If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary Duff, who fared better in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but manages to salvage her mainstream appeal in a comedy for which "cute" is not necessarily a compliment. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Meet high school student Sam (Hilary Duff), who scrubs floors at a diner, copes with her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and all the while dreams of Princeton (the perfect spot for a would-be princess to find a prince). But maybe she has a Prince Charming already: her anonymous e-mail buddy (Chad Michael Murray), who arranges to meet her at the Halloween dance. Sam panics when Mr. Anonymous turns out to be the coolest guy on campus. Can he love a girl who isn't part of the in crowd? Can fairy tales come true? Sure - but only if Sam stands up for herself and turns her dreams into reality.

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh

Description

A "modern" young woman of the 16th century, Danielle (Barrymore) is as independent and wise as she is beautiful and kind. Against remarkable odds, she stands up to her scheming stepmother (Huston) and works miracles on the lives of everyone around her, including the crown prince of France (Dougray Scott)! Now you can relive this captivating, contemporary retelling of the classic fairytale.

5 out of 5 stars I will love Ever After forever after.......2007-06-29

This is the kind of movie you will watch over and over again with your daughter or your grandchildren (or by yourself on a day you need some cheering up). A time-honored story, beautifully done, and updated just enough--but not contemporized (thank goodness).

5 out of 5 stars First there was "Pride and Prejudice" then "Ever After".......2007-06-29

"Pride and Prejudice" was the original formula: 1. a smart whitty character with a sharp tongue offsetting a royal admirer 2. A champion, who extends mercy and deliverance 3. A fairtale marriage to Prince Charming 4. They live happily ever after

The Cinderella story is more intriquing because the central character brings moral issues too the big screen: 1. Recognition of the middle and lower class rights - power resides with the people, not the rulers 2. the vices of involuntary servitude - bondage is abominable 3. the attractiveness of free thought and opinion - the mind is beautiful 4. Intellectual class fits with the wealth class (wealth, values, and religion) difference must be dealt with 5. Beauty overshadows poverty (commitment, passion, and intimacy) 6. Liberty is more compelling than power. (inalienable rights of man - philosophy of law) 7. Love transcends tradition. (Faith, Hope, Mercy, Love, Glory, and Beauty)

4 out of 5 stars Ever After, A Cinderella Story.......2007-06-29

A new twist on "Cinderella." Drew Barrymore, a peasant servant, impersonates a Countess to plead for the freedom of an imprisoned servant bound for The Americas. While winning his freedom she meets the Prince who is curious about her resolve and conscience. He begs for her name, and the rest is an inriguing courtship. The prince is tested throughout - is he good enough for her?- and ultimately, do they live "Happily Ever After?" Overall a great lesson for the kids about morality and justice and strength through adversity, and a fun romance for adults. As a mom of four kids under thirteen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars a real cinderella.......2007-06-27

So you want a fluff story about Cinderella? This ain't it. She knows how to use swords, works herself crazy, and even throws a punch at her stepsister. Finally a version of Cinderella for modern times. Drew Barrymore shines. Wonderful characters at every turn. A sharp, fun movie to watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Best Romantic Movie Ever.......2007-06-09

This film is GREAT. it makes in my openion the rather boring story of cinderella into a fantastic love story. it is the type of film that you could watch over and over and over again. simply GREAT!

An entertaining story for Hillary Duff fans...or not. Purchased as a gift for twin 10 year old girls who enjoyed the movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of The Cinderella.......2007-06-20

I first watched this movie when it came into theatres, and I actually talked my friends into watching this instead of another movie, which was a hit thriller.

The main reason why I chose this over the other movie was not because of the cast members. Though i admit that I admire the beautiful Miss Hilary Duff and Mr Chad michael Murray as many teenagers do out there(hey! I'm only sixteen myself!), I watched the movie because I was attracted by the story.

Cinderella is one of my favourite fairytales since I was a kid, and I am really glad that it's made into a comedy telling the story of a girl. A Cinderella Story illustrates many aspects of lives of teenagers; family, school, friends, part-time job... and it's shouting out to every teenager out there: never give up. Cling onto your dreams. Eventually, everything will be alright.

Fairytales are like dreams of every person out there, no matter you are a kid or you are an adult. Many say that they are like perfections that don't exist. Well maybe they don't. But if you really look and you really try to see, they are there, waiting for you to explore.

I found this to be an excellent telling of the Cinderella story. I like everything that I have seen Drew Barrymore in.

5 out of 5 stars One of THE Best movies, ever!.......2007-01-26

The whole family watches this movie often and it never gets old! Even my husband loves it!

5 out of 5 stars Forever Wonderful.......2007-01-14

The best Cinderella story ever told, this version stars Drew Barrymore as Danielle De Barbarac. She is smart, poised, and a bit of a socialist. And she meets Leonardo da Vinci. And, of course, there is a prince.

5 out of 5 stars Best Take on the Cinderella Story Ever.......2007-01-12

One of Drew Barrymore's best roles (so far). You don't have to be a Drew Barrymore fan to love this movie. Not too adult for kids, and adults will appreciate the heroine's travails and trimphs, since she depends on her own brains and strength to overcome obstacles. Good characters surround her - the acting is first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella Revisted.......2007-01-10

Ah, what can be said about this film? A LOT....

It is, first and foremost, a retelling of the classic tale of Cinderella, but infused with historical fiction and factual characters.

You've read the plot points above, and I don't need to go over them again... The movie, however, is spectacular...! The acting is just about top notch, with excellent performances by Drew Barrymore (as Danielle, aka Cindersoot/Cinderella) and Dougray Scott (as the crown prince of France, Henry). Exceptional is the word to describe Anjelica Houston's performance as Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent, the "evil" step-mother.

Great performances are turned in by nearly all the supporting characters, including an interesting twist on the "evil" step-sisters, Maguerite and Jacqueline... But in this retelling - only one of the sisters is truly mean and spiteful - a vengeful witch of a girl... Jacqueline, however, being somewhat plainer than her blond bombshell of a sister, is far more accepting of Danielle and others as the story unfolds.

Also a surprise is Richard O'Brian (of Rocky Horror and Shock Treatment fame) as an evil and covetous local baron/lord who sets his sites on Danielle and won't take NO for an answer - until he's threatened with becoming skewered by Danielle...

A truly humorous scene is the wedding of Prince Henry is just about to wed a wailing and thoroughly unhappy princess of Spain - who sobs and cries and wails throughout the ceremony - also lamenting that she cannot marry the one she loves, and is, instead, forced into a royal arrangement between her parents and Henry's parents.

The film is also peppered with great lines of dialog that are delivered with precision and the proper tone, right down to Baroness Rodmilla demurely asking how long she may have to live, after her treachories are discovered.

With inputs from Leonardo da Vinci, the King & Queen of France (Francis and his wife), and a band of Gypsies, not to mention the household staff of Danielle's familial home, we get the "Happily ever after" ending we all love and care about...

In the tiny kingdom of Euphrania, the King and his court are most anxious to get Prince Edward wed. But Edward wants to marry for love. Meanwhile, young Cinderella finds life drastically altered with her father's death as she's forced to be a servant in her own house. But a cheery fairy godmother helps her with her impossible tasks, and even gets her to take an evening out at the King's bride-finding ball. But when the magic wears off, and the prince with shoe-in-hand searches for Cinderella and finds her, what is going to happen to Euphrania without the needed marriage alliance to prevent war? The Slipper and the Rose is a grand musical adventure in the tradition of The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. This lavish production features Richard Chamberlain in a spirited retelling of the classic Cinderella fairy tale, and the Academy Award-nominated score is provided by the Oscar-winning song-writing duo the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). The Slipper and the Rose is a brilliant mix of fantasy and realism that will enchant viewers of all ages. No musical collection would be complete without this romantically delightful film. Directed by Bryan Forbes (The Stepford Wives, King Rat). This is the complete, full-length version.

