This obligatory girls' version of Stand by Me begins with actors Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Demi Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell doing a lousy job of playing adult versions of the film's youthful protagonists. The idea is that this quartet of characters is having a reunion, which serves as a preface to the main story about school chums who make a pact to stay close and supportive through thick and thin. The trouble is that Griffith, Moore, Wilson, and O'Donnell look like they've rehearsed their scenes for no more than a few minutes, and after boring us silly there's little reason to get excited about anything else. Still, it's nice to have a supporting cast that includes Janeane Garofalo and Bonnie Hunt, while among the girls are three young actresses who have been burning up the road in recent years: Christina Ricci (The Opposite of Sex), Thora Birch (A Clear and Present Danger), and Gaby Hoffmann (Strike). --Tom Keogh

My life on film!.......2007-06-23
The setting of this film is in Indiana in the early 70's. I was the same age as the characters at that time and was also growing up in a small Indiana town. The movie is like my youth on film..... I love it!!
Now and Then.......2007-05-17
Although it is something of a chic flick, "Now and Then" is a great movie. I would watch having a youngster see it as there are some adult topics discussed. Each child character and her adult counter part, look so similar that it is amazing! It is a very well told narrative of young ladies coming to terms with growing up and all that it involves and holding onto friendship in spite of it all.

This was in wonderful condition it was almost brand new. Very quick delivery thank you.
The Worst Film in the History of Cinema!!!!.......2007-04-09
I dont care how bad a movie can be. Even films that suck beyond belief can at least have a few moments that are not so painful to watch. This film actually amazes me, I cannot think of a single second of this charade that I can actually call quality. It's actually insulting to watch. After viewing this garbage, I have come to discover that I HATE Rosie Odonell! I Hate Demi Moore!! I Hate Melanie Griffith!!
It Stinks! It Sucks! The DVD should include a hand-gun so you can blow your brains out as punishment for watching it!
Personal Classic.......2007-03-26
Great Movie! Great Music! Great story line! This fabulous film begins in the present, introduces the four main adult characters, and slips back
to the summer they were 12 yrs. old, and made the pact that has brought them together now. This is a story about growing up and into yourself.
'Now and Then' is deliciously well-cast, in both the adult and 12 yr. old roles, and very well presented. And for me, very vivid! (As I was 12 then, and even live to tell the tale...*).
While I classify this as a family friendly movie, I definately recommend it for mother/daughter/grand-daughter/babysitter connections.
Happy viewing!!!

Action and hold your attention film........2007-06-12
This film works perfectly and it is one that you must watch because if you turn away you would miss a vital part.
wow.......2006-05-01
Not a bad movie, from from back in the 80's. (It's an adult film, not for children). Now we know what is wrong with society. If the movie follows the book except for cussing (never read the book)? Then we are letting children read about pre marital sex, car stealing, drug use, and gang violence. This is an "R" rated movie, I would hope that any teacher of children could read a rating and would have the sense not to show it to a class of underage children.
That was not That Was Then. . .This is Now........2006-04-21
I totally agree with Ms. Horkey and the Texas School Teacher. What a let down!I realize that the screenplay was written by
Emilio Estevez instead of S.E. Hinton (as in The Outsiders). I will never waste my money on or embarrass my students with anything scripted by him again. Too bad I did not read their reviews before I ordered or preview it before I showed it to my ninth graders (who are learning English as a second language). Their is no excuse or justification for such a rotten rendition of book used in schools for the past twenty years. It was so bad we had to turn off the video and just finish reading the final three chapters--totally unacceptable, and I am still angry! If you take EE's favorite F word and the two letter preposition that tends to be used with it, this describes his rendition of a wonderful work.
Made in 1985.......2006-03-24
My students had read the book so I purchased the film. It is "R" rated because there is a LOT of swearing...but it goes with the story. The acting in the fight scenes is really phony, which got the kids laughing. Also, it changes a lot of the book...but we were all glad to see it as it still pretty much followed the book.
That Was Then; This Is Now DVD.......2006-03-22
I ordered this DVD to show at school to my eighth-grade class after we read the novel; however, the language was unacceptable for the classroom. The book did not have the four-letter word nor the Lord's name in vain. Due to the foul language, I did not show the DVD. Maybe a note that the DVD is not recommended for classroom use would be helpful. In addition, it did not follow the plot in the book. My students were looking forward to viewing the movie and were disappointed that they were unable to do so.

