Description
Screen favorite Kurt Russell (VANILLA SKY, STARGATE) teams up with funnyman Martin Short (FATHER OF THE BRIDE I&II, JUNGLE2JUNGLE) in an outrageously wild comedy that's sure to drive you overboard! Russell plays hilariously laid-back Captain Ron -- a vagabond seaman who charts a course for comedy when he skippers the newly inherited Caribbean yacht of corporate executive Martin Harvey (Short) and his family! With his dubious nautical skills, Captain Ron takes the helm and creates wave after wave of hilarity as he leads the Harveys on a wildly amusing oceanic voyage in their dilapidated sailing vessel, all the while driving well-meaning Martin Harvey off the deep end!

Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon

From the mind of Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds.

3 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Film.......2007-07-03

This is a pretty good story with pretty good acting. Not great by any means and not as good as an average episode of Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Shows you how far down the Sci Fi movie franchise has fallen that some people think of this as a classic. Not a waste of money but it wouldn't hurt to wait to see it on cable either.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Sci-Fi movie you've never seen!.......2007-06-28

The thing that many people do not understand is that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A FAN OF THE SHOW TO LOVE THIS MOVIE. This has everything you wish Lucas had provided in the prequels: great acting, kicking action, moving characters, and a great plot. The feel is gritty but with great heart. He has a message but will not preach to you. Surprises, love and a message about humanity make it complete. If you ever wished you could find a Sci-Fi movie on the big screen that you could love, do yourself a favor and give this movie a try. You will not go away unmoved.

5 out of 5 stars "I've always been a fast healer...'course, I believe in Jesus.".......2007-05-10

CAPTAIN RON is my favorite stupid movie. The story of Captain Ron Rico, a one-eyed scoundrel and charter boat skipper (in that order) and the white bread and mayonnaise Harvey family from Chicagoland, this movie is just so absurdly over the top that it's irresistible.

The Harveys have inherited a sea hag that once belonged to Gable and Lombard. The old wooden ketch is gorgeously appointed but dry-rotted and barely seaworthy. Dad Martin Harvey (Martin Short) decides that there's one last sail left in her---to the breaker's yard. He convinces his wife Katherine (Mary Kay Place) and his children Caroline (Meadow Sisto) and Ben (Benjamin Cunningham) to have a nicely planned out "spontaneous adventure" taking the old wreck from the mythical Isle of St. Pomme de Terre ("It means St. Potato, honey." "No it doesn't.") to Miami.

Since the Harveys can't sail, they hire the disreputable Captain Ron to skipper the boat. Kurt Russell has so much fun playing Captain Ron that he literally eats the storyboards, giving us a portrayal that's half Jimmy Buffett and half Baby Huey spiked with Malibu Rum. His one-liners are all priceless ("Yeah, incentives are important, I learned that in rehab.") and they are constant.

Captain Ron is a consummate sailor, but in the tradition of the true Old Salts of yore, he's totally ragtag, disdaining charts, fuel capacity, weather conditions, international politics, sobriety, and the Harveys own plans as he wanders, Odysseus-like from island to island, drinking, seducing women, enraging husbands, outrunning insurgents, and avoiding arrest on any number of charges, all with the bewildered Harveys in tow.

But as adventure piles on adventure (including a brief internment in Cuba, and a pitched battle with a pirate ship named "Albondiga" i.e., "The Meatball"), Captain Ron shows a daring and competence under pressure that his happy-go-lucky ways belie, thus winning the hearts of the Harveys.

The lemon in this lemonade is the usually sidesplitting Martin Short, who comes across as mostly inept. As the rest of the family starts to take a shine to their bizarre shipmate and he to them, Short never quite manages to have the obligatory male bonding moment with Captain Ron. In Short's defense, he's also stuck with some of the dumbest dialogue ever written for the screen ("You said GOrilla, not GUERRilla...Go, guh, go, guh." and "I can't stand Captain Ron, he's eating my brain!" (?)).

This is Kurt Russell's film and he got 95% of the good lines. Short got stuck with ALL the downers. That's a shame, and it's the only flaw in this otherwise uproarious film. Everybody on the set looks like they're about to lose it utterly, and that's part of the fun of watching. A good time is definitely had by all.

