit. It shows the contrast of good and bad decisions and how they can effect an entire kingdom. The honor and loyalty of the royal guard to the people in conflict to their responsibility to their king.

I thought the acting was very good and convincing as well as the scenery and the storyline was good. It had my interest and I was left satisfied with no real unanswered questions at the end.

I would recommend watching this movie, and even adding it to your library.

"One For All, and All For One!".......2007-04-25

This is a magnificent movie and would be a great addition to anyones' collection. The actors do an amazing job portraying the musketeers in this version of the Man in the Iron Mask. The sounds and scenery add to the wonderful ambiance created in this film. I have owned it since it came out and still enjoy watching it every time. It has one of the greatest endings of any movie I have seen, every director should strive to have an ending like this.

I guess all I can say is, if you don't at least see this movie you're missing out.

bad acting, bad script, terrible movie.......2007-04-18

This is an unsophisticated, badly written, terribly acted movie that just doesn't work. I can't imagine what the reviewers who like it were thinking. DiCaprio is ghastly. None of the actors can read any of the lines convincingly. The damsel in distress has the most childish, silly voice.... Awful movie.

After a cursory scrolling through the previous 190 reviews on this film I've come to the conclusion that the '98 release, `The Man in the Iron Mask' is one of those movies you either love or hate. As for me, I love it!

The scenery is exquisite, the soundtrack inspirational and uplifting, the storyline epic and filled with pathos and the cast is amazing. Gerard Depardeieu (Porthos), John Malkovich (Athos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Bryne (D'Artagnan) breathe new life into Dumas' musketeers mythos. Seeing these four legendary warriors gallantly charge King Louie's muskets as they fire from point blank range was as heroic a scene as I've ever seen captured on film. It gives me goose bumps just to think about it.

As for Leonardo DiCaprio, he is magnificent in the dual role of King Louis XIV of France and his twin brother Philippe. His ability to appear so arrogant, hateful and despicable as King Louie one minute and transform himself into the timid, emotional and caring Philippe a moment later is truly amazing. This is by far my favorite DiCaprio performance.

This is a film that can be watched over and over again without losing its emotional impact on the viewer. 'The Man in the Iron Mask' is a keeper, I wholeheartedly recommend that you add it to your personal DVD library.

"The Mask of Zorro" is a rare case of an action movie that doesn't break any boundaries, yet doesn't seem formulaic. Zorro is the legendary fictional hero who protects the people against tyrannical villains, usually clownish Mexican soldiers and greedy bureaucrats.

As most are aware, the story begins when Diego De La Vega, aka Zorro, (Anthony Hopkins) does one last good deed for the locals by bringing the greedy Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) to justice. But Montero finds Zorro's secret lair and exacts heart-braking vengeance upon him, Diego's daughter is stolen and is imprisoned for twenty years. Later, the daughter grows into the beautiful Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who knows nothing of her true past.

The other arc that intertwines is that of Alejandro Murietta (Antonio Banderas), who also loses everything when confronted by one of Montero's goons, the ruthless Captain Love (Matt Letscher). Alejandro and Diego, now escaped from prison, team up to bring both men to justice, and do so with the presence of a hero long-absent, but never forgotten---Zorro!

The acting in this movie is perfect for an action/adventure, because the actors bring more to the screen than the script probably suggested. Banderas brings so many layers to the character of Alejandro: first a clownish thug, then a man who can only quench his thirst for vengeance by becoming a charming noble. Hopkins, as always, has a believeable screen presence, and always helps us see what a tortured soul he really is, yet manages to keep his patient resolve. And Catherine Zeta Jones in her pre-Oscar role is more than a damsel in distress. In fact, Elena Montero is never a damsel at all. She's a sexy, feisty woman who never loses courage in the face of turmoil. She's really an exceptional heroine. Martin Campbell (the director) never allows his female characters to be useless pawns (see "Golden-Eye"), and this is no exception.

