A baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one, this one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell them. But the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of. Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest; Snipes also had his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:
Funniest sports movie ever!.......2007-06-27
This movie is my all time favorite sports comedy. I have watched this movie over and over with the same results, tears coming out of my eyes. I was happy to find it on Amazon after going to Blockbuster and being told it was only available on VHS and not DVD. If you like baseball then you will love this movie.
Best Sports Comedy Ever.......2007-06-09
This movie is a classic. They don't make good movies like this anymore. Great story line, great casting, and a happy ending. Baseball fan or not, you need to check this out. If you've already seen it, buy it anyway. I've seen it 100 times and could watch it 100 more.
Top five.......2007-06-08
I'd place this comedy in the top five of good baseball movies (probably at #5). Everyone in it seems to be having fun, and that always helps the audience to have fun, too.
Major League.......2007-06-03
Funny movie. It had been years since I had seen it and it was great to see it again.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-05-24
Always loved this movie and will continue to love it. A true classic!

Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is having a bad day. His girlfriend Jane (Kelly Preston, stunning as ever) says she's leaving, and his boss (Brian Cox) says he's selling the business and ace employee Billy may be out of job. Sounds like business as usual for an old-fashioned veteran. However, the business is baseball and for Billy Chapel, the 40-year old former all-star for the Detroit Tigers, it means his career--and his life--is at a crossroads.
Although it is no Bull Durham, For Love of the Game finds a solid and very believable role for Costner. The film is based on Michael Shaara's (The Killer Angels) stream-of-consciousness novel (the rough manuscript was found after his death 1988). The entire film takes place on Billy's day on the mound against the Yankees, a meaningless late-season game for the Tigers, but everything for Billy. In flashbacks, he lingers over his long relationship with Jane and his baseball career (from World Series heroism to a career-threatening injury). His one viable link to the game at hand is his catcher, played winningly by John C. Reilly. Costner, like Chapel, is looking for one more great performance, but the film is too simplistic and loopy at times to resonate. The love story has an extra helping of cuteness, and legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully nearly takes on a leading role, waxing grandiloquent. It's no grand slam, but a solid double. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
"You and Me...One more time!".......2007-05-08
Those were the words of "Gus", John C. Riley(the more i see of this guy the more i like him)is the big hearted, battle worn,FAITHFUL,TRUSTY O'l catcher in this baseball guy movie turned LOVE STORY. This is the story of Billy Chapel. A once great pitcher for the Detroit Tigers on the brink of retirement. It's a story of a man who's got the biggest decision of his life/career to make...being traded by the new owners of the ball club and keep playing but for another team other than the only team he has ever known Professionally...or retirement?...If you're a use to be athlete...this tugs at your heart, taking you back to the last time you were able to suit up and play the greatest game in the world...baseball! Billy is a man who's obviously in love with the game and is having a heck of a time letting her go. Now by using the word "her'...i can describe both the game of baseball and Billy's "on again, off again" relationship with Jane Aubrey(the very Beautiful Kelly Preston), a New York Fashion magazine Editor who's more than a lil' hesitant with Costner's character's old school approach with their realtionship. Billy thinks (like i and countless other guys have) like a typical guy who takes advantage of a good thing to the point that he drives it away. Billy is old school and he isn't willing to commit to Jane, which she deperately needs him to do. Jane has been done wrong in the past more than a few times. She's a single mom of a teenage girl( played by the very CUTE Jena Malone)who's starting to challenge her mom's ways. In all ways this movie is just about life! Single parenting, being a stubborn man, relationships with friends, saying goodbye, the love of a good woman... and o'h yeah...the deepest love a man can have for the game of Baseball. The movie is set during the last game of what has been a very rough season for Billy and the Tigers. Inning by inning Billy goes through refections of his relationship with Jane and Heather(Jena's character), his career as a dominant pitching god for one team, the Detroit Tigers & everything from a career threatning injury and just plain old woman trouble. He's had a good life as a ball player but his career is coming to a close and now he has the decision of retirement or playing for another team. All the while his heart is with Jane but he is too stubborn to tell her how he really feels and just about pushes her completely away. Like a typical guy, Billy realizes and goes after her at all costs...Did i forget to mention the fact that this is all going on during a game that Billy just so happens to be pitching a perfect game in?...news of the sale of the Tigers forces Billy's hand to make a decision of retirement or trade...this triggers Billy's reflections. He realizes that's he's in love with Jane and he needs more than just "the game" to be complete in life. In typical Movie fashion Billy pitches the perfect game, retires, and goes after Jane. In the ending scene,Billy pours his heart to Jane at the airport in New York...he palns to chase her overseas but by chance she delays her flight to watch the game and is wrestling with her own feelings for Billy and trusting him. All in all, this is a great movie especially for the Costner buffs out there. I personally love all of Costner's baseball movies and i'd put this one at the top of my personal list! This is not a movie to rent, it's a definate buy!!! Billy Chapel is the man everybody wants to be and the man that no man wants to admit that he is...?!