Shuzo "Shu" Matsutani, a rambunctious adolescent kendo student, encounters a mysterious girl named Lala-Ru in an abandoned factory near his home. When she's captured by hostile mecha, Shu is taken with her to another world, to the unfortunately named fortress-ship Hellywood, ruled by the psychotic King Hamdo. The apparently ancient Lala-Ru can produce vast quantities of water, which Hamdo desires. Shu is imprisoned, beaten, and tortured before being inducted into Hamdo's army of child-soldiers. He doggedly insists that he must protect Lala-Ru, despite her great powers. They escape Hellywood, wander through the desert, and reach a pueblo-like village where they defeat Hamdo. The rambling storyline recalls both El Hazard and Escaflowne. What sets Now and Then apart is the gritty realism of the violence: unlike other anime characters, Shu seems to feel real pain when Hamdo's thugs beat him. Although the rape of the Earth girl Sara is suggested rather than depicted, she has to decide whether to keep or abort the child. These depictions of the brutality of war give Now and Then a grim power many better-written and better-animated series lack. The most interesting segment on the "bonus disc" juxtaposes the animated version of the final episode with the storyboards. "From Then to Now" includes clips from the audition tapes of the actors playing Hamdo (Jack Taylor) and Shu (a surprisingly burly Ed Paul) along with interviews and standard behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions. Rated 16 Up for considerable violence, minor profanity, adult themes. --Charles Solomon

Brutal and uneasy but nonetheless engrossing mini-drama........2007-06-14
If you found GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES depressing, just wait till you see NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE. A shocking entry for Akitarou Daichi, the man responsible for the delightfully funny ANIMATION RUNNER KUROMI, this thirteen-episode mini-series is often disturbing with nary a lighthearted moment; at the same time, though, it is very intriguing and interesting to watch.
The series begins on a deceptively cheerful note when young Shuzo Matsutani--who refers to himself as Shu, so that's what I'll call him from now on--is making his way home from a kendo practice match when he sees -- wouldn't you know -- a mysterious, quiet girl sitting alone on a water tower. The girl, who goes by the name of Lala-Ru, catches Shu's eye and he somehow manages to strike up a conversation with her. Suddenly, out of nowhere these giant snake-like machines appear and kidnap the girl. In trying to rescue her, Shu finds himself transported away from his cheery hometown of Japan into a dreary, desolate futuristic world adorned with the very fitting name of Hellywood. And this new place is sheer hell indeed; Shu finds himself prisoner on a dominating fortress where children from other parts of the world are being whipped into war soldiers. It turns out that Lala-Ru has a pendant that can bring water and life back to this desolate world, and the insane, maniacal despot who commands the fortress, Hamdo, wants it at any cost. Of course, Lala Ru does not have it; Shu took it from her in a vain rescue attempt only to lose it again when he is taken prisoner himself. Subjected to physical torture and abuse, Shu is forced to become a soldier and observe one horrifying atrocity of war after another.
As with GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, NOW AND THEN HERE AND THERE deals with the consequences of war as well as the plights of lonely individuals struggling to survive. Here, however, the trauma is turned up by a huge notch. The children forced into war are a rather surly, sometimes confrontational bunch forced to commit terrible crimes against their will, making this a potentially sadder and bleaker story. There are even plenty of scenes which involve backlashing, murder, genocide, and others that leave little to the imagination. But all these seem like nothing compared to one particularly mean-spirited subplot, in which a young American girl, Sara, is raped by one of Hamdo's soldiers. (We later discover that she is pregnant from this encounter.) There are also several moments where Hamdo makes somewhat sexual advances toward Lala-Ru, much to the chagrin of his lady lieutenant Abelia. Such sequences make NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE a very difficult and sometimes painful series to sit through, although the show does end on a positive note (albeit somewhat awkwardly). Needless to say, this is not a series for either children or the faint at heart.
It also deals with some very compelling character studies, particularly in the cases of the children held prisoner at Hellywood. One of them, Tabool, is nasty and cruel, secretly scheming to overthrow the dictator Hamdo and conquer the fortress. His childhood friend, the emotionally wartorn and borderline dangerous Nabuca, hides a noble heart but often gives in to his darker side. (Of the characters, he is the most interesting.)
Technically, NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE is not the most impressive show; the color palette is appropriately dark and imaginative, but the animation itself is more like traditional television quality, not up to the polish of shows like, say, FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST. Simultaneously, however, this style gives the series even more of an edge. The melancholy musical score is very fitting, although not necessarily one that will be remembered long after the show's over.
I should also give Central Park Media a shout-out for their treatment of this show. In addition to having great picture and sound quality, there are lots of noteworthy extras. One particularly enjoyable bonus is a feature where we see several of the voice actors of the English dub act out their lines and speak of their characters. Even if you've already seen this type of feature before, it's nonetheless a point of interest, especially if you watch Anime dubbed.
As for the dub itself, CPM's track record of dubbing has been shaky, although their dubs for LODOSS OVA, SLAYERS, KUROMI, and WORLD OF NARUE are among some of their better ones. So, too, is this one. Although the ADR script stays a little TOO slavishly close to the subtitles, the dialogue flows well. The vocal cast includes veteran dub performers such as Dan Green, Crispin Freeman, Rachael Lillis, Scottie Ray, and Lisa Ortiz. All do excellent jobs, but it's really Jack Taylor that steals the show as the psychotically evil Hamdo. His bravura role makes up for the some of the other weaknesses of the dub--one of which is that the children sound too mature. Ed Paul's Shu, although emotionally sound, takes some getting used to as well. All in all, though, it works pretty well for this kind of show.
