Customer Reviews:
Nothing is what it seems!.......2007-07-03
A deep, yet entertaining movie that will leave you baffled and bewildered at first; however, don't give up on this film. Good solid acting, incredible directing, and a story with so many questions it leaves you wondering what it is you just watched!
I have always liked Polanski films, as well as Johnny Depp's acting, so this movie (for me) was a must see. I'll admit, the first time I viewed it I was left confused and I said to myself that I regretted purchasing it. Giving it another shot recently, I was able to really sit and watch the movie for what it really is, an intellectual masterpiece.
It may leave you with many questions, but again I urge you not to give up on this movie. It has a message that really blurs the lines of good and evil and shows that there may be both good and evil inside us all. How it ends is really up to your interpretation.
Not what I was expecting, but still good (in a different way).......2007-06-29
Opinions when it comes to movies tend to convey a bit more stridency than those involving music or even television, as if a level of aesthete is involved that is so profound that it evokes a part of one's being... of course, that may just apply to the more catty drama dorks out there.
Anyhow, there are many examples too numerous for practical purposes of documenting. To focus on just one good example would be THE NINTH GATE. Many people disliked this film, and some did so with a hint of indignation. It might have been because of raised expectations, either for their adulations of Roman Polanski as a director, or because it was a film featuring the "divinely magnificent" Johnny Depp (who actually is an exceptionally good actor with a decent knack for picking projects; comments in quotations were not meant as an affront to Mr. Depp, but to those who overly idolize him), or because this film deals with elements of the supernatural including the Devil. If in fact you are expecting a terrifying episode of demonic encounters replete with gore and sensationalism, then you might not like this film, which has a more stately pacing and emphasizes ambiance and atmosphere over glitzy special effects. Others were disappointed because the film only partially reflects the book it was based on ("Club Dumas", which I actually also read - pretty impressive, huh?), although to be fair, the book's structure would not have really been ideal for close adaptation.
I admit that I was really intrigued by the premise, especially when the element of interaction by Lucifer was suggested, because done well it can be fascinating, although it is also runs the big risk of embarrassing failure, given the heightened expectations. The trailers were effective enough, and Johnny Depp picks good movies more often than not, so I thought it was worth a look. The movie was not quite what I expected, but still kept my interest, in spite of the aforementioned moderate pacing and a subject matter (rare book appraisals) which I would not have ordinarily found especially fascinating. It was an intellectual rather than visceral effort, and the acting was actually somewhat effective as it turns out. Though some have incorrectly characterized the acting as being lackadaisical and/or stilted or uninspiring (among the many adjectives used), the director and actors wisely chose a more understated approach, which is more realistic and less (melo)dramatic. As a result, Depp was convincing in his role as a mercenary book appraiser not always above unscrupulous methods, and Frank Langella was quite effective in his role as an accomplished but ruthless publisher and collector, whose sophistication almost masks his sinister agenda. Their nuanced performances were far more appropriate and believable, rather than over-the-top affectations which would have just come off as campy and out of place (Sean Penn and Al Pacino and Tom Cruise need not have auditioned).
The story centers on a book titled "The Ninth Gate of the Kingdom of Shadows", an obscure but legendary tome rumored to have Lucifer as a contributor. Depp's character is Dean Corso, a highly sought though morally relaxed appraiser. He is hired by Boris Balkan (Langella) to find other remaining copies - if they still exist - to determine the book's authenticity. What seemed initially like a thorough and arduous investigation came to include hazardous intrigue, the interventions of mysterious strangers, untimely deaths, and more danger than Corso was prepared for. Along the way, the financial appeal of the lucrative assignment gives way to the need for answers to the danger and intrigue, which in turn gives way to a pursuit of something possibly unworldly and beyond belief. Though some will stubbornly disagree, what makes this film work is the element of ambiguity regarding the book's authenticity and nature, as well as those of at least one other character in the film, and the film's ending itself.
As I am not an easy laugh, I tend to be a challenging audience for comedies. Similarly, I am not an easy scare and do not impress easily when it comes to horror films. Though I am not sure that this would be accurately categorized as a horror film (it could be more accurately described as a supernatural thriller), I will risk the razzing and aspersions and insults to say that one of the more scary/frightening/evocative (as measured by the goosebump meter) sequences I have ever come across in movies is in this film. Polanski is regarded by some as a genius, though not all his films are well received. If you can dispense with any preconceived expectations and approach this with an open mind, there is a decent chance you might find this film's merits as both a creative project and a skillfully crafted effort.
keeps you guessing.......2007-06-27
this is a great movie if you are into dective/thriller type movies. it does move a bit slow in parts. the movie is about a "book detective" so to speak. he is hired to track down a book that was supposdly written by the devil himself.
Worst Ending In The History Of Movies.......2007-06-27
This movie was bad. What was even worse was the ending. I guess they ran out of money and/or ideas when it came time to end the movie. I was left sitting there wondering WHAT WAS THAT?? Johnny Depp should pretend he never acted in this disgrace. The ninth gate? The only gate is the gate to exit the movie theater and forget this disaster of a movie ever happened hahaha.
