A weak, lazy comedy about an easygoing teacher (Mark Harmon, whose movie career never had the kind of trajectory that his TV work did) who is forced to teach--you guessed it--summer school. What's worse, he gets exactly the kind of kids you'd expect: the losers and slackers who are forced to make up the work they didn't complete during the year. He tries to duck work and let them fend for themselves. But in this mushy Carl Reiner film, the teacher offers some life lessons to his band of delinquents and--surprise, surprise--the kids impart a lesson or two to their teacher, as well. Harmon coasts through the film on his good looks, which are considerable. --Marshall Fine

Jump roping that's worlds away from anything seen on the local playground bursts from the screen in this Disney Original Movie about the clash between two athletes and their respective sports. Boxer Izzy Daniels (Corbin Bleu) has a hard time taking neighbor Mary's (Keke Palmer) devotion to jump roping seriously, but as Izzy trains relentlessly to maintain his undefeated status and win the Golden Glove, Mary's team practices just as intensely for the city Double Dutch finals. Izzy gains a reluctant respect for Mary's sport when he accompanies his sister Karin (Kylee Russell) to a competition, but it takes some serious convincing to persuade him to fill in for a teammate who's abandon the team on the cusp of city finals. Izzy quickly discovers that Double Dutch is more demanding and rewarding than he'd ever imagined, but when the entire school finds out about his newest sporting exploit, he's taunted into quitting. As Izzy tries to regain his boxing focus, he suddenly realizes that winning the Golden Glove is more his father's (David Reivers) dream than his own. After some serious soul-searching, Izzy decides that he can't let what others think keep him from doing what makes him happy. This action-packed Disney Channel Original Movie takes a unique look at the varied world of sports and features some great catchy new music from Corbin Bleu and Jordan Pruitt, but the game-winner is its focus on the importance of following one's heart. 4 out of 5 stars Fast Food for the Soul.......2007-06-01

This DVD was a gift for my wife, who is one of the "Jump In" fans in this house. I don't have quite the enthusiasm for this movie that they do, which leads me to believe that it is something of a "chick flick."

A tight plot, engaging characters, and quick pace put this show several notches above "viewable."

I enjoyed the story of a boy learning how to deal with conflicting demands and responsibilities.

The jump-rope contest choreography is impressive, and helps make this DVD a good buy, although sports purists might question the fusion of jump-rope tricks and boxing in another scene.

Disney Studios seems to be re-discovering the bourgeois inhibitions that made it a global success, so those who require relevance, naughty words, and people with the self-control of an ADHD tomcat in their entertainment will be sorely disappointed in "Jump In." Aside from these deficiencies, this is a highly entertaining musical.

5 out of 5 stars Another great family film starring Keke Palmer.......2007-05-17

I bought this because of child actor Keke Palmer appears in it and I was not disappointed. It's such a fun film with cute actors, lots of incredible double dutch scenes and a great tutorial offered in the special effects section. It's a must have!

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-05-15

We are from South Africa, and the movie only came on our disney channel after we got the DVD, so my kids were pretty happ with themselves. It was a really nice movie, it was heartwarming, and i found it very touching. We even shed a few tears!!!My kids now want to do Double Dutch!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun family movie.......2007-05-12

This movie won't win any oscars, but it's great for what it is, a great family film. It's so hard to find movies that all of my children (ages 2-10) will sit down and watch and that WE feel good about them watching. This is one of those movies. Made in the same mold as High School Musical, I hope Disney continues to pump out these type of movies. They're slightly cheesy, but a refreshing change from many movies marketed today for kids.

4 out of 5 stars Jugendheit is not for children.......2007-06-14

Summer Storm is another coming (out) of age story with a background in sports competition, this time crew racing. It has all the elements that we have come to expect in this genre, the best friend, the fake girl friend, the first encounter, the betrayal, and then the resolution. While parts of the story line feel forced, the overall sunny tone of the film, and the compelling characters help move it along nicely. It would be nice, someday, if the subtitles reflected not only the translation, but also the meaning of the german words. You lose a great deal of the teen age patoise in the translation. It sterilizes some of the funnier interactions.

5 out of 5 stars Weather Bulletin .......2007-05-12

"Summer Storm" is a very well written German production about the lives of several teens involved in a rowing competition. Tobi, the crew captain of his team, struggles with the deep love he has long felt for his best friend Achim. He fears their friendship will be forever changed as new love blossoms in Achim's life, and can't imagine life without his constant companionship. Achim on the other hand is naive and oblivious to Tobi's feelings for him, although Tobi has tried to show him in many ways. He has vowed that nothing will ever come between their friendship, but will he still feel the same when the truth of Tobi's heart is revealed?

The team is sent to summer training camp, where they are pitted against an all-gay team of rowers. They are all forced to face their desires, jealousy, fears, pride, hidden longings and prejudice as bad weather and tough competition ensues, in and out of the water. Tobi's feelings are intensified as Achim and his girlfriend Sandra fall deeply in love and move on to the kind of physical relationship Tobi has so longed for with Achim. As he sees the openly gay team members express their desires without difficulty, the storm inside of him begins to rage.

The lead actors, Robert Stadlober (Tobi), and Kostja Ullmann (Achim) give flawless performances in their roles. Ullmanns character goes from humor, sweetness and sensativity, to anger, hurt and hatred without so much as flinching. Stadlober's performance is shining as he runs the gamet of emotion that is typical for a teen faced with the various storms of tender youth and self discovery. The casting of this film, in my opinion, was superb, without exception.

The real star of this story for me, was the character of "Leo", played by an unnamed actor. A quiet, self assured member of the "queerstrokes", Leo quickly relates to Tobi's secret struggle and is instantly drawn to him to offer support, tender affection and unconditional love. While he secretly falls in love with Tobi, he gently pushes him to self acceptance, to help him come to terms with his love for Achim and the reality he must face. The young actor who played this part, was without doubt, one of the best I've seen. He "becomes" the character he portrays, and acts with such smoothness and realism. His eyes and expression of tender emotion make it appear that he and his character are "one".