--Tom Keogh

    Description

James J. Braddock was born in a small flat on West 48th Street in New York City on June 7th, 1906. Born in Hell's Kitchen to an Irish immigrant family in 1903, destined to raise a family during the depression, life was not going to be easy for Jim Braddock. His struggles and torments honed him into a fighter, one who would go on to be the Heavyweight Champion of the World, shocking fans and critics alike. "Cinderella Man: The Real Jim Braddock Story" explores the roller coaster rise and fall and rise again of Jim's life. He fought hard to earn his recognition as a fighter, and then had it all taken away when he, and the rest of the country fell into hard times during the Great Depression. More than a great tale of boxing, this is an underdog tale of Jim's tireless drive to succeed. "Cinderella Man: The Real Jim Braddock Story" recounts how Jim worked back-to-back double shifts to feed his family, and still went on to fight when the rare opportunity would come along, during the turbulent twenties. His inner fortitude became a ray of hope for the rest of the nation. Included are recounts and opinions from some of the most renowned boxing historians and Jim Braddock experts, like Burt Sugar, expert and author who has appeared in Boxing Insider, David Margolick, contributing writer at Vanity Fair and Braddock biographer, and Sal Rappa, contributor to Cyber Boxing Zone and world famous expert. The documentary explores the historically significant fights against Louis Schmelling, Art Lasky, and of course the battle against Max Baer that gave Jim the World Heavyweight Championship title, and drove Max to retire from the sport. Jim not only became an icon of boxing, but a symbol of the Depression Era and a living tribute to the American spirit. Jim Braddock had an indomitable drive to be the best, against insurmountable odds.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspirational documentary.......2006-12-07

This dvd gives an overview of Braddock's rise, fall, and re-rise (culminating in the heavyweight title fight with Max Baer). It is short in length and therefore gives just a basic overview of Braddock's life and career. The people interviewed (including boxing referrees, boxing historians, and authors) give unabashed praise for the man who fought a heavyweight championship contender on 2 days notice without training for it, the man who broke his own hand so the doctor could re-set it properly, and the man that inspired a nation when he paid back every dime of the welfare money he had received. The documentary also covers less well-known facts about Braddock's life. It reveals that Braddock received cracked ribs during his training for the Baer fight, a fact that Braddock successfully hid from the press. It also highlights the close personal relationship between Braddock and his manager, Joe Gould. The dvd extras include interview segments with Bert Sugar, Michael DeLisa, and David Margolick. I would recommend this dvd to anyone but especially fans of the movie Cinderella Man. This documentary dispels a few errors from that film - particularly, Braddock's being decommissioned, which did not actually happen. It also gives an explanation for the unfair villanizing of Max Baer in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life!.......2006-11-25

Out of work and losing everything, I was ready to throw in the towel. Afer watching Russsel Crowe as Jame J Braddock, I could only dream to have such courage, (being Irish myself), I knew I could not cheat myself out of life, and continued to fight on to a better life. Crowe should have won the Oscar for this performance. He was truly cheated. I was sorry to hear him say he would not do another boxing movie. Crowe was truly inspirational as Jimmy Braddock.

5 out of 5 stars Good Interview with Referee.......2006-03-26

The interview with my father former fighter and Boxing Referee Ron Lipton was really insightful. Many people who read him all the time on Cyberboxingzone loved this DVD along with the other historians like Mike DeLisa and Sal Rappa.

My Father refereed Holyfield, Roberto Duran, Morrison, Pernell Whitiker, Roy Jones Jr and Oscar DeLahoya. He really knows his boxing history and made it very interesting. HIs real appreciation for Braddock, Joe Louis and Max Baer was a hi light for me.

5 out of 5 stars the most moving boxing film since rocky.......2005-12-06

First off, I do not rate mediocre films. Those can be rated mediocre by others unless they are critics who ride the psychophant train.

What a beautiful film. And how perfectly underacted by not only Crowe, but Renee Zellwigger. No one tries to steal the scenes. Ron Howard, as a director, has never allowed it.

Cinematography is superb with the camera cutting to 90 degrees and a bit fuzzy during the fight scenes to present the fighters' point of view. The score is perfect. It never overshadows the film. And being a period piece (one of Howard's fortes) everything is PERFECT.

This is a true slice of history, of a fighter's real life.