Ninth Gate.......2007-06-26
Loved the movie for its atmosphere. I read one review in a literary magazine that explained the mysteries to my satisfaction. The main character's name is "Corso" - sounds similar to "cursed one" even though in the movie, he said that it means "one who travels". Johnny Depp looks like the quintessential devil with his goatee and dark hair with gray around the side. The review I read said that the devil had lost his way on earth and needed to get "home". The "guardian angel" provided clues to him and safeguarded him. Remember how surprised she looked when he accidentally bumped into her, causing her nose to bleed. Like she was not used to having any "mortals" injure her like that. Also, he always played up vices, like constantly smoking, drinking, cheating people. One of the drawings showed the "guardian angel" riding the three headed beast (literally - and this is a biblical symbol for the devil)and pointing back to the castle or the ninth gate. When Boris Balkan wanted to meet the devil so badly, he never realized that he really had. An interesting thought, anyway.

The Warriors combines pure pulp storytelling and surprisingly poetic images into a thoroughly enjoyable cult classic. The plot is mythically pure (and inspired by a legendary bit of Greek history): When a charismatic gang leader is shot at a conclave in the Bronx meant to unite all the gangs in New York City, a troupe from Coney Island called the Warriors get blamed and have to fight all the way back to their own turf--which means an escalating series of battles with colorful and improbable gangs like the Baseball Furies, who wear baseball uniforms and KISS-inspired face make-up. Pop existentialism, performances that are somehow both wooden and overwrought, and zesty, kinetic filmmaking from director Walter Hill (Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs.) result in a delicious and unexpectedly resonant operatic cheesiness. The Ultimate Director's Cut doesn't radically alter the movie--some of the editing is tighter, the Greek legend has been added as an introduction--with one exception: in transitions, scenes begin and end as scenes from a comic book. While The Warriors always had a comic book flavor (and Hill, in an interview, says he deliberately pursued that sensibility), this device--similar to The Hulk--seems a bit overkill. But it's a minor problem; the movie holds its own, even 26 years later. --Bret Fetzer
Product Description
A battle of gigantic proportions is looming in the neon underground of New York City. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they're after the Warriors - a street gang blamed unfairly for a rival gang leader's death. This contemporary action-adventure story takes place at night, underground, in the sub-culture of gang warfare that rages from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. Members of the Warriors fight for their lives, seek to survive in the urban jungle and learn the meaning of loyalty. This intense and stylized film is a dazzling achievement for cinematographer Andrew Laszlo.

Many fond memories............2007-07-04
THE WARRIORS. Now that is one of the coolest titles ever for a film. You really don't need anymore than that. It just works.
This film tells the tale of a street gang, wrongly accused of murder, having to fight their way back to their home turf. That's the whole film. You would never think that this simple premise could fill a 97 minute movie's running time, but it does, and does so well.
I loved this film from the first time that I saw it. It was, in fact, the very first film I ever saw on VHS (waaay back when). It seem somehow fitting that I should be writing a review of the Hi-Def.
THE WARRIORS' simple plot is full of great visuals and good fight sequences, well executed (but slightly dated) synth music and a sense of fun that keeps you watching to the end. Who could forget the freakish BASEBALL FURIES when you first see them? By the end of the film you feel every bruise, cut and scrape that they have endured through their long night, and you want the baddies to 'get theirs' totally. The actor who played the rival gang's leader (THE ROGUES) was really creepy.
If have the chance, see this film. you will not be disappointed.
Warriors....come out to play-yay, Warriors...come out to PLAY-YAY, WARRIORS.....COME OUT TO PLAY-YAY!!!!!

Sound and Fury.......2007-05-22
THE CONVERSATION (1974) does age well as a character study. Its technology seems dated, of course. Surveillance today I have no doubt would put that old reel to reel tape technology to shame, in the era of microchips and miniaturization. Coppola likes this little film, and he had trouble initially getting it produced. Only his success with THE GODFATHER allowed him the clout to twist a few arms. As a writer, influenced by Tennessee Williams, he wanted to take his small projects and make intimate films, not blockbusters. Isn't it odd that GODFATHER and APOCALYPSE NOW to this point stand as his cornerstone works, allowing him to do several other less successful smaller projects.
Coppola chose his brother-in-law, David Shire to compose the music for THE CONVERSATION, and his haunting single piano seemed to hit just the right emotional timbre; and then to make Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) a saxophone player, who sits solo at night and wails away, was a wonderful secondary touch. Caul was such a cold fish, such a secretive human being; it was fun to hear complete statements coming from him in the language of jazz. It is an interesting name, Caul, meaning veil or membrane over the face of a fetus; heavy symbolism. Coppola stated that he was heavily influenced by Antonioni's BLOW UP (1966), and he liked the idea that the director's camera was watching the surveillance expert as he "listened" to other characters; working in a mystery that was also homage to Hitchcock. He, like Antonioni, shot abstractly at his characters, through and around plastic a lot; smoked barriers, rippled windows, pebbled glass, and the incessant appearance of Caul's god awful clear plastic raincoat.
Robert Duvall did an uncredited cameo, and Frederic Forrest, John Cazale, and Teri Garr all did fine work as members of his repertory. Allen Garfield did a bang up job as the competing surveillance expert, Bernie Moran. Garr's sweet, yet sad, cloistered mistress cloys to our minds, in her white socks and short blond locks. A nice surprise was how good Harrison Ford really was in what could have been a non-descript walk on. Coppola was impressed with his inventiveness. Hackman found in Caul a character he could barely live with, and he had difficulty shedding it off camera. Still it stands as some of his best work
Haskell Wexler shot the big opening sequence in the park, with the whole surveillance team. Then he and Coppola had an "artistic difference of opinion", and he was replaced by Bill Butler who did a seamless job of the rest of the film. Coppola said he closed down the film four days early because he was so stressed out. The dream sequence with Caul and Cindy Williams in the park, midst all that fog, was supposed to be part of the actual ending of the film, but the fog machine got out of hand, and people complained, sending in the SF police to harass the team. Coppola was faced with providing us with a different ending, and he found a perfect one. Caul, at last succumbed to his personal paranoia, tearing up his apartment looking for the bug Moran used on him, and then sitting exhausted in the wreckage, blowing out his pain in jazz riffs on his sax. Coppola suggested later that the bug might have been in the saxophone strap itself.