Baseball: Metaphor for life.......2007-04-24
This movie wasn't really at all about baseball, but about the metaphor for life baseball is. Overall if you are looking for a film that is going to capture what baseball represents, then this is it!
Why it is called "America's Favorite Pasttime".......2007-03-28
Whether you love baseball or not, if you love a good movie, you will love this one. It is told in a unique and clever use of present time and flashback. Kevin Costner, what can I say? He had to be a ball player in another life. John C. Reilly looked as natural as a catcher on the diamond as he did on the stage as a song and dance man in "Chicago". Kelly Preston, my first time seeing her left me breathless. A superb job. Maybe I'm prejudiced because I do love baseball, but so will you after this. And you too may learn to hate the Yankee's fans.
one of the best.......2007-02-20
one of the best baseball DVD's out.....Follows the life of a washed up pitcher, as he flirts with immortality.....I recommend to any baseball fan
Nice date night movie!.......2007-01-31
Add one part love story and one part baseball sports flick and you have a great date night movie! This is a wonderful movie to watch. Kelly Preston and Kevin Costner do really great jobs of playing their roles in this movie, but more importantly the storyline is really well done. Costner plays an aging professional pitcher at the end of his career. On the last game he pitches, we see not only what is going on in his mind as a professional pitcher, but also flashbacks of his career over the years and his on again/off again romantic relationship with Preston's character. Definitely worth watching

Those diehard Cleveland Indians that went from worst to first in the hit original now cope with fame and its perks as the hangdog team tries to hit, hustle and joke its way back to the top. Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Corbin Bernsen star.
Customer Reviews:
Major League 2.......2007-06-03
It was a pretty good movie and I enjoyed seeing it again, but why were they playing in Baltimore's Camden Yards? Cleveland Municipal was still open, but Jacobs' Field wasn't opened until 1994.
Major League 2.......2006-07-18
Ok. As this movie follows on from the first Major League movie, expect laughs and a couple of new faces. It continues with the same players who end up coming back to play for another season. The "Wild Thing" has gone commercial, is always looking at selling something, you have Roger Dorn who now owns the team and is slowly going bankrupt. The team morale is down and they end up on a losing streak and then the witch comes back and buys the team back again. Watch for the part with the japanese warrior and pedro exchanging the phrase of "losing your marbles". Great movie for those who are interested in a quick laugh while enjoying watching baseball.
The Indians Are Back!.......2006-01-15
The boys from Cleveland are back to prove that last year's team was no fluke in this great sequel film. After winning their divison, the Indians were defeated by the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS. After losing, team owner Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) sold the team to former third baseman Roger Dorn (Corbin Bernsen). Roger then brought in high-priced free agent catcher Jack Parkman (David Keith) to bolster the Indians line up. However, incumbent catcher Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger) is still on the team, along with another catching prospect, Rube Baker (Eric Brushotter). Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), Willie Mays Hayes (Omar Epps), and Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) also return from last year's team, along with manager Lou Brown (James Gammon).
