This 1986 comedy out of Australia is so old-fashioned in its romantic charm that one can't help but wonder what it would have looked like with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in the leads. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine anyone besides Paul Hogan as the title character, a laid-back Aussie tracker who shows an American reporter (Linda Kozlowski) around bush country, then accompanies her to New York City. Sure, Hollywood has done the fish-out-of-water scenario to death in the last 20 years, and while this film has sufficient sport with the gimmick, it is largely driven by the principal characters and their developing love affair. Hogan cowrote the script and director Peter Faiman evokes the goofy, enchanted air of screwball comedies. The climactic scene, set in a subway station with scores of bystanders witnessing a conversation about relationship commitment, feels like vintage Capra. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Time For A Reappraisal?.......2007-05-18

This film is not considered 'cool' these days due mainly, I think, to lazy TV schedulers who will run a butchered version of the film on Sunday afternoons because it's a 'good family film'. I've caught this film on TV about four times and on each occasion it was in a badly cut version but this DVD seems, so far as I can tell, to be complete. The film deserves to be put alongside the best comedies of any era and should be regarded as one of the prime examples of the form(I would compare it to Capra at his best).

I was lucky enough to see this film at the cinema, knowing no more about it at the time, than that it was supposed to be a good comedy. Well it turned out to be a very good comedy indeed. The film offers so much more than just some very funny moments though. Everyone I know who saw it at the time loved it and it was no surprise that it became one of the years biggest hits. It is strong in all areas, well written and directed with good chemistry between the leading actors and an excellent cast who all perform their parts to perfection. Hogan stands out of course and had the difficult task of throwing off the tag 'Australia's answer to Benny Hill' something he manages effortlessly.

It's difficult to realise now how much of a 'breath of fresh air' it was at the time since Hollywood immediately co-opted (or stole) so much of the style and approach of the film for its own projects in the following years.

The film quite naturally divides into two parts. The first in Australia
has a surprising depth to it and a real feel for the place(the Outback)and its people and of course you get to know the characters. The second part of the film is in New York and provides the bulk of the humour but still remains character focused and never descends into pointless gag-making.

It manages to be hilariously funny one moment and sweetly touching the next. Put simply the film is a delight and a joy to watch and can be seen many times without tiring of it.

1 out of 5 stars Really good if you are 7 years old and think an Aussie accent is cool.......2007-04-21

Dumb girl is saved from big ol crocodile by wise outback guy who stabs it with big ol knife instead of just leaving it alone. Because girls of course could never survive in the outback. Natives with innate wisdom.

Sheech.

Every cliché in the book. Can't believe any adults swallow this one. It's going to be below the threshold for smart kids, let alone adults.

Better adventure film: Master and Commander

OK the dumbos who disagree can now press the "not helpful" button, and the smart people can, at least, consider what I've written.

5 out of 5 stars That is not a knife... this is a knife..........2007-04-14

There seems to be a recipe for making great movies, and this film has all the ingredients. Adventure, action, romance, and great comedy.

A modern day Tarzan, Crocodile Dundee is simply one of those movies we must see. Paul Hogan is superb as he plays the audacious and brave hero out in the wilderness of Australia. Linda Kozlowski is the reporter who sets out to surface the story of man who was attacked by a crocodile and survived to tell the story.

Mick, as he is known by his friends... and he has many... has never set out foot from his environment. Invited by the reporter, he travels to New York City, where great adventure ensues.

New Yorkers are not ready for someone like Crocodile Dundee, but soon, they find themselves admiring and becoming friends with this simply, kind, respectful, and courageous visitor.

The end of the movie is one of the best scenes, capturing great love, and how, total strangers can become instrumental in bringing a relationship to its climax.

Don't miss this movie and you will find yourself saying... "That is not a knife... this is a knife!"

4 out of 5 stars Good Memories!.......2007-04-03

This had more dialog and alittle more skin than I remember, but the humor and storyline are just as much fun as when it first came out!

4 out of 5 stars "Call that a Knife?".......2007-03-26

Took me a while to get around to watching "Crocodile Dundee". Only just did this year, which I feel a bit funny about, being Australian. I'd kind of seen bits of it on the TV and stuff, but I wouldn't say that I'd grown up with it or anything. Seeing it, I think it's not too bad. Strange sort of Australia though. There are some parts that are sort of authentic and some parts that are cartoonish and stereotyped, yet its all blended so well that if you weren't Australian you wouldn't know one from the other. It's funny that way. Bit crude in places though, bit blunt I guess....