Crowe plays Braddick. A fighter who had the world before him, but was rushed to fame before he was ready, was crushed by a single loss in the ring, and a fickle media during the depression of 1929. From the part time dock job he was relegated to, to the comeback, Crowe underplayed the reality. No showboating. Zellwigger plays his wife (without gaining or losing weight a la Bridget Jones) and does a superb job. If both don;t garnish Oscar nominations for this film, the academy should resign themselves to watching Plan Nine From Outer Space over a couple of beers and maybe a hand of canasta.I rooted for Crowe (Braddick through this movie, and hurrahed at the ending. Howard will also get a nomination.

As always, I REFUSE to give this movie away as others do. Otherwise, WHAT'S THE POINT OF WATCHIUNG THE FILM!!!!!

Again, I will NOT give the film away as others do. You will just need to trust me. I do not give stars away for free...

"A sex symbol becomes a thing," says Marilyn Monroe, her voice being approximated by Trudi Jo Marie Keck, who also doubles as the editor of We Remember Marilyn, a historical appreciation of the life of the much-vaunted sex goddess. "I always thought symbols were things you clashed together," she continues to muse. "But if I'm going to be a symbol of anything, I'd rather it be sex than some other things there are symbols for. I know how they'll remember me: 'Here lies Marilyn Monroe, 34-24-36.' But, anyway, they'll remember me." And remember her they do, in this concoction written and directed by Ted Newsom (Ed Wood--Look Back in Angora). Newsom doesn't bother to cite the source for the above words ascribed to Ms. Monroe so it's hard to say where they came from, but they pointedly set the tone for any discussion of sex-symbol iconography. The quote is by turns sad and funny--funny because of the lack of self-awareness evinced in the words. And how better to sum up a career that moved between celebrity and the highest seats of power on a vehicle of sex, and ended early and abruptly. Film clips, photos (where Marilyn the icon truly shone), and a rich array of stock footage form the backdrop for the proceedings. At one point, the voice of director John Huston enriches the soundtrack. --Jim Gay

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely unbelievable!.......2006-10-03

This DVD is so good that I'm almost beyond words. I've read every book about her and never thougtht that I'd see the film footage that's contained here. I can't help but wonder where they got it all and how they got it all. I'm just glad they did! This is a REAL treasure. My thanks to previous reviewers whose comments motivated me to buy this.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a DVD By Its Cover.......2005-10-20

One might look at the cover of this DVD and think that it is a cheap look at the legend Marilyn Monroe. The photograph is the famous "Golden Dreams" Playboy nude taken by Tom Kelley, but a black bathing suit has been badly drawn on top. This doctored photo might mislead; We Remember Marilyn is one of the most thorough documentaries available on Monroe.

Monroe's mother's life is described, as well as Monroe's childhood, modeling, romantic relationships, plastic surgery, three marriages, life in films, and personality including her shrewd comments directed at Joan Crawford's criticisms.

This documentary is narrated by John Christopher Hyke and Monroe's words are spoken by the slightly annoyingly childlike voice of Trudi Jo Marie Keck. However, the use of Marilyn's interviews and book My Story, although possibly altered to protect a studio manufactured image, are highly effective and personal. There are also interviews with Jim Dougherty (Monroe's first husband), Jeanne Carmen (Monroe's model friend), and Robert Cornthwaite (fellow actor).

This documentary is filled with archive footage including that from her films and many rare extras. One gets to see Monroe when she was a model, in early commercials, at premieres, award show film, entertaining the troops, in interviews when she was famous, in film taken on the sets of her films, in a video from her announcement of her divorce from Joe DiMaggio, in a video from a hospital visit, and in footage from the president's birthday party.

Overall, this two hour documentary is exceptionally well done and a must have for Marilyn Monroe fans.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Kelley Sr. cover Art.......2002-03-15

Tom Kelley Sr. Did the cover for this video, at his Los Angeles studios. Now Tom Kelley Jr. is trying to snag the real Marilyn, me! But since the real Monroe can't even get an agent, I would rather write hilarious reviews for people to smile and laugh at! I havent seen this video on Marilyns life, but I'm sure her fans will enjoy it since she has started a hysteria that is like a huge most surfable wave, grab anything about Marilyn you can get your hands on! I hope you like this sort of review but I've written so many today I'm getting punchy!-Love to all my fans out there! Whee its me!M.M.-Marilyn Monroe-if I could, I'd sign it here beautifully!

