Andy and Opie live with Andy's Aunt Bee, who serves as a surrogate mother to both father and son. Andy's nervous cousin, Barney Fife, is his deputy sheriff whose utter incompetence is tolerated because Mayberry is virtually crime-free.

The Andy Griffith Show hit its stride during its third season (1962-63), admirably restored in this five-disc, 32-episode boxed set. Andy Griffith perfects his levelheaded Sheriff Andy Taylor; Don Knotts is unsurpassed as the comically neurotic Barney Fife; and Ron Howard continues his legendary run as earnest Opie. The season opens with the endearing episode "Mr. McBeevee," Opie's friend in the trees who Andy believes to be a figment of his son's imagination. From there, every disc contains renowned classics, such as "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver" starring the dashing Howard McNear; "Andy and Opie, Bachelors" offering some of the season's greatest quips; and "The Darlings Are Coming," that crazy clan of mountain musicians including the overtly flirtatious Charlene. The season is acclaimed for introducing several new, recurring characters into the cast including Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors), "Miss Peggy" (Joanna Moore), and Helen Crump (Aneta Corsaut). Except for two episodes missing closing epilogue scenes (which Paramount discloses), the set contains 13 hours of full-length, uncut, black-and-white magic. Also included is the originally aired "Fishin' Hole" theme music throughout the collection, as well as more than two dozen "Sponsor Spots," vintage commercial advertisements featuring the show's cast. What more can be said about this show that hasn't already!? It is just television at it's finest. Season 3 is a really good one with some of my favorite episodes. The DVD transfer is excellent and is a must have for fans of the series.

Original Sponsor Spots?.......2007-05-05

Some of the first complete season sets -- seasons two through four, I believe -- had the original sponsor spots included as bonus features. Will the complete series also have those commercials? That was a HUGE bonus, as far as I was concerned. I don't want to lose them ...

Paramount, Please fix the edited episodes!.......2007-04-23

Although the problem with episodes in Season 4 seem to be fixed, the following episodes are still edited in the Season 3 set.

"The Darlings Are Coming" - Almost 3 minutes have been edited out including the epilogue and the Darling's musical performance of "Salty Dog." This is a CLASSIC Darling family tune! Strange that this episode would be edited on the official Paramount release. It is complete and uncut on many of the non-Paramount public domain Andy Griffith Show DVDs. Check out the release from Brentwood Home Video.

In "Barney Mends A Broken Heart" the epilogue is definitely missing. It's a very short scene AFTER Peggy and Andy hug and make up. Peggy is seen nursing Andy's blackened eye while Barney let's it slip that he and Andy were out with other women. This epilogue appears on an old store bought video I have from UAV Home Video. Curiously on this tape, the episode is edited, but the epilogue is there.

Hopefully these episodes will be corrected on the new, all-season box set slated for release in late May of 2007. Not holding my breath, though.

Still the best!.......2007-04-11

I rate these episodes with 5 stars. I have all the seasons DVD's and will watch them over and over. They are good for families to watch together and for children to watch and they should be watched in schools as a subject, I think. Teaches so much about manners and honest living. I say everyone needs to buy these episodes. Awesome!!

TV at its best.......2007-03-27

The adventure continues. Greatest TV series ever made in my opinion. 3rd series continues the comedy. Viowers should beware however that after the 5th season Don Knots (Barney) left the show and the quality declined.