With its dark, dreary nature and often painful sequences, NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE is not an easy series to recommend; however if it's emotionally powerful Anime you're looking for, then this series may be worth a look.
"can we watch the sunset again someday?" .......2007-05-16
Wow, this movie is simply amazing. Everything about it great, from the story line, to the characters, to the amazing ending. After watching the crap fest that was "Akira" I almost gave up on non Miyazaki anime for good. After all, "Akira" was supposed to be the standard to all good anime out there, a master piece, but is sucked eggs. But I decided that anime deserved one more chance to prove its stuff. I stumbled on this movie by accident, coming across it on a listmania page and thinking "hey, this sounds good." so I bought the series and gave is a chance, thank God I did.
The movie starts out simple enough, our main character Shu is on his way home after losing a kendo match with his arch rival when he sees a young girl sitting on top of an old factory smoke stack. Being the kind of person he is, Shu climbs up to meet her and discovers her name is Lala Ru. But then they get attacked by futuristic machines and get sucked into an alternate world (or earth ten billion years from now, I can't really tell) onto the enormous battleship Hellywood. In this world the sun is a red giant, and because of its size almost all the water in the world has been evaporated, making earth a dessert planet. What makes Lala Ru so important in the fact that she can manipulate water though a small pendent she whereas around her neck.
What makes this movie different from other films is the fact that there is so much cruelty directed towards children. There are many horrors here, like child rape, murder, torture, mass kidnapping, genocide, you name it its here. From the first time we see Shu get tortured, to the attempted rape scene at the beginning of episode 5, the movie never lets up on the cruelty.
So let's break this movie down into its parts and see just what makes it so great.
PLOT: the plot is pretty simple. Boy meets girl, girl has magical pendent, girl gets attacked by people wanting the pendent, boy tries to save girl, and boy and girl go on adventure. Sound familiar? It should, this is just what happened in Miyazakies "Castle in the Sky." But after the first episode this movie stops resembling "Castle..." and starts resembling "Grave of the Fireflies." There is no high flying adventure here, just utter sadness and death.
CHARACTORS: this is the strength of the movie. First we have Shu, a typical fun loving boy from Japan. Although he is farley stupid and weak, the fact that he refuses to give up on his morals despite all that is going on around him makes him the only ray of hope in this otherwise dark film.
Then we have Lala Ru. From the very beginning she is a mystery, and remains so up until the very end. She doesn't say much, in fact in most episodes she doesn't say anything at all, but the blank look on her face is very disturbing and haunting.
There are also Nabuca, Boo, and Tabool, three children solders kidnapped from their homes and forced into the army. These three characters are extremely different, with Boo being the young impressionable boy who still has some sense of morels, Nabuca being a person who will do anything to survive and go home, and Tabool who has let power get to his head and now dreams of conquering the world.
Then we have the two Hellywood natives, Abilia and Hamdo. Hamdo is the king of Hellywood, and a certifiable nut case. He is completely insane, and his antics can be very funny at times, silly and childish at others, but downright scary most of the time. He is evil and the things he does are horrible, but sometimes you can't help but feel a tiny bit sorry for him because it doesn't really seem like he knows what he's doing. And then there's Abilia, his cold, devoted captain. She is pretty much Hamdo's right hand woman, doing whatever he tells her to and accepting the abuse he throws at her in stride. Why? Some would have you think it's because she's really in love with him, but I don't' know. Abilia never shows much emotion other than anger and frustration.
But the most powerful character in this movie I think is Sara, an American girl, no older than 15, who was kidnapped from her home because she was mistaken for Lala Ru. She, by far, suffers the most in this movie. Having no use to Hellywood, Sara is forced to be a comfort woman for the soldiers on board, in order to make her pregnant so she can have bare more soldiers for Hamdo's army. Subjected to constant rape, Sara evolves over the course of the series from a naïve frightened little girl to a bitter, angry depressed young woman who has been forced to grow up faster than she wanted in this harsh world. It is amazing to look at how she completely changes form volume one to volume three. I won't ruin the ending for you, but she makes a decision then that is so different form what she would have done in the first volume and is so sad it left me shaking long after the credits rolled.
MUSIC- I do have a high standard for movie music, being spoiled rotten by the LOTR Star Wars, and Miyazaki's films. This series doesn't match the quality of any of those films, but has a beauty of its own. The opening credits are fun and mask the dark theme of the movie, while the ending lullaby is very pretty, but would have been A LOT better if it hadn't have been a vocal. The background music is good, but suffers from a lack of variety. The same sad theme is played almost every time something sad happens, which means it's played about every five to ten minutes. The rest is a mixture of fast paced drum beats and beautiful violin/flute scores. The drum beats can be a little cheesy, but the violin and flute solos are great, especially the theme for Zadi Bars (at the beginning of episode nine). This movie could have benefited from a better soundtrack, but it's good the way it is.
