For all of its conventional plotting about an obsessive-compulsive curmudgeon (Jack Nicholson) who improves his personality at the urging of his gay neighbor (Greg Kinnear) and a waitress (Helen Hunt) who inspires his best behavior, this is one of the sharpest Hollywood comedies of the 1990s. Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle), but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humor), and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year), but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable, but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon

As soggy as possible.......2007-06-09
As doggone doggedly doggy as could be. There is some kind of unbridgeable cultural social divide between America and the rest of us when it comes to this type of material. What apparently seems so delightful and Oscar-worthy over there just strikes the Old World as incredibly yukky and fake. The extra star is for Helen Hunt, who did the best that could be done with the cringe-making script. Like someone said, Jack could have sleep-walked through this role; and I think he did. That cute little tyke looked female to me, but they kept calling it boy. Embarrassing.
Funny and Quirky.......2007-05-12
If you take the time to dig deep into someone's heart - you'll eventually find one! Jack Nicholson is one of my favorites...he just makes you believe he is the character he's playing! This movie makes you laugh...what's better than that!
It doesn't get much better than Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson!.......2007-05-04
What's not to like about this movie? Cuba Gooding Jr., Greg Kennear, Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson as an OCD-suffering shut-in with a penchant for saying exactly what's on his mind.
This movie renders some of the more classic lines in cinematic history, including "Sell crazy some place else. We're all stocked up here." And the ever popular "You make me wanna be a better man." There's no telling how many 16 year old boys got to go a little further with their unsuspecting prom dates after uttering that line.
The movie itself tackles a lot of social issues in a very subtle if tactful but direct manner. It was very well done and very smart in the delivery of a moral that's all about accepting the differences of those around us and living in a world where love and respect for said differences truly can conquer all.
Great Movie.......2007-03-18
I absolutely loved this movie. Jack Nicholson is at his sarcastic, nasty, and yet still loveable, best. Greg Kinnear is great as is Helen Hunt. It tells a great story and teaches a great lesson all at the same time. In my opinion the best movie Jack Nicholson has ever done.
A romantic comedy for those who don't like romantic comedies........2007-03-09
I'm not a fan of the romantic comedy genre, and I winced a bit when my wife suggested this movie, but I'd be lying if I said anything other than I very much enjoyed it.
I figured Jack Nicholson would draw me into the story. I can't say I'm a big Jack Nicholson fan, but I always seem to become quickly interested in movies that he stars in. Perhaps I'm just a Jack Nicholson fan in denial.
Helen Hunt to me is the driving force behind this movie. I do think I became a Helen Hunt fan. No denial there.
However, what makes the whole thing work is the supporting cast. Everyone is good. We've even got Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson! Then there's the dog; perhaps the cutest ugly dog ever.
Anyway, unlike others I doubt I'll watch this movie again, but I'm sure glad I saw it once. Not quite "as good as it gets" for me in terms of movies, but way way better than I thought it would be.

My Best Friend's Wedding
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon
Sleepless in Seattle
The director and stars of 1998's You've Got Mail scored a breakthrough hit with this hugely popular romantic comedy from 1993, about a recently engaged woman (Meg Ryan) who hears the sad story of a grieving widower (Tom Hanks) on the radio and believes that they're destined to be together. She's single in New York, he lives in Seattle with a young son, but the cross-country attraction proves irresistible, and pretty soon Meg's on a westbound flight. What happens from there is ... well, you must have been living in a cave to have let this sweet-hearted comedy slip below your pop-cultural radar. There's little complexity or depth to writer-director Nora Ephron's cheesy tale of a romantic fait accompli, and more than a little contrivance to the subplots that threaten to keep Hanks and Ryan from actually meeting. But the purity of star chemistry here is hard to deny, and this may be the first film to indicate the more serious and sympathetic side of Hanks that is revealed in later roles. With its clever jokes about "chick movies" and repeated homage to the classic weeper An Affair to Remember, this may not be everybody's brand of amorous entertainment, but it's got an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many a movie fan. --Jeff Shannon
The Wedding Planner
The good news is, yes, Jennifer Lopez can do comedy. In The Wedding Planner Lopez is Mary, a lovable woman who believes "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't wed, plan!" Her slapstick moments are lighthearted and she is spot-on as the controlling, compulsive-yet-sweet planner. The bad news is Lopez didn't get much of a vehicle in which to test drive her newfound comedic skills. Mary's life is her career. Planning other people's weddings takes all of her time, leaving no room for a love life of her own. Her only personal life is a Scrabble club, to which she and her father (Alex Rocco, whose wandering Italian accent is painful to listen to) belong. When a handsome young doctor (Matthew McConaughey) saves her from a collision with a runaway dumpster (really, it works), she is instantly wooed by his quiet charm. Too bad he's the fiancé of Mary's biggest client, Fran (played winningly by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), the job that will launch Mary as a partner in her firm. The main problem with this film is that no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings. Everyone is just so gosh-darn nice. In a subplot, Mary's father is trying to arrange her marriage to just the nicest Italian boy. Gee, he's sweet. Golly, Fran is nice. Is there ever a way out of this mess and to leave everyone smiling? Yet, there is a touch of old-fashioned romance to this wholesome film, which can only be described as "cute." And while things may unfold in a predictable manner, The Wedding Planner is still lighthearted fun of the sort that inspires dreamy romantic thoughts. --Jenny Brown

