When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in First Wives Club, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous Showgirls. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though costar Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) should have known better than to take it seriously. --Tom Keogh

This film has the worst acting ever. That's probably what makes it so entertaining to watch. The costumes and the dancing are very entertaining and the plot is pretty ridiculous. The VIP set is great with the shot glasses. Definitely a movie you need to see at least once.

Plan 10 From Las Vegas.......2007-04-26

Plan 9 From Outer Space was worse than this steaming pile, but they didn't have the lavish budget to waste that this one did.

Every show biz cliche imaginable is dragged out, but in such a clumsy, trying-but-failing-to-be-manipulative way, that your jaw drops to the floor, and you are entertained, almost against your will. Also, there are really spectacular dance scenes, and lots of female flesh for the eyes to feast on.

But the story and the dialogue and the direction are stupid. The red haired actor who plays the choreographer also played the Wig Master for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on an episode of Seinfeld. Kramer somehow misses seeing the show and as consolation, is allowed to walk down Broadway wearing the Tecnicolor Dreamcoat. He is then mistaken for a pimp and arrested. Perhaps that whole sequence was intended as an homage to Showgirls, and one can only wish that Joe Esterhauz could have been arrested for pimpin' this ridiculous movie.

One Of The Most Erotic Movies Ever Made. (IMHO).......2007-03-04

Showgirls is one those movies that has been paraded with awful reviews "Woofs" and just plain hate. I really don't understand why this is. Showgirls is about a beautiful young woman named Nomi(Elizabeth Berkley), Who decides to try her luck and hitchhike to Las Vegas to become a dancer. She gets a ride to vegas and befriends a young woman named Molly, Molly then helps her get a job a smalltime strip-club she works at doing make-up and such. Nomi then realizes that she wants more than this. She then auditions for a popular show called "Goddess", Nomi then becomes a surprising success. And many other entertainings happen during the film. The movie is filled with non-stop nudity witch helps the film to become very erotic. You will get an eyefull of the naked body of Elizabeth Berkley, Who you probably used to watch on "Saved By The Bell". The storyline is surprisingly good,The acting is also excellent.

If you have a problem with nudity and the subject of "Rape" I wouldn't recommend this. But if you appreciate the female form and don't mind a little violence I would MOST defenitly recommend this.

All in all this movie deserves a 10/10.

Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) is a beautiful traveling girl who is desperate for a job in Las Vegas. She gets a new home thanks to a new friend named Molly (Gina Riveria) for she gets a job as a dancer at the Cheetah club, one night a talent agent finds her for he decides to have her as a part of an erotic stage show at the Stardust called "Goddess" where she meets the big star known as Cristal (Gina Gerhshon). James (Glen Plummer) is a free-style man helps Nomi as he teaches her the right dance moves to become a top dancer when the rivalery between her and Cristal has begun.

Very entertaining sleaze epic from Paul Verhoeven ("Total Recall", "Robocop", "Basic Instinct" and "Starship Troopers") has non-stop nudity, clever dialog, sex and over the top acting. There's plenty of good eye candy through the many gorgeous girls prancing nude especially Ms. Berkley who really shows off her stuff for the camera.

The DVD has good picture and sound with a couple of good extras like the trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette, this is an enjoyable erotic flick if you can suspend your disbelief.

I know this movie gets a lot of crap but you know what? I love it and all its smutty terribleness. I've seen it about a hundred times on tv with all the bad stuff cut out so I finally decided to go ahead and buy the damn thing so I could get the goods! and boy was it worth it. I laughed soooo hard. If people were that spastic at sex everyone would be walking around with bruised groins. Despite the bad acting and script, I can't help but love it.

Fascinating.......2007-07-01

It's just fascinating how bad this film truly is. I just caught it again the other nite on cable and whats remarkable is that directing credit went to Jay Jansen(on t.v.). But, obviously, everyone knows Paul Verhoeven directed the theatrical release. The t.v. version isn't any worse than the theatrical release, so I don't understand Paul Verhoeven taking his name off the credits. This film just sucks through and through. Avoid it at all costs, watch it for free first, then decide.

Here is what is on this thing... .......2007-06-29

If you previously bought the SHOWGIRLS VIP edition - this is the exact same disc only packaged without the box and all the trinkets that came with that edition. You get commentary by a guy who is a fan of the movie and helps host late night screenings, the Scores girls talk about stripping and critique those sequences, and there's an old promotional piece made during shooting that is called "A Diary". The transfer is good and the extras are fun, though none of them seem to cover anybody associated with the film. If you did not purchase the glam deluxe box set this is a cheap way to get all those features without hunting it down. Otherwise if you have that edition, this is merely a double dip and repackaging of the same disc with new cover art.

This is the NC-17 cut and no additional material has been added. If you have that edition already there is no difference in the movie at all. There are no deleted or extended scenes. This is the version shown in theatres and released twice before on DVD.

SHOWGIRLS begs for better extras. I would love to hear a director's commentary or Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon talk about the film. But that hasn't happened yet. Maybe one day we can hope for a Criterion edition and all the stops will be pulled out!