Hayes starred in his own action movie in the off-season, and also tried turning into a power hitter, much to the chagrin of manager Brown. Cerrano discovered Buddhism, and now treats everybody as a friend, even the opposing players during a game. Jake's knees finally got the best of him, but Lou asks him to stay on as a coach. Roger soon finds out that he's in way over his head. He overpaid Rachel for the team, and now he has only enough money left for two months of operations. His first move is to trade Parkman to the hated White Sox for outfielder Isuro Tanaka (Takashi Ishibashi). Tanaka immediately challenges Cerrano, saying he has "no marbles". Roger's second move is to re-sell the team back to Rachel, much to the horror of everyone else! Rick Vaughn has shed his "Wild Thing" image. He and his agent/girlfriend Rebecca Flannery (Alison Doody) have concentrated on getting commercial advertisements and endorsement opportunities. Meanwhile, Rick has lost a lot of the zip off of his once-blazing fastball, and he's now getting hit hard by opposing teams.
Their season starts out rather slowly, just like the previous year, and to make matters worse, Lou Brown suffers a heart attack and is forced to step down as manager. Jake is given the job as manager in Lou's absence, and it falls on his shoulders to mold the team back into winners. Will Jake be able to get the team back on track. Will Rick, Willie, and Pedro re-discover their lost talents?
Many times, sequels fail to live up to the success of the original film, but that is not the case with this excellent movie. Major League 2 is every bit as good as the original. Having everyone except Wesley Snipes back from the first movie helped to make this movie so much fun to watch, and Omar Epps does a fantastic job taking over for Snipes as Willie Mays Hayes. Newcomers David Keith (Parkman), Takashi Ishibashi (Tanaka), and Eric Brushotter (Baker) add new flavor with their new characters, and Bob Uecker returns as the zany Indians announcer Harry Doyle.
I give this movie my highest recommendation. Baseball fans will surely enjoy watching the Indians in their chase to win the World Series.
Not up to the standards of the original.......2005-12-21
While the original film was great and is one of my all-time favcorites, this sequel in no way comes up to the same standards of humor or storyline. In fact, it comes off as a blatant attempt to squeeze a few more dollars off of the original films followers. You don't need to believe me. Try renting it before you put down hard-earned cash on this wannabe...
good to the last drop.......2005-08-31
always somewhat skeptical when it comes to sequels. major league 2 right on target. answers some questions from number one and makes you keep laughing. good, good, good

Major League: Back to the Minors
On this team they don't just throw screwballs, they put them in uniform! Scott Bakula plays a minor-league manager on the spot to turn a squad of sad sacks into title contenders in another hit sequel featuring Corbin Bernsen, Dennis Haysbert and the inimitable Bob Uecker.
Customer Reviews:
Major League 3: Back to the Minors.......2007-05-13
The plot it predictable and the acting mediocre. If you are just looking to kill some time and watch a movie strictly for entertainment that requires no concentration what so ever this is the movie to see. Otherwise the only reason to have this movie is so you have all three in the series or if you have a baseball movie collection.
Back to the Minors.......2006-08-30
Good and funny like the first two Major League & Major League II
It is what it is and nothing more.......2006-05-29
I'll admit that the only reason I even considered watching this film is the fact that Kenny Johnson and Walton Goggins are in it. I'm a huge fan of The Shield and wanted to see the actors in more films. Was I very critical before I saw it? Yeah I was, how could you not be.
Like I said before, the movie is what it is. A goofy, often funny, movie that's almost entertaining the entire way through. Yes it's bad, but it's also enjoyable in that way. It's not trying to be a classic, it's trying to be a fun movie. And in that way I think it's very enjoyable.
Most fans of the other two major league films are very critical of this one. In my opinion, I really don't consider this a film in that trilogy. Yeah I know it shares the name of the other two, but it's just different. It's really just a film on it's own, and that's the way I think it should be seen as.
