Director Blake Edwards, fresh from the success of the first two Pink Panther movies, indulged his love of classic slapstick comedy with this long free-for-all, which throws in everything but Laurel and Hardy's kitchen sink. The film reunites Some Like It Hot stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, ably aided by a spunky Natalie Wood. The subject is a New-York-to-Paris auto race in the early years of the 20th century, pitting the Great Leslie (Curtis), a goody-goody dressed all in white--even his teeth sparkle--against the malevolent Professor Fate (Lemmon), whose coal-black heart is reflected in his handlebar mustache. He looks like a bill collector from a silent- movie melodrama. Lemmon does double duty, also playing the pampered, drunken king of a small European country, whose laugh sounds like the wail of a cat in heat. The film may be too long for its own good, and you really have to love Jack Lemmon to put up with his over-the-top performance, but it's side-splitting in spots. It's one of those movies, if seen in childhood, that stays in your mind for years afterward. Some of the bigger routines, such as a pie fight of epic proportions, don't work as well as the simple chemistry between the perpetually exasperated Professor Fate and his much-abused assistant, Max (a terrific Peter Falk). Push the button, Max. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Battles, a Social Conscience, & a Different View of France's Liberation. .......2007-06-30

Director Rachid Bouchareb made "Days of Glory" to draw attention to the plight of men from France's protectorates and colonies who served in the French military during World War II but who were denied their pensions after 1959, because their countries had won independence from France. The film is very politically charged in France, where its title is simply "Indigenes", meaning "natives". It inspired President Jacques Chirac to finally address the pension inequities. Bouchareb doesn't hide his agenda or his bias: The North African soldiers in the film joined the French army mostly for money, occasionally for opportunity. They fought valiantly and loyally to free France from German occupation. They were stifled by discrimination and quotas during the war and discarded afterward. The specific events and characters in the film are fictional, though some French towns were, indeed, liberated by regiments of mostly North African soldiers.

In 1943, France's African Army recruits soldiers from Algeria, among them a young shepherd named Said (Jamel Debbouze), and from "goumiers" in Morocco, including Yassir (Samy Naceri), who hopes to make enough money for his brother to marry well. In 1944, the 7th Algerian Infantry Regiment, under the command of French "pieds-noir" Sergeant Martinez (Bernard Blancan) and Arab Corporal Abdelkader (Sami Bouajila), win France's first victory against the German army in Italy. They arrive in Marseilles to much fanfare, where their marksman Messaoud (Roschdy Zem) begins a relationship with a French woman (Aurelie Bouab). Abdelkader is increasingly frustrated with the lack of promotion and "liberte, egalite, and fraternite" for African soldiers, inspiring a minor civil rights movement. But the war goes on, and the Regiment will be the first French in Alsace, as they attempt to hold the Germans off until the Americans arrive.

"Days of Glory" won't pack the political punch for Americans that it does for French, but this is a terrific war movie. It tells a World War II story that we haven't seen before, and it features two of the most compelling battle scenes I've ever seen: Flushing the Germans out in mountainous Italy elucidates the fear of the soldiers in their first battle and the utter randomness of who lives or dies. The defense of the Alsacian town is in some ways the opposite, as we know the soldiers well by this time and hope they will survive. The four North African leads represent diverse types: Unsophisticated Said's boyish devotion to his Sergeant, mature Messaoud who is not savvy enough to see the hypocrisy around him, mercenary Yassir whose dedication to his comrades grows, and idealistic Abdelkader who hopes their service to France will advance the position of North Africans. Viewers inevitably sympathize with those most like themselves, but those characters involve us emotionally in the events. In French and Arabic with optional subtitles.

The DVD (Weinstein 2007): "The Making of Days of Glory" (24 min) interviews the director, producer, and writer Olivier Lorelle about researching the film, bringing the story of their ancestors to the screen, and shedding light on the role of North African troops. The cast discusses their preparation and characters. Subtitled. "The Colonial Friend" (8 min) is an animated film by director Rachid Bouchareb about the experience of Senegalese infantrymen who fought for France and met a worse fate than the North Africans. The animation style is a unique, eye-catching black-and-white. No dialogue. English and Spanish subtitles are available for the film.

