While watching An Evening with Kevin Smith 2 (let's skip over that stupid subtitle, shall we?), you may ask yourself, "Why should I give a **** about anything Kevin Smith has to say?"--and then you'll be laughing in agreement with a lot of what he says. For better or worse, the potty-mouthed creator of Clerks and Dogma is an expert at combining his own "View Askew" perspective with stand-up comedy and ribald Q&A with (mostly) appreciative audiences. The novelty here is that Smith (now looking richer and more custom-tailored than he did on the cover of An Evening with Kevin Smith ) is equally at home with fans in Toronto and London, where his cross-cultural observations inform much of their humorous interaction. Whether he's discussing the X-Men movies as homosexual allegory, recalling how his wife caught him masturbating to pictures of her that he shot for Playboy, or making prescient observations about Mel Gibson's career meltdown (just a few of the many topics covered here), Smith remains admirably frank about his fan-base, his limited skills as a filmmaker, and his counter-cultural status as a chubby fan-boy who made good in Hollywood. Even when he tests your tolerance with opinions best kept to himself, Smith is a focused observer of his own milieu, willing to expose his insecurities while refusing to suffer fools in his audience (and there are more than a few).

As with his previous stand-up DVD, Smith welcomes frequent (and now drug-free) costar Jason Mewes onstage for some extreme (and extremely funny) sex-talk, including demonstrations of Mewes' "half-half-whole" technique (don't ask), and later (as a disc 2 bonus feature) approaching young London women with a the kind of pick-up lines (like "Let me get up in them guts") that only a guy like Mewes could get away with. Dropping F-bombs like there's no tomorrow, Smith is crude but intelligent (nobody makes it on luck alone), and this two-disc set will satisfy established fans and would-be converts alike. Likewise, Smith-haters will find nothing to change their minds, since Smith occasionally comes across as smug and self-satisfied, even when he's really not. What matters here is the humor of a self-effacing guy who's never quite sure if he deserves his own success. That puts Smith on even terms with his fans, and it's that dynamic, more than anything else, that makes these concerts a whole lot of fun. --Jeff Shannon

An Evening with Kevin Smith

This is a must have for all fans of Kevin Smith and his movies. A lot of people have said this already about this DVD, and it is because it's true. You get Kevin, for nearly three hours on these two discs, answering all of the questions we always wanted to know. There are a lot of funny moments, but all of it is very informative. It is just something that you have to have if you are a fan, simple as that. I'm a Q&A fan, so I love listening to my favorite writer/director spill his guts on topics and just learn more from the man. If you are like me, once again, get it!

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder

The title of the movie says it all, this is definitely a more dirtier and possibly offensive Kevin Smith. If you don't understand his humor, good odds are that there will be something you will be offended by. Jesus, America, and the sex life of his deceased dad are all addressed in the sequel. That wasn't what lost me, but like many here have said, it just wasn't as funny and didn't answer a lot of questions like the first movie did. Kevin gets asked a question then gets side tracked and goes on for thirty minutes about things that aren't even related to the topic. This happens more than once when he asks "What was your question?" It'd be great, but he just kind of rambles on stuff that isn't that funny, except to himself. There are some things he said that had me laughing a long while after he said it, but sadly, the entire show wasn't like that.

However, Disc 2 in London is hilarious! It is back to the quality of the first documentary, at least for me. It had a really good Q & A and the jokes were really funny!

Overall, this is a good collection to get if you are a fan. It's just that the second movie isn't as good as the first, only the second disc of Evening Harder really lives up to the first movie. You may not agree with the review, but watch it yourself and you will see that the second isn't nearly as good, until disc 2. I'm still a huge fan of Kevin Smith and these two movies, there is good to be found on both DVDs, just not so much on "Evening Harder".

I LOVED this movie combo! I think Kevin Smith is great! His movies are always funny and this stand up is just as good, if not better. You can really get a feel for his and Jason Mews's personalities.