As for flaws this movie does have a lot of them, as my non anime loving sister was all to ready to point out, but to most people you will be too sucked into this film to notice until you watch it the second or third time. The only things I would have done differently though are that 1) I would have focused more on Nabuca's and Sara's characters. Both are underplayed and don't get enough screen time. Sara all but disappears in volume two (which caused me a lot of stress because I was dieing to know what happened to her) and Nabuca does the same at the beginning of volume three. 2) I would have Shu compromise on his morals just once, have him kill someone and feel guilty about it for the rest of the series.
The only real problem I had with this movie was the English dub. Now, I have a love-hate relationship with this dub, on one hand the writing, I think, is better in the dub, with my favorite line in the whole movie (Sara's last words in the series) only being in the dub. On the other hand the voices for some of the characters, Sara in particular, are just awful. Mostly all the characters are at least passable but Sara's voice over is just bad which is a shame because is because she is the one character that needs good acting the most. Sara cries a whole lot in this movie, but her cries mostly sound forced and her tone of voice never quite seems to fit the situation she's in. At the same time however, when she needs good acting the most, she gets it. The attempted rape scene (probably the most powerful and definitive scene in the series) at the beginning of episode six is almost perfectly done, although she doesn't say a word during the whole thing. It's really very scary and chilling. Also, the end of episode 11, another really powerful scene involving Sara, is very well done although not perfect. But, although she does all the really important scenes really well, all the rest of the time Sara's voice acting is really bad. Also Shu's voice sound to old. But Hamdo, Abelia, Nabuca, and Boo are all great.
ENDING - I can not believe how so many people can complain about the ending to this movie. I have seen hundreds, maybe thousands, of movies and never has one left me completely satisfied and yet wanting more. It was so beautiful that and perfect that I was left speechless. I had been warned about the ending, but now can't understand why people didn't like it. I LOVED it, and consider it to be the best ending to any movie I've ever seen in my life. The ending is what put this movie into my top five lists; it's currently my fourth favorite movie of all time.
This is it, the best anime ever made. True, Miyazaki is the greatest anime director ever, but his movies are good in TOTALLY different ways. If you're looking for a series that can quite possibly make you cry and WILL depress you, give Now and Then, Here and There a try, but remember to bring lots of tissues. You'll need them.
What really got to me though when watching this movie was the realization that stuff like this is really going on in places like Sudan other African countries. Characters like Nabuca, Boo, Sara, represent real people that are going through the same struggles as the characters in the movie. If this movie really saddens you than turn that sadness into something constructive. There is an organization called "Compassion International" that helps kids and their families in Africa. For $33 a month you can support a child, supplying them with food, shelter, education, and other necessities. The kid I'm sponsoring is named Saidi Ali Yaa and he lives in Kenya. Please people, if you are able, do not allow the torments of these children continue. If you could help Sara, or Boo in the movie would you? Well, you have a chance, please don't waist it. it only cost $33 dollars a month and if I can do that working as a bag boy at Publix, I'm sure many of you can afford to do the same thing.
Awesome, about freaking time.......2006-12-27
I was lucky and just picked this up because the artwork on the box looked pretty good. This was a very good anime, enough said. This is how anime should be. Dark, disturbed, and at the end a good message. Artwork was amazing, music was dead on. Story might have been a little simplistic and the villian was kind of corny, but other than very good. It goes on my best list. And I am sick and tired of the dragonballz, pokemon, types; this is the exact opposite. It is like: Akira, Escaflowne, Neon Genesis. Not like (thank god), Pokemon, Dragonballz, other corny anime.
Don't believe the hype.......2006-09-19
I've only watched the first six episodes so far, waiting for some in depth story to unfold with diverse characters... blah blah blah.
Nothing but a simple story line with everything spelled out. There's no complexity to it, no unfolding of the characters, no mystery of peeling through the layers of their lives. All the episodes seem so long and dragged out but nothing different ever really happens. Boy tries to save girl, boy gets beat up, boy does what he feels is right without thinking it through, no strategy, no thought to his actions. It almost seems like a Saturday Morning Cartoon with violence and unnecessary rape suggested scenes.
Another thing that really bugs me is the fact that the evil King Hamdo is such a whiny coward, but yet somehow manages to recieve complete obedience from all his subjects. Somebody would have dethroned him by now, in fact there was an assassination attempt where the two assassins were skilled enough to sneak all the way into his chambers with out being noticed, kill his guards, have him in there sights, and not only miss him, but stand out in the open only to be shot by his scared shaky hand from under his desk. The actions and reactions of this world are just to unrealistic.
I want my wasted hours back. Good thing this only cost me twenty dollars
Terrific, even with its flaws.......2006-08-06
After reading some of the glowing reviews on this site, I opted to pick this series up. I was immediately hooked upon watching the first episode, and I can honestly say I remained hooked up until the last minute of the last episode.