3 out of 5 stars Not an Epic - but still a good movie.......2007-06-25

I would not call this movie an epic, not by a long shot. It is good, yes, the acting in fact is very good - but it is no "Saving Private Ryan".

Much of the fighting is small scale, still good, but not to the beach assault scenes that we have come to expect of great WW2 movie epics. The story to be told, is certainly political, and while it is difficult to get emotionally attached or close to any of the characters in the movie you find yourself angered at the manipulation and lies that are used by the French Officers to coerce and cajole the Algerians to blindly continue the fight for their beloved France.

My only criticism of the movie would be that I found it extremely distracting that one of the main characters, Sai`d (actor Jamal Debbouze) went through the entire war with his right hand stuck in his jacket pocket and I kept wondering why? I later found out that Debbouze, lost the use of his right arm in a childhood accident. But surely, in a war movie such as this you would be able to find ample opportunity to write into the script a reason that would adequately cover such a wound - other than just having the arm super-glued into an army jacket pocket??? I mean to take nothing away from Debbouze's skill as an actor, because I thought he did a great job in the part as Sai`d in this movie, I just think it a shame that rather than allowing me to focus on the character he portrayed so well, my attention was constantly drawn to his damn right hand in that damn pocket!!

3 out of 5 stars They were so so days........2007-06-22

The movie is incoherent. The acting is stiff, not convincing.
There are two touching scenes in the whole DVD. One is where an Algerian soldier stepped on a case of fresh tomatoes and said to his French captain "If tomatoes are not given to everybody, then nobody will get one".
The second is where another Algerian soldier rushed to a room and tried to carry his wounded French captain away from the house while the Germans were entering it. They ended up being killed by the German anti-tank gun. Had the soldier just run away by himself and left his commander behind, he would have had escaped death.
The film is good in term of anti-racism. It is worth renting not buying.
Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, the Longest Day, the Lost Battalion, Gettysburg and Gods and Generals are still the only titles on my list of Best War Movies of All Times.

5 out of 5 stars worth owning, a war movie that tackles racism and cultural questions.......2007-06-21

I like war movies, i glanced at the box in the video store, quickly misinterpreted what it was about and rented it.

From this fortunate mistake came an interesting and worthwhile experience. For i knew nothing about the colonial French army in WW2 and this is an excellently done movie, that not only informs but motivates and interests me in the topic as well.

Usually movies with an deeply felt political or social point, loose the film making quality, sacrificing it for the bigger emotional point that the authors wish to get across. It is rare for a movie to have good historical knowledge-it's often twisted to fix predispositions, good film making technic-character development, coherent plot, and good filming, and a deep political point or as this movie does tackle currently hot button topics. "Z" and "The Battle of Algiers" and "Hell in a Very Small Place" are the only other movies quite like this one that i can remember, combining war with political and social commentary and not loosing sight of the need to present the film technically well.

The big point is explained in the "making of days of glory", the usual dvd additional features, for once worth watching and much better than the usual shovelware. That is for those French citizens today of North African (or Sengalese) descent to relearn the sacrifices their grandfathers and great-grand fathers made in liberating France from the Nazis. As a second point, for those French citizens of European descent to be more aware and thankful for the few remaining ex-colonials soldiers in their midst before they die, and to acknowledge that those people in their lives from Africa have long ago paid in blood for their right to be there and to be genuine Frenchmen.

The movie is about racism, judging a person by the color of their skin or the culture of their parents without making any attempt to hear their stories, to see what they have done, where they have come from or what they believe. The movie in a rather nice but complex way shows several ways that racism twists and distorts human relationships. It is also good to see the arena as something other than the US, for racism is not just an American problem but a human one.

