Foursquare in the gritty-but-heartwarming tradition of Brassed Off and The Full Monty comes Billy Elliot, the first film from noted British theatrical director Stephen Daldry. The setting is County Durham in 1984, and things "up north" are even grimmer than usual: the miners' strike is in full rancorous swing, and 11-year-old Billy's dad and older brother, miners both, are on the picket lines. Billy's got problems of his own. His dad has scraped together the fees to send him to boxing lessons, but Billy has discovered a different aptitude: a genius for ballet dancing. Since admitting to such an activity is tantamount, in this fiercely macho culture, to holding up a sign reading "I Am Gay," Billy keeps it quiet. But his teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters, wearily undaunted), thinks he should audition for ballet school in London. Family ructions are inevitable.
Daldry's film sidesteps some of the politics, both sexual and otherwise, but scores with its laconic dialogue (credit to screenwriter Lee Hall) and a cracking performance from newcomer Jamie Bell as Billy. His powerhouse dance routines, more Gene Kelly than Nureyev, carry an irresistible sense of exhilaration and self-discovery. Among a flawless supporting cast, Stuart Wells stands out as Billy's sweet gay friend Michael. And if the miners' strike serves largely as background color, the brief episode when visored and truncheon-wielding cops rampage through neat little terraced houses captures one of the most spiteful episodes in recent British history. --Philip Kemp

Oscar-worthy in every sense.......2007-06-26
I was absolutely blown away by this movie. At first the N. England accents were really tough for me to hear w/o turning up the volume quite a bit, but then suddenly they were clear. Don't know if it was the DVD or me. I've since watched Bell in other movies, and he's incredible. This movie is extremely heartwarming. His dad and bro are tough-as-nails coal miners, and Billy likes ballet. No, he lives for it. There are people who believe in him that get him through until his family finally come around, and then dad comes around big time. The ending screwed up the believability factor a bit for me, but all in all very well done.
Powerful, Fun, Touching, and poignant.......2007-05-17
I wasn't too sure how I would enjoy a story about a 13 y/o boy but right from the start I was hooked on it. I first watched this movie when I borrowed it from a friend but I quickly knew I had to have a copy for myself. "Billy Elliot" takes place at time and place that give the story a powerful background and places it deep in to the culture of the English working class. The characters feel real, the music is great, the dancing is full of energy and the plot keeps you in the story. Billy's family is fully of love shown in the caring they have for each another and the lengths they will go to support one another. I highly reccomend this movie to anyone that likes a good ending. It is great for the whole family. Enjoy!
The Truth Will Set You Free.......2007-03-25
A wonderful movie about a boy whose family are coal miners in Ireland. This young boy wants to dance instead of following him father and brother into the coal mines. He rises above the ridicule of him family and friends and finds a mentor who helps him fulfill his dreams. What I love so much about this story is that one realizes you don't have to follow the norm in order to be happy and succeed. What we need to do is follow our hearts. I loved this movie and I believe you will too.
great performances.......2007-01-26
I really enjoyed watching this movie.Being an expat Brit.I understand the varied accents and nuances, am a fan of Julie Walters and was thoroughly entertained.
heartwarming and inspiring.......2007-01-17
makes you want to rush out and follow your dreams. Loved the bit about Billy's and his father's trip to London for the audition.

Jim Jarmusch's low-tech tribute to the 30-year-old collaboration between grunge godfather Neil Young and his favorite garage band, Crazy Horse, is both a quirky little movie and a monument to one of rock & roll's greatest noisemakers. Partially culled from some gritty archival material shot in 1976 and 1986, and supplemented by lots of super-8 footage of Young and Crazy Horse between shows while on a concert tour (the concert footage itself appears to be shot on 16mm), Year of the Horse is very much like one of the band's paradoxical performances: epic but transitory, ragged but direct, focused but improvisational. Jarmusch understands Crazy Horse and its quixotic musical quest too well to embalm them in a conventional profile-and-performance "rockumentary." Instead, he honors the off-and-on marriage of Young and the others by treating the various chapters of their lives together as shadows in time, fleeting glimpses of a brotherhood that has no secrets.
