It's not too surprising that Shag flopped on its 1989 release but found a devoted cult following on cable TV and home video. This featherweight comedy looked like a waste of space on the big screen, but it plays very cozily on the tube, where it lends itself to popcorn breaks and pajama parties. (The lousy title must have had something to do with the movie's initial failure, a problem worsened by the film being marketed as Shag: The Movie, a truly dumb idea.) Shag is in the tradition of Spring Break pictures, a thoroughly formulaic stroll through the conventions of the minigenre: beachside romance, a wild party, one tender deflowering, and lots of rock & roll. The time is 1963, as three gal friends trick their soon-to-be-married pal (Phoebe Cates) into one final all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged to a local well-bred stick (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's tempted by a beach boy (Robert Rusler) bound for Yale (mm-hmm). The so-so material is buoyed by lovely Annabeth Gish, as the supposedly pudgy one in the group, and Bridget Fonda, as a prematurely sophisticated sexpot. After a while it's easy enough to relax and enjoy the girls' breezy adventures, which are served up without the soap opera melodrama of the similarly tooled Where the Boys Are. Great movie. The movie was based on a weekend at Myrtle Beach. I have visited Myrtle Beach numerous times since I was a small child so I could relate to a weekend with the girls at the beach. That made to movie even more special for me. Loved it.

Very enjoyable........2007-01-31

This is a favorite for my family. We've had to buy it about 3 times due to others borrowing the move and never returning it. It takes place in South Carolina which is where I am from. It is a fun movie with good beach music and dancing. Although it's an older movie, it's still a great one.

1 star for the DVD, five stars for the VHS!.......2006-10-02

I guess I was lucky enough to get my hands on a VHS copy of this movie with the original music, which did not include any Chris Isaak or K.D. Lang songs. If this is a period movie (and it should be), then period music should be used in all the versions. It sounds like they couldn't get legal clearance to use all of the original music for the movie, so they replaced songs like "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke with a song by K.D. Lang, who was probably still in diapers in 1963. That's where the movie took a dive for me in a big way on the DVD version and it only got worse as the movie went on. Other songs were swapped out and music was added in scenes, like at the Carnival and the "Wild Night" scene, where the original version had no music.

Maybe if enough fans of this movie complain, MGM will blow the dust off their checkbook and pay the original artists (or their estates) to get the rights to use their music. Some bonus features would be nice too. The least they could do was to allow 60 Minute Man to finish playing in the credits, like it did on VHS. If you are lucky enough to own an original VHS copy, you'll notice MGM did not run the full credits like you would normally see in a movie, which would include the music credits.

bad packaging.......2007-07-03

This is not about the show which i love, but about the packaging.They should have taken all of the individual season set boxes and put them into one big outer box like Land of the Lost. I just got this and the paper sleeves are bad. The glue is peeling and some of my discs are sticky. Good idea with the shag and i like the enclosed booklet but the disc holders are bad! I hope they change this because the discs can be damaged very easily in this set.

YAY! FINALLY!.......2007-06-28

I love it, love it, love it! I've been waiting for years to once again laugh along with those Bradys. The wait has been worth it. Bradys never disappoint! Great fun to see the fashions and hear the lingo of the time.
My kids (12 & 8) are obsessed with the show and don't find it cheesy or "square" at all! Good, clean family TV!

Brady Bunch Fever - Best Collection Yet.......2007-06-14

I am a lifelong Brady Bunch fanatic. This collection is the best I've seen. It includes all episodes over the 5 year series, interviews with cast members and producers, and a bonus CD with 2 episodes of The Brady Kids cartoon and 2 Brady shows done in the 80's (The Brady 500, when Bobby is a race care driver, and A Very Brady Christmas, when Mike gets trapped in a collapsing building).

The Brady Bunch is a piece of a Americana and wholesome to boot. Strongly recommended. My kids are already hooked, thus ensuring another generation of Brady Fever!

I just got mine today and absolutely love it!!!!! Real Genuine Green Shag Carpet surrounding the entire case.
Whats great about this set is that its all the episodes neatly tucked away in an organized wallet type storage case, I disagree with posts that say its flimsy because i toally disagree and can say its not flimzy at all. I love the packaging. What I like about the set is that its the same as if you bought them separately but they throw in a bonus disc which i happen to love. I personally had A Very Brady Christmas on my Tivo for the past 6 months but was able to delete it because paramount included it in its bonus features. I know this means nothing to you but its a great movie becuase it came out in the 80s and had all the kids grown up and was very much a family reunion it did so well that they resurrected the brady bunch a made a go at it again
i dont think the ratings did as good as expected but the pilot the brady 5oo is included and in many ways
is a follow up to a brady christmas
however maureen mcormick is not in it where susan olsen wasnt in a brady christmas
anyways they are good stand alone movies
but they do go hand in hand nicely
it would be nice if paramount would put the bradys out on dvd
its not the same
and alot of poeple are sentimental about the bradys but it still was cool
also included on the bonus disc are 2 brady kids cartoons

my recommendation is to do what i am doing
start from the beginning and go forward

it already has gone down as one of the best shows in television history regardless of time

again bravo bravo for paramount home video putting the entire series out in one set

What I really like about the dvds, are that I remember all of the episodes from my childhood, and it brings back so many wonderful memories. Due to the longer commercial interruptions when it is on tv, some of the show has been cut off. Now that I have the dvds, I can see the full show as it was intended. I would highly recommend this to anyone, both those who have memories of the show, and those future generations with whom you can share this wonderful gift.

Description
