Seven years after he earned his first screen credit as the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, former Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe made his directorial debut with this acclaimed romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Ione Skye as unlikely lovers on the cusp of adulthood. The casting is perfect, and Crowe's rookie direction is appropriately unobtrusive, no doubt influenced by his actor-loving, Oscar®-winning mentor, James L. Brooks. But the real strength of Crowe's work is his exceptional writing, his timely grasp of contemporary rhythms and language (he's frequently called "the voice of a generation"), and the rich humor and depth of his fully developed characters. In Say Anything... Cusack and Skye play recent high school graduates enjoying one final summer before leaping into a lifetime of adult responsibilities. Lloyd (Cusack) is an aspiring kickboxer with no definite plans; Diane (Skye) is a valedictorian with intentions to further her education in Europe. Together they find unlikely bliss, but there's also turbulence when Diane's father (John Mahoney)--who only wants what's best for his daughter--is charged with fraud and tax evasion. Favoring strong performances over obtrusive visual style, Crowe focuses on his unique characters and the ambitions and fears that define them; the movie's a treasure trove of quiet, often humorous revelations of personality. Lili Taylor and Eric Stoltz score high marks for memorable supporting roles, and Cusack's own sister Joan is perfect in scenes with her onscreen and offscreen brother. A rare romantic comedy that's as funny as it is dramatically honest, Say Anything... marked the arrival of a gifted writer-director who followed up with the underrated Singles before scoring his first box-office smash with Jerry Maguire. --Jeff Shannon

John Cusack gives an amazing performance. You can't help but fall in love with Lloyd Dobler. The movie is funny, engaging and completely romantic. The ending is perfect and if you are a hopeless romantic, you MUST see this movie.
"I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen".......2007-05-14
Every time I watch Say Anything I love it a little bit more. I don't know what it is. The loner guy who aims a bit too high in hoping that the class valedictorian will be the one for him. The perfect girl who can only reveal her insecurities around the guy who no one can imagine her with. The daddy's girl who learns her father isn't as perfect as she always believed. All of which are elements of teen film that have been done to death, but there's something about Say Anything, maybe that it came before all those other played-out teen films that tried so hard to be like it. Maybe John Cusack and Ione Skye's innocent portrayals of young love. Whatever it is, this is a movie that only gets better with time. Even if you've already seen this movie, I'd highly suggest watching it again. Like a fine wine, this film only gets better with age.
Absolutely fantastic love story.......2007-02-07
Okay, kids. First, PLEASE stop calling this an '80s movie. It's not - it may have been released in 1989, but it's a prototypical '90s movie. In fact, it may arguably be the first of the pack of young-disenfranchised-Gen X-teens-looking-for-love movies that typified the early '90s (see also: "Singles," "Reality Bites," etc. ).
For those of you who are too young to have seen this movie when it first came out, you can't begin to understand the effect it had on its target audience. It's about as seminal as the John Hughes/Molly Ringwald movies were to the '80s (THOSE are typical '80s movies). It's a brilliant treatise on teen angst in the early '90s, when people spent a lot of time weighing socially-conscious, indie "slackerdom" against more conventional (and lucrative) "sell-out" paths.
This is also the first teen movie I can remember seeing where the leads behaved like actual people - nothing contrived or jokey. The romance seemed normal (or, okay, maybe a little bit better than normal - that scene where Lloyd holds up a boombox outside Diane's window is iconic for a reason) and believable.
I guess some aspects of this movie probably seem a little dated or difficult to understand for people who didn't grow up then. However, for my money, this is one of the most honest, thoughtful, and enjoyable contemplations of love and angst in the Grunge Era.
My favorite teen movie!!.......2006-11-09
I rented Say Anything from the library because I heard what good ratings it was getting from both people and critics. I could see why they thought the way they did about this film, it truly is sweet to watch. John Cusack does well playing the cool Lloyd Dobler as well the beautiful Ione Skye as valedictorian Diane Court. It is a very good movie about true love between two different high school graduates, one who is valedictorian of the class and the other a famous kickboxer. Say Anything is probably Cameron Crowe's best film with Jerry Maguire coming in dead second, thats how good it is. Its a teen comedy film with substance, intelligence and feeling that I just had to go out and buy the DVD. Forget all the brat pack films, Say Anything is the best you'll ever find.