First let me say I watched the series in Japanese with the subtitles on. I have nothing against dubs, I just felt that a series with such a reputation for darkness would be better to read, with the voice acting being only peripheral and to demonstrate via tone what the characters were expressing and what emotions they were feeling. I mention this only because I can't really comment on the quality of the english voice acting.
The character designs recall some of Miyazaki's work, maybe mixed with elements of Astro Boy or something of that sort, but it somehow fits rather nicely. Shu, the main character, is a Japanese boy, and obviously so. Lala Ru, the young girl Shu meets and tries to rescue, looks fairly plain, but maintains an eerie presence thanks to her pupil-less eyes. Hamdo, the mad king of the fortress Hellywood and essentially the main villain, is delightfully unnerving in appearance with a strange bowl-cut and teenage mustache. His female second-in-command, Abelia, is obviously attractive but not in the usual anime super-exaggerrated style. Overall the designs serve their purpose well.
The plot is at the same time simple and deep, should you choose to look beyond the surface. Basically, it's about Shu getting swept into a hellish future thanks to his attempt to save young Lala Ru, whom he had only just met, and his struggle to survive and save her from her captors. Beyond that, it's a show about themes - the gruesome consequences of war, the way violence both dealt and received can alter different people's views, the question of whether or not one can maintain hope in the face of unspeakable horrors, the insanity of blindly following leaders without question... the list goes on. It is these themes that make the series truly shine, as the simplistic overall plot serves merely as a vehicle for these ideas.
My only real complaint is that in the end, few things are explained, but if one is willing to overlook that, they'll find a rewarding and beautifully executed 'idea machine' of sorts that does not disappoint.

a wonderful DVD, honoring the legacy of the late, great Victor Borge...........2005-12-23
Anyone who isn't familiar with the comedic genius of Victor Borge, I suggest that you check out this DVD. It is a concise look at Victor Borge (born Borge Rosenbaum) as a great comedian, showman and masterful classically trained pianist.
Whether the Danish-born Victor Borge is presenting a classic sketch, like his "Phonetic Pronounciation" bit (where he vocalizes punctuation, with accompanying text/dialogue in an old romance novel, with sounds comparable to "farts" and "squirts"...it takes on a new dimension as an original and very funny invented language), or competing with Leonid Hambro for the use of one grand piano, this man will leave you rolling in the aisles.
Borge blends his unique sense of dry, broad humor with a sensitive ear and a beautiful personal style, with the numerous classical pieces he peforms on piano. I have never seen someone quite like Borge, and he is truly irreplaceable in our hearts and minds. Check it out......
Victor = 4 stars, presentation = 2 stars.......2004-05-29
Victor Borge (1909-2000) was a pianist from Denmark and had a musical comedy act which mixed classical piano and amusing fictitious anectdotes. He has a pretty thick accent, which at times muddled up his speaking but other times was put to good use.
This DVD contains a representative sample of his routines - anectdotes about growing up, some straight classical music, some of his comedy duets - in this case with a male opera singer as Victor only "dinks" the keys about 8 times during the 2 minutes, and another playing a classical piece "poorly" with another pianist.
The collection also contains his most popular routine (judging from the audience reaction), which is his "phonetic punctuation", where he reads a short story and injects various sounds and gestures representing punctuation marks. The odd thing is that this routine is identical to the one "as seen on TV", but the last line was left off in this performance - although it is not strictly necessary (it sounds like 3 farts, representing "...")
The "Then and Now" portion of the title refers to the fact that some clips of his performances over the decades are shown, including one with the Muppets, and another with newsman Mike Wallace.
The 80-minute long DVD itself is rather skimpy. Two menu choices "Play Video" or "Features". "Features" is an awkwardly laid out chapter selection menu spread over 4 pages. Sound and picture are acceptable but not great.
There are a few routines not in this collection that I really like and miss. One is Victor playing certain classical pieces, and in the middle of each one, will drift into a version of "Happy Birthday" - perhaps that is on the "birthday" DVD. Another is when he competes for the same keyboard with a second pianist and they end up alternating notes. The third one I miss is when he is saying thanks and goodnight while playing, and - with perfect timing - says he performs for just the laugh and smile from the audience. "The rest goes to the government".
This is a pretty good sampler of Victor's funny work.

Customer Reviews:
LET ME OUTTA THIS WORLD!.......2005-07-25
Volume 2 of Now and Then gets off to a harrowing start as Sara, a young American kidnapped by Hamdo's forces and repeatedly raped by one of his soldiers, takes revenge and then flees into the desert! Because the king obliterated many of his own forces in a recent battle, he sends out his remaining troops to forcefully draft men from the surrounding villages. Add to that women to impregnate! Shu revolts against this and is thrown back into the dungeon, where his fate may be sealed, unless one of his fellow soldiers helps him out! After all, he still has to rescue Lala-Ru!