Jarmusch devotes some time to the ghosts in this film--Danny Whitten, Crazy Horse's original guitarist, and the band's late manager--then disperses them with eerie, soundless footage of black-and-white shapes that flutter off into their own void. It's the same poetic dance of light and shadow that caught Jarmusch's fancy in Stranger Than Paradise and Dead Man, but here--as with Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their musical best--it is pure in its essence, nonliteral, pouring in from some fount of raw discovery and inspiration. Exciting stuff, as are performances of band workhorses such as "Sedan Delivery" and the gorgeous "Like a Hurricane." --Tom Keogh

Would anyone...........2005-11-30
...tell Neil Young to only use the newest hightech-equipment and only record live performances where every single note is hit correctly, no crackling noises or whatsoever? No? So why hassle around with this Jarmusch-film in the above manner? His film takes a similar approach as Neil Young does with his music, Mr. Young appreciates the product, I shure do too and so should you. In case anyone hasn't noticed: it's all about rock'n roll. Nuff said.
Jim Jarmusch and Neil Young Collaborate Again.......2005-01-27
The method of Jim Jarmusch has worked, to this point, to minimalize the actor's environment as means of accentuating the spoken word. Relationships are shared usually between the audience and an intimate few; 3 (Stranger Than Paradise), 2 (Night on Earth, Coffee and Cigarettes), 1 (Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai). Banter usually focuses on juxtaposing decisions made in the past with the decisions, although often not apparent, that are to be made within the quagmire of what is routine. Transient characters use expression and subsequent argument as the auteur's mouthpiece to confront this routine. Year of the Horse is Jarmusch's exception; rockumenting the band Crazy Horse and their lead man Neil Young on their 1996 world tour.
Jim Jarmusch, after teaming up with Neil Young for the soundtrack to his 1995 film Dead Man, has collaborated with Neil again, under the guise of Shakey Pictures, Neil Young's pseudonym and label, to document Crazy Horse's Broken Arrow tour. Old tour footage (1976 tour footage was directed and filmed by One West, the 1986 footage was taken from the film Muddy Track, a Shakey Picture, directed and filmed by Bernard Shakey) is included as means of juxtaposing the band's transition in sound, set design and apparel, a testament to their consistency. The band - Neil Young (guitar/vocals), Ralph Molina (drums/vocals), Frank "Poncho" Sampedro (guitar/keyboards/vocals), and Billy Talbot (bass/vocals) - question Jarmusch's ability to capture the essence of what truly is Crazy Horse as their tenure as grunge gods with an iconic leading man cannot be easily summarized. Or can it? "Some artsy-fartsy New York director gonna ask a bunch of stupid questions and pretend like you're explaining what's been a 30-year relationship." Or can it?
As Crazy Horse's tour meanders through the United States and Europe, Jarmusch's camera documents each step of the way, the highlights of which allow the audience to witness a tour bus fight regarding the harmonies on the song Cortez the Killer, a hit off of the 1976 album Zuma. In fact, many of the references, and subsequent song and footage selection revolve around Zuma. Their 1976 tour/footage was captured while promoting the album, and the songs Barstool Blues and Stupid Girl both appear on the Year of the Horse setlist, and are played admirably well some 20 years later. Jarmusch decided to use Super 8mm film stock to capture their 1996 concert footage, an obvious testament to the raw edginess to the band's music. Behind the scenes footage is by way of interview, working as an homage to lives lost and as a celebration of continued success.
In an interview with Emmanuel Tellier from "Les Inrockuptibles" magazine, Neil intimates that with Year of the Horse "you can really feel the personal view of a film maker, and above all the movie is about the band. It's more than a simple story; it's an impression, a succession of feelings. I had the idea of doing this movie - I like this kind of stuff and I like to have a camera with me, but Jim made it possible...With Crazy Horse, we always work hard. Sometimes, people don't understand how hard it is. Jarmusch's film really shows that."
The film's setlist, like its footage, is a blend of old favorites and new(er) tracks off of the bands 1996 Broken Arrow album. Neil says in the film that he "always hated calling the band Neil Young and Crazy Horse...we together are Crazy Horse." The iconic frontman has wavered very little from his aptitude for great songwriting, leadership that has kept this grunge band in check and sounding great for over twenty years.

this is a masterpiece.......2003-08-16
One bandmate jestingly complains that some artsy filmmaker from NYC can't get to the essence of Crazy Horse (and what they've gone thru for 30 years) , but Jim Jarmusch gets as close to it as you can in 107 minutes. The band members open up, each individually interviewed in a basement with a washing machine in the background, in their hotel rooms, and on the tour bus. And the concert footage from different eras is often stunning. Some of the complaints below are essentially that the film is non-linear but these critics miss the point because this is an artists depiction of fellow artists and the artists he's depicting are masters of the psychedelic experience. It's NOT supposed to be linear. My favorite parts were Jarmusch's visual dipictions to go along with the music (far better than any MTV videos), they are simply stunning compositions, they are as true to the music as can be, they add to the music. This is a must for those into the artistic psychedelic experience. Roll one up, have a few bottles of wine, strap yourself in and enjoy the trip!
By the album instead.......2002-09-27
Although die-hard Neil Young fans will no doubt embrace every song in the movie, casual fans may become a bit bored. The song selection here does offer a few choice cuts that are not on the live Neil Young album of the same name, such as the rarely heard "Stupid Girl". And that's a good thing. However, a couple of cuts on this video, such as the the brash and tired "F*&kin Up", may make you reach for the remote.
As for the "documentary" side of things, the interviews between the songs tend to quickly become dull. Fans will learn nothing new, and casual viewers may be confused as to who these people are that are being referred to. The guitarist Poncho states snidely (and I am paraphrasing here), "You think you can learn everything about this band from this short documentary?" Then the camera cuts away leaving the viewer with nothing at all. Later in the film, he says almost the exact same line to the camera, perhaps forgetting that he said it before. The answer clearly is, "No, I won't learn very much at all from this documentary."
A saving grace for the video comes in a few short clips of documentary footage from the '70's and '80's. These clips show the band sometimes unaware of the camera, sometimes hamming it up. They're a great depiction of Neil Young and his band in their prime. They also represent everything a documentary film should be. Sadly, there are too few of these moments in this film.
The director does manage to sneak himself into the picture several times, along with the name of his production company (I think they're even in the trailer.) This should make it easier to avoid his documentaries in the future.
Buy the DVD "Rust Never Sleeps" if you want a concert movie, or buy the album "Year of the Horse" to get the music from this film instead.
Amazon betrays its buyers again.......2002-08-28
The video is fine. But Amazon's "marketplace" provider, a company in Canada, sent me a FRENCH version. When I pointed out the order had specifiec ENGLISH, they apologized for their error. Per their instructions, I return-mailed the FRENCH video June 28, almost 9 weeks ago. They claim the mail hasn't arrived and refuse to send me the correct ENGLISH version until the mail gets through Amazon won't do anything to help, nor will they let me post my "feedback" on the transaction. They claim I'm not allowed to post feedback after 60 days pass. I love Neil Young, I hate Amazon. I'll never shop here again. Watch out for the "A-Z guarantee." It's worthless. Their customer service employees probably used to work for Enron.

Customer Reviews:
Way Underated.......2006-05-27
Shredder is one of the most underated modern day B movies I have seen. The reviews that bash this movie or incorrect and untruthful. Shredder is a blast to whatch from the begginning to the end. The movie is about a group of college students that travel to an abandoned ski lodge for their break. Little did they know a killer is up there waiting to murder anyone that disobeyes the rules of the resort. Shredder is filled with many murders but what really pleased me was the variation. I don't want to see a killer only stabbing people with a single weapon, the killings need to vary and be different, thats what will keep a viewer watching. The movie also has a nude scene of a very attractive girl, but not the most attractive. Theres actually a scene in a hotub with a gorgeous girl that has zero nudity. That scene was dissapointing. Overall Shredder was a fun movie filled with killing, nudity and all the good stuff that you'd expect in a B-movie and its only $1.00, you cannot go wrong with this one.