The villains, however, are also better than expected. Stuart Wilson worked with director Martin Campbell in "No Escape" as a cannibalistic gang-leader, who frankly sent chills down my spine everytime I saw him. Here, his character of Montero isn't necessarily evil, but has no problem taking extreme measures to satisfy his own greed. The underrated success of this film, in my opinion, is the performance of Matt Letscher as Captain Love. Love is a sadistic soldier whose viciousness is matched by his exceptional swordsman skills. Every scene when Banderas and Letscher are together is simply amazing, because so much has been established that we can barely stand the tension between them. The obligatory moment where Love and Alejandro (as the new Zorro) finally staredown for a final fight is simply breathtaking, because so much anger and determination has climaxed to this one moment! It's really an impressive moment---so simple, but so heart-pounding.

But beyond the acting is also a high-quality production. The sets and costuming are authentic (no "Wild Wild West" anachronisms here), the music by James Horner is one his best score's to date, the sound effects are crisp and sharp, the photography is gorgeous as it captivates the beauty of the red sunsets, and the action sequences are awesome! The swordfights are well-choreographed, and never use digital effects to "enhance" the action. There is a neat horse chase, and the final sequence in a Mexican mine is intense and breath-taking!

"The Mask of Zorro" is what action/adventure should be. Funny, sexy, fast-paced, well-acted, and exciting all amidst a top-notch production! Trust me on this, this movie is NEVER boring! Because the DVD doesn't cost much, and is packed with excellent Extras...you can't go wrong.

The Mask of Zorro brings to the screen the story of who else, but the well-known Mexican hero.
The setting is California in the transitional period following Spain's withdrawal from Mexico and Zorro, due to old age, can no longer defend the people against oppression and injustice. Subsequently, he needs to find someone to replace him or else the legend of Zorro will die with him...
The film combines romance, drama, and adventure in such a way that it spells success.
Moreover, the fascinating culture and traditions of pre-union California as well as the historical time period in question are presented very well in the film.
Needless to say, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100%! Their great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
Very well written and very well presented, it is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely put you in a good mood!

If you've seen Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, then you know the entire plot of Scary Movie. That's okay, though, because this is a parody, and it helps to know the story in order to be able to get the jokes. No, the biggest surprise here is not the story as much as the amount of full-frontal male nudity. Really, in addition to all the dick jokes (and the ass jokes and fart jokes), there's a couple of shots of the male member, one of which is erect and used as a weapon. Scary Movie somehow ended up with an R rating, which in a sense is groundbreaking; perhaps our ratings board is loosening up after all.

But is it funny? That's the most important question, and the answer to that is yes. In the vein of Airplane!, with a dash of the Farrelly brothers, Scary Movie keeps throwing jokes at you one after another. The law of averages says some of them have to hit, and enough of them do to keep the movie entertaining. Unlike the makers of Airplane!, however, the Wayans brothers aren't making this movie out of a love of the genre, and unlike the Farrelly brothers, they don't make fun of retarded people with any sort of respect, so the humor throughout feels a lot uglier. Still, there are enough funny scenes in Scary Movie to make the viewing experience worthwhile. Special credit must go to Lochlyn Munro as Greg, the over-the-top jock, who steals the movie up until the time he's gotta die.--Andy Spletzer

I erased my initial 3-star review because it wasn't totally fair. I watched this a second and third time, and I tell you, I'm almost ready to give this 5 stars, but I won't. The first time, I couldn't fully appreciate the crass humor, but I realize that it is a classic. But it's still a classic I'm unwilling to give 5 stars.

Along with the Wayans' brand of comedy, comes an unshakeable annoyance at some of their jokes because of their juvenility. Unlike White Chicks, the Wayans show no restraint with their toilet and sexual humor in Scary Movie. Why does every joke have to revolve around sex? Are the Wayans Brothers that sexually obsessed? All in all, it's a funny picture if you can abandon your decent sensibilities for a little while and just have fun. That's what I did, and I'll not hesitate to watch it again and again. Scary Movie is also the funniest in the 4 part series.