Each viewers personal feelings are well represented by at least one particular character. As you find the one you most relate to, you are sure to fall in love with at least one of them. If you like films like "Beautiful Thing", you are gonna love "Summer Storm". Sound and video quality are excellent, the storm sequences are realistic and all filmed on location in a beautiful setting to make this production top notch all the way.

The downside to this film is without doubt, the subtitles. Any film with subtitles makes it more difficult to follow, especially when the dialogue moves along quickly. It IS however a German film, with a german speaking cast, therefore the language is of course the same. So if you speak english, you will get nothing from the film WITHOUT the subtitles. It is however a film worth putting up with subtitles to view. If english speaking filmmakers would produce more films of this quality, we would not have to look to foreign films for what "Summer Storm" offers it's viewers, with the english translation.

As stated on the DVD cover, with a quote from Jan Stuart of Newsday, "They don't come any sweeter or more appealing than this". I give this film a definate two thumbs (and a couple big toes) UP!

5 out of 5 stars The storm of change.......2007-04-29

The storm, in Summer Storm, takes place when Tobi falls for his best friend and crewmate Achim. The storm only grows larger when Achim in love with his girlfriend, Sandra, and Tobi's resentment for her grows, adding tension to his friendship with Achim. Meanwhile, Anke a beautiful female crewmember is after Tobi and throw in a gay crew team and you have the making of a comic, yet moving tale of friendship and acceptance. The writing swiftly builds the pace of the film and the complicated relationships bring frustration in each character and force the clashes that occur (hence the title Summer Storm).
Robert Stadlober does a wonderful job of carefully directing this film and keeping the actors true to form. The acting is terrific in this film, especially from such a young cast, but all the actors work well with each and become one fluid picture of acceptance and denial, frustration and forgiveness. The topic of this movie, acceptance of being gay in sports, is one that many movie-makers are really starting to explore and the prejudices that occur in the locker room hasn't changed much and seems resistant to change. The winds of Summer Storm bring in a light but refreshing look at young athletes trying to discover who they are, yet finding acceptance within their athletic circle. A great movie and one I would recommend whole-heartedly.

5 out of 5 stars The storms of summer.......2007-04-20

Coming of age movies are a dime a dozen; but well told, well scripted, well directed, and well acted coming of age movies are rare. This falls into the latter group. The rare one. This was excellent.

Truly, I expected stereotypes galore. The cover of the DVD itself screams, "I'm A Gay Movie". In the opening credits, Tobi (Robert Stadlober) and Achim (Kostja Ullmann) were jumping and twisting in the air for no apparent reason, and the camera centered mostly on their crotches, showing their t-shirts as they rose above the elastic of their shorts to reveal well toned stomach muscles and hints of underwear. I thought, perhaps that's why they're jumping - to titillate. But I judged too hastily.

The film reveals its true purpose immediately: to tell a story. And we get the impression that all the skin we've seen, are seeing, and are about to see is not gratuitous, but rather that it represents the hormonal surges that the young men themselves were feeling.

We witness is Tobi and Achim in the locker rooms (boat house?) wrestling and goofing around - boys will be boys. It's noted that Tobi is aroused, and they masturbate together. Achim speaks lustily of girls, but Tobi's eyes speak only of Achim. This might be confusing to some American audiences, who would immediately assume that Achim is gay because he's doing this with another guy. Well, one of the worst kept secrets between teenage guys is that this sort of thing is not uncommon, even when both - or, indeed, all - members are straight. I say worst kept secret because straight guys never grow up and tell their wives, but gay guys grow up and tell *everybody*.

Achim has a girlfriend, who he obviously adores. Tobi, as well, has some interest in Anke, and the filmmakers leave no question about his attraction when we first meet her. Tobi is struck nearly dumb at the sight of her in a shirt that displays her, um, "figure" off quite well. Tobi has difficulty keeping his eyes above her chest. Confused he might be, but let's give Tobi this: he has great taste. Achim and Anke are both beautiful.

They are all on the same rowing team, and they are preparing to go to summer camp, where they will compete for the Cup. Tobi is excited about spending time with Achim, and your heart breaks because you can see that Achim is excited about spending time with Sandra (I think that was her name...). Stadlober plays Tobi with so much understated emotion; I never once saw him act. He was the emotional center of the film - he had to be - and he succeeded brilliantly. Achim as well was strikingly believable. Ullmann needed to show more than just affection, he needed to show love for Tobi, and yet it needed to be friendly love. He did it. Without his spot-on portrayal, the film would have been weaker.

When they arrive at camp, another team, Queerstroke, a gay rowing team, is there and Tobi's emotions, once reserved only for Achim, which, perhaps, made it OK for him to rationalize, are brought to the surface. Queerstroke has its stereotypes: a macho "straight wrangler", and a feminine guy that dices up veggies well, but they laugh at and question these, which gives us a rare look at gay men (boys, really) intelligently discussing the stereotypes in front of them, some of which are of their own making. At first there is tension when the guys from Tobi's team realize that Queer means Gay, but they all fall into a comfortable familiarity, with a few exceptions that are fun to watch play out.

But that comfort can't last long. Not when Queerstroke's "straight wrangler" is making the moves on one of Tobi's teammates, Schorsi, who abhors the thought, and Tobi's feelings, bolstered perhaps by the confident acceptance that Queerstroke displays for their sexuality, are bubbling to the surface.

The discord between the two, perhaps, serves as a metaphor for the struggle that is going on within Tobi himself. It comes to head during a storm - a summer storm. On that night, the two teams come to blows, and Tobi makes powerful realizations. While he sits under a tree, sobbing as the rain pounds his back, Achim is at the same time making love to Sandra. The camera takes us back and forth between the two scenes, and their juxtaposition is poetic.