Description
In this charming critically-acclaimed tale of first love, Lloyd (John Cusack), an eternal optimist, seeks to capture the heart of Diane, an unattainable high school beauty and straight-A student (Ione Skye). He surprises just about everyone-including himself-when she returns the sentiment. But Diane's over-possessive, divorced Dad (John Mahoney) doesn't approve and it's going to take more than just the power of love to conquer all.

decent collection.......2003-11-20
I don't actually own the box set, but i know enough about the movies. Combined, they do make a semi good set, but i imagine it would be hard to find someone who doesn't own a single one of these movies already, so i kinda find the box set useless unless theres more to it then they reveal.
'The Banger Sisters' 2 out of 5 stars - I saw it, it was okay, but i don't really want to see it again so i wouldn't buy it. It is one of the 2 movies in this set that i DON'T own, and it would stop me from buying this set. I think A Walk In The Clouds would have been a much better 6th disc.
'Ever After' 5/5 - I love this movie, it's sweet, romantic and takes a good take on a classic. It's great acting, it sticks to Cinderella in many ways, but makes it more interesting then most versions. (including the Disney animated version which i also love)
'Moulin Rouge' 5/5 - My second fav movie of all time. It's great, it's unique in many many ways, and it's just all around brillant. The only problem here is that the box set says it's 6 disc, so i'm asuming that it is not the special edition of Moulin Rouge, which if you are a fan of the movie is worth the extra money.
'Say Anything' 5/5 - Classic love story, possibly one of the best romantic comedy high school flick ever. And the DVD is jammed pack full of enough extras that it almost makes up for the single disk version of Moulin Rouge for most people (not including me)
'Someone Like You' 5/5 - This one is pretty good, it's cute, it's funny, and the way it's told is great. Ashley Judd is brillant in it, and Hugh Jackman is so cute. And the ending is way better then the ending to the book (Animal Husbandry by Laura Zigman) tho the book is really good.
'Where The Heart is' 4/5 - I don't have this one DVD yet, but it is on my list, and i do own the VHS tape. It's cute, a lil slow at parts tho. (Just a update, i do own it on DVD now)
Anyhow, if i didn't own 4 out of the 6 already, with #5 on my list to buy, i still wouldn't buy this based on the above stated about The Banger Sisters and Moulin Rouge. But it is a fairly well put together box set that would be a good present or a gift to ones self.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.......2006-08-04
This is worth about $1. The info on this is completely misleading. There are no worthwhile performances on this disc. The way it works is the band will be performing, but after about 2 minutes, it will cut to the group being interviewed(in the most banal possible fashion - eg "How long have you been into music?", "Do you like being on the road?", etc. arrggg) by some incredibly stupid female host. Then it cuts back to the live performance for anther minute or two, and then back to dumb, boring interview from hell. Then it's on to the next band. There is about 30 minutes of content total on this DVD.
I am an ISIS fan and bought this thinking I was getting a live performance shot in High Definition. What I got was aproximately 4 - 5 minutes of music interspersed with an equal amount of unbelievably bad interview. Let me repeat 4 - 5 MINUTES OF MUSIC PER BAND. A typical ISIS song is 7 - 9 minutes long. And that 4 - 5 minutes is spread across 2 SONGS. Thanks so much for 2 whole minutes of each song.
The video and sound quality is excellent, and comparable to the original HD broadcast. Too bad the content is so unbelievably thin. This disc is just barely worthy of being freely given away with a magazine. Do not buy this under any circumstances.

It's hard to believe there was ever a time when Justine Bateman was a bigger star than Julia Roberts, but Satisfaction is the evidence of that brief moment. It's also a movie unjustly maligned, perhaps because it's a little more frank about the sexuality of young women than older male movie critics find comfortable. Jennie Lee (Bateman, Family Ties) and her band (Roberts, soon to become one of the biggest movies stars in the world; Trini Alvarado, Little Women; Britta Phillips, later to be the bassist for the rock band Luna; and Scott Coffey, the only actor to appear in both Ferris Bueller's Day Off and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive) go to a beach town where they get a gig playing in a club run by a former songwriter (Liam Neeson, Schindler's List). Over the course of a summer, they fall in love, have sex, and play rock and roll--but the tone and texture of the movie is more American Graffiti than Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Perhaps because Satisfaction was directed by a woman, the girls are startlingly well drawn and distinct, despite the movie's episodic nature. Surprisingly, the music has some grit to it, perhaps because it was produced by the legendary Steve Cropper (of Booker T. and the MGs). Even more surprising, Roberts doesn't pop out as a future star; watching Satisfaction, you could imagine that anyone in this strong ensemble--even Justine Bateman--could go on to great things (if anyone stands out, it's Britta Phillips, who then dropped out of movies altogether). Satisfaction is not profound, but it is more honest and nonjudgmental about the messiness of life, youth, and love than the overwhelming majority of teen movies. Debbie Harry has a brief but memorable cameo. --Bret Fetzer

