Cary Grant's penultimate feature before retirement was this cheerful 1964 effort to overturn his career-long image of urbane sophistication. As the unshaven, messy misanthrope Walter Eckland, a World War II-era beach bum who monitors Japanese air activity for the Australian navy in exchange for booze, Grant makes a convincingly hard-bitten, hard-drinking antihero. Until, that is, a pretty French schoolmistress (Leslie Caron) and her seven little charges (all girls) survive a nearby plane crash and invade Eckland's raunchy isolation. Directed by 1960s hit-maker Ralph Nelson (The Lilies of the Field, Charly), Father Goose is a glossy comedy that also does justice to its more suspenseful scenes (a deadly snakebite suffered by Caron's character is especially memorable) and leaves plenty of room for Grant to indulge in some entertaining if atypical screen behavior. All in all, this is a minor treat in the actor's magnificent filmography. --Tom Keogh

I was practically raised on this movie. I have so many memories of watching it with my grandpa, and the movie never loses it's sense of excitement for me. While not sure if I am truly a Cary Grant fan, I still absolutely adore this film. It's one of those things that I can't get out of my system. I could watch this movie repetitively until I die, and still never get enough!!!1

we are both big cary grant fans and this movie shows him at his humorous best. photography and the scenes are beautiful with the plot and acting very enjoyable. we try even to watch this movie when it's on tv. we even know a lot of the dialogue. in short, it is just a good clean story that still makes us smile.

Timeless classic...a must for anyone's movie collection. A near perfect role for Grant at that time in his career and it's a brilliant performance.

Good, for what they are........2003-06-17

You gotta be a fan of Cary Grant to like these. They are fairly typical of the romantic comedies of the time. These movies are kind of like cotton candy -- sweet and enjoyable, but not much substance.

Father Goose is, in my opinion, the better of the two, because is allows Cary Grant to stretch a bit, while still remaining true to the genre. His gruff, unshaven character is a departure from the suave, sophisticated of That Touch of Mink.

If you're a fan of these type of movies, it's a worthy addition.

They all know!! (That Touch of Mink)

Philip Shayne (Cary Grant) rich industrial owner accidentally splashes Cathy Timberlake (Doris Day) out of work computer operator, as his car drives by. He sends his assistant Roger (Gig Young) to apologies. This becomes the beginning of a comedy of misunderstanding, misidentification, and a strange relationship between Philip and Cathy.

Although Doris Day and Carry Grant insure that this is a fun comedy, it is the bevy of other well-known actors that take this to new heights. Audrey Meadows plays the protective big sister type who hears about Mr. Shayne's exploits over the phone. Gig young is Mr. Shayne's go-for and finds out first hand what people and dogs think of him. Don Knotts is a shoe salesman as he is in another Doris day movie [Move Over Darling (1963)]. You defiantly do not want to miss the scene with Everett Beasley's (John Astin) date with Cathy.

My favorite scene is where she falls out the hotel window and is picked up. She says, "I Fell out of mister Shayne's apartment. See that I'm returned"

Goody Two Shoes and the Filthy Beast (Father Goose)

Walter Christopher Eckland (Cary Grant) A drifter, has obtained a boat from someone fleeing the oncoming war. Due to a lack of coast watchers (the "should have been" watcher getting himself eaten), Walter is pressed into service. Certain measures were taken to get him there and to encourage his participation.
On a mission to save a fellow cost watcher Walter ends up with Catherine Louise Marie Ernestine Freneau (Leslie Caron), who is escorting several schoolgirls out of harms way and was stranded. Place any man and woman on an island toss in some schoolgirls, a little liquor, snake, tie, Japanese, and you have a mixture for comedy.

I give this collection 4 stars only because it came with another DVD instead of just Father Goose. This is my all time favorite Cary Grant movie and I would have preferred that it came separate. But, you can never have too much Cary Grant. :)

Great twin Pack.......2000-05-26

ALthough I will be honest enough to say that I would have paid the same amount just for Father Goose. There are not a whole lot of Bells and whistles which you normally associate with a DVD, but the transfer was clean, so you have a nice version of the two.

Father Goose is possibly Cary Grant's best role, if only because this is not a typical Cary Grant type of Character. The story, that of a Itenerant Beach bumb who gets dragooned into service during WW II is absolutely priceless.

I Can reccommend this twinpack just for Father Goose

Note that in my previous review, in which I commented on the dreadful DVD transfer, I was only referring to the "That Touch of Mink" DVD. The Father Goose DVD is not that bad.

Indiscreet DVD in Cary Grant set is defective!.......2005-09-07

No reflection on my screen idol (or Amazon) but both sets I received include a defective Indiscreet DVD! There are visible pock marks on the DVD surface. I have to return the original set and this replacement set too. I hope this gets straightened out so I can enjoy the set in the near future!!

Defective Box Set 2 times.......2005-03-12

I like the set, however Amazon keeps shipping defective sets. You can easily see the defects. The actual discs look like they have a bad case of acne. Its always the same 2 that are unplayable. Wait until Amazon gets some that work!

All the dvd's have great quality and sound and for the price, they can't be beat. Cary Grant is in his true, classic form in all five of these movies. Men can all learn a lesson on how to be a gentleman from this guy. Timeless!!