Everything has to go right in a coming of age movie to make it work, if only because there are so many coming of age movies out there. Here we're lucky to see everything running on all cylinders. It's a gorgeous film, and even those who rented it only to see good-looking young men running about without their shirts will be surprised when they find themselves deeply moved.

SLC Punk starts out entertainingly enough as a sarcastic snapshot of the punk-rock scene in Salt Lake City in 1985--complete with mohawks, moshing, and vague avowals of anarchy. But gradually, the wanderings of Stevo (Matthew Lillard from Scream) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) turn into a multilayered exploration of character and culture shock. Though he spends his days drinking and mocking the values of his parents, Stevo turns just as critical an eye on his own rhetoric and lifestyle, and comes to find that aimless rebellion may be just as hollow as the mindless pursuit of money. No character has the right point of view; there are no easy solutions. Despite lacking anything in the way of a plot, SLC Punk sustains its energy through wit, realism, propulsive editing, and excellent performances from Lillard, Goorjian, and the rest of the cast. It's emblematic of the movie's sophistication that Stevo's lawyer father (Christopher McDonald, who played Geena Davis's husband in Thelma and Louise) is treated satirically without being dismissed; though baffled by his son's form of rebellion, he never loses hope that Stevo will go on to law school and continues to cajole Stevo and argue with him about how the world works. By its end, the constantly shifting perspective of SLC Punk achieves a surprising emotional depth. It's also given a lot of energy by a well-chosen soundtrack of energetic but not overly familiar music of the time, including selections from Fear, the Dead Kennedys, the Stooges, and even Roxy Music. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A Must See.......2007-03-10

This film, no matter what age or interest, is fantastic. The acting is excellent and the story intreaging. I found myself educated by the era of music this film encompasses. Harsh times and an attitude towards society of indipendence and self security, is what this film centers around. BUY THIS FILM.

5 out of 5 stars Such a True Movie!!!.......2007-03-08

Great film in all aspects. Shows many true aspects of society. Including a lot of comedy, helps make it an underground classic.

4 out of 5 stars This Film Is An Underground Classic...Or It Should Be.......2007-03-02

Sometimes it occurs to me with a jolting shock that I've seen a lot of films in my life. Many of these, like this one, were with my roommate in college, who was a certified movie freak. Although I forgot about it until I recently bought it for myself, one of the movies I liked a lot back circa 1999 was SLC Punk. As it rapidly segues from hilarious to touching, tragic to gross, ultimately SLC Punk shows it has a message beneath its surface noise, and it says a lot as it unfolds. At its center SLC Punk asks the question "is buying-in always selling-out?" To translate that for the uninitiated, that means is following cultural norms always a betrayal of personal identify and youthful dreams? Stevo and his best friend "Heroin" Bob (who ironically never touches drugs and is terrified of needles) are two young men living in uber-right wing Salt Lake City during the mid-Reagan years. They do their best to be hard core punks in a time and place where that pursuit separates them from just about everyone else in their Mormon dominated society. Steveo, though, is more than he seems. Amid his binge drinking, ambushing of local rednecks, and philosophical asides on the healthiness of personal anarchy, Steveo, it turns out, is a brilliant student who has the chance to get into an Ivy League college. His father, a smooth-talking Yuppie jerk, does his best to persuade his son to accept the Harvard education open to him, even as the life Steveo believes in proclaims that path to be the ultimate in "selling out." Along the way between its memorable opening scene and its closing credits viewers of SLC Punk meet a cast of characters that includes a rebel who disguises himself as a conforming prep, a trust-fund Eurotrash psychopath, a hippie Wiccan woman, and, well...one case of skin infection so bizarre it even stumps medical science. SLC Punk is worth seeing, owning, and heck, even spending ten minutes reviewing on Amazon.com. So go get it. Go get it now.

5 out of 5 stars Fun........2007-02-27

It's not the best understanding of Punk or the political theory of anarchism, but it does represent how alot of people see it.You may not even agree with the story, but it is honest...and fun.I really liked the ADD editing and the use of cool tones in the beginning, then warm, then back to cool. The description will tell you all you need to know really.

Populated by a variety of memorable characters, Daria: Is It Fall Yet? packs more intelligent humor into 75 minutes than most sitcoms manage in a full season. With its diva of the disaffected in the title role, MTV's animated series moved into Ghost World territory with this enlightening look at summer vacation, beginning with Daria's dilemma about dating her best friend Jane's ex-boyfriend. Jane's tolerating pretentious bohemians at an artists' retreat, and while Daria's playing "prison guard" at a touchy-feely summer camp, her fashion-drone sister Quinn is getting tutored to compensate for dismal PSAT scores. The razor-sharp script uses Daria's ultra-dry wit and too-cool irony (at times excessive) to skewer everything from upper-crust snobbery to the hazards of adolescent romance. It turns out Daria's outer shell protects a likable adult-in-the-making as she learns lessons that feed her heart as well as her head. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars "Turn the Sun Down": Teen summer fun cartoon with Daria........2006-09-26

I saw the preview of this cartoon on Netflix. Seeing the teen characters dancing and having fun on the beach (minus Daria, who sits by herself reading a newspaper - with interruptions), I knew I had to buy this. And I love it!

"Is It Fall Yet?" deals with the main characters' experiences during Summer vacation. The highlight: "The Tom Thing" -as Trent Lane, Jane's musician brother, nicely puts it. Daria and Tom have fallen in love, and are dating. Tom and Jane have broken up. This situation dents the friendship of Daria and Jane.

The two bonus episodes on the dvd ("Fire" and "Dye! Dye, My Darling!") show how "The Tom Thing" happened. It's recommended to watch those two bonus episodes FIRST as they lead up to the emotional turmoil and love triangle of Daria, Jane and Tom that is carried over into the movie.

Adding to Daria's anguish, her mother enrolls her to be a camp counselor at the `OK-to-Cry Corral' summer camp. Working with her are her teachers, dorky Mr. O'Neill and Anthony DeMartino (with his trademark bloodshot eyeball that widens when he's very irritated).