Mick Dundee (comedian Paul Hogan) is a bit of a character in his hometown in the outback. Though it's illegal to go around killing crocodiles, he has had a tangle or two with the when he's been out walkabout. A journalist from America goes to investigate, and becomes quite interested in him. Perhaps she'll take him home to New York, see what he thinks of her hometown...

It's worth a look for anyone who's interested, I think.

The 1988 follow-up to Paul Hogan's international hit "Crocodile" Dundee is less interesting and more formulaic than the first film, while a silly suspense element about a retaliatory drug kingpin has an air of contrivance. The story reverses the course of "Crocodile" Dundee, this time beginning in New York City and switching to the rugged bush country of Australia, where Dundee and his companion (Linda Kozlowski) run into trouble with the aforementioned villain. Hogan's natural charm keeps the movie afloat and easy to stick with, but the production lacks all the freshness and surprise of its predecessor. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Paul Hogan, the one and only... Crocodile Dundee!.......2007-04-15

Crocodile Dundee II continues its recipe for making great movies! All the ingredients are there; adventure, action, romance, and great comedy.

Our modern day Tarzan is now a bit more mature and the story, while still very funny, carries a stronger message. Mick Dundee, played by Paul Hogan, is still in New York City with journalist Sue Charlton, who is played by Linda Kozlowski. Sue's ex-husband who is also a journalist, opens the movie covering a case in South America, where he gets involved on a story that exposes him to real danger. He is shooting the bad guys when he witnesses a murder.

Mr. Tanner sends the film to Sue but she is not home to get it, Mick Dundee does. The bad guys visit New York City to retrieve the package, taking Sue hostage. They soon realize she knows nothing about the situation, she did not get the phone message Mr. Tanner left for her, and she does not have the package.

Rico, the drug dealer played by Hechter Ubarry, is the type of villain that will do whatever it takes to achieve power and wealth, and knows the pictures would not only compromise his plans, but they would prove how corrupt his organization is.

Mick Dundee is able to save his lady from the kidnappers thanks to the help of a gang. Very funny moments are seen as he "bonds" with this group, which soon find themselves captivated by the Australian. As the film progresses, Mick realizes that he is out of his element and that if he is to have a chance at avoiding the danger represented by the drug-dealers, he must travel back to Australia, where "he can see them coming."

Back at home in Australia is where the real fun begins as we now see the bad guys in trouble. One by one, in some of the best moments of this film, we see them succumb to Mick Dundee. One of the best scenes has an aborigine poking at one of the captured villains and Sue asks what he just said to one of Mick's friends, only to hear that... "he is asking whether we can eat them." Of course, the villains faint at the realization that they are no longer in control.

A superb sequel to one of the best characters created... the one and only... Crocodile Dundee!

I am a total Paul Hogan Fan! I like him in everything he has done. Crocodile Dundee II takes his character a bit farther than the first movie. The first movie is a marvelous Love Story, this one shows some of his history. Love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars How one can use sheer human ingenuity to outsmart...to survive in the outbacks as well as in the concrete jungle!.......2006-07-23

I have watched all the three Crocodile Dundee movies in the theatre as well as their re-runs on cable TV at home:

- Crocodile Dundee I;
- Crocodile Dundee II;
- Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles:

I am very impressed by the hilarious antics of Mike Dundee (Paul Hogan). I also like his down-to-earth character.

What I have enjoyed most in watching the three movies is that, I have learned that one can use sheer human ingenuity & creativity to overcome obstacles, no matter how intimidating they are...some life-threatening ones, too!

Just watch how Mike Dundee (sometimes with his side-kick) out-thinking all the predators &/or bad guys in all three movies...in the treacherous hot outbacks of Australia & the mean streets of New York...[When a mugger poked a small knife in front of his face, Mike took out his jungle knife & said: "That's not a knife. This is a knife!"] & the mercilessly cold concrete jungle of Los Angeles.

On the whole, I have enjoyed watching again all the three movies, each with its own engaging story & romantic notion of adventure.

As a strategy consultant/success coach on life (survival) skills, I have added these three movies to my resource repertoire.