You need a lazy afternoon for this one.......2007-04-26
The development, acting and plot progression is exceptional. In comparison with today's Big Brother thrillers, The Conversation appears to be a slow-moving flick. The viewer is gradually pulled inside the head of a burned-out spy who happens upon the conversation of a couple with bad intentions. His feeling of isolation becomes real to the viewer, and you begin your search with the same information with which our spy is equipped. His paranoia and desperation are well portrayed. Getting past the dragging introduction, a viewer can involve himself in the quest of the spy to solve the mystery. Not an exciting film for group enjoyment, yet quality is undeniable.
Over The Top Coppola Masterpiece.......2007-04-25
This is without a doubt one of the greatest personally insightful films that delves into the ambience of eavesdropping and mystery. I beg and incourage anyone who finds this film even remotely captivating to purchase this film.Yes, it doesn't contain action, but it proves that a film doesn't require action in order to be spectacular and mesmerizing. And I can't say that the premise sounds interesting but please believe me that there is more than meets the eye.
In this film Gene Hackman (perhaps his greatest performance) plays a preeminant reclusive eavesdropper hired by the great Robert Duvall to eavesdrop on his wife played by Cindy Williams prior to Lovern and Shirley. That's just a superficial synopsis of this classic. The film also stars Harrison Ford, John Cazale who played Frado in the Godfather. Coppola brilliantly weaves mystery, isolation, loneliness, and conspiracy into this unique picture.
So please do yourself a favor and watch this film instead of the rubbish that is being made these days. You won't regret it.
Better than the "Godfather"(sacrilege to some I know but true).......2007-03-29
Yes I said it and I'm glad i said it,I love the "Godfather" and it is one of the best movies ever made but this is one rung above it. Now that I've mad everyone mad
< let me tell you why I love it this much.
Gene Hackman HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER THAN HE IS HERE. His Harry Caul is a man defined by his work only. He has no real life of his own, he just spies on real lives for his own gain. He just does a job, it's the people who hire him who are responsible for what is done with the knowledge he gives them. All of this changes on his latest job, as he begins to suspect that the young couple he is asked to tape is being set up to be killed. From the first shot to the last heartbreaking, but logical shot Hackman owns this spellbinding movie about paranoia and personal liberties being taken from you. It more than holds up today, even if the technology is now dated. There is no wild car chase or big bangs here only food for thought tied to a very downbeat but fantastic script. Mr. Coppola has outdone himself here and the film is his masterpiece in my eyes. Not one false note or scene in this one,as close to prefect as a movie gets. YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT ONCE YOU SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Fantastic Little-Seen Masterpiece.......2007-03-20
"The Conversation" is a little seen masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola, made in between "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Pt. II." It's a mystery-drama, that plays like a horror movie similar to the Nicolas Roeg film "Don't Look Now" in the sense that works with dread, rather than fright. Two-time Academy Award winner Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul, a wiretapper whom we first meet as he's recording a conversation between a young couple in a park. Caul sees his job as a job, he doesn't get involved with the people he records nor does he pay much attention to the details of the conversation. He's supposed to record it and deliver it. His suspicions begin to grow about the tape when he tries to personally deliver it the mysterious person who asked for it and is instead badgered by the man's assistant (Harrison Ford) for it. At the same time we begin to realize how bad Caul is at his job. His partner Stanley (John Cazale) has quit and has already began working for another wiretapper. The superintendent at his apartment building has managed to get inside his multi-locked apartment to drop off a birthday present. A ladyfriend of his tells Harry about a time she watched his spying on someone for an hour...It's no wonder that when a rival wiretapper comes to his office with him he manages to record an intimant conversation between Harry and a woman. While the mystery revolving around "the conversation" continues, Harry begins deciphering some of the sentences and his suspicions are confirmed when he hears the sentence: "He'd kill us if he got the chance?" This question fuels the rest of the movie, until the very creepy and superb climax. Some of the most haunting parts of the film come at the end and this is due to the visuals of the film. One much-talked about scene comes when Harry flushes a toilet in a motel room and it begins overflowing with blood. This scene (and the few that follow it) are some of the most effectively creepy scenes I've seen in a long time. Gene Hackman is superb as Harry Caul, a multi-layered character that on the page must have seemed very one-dimensional. Harry is a man with no personal life, almost no friends, and he's a man that lives shrouded in mystery. Coppola had already proved by the time this movie came out that he was a cinematic genius, but he's mostly known for movies like "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now." Those films are 3 hour long epic films, but I think to really see how much range Coppola has as a director it's nice to take a look at "The Conversation." Few people have seen this movie, it's a much smaller scale film that most of his movies but it's truly a masterwork. Great acting, great direction, great art direction, and great cinematography.

