Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis created their popular toque-wearing, beer-swigging "Great White North" hosers Bob and Doug McKenzie on the great TV comedy show SCTV to fulfill a Canadian broadcasting regulation that required Canadian shows to have a certain amount of "Canadian content." Bob and Doug became so popular that they made a hit record (Take Off, with Geddy Lee, nasalist with the Canadian rock band Rush) and this Major Motion Picture--filmed in "Hoserama." Bob and Doug are the Cheech and Chong of beer, so the plot involves the boys's attempt to scam a free case of Elsinore beer from the brewery, which is run by a mad scientist Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who wants to rule the world, like all mad scientists do. Strange Brew's intoxicating blend of hops and malt--er ... cleverness and silliness--earned it a loyal and well-deserved cult following. --Jim Emerson
Description
What matters most in life, eh? Hockey, donuts and beer? A slab of back bacon? And did we mention beer? At least, that's what matters most to Bob (Rick Moranis) and Doug (Dave Thomas) McKenzie when they bring the goofy lunacy of SCTV's "The Great White North" to the great wide movie indoors.

Ever seen a dog fly?

Ever drunk 1000 gallons of beer? In one sitting? And then been unable to find a urinal. But look! There's a building burning!

Ever found a mouse in your beer?

Ever survived underwater for hours, on nothing but beer fumes?

Buy the movie. Just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars STUPID FUNNY!.......2007-06-27

jelly donuts!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Dumb Humor.......2007-04-05

This movie is a farce but very funny in a 1980's kind of way. It exploits all major Canadian stereotypes. The McKenzie brothers are the original dumb and dumber with a norther twist.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Cream fans.......2003-11-21

I ordered this DVD after looking at several others. I wasn't sure what to expect. It is very good. Lots of concert footage(although it seems to mostly be from 1 event). Quite a bit of interview with Ginger Baker, but not much of Eric and Jack. The DVD does a good job of showing the band and it's formation. Could have had a few more great tunes, like Badge, but with these old films you have to take what you get. All in all, a very entertaining DVD. I recommend it for anyone who understands that Cream was a seminal band in the late 60s music explosion and wants a record of same.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2004-06-14

I have just discovered sixties and seventies rock because I am so sick of the modern day junk. It seems like there is so much of the pop bands dressing in black and calling themselves punk. Anyway, I bought this dvd and I have to say it is one of the finest tributes to Cream I have ever seen. It is just an awesome dvd which combines great interviews with the godly material of Clapton, Bruce, and Baker. If you like Cream you will love this dvd. BUY IT NOW!!!

1 out of 5 stars How NOT to film and edit a rock band.......2004-04-18

The music is great, I love Cream. With a great band like this I would hope to see the band play together, the interaction between players is part of what makes a classic band so fascinating. The camera never gets past the head shot and mostly focuses on teeth. The filming is so inconsistent with the music that it is an agony to watch. Wouldn't you like to watch Eric Clapton play his guitar? So would I. Don't expect to on this one. The only solo shot of him is filmed from behind. Like to watch Ginger Baker play a set of drums? Don't expect to see more than him grimace with an occasional corner of a cymbal vibrate by. Jack Bruce is a great singer but his profile is the major visual. Save your money, buy the CDs,listen to the music, this DVD can drive you crazy it is so badly filmed. Hopefully there is some archived film out there, that will allow us to watch Cream perform as a band.

5 out of 5 stars cheap and definately worth buying.......2004-02-26

this dvd is more than worth the 15 bucks i bought it for. it has interviews with the band, some decent live clips (although they do leave a bit to be desired and are occasionally cut short or filmed badly, they are still pretty damn good), interviews with people like alex van halen about the band, and a full band history. is it worth buying? yes is it gonna be the best dvd in your collection? probably not does that matter? not at all

1 out of 5 stars Once again, much interview - very little Music..........2003-12-06

Like so many of today's religious fundamentalists, the "singular body orifice creatures" (not allowed to give an accurate description on this site) that produce DVD's such as this have forgotten the message and worship the creed. Do they assume that all the people who will purchase this DVD's are in some college music appreciation class, because primarily what is provided here are lectures on how & why each song came about from the personalities involved, along with a few snippets of the songs themselves. Have they forgotten that the music IS the message! Once again, three or four track "almost" in their entirety, the rest are just snippets in between interview. I'm not anti interview, indeed the commentary here provided SOME useful insight into the process and the band, but this would have been a truly unique DVD if it contained these tracks (or any track) in its entirety. Therefore again I say, skip this one and keep holding out for that magic Cream DVD that will actually have complete MUSIC on it...