      4 out of 5 stars Better than I thought.......2002-01-02

I have the DVD and have never seen the video, so I can't compare the two. However, I was impressed with this Marilyn documentary because it provided many details of MM's life and career, including her brief career at Columbia. Marilyn's words (spoken by someone else) were used appropriately throughout so that you got a sense of Marilyn's pain and struggles. The clips of Marilyn's movies were usually the trailers, but that was fine. Film clips were also presented of her news conferences, tv appearance on Ed Murrow's Person to Person show, and Korea appearance--some clips that I had never seen before. Most importantly, Marilyn is presented with sympathy and compassion; still, she was portrayed realistically, not as a Goddess. My only complaint: I wasn't satisfied with the abrupt ending of the documentary; it appeared as if the creators did not want to speculate on MM's mysterious death. Maybe they were right. Speculation on MM's death could provide another documentary! I recommend purchasing this documentary if you are a MM fan. I have seen it many, many times and am still enthralled.

      4 out of 5 stars A glance back at a legend.......2001-03-06

This video is an in-depth look at the life and career of Marilyn Monroe. It displays a woman who was used all her life, but found the determination to make it to the top. Filled with Memories of Marilyn, this video proves to almost make your heart break as you remember her. This is a great recollection of Marilyn for avid fans. For non-fans this is a great look at a Hollywood legend; this could change your mind about this star completely. This video is a must-see!

The incredible life story of boxer James J. Braddock is that of the ultimate underdog: a heavyweight contender from New Jersey who lost his fame and fortune during the Great Depression only to win the hearts of the downtrodden during a spectacular comeback. While Braddock's tale was deftly dramatized by director Ron Howard in the biopic CINDERELLA MAN, this documentary portrays the real man through archival footage and interviews with experts like ESPN's Jeremy Schaap.

4 out of 5 stars For boxing fans only.......2006-09-03

I agree with the last reviewer that the bonus material is the real gem here. The actual 'documentary' is just a mediocre reenactment of Braddock's career, but the footage of four of Braddock's fights are worth watching alone. The famous bout between Braddock and Max Baer is shown in it's entirety, as well as Braddock's bout with Joe Louis. I found it amusing how awkward these guys looked compared to modern day boxers, but don't get me wrong, these guys were tough. It was amazing how Max Baer's mannerisms were exactly how they were portrayed in 'Cinderella Man.' Another thing I noticed which was not in the film was the fact that Baer outweighed Braddock by twenty lbs. in their fight. This might not sound like much, but anyone who knows boxing will tell you that this is a huge weight difference. If you just liked the film 'Cinderella Man' for the story, you probably won't enjoy this dvd, but if you're a huge boxing fan like me, it's definitely worth the watch.

      4 out of 5 stars Why I liked it.......2006-02-22

I am a big time fight fan. I rented this dvd thinking it was a documentary, it was not. The main feature is a boring dramatization. I am buying this dvd for the bonus material alone.

This dvd contains 4 fights that are must see's for the avid fight fan, the dvd is worth owning for these fights alone. If not for the inclusion of these actual fights this dvd is the Red Shoe diaries minus the babes, a total waste. Go straight to the menu click on the bonus material and watch boxing in an era where men were men. These guys are not "Golden boys" but they are golden. James Braddock was one tough hombre apparently with a heart of gold. The bonus material contains Braddock fights that took place between 1929 and 1938.

If you are like me and you knew who the Cinderella man was 35 yrs before you ever heard the name "Russell" what's his name then this dvd is for you.

In my mind, the bonus materials of this dvd and the movie "Cinderella Man" are complementary to eachother and should be seen together.

      2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-02-18

I rented this thinking that it was a documentary. Boy, was I wrong. It's edited like a music video. It is shot as if Braddock, his wife and family are all being interviewed during the actual events of Braddock's life. ( Ie. Braddock saying" I know I ain't gonna get anudda chance like dis" or a promoter saying "Dat night he found anudda reason ta fight. Ta save the life of his wife and kids.") Ugh. The film by Ron Howard shows Braddock and his wife to be brave, heroic people. This thing by ESPN makes them out to be self pitying losers. Skip this and rent the Crowe film.