Shame to the holy name of Major League.......2006-01-16
This is just blasphemy. As a devoted (ridiculously, I might add) fan of the first, and appreciator of the second, I gotta give this one my lowest rating. Fans of the series will find little to enjoy about this made-for-video release.
Clearly, Warner is trying to squeeze every last drop out of the Major League franchise...
It was Good.......2005-10-03
I like Major League: Back To The Minors, I found it funnier then the second Major League movie. Quantum Leap dude was a good addition to the series, I was disapointed Al wasn't there.

AMAZING!.......2007-06-01
I LOVED this movie! It has many funny bloopers and MLB players! I rated this 5-star because there wasn't anything higher!
Waste of Money.......2007-05-18
Don't waste your money on this terrible DVD. The title is deceiving; there are almost no bloopers in it. Instead the DVD is filled with boring interviews and staged pranks that put my baseball loving 11-year-old son to sleep within 20 minutes.
I gave it one star because there is no choice for zero stars.
Spend your money on something else.
OK, but not great.......2007-01-12
This was somewhat funny, but I wouldn't call it great. My 10-year-old liked it a lot. I thought it dragged quite a bit, not very fast-paced. Too many repeats of the same theme. Would have liked to have seen a lot more on-field bloopers & funny plays.
PLEASE, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2006-09-08
I am a very disappointed baseball fan.
I waited a few months for this video to be released. When it arrived to my office, I went home immediately to watch it... I ended up seeing the video on fast play, just to tell I saw it all... it only made me smile (not laugh) once.
It's a pity I cant place no-stars for this...
Do something better with your money and buy a pizza... believe me.
MLB Bloopers DVD review.......2006-07-31
This DVD was better than I could have asked for. It uses footage from the tv show This Week In Baseball [TWIB], and real baseball games over the past few years to cover the silly side of America's Pastime. It goes behind the scenes with a bunch of players including Tim Hudson, Ryan Dempster, select Phillies players, & many others, as well as looking at past characters who stand out in the game such as Tommy Lasorda and Yogi Berra. If you love TWIB's "How 'Bout That" section of the show, you will adore this DVD.
As far as I can tell, every major league team is shown, though some have the spotlight on them more than others. This is a must have for any baseball fan. It's by far one of the best MLB DVDs released in a long time.

Customer Reviews:
Ugh.......2006-07-05
One of the most boring World Series. Whoop de doo, overpaid Red Sox sweep Cardinals in 4 games!
After a terrific come from behind win against the Evil Empire (Aka Yankees), the "cursed" Red Sox go on to the World Series to face the St. Louis Cardinals who had the best record. I was rooting for the Cardinals (not a fan of them) but didn't really care who won. The series was not exciting at all, and this DVD shows that. One of the most boring World Series. *Yawn*
Ortiz Can Cook.......2006-01-08
The best part of this DVD - the DVD extras at the end. As a baseball fan, watching the Red Sox "break the curse" was something that needed to be witnessed. I would say most baseball fans were waiting for a "Bill Buckner" moment. The supposed curse that came when MVP Manny Ramirez made back to back errors and the Cardinals Jeff Suppan baserunning blunder wasn't even covered. Comparing the MLB version to this one, all I can say is MLB, except for the A-Rod glove slap and Nomar trade, MLB covered the 2004 Red Sox better. Yeah it's the Historic Season, but who's really going to remember the games before the A-Rod fight. Plus the editing was recycled. Whenever the Red Sox struggled, they showed the same little boy with the painted face grimacing. They showd Yadier Molina striking out for every R. Sox pitcher doing well and the same footage of the man with the cap shaking his head both in 1986 and 2004. There's more I'd cite, but you get the idea. True Red Sox fans I'm sure will enjoy this, but as a baseball fan, it's a decent DVD and the Orland Cabrera handshakes, Cooking with Ortiz, Rolling Rally parade and player profiles are the better part of the DVD. MLB covers the 2004 championship much better.