Once in a While a Bit of Nostalgia Suits the Palate.......2006-12-03
SATISFACTION is not a great movie by any shakes, but taken for what it was meant to be - a slightly naive tale of a girls' band that has a summer of adventure, love and opportunity for the big time nut opts instead to become just a group of life-long friends - it is a well done bit of pastiche. Thanks to the simple script by Charles Purpura and to the sensitive direction of Joan Freeman the little story works well.
The interesting aspect of the film is the cast. The band consists of leader Justine Bateman with Trini Alvarado, Britta Phillips, Scott Coffey as the token male, Deborah Harry and yes, the movie debut of Julia Roberts! Liam Neeson serves as the love interest for Justine Bateman's character and Michael DeLorenzo has a small part, too. The music is fun and the cast commits to the idea of the film well. Strange to see a film from 1988 with the established stars disappearing and the 'newcomers' taking flight. Grady Harp, December 06
love 80's movies.......2006-07-31
i am a big fan of the 80's movie even though most are a bit corny. And the same goes for this one at times but i love it. You get to see Julia Roberts and a younger Liam Neeson which is great. Also has a pretty good sound track and Justine Bateman does a good job of lip-syncing. Save when it looks as if she is gonna eat the mic. Over all is a good movie. Hope this review helped. Enjoy the movie.
OK c'mon you know it's a cult favorite ..... .......2006-05-06
Holy smokes Justine Bateman, Julia Roberts and Liam Neeson all in one moview and not a Partridge to be found anywhere ..... I myself have been a fan of Betman for some time and could never really figure out why we havent seen much much more of her over the years ... it's has to be that hot hot 'animal' sexuality that probably turns most women off ... HMMMM
Anyway this is a great light hearted movie .. do not expect any writing above grade 5 level .. Julia Roberts plays an oversexed band member and her best scene was the one she spends 24 hours humping in the bands van ... Liam Neeson was great (what else do you expect) as the 'older' man drinking himself into obscurity ... he's supposed to be somewhat dislikable with redeeming values nut because hes such a damned good actor .... he actually bordered on being a very obnoxious dirtbag with no redeeming values...
As for Bateman well what can i say that I havent said here already .....
Satisfied?.......2006-01-24
I bought this for a friend, as a big surprise for her 26th birthday. This used to be her favourite movie, when she was a young'n.
I'd never seen it before and it's full of unknowns- apart from Julia Roberts in a bit part role and Liam Neason as a moody 'older man' type love interest.
I wasn't particularly looking forward to finding out what all the fun was about- but I gave it a shot.
It's pretty poor. But in a really good way! When you were a youth in the 80s all the chick flick teen drama movies were pretty shabby, but they had such charm... the girls were pretty, the music was catchy and the love stories were completely ridiculous- but that hardly matters when you're 9.
I thoroughly recommend it to anyone that has a vague memory of it- because it'll bring back those 'feelings'! But apart from that.... just watch Dirty Dancing again or something..!?
The rock band dream... 80's girl style.......2006-01-11
Satisfaction... is it goofy? Yes. Dated? Definitely 80's. Light/Fluffy? Yes. Bad acting? I bet Julia Roberts would pay to have her scenes erased forever. All of these questions miss the point however!! The appropriate question about this movie should be, "Is it FUN?", and the answer is "Oh yeah!".
Like day time talk shows, comic books, and that old Poison album hiding in the back of your closet, this movie is a guilty pleasure to be enjoyed, but never admitted to! If you are in, or just really like rock bands, this movie is even better (almost inspirational). It's a fun romp with a young (mosly girl) band who land the ultimate gig at a summer beach resort. Music, mayhem, and rock band movie cliches ensue. The humor is funny.... the "drama" is even funnier (the lead guitarist breaks her drug addiction in one day, because the band tells her to!)! Be sure to look for Debbie Harry (Blondie), who turns in the movie's best acting performance in a five minute cameo. The soundtrack is strangely good (retro 80's), and the "band" in the movie actually performs on it! See the movie, and you will have no doubt that Justine Bateman sang her own vocals... which may or may not be a good thing!
If you've ever strummed an electric guitar, or just dreamed of rocking out and hitting the road with your friends, you must see this movie!!