The scene with the tomatoes. Only white French troops are given them, the North Africans and Sengalese are not. But as the movie points out, bullets don't discriminate, they indiscriminately kill anyone wearing a French uniform. The scene with the ballet dancers, culture is deeply embedded in us all and we can only see it oftentimes when it grinds into another one and the differences are made obvious to us. When the main character mounts the box and tells the soldiers that both France and the colonials must change, there is a veiled reference to the post-WW2 colonial wars of independence that make the issues of the movie so complex and difficult to understand. When you see the violence with which the sargent responses to the knowledge that he is a son of a Berber women, you can (as all good movies do) feel both his shame and the surprise of the other man at his comment being so hated when it was offered in deep and understanding sympathy. And that is the great value of learning with movies, the visceral, the emotional impact of images and a story told with them. Now i can, and probably will, look into the issue with more reading, but this is an excellent place to learn something about a neglected and important time in recent history.

Pieces of the movie are very attractively done, the uniforms-baggy North African turbans and robes with sandals, in the French winter (how can anyone live in this cold?, a point echoed in me). The fear, the brotherhood of warriors, the French white women plus the Berber soldier and the way society seems to conspire to destroy their relationship, the way some of them steal from the dead. The movie is full of unique and moving pieces that will make it a movie worth owning and watching again, there is too much going on, too many new connections for the viewer to make to be satisfied with a single pass through it.

I think that this movie is a genuine contribution to the ongoing dialogue between not just the European colonial powers and their African colonies, but between Islam and Christianity, racism and cultural conflicts. I need only remember that Augustine was called names because he was small and dark, for Monica was a Berber, to remember that Christianity is not European, not in origin nor in extent. I can hate and fear Islam as the greatest competitor of my faith, but that does not mean that every Muslim is my personal enemy, nor does it mean that i can't respect and honor them for their good deeds.

it is a worthwhile experience, not only for the excitement and passion but for an analysis of the deeper and more important issues that it tries to teach and push us into. thanks to all involved in making this movie and making it available to me to watch

4 out of 5 stars Flawed, but very good overall.......2007-06-16

As a military history buff, I must first say that I am pleased that a film was made at all about this subject, which is little known by most people, especially Americans. World War II was the swan song of the old "Armee D'Afrique", the French colonial army that was similiar in many ways to the British Indian Army of the Raj. Since the vast bulk of metropolitan Frenchmen were under German occupation, or in German POW camps as a result of the defeat in 1940, the bulk of any French Army had to consist of the North African Regiments, from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, along with Senegalese and other colonial troops.
Anyone who has read the book "France, Soldiers, and Africa" will not be surprised by the events depicted in this movie; the treatment of the "native" troops was often shameful and ungrateful, despite their sacrifices on the battlefield, for a country that most had never seen.
The acting I believe was generally good, but the characters were not as fleshed out as I would like; perhaps as result of the number of major characters portrayed. The first set piece battle scene had large numbers, but was weakly drawn, and not that coherent; the final action scenes were better, in my opinion. Uniforms and equipment seemed to be reasonably authentic, but a mention of the U.S. 37th Division was incorrect; the 36th Division would have been correct, but I nit-pick.
Could the film have been improved upon? Yes, but the fact that was done at all, and reasonably well, made it well worth my time.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Great As VHS.......2007-06-27

I'd have to say that I was a little disappointed when I viewed the DVD.

We've owned the VHS for years and my daughter has practically warn it out. She is going to college in the fall and I wanted her to have the DVD version and the fact that it was widescreen was even better. I didn't know that it had won an Academy Award for best sound until I read the DVD case. That would become my biggest disappointment in the DVD.

Having watched the VHS version soooooo many times, we knew pretty much every piece of dialogue and sound effects and thats why we were so sad to see that there were effects that were left out. When Professor Fate is in the sub and Max blows into the communication tube, there is suppose to be wacky sound that is so harsh that Fate is blown over. But in our DVD version, Fate is blown over without the sound effect. The scene looses a uniqie element towards the comedic impact.