YES!!!!!!!!! This has got 2 be one of the best films in movie history. I dont care if the critics TRASHED it. They just dont know what a master piece this movie is. It has everything you need comedy, drama, & great dancing. I cant wait 2 get this FULLY EXPOSED edition. Hopefully it will have extended & deleted scenes added in. Commentary by Elizabeth Berkeley etc. These are things i hope are ADDED IN!!!!! WOOOHHOOOO!!!!!!

This is one of the better stripper videos I've seen, with some caveats. It's full of gorgeous and sexy women who know how to dance erotically. There's one scene in particular of three dang sexy girls playing with each other on stage that will melt you in your chair. With an exception of one segment, the camerawork is very good too, not overly manipulated or too artsy like some Playboy videos are. I do wish that there were more full-length stripper acts, though, since some segments are just parts of acts, and the length of the DVD is rather short at about 50 minutes. I should note too that two segments are not stage acts, but are set elsewhere. As, one segment has a woman stripping for a man with the two of them alone in a home. Overall, this DVD is very enjoyable, so I sure hope it's not out of production because that would be a shame.

I own almost every penthouse dvd and this will be the first of many I will try to review...Let me start by saying that I usually buy Penthouse videos because they show a little more "skin" than (other) video...So a majority of my ratings on this type of DVD will be on the amount/content of the(skin) shown...This DVD is a collection of various "exotic" dancers...Each girls segment is basically divided into two smaller segments...First, a typical penthouse "centerfold clip" of the girls in various degrees of undress and then live footage of the girls as they perform onstage in front of a live audience...As usual, I found the girls to be very beautiful...I found the "centerfold clips" to be very hot and the best part of the DVD...The live footage of the dancing was rather bland and I feel could have been done better if they included more "intimate" shots...I rated this DVD a 3 because I have seen better productions from Penthouse.

It is rather amazing to consider how many other films resonate in "Showgirls," the NC-17 film where the film was never equal to the hype. You have the chorus girl wanting to be a star plot line that goes back to "Morning Glory" and beyond, the back stage back biting of "All About Eve," the stylized sexy dancing of "Flashdance," the dancing auditions of "All That Jazz" and "A Chorus Line," the sleazy showbiz world of "Valley of the Dolls," the Las Vegas Glitz of "Oceans 11," the falling down the stairs from "Kiss of Death," the woman taking vengeance on her own angle of "I Spit on Your Grave," and the naked dancing women of "The First Nudie Musical." This list is enougth to convince me that what ever else it might be, "Showgirls" is not a "message" film.

I know the film is now considered a camp classic rather than a mega-bomb, but neither description rings true for me. Nor would I consider the movie to be erotic, although I have no doubt that every lap dancer in the United States would resent the performance Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) puts on for Zack Carey (Kyle MacLachlan) while Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon) watches and wishes for her own turn in the chair. The scene in the pool is not bad, but it sure seems like all the brief scenes between Nomi and another woman have more heat than any of extended scenes with her and a man. Go figure. Besides, the idea of a putting out a big buck soft porn film is rather oxymoronic because those who find "Showgirls" to be a sexy film were never going to want to go to the local Cinemaplex to watch it; they were going to want to watch it in the privacy and comfort of their own home (it is not like those people were going to ever be able to get a date to go out and see this film).

In the featurette on this DVD Joe Eszterhas takes time out from laughing all the way to the bank and back to tell us that "Showgirls" is really nothing more than a rock and roll musical, which makes sense except for the fact that the music is not exactly rock and roll and everybody is dancing rather than singing, which would make it some sort of ballet. But the idea that the film is a musical is worth considering because it is a simple way of explaining why Paul Verhoeven was the wrong director for this film. Verhoeven's approach is more than voyeur than the auteur and for the most part he does little more with the camera besides point it at the actors while they dance/writhe around (i.e., exactly what he did when Sharon Stone and Leilani Sarelle were on the dance floor together in "Basic Instinct"). I have to think that any director of a second level MTV music video could have shot and cut this film to much better effect. Then again, what better way of defining what is sexy in movies than to say that there is nothing in "Showgirls," with its totally naked star, to rival Sharon Stone totally dressed (almost) in "Basic Instinct."

I do want to add that I do not think "Showgirls" is going to destroy Elizabeth Berkley's Hollywood career. All you need to do is to remember that Jessica Lange did a lot more than merely survive making "King Kong" and you have to think the actress will survive having bared everything (repeatedly) in this film. Berkley certainly turns in an earnest performance, and when she talks in the featurette about working hard so that the stripping was more like dancing than stripping per se, you have to agree that is an accurate description of what we see on screen. Ultimately, it is that the story is emotionally hollow. Nomi keeps insisting she is a dancer and not a whore, but it takes the entire film for her to learn these two things are not mutually exclusive.

Besides the fact that we are supposed to root for the nobody to become somebody in stories like this, there is no reason to even feel sorry that Nomi does not understand this obvious point. Our sympathies are more with her friend Molly (Gina Ravera), the costume designer, and James Smith (Glenn Plummer), the down on his luck dancer-choreographer, who cross Nomi's path. The film ends in a series of melodramatic showdowns at odds with the rest of the film and the final scene provokes the sudden suspicion that "Showgirls" was all one big joke. But maybe the fact that most likeable character in the film was stripper comedian Henrietta Bazoon (Lin Tucci) was a big clue. Then again, maybe there is not more here than meets the eye; maybe there is less.