The best movies in one.......2002-04-29
This set of DVD's is a really good value because the movies are so good and to buy each separately, then it would be [more]... . I think that i would definatly buy this because the wedding planner is hilarious, sleepless in seattle is a cutsy romantic comedy, and the rest are also very funny/good.

A Few Good Men
A U.S. soldier is dead, and military lawyers Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee and Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway want to know who killed him. "You want the truth?" snaps Colonel Jessup (Jack Nicholson). "You can't handle the truth!" Astonishingly, Jack Nicholson's legendary performance as a military tough guy in A Few Good Men really amounts to a glorified cameo: he's only in a few scenes. But they're killer scenes, and the film has much more to offer. Tom Cruise (Kaffee) shines as a lazy lawyer who rises to the occasion, and Demi Moore (Galloway) gives a command performance. Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, J.T. Walsh, and Cuba Gooding Jr. (of Jerry Maguire fame) round out the superb cast. Director Rob Reiner poses important questions about the rights of the powerful and the responsibilities of those just following orders in this classic courtroom drama. --Alan Smithee
Easy Rider
This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. --Tom Keogh

This review refers to the Columbia Tri Star DVDs "Jack-3Pack"
Such A Deal!....Jack fans, RUN, don't walk to add this fabulous selection of Nicholson films to your shopping cart! "Easy Rider", "A Few Good Men", and "As Good As It Gets" are all outstanding films, that all include other mega stars as well, and three that span Jack's career from 1969 through 1997. The editorial reviews here will give you an excellent description of the films themselves(if by some remote chance you have not already seen any of these), so this review will concentrate on this package deal and the DVDs.
Coulmbia has put together a very nice deal. All three look and sound great. All may be viewed in widescreen("As Good As...also gives you the choice of a full screen version),and have bright, clear pictures with outstanding color. I was especially impressed by "Easy Rider", which was made in 1969.
Each DVD also gives you the choice of surround sound in 5.1 or 2.0(go to audio set-up, as they all automatically default to 2.0), and surrounds beautifully. Wait till you here that classic soundtrack from "Easy Rider"! Each DVD in their own keep case, has some special features, including commentary, interviews("Easy Rider"&"A Few Good Men"), and a "Making Of" featurette("Easy Rider").They each also include inserts, that have various info related to each film. ER may only be viewed in English, but AFGM and AGAIG, have other languages selections including Spanish and French. There are many choices on the subtitles...they are a little tricky to get to though. Other than English, I had to go through the sub-title button on my remote, I could not get them to come up just by going through the DVD menu(I never had to do this on other DVDs).And on ER..the first scene, of the drug deal, most of the dialouge is in Spanish, but there are no subtitles in this scene at all. After that, even all the great music is subtitled!
This is too good of a deal to pass up. We cannot mention prices, but if you check out each DVD individually, you will see that this package deal is the way to go.
For yourself, or a gift, for any fan of Jack Nicholson...the films, the quality, the price....It's "As Good As It Gets"...enjoy....Laurie

funny sarcastic movie.......2005-11-16
I started watching this on HBO one night mid movie and I had to get the movie to watch it from the beginning. This is a really funny movie and while I have detested other Sandler movies because I do not like stupid funny, this was just right for me. Tea Leonne is very complimentary to the Sandler Character and her mother ( don't ask me who plays her character) makes a good mix of more funny lines. The live in housekeeper and her daughter to a great degree have an excellent dynamic and make the movie - I really enjoyed it. Or maybe it's cause I'm a chick.