We still love the movie and Jack Lemmon steals the show. Blake Edwards has become my daughter's favorite director (at least for his early slapstick comedies).

4 out of 5 stars I love Professor Fate.......2007-03-30

I watch this movie just to see Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk. Very Funny in a funky kind of way.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies Ever Filmed!.......2007-03-12

This is a classic at our house. It's a melodrama made into a movie.

4 out of 5 stars "Brandy! Throw more brandy!".......2007-03-09

This movie is great if you want to spend your time being entertained, not dissecting the problems of the world, trying to follow multiple plot twists, or recoiling in fear whenever someone enters an empty house. Made at a time when being funny required neither bad language nor scatological "humor," the only drawback to this film is the annoying character played by Natalie Wood (who was absolutely luminous in West Side Story).

Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Peter Falk are great by themselves and a riot when together. Jack Lemmon is a stand-out in his dual role, and the pie fight scene is spectacular.

Alhough the timing of the film drags a bit here and there, this is the advantage of DVDS - one click and you can skip that scene. Otherwise highly recommended for simple fun.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-01-30

My father was sooooooo excited when I gave him the movie, he watched it right away!! It was a great childhood memory for him!

If you are a fan of classic jazz, this dvd is a great investment. Loaded with interviews and reminiscing about the most famous photo in jazz, the film is an essential. The extras are entertaining and enlightening. The coolest thing about the dvd are the home movies (in color) taken at the photo shoot and the "point and click" about each person in the photo. Awesome for the schooled jazz fan or those wanting to learn.

He thought this one should be 4 times better, but he hasn't seen it yet. He wants to show it to the seniors at our center (R.A.I.N. Senior Center, Bronx, NY). Writer Ron Shelton (Tin Cup) and former National Lampoon scribe Tony Hendra collaborated on the script for this satire about a boxing promoter (Samuel L. Jackson) who gets behind a white fighter (Peter Berg) after his black slugger (Damon Wayans) is mired in a losing streak. While sharp and funny, it's never quite clear what the point of it all is. Director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) isn't strong enough or skilled enough as a filmmaker to make this level of satire leap off the screen; fortunately, he's got powerful allies in Jackson, Berg, Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, and the rest of the cast. --Tom Keogh

Description

He's the flashiest, wildest, richest, most outspoken promoter the boxing world has ever known. He's the Reverend Fred Sultan, and when the sport's popularity wanes, he comes up with a heavyweight plan to turn things around.

I've noticed that the only people who love this movie as much as I do are boxing fans. If you're a boxing fan then you're going to get all the little inside jokes about the sport that boxing fans can't miss. I think the movie more of a spoof on the Holmes-Cooney fight in 1982 than anything else. Yes the jokes are racial, but boxing is a racist sport. Not that anybody is discriminated against but boxing fans tend to support their own and this movie pokes fun at that. Lighten up people and enjoy the laughs

In my opinion, this is one of the funniest movies made during the 1990's.

Sure it has some racist overtones, but we all need to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes...

5 out of 5 stars why isn't this on DVD?.......2003-01-20

The only thing that could make this movie better is it being on DVD.

This movies is made with very poor quality. I would not recommend anyone buy this. My kids will not watch it.

1 out of 5 stars Needs a lower score than one star........2007-03-20

This is the very worst kid's DVD I have ever purchased. The movie is almost entirely insults and suggestive dialog. The male cars comment on how much they like the girl car's "headlights". Another car embezzles money and gambles with it. What is this movie teaching children? There is nothing of value for children in this movie. Take the money this video costs and buy a bag of rocks. The bag of rocks will be more entertaining, educational, and have more replay value than this waste of time and plastic. Oh yeah, the animation sucks too.

This movie is absolutely horrible. My 4 1/2 loves it, but I'm going to do my best to hide it from him. This can't even be considered a rip off; just an embarrasment. Disney is in no danger of losing money to this thing. If anything, it should make customers mad enough to go out and buy the real thing. Spend the extra $10 and buy the movie Cars. This movie isn't in the same league. It can't be considered competition or complimentary. It's junk all by itself.

4 out of 5 stars Great high tech drama, human interest story.......2007-04-07

The Great Robot Race follows the ups and downs of teams competing on an immensely difficult challenge: to develop a driverless robotic vehicle that can race 212km in the California desert. The highlights of the story are the contrasting personalities, engineering philosophies, and remarkable technological advances just a year after the first race ended in failure.

4 out of 5 stars Faithful to the PBS broadcast program, extras shockingly limited.......2006-12-24

I was a bit dissapointed that more of the extras on the PBS.org web site - such as extended interviews - didn't make it on the disc as DVD extras.

I rated the DVD a 3 because the expected extras, such a subtitles in different languages, and DVD extras, were not present. That's why 4 stars instead of 5.

That's the only complaint I really have, the video on the disc itself is good. It's the story of the human teams and the science and engineering behind the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. The Grand Challenge is a race across the desert in California and Nevada, where only robotic control is allowed. It is told in an engaging manner.

I recommend this disc for robotics enthusiasts, people interested in engineering, teachers and people interested in using robotics to help math, science and software engineering education programs.

The storytelling and video work made it an interesting broadcast.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing as a story, and surprisingly entertaining as a movie.......2007-06-16

SHADRACH (1998) starring Harvey Keitel, Andie MacDowell and narrated
by Martin Sheen (unrecognizable by voice) is especially intriguing as
a story, and surprisingly entertaining as a movie.

Although clearly sanitized, idyllic and obviously intended as a
family movie, specifically watchable by kids of all ages and genders,
the story unfolds convincingly, telling important lessons of the past
and of the present of various economic, social, politican contexts.
Perhaps this will clue-in kids on conversations and topics they need
to pick up, as they grow up.

Based in Virginia, showing a slavery legacy, the story unfolding
during the Prohibition eta (1920's, 30's), it brings to the forefront
how even the humblest, most poor segments of the population are able
to show immense decency, moral fiber and a belief in a Humanity that
too often is discounted by all other segments of the population.
Wealth accumulation, social status and material goods too often is
confused with what is moral, as the be-all and end-all of Life.

Admittedly, Keitel's Southern or Virginia accent is not the most
realistic, nor is his articulation on life, the most natural as he
plays a farmer and moonshiner, on a large farm on the outskirts of a
small town, sustaining his family during the Great Depression.

Indeed, Keitel has a quintessential city-minded demeanor, showing a
nervous, high-strung, stressed out mental process, somewhat throwing
his family off balance from the pressures he feels, even with the
animals and birds chirping outside. His wife, played by MacDowell,
exudes a confident, tolerant, positive attitude contrasting with his
own, yet both actors seem perfectly comfortable and natural in their
roles.

The soundtrack is done to perfection, with a number immediately
recognizeable by Bobby Dylan, with other folk and blues numbers most
closely associated with the Mississipi Delta.

The self-proclaimed atheism of Keitel, from the lessons of life, in
the picture, is compared to his wife's beliefs, that are strong.

The natural inclination of kids to get along, leaving aside mental
strategic, monetary, social, calculated or cultural objectives,
despite their families station in life, is shown.

The fact that a dying elderly Black man, is adopted by Keitel, who
pays his funeral and burial expenses despite utter poverty, tells a
lot about the farmer's character and ability to think things through
by himself, not showing a knee-jerk reaction to norms, mores, taboos
of society at large imposed on him and all others.

For that reason, despite atheistic, Keitel from his behavior and
morality shown, is a deeply religious man, discarding birth control,
social class or racial pigeonholing - "loving thy neighbor" as often
told.

Due to the autobiographical nature of the film, it tells of nostalgia
among the elderly, when wild rivers were clean enough to drink from
and bathe in, birds were in the backyard, the Model - T was a new
automobile, when the notion of cemetaries being compulsory for
burials was only a new innovation and law passed, when bartering was
still possible in the marketplace. Despite the funeral operator's
business - minded, hard dollars approach, he sees that handling the
deceased as an undertaked is more than just running a meat shop.