Despite being a Kevin Smith fanboy myself, I still could not muster up much enthusiasm for the second of his Evening With Kevin Smith dvds. I would recommend the first one to almost anyone. It is gut-bustingly hilarious throughout with a good dose of inside humor. But this one is almost sad at times in how unfunny it is. I would like to think that Kevin was just having a bad day (twice), not the depressing idea that he may have already spilled his good "stories" on the first one. This is for K.S. fanatics and completists only.

Dogma
Kevin Smith is a conundrum of a filmmaker: he's a writer with brilliant, clever ideas who can't set up a simple shot to save his life. It was fine back when Smith was making low-budget films like Clerks and Chasing Amy, both of which had an amiable, grungy feel to them, but now that he's a rising director who's attracting top talent and tackling bigger themes, it might behoove him to polish his filmmaking. That's the main problem with Dogma--it's an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith's writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he's not topnotch should take a look at Chasing Amy), his direction hasn't. It's too bad, because Dogma is ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe. Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they'd destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It's up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith's cast is exceptional--with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael--and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly... subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director. --Mark Englehart

This has to be Kevin Smiths best! From the very first line of the movie to the last,the satirical script will have you in stitches. In a nutshell to rouge angels trying to get back to Heaven whilst being pursued by everyone from the devil to a poo monster will have you back on the couch time & time again.

If you love Kevin Smith then this is a must see. Jason even shows up for a bit. He looks very dapper in normal clothing being a normal person. They talk about everything under the sun. They interact with the crowd. It is a great video.

An Evening with Kevin Smith

This is a must have for all fans of Kevin Smith and his movies. A lot of people have said this already about this DVD, and it is because it's true. You get Kevin, for nearly three hours on these two discs, answering all of the questions we always wanted to know. There are a lot of funny moments, but all of it is very informative. It is just something that you have to have if you are a fan, simple as that. I'm a Q&A fan, so I love listening to my favorite writer/director spill his guts on topics and just learn more from the man. If you are like me, once again, get it!

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder

The title of the movie says it all, this is definitely a more dirtier and possibly offensive Kevin Smith. If you don't understand his humor, good odds are that there will be something you will be offended by. Jesus, America, and the sex life of his deceased dad are all addressed in the sequel. That wasn't what lost me, but like many here have said, it just wasn't as funny and didn't answer a lot of questions like the first movie did. Kevin gets asked a question then gets side tracked and goes on for thirty minutes about things that aren't even related to the topic. This happens more than once when he asks "What was your question?" It'd be great, but he just kind of rambles on stuff that isn't that funny, except to himself. There are some things he said that had me laughing a long while after he said it, but sadly, the entire show wasn't like that.

However, Disc 2 in London is hilarious! It is back to the quality of the first documentary, at least for me. It had a really good Q & A and the jokes were really funny!

Overall, this is a good collection to get if you are a fan. It's just that the second movie isn't as good as the first, only the second disc of Evening Harder really lives up to the first movie. You may not agree with the review, but watch it yourself and you will see that the second isn't nearly as good, until disc 2. I'm still a huge fan of Kevin Smith and these two movies, there is good to be found on both DVDs, just not so much on "Evening Harder".

I LOVED this movie combo! I think Kevin Smith is great! His movies are always funny and this stand up is just as good, if not better. You can really get a feel for his and Jason Mews's personalities.

Despite being a Kevin Smith fanboy myself, I still could not muster up much enthusiasm for the second of his Evening With Kevin Smith dvds. I would recommend the first one to almost anyone. It is gut-bustingly hilarious throughout with a good dose of inside humor. But this one is almost sad at times in how unfunny it is. I would like to think that Kevin was just having a bad day (twice), not the depressing idea that he may have already spilled his good "stories" on the first one. This is for K.S. fanatics and completists only.

It's a Kevin Smith film, but it ain't funny as the 1st Evening with Smith. teh man enters with his vulgarity and slap stick sense of humor to his personal and professional life of film industries and family.