All in all I found this film pretty funny but not as funny as Scary Movie 2. There was nothing wrong with it, I had no complaints but fans of the slasher flicks 'Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" will appreciate this film for the potential it holds. However I am not a fan of those movies so this doesn't hold as many thrills for me. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a good laugh. Regina Hall and Anna Faris definetly have a big future in the world of comedy as this movie will show. Plus the Wayans brothers add so much to this movie. However I'd warn against eating or drinking while watching this movie unless the viewer doesn't mind spewing said itens out their nose!

Scary Movie is an instant movie classic.Director Keenan Ivory Wayans outdies himself in a spoof of horror films involving an innocent teenager named Cindy Campbell who's being stalked by a goofy killer in a cheap rendition of Scream.Though funny to watch,Scary Movie also has it's share of gross-out gags and laughs.The way Wayans slanders horror films is so funny that you can't help but laugh out loud.

Cowritten by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. Potentially more interesting to fans is "Genesis of the Bat," which covers the comic books that influenced the film, including The Long Halloween, Neal Adams's Ra's Al Ghul from the '70s, Dennis O'Neill and Dick Giordano's The Man Who Falls, and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Interviewees include DC Comics editor Paul Levitz and artist Jim Lee, but the latter's involvement eventually degrades the featurette into a pitch for DC's All-Star Batman line. Filling out the disc are overviews of four gadgets and eight characters, DVD-ROM features, and a variety of poster-art concepts. To get to the features menu, you have to scroll through a multipage Goyer-scribed comic book, which is a good read, but you can't skip it the next time you want to watch the second disc. Definitely spend the extra bucks for the 2 disc set This set comes with a really cool bonus disc and a great digest sized comic compiled with some of the great comic book stories that inspired the writers on the film. The bonus features are great, but I'd have liked some of them to be a bit longer--such as the history of Batman featurette. Great documentary on the pre-production and stunts as well as the fight choreography. Unfortunately the only cast member they interview in any depth is Christian Bale (such a shame considering the enormously talented cast this film has) and NO director's commentary or any commentary for that matter. Personally I'd have loved a commentary with the cast and writers.

As for the film: this is most certainly a film about Batman. Who he is, how he came to be, and why he believes what he believes. Basically this film is blissfully nothing like the last two Batman films starring Val Kilmer & George Clooney in the title roles. I loved how the relationship between Gordon & Batman grows over the course of the film and the explanation given for their friendship/partnership is pitch perfect. A very important character to the comic book universe is introduced (Lucius Fox) and Alfred is given new life and a more sardonic sense of humor by actor Michael Caine. I'm not sure why every single Batman flick has him revealing his secret identity to at least one person (a sad tradition started in the first Burton film), but at least here it's much more plausible. The only disappointing aspect of the film is that Batman's detective skills aren't really shown to exist let alone given a chance to shine. Hopefully that's something they'll rectify in the sequel. And hopefully that sequel will be made with the same talented cast and crew. I'd love to see a true Batman onscreen trilogy. It would be wonderful to see Batman start out at one place and have him end in another over the course of 3 films with the same actors in key roles. It seems to be what Raimi is doing with Spider-Man and what Singer almost did with The X-Men. I think the Batman character deserves to be handled with respect and a truly definitive cinematic saga shouldn't be too much for fanboys to hope for. If such a saga is to come, then this film is the perfect place for it to begin.

Sets a new benchmark for the genre.......2007-04-14

Aside from setting a benchmark for other franchises (perhaps most notably 007) to follow, Batman Begins is a remarkably ambitious and mostly successful attempt to bring some real substance to the comic book genre beyond mere mood. It has a sense of the epic to it, as well as an awareness of the escalation of moral quandaries that come with taking the law into your own hands that haven't been seen in a big-budget summer picture since Clear and Present Danger. It's not just a case of a superhero fighting a supervillain either: the various mobsters, evil geniuses and crooked businessmen are all part of a much larger corruption that ensures that even a semblance of moral balance cannot be restored by the end credits as per other superhero flicks. Christopher Nolan even manages to get strong performances from actors who had long ago drifted into ham and volume like Gary Oldman and Rutger Hauer. It also has a few problems, not least the lack of depth in the photography or Nolan's deficiencies as an action director (not Michael Bay bad, but not particularly good either), but they're outweighed by the pluses.