This is as clean-cut as it comes, for Keitel as an actor, considering
his "tough guy" image from a number of other works, such as Fingers,
or Scorcese's pictures, etc.

3 out of 5 stars A Triumph of the Human Spirit?.......2006-07-26

What a beautiful idea for a film about a time in history when people would be inhuman toward each other, a poor white family unselfishly and desperately seeks to ensure that a dying black man's request is granted. My mother marveled at this. However, I stopped watching the film halfway as I could no longer put up with some of the characters' constant usage of God's name in profanity. Why can't Hollywood choose some other religion's deity to curse? This film seemed insulting to my Christian black household not because of the racism depicted in it (which does leave one uneasy) but because almost all of the sentences uttered by the father in the film had God*@!# in them. I would not recommend this movie for others to watch as the lack of respect shown towards Christians in this regard undermines what could have been an inspiring tale on the triumph of the human spirit.

4 out of 5 stars A small but charming pleasure.......2006-01-13

There are so many good reviews of this film written already that I need add very little.

The acting is superb, the atmosphere of the South excellently portrayed and the comedy and underlying drama beautifully unfolds.

It brought some sun to a cold Welsh winter evening, for which I thank Harvey Keitel, Andie MacDowell and the remainder of the excellent cast. The direction is excellent and in total sympathy with the original short story written byWilliam Styron.

This is an unpretentious film that makes you feel you have spent your time well when it comes to an end. Highly recommended. I am sure you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A definite surprising sleeper.............2005-03-07

In the age of blockbuster, box office hits and over paid actors this movie is such a surprise that it was even made.I was recommended this movie by netflix and at first hesistant to recieve it. but I couldnt( still can't!) get over the story the location of the south and the actors performance. Shadrach made up in his mind at the age of 99 come hell or high water that he was going to be buried at the only place he could call home the Dabney's and to revisted a favorite childhood memory. As an African-American Woman this movie is excellent and i recommend it is also multicultural a lesson for everyone. As a Mom I didnt agree with the nudity

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2005-03-06

This is one of my favorite movies. I watched this with my 10 year old granddaughter because I thought it exemplified the Good Samaritan of which Jesus taught. Also I don't think strong language defines a person's heart or intentions.
Mississippi John Hurt's 'Farther Along' is magnificent as well as the rest of the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars My 3 year old LOVED this DVD.......2006-11-01

I rented this DVD, actually we still have it after 2 months - I need to send it back and buy my own copy.

My 3 year old loves this DVD. He sings along with it and he just turned 3 and now knows all his letters and the sounds they make. We are all forced to listen to Reader Rabbit every time we go out in the van. My 6 year old that didn't know his letters before we rented the DVD has now finally learned all his letters - sigh of relief!

My son really loves this DVD so we are going to purchase it as even after 2 months he still wants to watch it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome learning video!.......2006-06-02

We got this dvd for our 4 year old. He loves this movie and constantly asks to watch it over and over. It doesn't just say the alphabet over and over but it uses a variety of words for each letter of the alphabet. It is a great way to show kids that more than just one word starts with a letter. As a parent, the music can get annoying because it is the same rhythm over and over but who are you buying for? yourself or your child? I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Monotonous.......2006-01-27

I bought this video for my 2 1/2 year old son to give him different exposure to alphabet videos. He loves the Reader Rabbit Toddler CDROM, so I thought the video would be good. WRONG. The Alphabet Song that they use is l-o-n-g and monotonous! The story is ok, but the "not-so-catchy" tune is at the start of the video and is VERY difficult to sit through. If you haven't purchased it yet, I HIGHLY recommend Leap Frog's Letter Factory instead - without a doubt!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Movie, Decent Story, Great Cast!.......2004-10-29

(...)That alone is scary-- I knew it might stink, but with the cast list, I thought it might actually be OK, and it is. It's a HORRID DVD transfer though, but for 1 dollar I can't complain too much!