The other `Daria' characters have their own situations. Lovelorn Jane goes to a bohemian artist retreat that's out of Lawndale. Dim-witted lovers Kevin and Brittany provide comic relief as they both work as lifeguards at a local pool. They only have eyes for each other... and I won't go further than that. Watch the movie, and see for yourselves! Daria's spoiled brat sister Quinn and her `Fashion Club' gal pals get tutored due to low scores on their PSAT exams. (How I remember my high school days! I was a Junior when I took my PSAT exam - and passed it!) Lead `Fashion Club' member Sandi (with the deep voice) reminds me so much of Khan from Mike Judge's "King of the Hill" series. Like Khan, Sandi is often sullen-expressioned, and complains a lot!

Mack and Jodie also have their share of the `summertime blues'. Mack takes a job as an ice-cream vendor, in a truck, and has to put up with bratty kids who aggravate him as they buy ice cream. His girlfriend Jodie has her share of difficulties as she volunteers at an office, and is up to her neck in work. The pair doesn't have time to date.

I love the opening 'beach' number with the `Daria' cast frolicking on the beach... and with Daria not participating, of course. It is reminiscent of the "Beach Blanket" 1960's movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Jane, too, is seen isolated on another part of the beach, painting. Her isolation gives proof of her rift with Daria. The song "Turn the Sun Down", sung by the female band Splendora (who provide the theme song for `Daria'), is playfully catchy! Splendora sounds like the female version of the Beach Boys. The 'beach' segment concludes with the sun going down at the beach at dusk, with the frolickers still dancing...followed, in a dissolve, by the "Daria" logo in a similar 'dusk' color, with the film's title; and Splendora's melodic singing as the song concludes. This is a nice effect.

Another nice effect is in the dvd's Main Menu, with a scene taken from the opening of the `Daria' t.v. series. A somber Daria is at the movies. Her fellow moviegoers, surrounding her, are laughing at the scenes from the opening `Beach' segment. "Turn the Sun Down" is played in the background.

At the film's end, there are `Outtakes', which are cute and amusing involving the `Daria' cast. There are a few gross outtakes also included.

"Is It Fall Yet?" got me interested in the "Daria" t.v. series. To admit, Daria looks much nicer in her own series than when she was on Beavis and Butt-Head". I purchased her "Daria Diaries" and "Daria Databases" books to help me get to know the Lawndale characters. I'm presently reading her `Diaries'. And I, too, hope that the complete "Daria" series gets released on dvd in the very near future.

But treat yourself to the interesting summer experiences -- as well as the summer fun -- at Lawndale with "Is It Fall Yet?" And savor Daria's sweet smile at the near-conclusion of the opening sequence in the two bonus episodes. A little girl in the film asks camp counselor Daria "Do you ever smile??"

The answer is Yes! And this movie is sure to make you smile. It's a gem in the "Daria" series!

5 out of 5 stars Daria is it fall yet?.......2006-07-02

I love anything to do with Daria, so I'm a bit biased. For those who dont know this cartoon series. It is about an anti-social teen with a razor edge wit which means if your a person that needs clever jokes repeated to you this isnt for you. I just wish that they put the whole series on dvds instead of just the two 90 minute movies that they made from the series. If you have never herd of Daria before you will be lost if you buy either movie. This movie serves as a bridge between the second-to-last season and the last season of this series. And the sequel "Daria- Is it College Yet?" Serves as a Series finalle.

5 out of 5 stars summer dreams.......2007-05-27

When I was a kid I dreamed of owning a car as "BITCHEN" as the corvettte in this movie. Now that I watch this movie some 20+ years later I have owned much better looking and faster cars than this car. But I would love to have it even today. A great movie for its time. A bit dated but still a fun watch!

Well, Iam a 70's movie and music buff, and corvette summer fits that bill! The movie was excellent because it takes you back to the 70's with the cool cars and the nice looking ladies! Mark Hamill and Anne Potts make a perfect pair in this movie! the acting was really well done. A lot of the other actors go on and make alot of other movies as well, you will pick them out while you watch. If you like the movie Dazed and Confused, and Detroit rock city then you will like this movie! I definately recommend this movie If your a gear head and like nice cars!,( also if you grew up in the 70's!)then this movie's for you!

The dvd release of "Corvette Summer" has finally replaced my old taped vhs copy from television.Kudo's to Warner studios for releasing this classic 70's car movie on dvd. It's a barebones release as far as dvd's go,but i'll take it.The video transfer is really nice and the sound is very good. It's too bad this one wasn't in 5.1 dolby digital given it's soundtrack. No matter how many times i watch this movie,i still find it very entertaining. The story is ok and the interaction between mark hamill and annie potts characters is pretty funny.I have to admit, watching annie potts play the part of a skinny wannabe hooker is pretty hilarious. In the end this movie is really all about the car.

This is one of those great summer movies that you see as a kid and sticks with you all of your life. It's a very fun movie to watch that flows great, the movie really has stood the test of time but looking at the Corvette with today's standards the car looks really Cheesy, funny how it looked like the coolest thing when I was a kid but not anymore.

Okay, you knew everyone in high school was just a little different: everyone looked at you strangely, the teachers were freaky, and you never could find the right groove to fit into. What if it turned out that it was all because your school was inhabited by creepy aliens from outer space? That's the enjoyably cheesy B-premise for this fun and scary flick from the pen of Scream's Kevin Williamson, the master of the post-modern teen horror film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), it's The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as six disparate students from Herrington High School band together when they discover that an alien life form is invading both the student and faculty bodies, with plans to take over the world.

