America's Sweethearts is just the kind of romantic froth that makes for pleasant viewing on a lazy, rainy day. While Julia Roberts, John Cusack, and Catherine Zeta-Jones offer high-wattage marquee value, costar and cowriter Billy Crystal reworks Singin' in the Rain for latter-day Hollywood, where estranged superstars Gwen (Zeta-Jones) and Eddie (Cusack) reluctantly promote their latest movie by pretending their messily disputed relationship is still going strong. The studio chief (Stanley Tucci) is desperate for a hit, so he hires a seasoned publicist (Crystal) to orchestrate a press junket that will cast everyone in a profitable light. The catch: The director (Christopher Walken) has abducted his own film in an act of artistic extortion, and Gwen's sister and longtime assistant Kiki (Roberts) is the true object of Eddie's desire.
Chaos ensues at the luxury hotel where the junket is scheduled, and America's Sweethearts pokes easy fun at the cynical machinery that keeps Hollywood running. Quotable quips are delivered in abundance, and while Zeta-Jones is readily convincing as a bitchy narcissist, Roberts effortlessly steals the show with her trademark charms. All of which makes America's Sweethearts lightly entertaining, even though it never rises (like Roberts's earlier Notting Hill) to the level of classic romantic comedy, hampered by a script that too often substitutes easy laughs for ripe satirical invention, flashing a phony grin when it should be baring its fangs. --Jeff Shannon

The following review appears in the Internet Movie Database: "I saw this movie for the first time tonight....WOW! I never really liked these two in their other movies but this one is great and the color... superb. My favorite part of the visuals are the on location shots of New York in 1938 IN COLOR! Amazing that the front of NBC still looks the same as it did then. The songs in this picture are much better than most of the "Mountie" movies they did. And Ray Bolger (a year away from "The Wizard of Oz") just steals the opening scene of the movie... too bad they couldn't find another spot for him to dance in this movie. And Frank Morgan (also a year away from "The Wizard of Oz")....how can anybody not like Frank Morgan as the worried producer. He is so much fun in every movie he is in. It is just ashamed that MGM and the other movie studios didn't use color more in these great old movies. What a treasure they would have become. It certainly helps me see the world of my parents and grandparents in real life color, instead of dull black and white. See this movie if you get the chance... just for the fun of it."

The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: "This film has poignant interaction, on screen and off. Jane Powell was at the beginning of her joyful musical career and Jeanette MacDonald, a highly revered musical sweetheart, was at the end of hers. The two play a mother and daughter and a tender highlight of the film was when they sang SPRINGTIDE, blending their beautiful voices together. Jeanette, estranged from her husband for many years, falls for a pianist and orchestra leader, Jose Iturbi. Jane and her two sisters are determind to break up this relationship and bring their father back for a reunion. Jeanette goes on a cruise to clear her head and her daring daughters continue their shenanigans. Weaving in and out of one obstacle after another, all finally ends well. After all, this is a musical. The film overflows with really beautiful music. Jeanette gives us WHERE THERE'S LOVE and SWEETHEARTS. Jose adds RUMANIAN RHAPSODY IN A, with his sister, Impala, followed by LIEBESTRAUM, HUNGARIAN FANTASY and THE RITUAL FIRE DANCE. Jane opens with ALMA MATER and continues with Leo Delibes PASSEPIED, Victor Herbert's FLEURETTE and a vibrant JE VEUX VIVRE from Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet". You'll also hear a honky-tonk ROUTE SIXTY-SIX by Powell and the sparkling DICKEY BIRD SONG sung by all the ladies.A splendid musical venture!"

If you like musicals and are Young at Heart, you will fall in love with the beautiful Eleanor Powell and be mesmerized by her athletic prowess. Throw in Cole Porter's elegant, rhythmic music and you're hooked. Forget a complicated plot; if that's what you seek, find a Russian play. For the gals, there's that handsome baritone, the inimitable Nelson Eddy. You cannot lose. "Rosalie" is among the best, most uplifting of Ms. Powell's movies. She was a lush, radiant 25 when she made this movie and a consummate athlete in peak form and probably the best female tap dancer of all time. After God made her, He threw away the mold. (See her ballet -- of sorts -- in Broadway Melody of 1936; Double WOW.) Normally I oppose cloning humans; for her, I'd make an exception. West Point Footbal Hero Dick Thorpe falls in love with a pretty Vassar girl who is secretly a princess (Eleanor Powell)in the tiny Baltic kingdom of Romanza. Her evil mum wants a forced marriage for her to a semi-royal who is not in love with Rosalie. Thorpe, not knowing this, serenades her, flys to meet her in Romanza only to find she is now betrothed to another. Love wins out, of course and there's GREAT dancing and music, and I DO mean great. Yes, there's corn and her father-king is more than a little batty, but that's a small price to pay for the best dancing legs you'll ever see. Sinatra was right!"