CAPTAIN RON is a cult comedy classic. If you've ever owned a boat or sailed, you will instantly recognize Captain Ron as the squint-eyed grinning undine who lives aboard every boat and in the heart of every true sailor. This is my favorite stupid movie for a reason, and it'll be yours, too. Once you meet CAPTAIN RON you'll never see the sea the same way.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie - especially if you have ever owned a boat!.......2007-03-21

This movie was before its time! It is full of hilarious one-liners, tongue-in-cheek humor, and, at times, outrageous situations that kept us and our kids howling with laugher (thought it helps that we have had a boat in the family at one time - kind of "one of 'them' boats," if you know what I mean).
The humor is very similar to The Three Amigos (another of our family favorites); indeed, if you liked the Three Amigos, I think you will very much like Captain Ron, and, if not, you might not like Captain Ron either.
Overall, this is a good family film, with lots of clean humor, one that especially will appeal to families who have had (mis)adventures in the outdoors!

3 out of 5 stars Typical comedy - You'll laugh but wonder why you spent the time.......2007-01-05

This is a good movie to say it briefly. It's a good comedy, it has some family - gee whiz factors to it, as well as a few scenes that are extremely predictable, but overall it's just a fun movie. My wife didn't want to watch it, but after forcing her to watch it, she enjoyed it as well.

Great movie to showcase the TRUE Pirates of the Carribean. :)

This movie is similar to the Great Outdoors meets Overboard

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny!.......2006-08-15

This is one of our favorite movies, and being sailors, we - and almost every other sailor we know - always have this movie on our boat! (This order was actually to "upgrade" from VHS to DVD.)

5 out of 5 stars My family loves this movie!!!.......2006-08-07

Like another reviewer stated here we also take this DVD to the beach with us every summer. My college age kids and I can recite the dialog right along with the actors. The cast (especially Kurt Russell) all look like they had a blast making this movie. I even remember reading in one of Jimmy Buffett's books where he quotes Captain Ron, saying something along the lines of "As Captain Ron would say '...if anything's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there". I can't say enough about this movie, and anyone who doesn't at least chuckle a little at Captain Ron's antics probably can't find humor in anything. In fact, I noticed 4 negative reviews of the movie out of 111 (112 counting this review)which tells me that those 4 who gave it negative reviews probably aren't a whole lotta fun anyway so I don't really care what they think. Now, if they'd only come out with a sequel...

The sacrifice of a beloved character is just one of many highlights in Nemesis, the 10th feature in the lucrative Star Trek franchise. Enigmatically billed as the beginning of "A Generation's Final Journey," this richly plotted Next Generation adventure maintains the "even number rule" regarding Trek's feature quality, and it's one of the best in the series. It hits its brisk stride when Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Enterprise-E crew encounter Shinzon (Tom Hardy), a younger clone of Picard, rejected by the Romulans as the human weapon of an abandoned conspiracy. Raised on the nocturnal Romulan sister planet Remus, Shinzon now plots revenge against Romulus and Earth but needs Picard's blood to carry out his scheme. A wedding, a childlike "duplicate" Data named B-4 (Brent Spiner), spectacular space battles, and uncommon acts of valor make this a tautly-paced action thriller, poised to pass the franchise (but not quite yet) to a new generation of Starfleet personnel. Die-hard Trekkers will not be disappointed. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Not true to the series but..........2007-06-17

its not the worst film I've ever seen. (a few Spoilers below)
The main problems are that the story doesn't hold up to being made as a movie. I could have seen this as a special mini series or something. Everything seemed so THROWN together at the last minute and there were many gaps on continuity from DS9 and the original TNG. I hated the idea of Worf leaving his position with the Klingons to stay with Star Fleet knowing he can never move up in position, no possible way for him to be promoted ever...yet this movie makes it seem like he is doing just that. I liked the idea of him staying with the Klingons as was shown in the last episode of DS9.
What helped me give this movie 3 stars is that the deleted scenes made the movie better in my opinion, and should have been included. That shot with Spot and Worf answered my question as to what would be done with his things and what ever happened to Spot (though I can't see Worf keeping him...they should have had Deanna in the room with Spot and Spot going to her that would have been touching and more plausible). I liked seeing Admiral Janeway too, really helped bring the shows together.
Also it was nice how the extended ending had a new XO come on board and that joke with the captain's chair was nice.
Without the extras, however, I would only give this 2 stars. It was a disappointment for a true fan of the ST universe.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, very dark for a Star Trek Movie.......2007-06-04

I'm not a fan of the dark movies, it may create an evil effect, but also makes it hard for the viewer to enjoy all that there is to be seen. This does live up to the Franchise history. Good battle scenes, conflict between good and evil, and true victory to the one that out thinks or out strategizes the other. I'm glad to see that they continue to bring the "technology" further into the future and that they allow the characters to grow and receive some "promotions" as side stories in it all. All in all, I have to say that I wasn't really disappointed with this movie and have added it to my collection. If you are a Star Trek fan, you should buy it. If you like Sci-Fi movies, you should at least watch it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underapreciated Star Trek Film.......2007-05-15

The final Star Trek film is the most underapreciated in my opinion. I have and always shall be a trekkie. I have all the films and enjoy everyone of them though some are better than others. I have always enjoyed the Romulan stories and for the first time the Romulans are in one of the movies, and it just happens to be the final one. It was a very well done story and is one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Nemesis.......2007-05-06

This was the only S.T. movie I had not seen. Sure glad to have found it and enjoyed it!

3 out of 5 stars PARAMOUNT RAPED THE ORIGINAL ENDING.......2007-05-01

I AM A AVID STAR TREK FAN AND I WAS REALLY DISAPOINTED TO SEE THAT THE DVD VERSION WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE THEATRE VERSION. THERE WAS A HUGE BATTLE SEEN THAT WAS CUT FROM THE DVD VERSION AND I ENJOYED WATCHING IT BUT IT WAS A DISAPOINTMENT ON THE ENDING.

Yes, it's true: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in this Howard Hawks variation on Casablanca but adapted from--as legend has it--Ernest Hemingway's self-declared "worst novel." (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author's least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks's and Bogart's most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious accent to an already wonderful mood. --Tom Keogh

Description

Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?" That red-hot match is Bogart and 19-year-old first-time film actress Lauren Bacall. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including Bacall's legendary whistling instructions), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not. Cannily directed by Howard Hawks and smartly written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman, it doesn't have much similarity to the Ernest Hemingway novel that inspired it. And it strongly resembles Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a piano-playing bluesman (Hoagy Carmichael) and a Martinique bar much like Rick's Cafe Americaine. But first and foremost, it showcases Bogart and Bacall, carrying on with a passion that smolders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls.

5 out of 5 stars YOU KNOW HOW TO WHISTLE, DON'T YOU? .......2007-04-19

A story based, very loosely based I might add, on Ernest Hemingway's short novel. A screenplay written in part by William Faulkner. The lead roles played by the charismatic Humphrey Bogart and the dishy Lauren Bacall with able assists by Walter Brennan and the legendary songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. Some classic Hollywood lines. What is not to like about this 1940's black white film that still plays well after over fifty years. Only if you naively expected faithfulness to the author's novelistic intent by those who bought the film rights. But, don't be silly it happens all the time. If you want Hemingway's gritty tale of a down and out sea captain scratching out a living for his family anyway he can go read the book. Here we are talking about the film adaptation. And on those terms what a seamless piece of cinematic art.

As is the case in most of the early movies the story line is simple. Jaded boy meets slightly world-weary girl in the throes of Vichy-administered Martinique during World War II. Naturally, given the times, the local variant of the French Resistance is in need of help and a skittish, but in the end courageous, Captain Morgan (the Bogart role) is dragged into the middle of it. Some of this is an echo of the story line in Casablanca but this time Bogart, thankfully, does not let the dame go. All the politics and heroics aside this film is all about the romance. For a 1940's film the sexual tension and resolution between Morgan and Slim (Bacall's role) is as steamy as it gets with two people who still have their clothes on. It probably does not hurt the romantic buildup that Bogart and Bacall were becoming an item off-screen, as well. If you want classic Bogart and Bacall this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Beat Bogie!.......2007-04-10

DVD's have really spruced up my life! This is probably my favorite Bogart of them all. For years I have wanted to see it again and now to have it for anytime I want is great!

To me this is just a hair under Casablaca. The whole Nazi thing and the period of World War II movies. Bacall does a pretty good job for a 19 year old! Walter Brennan almost stole the show and it was good to see Delores Moran, what a doll! Always wondered why she made so few movies.

Bogie at his best in a film that almost did'nt get made.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie To Watch.......2007-04-01

I was inspired to watch "To Have and Have Not" by to reasons: Humphrey Bogart was always one of my favorite actors of Golden Age and also after reading an amazing book by Lauren Bacall " By myself and Some More".

The movie shows a great chemistry between Bogart and Bacall, the good actors can always convince us that there is chemistry, but when it's the real thing it is something different. "To Have and Have Not" is the starting point of one of the most romantic relationships in Old Hollywood.

Movie has great humour, some lines are hilarious, and leaves you cheered up. My only regret that it is a bit too short!

5 out of 5 stars Bogie And Bacall - Where It All Began...........2007-01-19

Supposedly Howard Hawkes told Ernest Hemingway a movie could be made of the "least" of the author's novels. And Hemingway signed over the rights to this novel. Between the movie and novel there is barely anything to compare, other than the main character's name is Harry Morgan, he has a sidekick by the name of Eddie, and a romantic interest by name of Marie. Mercifully, Howard Hawkes changed everything about the novel and cast Humphrey Bogart in the lead role. By casting up and coming model Lauren Bacall opposite Humphrey Bogart, movie history - and legend - was born.

The plot and dialogue in this film are certainly not stellar, and there are many other films from the 1940s that far outshine this one. However, the chemistry and sparks that ignite between Bogie and Bacall cannot be denied. Bogie plays the role he is most known for: self-possessed, street-wise, hard-boiled, with just a touch of desperation. This is the man one wants around in a crisis.

But Lauren Bacall plays a new type of leading lady. Beautiful and sexy, yes, but smart. This gal is not given over to hysterics or drama. Her life hasn't been easy, but she isn't sinking into a bottle or embittered about it. She faces life like a challenge - and knows that somehow she's going to win it. She's tough without being rough, strong while still looking fabulous, and she can turn a man to jello with "the look." If for no other reason, it is worth seeing this movie just to watch the debut of this actress!

When the movie ends, I'll doubt one remembers the plot or what everyone was up to and it won't even matter. This movie revolves so strongly around Bogie and Bacall, and they certainly do hold it together so very, very well, one doesn't even miss the rest of the movie. A pure delight!

3 out of 5 stars Bacall was blessed by nature with two advantages..........2007-01-15

Lauren Bacall, who gave men the license to whistle, was blessed by nature with two advantages: the personality of a buddy and the look of a Femme Fatale...

This combination initially took the only 19-years-old actress to the top with her first two films - 'To Have and Have Not' and 'The Big Sleep' - scoring a success even the deadpan expressions of a Buster Keaton could not undermine...

It helped, of course, to be co-starred in them with Humphrey Bogart who fell in love with her during shooting, and to have Howard Hawks, who deliberately set out to prove that he could make her a star, directing her every move in the same totally controlled way Joseph Von Sternberg had done with Marlene Dietrich...

'To Have and Have Not' is an almost unrecognizable adaptation of the Hemingway novel... The Rick character again appears, though with a new name... The film is a fairly routinely adventure, with a plot that isn't all that interesting, and with a frequently laughable dialog, but it sparks into life when Bogart and the leading blonde, with whom he is deeply in love and to whom he will later be married, appear...

The girl is Lauren Bacall, in her first movie... Cool, smooth, and gorgeous, she sets the screen on fire from her first entrance... She was a new kind of heroine...

Opposite Bogart she was colorful and believable... She had no illusions about herself... She was used to getting by, making out as best she could... She wanted Bogey and she let him know it... She offers herself to him, bravely and without shame: ' You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. (She opens his door and pauses.) You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together - and blow.'

With the effective use of her sexy, sultry, speaking voice and her confident eyes, Howard Hawks creates a new screen image, and one of the most sizzling yet sexual propositions on film...

Lauren Bacall has become heir to our memories of the truly memorable star of the 1940s, and, in her own way, one of them...

"To Have or Have Not" was remade as "The Breaking Point" with John Garfield and "The Gun Runners" with Audie Murphy and both were, inferior to the original...

2 out of 5 stars missed chance for movie.......2007-06-23

I'm a late bloomer trekie fan. Within the past 4 four years I really got into the Star Trek world (I'm a die hard TNG,DS9, & VGY fan). I also just buying most of the movies.
I looked forward to Nemesis mainly because of the Romulan angle. To me, they are the most intresting group that never received their full due in any movie.
I felt that the plot was very weak and was ok for a one time viewing. I know with all the great stories on the shows that someone could have written a better movie.
I hope the upcoming movie is alot better.

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek saga.......2007-05-13

Not the best Star Trek movie ever, but well done and with some good ideas for future spin offs.

5 out of 5 stars Must have StarTrek Next Gen Movie.......2007-04-07

If you like star trek at all, this video is a must. Being the last movie in the Next Genenation era, and a culmination of 20 years of Next Gen content, this movie will blow you away (especially the ending!!)

5 out of 5 stars TNG goes out with a bang.......2007-02-23

Not sure what is up with the negative reviews but, personally I loved it. It does a good job of trying to intergrate all these characters into this movie. The role Data has in this is great and the picard/clone relationship was good. Riker and Troi have their moment and we even get a Janeway, Wesley, Guinan appearance. Might have liked one more space battle but, the last one was very impressive and the general end was impressive and wasnt' expecting it to happen the way it did. In general it just showed me why the TNG was so great. Even in the interaction between the crew is vintage STar trek TNG.

The only downside is that Worf one of my favs didnt' have a big role but, for the price here it's a must buy

2 out of 5 stars maybe the worst of the series.......2006-06-04

This movie was just plain stupid. That Shinzon character didn't look anything like Picard, I mean give me a break. Plus the humor was just so cringe-inducing. It literally gave me a stomach ache.

5 out of 5 stars Last Days of Glory.......2007-01-12

Star Treks days of glory have come to an end. STAR TREK - NEMESIS may be the final cinematic chapter the STAR TREK Next Generation crew. Interestingly this is a dark and somewhat bleak looking film involving the Romulans. The film is actually good but the pessimistic atmosphere leaves one yearning for the glory days of STAR TREK be they the old or next generation. Jerry Goldsmith's final Star Trek score is outstanding and one of his best.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek and PSP fans will be pleased.........2006-07-30

The only downside to this video was it plays so quietly on PSP. I first watched it on a plane and the volume was so low (even when the volume was up all the way) i couldn't hear anything at all and had to watch in subtitles..and what fun is watching a star trek film without being able to hear captain picard say engage!! but all around a great film. If you haven't seen it and are a trekky, I'm disappointed because it's definitly my favorite. And Hey-if you love Data you better get this! because...well...i cried. thats all i have to say.

4 out of 5 stars A Great End to the 'Next Generation' Movies.......2006-01-15

Star Trek: Nemesis is simply a great movie. The reason that this has gotten bad reviews is because it's a different Star Trek movie. A lot of the ones in the past revolve around characters and funny situations. This one, however, is very dark with lots of action sequences. It makes a great movie.

The story is about Captain Picard on a mission to the Neatural Zone to talk about Peace to the romulans. Little does he know that he is flying right to his long-lost clone.

Instead of a happy re-union, things quickly turn into an all-out war between the two. The action scenes are probably the best of any Star Trek film (besides First Contact). The part where Picard drives his ship into his clones ship is classic.

Data's character is also revealed here, and is actually quite touching. In the beginning he sings Blue Skies (yup, Data sings), in the end (spoiler) he dies saving the ship.

All in all, the couldn't have done better ending the Next Generation movies. It has humor (Data, shut up!). It has mystery. It has awesome battle sequences. What more could you want from a Star Trek movie! I own every single Star Trek movie, and this one ranks up there as one of my favorites. It's my first PSP movie, and I'm glad I got it. WATCH THE SCENE WHERE THE SHIPS CRASH OVER AND OVER AGAIN! It's so awesome, you eyes will be glued to your PSP!

4 out of 5 stars "Star Trek: The Next Generation" goes out with a whimper.......2005-09-07

The plot of "Star Trek: Nemesis" comes down to three situations. First, and most importantly, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) discovers that he not only has a clone (Tom Hardy) who was created by the Romulans by raised by the Remuseans, but that the enterprising Shinzon has become Praetor of the Romulan Empire, which has a weapon that can destroy all life on Earth. Second, in an obvious parallel, Data (Brent Spiner) discovers yet another of Dr. Soong's prototype androids, named B-4 (also Spiner). Third, and finally in more ways than one, Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) are finally getting married. This 10th Star Trek film, and four in the STNG part of the series, has its moments but is ultimately less than satisfying.

Part of the problem is that even before the film's climatic death scene we are already aware that we have another Star Trek death that is not really death scene. Yes, this is certainly more plausible than the first one in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"/"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," but that it is at the expense of the shock and emotional impact the first time around. Consequently, the big payoff rings hollow, which is never a good sing for a major theatrical release.

Another part of the problem is that the cast is so large that few of them have much of value to do. Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton) has been standing by for several films mainly to ask Data what he is doing so the android can explain, Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) waits for casualties to show up in sick bay, and Worf (Michael Dorn) is at least good for a few laughs with the comments he makes in his cups while everyone is toasting Riker and Troi. As far as the movies go, STNG has boiled down to Picard and Data, and the rest are along for the ride, posing stiffly and formly in the background. That being said, "Nemesis" finally gives Counselor Troi the main supporting role and a couple of scenes when she proves she can give as well as receive. But overall there are two many cast members sitting around with little or nothing to do; compare this with the series finale "All Good Things..."

Finally, there are just too many significant gaps in the thinking of the main characters. Picard and his clone think they understand each other as if in the future the nature versus nurture issue has gone the way of safety belts being required on alll chairs on spaceships. Yes, having a clone is creeping. Yes, having your clone serving in a Romulan slave pit is disturbing. But the idea that the result is a younger version of itself was never legitimated by novels/films like "The Boys From Brazil." This is supposed to be the future, but the "science" here is about on par with a 1950s film. If I, who know virtually nothing about science in general or cloning in particular can see the holes in this logic, than Picard's Starfleet Academy training should serve him in much better stead.

Now that we are apparently here at the end of the road for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" it might be appropriate to conduct a post mortem and consider the question of why the theatrical films were never as good as any of the two-part episodes of the television series. The short explanation is they went for bigger (e.g., the Borg rewrite human history) rather than better. What is so puzzling is why a creative staff that came up with several solid story lines almost every season for many years could not cut it when it was required to come up with one very good idea every few years. "Star Trek - Nemesis" has the characters of STNG but neither the style nor the substance; what does Picard driving a intergalactic dune buggy have to do with why we loved this television show? Plus, the lighting makes Data's skin look really weird. At least we have the complete "Star Trek: The Next Generation" out on DVD now.

This movie is not good , the plot is below average, the acting is poor the special effects boring, but! the songs written by Richard O'Brien of "rocky horror" fame are great and,it is worth watching tjis movie for the songs and music alone!, or watch it with friends if you want to see how they react to this very strange movie.

5 out of 5 stars SO bad, it's great.......2003-03-28

Finally my own copy of this cult masterpiece.

Just for plain loopiness you must watch, if not own this. Christopher Lee sings! The humour is corney but good natured, an everyday story of good versus evil (I have sent back the morally repugnant, socially decrepit peoples back to the bowls of the Earth they came from - Congratulations Midnight you really are a genius (or something similar)

This is a classic

2 out of 5 stars An Incredibly Strange Movie.......2002-01-02

I can't imagine the meeting where this film was sold. I can't imagine what studio thought "The Return of Captain Invincible" was a great idea. Think about how writer/producer Andrew Gaty and his co-writer Stephen de Souza must have pitched it:

"It's a movie about a superhero, but he's not a superhero any more. You see, his career was ruined by the McCarthy Communist witch hunts so he becomes a drunk and winds up in Australia. But it's a comedy because NO ONE takes superheroes seriously. And it stars Alan Arkin as the drunk superhero and Christopher Lee as the villain. AND it's a musical! With three songs by Richard O'Brien and Richard Hartley who wrote 'The Rocky Horror Show.'"

Who thought this was a great idea?