Very Disappointing.......2005-10-11
This DVD does disservice to a season with so much drama. There was so much more to the season than the Yankees rivalry and the crazy hair.
What about the whole Nomar saga? What about the horrendous defense that lost game after game before the All Star break? What about Derek Lowe making a noticeable imrovement after the upgrades of Cabrera and Mientkiewicz on defense? What about the debate over who would start game 1 against the Angels?
And where's the voice of the fans?
Ok, so maybe you can't include everything in an 80 minute DVD, but at least cover the stuff you do include well. One of the most intense moments I've ever exerienced watching sports was Dave Roberts leading off first base in game 4 of the ALCS, and all they included was the steal. And how about including Mueller's entire at-bat afterwards?
By the end of the DVD you get the feeling they were cutting corners so they could get it out before Christmas and cash in on the historic season.
If you want a DVD that will convey the true emotional rollercoster of the 2004 season, look somewhere else.
A must for every Red Sox fan.......2005-09-23
Nothing compares to the feeling of the 2004 championship season for the Red Sox. This DVD lets you relive the goosebumps and tears that went with it!
McDocumentary.......2005-07-01
The 2004 Boston Red Sox are hard to believe. After a regular season filled with intrigue and plain good-old baseball, the team dropped the first three games in the playoffs against the vaunted Yanks, seemingly setting up their fans who had had their hearts so cruelly broken exactly one year before. But in an historic comeback they won four games in a row and used this momentum in the World Series to carry themselves past the Cards in a decisive fashion. If all this wasn't epic enough, on the night the Sox won the Series, a rare lunar eclipse with a distinct reddish hue overlooked North America.
So, when it came to making the highlights reel, you'd think producing a documentary filled with drama would be a no-brainer, right? Well, despite the heroics, philosophy and mythology waiting at the ready to be tapped, Faith Rewarded is a show long on sound bites and short on the actual drama of baseball.
It begins promisingly enough, with a shot of the lunar eclipse, Keith Foulke delivering his final pitch of the series, and that dratted Aaron Boone from 2003. Then come highlights of the first few games, which are not that interesting. Then we fast forward to July and the famous fight between A-Rod and Varitek. Of course, the game's real highlights included a Sox comeback and Mueller's walk-off HR. But we don't see any of the comeback. And though we see Mueller hitting the dinger, we don't see him celebrating with his mates; instead, we five boring interviews. And if that wasn't bad enough, after this we get goofiness about the Red Sox' hair and very little play-by-play. Some of the plays are sped-up (an effect also used on This Week in Baseball, to the show's detriment. Memo to TV producers: baseball doesn't need special effects to make it interesting).
We see zero of the exciting late summer Angels series. Then against the Yanks, we see a batter swing and then cross the plate, without any explanation as to what just transpired. And then we have a guy hit the ball, and then we immediately see a throw arriving at the plate. For some reason, the producers felt they needed to cut out the two seconds that occur between hitting the ball and the end of the play. I had heard that the MTV-generation had a short attention span, but this is ridiculous.
In the playoffs against Anaheim, the clips of the first game are so muddled, you can't tell what's happening. We do see Ortiz hit the HR that won the series, but again the producers felt it'd be a waste of time to show him rounding third and head for the arms of his teammates.
Against the Yanks in the playoffs, the Sox made an incredible comeback in game 1 but we don't see it; for games 2 and 3, incredibly, there is no play-by-play at all! In game 4, a game that is easily one of baseball's most dramatic, we don't even know who walked in the 9th to set up Mueller's single to score the tying run. In game 6, the fact that Schilling busted a gut (and an ankle) is given short shrift. In game 7, we see Damon's grand slam; but there is no build-up to it, no context. Same with Ortiz' HR-he's not even identified. All of a sudden, it's the end of the game and the Sox win.
If that wasn't bad enough, the World Series coverage is virtually non-existent. All we get in game 1 is Ortiz hitting a HR. Game 2, we get no highlights at all. Game 3, we get a few highlights of Pedro pitching, but we don't even hear how the Sox won or what the final score was. And for game 4, we get nothing, except the Sox and their fans celebrating. We got more coverage of the first few games of the season than we do of the entire World Series.