Each of the heroes represents a different high school type: popular babe (Jordana Brewster), picked-on geek (Elijah Wood), goth girl (Clea DuVall), sensitive jock (Shawn Hatosy), new kid in town (Laura Harris), and bad-boy rebel (Josh Hartnett). The plot isn't much--a basic kill-or-be-killed premise spiked with a healthy shot of paranoia--but Willliamson and Rodriguez do a great job of building the tension slowly but surely. The suspense set pieces are genuinely frightening, and the film pokes fun at itself without deflating its scares; Williamson is a master at shifting gears from comedy to horror quickly and adroitly. The young cast doesn't have a weak link among them (with special kudos to Wood, DuVall and heartthrob-in-the-making Hartnett), and Rodriguez gets maximum mileage from the titular faculty, which includes Jon Stewart, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick of Terminator 2. Go to the head of the class, Mr. Williamson. --Mark Englehart

When some very creepy things start happening around school, the kids at Herrington High make a chilling discovery that confirms their worst suspicions: their teachers really are from another planet! As mind-controlling parasites rapidly begin spreading from the faculty to the students' bodies, it's ultimately up to the few who are left -- an unlikely collection of loners, leaders, nerds, and jocks -- to save the world from alien domination! Also starring Robert Patrick (TERMINATOR 2), Famke Janssen (X-MEN), and Jon Stewart (TV's THE DAILY SHOW) in a great cast -- don't miss the unstoppable excitement of this unpredictably smart and scary hit!

I had forgotten about this movie and recently rewatched it. It brought back so many memories! It is everything rolled into one without ever taking itself too seriously. If your looking for a movie for pure entertainment this is the movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm allergic!"; "Yeah, and I'm Portuguese.".......2007-05-30

If you're looking for a good thriller/whodoneit type movie, this is it.

What's this movie about? Basically, a group of kids are trapped when their entire school has been overcome by "aliens". These kids are different in many ways (you have the jock, the preppy girl, the geek, the goth, the stoner, the new girl) yet, as in so many "scary" movies, they must put their differences aside and attempt to fight off these aliens, starting with the faculty.

First, let me say that this movie isn't a sci-fi type movie. It's more of a "let's guess who did it" movie (or, in this case, "let's figure out who has been overtaken by the aliens and who is the queen alien"). Why am I rating this a 4 out of 5? Because if you've seen any scary movie, this movie is nothing new. However, it stands on its own and if you like typical scary movies, I'd give this one a chance.

3 out of 5 stars got my attention.......2007-03-11

This movie got my attention and I watched it on teevee, it had good elements of Body Snatchers, The Thing, and a little Alien and a little Terminator. The acting was very good, action was very good, I enjoyed it overall. But the happy ending of everybody coming back alive and the world being good again betrayed the viscerable horror concepts that gave birth to this movie. This was fun to watch, but the axed Pollyanna ending was very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Cut From A Familiar Mold, But Better Than Most........2007-01-11

When "The Faculty" arrived at theaters in late 1998, the world had already seen it's share of over-hyped, over-dramatic and sarcastic teen horror from the mind of Kevin Williamson. Not only did we already have a "Scream," but there was a "Scream 2," as well as a corny "I Know What You Did Last Summer," followed by a corny sequel with an even cornier title. To add insult to injury, he tainted what could have been an amazing comeback movie, "Halloween H20" with his own embarassing self-referential "touch-ups" on the script. Most horror fans, including me, placed blame on Williamson for watering down the horror genre, and forcing us to suffer through a five year period of bland horror that was finally put to rest with the flop, "Valentine." However, working in Williamson's favor are two things. First, you can't blame him for "Disturbing Behavior" or "Urban Legend," as he had nothing to do with them, and second, he did deliver this little underrated gem. Together with director Robert Rodriguez, "The Faculty" was brought to the screen in a style that set it aside from it's peers and with a story that, despite lacking in the originality department, didn't feel quite as stale.

Six teenage stereotypes -- a jock, a brain, a pretty girl, a frumpy girl, a burnout, and a naive new kid -- band together when they discover that their school, and eventually their town, are being infested with an alien life-form. The teachers are more cruel and strict than before, and their parents and the police force aren't of much help either. Taking a cue from "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers," the parasites in this movie use their human counterparts as a host, taking away what made them human and using their bodies to feed their needs. It's not too long into the film that the kids wise up to this fact. When Josh Hartnett, laying it on a little to thick as the burnout character, stabs his science teacher (played by John Stewart) in the eyeball with a homemade cocaine inside a pen, a plan to hunt down the Queen, which will theoretically save everyone (aside from the few they already wasted) is devised. The movie turns into a whodunnit of sorts, but without resorting to "Scream"-esque cliches. Rest assured, there are no long-winded explanations as to what their motivations are and how they pulled it off.

One of the biggest flaws in this film would be the last fifteen or so minutes, which really degrades itself to some sort of b-movie monster flick. Needless to say, when the Queen reveals herself, it's a bit embarassing to watch. However, the movie on the whole is thoroughly entertaining. Even when it reaches into moments of cheese, it is still fun, thanks mostly to Rodriguez's expertise. One has to wonder how this guy got stuck directing a teen-horror flick in the first place. A fresh faced Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster and Clea DuVall are fun to watch in the film, but it is really the Faculty themselves who take center stage. Rodriguez alumni Robert Patrick and Selma Hayek, along with Jon Stewart and Famke Janssen, threaten to steal the show. Their portrayals of overworked, underpaid and underappreciated teachers are spot-on and couldn't be closer to reality. I swear, I've had these people as teachers growing up.

Overall, "The Faculty" is an entertaining little sci-fi/horror that you'll probably want to watch more than once. Sure, it's become a bit dated eight years later, but of all the movies of it's kind popping up at the time, I'd have to say this is the best. The DVD is horribly disappointing, however, with no special features really to speak of. Hopefully one day they'll put out a special edition, with some commentary and some insight into the making of the film.

4 out of 5 stars Puts The "Cult" Back Into "Faculty" And The "Ache" Back Into "Teacher"!.......2006-12-31

Scream-play scribe Kevin Williamson's formulaic yet satisfying suspense thriller, "The Faculty" borrows from a buffet of tried and true storylines: Williamson fills his plate with plots from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," tasty twists from his own "Scream" series, and still leaves room for heaping helpings of "The Breakfast Club," to boot.