There was no better director than Howard Hawks at depicting group action. Because of his sense of character and pacing, Air Force transcends its propaganda purpose. It's well crafted all the way around, from the acting to the writing to the aerial fighting to James Wong Howe's painstakingly striking cinematography. A B-17 takes off from San Francisco in December of 1941 headed for Hawaii only to witness the Pearl Harbor attack from above, so it lands and takes off to thwart an oncoming attack. Reassigned to Manila, the crew (which includes the always cynical John Garfield, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, George Tobias, and Harry Carey) is thrust into the thick of battle. Incidentally, Hawks enlisted William Faulkner to rewrite a death scene that resulted in a sublime sense of honor. He also added some epigrammatic polish to some dialogue, such as Tobias's dismissal of California: "The sun shines and nothing ever happens, and before you know it you're 60 years old." --Bill Desowitz

Air Force.......2007-06-27
Good World War II movie if you like old black and white movies. This one is about a B-17 bomber that flies into the start of World War II with no ammunition on board and after landing, tries to get the plane running in order to take off. ONE OF THE BETTER WAR MOVIES OF THE 40'S.
Life Should Really Be Like This!.......2007-06-15
Of course this is war time propaganda. But what makes it so entertaining is its upbeat can do attitude. At a time when the outcome of the war was clearly uncertain, these guys were convinced we were gonna prevail big time and they set out to "prove" it.
We were clearly the good guys. Hell, it didn't even take the lone head case, Sgt Wynocki (John Garfield) very long to come around and see the light. Everybody, and it seemed that "everybody" but the enemy was Irish back then, pulled together for the big win. If it were only this way today!
From Wake Island to Clark Field, the crew of the B-17 bomber, Mary Ann are confronted with one madhouse conflagration after another, with folks frantically running around everywhere trying to regroup with not a minute to spare. As an example, fighter jock Tex Rader (James Brown) is one minute defending is integrity, hitching a ride on the Mary Ann the next, defending his role as a fighter pilot, then fighting along side the infantry after his P-39 "took too many holes" and then eventually back to the Mary Ann, to pilot her to victory during the battle of the Coral Sea.
This dvd package is very nice, though I was surprised there was no insert in the dvd case. The remastered picture quality is excellent. Special features include a radio broadcast featuring Harry Carey, an old Daffy Duck flag waver cartoon and short film, in color, paying tribute to the WACs (Women's Army Corp). I am disappointed that nothing was mentioned about the making of this film and the difficulties Howard Hawks and company encountered while shooting the film including oppressive heat on location in Florida.
This is one of my favorite WWII films which I've viewed numerous times on vhs and Warner CD-R. I am soooo glad it's now out on DVD.
Hey, don't be cynical and overly critical of this film. That's not what this film is about. Just take it for what it is and ENJOY!
WW2 Classic!.......2007-03-03
On their way to Pearl Harbor, a flight of B-17 bombers arrive at the height of the Japanese attack at the start of WW2. After landing they are told to refuel and fly on to the Philippines where they are to fight the Japanese. Many problems ensue but the crew pulls together and takes the fight to the Japanese. This is truly one of the best WW2 movies with lots of action and a relatively unknown cast...stars Harry Carey, Sr, a young John Garfield, and the B-17 "Mary-Ann". The interplay between crew members and the Marines in the Philippines is worth the price of admission alone. A long lost classic finally being released....DO Not miss this one..!!!
Air Force: The "Good" War Becomes a Very Good Movie.......2007-02-12
By the time AIR FORCE had been released in 1943, the Second World War had been going on for nearly 18 months. No sooner had the first bombs fallen on Pearl Harbor than Hollywood began to crank out war pictures, all of which had the same purpose: to remind Americans that we were the good guys fighting to the death against some vicious and slimy foes. In AIR FORCE, director Howard Hawks showed the same deft touches that marked nearly all his actioners: a sense of tension among men at war, all of whom interact with each other in ways that range from petty squabbling to hard-won male bonding. Hawks shot the entire film with rapidly alternating scenes of conflict that appeared and disappeared from the screen in such visual power that the audience almost certainly did not notice the minor anachronisms and flubs that occasionally occured.
The plot revolves around the crew of a B-17, dubbed the MaryAnn from the day before Pearl Harbor to the first air attack on Tokyo. The crew is a mixture of many of Hollywood's best: Gig Young, John Garfield, Arthur Kennedy, and John Ridgely. They hear of the sneak attack on Hawaii and land their plane at Hickam Field where they see up close and personal the damage wrought. Hawks plays fast and loose with some historical facts. There were no recorded examples of Japanese-American sabotage, but the mere mention of that made for some gripping drama. The crew bicker amongst each other, and John Garfield reprises what was for him his essential screen persona as the misfit who has to learn how to fit his square peg into a round hole. Though they do squabble mightily, it is the hated Japs who pay the price. In scene after scene, Hawks shows legions of Japanese who get machine gunned on both the ground and in the air with such stark realism that the film won an Oscar for Best Editing. The audience hears Harry Carey inquire often about the fate of his flier son at Pearl until the death of that son becomes an off screen symbol for all those who died on December 7th. The concluding battle at Coral Sea is the climax of a film that had been pointing to a final confrontation with an enemy that Hawks subtly demonizes in a way that if filmed today would be deemed as horrendously politically incorrect. At the close, there is a brief onscreen epilogue that affirms that the goal of this Good War could be nothing less than victory over a godless foe. Nothing was said about a goal that sought redeployment to Australia. This vogue of movie war making would soon enough pass away so that repeated viewings of AIR FORCE leave the viewer to wonder how the previous generation could agree to squabble about anything except the reason for the war itself.