The 2-disc set boasts an impressive array of extras (including numerous Easter Eggs), although the lovingly crafted comicbook art menu pages can get a little annoying to work your way through at times and it's a shame that only the brief teaser trailer has been included.

A great Reboot.......2007-04-12

I'm going to start off with this... as much as a LOVE comic books movies I originally didn't want to see this movie becasue of Katie Holmes, i'm not the biggest fan of her acting, and when i did see this movie she didn't impress me then either, but the rest of the cast is great!.

Batman Begins s a movie made for a home theater system, it has great visuals and an even better plot. Don't worry if you've never read any of the Batman comics, or if god forbid your only experience is with the previous Batman movies, since this is a reboot there is no previous history.

But why should you buy this edition instead of the one disk edition... two words, bonus features! I adore bonus features. The set includes mini documentaries galore, the trailer that helped get us pumped up months before the movie came out, and a mini comic book ( mini in size not length). However this movie is missing one of my favorite DVD features, the commentary, be it from the actors or the director i love watching movies with commentaries.

All that being said, its a good buy, and i don't think you will be dissapointed.

The Batman Movie we all wanted to see in the first place!.......2007-01-25

There were and are a few grumblings from critics here and there but ultimately this film garnered near unanimous applause and a huge sigh of relief. Batman Begins is not perfect by any measure but is easily the best Batman movie ever, not that it had serious competition from it's predecessors. The first thing director Christopher Nolan does is say the hell with the neon colors, the over the top comic book sensibility, the freakshow circuses, let's take Batman back to his roots. Strip him of all the tarnish and the villians and the crazy gadgets. Let's go to the core of who he is. Who is Batman? Who is Bruce Wayne? How did Bruce Wayne become Batman? Everyone knows the answers to these questions but we never saw these questions answered vividly before our very eyes on the cinematic screen before Batman Begins. One of the genius strokes of this movie is the fact that Batman is not even shown onscreen for the first hour of the film! Unbelievable! That had to have Warner Brothers executives biting their fingernails incessantly. Will those pesky teenagers in the audience sit still as the story of Batman is allowed to unfold at an unhurried pace? Apparently those pesky teenagers weren't so dumb after all since the film was quite a hit. Hey, even adults liked this movie, two birds with one stone.

Christian Bale is the best actor to inhabit this character, ever. Some may have their nostalgia for Michael Keaton but Keaton was very low-key and let the freakshow villians dominate his movies with their antics. Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman is a marked difference from previous actors, he is involving and fascinating as a character. From the tragedy of his past to the glory of his future, the whole path of this character makes perfect dramatic sense. Michael Caine does his job as Alfred, Liam Neeson is an intelligent villian, Cillian Murphy gets a bit on my nerves, but anyhow, the only person who lets the cast down is Katie Holmes. She's just there to be a pretty face and she's not that pretty! Gary Oldman as Gordan is right on the money. Morgan Freeman, Tom Wilkinson and even Rutger Hauer are terrific supporting characters. Ken Watanabe's short appearance is significant too. That's a lot of name actors!

The script and pacing are terrific, however Batman Begins does have it's faults. Let me list them. There seems to be too many characters and plot points as if Nolan wants to ram a far more epic story into the running time. Then there is the question of the action scenes, Nolan's directing of action is still in it's infancy and there is no action set-piece to take your breath away and go, "Wow, that's amazing!". So the action scenes leave something to be desired and the Batmobile looks like [...] to be honest, but it's design makes sense in light of Nolan's more realistic take on the whole Batman mythology. ( The Batmobile still looks very derivative, admit it! ).

Overall, this film was a joy to watch. I saw it on the huge IMAX screen and was very happy to finally be witness to the Batman film we all rightfully deserved. In light of the box-office victory and the critical triumph, this film should not have been called Batman Begins, but instead Batman Redeemed!