Indeed, Williamson was no doubt the John Hughes of the 90's, his finger firmly on the (sometimes slashed) pulse of teenaged America. Recognizing a can't miss recipe when he sees one - in this case the old "take a teen from each disillusioned demographic then unite them in a common cause" trick - and adding a sci-fi spin to his already patented brand of knowingly ironic self-reference, Williamson cooks up a stylistic stew with something for everyone, even though some flavors could have used a bit more seasoning.

Elijah Wood leads the aforementioned ragtag bunch of scholastic standbys (you know 'em, you love 'em: the jock, the cheerleader, the geek, the Ally Sheedy outsider, the genius underachiever, the new girl, etc.) in a somewhat queasy quest to save their Ohio high school from an alien takeover.

Williamson's wink wink self-aware gimmicks work well in this setting, for he can once again mask his thematic thievery by having his own characters discuss his crimes: "Well how bad can stealing be if I'm admitting it?" asks the new Zeitgeist of Teen Angst. And so the somewhat-Sheedy outsider is a huge science fiction fan, thus she speaks eloquently of Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters" and the original "Body Snatchers" stories, saving us the trouble of calling Kevin on his references. Neat!

And cliched lines can't be spoken without acknowledging their triteness first. But today's trick question is - if every new sardonic screenplay calls itself out on every cliche, then doesn't that just replace the old cliches with new ones? Of course, some lines work on and of their own merits - as when one of the teens accuses Wood of impersonating the hero(ine) from another popular series of alien films.

But I digress. The real reason that all of this works so well is the person who's stirring the stolen stew - in this case erstwhile indie maestro Robert Rodriguez, of "El Mariachi" and "From Dusk Till Dawn" fame - adds enough spice with his deft direction as to make this picture quite palatable indeed. It's the little moments that most directors ignore or treat as filler that Rodriguez has fun with - especially in his slo-mo depictions of disjointedness. Watch as the librarian spookily brandishes a "QUIET PLEASE" sign as two of the teen rebellion talk strategy; laugh as you catch a glimpse of eager-beaver students in a classroom with hands raised, signalling certain disturbances in the force.

The gore is fun and "Blade"-like, with foamy death sequences that leaves seemingly carbonated corpses - another cola tie in, perhaps? - and fairly decent computerized and animatronic effects of dismembered body parts seeking to reconnect. And, as in the original body snatcher movies, Rodriguez does a great job conveying the palpable paranoia of not knowing whether your best friends and confidantes are still on your side.

Of course, that's where this entire movie works best, on the level of saccharine allegory - because, not only as teenagers but in at later stages of life, haven't we all worried about and experienced the hurt of allies switching sides and friends defecting to join our detractors? Well, this movie treats those back-stabbers with a healthy dose of eye-gouging in return, which can be quite therapeutic. What teen won't thrill at the sight of student stabbing teacher at face value? And, in the end, haven't we ever stopped to consider that the word "alien" can also mean "outsider"? So, in a way, aren't we all just aliens trying to get by? Awwww - time for a group hug!

5 out of 5 stars Still an enjoyable movie 20 years later.......2007-06-05

I never equated Summer School with anything remotely raunchy, so I was surprised to see that term brought up in the top review here in regard to this movie.

I loved watching this when it was first on cable nearly twenty years ago and I look forward to watching this again real soon. I enjoyed Mark Harmon's and Kirstie Alley's performances, and seeing the star review reminded me of Courtney Thorne-Smith's performance back when she was an unknown (I always love looking at, or thinking about, movies from the 80s and 90s and having those wide-eyed moments when you recognize someone who's very well-known today, yet you glanced over them back in the day). Dean Cameron's role as one of the main class clowns was memorable.

Even though the plot was funny and carefree, one can't help but think it's possible that kids who can't read, or who are dyslexic, or have seemingly insurmountable personal problems can't succeed if just one person or teacher took the time to show them they cared (minus the bribing - or did that help in the end?).

This is an enjoyable film that hasn't lost its touch after 20 years (wow, how time flies!). It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it, and, perhaps, a few memories for those of us who went to summer school to chuckle at. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper.......2007-02-22

Although my wife doesn't like this movie (for reasons she can't seem to articulate), I have seen this movie several times, and I laugh through it every time. Maybe I'm just ready to laugh at anything or maybe I'm just a Mark Harmon fan, because I haven't seen any of his movies that I don't enjoy. I recommend this one with the caveat that its humor may be too slapstick for some.

5 out of 5 stars "Happy that the world is upside down".......2007-02-14

"Summer School" surprised a lot of critics by bringing something new to a genre most people had already had enough of by the time of its release (1987). With a spunky screenplay and Carl Reiner's gift for comedic timing, the film fills in a gap neglected by the majority of the decade's other high school pics, whose styles were polarized between the rebellious, goofy sexcapades found in John Hughes' brat pack series, and more "mature," galvanizing films like "Stand and Deliver."

"Summer School" begins with Danny Elfman's song "Happy" playing as the clock counts down and students prepare for summer. Reiner himself portrays usual summer teacher, Mr. Dearadorian, who happens to win fifty thousand dollars in a scratch off lottery just as the last bell rings. His boss, Vice Principal Phil Gills (Robin Thomas) tries to tell him there is no Island, but he quits anyway.

Gills approaches Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon), a gym teacher who is ready to spend the summer in Hawaii with his girlfriend -- "We got leis on and everything." Gills threatens his tenure, so he decides to stay. Shoop tries to get his girlfriend to stay by quoting "There's no place like home." She says she understands and will just go without him.

Mr. Shoop's class is made up of group of slackers and misfits who for a variety of reasons failed the English skills test required to graduate.

There are: Dave and Chainsaw, an inseparable pair, one is obsessed with Chainsaw, the other with the film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; There's Alan, the black-sheep of a genius family; Anna Maria, a buxom foreign exchange student brushing up on her English skills; Pam House, a spaced-out surfer girl with a thing for Mr. Shoop (I think it's funny the DVD's "Set-up" menu features a picture of her); Kevin, a football player kicked off the team for "being stupid"; Jerome, who spends most of the film in the bathroom; Rhonda, who is pregnant with either Sean Penn or David Lee Roth's child, Denise, a bad driver who suffers from dyslexia, and Larry who sleeps all the time because of his night job.