This was the fifth time around for this story. Originally, it was a play by David Belasco in 1905; it was made as three silents as well as an opera. In this version, Eddy and MacDonald were at the height of their popularity: their finest effort - MAYTIME - was filmed the year prior. The screenplay isn't exactly superlative and the direction drags a bit, but fans of the great singing duo should still find themselves semi-enthralled. Jeanette owns a rough gambling saloon and Nelson is a Zorro-like character - but on the wrong side of the law. They fall in love, naturally. The best number in the film is the elaborate MARIACHI number. Buddy Ebsen, who plays Alabama, is in fine form and gives the movie some much-needed comedic moments. Monty Wooley can be seen briefly as the Governor. Melodies include Liszt's beautiful LIEBESTRAUM, THE WIND IN THE TREES, SUN-UP TO SUNDOWN & AVE MARIE....{What a deux mixture!!} Oddly enough, Ray Bolger was originally singing and dancing in this film, but his scenes were deleted. Why is this strange? We all know that Bolger went on into cinema immortality as the Scarecrow the next year in M-G-M's enduring classic WIZARD OF OZ. But many forget that Ebsen was the studio's first choice for the Tinman. Because he was highly allergic - he nearly died - to the aluminum dust mixed into paste for the Tinman's make-up, he was ultimately replaced with Jack Haley."

Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition:"The story of BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938 is not so much zany as just simply bizarre. Raised on a horse farm where she also somehow learned to sing and dance, Eleanor Powell goes to New York in search of fame and fortune on the Great White Way, where she meets (a) George Murphy and Buddy Ebsen, two horse trainers who are also dancers; (b) Robert Taylor, a producer determined to star her in his new show; and (c) one of the horses from her farm. When the horse comes up lame, Eleanor rescues him--and before too long it becomes necessary for the horse to win the big race in order to finance the show! Eleanor Powell was MGM's great dancing star of the era, George Murphy was one of the screen's most reliable hoofers, and Buddy Ebsen was reknowned as a character actor with an eccentric dance style--all three have tremendous star quality and they generate several charming moments. But today the film is chiefly recalled for two supporting players: Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland. Sophie Tucker had been a great stage star for more than 20 years when this film was made, and MELODY offers one of her rare screen appearances: with her no-nonsense, no-holds-barred style, she leaves little doubt about why she was so celebrated--especially when she launches into her signature song "Some of These Days." Garland, on the other hand, was just really beginning her film career, a slightly chunky teenager with a great big voice--and after putting it through the bullseye with a knockout performance of "Everybody Sing" she nailed the audiences of the day with her famous version of "You Made Me Love You," sung to a photograph of Clark Gable."

Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. This DVD includes a BONUS FILM, the 1932 version of SMILIN' THROUGH with Norma Shearer and Frederic March. The 1932 version is in black and white. The following review appears in Amazon for the 1941 version with Jeanette MacDonald: "Miss MacDonald is superb as always, but one cannot help but hear as she sings,a trace of genuine sadness. Her voice has never been equaled,an angel on earth. The setting as well as her costume(s) are absolutly stunning, only adding,if possible to her natural beauty.Talent, grace & charm such as this is never forgotten.A must see classic for anyone who loves beauty, music, human life drama----& Jeanette.Only I feel her leading co-star(Gene Raymond) was not quite equel to her incredible talent.Otherwise--it's defenitly a five star.If you love a true-to-life-warm-your-heart-make-you-cry movie......see this." This review appears in Amazon for the 1932 version with Norma Shearer: "A nominee for the 1932 Best Picture Oscar, Smilin' Through features Leslie Howard in the role of an embittered man whose fiancée was murdered on their wedding day by a jealous lover, and Frederic March as the lovestruck son of the killer--who will pay dearly for his father's misdeed. The film has a terrific cast, including Norma Shearer in a leading role. Quite memorable as one of the best heartbreakers (tearjerkers, if you like) out of 1930s Hollywood, the story finds Howard's character living alone for three decades following the death of his beloved (Shearer). An unhappy man, he becomes guardian to his niece (Shearer again), the spitting image of his almost-wife. When she falls in love with the son of the killer (both men played by March), who naturally looks like Howard's nemesis, sparks fly and tragedy ensues."

The following review appears in the Internet Movie Database: "Author: kinder-1 from northern California Nelson Eddy and Ilona Massey Make a handsome couple in a gorgeous setting. Ilona portrays an anarchist in pre WW1 Russia who falls in love with a Russian prince, played with strength and humor by Nelson Eddy. Their duets are pleasing, and Nelson sings magnificently in Russian, German, French and English. The black and white photography captures the period and costumes well, and the two stars are so strikingly similar in looks, they could easily be siblings. Nelson demonstrates once again, what a loss he was to opera, but how fortunate to have him on film and hear that magnificent baritone."Customer Reviews:
