A couple of old Dames make the slender story of Ladies in Lavender surprisingly moving. Janet and Ursula (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench), a pair of elderly sisters living on the Cornish coast, discover a young Polish man named Andrea (Daniel Bruhl, Goodbye Lenin!) washed ashore and barely alive. They nurse him back to health and discover that he's a talented violinist--a fact also recognized by a mysterious young woman (Natascha McElhone, The Truman Show), who may woo Andrea away from them. The core of the movie is not its plot but the skillful and delicate play of emotions underlying how the sisters treat Andrea; Ursula, a spinster, finds herself sliding from maternal affection to an embarrassing but irresistible schoolgirl crush. Ladies in Lavender captures something that few contemporary movies bother to consider: Older men and women are as capable of passion and desire as the young, but the young carelessly (and sometimes cruelly) disregard the old. In the hands of Dench (Shakespeare in Love, Iris) and Smith (California Suite, Gosford Park)--as well as David Warner (Time After Time) as a bitter doctor--Ladies in Lavender becomes a bit like a violin concerto itself: Discreet and subtle, but finding in the smallest movements a richness of feeling. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A precious gem.......2007-06-27
Other reviewers have more or less summarized the plot of this film: set in the days before World War II commences, two spinster sisters have their genteel lives disrupted by a near-dead young man washed up on the shore in front of their Cornish home. As they nurse him back to health, the younger sister falls helplessly in love with him.
So many reviewers have chosen to focus on the age of the actresses, yet what is really important here is the sparse script, the light-handed direction, and the consumate skill with which the three leads and the supporting cast play their roles. It is quite heartbreaking to see Ursula going so hopelessly through the pangs of a love she should have felt in her teens or early twenties, when now she is in her sixties. The young men she would have known and loved all died in the trenches of World War One, so her naive heart is helpless in the face of her first love. As she comments towards the end of the movie, "it's not fair."
This is a beautiful miniature of a movie, akin to a Vermeer in the way it captures all the tiny details of someone else's life and touches us with the humanity of what we all share: our vulnerable hearts. We see the various characters trying to pursue as best they can their various agendas; yet in the end it is the one person who does not appear to pursue anything who ends up winning all. The young man Andreas, who months before was washed up on a foreign beach, ends up performing a masterwork in London to the acclaim of all. He is really just the mechanism through means of which the hearts of others are variously exposed.
Maggie Smith and Judi Dench turn in performances that are breathtaking in their craft and apparent simplicity. If Oscars were actually handed out for acting, they each would have scored Best Leading Actress. This movie is a masterwork of understatement, a poignant triumph.
The Ladies are magnificent - but they always are.......2007-06-17
"Ladies in Lavender" (2004) is a film starring two of the best British actresses, Dame Judy Dench and Dame Maggie Smith as two lonely sisters, a widow and an old maid who live quietly and uneventfully in their cottage on the seaside in Cornwall, England. The film takes place in 1936 before the WWII begins. One morning, the sisters discover a young man, almost a boy injured and washed ashore near their home and their lives were changed forever. The sisters take the boy in and care for him. As time passes, they learn that Andrea was on the ship heading to America where he hoped to become a professional musician. Andrea is extremely talented violinist and one day, his playing attracts the attention of a young Russian woman -painter, Olga who lives in the village. Olga's brother is a world renowned violinist and she is ready to offer the boy the chance of his life but the sisters, especially Ursula (Dench) seems very reluctant to let Andrea and Olga communicate. Ursula who never been married feels deep tenderness, warmth, and longing for Andrea that she has difficulty to hide. Her sister who is very close and compassionate to her sees quite well what goes on but she also understands that some dreams would always stay just the beautiful dreams...
The main reason to see the movie is acting and chemistry between two beloved actresses, both in their 70s and both on the top of their profession. As for the story of two lonely elderly sisters in their coastal home, it was told better in Lindsay Anderson's "Whales in August" (1987) that starred Bette Davis and Lillian Gish, and Anderson's film does not have a young foreign boy to make it compelling and moving. The verbal and silent communication between two sisters as played by Gish and Davis makes the earlier movie a quiet and poignant gem. As for the unrequited tender vulnerable love that comes when one least expects it and that makes the life of an older person heaven and hell at the same time, watch "Death in Venice", the tragic masterpiece by Luchino Visconti.
They don't make them like this anymore.......2007-05-29
Here is a wonderful experience for people who still respect old age.
The director (Mr. Dance) has prepared a feast both for the eye and ear.
My wife and I rented the video and just had to have it in our collection
so as to savor the experience again and share it with our friends. Yes,
we are over seventy. Try this film, you will be delighted.
Great actresses=great movie!.......2007-05-07
Ladies in Lavender features 2 great actresses and a delightful story set on the English coast. The photography is wonderful and this adds to the enjoyment of the movie. Ladies in Lavender is a wonderful way to spend an evening. You will not be disappointed!

Pretty funny stuff.......2007-05-25
I was watching this movie on the Amtrak back home. My friend and I thought it was a good movie. Cute. Boys with sex on their minds, typical. I loved the music and Gene was soooo cute. I need a boy next door like that. I'll watch it again. =)
Movie .......2007-05-08
When I received this movie it was in very good condition. The case was not damaged at all and the movie played very well.
Kelly could not save this film!.......2007-04-16
The only memorable part of this film was Kelly Preston doing some bedroom action. The Actors look way too old to be High School Kids.
Save your Money!
A Classic Comedy at an Awkward Time in Life (Puberty).......2007-03-18
I remember the first time watching this movie and thought to myself how corny. It was refreshing to watch it years later. As it did before and still does - make me laugh! Another great aspect of this movie is the music. I would play the movie just to listen to the music!!!
Dating.......2007-02-16
A cute little movie that will make you laugh. It's all about the awkwardness of dating. Seeing Kelly Preston topless did hurt either.

Kay Thompson's literary classic comes to life in this TV movie starring a free-spirited 6-year-old living in New York's Plaza Hotel. Sofia Vassilieva lights up the screen as Eloise, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Hilary Knight's illustrated namesake, from her bright red ribbon to her dainty designer shoes. Equal parts irrepressible imp and cherubic charmer, Eloise has the run of the hotel under the (mostly) attentive eye of beloved Nanny, played "rawther" marvelously by the timeless Julie Andrews. As the Plaza prepares for its debutante ball, a young prince arrives incognito, who Eloise befriends in her usual dervish style. The cast's comic timing transforms otherwise seeming clichés into a masterful romp through several stories-within-a-story, whether it's Eloise matchmaking a romantic liaison for Nanny, or orchestrating reconciliation between the prince and his estranged father. A making-of featurette and art lesson by Hilary Knight round out this heartwarming package, a fitting tribute to Eloise's creator. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Description
Based on the best-selling children's classic, ELOISE AT THE PLAZA brings one of literature's most beloved characters to life in a new heartwarming and hilarious movie that "is reason for celebration" (Orlando Sentinel). Eloise (Sofia Vassilieva) is a fun-loving little girl with a knack for finding adventure every place she looks. While under the care of her "rawther" wonderful nanny (Julie Andrews), Eloise tries to play matchmaker to a lonely prince and wrangle an invitation to the society event of the season. Join New York City's most adventurous six-year-old in this charming new family film. It's "as bright and quick-witted as its high-spirited heroine" (Newsday).
Customer Reviews:
Eloise at the Plaza.......2007-05-09
I'm an 8th grade Social Studies teacher. I use the Eloise book Eloise in Moscow as a symbol for the Cold War era. Since my students had no background in Eloise, they struggled with understanding the book. This video gives the students the needed backdrop into which to fit the required reading. The movie is delightfully funny and gives the students a peek into the culture of the times.
Great story for children that parents won't mind watching a thousand times........2007-02-06
This movie is incredibly well done. Excellent casting and a charming story lead to a very engrossing tale of a mischievous six year old girl with a heart of gold who causes a lot of trouble in a way that real children love to watch, but at bottom, is a sweet kid who is just trying to fill her days living at the Plaza with fun. The movie is styled in a way that is asynchronous. The dresses are very fifties-ish, yet the cars are from the nineties. The music is very American Songbook, yet the props and cultural references are all over the map. The result is a timeless story that is appealing to adults and children alike. Any girl from age three up to 103 will like this story. Boys aged four or five through probably ten or eleven will love Eloise. Parents will love it because if their children get into one of those video ruts in which all they want to watch is Eloise, it is an enjoyable ninety minutes to which to listen. There is no violence, no inappropriate content of any kind, and no "scary bit", yet the movie still has a lot of texture and intrigue. In addition, Eloise, although not well-behaved, is, in certain ways, a decent role model for girls, expressing herself articulately, and solving her own problems (in the context of her own simultaneously privileged yet neglected little microcosm). I've seen this movie probably two dozen times now with my four year old daughter and her friends (which regularly include a six year old girl and a nine year old boy), and I (and they) never tire of it. I recommend it highly.
Why did they bother?.......2006-08-21
The books are witty and charming. This, in stark contrast, is formulaic schlock. Americans -- and much of the world's consumers -- prefer their entertainment predigested so it doesn't require chewing, so they consume the same nutritionless movieland cliches endlessly.
In the land of limitless equality, everything is reduced to equal tastelessness. If you want impart the capacity for discernment to your child, you could start by avoiding this twaddle. The Eloise books are special, while this movie is mere product.
Update: I've since discovered that Anchor Bay has two Eloise animated DVDs, "Me, Eloise," and "Little Miss Christmas," which are far more tolerable than this Disney garbage. They are at least a bit more faithful to the spirit of the books.
We love Eloise!.......2006-02-28
Get all the Eloise you can! The writing is so much fun. Eloise is hysterical! You can't go wrong with this book. Unless you'd rawther take a bawth!
a very fun kid's movie........2005-11-29

The National Lampoon brand has always had very little to do with the movies it has graced. Even the not-so-bad Chevy Chase Vacation entries didn't really need the imprimatur of the famous satire magazine that had its heyday about 30 years ago: They pretty much became a brand in and of themselves. The same goes for the Van Wilder movies, which we probably haven't seen the last of. Even though Ryan Reynolds, who originated the title character in 2002 doesn't appear, his lowbrow, good-natured goofball spirit remains. The star this time is the eminently likeable Kal Penn, who made a big splash in 2004's Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and was Van Wilder's dorky sidekick Taj Mahal Badalandabad in the first movie. Here he displays more of his mentor's glib confidence, maturing into a sex-crazed, fun-loving grad student roaming the hallowed halls of England's (fake) Camford University. The comic situations he encounters there are simply a pretext for the typical sex, flatulence, beer-drinking, and class-division jokes you'd expect. Most of them come off well, thanks to Penn's comic aplomb, rubbery versatility and the rivalry he induces between the geeky misfit gang he ends up leading, and the snooty, upper-class Fox and Hound fraternity that clearly has to be given its lowbrow do. The battle for the pretty girl (Lauren Cohan, in truly good sport mode) who happens to be the property of super-twit Pipp Everett, the Earl of Grey, ends in predictable fashion, as does the rise of Taj's minions as bearers of the torch for the next Van Wilder, whether Van Wilder appears in it or not. --Ted Fry

Ruder, cruder, and even wilder than its predecessor, National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj is a balls-out campus comedy filled with nonstop laughs and sexy student bodies!
Having learned the ways of women from his legendary mentor, Taj Badalandabad (Kal Penn) sets out to study abroad (or two) at England's prestigious Camford University. But he and his bottom-heavy bulldog, Balzac, are quickly rebuffed by the elitist members of Camford's top fraternity. So with the help of a few new friends?and a bold new attitude?Taj plans to teach the school snobs a lesson they'll never forget!
Customer Reviews:
Equal to the first, it is not........2007-05-15
I enjoyed this movie as a comedy, however, it did not measure up to the original Van Wilder. I think they would have had a much better response to this movie if they had not used the name Van Wilder in it. It is worth a little chuckle here and there.
Revenge of the Nerds meets Van Wilder.......2007-05-04
What do you get when you mix Revenge of the Nerds with Van Wilder but remove Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Ryan Reynolds, and Tara Reid? You get this movie, which isn't quite as bad as Nerds in Paradise, but close.
bad.......2007-05-02
One of my co-workers tricked me into watching this film.
I liked the Harold and Kumar film so I had this niave idea that this film could also be good. HAHAHAHA
THis film was obviously written by and for 10-12 year olds. WHoever wrote this film obviously has never attended college. However they have watched revenge of the nerds.
everything about this film is bad.
Please!! Hollywood..... stop!.......2007-04-30
The only thing rising with THE RISE OF TAJ is the number of people who are unwilling to pay money to see movies at the theatre, or buy DVDs.
I wasted $3.75 renting the thing.
VAN WILDER 2: THE RISE OF TAJ is a movie that has every silly cliche that every college movie has ever used. The nerds. The frat. The competition. The frat guys girl. The nerd with the super wanger. I have never in my life rolled my eyes at a film so much. The lines are corny, poorly written, predictable and poorly executed. I didn't laugh once in the whole film.
Kal Penn, who plays Taj Mahal Badalandabad has actually been pretty funny in some other movies, but in this, his comedic execution is destroyed by either a poor director or a poor script. Not to mention, for an indian guy, his indian accent is terrible. It comes and goes and in some scenes it's heavier than others.
The only redeeming quality to the entire movie is a collection of attractive women, including Lauren Cohan, who hopefully can bounce back and have a career.
The real shame is HOW THIS MOVIE EVEN GOT THE GREENLIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE!! I've seen dozens of comedies written by unknown writers who are getting walked over and forgotten because they don't have the connections, and dozens of movies like this get made every year. It's disheartening.
Ultimately, Hollywood is killing themselves by making 50 comedies like this a year, and actually only one or two are any good. Makes you not want to even bother paying to see movies anymore. They just use recycled plots and recycled scenarios and put them to lousy scripts and then stick an UNRATED on the box, hoping all the teeny-boppers will salivate. Don't. This movies junk.
Just Bad.......2007-04-24
I went into this film not expecting a lot other than a dirty gross out comedy. It had plenty of raunch, but no laughs. The jokes just didn't hit the mark at all. The story itself is so recycled as well. I mean the rich evil frat against the outcast frat that just needs someone to pull them together. The first Van Wilder wasn't great, but it at least had some moments and a little heart. I would avoid this one.

Children's book publisher Scholastic has bundled video adaptations of five award-winning picture books on Curious George Rides a Bike... and come up with a treat for youngsters 4 to 9. Kids-lit purists will appreciate the spare animation; the title story and Flossie and the Fox, in fact, are not animated but rather proffer the books' original illustrations accompanied by a narrator's enjoyable readings. Curious George Rides a Bike is a classic episode in H.A. Rey's series in which George rides a bicycle into several misadventures. The Great White Man-Eating Shark, about a boy who uses his resemblance to a shark to scare swimmers, is even more witty with a touch of animation. The aforementioned Flossie is a cute tale about a girl who outwits a vain fox, while the ironic The Cat and the Canary and The Happy Lion, the latter about a Parisian lion who takes a stroll, both look wonderful here. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-06-06
This wasn't at all what I thought this movie was going to be. I don't know if I just didn't read the reviews or what, but it's only one story about George, and not animated. The other 4 stories are award winning books, some partially animated, some not. I bought it because my daughter loves curious George, but not this dvd, because it isn't about that monkey at all.
Not Animated, Not All George, But Not Bad Either.......2007-05-15
Although many reviewers (probably younger folks) give it as a reason to dislike the DVD, for my wife and I, the PRIMARY APPEAL of this early A/V version of Margaret and H.A. Rey's story is its filmstrip-like lack of animation, having both been saturated with filmstrips in parochial school. Our 2.5 year old and 1.5 year old LOVE it, as well as the other stories here. Honestly, I think the biggest reason for the poor ratings is the admittedly misleading front cover. Once past that, the video is just fine. It is in regular rotation in our house full of Curious George fans.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-11
Sorry but not even my kids wanted to finish seeing this video. They never touch it again.
Very Disappointed!!!!!.......2007-03-31
Although the description says "animated", don't believe it!!! The only animation for the George clip is someone moving pictures of the character around!!! My granddaughter (4), kept asking when they were going to do something! The other parts--yes curious george has only one episode even though the title says other wise--were very disturbing to my granddaughter. All in all, money I shouldn't have spent!!! sandy ;^)
Runaway!.......2007-03-10
This video is so not worth the price! It is stills or ONE george book being read by a narrator and some other non Curious george stories as well. Buy you child the Movie they just made and the Zoo DVD which is what runs on PBS. I'm sure there will be more George on DVD in the furture.

Caution! Sensitive Baby Warning!.......2007-03-14
Fond memories of my older children enjoying quirky Pingu shorts lead me to search out some for my toddler who is super communicative.
Little did we imagine the emotional roller-coaster Pingu would be with the sensitive baby set! The very first episode in "Meet Pingu" involves Pingu accidentally hurting his mischievous new friend-to-be in a revengeful confrontation after discovering said seal stealing Pingu's fishing bait. When the injured flipper is displayed, tears flow; the seal has an owie, Pingu is remorseful, and another sound of wailing erupts. It is my 18 month old daughter! Only after they make up and become friendly, and after many soothing words and cuddles on our part, does she calm down.
That is, until Pingu's father delivers a letter to an elderly penguin that has sad news. When Pingu sees the old man crying, he also begins to cry. So begins another deluge from our baby.
And so it goes with the episode of Pinga and her father driving over her doll buggy (!) there was non-stop crying throughout the entire episode.
By the last episode we were drained.
That was it for me, and I decided that it was too much for her. Only annoying Ruby and Max or Classical Baby from now on. But my daughter would not forget Pingu. "Pee-oo?" she would query daily several times. She remembered!! Reluctantly I tried it again with similar results and vowed to keep it under wraps, but she calls for it when Ruby and Max come out. Eventually I caved in again.
After several viewings, our daughter knows what is coming. She is still upset by the same episodes, but is more toned down in her expression of upset. She also talks about the incidents as they occur looking for our reassurance which we continue to give. Babies understand a lot more than we give them credit for and so we encourage her "look! the seal's flipper is better! see! he's happy! they're friends" etc. etc. ad nauseum.
In summary, we love Pingu and if this dvd had only come with an episode selection we could have safely shown the fish tennis match, Pinga at nursery, and...oh! wait! Pingu does cry when the fish gets stuck on his head!...and there is a tense scene when Pinga trips on the way to her desk...
Hilarious little penguin.......2007-02-27
I am a huge fan of all things penguin and ordered this DVD during the 4for3 sale. I'd never heard of it or seen it, but when I watched it for the first time, I cracked up. The claymation's a bit rough, but it's hilarious and I can't wait to share it with my nieces!
Great DVD for toddlers.......2007-01-18
DVD quality: DVD has 6 episodes of Pingu, each of 5 minutes. HIT entertainment could have added a few more episodes or supplementary material to this DVD. DVD has no menu. So, you've got to start at chapter 1 and play through/skip chapters to get a specific episode. However, these minor flaws are compensated by the thoroughly enjoyable storylines.
Content quality: Great for kids, esp. toddlers and pre-schoolers will love it. The penguins speak in their own, non-verbal language called Penguinese. Pingu conveys an array of emotions - he plays with his friends, takes care of his sister, cares for elderly people, helps his parents while having fun and playing harmless pranks. Sometimes he gets bit naughty too but at the end he realizes his mistakes and feels sorry.
Overall, a great treat for all ages.
slapschtick.......2007-01-05
My son and I love this movie, and all the Pingu movies. The claymation is flawless and the comedy is laugh out loud riotous. Much like the three stooges, only it's a penguin. There's once scene where a sel keeps spitting water in his eye. Too funny. It's not violent, just cartoony, so if you don't like Tom and Jerry, you won't like this, but we love both!
Really weird really cool.......2006-11-03
Purchased for two year old son, enjoyed by whole family. Great claymation. Good stories.

Naughty Noo-noo - cute!.......2007-05-01
My little two year old loves Naughty Noo-Noo and this is definately his favorite DVD! He's not much for sitting still but he will for this - thanks!
Loves it.......2006-09-16
My daughter loves the Teletubbies. The video is a little different than the TV program. She seems to enjoy the video better.
The Noo-Noo Tidies Up.......2005-09-18
What is there to say about a vacuum cleaner (aspiradora) that not only tidies up the Teletubbies' house, but also herds, plays with, and chases the Teletubbies with NASCAR sound effects? Preschool kids love this, and although I don't have kids, I bought this for the children of a friend, and watched it to make sure it was appropriate. Adults will find the show extraordinarily boring, of course, but the kids adore it. They seem to particularly enjoy the Noo-Noo sound effects, and imitate him frequently, much to the chagrin of the parents.
The show purports to be educational somehow, which is where the three star rating comes into play. It is very captivating and entertaining for kids, but is not really terribly educational, although a guest spot demonstrates how adding water to dirt makes mud to play in (a lesson I am not sure most parents really need glorified).
The DVD has a couple of extras, including a highly entertaining overview of Noo-Noo operations titled "The Noo-Noo's Silliest Moments." This is easily the most entertaining part of the DVD.
I attempted to watch the DVD in French as well, which is allegedly an option, but although I got the English subtitles to work, I could never get the French option to work.
This DVD will keep your children entertained, but side effects include Noo-Noo imitation at mealtimes, so don't say I didn't warn you.

The tale of a crafty, mischievous little rabbit who outsmarts even the fiercest animals, Brer Rabbit is a computer-animated rendering of Uncle Remus's "The Adventures of Brer Rabbit". Brer Turtle (voiced by Danny Glover) introduces Janey (Rhyon Nicole Brown) to Brer Rabbit (Nick Cannon) by describing how Brer Rabbit's miscommunications with man and the Moon (Wanda Sykes), combined with his insatiable appetite for vegetables, initially caused the descent of animals from space to earth. As Janey and Brer Turtle follow Brer Rabbit through his encounters with Brer Bear (Gary Anthony Williams), Brer Wolf (Wayne Brady), and Brer Fox (D.L. Hughley), his cleverness and cunning are evident as he continually outsmarts the other animals to benefit his own situation. Brer Rabbit's exploits lead to his exclusion from friendship with the other animals and, while he does eventually exhibit some compassion toward Brer Turtle, he remains a trickster to the end who's professed secret is to "give the other animals what they think they want." Several catchy songs add to the appeal of these classic Southern African-American stories. DVD bonus features include "Outfox the Fox for Fish," a very challenging series of math and logic problems and "The Great Brer Chase," a set of trivia questions based on the movie. (Ages 3 to 12) --Tami Horiuchi

With irresistible and toe-tapping new songs and an all-star lineup of voice talent (Wayne Brady, Nick Cannon, Danny Glover, D.L. Hughley and Wanda Sykes), The Adventures of Brer Rabbit is sure to be a family favorite for years to come!
Customer Reviews:
This is a rip off don't buy it!.......2007-04-26
I was introduced to Brer Rabbit via Uncle Remus' stories in Song of the South. This DVD does not remotely come close to the stories told by the lovable Uncle Remus. They are watered down political correct inaccurate bla bla mindless pap. Uncle Remus' original stories had substance and wisdom I didn't find in this DVD.
Delightfully unique!.......2006-09-03
I loved the story of Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch when I was a kid. (I had the...(gulp)...album of the story...boy am I old!!) It's great to be able to share these stories with my kids. It's not perfect, but it is enjoyable. Upon repeated viewing, a few things started irritating me, especially considering that my very young children are watching: the party episode, where the song playing in the background says over and over (and over) "Work that body, work, work that body..." The siblings in the skit at the beginning are also pretty rude to each other. This is a movie that doesn't feature cute and cuddly wilderness critters hopping along in friendship...these guys are constantly trying to eat each other. I'm glad we rented it, and we all definitely enjoyed it, but we won't be buying it.
but not for little ones.......2006-05-05
I haven't seen the whole movie yet because my 3 1/2 year old asked me to stop it. He squirmed through Brer Fox trying to eat Brer Rabbit, and the Buzzard trying to eat him, and the alligator, but when the bear had him, it was too scarey. He has seen Curious George, Toy Story 2, and the Little Bear Movie, and enjoyed them. You can guage from that wheher this is appropriae for your preschooler. I couldn't help but laugh myself.
Great!!!.......2006-04-28
My son loves this movie. He watches it everyday-sometimes twice a day. He is only four years old. Also, I decided to show it to my sixth grade class before first period. We did not finish watching it, but they have been asking for it ever since.
Excellent Family Movie.......2006-03-28
While this movie may not be the same as Disney's classic "Song Of The
South", this direct-to-video film is a beautifully animated, clean,
wholesome, entertaining family film. This movie is filled with very
memorable characters, plenty of adventure, a lot of captivating
stories, great moral lessons, and superb animation. This film also has
a lot of clean humor without any of the sexual innuendo, lame puns, or
gross-out humor that's found in many animated T.V. shows and films
nowadays. Even though this film is aimed at small children, you can
enjoy this movie whether you're 4 or 40, and it's great for the whole
family to watch together (or by yourself). On a scale of 1 to 10, I
give this film a 10 all the way! You will not be disappointed.

Son of the Mask is a frantic sequel tailor-made for short attention spans. For 86 manic minutes, this belated follow-up to 1994's Jim Carrey hit The Mask compensates for Carrey's absence by casting Jamie Kennedy as a cut-rate animator who becomes heavily animated himself (courtesy of non-stop computer-animated effects) when he dons the ancient mask that belongs to Loki (Alan Cumming, nicely cast), the Norse god of mischief. As in the Carrey film, the mask turns its wearers into cartoonish whirlwinds of confident bluster, and that includes a little dog named Otis, and especially Kennedy's mask-induced offspring, a frenetic shape-shifting baby that's more creepy than comedic, like Ally McBeal's dancing infant on steroids and speed. This woebegone sequel quickly vanished from theaters, but it's a harmless babysitter that kids will enjoy, from the director of the similarly effects-driven Cats & Dogs. --Jeff Shannon

solid stuff.......2007-05-29
Alright, let me explain why I love Son of the Mask: if you watch the movie JUST for the special effects, I think you will find yourself really into it, and your opinions will go up.
As for the storyline and character development and all that stuff... well, there's really not a whole lot of it. In fact, hardly none. If there's any development going on, it's just BARELY there. It's the type of comedy that's really far-fetched, but I honestly believe the special effects save the thing. I've never EVER seen so many "totally out there" effects in all my life. As you can imagine, the pacing is pretty fast too.
Most of the focus is on the little baby, who really cracks me up with all the exaggerated special effects they gave him. The same can be said for the family dog. It's just like watching a cartoon, only it's NOT a cartoon!
The effects are EXTRAORDINARY! Not to mention NONSTOP. You're watching one crazy effect right after another- quite fascinating to watch them and it's quite easy to get sucked in to this fantasy land of infinite possibilities.
Don't worry about the characters you see on screen, or anything like that. Just watch the special effects.
Guilty Pleasure and Silly Fun !.......2007-05-09
We tripped over this movie and had never watched it before because of the torrent of bad reviews. We were pleasantly surprised at how good it was!
This will never win an Oscar but it is extremely silly, has non-stop action and a kinda nice sappy theme about family unity and a father's love. Add the recognition that even a DOG can become jealous of a new baby and the extra attention they receive, and there is room here for some family discussion/connecting about these important topics. As a side note, I used this movie with a mask making activity with some very bored high school seniors at the end of the school year and we had a grand time. Little bit of potty humor--but overall a keeper!
Son of Mask.......2007-03-29
I personally thought this movie was far fetched but my seven year old granddaughter thought it to be hilarious. That is the reason I bought it.
Five star.......2007-02-06
not REALLY like the original but I like the story because it goes with the flow of the times. really funny dog and I like Odin's appearance here. Great models of a town can be imitated for your parks and personal playgrounds.
Could be the worst movie ever...........2006-08-14
I don't even know what to say.... Jamie Kennedy is not funny. Alan Cummings is ...weird. The special effects are cheesy. The characters are ANNOYING. The music is like a drill in my ear. On the other hand my 8 year old son thinks it's great.

Not bad, but not the best that Scholastic has to offer . . . .......2007-05-17
My 3.5- and 2-year-old children are entertained by four of the five shows. Noisy Nora is pretty good, except that someone gets referred to as "dumb," so be cautioned in that regard. They like the live action "Cannonball," but it goes on for a good long while. The "Uncle Elephant" show is quite interesting. My children liked the book and enjoyed the adaptation, which is claymation and must have taken about twenty years to make. Not the best of the Scholastic DVDs, not the worst either.