This movie, along with "The Pirate Movie", goes a long way to convincing me that Australians shouldn't make musicals.

Having said all that, and with the understood proviso that this is NOT A GOOD MOVIE by any means, this is an ENTERTAINING movie. It's the kind of movie that you want to show your friends to watch their reactions--especially if you don't tell them anything about it before hand. For example, the first song, with a stirring thirty second refrain of "Bullsh*t" that starts it, comes twenty minutes into the movie. Talk about surreal. If you had no prior clue that there was singing and dancing in the movie, you'd think that you were just watching a movie trying to be a campy superhero comedy. The song just knocks you for a loop. But the highlights have to be the VERY VERY strange musical numbers featuring Christopher Lee. On DVD, you can isolate these moments and share them with your friends without having to endure the movie that surrounds them.

I saw the movie first in its original VHS release. I can't say that I liked it, but it was memorable. I bought the DVD because of my memories of the Christopher Lee songs. They don't get much weirder than the climactic "Name Your Poison" number. The DVD pressing has no extra features and the screen aspect ratio is wrong. Even though the movie has been letterboxed and the transfer overseen by director Philippe Mora (Howlings II and III), the images are cut off to the left and the right. The end credits can not be read as they are chopped in half on the left hand side of the screen. It looks like the film was shot in 70mm but given a 35mm transfer. This causes some of Mora's compositions to suffer as he did put performers on opposite sides of the frame and in several cases, they are completely offscreen or cut in half in this transfer.

The script was co-written by Stephen de Souza (Die Hards 1 and 2, "48 Hours", "The Spirit" tv movie) tries to be funny. It misses the mark most of the time. It's hard to make camp work. You either have to be extremely outrageous (a la "Airplane!" or "The Naked Gun") or play it so seriously that the absudity becomes funny (the "Batman" TV show of the 60s). de Souza, who has admitted that he doesn't think people can take superheroes seriously, fails in making it work on either level. (Strangely enough, I kinda liked his script for "The Spirit." It was flawed, but seemed to have more affection for the material than his "Captain Invincible" screenplay.) The other writer was the film's producer, Andrew Gaty.

The songs are a mixed bag. The three by O'Brien and Hartley show some genuine wit (which should come as no surprise) and seem to have more in common in terms of style and tone with their score for "Shock Treatment" than "Rocky Horror." The other songs are mostly forgettable. I've seent he movie twice int he past week and I can't recall any of the music outside of the riotously absurd "Name Your Poison" number. The only other song to make an impact is Alan Arkin's heroes and villains number. I liked the lyrics, but the music (a country twang number) doesn't stick with me.

Each time I watched the movie, I couldn't help thinking "What a strange movie" every few minutes. It just gets weirder and weirder as it goes along. It's full of odd ideas and visuals, but most of them don't add up to anything. Just what is Julius (Mr. Midnight's sidekick)? If you think to hard about all the dangling elements and unanswered questions, you'll get a headache!

Bottom line: this is a great movie to watch with friends if you're looking for something to laugh at and be appalled by. Put this on a menu with "Buckaroo Banzai" and "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" for good mindless fun.

5 out of 5 stars I might be old fashioned, but this is a damn good film.......2001-09-03

This film has everything, attractive women without much on, an amusing plot, killer vacuums, hypnotic weapons, super heroes with faulty super powers and Christopher Lee singing some of the catchiest songs around. What more could one man ask for. Well this to have been re-released years ago, and Going Under on DVD as well, but lets not be greedy.
The basic plot (which Iým not going to go into too deeply) revolves around my childhood hero, a certain Mr Evil Midnight, and his plans to become the American President by appealing to the white Anglo-Saxon majority (Or at least they will be in the majority once his cunning, but perhaps slightly racist, evil plan is carried out) The only thing standing in his way is a drunken wreck of a super hero and a mildly attractive Australian Police Person. Armed only with their skills and integrity they attempt to stop the Evil oneýs plans and make the world a better place.
Shame, I kind of like the idea of a genius being elected to the Oval Office instead of the usual people who get in, but maybe thatýs just because Iým English.
But in conclusion, this film will make you laugh, and if it doesnýt it might just make you smile. Well if youýve got a sense of humour that is.