AIR FORCE Stands on Its Own.......2006-12-12
What a great cast including John Garfield, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, Harry Carey and George Tobias. Garfield as always is full of a lot of raw energy. Howard Hawks is at home with a group of actors such as this aboard a B-17 straight dab at the start of WWII in the Pacific (I don't wish to give the plot away). James Wong Howe's cinematography is always brilliant and evocative of the desired mood intended for the rationale of the story. This film is full of great dialogue expounding the virtues of those values dearest to all Americans.

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Old Time Fun.......2007-06-08
A good movie with lots of known players. Good clean fun. Brings back the good old days. Enjoyable.
Great movie for the dectective at heart.......2007-05-15
Dick Tracy is an action packed classic detective story. The movie features loads of bad guys that each has a unique visual presence throughout the movie. Warren Beatty gives a realistic and believable performance as Dick Tracy himself. For those looking for some nostalgic Madonna action, look no further. She's stylish and sexy in those black outfits she wears.
If you're looking for a fun night at the movies, this is a winner!
Dick Tracy.......2007-05-13
Excellent film! Excellent soundtrack! Seen it time and time again.
Why Marvell Cariaga is listed as the main star, I have no idea. Warren Beatty is the main character.
a good film bad judgement.......2007-02-25
why is itevery time beatty enters the picture with a film hes gotta louse it up by acting in it i know he like to look at himself in the mirror but so dose every other director look at george lucas for example and you dont see him screwing all his films up well not all his films any way take this picture for instantce it could do without the love story and stick to the point of the plot getting caprice this is why sin city was great it stuck to the point second nobody cares for madonna somebody else that could have stayed out of this film ive read dick tracy its no brodway comic strip or disney for that matter frank miller should have taken over the screenplay and did it justice.hopefully somebody else will remake this film but with beatty fighting to ruin the strip yet again in court that wont be happening anytime soon.
Film/Comic Book Noir at its Best.......2007-01-28
With great performances from Al Pacino to Dustin Hoffman, music by Sondheim and Danny Elfman, and beautiful colors and costumes, this is a truly unique and highly enjoyable movie each time you watch it.

Strife-torn America wanted a meat-and-potatoes romance in the late '60s, and the country embraced Erich Segal's slim, generic-sounding novel in a big way. It did so again for the film adaptation in 1970, starring Ryan O'Neal as a law student who defies his rich and powerful father (Ray Milland) on every issue, including the former's love for a music student (Ali MacGraw). The two marry, start life together...and then the Grim Reaper turns up at the door. Directed by Arthur Hiller (The In-Laws), the film ends up lacking the kind of stylistic boost that might have made it a must-see for the ages. But its faithfulness to the book's uncomplicated and, yes, moving intentions is pretty solid. O'Neal is convincing as a nice guy who's as bullheaded in his own way as his steely father (a nice job by Milland), and MacGraw has a way of getting under one's skin. A viewer just has to try not laughing at the refrain, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
Captured Perfectly.......2007-05-28
I imagine that the movie must make Erich Segal proud as it's very true to the novel and captures the characters perfectly. As I read, and re-read love story the faces of McGraw and O'Neal are in my minds. The movie is tragic, and beautiful all at once, just like the book, and is in the same tone and timing as the book. If you loved the novel, the movie will not disappoint you.
Love Story.......2007-04-11
I saw this as a teenager and have always loved it. What a beautiful story of love and loss. It helps you remember how short life is and how important the little things are.
Love Story....I loved it !.......2007-03-09
Great Movie...the quality of the disc was great ! It was very quick getting to me. I bought two copies of it..one for My Parents since I was named after the movies main character. Thank You I will buy again from the seller.
Beautiful.......2007-02-24
I love this rather corny, cheesy love story which has a very 70's movie feel. If you like 70's films you will love this. I am not sure this film would have been well received if it had been made today but with 70's movies you kind of expect a film like this. All in all it is solid on all counts - acting, writing and directing. It has being accused of being morbid and manipulative but I think the subject matter was handled with maturity and in a way was uplifting in the end. Even though you know what is going to happen you can watch this over and over again and each time its a trip back in nostalgia - back to a time when Hollywood still made movies like this.
"Love knows not its own depth, until the hour of separation.".......2007-01-07
The sentimentality of "Love Story" ("What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died?") is a hearty welcome retreat to the past... There is nothing to spoil love, trust, confidence or even the events... Jenny seems to die... She just escapes in loveliness...
Jenny (Ali MacGraw) is half of a pretty young married students from a working class background... And Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) is from a very wealthy family... Both have the predictable problems with disapproving parents... Both struggle along through hard times, until Oliver obtains a fine job with his own merit... When Jenny tries to get pregnant, the doctor finds out that she has an incurable disease, and has a very short time to live...
Ryan O'Neal plays well the intense sensitive rebel, giving a heart-breaking performance as the ultra-rich man's son who works to pay his way through law school when his father won't...
Ali MacGraw is good and touching in her portrait of Jenny, the dying heroine, the poor baker's daughter studying classical music at Radcliffe, the smart young girl who gives up her plans to study in Europe in order to marry Oliver... She never missed a 'shred of her beauty' in her role...
Ray Milland is the 60-year-old Oliver Barrett III... He is a strong, articulate, civilized millionaire from Boston who refuses to support his son in marrying a girl of such low social stature... He commands him instead to finish law school...
John Harley is Phil, the father of Jenny... For him, "Father's love is something to cherish and respect."
There is three sequences that I liked the most in the film:
- Jenny and Oliver wonderful kissing scene... From this point on, both were entirely engrossed with each other, ready to risk anything for love...