At first Shoop doesn't take his job seriously and takes the class on field trips to the beach, go-kart races, and theme parks. Then Dave and Chainsaw almost get arrested for drinking on the beach. Mr. Shoop says the booze was his, and gets arrested. Gills tries to fire him, but Dave and Chainsaw put on a Grand Guignol classroom show that scares away the replacement teacher, and the students demand Shoop returns. I'm probably revealing too much plot info here, but I mainly just wanted to note the blood and guts classroom scene doesn't seem as funny now in wake of all the school shootings. Though I know if I hadn't have made splatter films in high school I probably would've blown up the school, so maybe the film will help some people.

Anyway, Shoop seeks the aid of Robin Bishop (Kirstie Alley), who is teaching honor students who are spending their summer voluntarily in a classroom nearby. He likes her. She eventually likes him, even though she's seeing Gills.

Everything turns out okay in the end as you'd expect from this type of film; what's different is that there aren't any real bad guys, just a lot of miscommunication. Gills is presented in the worst light, but even he is spared the humiliation that similar characters in this genre of films usually receive (Ferris Bueller's Ed Rooney for example.) Here, Gills just loses the girl because he's intolerant and inflexible. Shoop and his students learn how to adapt.

Before "Summer School," I always resented Harmon for ruining the TV show "Moonlighting," but now I realize it's probably due more to the show's creators having a brain freeze after David and Maddie said two dirty words and finally slept together. "Summer School" was Harmon's first role after his "Moonlighting" appearances, and it's probably his most memorable and endearing (unless you like Ted Bundy).

There are a few dated references -- for instance, Dave and Chainsaw sing Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" and Rhonda mentions Sean Penn's marriage to Madonna -- but the film should still entertain audiences young and old - it even includes an homage to "From Here to the Eternity," with Shoop and Robin kissing on the beach, joined by Shoop's dog, Wondermutt, and his favorite toy, a stuffed doll's head named Bob.

Not nearly as raunchy as some of the other teen exploitation films that came out around the same time, Summer School is a feel-good movie in which all the characters are clueless, but also kind of likeable for some inexplicable reason. Mark Harmon stars as Freddy Shoop, a lazy physical education instructor who is forced by his nemesis (aka The Principal) to teach summer school. He's not lucky enough to get the overachiever kids who attend summer school because they want to; Shoop gets the students who have to attend because they've failed. As you might expect, his class is full of lazy losers who don't think of summer school as real school. Actually, Shoop kind of agrees with them. He's not as irresponsible as he would have them believe, although he's not above bribing them to do their best. Released theatrically in 1987, the film stars a very young Courtney Thorne-Smith (Melrose Place, According to Jim) as one of the students. And Kirstie Alley (Cheers) appears as Shoop's love interest. Directed by Carl Reiner, Summer School has an almost innocent feel. It's the silly movie trying to pass itself off as naughty, but really it's not. Summer School was released before filmmakers knew they needed to save good outtakes and bloopers for DVDs, so the special features aren't all that special. The most appealing is footage of some of the cast members while the film was being shot. But if you're curious about listening to the audio commentary offered by Harmon and Reiner, take a pass. Though both men are charming on talk shows, neither is particularly insightful here. --Jae-Ha Kim

4 out of 5 stars Its hard to teach summer school.......2007-05-30

The kids minds on other things and people, like learining to drive, gving birth, learning to read again and so on!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome classic..........2007-05-12

Great classic, with some awesome stars in it. Truly a defining movie of the 80's period.

You'd think moviemakers would have run out of new ways of capturing the trials and joys of young love--but director David Gordon Green finds a fresh take in All the Real Girls, a bittersweet small-town romance. By leaving out the usual humdrum exposition of a courtship story, Green cuts right to the little moments that form the high and low points of a budding relationship. It's an impressionistic style aided by the wonderfully spontaneous and unpredictable acting of Paul Schneider (who also co-scripted) and Zooey Deschanel--who look like they're improvising, even though they're not. As in Green's excellent debut feature George Washington, a small town serves as an atmospheric backdrop--this place looks a couple of decades shy of the 21st century. The mosaic approach makes the film play like a collection of memories, someone's first love recalled with fondness and just a bit of regret. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars alright...........2007-05-13

Intresting movie but it kinda gets slow in parts. Shipping wise it came fast and in perfect condition.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly simple and ethereal.......2006-11-30

All the Real Girls is a refreshingly simple story about first love with a fittingly ethereal approach to its subject. The film is about the relationship between Southern small-town Romeo Paul (Paul Schneider) and inexperienced Noel (Zooey Deschanel). An indiscretion mars their romance and some soul searching by Paul follows.

There is much to like about Schneider and Deschanel's performances, which are poignant, sad, and naked. It is especially nice to see Deschanel in a larger, more grounded role than her usual quirky supporting roles. Director David Gordon Green drops you right in the middle of Paul and Noel's courtship but reveals his characters slowly. The seemingly improvised dialogue and long cuts brings to mind Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, but less witty and talky, more emotionally raw. Some will be turned off by the film's meandering narrative structure and visual style, which has been called impressionistic (it feels more crafted than that). Indeed, Green tries hard to be unconventional and poetic, at times coming across as esoteric. But it will be thoroughly absorbing to those who want a more evocative kind of film; plus it feels pretty darn close to first love.