A story dying to be told and which began with that mythic Red Sox moon doesn't even show us the moon at the end. The overall feel of this video was that as it went on, the producers just wanted to get it over with. Poor writing and no sense of drama made me quite disappointed with this disc. Baseball is all about narrative, storytelling, and taking your time. I wonder if the Sox organization made their own in-house highlight reel; I'd gladly trade Faith Rewarded for it.

Product Description
The 1987 World Series was the first to be played indoors and the raucous Minnesota Twins fans did everything they could to blow the roof right off the Metrodome. Record-books will note this Fall Classic for Kent Hrbek's Game 6 grand slam, while Twins fans will never forget the thunderous, homer-hanky waving crowds that propelled the Twins to a record-setting four home victories. 1991 was even more remarkable. Considered to be one of, if not the greatest World Series, the Twins battled through seven extraordinary games. Kirby Puckett's stellar Game 6 including his game-winning, 12th-inning home run was matched the next night by a game for the ages. The Twins captured their second championship with a Game 7, 1-0, 10-inning victory from Jack Morris.1987: Minnesota Twins vs. St. Louis Cardinals 1991: Minnesota Twins vs. Atlanta Braves
Amazon.com
Vintage World Series Films: Minnesota Twins collects the two hour-long films summarizing the highlights of the 1987 and 1991 World Series. But both would be good candidates for a Complete Collector's Edition, especially the 1991 series that is still considered by many as the greatest ever played. The core of both teams was the same: manager Tom Kelly; hitters Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek; and pitchers Frank Viola and Jack Morris, supplemented by the likes of Gary Gaetti, Jeff Reardon, Scott Erickson, and Chuck Knoblauch--and of course the Homer Hanky-wielding fans turning the Metrodome into a house of horrors for opposing teams. After beating the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987, the Twins faced the Atlanta Braves in 1991. They came from behind to win, propelled by Puckett's huge bat and glove in game 6, followed by Morris's 10-inning complete-game shutout in game 7. Both individual performances were among the greatest in World Series history, and whenever a case is made for Morris's entering the Hall of Fame, his 1991 game 7 is always considered Exhibit A. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
A Moving Experience.......2007-06-22
I was 13 in 1975 and of course these games are a part of my experience growing up in Cincinnati. But I have been living overseas since the 80's - far removed from baseball. Just watching Pete Rose up to bat the first time in the first inning of game one was a completely moving and emotional experience. That round sets the tone for the rest of the games. And somehow I noticed, the baseball I've seen recently does not measure up at all. Baseball lost something in the 30 years that have gone by. The players all seem faceless to me, the games mechanical. This wordl series is baseball played by the gods.
I highly recommend this set for anyone who has missed baseball for a while, or as a present to introduce the sport to someone in a non-baseball country.
Count this review 10 stars, please.
Excellent DVD.......2007-05-07
As soon as I began watching these DVD's, it was almost like I was sitting in my parent's living room just 31 short years ago. The quality of the DVD was excellent...almost like it was live right now. I have been a Reds' fan for my entire life and this DVD brought back all of the great moments of The Big Red Machine. This is a DVD that all Reds' fans must have. Your Reds' library is imcomplete without this treasure.
OMG, this is REDS baseball Heaven.......2007-04-24
If you are a REDS fan, this is stepping back into time to one of the greatest times in baseball history. What can be said about this except can we also have the 1976 and 1990 World Series and playoff games as well. I can watch these everyday without tiring of them, just incredible. Takes me back to being a kid again and all my hero's are there for me to love all over again. A must buy for any Reds or just baseball fan.
Kentucky Mommy.......2007-03-08
I don't think I've every purchased a birthday gift that my husband has loved as much as these DVDs. And (we) don't think there was a greater group of ball players than the "75" reds. So worth the money! And, P.S.,Peter Rose still deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame!!