Murder On The Slopes...........2006-02-25
Being a horror movie and slasher film fan, I enjoyed this movie. With the Death To Snowboarders theme, you expect a slasher movie and that's what we get in Shredder. The film features a group of coeds who retreat to an abandoned ski lodge. When told to leave by the local authorities, the coeds do not head the warning and decide to stay. Bad mistake! Thinking they will have a wonderful time partying, they are soon to find out that someone wants them off the slopes! They have no idea that they are not alone until the body count rises and we see a killer dressed in black who has an axe to grind! This is a good slasher flick with good gore effects. It keeps you guessing as to who the real killer is. Definetly worth renting!!!
death to snowboarders!.......2005-12-29
flawless teen slasher flick, yep folks!a great movie,i rented this flick several weeks ago.don't worry it was'nt during christmas,so i picked it up when me and my dad went into movie gallery.i was looking through a few slasher flix, and i found this one,the reason i got this one is because i saw it on the internet and it looked awsome!the movie is about a few teens, they just inherited an abandoned ski lodge.a few snowboaders, only one skier.after hearing about a past acctident they are killed off 1 by 1.decent gore as well special effects, and a poor amount of special features.overall a good flick
"Learn to drive a$#hole! A$#hole!"".......2005-09-15
My three star review was influenced greatly by the attractive Lindsey McKeon and the ultra-hot Holly Towne, who was kind enough to bless the world with a nude scene. Without them: two stars. Slasher-wise SHREDDER is about as tired, unoriginal and cliched as humanly possible, but still light years better than AX 'EM.
Some annoying teens go to an aboandoned ski lodge to shred some "virgin powder" and end up getting picked off by some mysterious skier who hates snowboarders. Absolutely no suspense and little blood.
Despite the cold weather Lindsey McKeon manages to stay in her underwear for the majority of the movie. Thank you. Also Scott Weinger, who plays the lead, is the voice of Aladdin in all of the Disney movies and video games.
A Lot Better Than The First 5 Minutes Might Have You Thinking.......2005-06-26
Not terribly original, quite predictable much of the time, and with various other little shortcomings popping up here and there, "Shredder" probably shouldn't be half as enjoyable as it is, but somehow it manages to be one of the better non-series 'slasher' type horror movies out there. Admittedly, it doesn't approach the level of the best chapters in the big ongoing series ("Friday The 13th", "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Halloween", etc.) but on the other hand it's actually Better than a number of the weaker entries in the big series. Quite a bit better, in fact.
Centering on a group of teens/early twenties characters heading up to an abandoned ski/snowboard camp for a weekend of fun who instead end up being preyed upon by a masked assailant, it misses a couple of opportunities for some more innovative (and potentially awesome) pursuit-type scenes but makes up for it elsewhere. Does manage some actual suspense more than once, and certainly manages to set itself up as a tremendously sexy movie more than once. The characters are, for the most part, kind of blooming idiots, but they're Likable blooming idiots, the kind of characters comedies featuring casts this age try for but (in my opinion) usually fall short of. Some good performances in here too.
It's kind of a hard movie to rate. If going on a ten-point scale, I could take the cynical approach and count up all the flaws and unevenness of the movie and argue it down to a six or so in spite of how well it turned it out, but who wants to be cynical all the time? Part of me keeps thinking of the best parts and arguing for a nine or at least 8.5 On a five-star scale, I think a four is appropriate. I don't know why, but a lot of what would sound like 'filler' scenes on paper just clicked and came off really good, and help the show to be worthy of a good high rating.
A couple of random thoughts: I don't always watch the 'deleted' scenes on a disc (especially on a movie that's pretty much perfect the way it is, out of fear of diluting it) but there was a bit of leeway on "Shredder" so I checked them out and they actually added to the movie - entertaining 'extended' scenes from the movie with some entertaining, seemingly ad-libbed, lines. In the main movie scene itself, the skilift scene is a highlight, a quirky little classic, but gets one thinking "why oh why don't more movies use the 'multi-camera angles option" they said they were going to when DVD was coming out, and why couldn't this have been one of them?' (still immensely cool though).
Bottom line: don't expect it to terrify you out of your wits, but don't pass it up because of that. There's a sea of movies along these general lines within its particular subgenre of horror, and a lot of them are good, but "Shredder" is, in spite of some flaws, several notches above the average. Recommended.