This anime is beginning to hold a rank with one of my favorite shows, The Twelve Kingdoms, in terms of character development and moral authority. There are people just like that mad king Hamdo, living and killing in our world. While his behavior is a little over the top and almost becomes comical at times, there's always a sense of menace, as if he might put a knife in you at any time. Shu and Sara are admirable characters even though one of them commits murder. What else could she do to escape from her captors? The tactics employed by the soldiers here are no different than any puppet force controlled by a tyrant that must rule by fear. The fact that all these horrible events are happening to children makes it doubly tragic. But Shu keeps on plugging away, keeping hope by his side, having faith that someone besides himself knows how messed up this world is. This show is very gritty, controversial, and for mature audiences, because of certain situations the children are put in. Great look at the darkness and beauty of the human spirit.
Second Disc = WOW.......2005-04-23
I didn't think the second disc could top the first disc. I was wrong! It Blew Me Away. This series is really starting to grow on me even though I generally dislike depressing stories. Now and Then.., is one of the few anime series that made me vocally shout and cheer the characters on, as each of them fight to survive in a world of terrible atrocities. Nobody is free from a terrible fate when targeted by King Hamdo's army. Not men, women, or children. There's quite a lot of plot development in this volume and I can't wait to see how everything turns out in the end. What part will our hero Shu play in the ultimate fate of this war stricken world? And what will happen to the mysterious Lala Ru and her magical pendant? I'm eagerly waiting to watch the next disc.
A definate must see.......2002-07-21
Now and Then, Here and There is definately an all time great. The movie starts a bit humorous, like any typical anime; however, it quickly moves the audience to a dark and depressing world. By being torn from his own world, the main character Shu, is thrust into an alternate plane where oppression and war are law. This story encapsulates overcoming the hate of evil, indifference, and fear.
The overall tone of this anime is a bit depressing. The strong brutality and involvement of children is a bit moving. However, the creator does a great job of reminding the audience, through the main character, of a 'light at the end of the tunnel'
The artwork and animation are both rather basic, but this doesn't take away from the delivery what so ever. In fact, the basic and 'cartooney' appearance of this film seem to allow the creater to make better use of color and dialogue to deliver the story. Also, the soundtrack is a definate winner.
Unlike some anime, the character development in this series is great. Many lessons are learned as the characters are faced with fear and loss. In the end, they have all matured from their starting point significantly.
Overall, this is a 5 star anime with a serious, yet entertaining movie. The story is great and the message is brilliant. Get the set or else you'll just be waiting to see what happens in the end.
In the Tradition of "The Time Machine".......2002-03-23
..And I don't mean the new film by that name. It is much more reminicent of the 1960's movie version of the great H.G. Wells time travel story, but animated in very fine style. This 'Now & Then' is the second feature in the series and every bit as entertaining as the first. While the first installment focused in on the characters Shu (from the present) & La La Rue (from the future), 'Flight & Fall' introduces us to Sara, who has been taken as a slave by a first-rate anime villan. She escapes into the desert though where she is befriended by an assortment of renegades and - I don't want to give the ending away so I will leave it at that, but the story moves along at a good pace. Animation quality, backgrounds and dubbing are all high quality and the extras on the DVD included more than I had expected. They have storyboards, background sketches, an art gallery, a choice of English and Japanese subtitles, excellent Dolby Surround Sound and more. If you like anime and science fiction, you can't go wrong with 'Now & Then, Here & There: flight & Fall!'
Among the most serious anime out there.......2002-03-10
The tone of this series is the total opposite of Jubei Chan and Elf Princess Rane, by the same director. This second volume continues the solid linear storytelling with an old school feel. To show just how serious this series is, the very first scene in episode 6 portrays attempted rape. Episodes typically show scenes of intense brutality. All in all, a beautiful tale of how enslaved children maintain their optimism and morality.

Customer Reviews:
Sacrifice of Angels.......2005-07-02
As the previous volume ended, it seemed that Shu and company had found safe haven from the horror surrounding them. But that was just a brief respite. As the final volume begins, things are about to get much, much worse.
For starters there's Sara, whose reunion with Shu is marred when she attacks Lala-ru on sight, unfairly but perhaps understandably blaming her for what happened to her - and she's going to need support more than ever when she learns some devestating news.
Then, the remarkable Sis finds that sheer willpower alone isn't going to be enough to protect her foster family as paranoia sets in as rumors of an imminent Hellywood attack spread.
The rumors prove all too true, and to make matters worse Nabuca's regiment is among the first to arrive - and the young soldier's actions in the first volume come back to haunt him in ways he couldn't imagine when the little girl Soon finds out what happened to her father, leaving him emotionally drained just when he has to finally deal with Tabool.
And finally there's Lala-ru herself, who has to make her own choices as Hamdo's madness reaches it's full height.