1 out of 5 stars Some films should just be pitched over a cliff.......2006-02-26

This movie is a long, slow, earnest melodrama about small town twenty-somethings struggling to...you know...find themselves...get somewhere...grow up...ah, hell, I have no idea, really. The movie is shot so that we are stuck in that eternal autumn that permeates most small-town melodramas. All oranges, browns, and golds. The characters meander through their lives with little direction and no visible means of support. There's a factory which none of the characters seems to work in. Zooey Deschanel plays a very confused girl who is a virgin when she starts dating Paul Schneider. Schneider is a player (that's right, all of a sudden there are at least two babes in this town that we see Schneider has, erm...pleasured. They wear professional makeup and have their hair done in New York. Or at least that is what it looks like.) He falls for Deschanel and doesn't screw her because he's a changed guy. It's his new self. So what does Deschanel's character do? She does a bad thing at a weekend party at a lake. The whole rest of the film is devoted to the pain and inchoate ramblings of Schneider and the rest of the cast, all of whose lives seem to be hopeless and in need of repeated doses of stiff, tough-sounding and superficial philosophies which, it appears, everyone can spout. Nothing like dead-end stultifying, small-town life to make a person into a wise man. The worst are the virtually tongue-tied ramblings of Deschanel. While there are moments of dimmed insight in this movie, for the most part it is self-indulgent and plodding, filled with little meaningless scenes that give it an art-house feel. Deschanel is fine as the wounded/wounding girl, Schneider is stiff, pasty, and dull as the boyfriend (he also wrote the story). He looks way too old for Deschanel which, apparently, he is.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes Love Hurts.......2006-02-11

A Beautifully love storie in real real terms with the proper ammount of infatuation, love, pain and love after the pain, really touching "real girls" in this film is more than just an adjective or a tittle for this picture and Zooey Deschannel is the owner of the kind of personality that fits in such description with a natural charisma, some sort of intellectual charm and a beauty just a few girls have, dont miss this one if you like independent films.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewers're missing one crucial thing.......2006-01-24

I won't bog down w/ specifics, as past reviewers have already shared their comments. But as someone below said: in a lot of cases it's a "love it or hate it" film. That aside, I was taken by the beauty of the picture sequences, along with the actors' ability to convey their emotions.
But perhaps the most important thing a lot of folks are neglecting is the soundtrack! It's excellent, featuring a host of discreet bands. Pyramid, Mogwai, and , and Sparklehorse, to name a few.
Do yourself a favor and at least check it out.

Being the object of three teenage girls' affections may be some men's secret fantasy, but Keith Clark (David Boreanaz) finds it's more than he can handle--or live up to--in These Girls. Keith is the type of guy who doesn't work, but needs a babysitter to look after his infant when his wife is working. He and the 17-year-old sitter begin an affair, which goes smoothly until her two best friends catch her in the act. Literally. Not content to just hear about their friend's sexual exploits, the two separately decide to have sex with him as well. One seduces him. The other, a religious tattletale, blackmails him into taking her virginity. Billed as a comedy, These Girls has none of the humor of American Pie or the sweetness of Tatum O'Neal's coming-of-age film, Little Darlings. Mean spirited and full of unlikable and unbelievable characters, the film leaves viewers longing for the days when Boreanaz wooed Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. --Jae-Ha Kim

4 out of 5 stars Just like real people!.......2007-06-22

I bought this movie for David Boreanaz and enjoyed it very much. As for the plot, I think it's more realistic than you might imagine, and not nearly so bad as some of the stuff that actually goes on in the real world. I certainly don't think the characters are awful people, just flawed like most.

As for the actors, of course, I think David Boreanaz was great, though I could have done without the do-rag (not sure how to spell that) on his head. I thought Caroline Dhavernas was great in her part and has beautiful eyes. The other two were good actors, though I found their characters a little bit annoying. The baseball freak/7th Day Adventist was a real hoot.

4 out of 5 stars bad decisions can get worse sometimes.......2007-01-15

David Boreanaz stars as Keith Clark, belongs to some sort of biker gang & I'm not overly sure what his real job is but it's not overly important. Amanda Walsh(Canadians would know her as a VJ from Much Music) plays Glory Lorraine, who is the first to fall for Keith's "charms" & starts sleeping with him behind his wife's back. but then it gets worse, not only does she think she's in love with him but her friend, Keira(Caroline Dhavernas) sleeps with him as well. & then her other friend Lisa(Holly Lewis) decides she wants to sleep with him too to get herself pregnant. & then they all start telling each other that their sleeping with Keith without knowing their friends are also doing him. & after a long fight they slowly decide to start sharing and blackmail him to make sure he doesn't back out. I have to say, David is definitely willing to try new things here! his character is very twisted and dark, he has alot of shame in sleeping with these girls while he's married but does nothing about it. well, in the end he tries to find a way out of it but it only backfires as he gets what's coming to him. this film is silly, at times way too cheesy for its own good. lots of things don't make sense, there's no real lesson in the entire thing and I'm not sure why Keira has a change of heart at the end of the movie. it just seemed so random & stupid. this movie is sinful, funny, cheesy & I think overall, it's worth a viewing!

1 out of 5 stars Go with the editor's review!!.......2006-12-11

After reading the editor's review I was ready to dismiss this movie even as a huge Buffy / Angel / Bones fan. Then I read all the other reviews and reconsidered. Editors often pan movies I end up liking, so I thought I'd try it. I'm actually somewhat surprised that I didn't just give up halfway through. This movie was terrible. The plot was idiotic, the three girls annoying, and it wasn't worth watching even to just see David on the screen. Go with the editor's review and stay away - especially if your a Boreanaz fan! What bet did he lose to be forced to do this role?!?!

5 out of 5 stars I will admit.......2006-11-28

That I bought this movie orginally to see David Boreanaz naked. I am very glad that I did. It is a very funny comedy that was a bonus of David's nice tush in the movie. If you have ever been a baby sitter in your life, you will get a hoot out of this one.

3 out of 5 stars Review of These Girls.......2006-08-08

This movie is fun and holds your interest. It is a kind of shoe is on the other foot where the girls are in charge. What they come up with in sharing a guy is really good. You can't help but like the girls and their choice of who to spend their summer with is one most of us would make. If you like David Boreanaz you will like this movie.