Does the Special Edition have an Audio Commentary?.......2007-01-12

Does anyone know if there is an Audio Commentary? (Usually done by the director, writers, actors, etc). I'm looking for the running commentary where the filmmakers talk over the film about the making of it and so on. Post a response if you know. Thanks!

Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). I love this move. It's so full of emotions. It's about Rocky (Eric Stoltz), a 16 year old boy who has a deformed face. His mother is Rusty (played by Cher) and she really fights for her son to have a normal life. Both of them have their devoted friends in a biker environment. I've seen it a lot of times and I cry every time. Heartfelt and excellent acting

I liked it so much better when Eric Stoltz lived with that other family and decided to shack up with his tomboy drummer next-door neighbor chick with the new wave hairdo and duds, and tight little body. He turned down the annoying, future homemaker-looking Mrs. Popularity in the process. Amazing! Damn, it looks like Eric got stung in the face by a wild pack of bees for hours and then had his head stretched on a rack after being taken in by his new foster mom and biker gang. Don't worry, these are the same bikers as the ones who deliver cute little stuffed animals to kids with leukemia, so it's all good. Not! Later, if you'll remember, Eric devolves into a drug addict bank robber in Paris and eventually earns a living selling drugs to folks like Vincent Vega, an inane, puffy-faced and high-ranking Scientology official. So I guess you can at least partly blame Eric for "Battlefield Earth."

How About A 2-Disc Set? With A Documentary About The Real Rocky Dennis.......2006-08-27

I am not going to write about the movie as what more can be said, its incredible, emotional, touching, etc.

I think they need to make a definitive 2-disc edition.
On it, should at least be the following:

-All the extras from this version plus new extras
-A documentary about the real Rocky Dennis, including actual pictures, interviews, etc.
-Where is Eric Stoltz in the extras? Should have interviews with Eric about what it was like playing Rocky Dennis, etc.
- I love the Springsteen music in it but also enjoyed the music in the theatrical version so they should include that version on the 2nd disc.
-At the end of the movie after the credits roll Cher comes on and talks about the disease/disfigurement. This should be longer and could include experts talking about it like doctors, family members, etc. I also think they should've put the Cher interview on the actual special features listing in the dvd and on the back of the case, why have it buried at the end of the movie where not everyone will see it?

hopefully you found this review helpful, if enough people did, maybe the studio will see the demand and release a definitive 2-disc set.

Mask .......2006-07-08

Mask is the ultimate Biker movie about the close bond between a mother and her son. There are some awesome scenes that are not shown on VHS or on TV. Everytime I watch this I cry. Sam Elliott is the best Biker Boyfriend for his part. Eric Stoltz outdid himself in this movie and Cher was awesome and really brought this one to home. Cheers

5 stars for Original 2 for Director's Cut.......2006-06-29

This Director's Cut is bad, simply because it's not the original threatrical version - I liked the old soundtrack and with this one the Springsteen songs seem way too overused and doesn't fit. It was fine the way it was.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Charlie's Vision.......2007-05-18

Watching this movie with the director's comments you learn that the operating budget for the film was 18 million dollars. Also the studio almost cut the 'Cuban Pete' scene until early screenings revealed it to be the most popular scene in the movie. Jim Carrey is actually singing however Cameron Diaz, who performs earlier is not. Charlie Russel does not say Cameron Diaz isn't singing but his silence during her performance spoke volumes to me. 18 million is an incredible figure because that amount of money would currently be required to get Carrey or Diaz in any movie that wasn't pure voice over work. The Mask is entirely Charles Russel's vision minus 2 deleted scenes. The scene where Peggy is brutally slain was rightfully deleted. The scene where Leif Erickson discovers America by accident as a byproduct of the cursed masks' disposal could have stayed in but would have begged a revisitation of sorts so was cut for brevity and cohesion. Carrey is sympathetic as Ipcus and hilarious as the Mask. The talented supporting cast misses no notes. Cameron Diaz has never been more alluring on camera. Many successful movies have employed surreal period themes. The Mask uses a circa 1940's theme to good effect. This movie was under rated in it's day but has stood the test of time and still represents Carrey's most cohesive and compelling comedy performance. The movie is also a lesson to studios that over meddle in decisions that are creative. As a result 'The Mask' is a much better movie than 'Bruce Almighty' even tho the budgets for the two films were 40 million dollars apart.