They all face their destinies as the series ends. A powerful parable of war and friendship, despair and hope, loss and faith, Now and Then, Here and There belongs in the collection of any anime fan 17+ years of age - especially with the outrageously easy on the wallet boxed set now available.
testament to the human spirit - highly depressing.......2004-09-01
As a viewer of many many anime series, I have to say that this show is the most depressing I have seen. Don't let the character designes fool you, as it contains elements that are often glossed over in war movies...
Unlike the other major depressing anime, Grave of the Fireflies, this show doesn't even let you cry to release the emotional tension it builds. The harshness of battle and war on the young recruits, the psychotic "leader" Hamdo, and the fate of LaLaRu and Shu are all depicted in the gritty reality that is war. It's thoroughly depressing.
The show's reality makes this one totally worth seeing, and I recommend it to those who want a serious anime. That said, don't view this while depressed.
Highly Underappreciated.......2003-08-28
By the time I saw 'Now And Then Here And There' I was no stranger to anime. This one I found resting on the shelves of blockbuster, that in itself is a rarity, in my neighborhood it is impossible to find anime to rent, it's either purchase or never see it.
And so after breezing through the DVD's I cannot emphasize the quality of this show. The animation is fantastic, the art while cartoony still gets everything across. But what really hits home is the fantastic characters, not one character in the show is perfect, nothing beats a hero who has flaws. Every character in this anime is faced with a dilemma, Nabuca's struggle particularly touched me, as did Sarah who has one of the toughest choice someone could make (I won't spoil it).
Really nothing I can say will do this justice, this is a fantastic anime and it's HIHGLY Underappreciated, there's hardly any fansites out there, and the number of reviews here alone should help tip you off. If you are reading this I plead with you to at least give this a rent, it deserves at least a chance.
Sad but beautiful.......2002-05-12
That was a spoiler, wasn't it? Well what else can you expect from this show? Here you have, in the midst of war, adults behaving like children, and children acting like adults in trying to comprehend the situation.
If you're used to endings where good always triumphs and evil is punished you will be severely disappointed. The conflict, emotions, and violence in this story are realistic. In real life, good is not always vindicated.
In the second to the last episode there's a standoff scene with children pointing rifles at each other which could shock some viewers. I thought it was well executed. If you have been exposed to unromanticized war stories, then this anime is highly recommended.

I mean, REALLY!--change your voice and talk with an accent, spouting vapid platitudes lifted from various religions, toss in some "scientific" terms taken out of context and distorted, and people will pay you MONEY! They'll even take your advice--I mean, your spirit's advice--and live by it! What a sweet racket! Shu, a spirited schoolboy and overeager kendo student, is whisked off to a galaxy far, far away by an alien SWAT team on snakelike ships. The lovely images of Earth are replaced with the grand and imposing designs of a military world, and Shu's happy-go-lucky life turns much darker. He's hunted, interrogated, tortured, and finally drafted into a sadistic king's army of lost boys kidnapped from worlds all over the galaxy. The initial five episodes of this 13-part manga series from Akitaroh Daichi (Jubei-Chan the Ninja Girl) are strung together as a two-hour interstellar adventure (though the opening and closing credits of each episode remain intact). New characters and intriguing ideas are layered in with each installment, but it all feels like a setup for the coming story of galactic war and brewing revolution. A slow start to a promising epic. Rated 16 and up. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Dragged through a time warp, Shu is thrust into a hellish future of slavery and war. There he is captured by an army of kidnapped children. Caught between reluctant soldiers and the madman who has stolen their innocence, Shu fights to save the future! Episodes 1-5.
Customer Reviews:
A Terrific (And Prophetical) Anime Series.......2007-03-18
I can't really add too much to the great reviews already written for this series except a few things:
1) If you watch this series English Dubbed, you won't enjoy it as much. The actors do a good enough job (which in itself is unusual in an anime show), but the ages aren't correct - hearing college-aged voices coming out of the mouths of adolescents really ruins the setting, at least for me. And while the evil Hando is clearly insane in Japanese, he just sounds too over the top in English - like a video game villain or something.
2) The price for each volume is so low for used copies (in some cases NEW), that any anime lover NEEDS to get these volumes now. I think the series is that good.
3) While watching this first volume, I felt some deja vu during the second episode - an usurper leader invading countries "for their own good", stealing their valuable liquid (water), becomes so hated that he starts to lose his mind - oh, and quelches human rights and tortures his enemies, too. Isn't there another leader who rose to power through questionable means, invaded a country "for their own good" and stole their valuable liquid (oil), became unbelievably hated, quelches human rights and tortures his enemies?
Now whatever your political affiliation might be doesn't matter - I at first believed this to be another recent Japanese anime subtly (or not so much) using the west's actions as a plot device (it's very subtle in the Ishbala storyline in Full Metal Alchemist, for example - the military invading an ancient middle-eastern settlement, insulting their religious beliefs and customs, with dire results).