It's what I thought it was, a TV movie (originally aired on ABC) from 1969 written by TV mogul Aaron Spelling and Produced by the great Danny Thomas Productions, who produced such classic TV shows as The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl, The Andy Griffith Show, etc,.
This film stars Stephen Boyd, a great character actor/leading man known for his roles in such movies as 'Ben Hur' and 'Fantatstic Voyage'.

It features young newcomers such as Richard Pryor and Billy Dee Williams & football star Rosie Grier in great supporting roles as members of an all-black WW II US Army company ('B' Company) in France who are doing the 'grunt' work of the Army. Digging latrines, digging graves, dealing with garbage, etc. Basically getting No Respect. Blacks were considered second class citizens during WW II.

The story shows how Racist Redneck Major Carter (Boyd) is asked to go on a dangerous mission to blow up a Dam held by the Nazis and the only company of men to help accomplish the task are 'B' Company, (the all black company).

They appear lazy and shiftless to Major Carter, who doesn't believe they can help him blow up the dam. Little does he know, they are more than up for the job. Carter asks their lieutenant in charge for 'volunteers', and he picks 6 men, including Pryor, Williams & Grier.

It's fairly standard TV movie fare, and it's kind of neat to see Pryor and Williams in early roles, as well as great black character actors Moses Gunn & Glynn Thurman (Cooley High)--as well as Susan Oliver, a great blonde character actress who appeared in lots of TV drama in the 60's on shows like 'Star Trek', 'Mannix', 'The Wild Wild West',etc.

It's a nice forgotten addition to black cinema, and shows that black men in WWII could be just as heroic as their white brothers. It's an interesting look at race relations in the late 60's context too, what with the Black Panther movement and all.

It's kind of funny how all the black actors have big afros and a few have mustaches/goatees--not typical of WWII U.S.Army standards, but more like1969 fashion. Pryor sports a natty red beret throughout the whole story, too.

I guess I recommend it as a piece of nostalgia. Again, The DVD transfer is Horrid, but viewable.

4 out of 5 stars excellent movie...horrible transfer.......2004-07-11

I was curious about this movie primarily to see the comedic and cinematic development of a young Richard Pryor(pre the Toy and Superman 3 debacles)...the movie in my opinion DOES stand the test of time considering that it was made 34 years ago. There were some cool cameos(a young Paul Mooney in the background)and of course an ensemble cast of some heavy weight & familiar African american actors..i.e..Billy Dee Williams(starring in Brian's Song the following year), Moses Gunn, Rosie Grier, Glynn Turman and Robert Hooks(a superb actor and father of noted actor/director Kevin Hooks). Surprisingly, the movie holds up..an example of this is the reference to the Moses Gunn character being a physics teacher from Howard University who joined the war effort thus surprising the racist Stephen Boyd character for being a learned Black man. My main gripe is the transfer...yes..this was a Aaron Spelling made for tv movie but if the movie was remastered it would have been a hell of a lot more enjoyable to watch...but again...it WAS worth a gander to see some familiar actors during their prime.....it's worth a look.

3 out of 5 stars I thought the movie was ok, for the time it was made........1999-06-26

due to the fact that it is an older movie, it has a good plot, story line and very good acting. it doesn't have the best of sound or the quility of a digial picture. which in point was part of the reason I didn't get into this movie as well as others. but it's worth 3 stars.

Robert Falcon Scott's doomed attempt to be first to the South Pole became a race against his Norwegian rival Roald Amundsen. When Scott and his exhausted men arrived at the pole, Amundsen's flag was already in place, and before Scott and his team lay only starvation and death. Scott had been handpicked at the early age of nineteen as a man suitable to lead a British polar exploration. On his fateful second journey, Scott made decisions which involved taking great risks, and these still cause controversy today. New location footage, specially-commissioned filmed reconstructions and expert authorities bring historical background and provide modern perspective to this unique film