Maybe the best Series ever, but product not the best.......2007-01-22
What holds this set back from a full five stars are the audio glitches. Along with the Game 1 ten-second delay, there is another game where the audio is a little off from the video. Speaking of video, the video quality of the games are generally good, however there are some exceptions. I'm glad that MLB is releasing these classic World Series games on DVD. This one is very good, without the audio mistakes this is an easy five stars.

Well Done!.......2007-05-14
The Babe is a great baseball movie with a few flaws, mostly in the embellishment of the true facts, but it's miles better than the 1948 movie with William Bendix as the Babe. John Goodman gives his all as he portrays Babe Ruth, a man who enjoyed life a little too much. Other strong performances are given by Kelly McGillis, James Cromwell & Bruce Boxleitner. I recommend this film.

John Goodman's role is so realistic that I thought I was seeing the Babe many times! He is outstanding in his role as Babe Ruth. Hollywoood liberties, sure ...... but an excellent story and a look at an Baseball hero ........... A must for baseball fans.
A Great Baseball Movie........2006-08-10
A highly enjoyable baseball movie. John Goodman give a good potrayal of the famous slugger. From his rookie year with the Boston Red Sox,the New York Yankees, and his retirement from the Boston Braves.Watch how he responds to a bad call from the plate umpire, saying he ought to get his eyes and ears checked.Babe Ruth was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox,and in his last year with the Boston Braves, but played outfield with the New York Yankess. Now maybe the film exaggerates the antics of Ruth, but Goodman's potrayal makes them beliveable.
too close to a caricature.......2006-05-11
Be advised that after 45 minutes of the movie my 8 year-old son and I gave up. Goodman seems to have been given the license to "go for broke" with a "larger than life" approach, that leaves little for the viewer to consider of Ruth's actual life. With the broadest of strokes, Goodman plays Ruth self-consciously; the mis-en-scenes are without any surprises and Hollywood-predictable.
Too little was shown to give us the sense of Ruth-as-athlete and the milieu of early 20th century baseball, a fascinating story that awaited telling but missed the opportunity here.
Good baseball movie, but not what it should have been.......2006-03-21
Probably the most famous baseball player of all-time, Babe Ruth should definitely have had a movie done about him, and "The Babe" is a decent effort, but is not without flaws. First, there are many inaccuracies in this movie, but I won't go into that too deep. At the end of the movie (1936), The Babe is spitting up blood during the game between the Braves and the Pirates, but Ruth did not pass away from cancer until 1948. Certainly Ruth did not have cancer in 1936.. There's many other things, but I don't need to list them all.
But the thing that really bothered me about this movie is that Ruth is portrayed as nothing more than a bumbling idiot while he was with the Red Sox. While this is good for a few laughs, it really took away from my enjoyment of the first half of the movie. I'm thinking "THIS guy is Babe Ruth??" However, as soon as Ruth is sold to the Yankees, he becomes much more intelligent and doesn't act like a complete dumba$$ all of the time. At this point, the movie takes a much more serious turn, and in my opinion, the last half of the movie is EXCELLENT. The film delves into the Babe's issues both on and off the field, and definitely has some touching moments, and a strong finish to the movie. Too bad the first half of the movie was so silly.. So overall, 1 star for the first half of the movie, 5 stars for the second half, for a final score of 3 stars.
I thought that John Goodman was very good as The Babe, although yes, he was much larger (weight) than Babe Ruth really was at any point in his life, but let's not get hung up on details. Goodman was a good fit for the part, and Kelly McGillis was excellent in the supporting role of Claire Hudson.
All of that said, if you're a true baseball historian, you will find plenty to complain about with "The Babe", but if you just want a fun baseball movie to watch, then I would definitely recommend it. I would hope that someday a movie is made about Babe Ruth that is more historically accurate, and has a much more grand feel like the movie 61*, because this telling of Babe Ruth's life just isn't quite the home run that it should have been.