The big difference is that Now And Then, Here And There was made in 1999! Debuted in U.S. in 2002) This startled me because I was amazed by just how NOT-subtle they were in introducing Hamda that I was thinking they may have really turned off right wing anime fans (there's are a few). This reminded me of the old old book called "Futility" by Morgan Robertson - about the 'unsinkable' ship called Titan. It came out about 15 years before the Titanic's maiden voyage.
But don't worry - by the time you get to the second volume (Flight And Fall), you'll be completely immersed in Lala Ru's world and Shu's problems in it. It's an amazing journey with gorgeous animation (once in a while the animation looks a bit ugly, like an afterschool 30-min cartoon but that's rare) - but like I said, other reviewers described the virties of this series much better than I could...

Wow... What a wonderful little anime we have here! It's surprising it's not more popular than it is. True, the animation style is a little more simplistic than your typical anime, but it has its unique charm that strengthens the anime rather than mitigates.
This is quite the depressing anime. You watch different characters going through horrible situations, such as torture, murdering, rape (although, it's done tastefully. It's not a total gorefest or anything, but it suggests and shows enough for the viewer to get the point)... All the characters are struggling to survive, each with the glimmer of hope of better things to come, including the protagonists, antagonists, and all the characters in the blurry line in-between.
The characters are each pushed further and further onto the brink of sanity, and you'll have to wonder what their motivations are. Why is Shu always so blindly optimistic? Why is Lala Ru so cold and detached? Why is Hamdo a total psycho and why is Abelia so loyal to him? Not all questions are answered, leaving the viewer to wonder about some of the characters past lives that influence their present decisions - which is a good thing, in my opinion.
Character development is very well done and it's sad seeing some of those characters start to fall apart emotionally and beaten up physically, but the anime leaves you with an important lesson at the end - something you'll need to watch for yourself.
This is the first of three volumes, though, and contains 5 episodes. It starts off well - introducing you to the most important characters. It has its funny, shocking, and disturbing moments, and it quickly introduces you to the conflict. It's fast-paced, but not too fast where all the characters are lost in the action. You might want to get all three volumes simultaneously because you'll want to see the other two volumes after finishing this one.
Painful but Excellent..........2005-04-22
I thought I'd give this series a spin since I'd heard it was good. The story is basically about a boy named Shu who gets transported to a war ravaged world where the twisted king Hamdo is searching for a magic pendant. The first thing I noticed was the fantastic music and fast pacing. This show is exciting every step of the way. The character designs are a little simple but the animation on a whole is excellent.
The main character Shu has the strongest willpower and emotional stability I've ever seen in any character. Can ANYTHING break this kid? The only thing the viewer has to depend on is Shu who never seems to lose hope in the face of horrible situations and bleak odds. The show contains torture and training of children to kill in battle, so I wouldn't recommend it for the weak of heart. This show will bring your mood down like nothing else.
You'll never look at life the same .......2004-10-16
Like some other people who wrote a review I rented now and then here and there from a local blockbuster and if I didn't see the first episode on comcast I may have never seen this wonderful anime creation. This is one of the best drama anime serie's i have ever seen. This serie's is almost like Escaflwone but very depressing as in There Is No Hope. I don't like to spoil reviews by revealing things about the story so I only encourage readers to see it.This is such a powerful anime show that it starts to make you feel for the characters right off the bat. Some things in this story are hard to understand like why lalaru acts the way she does evan after act's of good she holds the same face only smiling here and there, and why shu will stop a nothing to protect her, he is so concentrated on protecting her that he doesn't think a lot about his parent's or sister but he makes you love and respect him for his strength and dedication.Even tho this is a depressing story Shu brings a little hope back when it seems to be completley gone. Now and Then Here and There leaves a very strong memory in your mind it makes you appriciate life and see that torcher seems worse than death. Even tho this is a animated show it shows what a lot of children in the world suffer and to see a child this brave and strong go threw this and still keep the will to survive will inspire all .viewers
Prepared to be shocked..........2002-10-26
WOW, this whole series took me completely by surprised. I was not at all ready to be bombarded with so much violence and sadness. The first set of episodes practically ruined my night and I could not get over it (hard to believe that a "cartoon" can effect you so much).
The next night, I rented the rest of the series-glad I did. The whole story is just awesome. Even though the hardships and issues the children are facing are horrendous, it really gives you a picture of how children really suffer in a world without law.
Each character in this series is just amazing. You really feel for everyone of them, from the evil Hamdo to the little boy, Boo. Each situation and background just really hits home.
Shu's pureness and good heart really touched me. Kabuca's (don't know if I spelled that right) horrible situation where he is forced to murder innocent people just broke my heart. Every character was portrayed and drawn magnficantly. The story is very well written.
This anime is for someone who is looking to be challenged mentally and emotionally. Be prepared to see terrible images of little children suffering and people being faced with brutal predicaments. Yet, to some people this is real life. I believe it is good to know that bad things do happen, however a strong, determined heart like the main character Shu to change one world's terrible dilemma.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves anime and also to those who love to experience an astounding drama.