LOCO POR TI JIM CAREY!.......2007-05-14

This is one of my fav movies of all times, i can watch it over and over again, it was the same humor as ace ventura but of course i think ace ventura is a lil bit more funny. Anyways, this cool dvd comes in widescreen version and has spanish, french and english subtitles and English audio only. It has many cool features and the quality is exellent

This was the movie that made me love Jim Carrey. What an excellent use of his physical comedic abilities. The story line is very simple: Stanley Ipkiss aka Mr Nice Guy gains almost unlimited confidence when he puts on a strange mask he discovered in a river one night. The Mask, the character he transforms into is able to change shape, size, create things from nothing and blends the sublime from slapstick cartoons with real live action scenes. This was the 2nd hit movie after the breakthrough Ace Ventura role in the same year.

Some people may or may not know but this was also the film in which Cameron Diaz made her feature film debut. She has never looked better since. Even in the two Charlie's Angels film she does not look as good as this. And the open sequence where she is introduced must be one of those rare moments in cinematic history with a great use of the camera.

Overall this is a hilarious farce from beginning to end. Jim Carrey is absolutely brilliant in both characters, the meek and mild Stanley Ipkiss, and the wild and crazy Mask. I think we all wish that we could sometimes embrace a wilder side within ourselves because it allows us feel more alive. This is a classic in modern comedy and for anyone who's a Jim Carrey fan.

This film produced a spin off cartoon series for a short while. The sad part is the sequel didn't feature Jim and I refused to watch it for that very reason.

A final thought there is two dance sequences which stand out. And Jim does all his own dance moves in this film for which I think one must certainly applaud him.

I am not a big fan of Jim Carrey, animation mixed with live action, or Cameron Diaz. Despite all this, The Mask is a favorite of mine and gets five stars because of a series of intangibles I'll list below:

1. Attitude. This movie never takes itself too seriously. Its sole reason for exisiting is to have fun and make you laugh. I think some movies acquire an "attitude" that can permeate all of the performances and seep into the experience of the viewer. This was definitely the case here. Kudos to the Director and the entire cast and crew, who made this film experience a good time and alot of laughs from beginning to end!

2. Supporting Cast. Like all great comedies, the supporting cast has a big if not bigger role than the "name" comedian. From Art Carney and Audrey Meadows in the Honeymooners, to Jason Alexander and Julia Dreyfuss in Seinfeld. In the Mask, I particularly loved the performances of Peter Riegert as the Leutenant, Richard Jeni as Stanley's pal, and of course, that Russel Terrier as Milo. Great performance by Milo as he swims away with the mast in the last scene.

3. Song and Dance. Many reviewers overlook this fabulous part of the Mask. The dancing is fantastic, from Stanley's dance with Cameron's character at the Coco Bongo Club, to the fabulous "Cuban Pete" extravaganza in the street out side the park. Outstanding. The soundtrack definitely enhanced the movie for me.

4. The story line. I don't know why so many reviewers thought the plot was lame. It worked for me.

Anyway, don't discount this movie if you aren't a Jim Carrey fan. Rent it, sit back and relax. You'll enjoy it.

The many faces of Jim Carrey.......2006-10-25

I felt this was a great performance on the part of Jim Carrey, but the plot lacked for me. One shouldn't expect reality in a Carrey film, but it would have been nice to have seen this done a little more sensably. The plot is there, and boils down to make a point but I guess this really just isn't my cup of tea. This production was very well done with great visual effects, good acting, casting and a lot of comedy. The real hero of this film, is of course the dog who gives an academy award performance. I think he might have actually stolen the lead from Carrey on this one. Not a very thought provoking film, but funny and entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who loves outlandish, far-fetched comedy.