How long has it been since Paul Hogan's grizzled but charming alter ego appeared in a new movie? Well, long enough for the character, Crocodile Dundee, and his American companion, Sue Charleton (Hogan's real-life wife, Linda Kozlowski), to have raised a 9-year-old son, Mikey (Serge Cockburn), in the rough-and-tumble Australian outback that Dundee calls home. As with its two predecessors, however, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is no domestic comedy but a fish-out-of-water comic adventure, this time finding Dundee and his mate Jacko (Alec Wilson) relocated in balmy Southern California to help journalist Sue investigate a crooked studio executive. The jokes are predictable (L.A. traffic, Hollywood phonies, yoga) but fun, anyway, and there are some celebrity cameos to spice things up. Australian director Simon Wincer, who worked with Hogan on Lightning Jack, is very effective at keeping this light material briskly moving along even if he can't make it any more memorable than it has a right to be. All in all, this is a pleasant but forgettable experience, a far cry from the Capra-esque leanings of Hogan's first screen outing as Crocodile Dundee. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mick as transplanted hick is used once too often and there is no strong villain to compensate.......2007-05-15

This movie is an existence proof that the same approach to comedy can be done once too often. In this third movie in the Crocodile Dundee genre, Mick Dundee is transplanted to Los Angeles, where he is once again trying to play the hick in the big city. However, that premise fails, the jokes are predictable and when they are not, they come across as dumb. The scene where Mick and his friend are ordering food at Wendy's is too long and very boring. There is another scene where some Hollywood people find out that Mick is from Australia and then ask him if he knows Mel Gibson. Mick replies that he does and it turns out that he is talking about another Mel Gibson that lives near Walkabout Creek. Given that the movie star Mel Gibson would be well known all throughout Australia, even Mick Dundee would know who he is.
Interwoven with all the scenes of hickdom gone astray, Mick's companion Sue is a journalist on the track of crooked studio executives. The villains in this case are not very strong, so they do not provide enough support to overcome the weakness of Mick's role as the continuing dummy. The high points of the movie are the cameos by other celebrities. My favorite was the one by Mike Tyson, where he plays some form of mystic peacenik. The funniest point in the movie was when Mick has his son walk away and then asks the Tyson character to help him up because his legs have locked in the crossed position.
This movie is largely forgettable, although Paul Hogan plays the character of Mick Dundee very well; this third time is a dud rather than a charm. Without some other strong supporting theme, such as the evil drug dealers in the second movie, the plot of Mick as transplanted hick is not enough to make an interesting movie.

4 out of 5 stars Crocodile Dundee is back!.......2007-04-15

The opening scenes of the last of the Crocodile Dundee films is reminiscent of Jurassic Park as we see a crocodile's eye open on camera. Great shot. Paul Hogan returns as Mick Dundee after many years. The first movie was completed in 1986, the second in 1988, and this movie brings our hero back in 2001.

The thirteen years have taken their toll and both Paul Hogan, as well as the leading lady, Linda Kozlowski now look more mature. The chemistry is still there! At first, we see Mick attacked by a monstrous crocodile that destroys his boat, making him seek the safety of a tree branch.

His friend and mate, Jacko, played by Alec Wilson, joins him and both end up on the tree. A prelude to a very funny movie. Sue is called back to the U.S.A. by her father, but this time they travel to the Los Angeles branch with their son Mikey, played by Serge Cockburn.

While in Los Angeles Mick continues to be a fish out of water, his expertise with animals, his survival skills, and his great charm serve to make him rather successful. He gets involved in helping Sue investigate crooked studio executives, and resolves the mystery of what and how they are smuggling into the U.S.A.

An excellent movie to close one of the best series ever produced.

1 out of 5 stars Hogan's halo hailed on by this half-witted horror..........2007-03-31

The first two films were wonderful fun, and worth repeat viewing. I only managed to sit in the theater until the end of this one by mustering great fortitude. Compared to the first two episodes, "Los Angeles" is lamentably lame. Skip it.

5 out of 5 stars After All These Years Mick Dundee Now Looks Like A Crocodile!.......2006-09-01

After the success of the original Crocodile Dundee there was only one way for Paul Hogan's star to go and that was on a downhill run. In this movie we have the tiresome "fish out of water' theme which has been literally "done to death" over the past 30 years and leaves the viewer with nothing original to watch.Sadly by now Mick Dundee's skin looks about as old and wrinkled as the crocodiles he used to hunt and LA is not the place to be if you are a tired old man. Forget the plot , it's just nonsense about drug smuggling.Gee.Isn't that an original idea about LA ? I give this film 5 stars because Paul Hogan had ther audacity to make yet another movie which was not set in the Australian Outback which is what most American viewers want to see in the first place.

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars How one can use sheer human ingenuity to outstmart...to survive in the outbacks as well as in the concrete jungle!.......2006-07-23

I have watched all the three Crocodile Dundee movies in the theatre as well as their re-runs on cable TV at home:

      - Crocodile Dundee I;
      - Crocodile Dundee II;

This is a knife!] & the mercilessly cold concrete jungle of Los Angeles.

On the whole, I have enjoyed watching again all the three movies, each with its own engaging story & romantic notion of adventure.

As a strategy consultant/success coach on life (survival) skills, I have added these three movies to my resource repertoire.