- Oliver's long day search looking for Jenny, until he sees her sitting, outside, on a stair... She forgot her keys... Jenny is comforted by Oliver who tries to apologize for his continual disputes... Jenny, all shaken, and with tears in her eyes and with an emotional voice stops him with words of deep affection: "Love means never having to say you're sorry."
- Oliver, sitting alone and lost to the world, uncertain and perplexed, unable to understand Jenny's tragic fate... If Jenny could spend an hour in his mind, a minute in his heart, a second in his soul to discover what he really feels loving her... Why Jenny has to die so young? Why destiny is against us sometimes, smashing all our hopes and happiness? Why we feel so impotent in front of the will of God? Why can't we understand that we are 'blessed with Life,' and this is our great gift, our true treasure! Barrett's millions could never save Jenny!
The Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran said once: "Love knows not its own depth, until the hour of separation." And let me say that 'nothing is more beautiful than the love that has weathered the storms of Life.' They say: Time mends a broken heart and true love never ends... But if true love never ended then time wouldn't have to mend... So "Love Story" was followed by "Oliver's Story".
Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw are splendid and beautifully matched... Arthur Hill's sincere direction commend the picture to a wide audience eager to a flood of tears...
"Love Story" won 7 Academy Award nominations and Frances Lai - touching music - mixed by Bach, Mozart and Handel, won an Oscar, enriching the beauty of the film...
An intense, tough-looking leading actor is seen: Tommy Lee Jones in his film debut...

Customer Reviews:
"SCIENCE IS DISPASSIONATE".....but not to a WELSHMAN!.......2007-06-06
In 1917 English cartographer Reginald Anson (Hugh Grant) comes to South Wales to measure the famous border mountain Ffynnon Carw for His Majesty's Royal Map. There is one criteria for a mountain to be labeled such: it must exceed a height of 1000 feet; if below that it is considered a hill. The mountain is the pride of all Welshman as it has protected them from all invaders throughout the centuries thereby preserving "ancient Britain." When the measurement comes in at 984 feet the Welshmen become totally unhinged. Their pride has been challenged, their very core has been shaken and they set out on a plan to add twenty additional feet to pass the Royal test!
Ivor Mongor had written a delightful short story by the same laboriously long title. The result has been Christopher Mongor stretching that simple story into a 100 minute screenplay that feels every bit stretched as the hill was in order to meet a criteria to film a movie! Love interests and subplots about the Great War have been added in order to fill out the time, but the result is a movie, that though very charming and clever, should have remained a "hill" instead of making it a "mountain." The conclusion of the story is inevitable, but getting there is as tedious as every bucket of dirt that the townspeople lug up Ffynnon Carw. Even Stephen Endelman's delightful musical themes lose their Celtic charm and effect as they are heard and reheard time and again as if he too was "stretching!"
Visually, the film is quite appealing as we are allowed to focus time and again on the majestic countryside of Wales. The colours and textures used are extremely vivid and pleasing to the senses; but one grows impatient with all of the "filler" material that drags out what was originally a very precise and well crafted little gem of a story.Lop off twenty minutes, get rid of nonessential characters and tell the original story and perhaps this film would ultimately "rise" to the occasion!
The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain.......2007-02-24
This is not Hugh Grant's best, but for anyone who has been to Wales, or know any Welsh personally, it is a great enjoyment. The Welsh are proud of who they are, their heritage, beautiful country and ingenuity. There is not much they would more prefer than autonomy from England, so they love to "get over" on the English. With that in mind ... ENJOY!
Delightful.......2006-12-17
This is a happy, feel-good movie, set in Wales, based on a true story. Quite enjoyable.
Uplifting the Audience Right Along with the Mountain.......2006-10-31
There are several movies that focus on the coming together of a British village to accomplish something that benefits them all. This one has the unique advantage of educating the audience in the nuances of Welsh naming conventions! A fine cast and a well-written story set in the rolling green countryside of Wales round out the overall pleasures of the film. Anyone who confesses to being a smidgen of an Anglophile, and even those who don't, will enjoy this film.
The Englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain.......2006-06-05
The Englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain is a lengthy last name, far more lengthy than many. The story revolves around two gentleman who after serving in Her Magesty's in the first world war are sent to Wales to survey as cartographers.
Well the story takes a twist when they arrive in a small town to take the height of what to the town is a mountain and more than that the town's pride. According to the the first calculations it would seem that the mountain is not actually a mountain at all, but a hill.
No big deal, right? Wrong! The town has always been sure that it has sat in view of a Welsh mountain. I won't ruin the film and give more about the plot than that, but the film is a good one. Hugh Grant gives a nice performance in this lesser known production and the enchanting Tara Fitzgerald supports gracefully.
The film develops the characters in a story that most anyone can relate to. The real twist is that it's a true story explained in the end if you watch throught the credits.

Description
Jay Trotter has waited a lifetime for this day. He's got a hot tip on a horse everyone thinks is ready for the glue factory. But, as track aficionados say, "Even when you know, you never know." One thing you can be certain be sure of is that with Richard Dreyfuss, David Johansen, Teri Garr and more, this is a winning comedy. So put it in your VCR and Let It Ride. Its characters give new meaning to "the odds." And its heart will touch everyone who's wondered: "If every dog has his day, why can't every person have one?"

Still a great ride........2007-06-27
First saw this movie years ago with friends that rented it. Loved it. Couldn't believe we'd never heard of it. Maybe saw it once since then on TV, also awhile ago. It always comes to mind during the Triple Crown so because it's rarely shown on TV we bought it. I am happy to say it's just as good as we remembered it. Great story, great cast, funny, feel good movie. Robbie Coltrane's role is wonderful and Richard Dreyfuss is at his best.
Fun movie! A must see!!.......2007-05-13
Fun movie! A must see!!
A day at the races!! Too bad that name is already used!!
but let it ride works too!!
good movie for those who like to have the underdog to have his day.
who knows!! "You might be walking around lucky and not even know it!"
A TRUE HIDDEN GEM!!!.......2007-02-18
I believe I caught this on cable way back when when i was a teenager and was smitten from the start. Its just such a happy goodhearted movie. I think I may know why it didnt do so well at the box office. The first 10 or 12 minutes drag a bit but after that hold on because your in for a real treat. Richard Dryfuss is at his comedic best and is complimented left and right by absolutely wonderful performances by, Jennifer Tilly, Robbie Coltrane, Buster Poindexter, etc... I would tell you to rent it and you will love it but after you see it you will have to own it. When your down it will put a smile on your face everytime. A similar type movie that I can also suggest is 29th Street. It has the same sort of lull at the very beginning as Let it Ride but it pays off the same.
Let It Ride & What About Bob.......2007-02-05
l bought Let it Ride, What About Bob and did not get Boys Town. When l received the movies l could not play them in my recorder or my DVD player which is supposed to play most movies, very disappointing as my daughter in law buys quite a few from you and has not trouble with hers. Regards Barbara
Overlooked gem with Dreyfuss and Teri Garr.......2007-02-04
Let It Ride was in theaters such a brief time I don't recall ever seeing the movie poster on the marquee. It did play extensively on the pay movie channels several years after release, and I do recall watching certain scenes over and over again. Bottom line, it's a hoot! Let It Ride is a very well crafted comedy. Despite the wardrobe of some characters the movie has aged well. The dialog is instantly quotable. If ever there was a feel good movie this is it. The scenes with Dreyfuss and Robbie Coltrane as the ticket agent at the $50 window are classic. This was the first time I saw Coltrane in anything, and he is simply hysterical. I love the way different classes of horse racing patrons are portrayed. If you've ever been to the track you'll recognize the cast of characters. Teri Garr isn't on screen much except the beginning and the end, but she and Dreyfuss definitely have chemistry. She's one of my favorite comedic actresses.
Watch 'Let It Ride' one lazy afternoon; you'll be surprised how it sticks in your head. Especially that stupid song... "I got the horse right here, his name is Paul Revere".

The Majestic is an old-fashioned throwback replete with a 1950s B-script and halcyon values like patriotism, true love, and clean fun. Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a Hollywood scriptwriter with a sexy gal, a screenplay under his belt, and his big break on the horizon. But when his name is mistakenly given to the House Un-American Activities Committee, Appleton's dreams of success in the biz quickly unravel. An ensuing car accident leaves him without a memory but a great opportunity--as a small town's Luke Trimble, war hero and all-around swell guy, with whom he happens to bear an uncanny physical resemblance. Of course, there's a beautiful woman (Sandra Sinclair) who waited for his return from the war, an endearing old dad (Martin Landau), and the magical Majestic movie house to renovate and reopen. As Appleton's memory eventually catches up to him, however, The Majestic veers off toward Mr. Smith Goes to Washington territory, complete with a monologue on the First Amendment. Unfortunately, despite the film's earnest striving to be Capra-esque and Carrey's undeniable star quality, the charm is more reminiscent of Ronald Reagan than Jimmy Stewart. --Fionn Meade

Great Movie!!!.......2007-03-09
I love this movie! Great watch! Jim Carrey does an amazing job as well as the other actors! This is a classic~!
I like Jim Carrey.......2006-11-10
This is a great movie for people who like Jim Carrey and wish he would receive more serious roles. He is a talented actor and should be recognized for something besides his ability to be crazy. It is somewhat idealistic in the way the story line is presented but what the heck, its a fantasy, wouldn't it be nice if a town could be that supportive.
Luke, I Am Your Father................2006-10-25
I love this film, but I did feel it could have been a whole lot better. In my opinion, this was one of Jim Carrey's finest moments. He is all too well known as a wacky comedian, but it's about time people get the chance to see that he is a good actor and can do more than just stupid comedy. I was very impressed with his dramatic abilities. The visual re-creation used in this film is top quality. A very welcomed site in this era of hustle and bustle we live in. Very good production with a few errors to satisfy those who just live for finding mistakes in movies. Most of us realize that no production is perfect. I loved the plot in this film. Many of Carrey's other films lack this quality in a major way. A very human performance by someone we often see as a classic goof. A nice trip down memory lane. I highly recommend "The Majestic". If you want to see what Jim Carrey's abilities are, this is a good film showcasing his potential. Good casting, acting, directing and photography. In my opinion, it didn't quite live up to it's potential, but that's nothing new for Hollywood...............
I thought this was a democracy........2006-10-19
While most will argue that The Majestic was an opportunity for famed director Frank Darabont to pay homage to the infamous films of Frank Capra, this critic felt it was more an opportunity for Darabont to successfully cliché every recycled element in Hollywood cinema with the sole purpose of making us feel sympathetic to an unimaginative character. The Majestic tried too hard to keep the audience's attention. The Majestic tried to hard to give us a fictional town where realism was taken from the same page as Pleasantville. The Majestic attempted to give Jim Carrey the opportunity to win an Oscar, but as we learn from Jack Nicholson, one sometimes cannot just calm the face to fully embrace a dramatic role. My point is that The Majestic tried too hard, thus forcing the film to transform from a sentimental piece of nostalgia, to just sheer rubbish. While Darabont tried to capture the spirit of 1950s Hollywood in this film, what in fact occurred was simple one dimensional characters that we cared nothing for, events that took place that seemed misplaced from reality, and emotions that escaped honesty forcing us to sit through two plus hours of pure, 100% uncut, Darabont drivel.
Take a brief moment and go through the internet to watch the trailer to this film. Just as I write this review, I find myself looking at what I thought this film was going to center around to suddenly realizing what Darabont actually gave me. To be utterly frank, this is not a film about a theater. Sure, one would assume from both the poster as well as the trailer that it may be about a man suffering from amnesia goes to a small town to rejuvenate an independent theater. As a man who dreams of similar ideas (sans the amnesia), I was ready to enjoy this feature. I was even willing to give Carrey a chance because he had proven to me over time that he could handle a meatier roll. Alas, when the final credits finally did run for this film, I did not see The Majestic as the film that was promised to me. I was expecting an American version of Cinema Paradiso, but instead found myself with more recycled Hollywood mumbo-jumbo that I could wave a stick at. The story was profoundly old, with Carrey doing nothing to re-establish his character. As I look back at his performance, he didn't grab anything by the horns, he didn't push his character to the limit, what he attempted to do was gain audience support by being less comic/zany and more "human", but for me you could see right though his performance. In a year worth of decent performers making their mark in Hollywood, Carrey's performance of Peter Appleton was about as transparent as a ghost and will not remain relevant through the test of time.
As I sit here and nitpick this film, I begin to realize that The Majestic was not the best that Darabont has to offer. I would argue that The Shawshank Redemption was a pure moment of cinematic intelligence, and that perhaps when Darabont joins forces with Stephen King, the work is pure film magic, but when it comes to creating other work, it just seems to fall into the pan of lest resistance. My major issue with this film was the surfacing of smaller issues like Carrey's nonchalant performance, the ridiculous nature of the town of Lawson (and the cliché characters that seemed to inhabit the streets), and the over-played ending speech which seemed like a cut-and-paste of nearly ever other "courtroom" drama ever produced. It just felt uncreative from beginning to end. There were hardly any surprises or moments that had you gripping your seat with anticipation. Darabont played it safe, but the final result ended up being a jumbled mess of already used clichés. I wish I could list them all for you, but as a man who has seen his fair share of movies, I could count the beats with my eyes closed in this film. I knew when he was going to crash, I knew there was going to be a love interest, I knew Carrey would be faced with emotion, and I knew that eventually he would have to defend himself to everyone that we found our eyes surrounding. I knew these events were going to happen, and I am sure that anyone that has seen more than two films in their lifetime would see the same. Creativity, imagination, and energy are three core elements needed to make a film go from average to cult-remembering ... but The Majestic had none of these traits, so it falls into the wayside of being found in a dollar bin within the year.
As I read my lines for this review, a name seems to resonate deeply within these words that utterly describe why this feature failed. I use the word "fail", because it was not a memorable to any extent. The acting was laughable and the story was as generic as Grade-A cheese, and while others may blame Carrey or the writer for such errors, this critic blames Frank Darabont. I see that he was trying to redefine an era of cinema, but why, as a man who loves movies from the 1940s, is this film so terrible to view? I do not believe that Darabont was able to capture the raw nature of the period. I don't believe that Mayberry is on every corner and that every film made in the 50s represented this fake life. He over dramatized the smaller events while completely missing his mark on the bigger moments. This film could have benefited from a small war scene, or possibly from a visitation from Luke himself near the end. I just needed something to spark my interest more than what was presented here. I felt cheated from this film because it gave up midway through and did not push the limits of filmmaking. While I don't expect that with every movie Hollywood releases, there is a level of expectation with a Darabont film which wasn't included here. Mediocrity is what paid the Darabont bill in this feature.
Overall, I wasn't impressed with this film in any way. The cinematography wasn't even worth mentioning because it was so far below the level of mediocrity I found myself deeply sleeping instead of enjoying the cliché moments that Darabont had to offer. Again, I cannot state that if you have seen two films ever in your life, you have already seen at least 8/9ths of this film. That is about the level of creativity and excitement provided. If you are a die-hard Carrey fan, I still don't think that you will find any excitement or enjoyment from this feature. Carrey doesn't go crazy, but maybe he should have for the audience members that were nearly asleep. What a poor, sad excuse for a film!
Grade: ** out of *****
A MOVIE JIM CARREY FANS CAN BE PROUD OF........2006-07-28
All I hear from people is that they didn't like it because he was too serious in this film. You know Jim Carrey is an actor and actors have alot more to offer than just comedy movies. This movie was good altough long it was good either ways. I think this was Jim's second best performance next to Eternal Sunshine. And if you don't like that movie either then maybe you are not the Jim Carrey fan you thought you were. Jim's a good comidian but he is a good actor that should never limit his acting to only comedy.

The offbeat casting of Cary Grant as a submarine captain pays off in this tense WWII underwater picture; he ably trades in his sophistication for the sweaty close quarters of an action movie. The mission? Infiltrate the mined harbor of Tokyo itself, a feat bookended by a brief confrontation in the Aleutians and a depth-charge chase through the open sea. Skipper Grant is supported by the usual stock crew of Navy melting-pot types, with John Garfield drawing duty as the resident dame-crazy fantasist. (Somebody forgot to put the saltpeter in his chow, apparently.) The solid action alternates with dialogue that tends toward the schmaltzy or
