Amazon.com essential video
Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. --Robert Horton

like a tour guide.......2007-05-30
This is a classic film anD while watching it is like having a tour of Rome, all the sights and famous monuments . If you have ever been to Rome it brings back all the memories of your own Roman Holiday.
Beautiful.......2007-05-25
This film is the sweetest, most lovable romantic film ever. This film encouraged my uncle to become a reporter!
How many people know Dalton Trumbo actually wrote the screenplay? .......2007-04-17
I remember the first time I saw this movie, as a child, with the absolutely radiant Audrey Hepburn in her first major role as the naive, protected Princess determined to have her day of freedom and to escape from her overscheduled, dreary routine.
How lucky Hepburn was to have Gregory Peck as a costar, a man who was gallant (and wise) enough to insist she be listed as a costar, right up there alongside him in the credits. The studio wanted to use the words "and introducing Audrey Hepburn" in the credits but Peck believed -and turned out to be right- that she would win the Academy Award for her excellent portrayal, which may seem a bit over the top to today's audiences but absolutely charmed viewers at the time (I still love the movie).
The story behind this movie is nearly as fascinating as the movie itself and it is worth buying this Collector's Edition to get some of that behind the scenes info in the special sections. Frank Capra was set to direct the movie but when he found out that the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo was the scriptwriter, he bailed. That's when Wyler stepped in, letting Trumbo do the writing but having another writer "front" for him. It took years for Trumbo to be duly recognized.
I do believe this film is best seen in black and white, as it was intentionally filmed this way. Why? Because it was shot on location, in Rome, at a time when movies were often filmed in Hollywood, with backdrops to give the illusion of another country. But not THIS time. However, Wyler feared that if the movie was shot in color, Rome might overshadow the story itself. As it is, some have called Rome the third "character" in this film and it benefits greatly by being shot on location.
The classics keep getting better........2007-04-04
What more can be said about this film? Filmed on location in Rome, Italy in the fifties. Greg Peck and Audrey Hep. Nuff said!
Roman Holiday.......2007-03-19
One of the greatest movies of all time. Audrey Hepburn is breathtakingly flawless.

Product Description
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Winner of two Oscars, the romantic comedy that sparkles like diamonds! From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based of Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry. The sparkling special features on this Anniversary Edition DVD only add to the luster of director Blake Edwards' timeless film classic. Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney co-star; Mancini won an additional Academy Award® for his enthralling musical score.

Wonderful Value for Masterpiece Collection.......2007-01-19
Audrey Hepburn never goes out of style. I got this for my 18 year old for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. There are quite a few teenaged girls who still love Audrey as evidenced on their myspace pages.
AUDREY.......2007-01-05
what can you say about Breakfast at Tiffany's that has not already been said.... From listening to Audrey strum "Moon River" on the balcony to the day she spends with George Peppard in the city getting the ring from the cracker jack box engraved - how could you not fall in love with her....

No one loves the cold months better than acerbic fat cat Garfield, who thrives on a bounty of junk food and traditional meals in the delightful collection of musical-comedy TV specials Garfield Holiday Celebrations. "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" finds the portly hero and airhead-sidekick Odie the dog scrounging through owner Jon's attic to find perfect costumes, then encountering ghosts and ghoulies that seem a tad authentic. "Garfield's Thanksgiving" is a screwball special in which Jon harasses veterinarian Liz into being his Turkey Day guest. Trouble is, Jon is clueless about how to cook a big bird; fortunately, starving Garfield has the good sense to call in Jon's spirited grandmother for a culinary rescue. Grandma shows up, too, in "A Garfield Christmas," about a family get-together that covers all the nice holiday stuff and, of course, lots of bickering, pouting, and jealousy. As long as Garfield gets his Yuletide lasagna, however, all is right with the world. --Tom Keogh

Breakfast at Tiffany's
No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Taking liberties with Capote's bittersweet story, director Blake Edwards and screenwriter George Axelrod turn New York into a city of lovers and create a poignant portrait of Holly, a frustrated romantic with a secret past and a hidden vulnerability. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. The only sour note in the whole film is Mickey Rooney's demeaning performance as the apartment's Japanese manager, an offensively overdone stereotype even in 1961. The rest of the film has weathered the decades well. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic. --Sean Axmaker
Roman Holiday
Sabrina
Audrey Hepburn is the delightful young Sabrina, the daughter of a chauffeur who is hopelessly in love with David Larrabee (William Holden), the playboy younger son in the rich Long Island household her father works for. In order to help her forget her woes, Sabrina is shipped off to cooking school in Paris. While there, she befriends a baron who provides a bit of culture--and the encouragement to snip off her childlike ponytail. Upon her return to New York, Sabrina is transformed into a sophisticated woman, and David is entranced by her. However, his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged David's marriage to Elizabeth Tyson in order to seal a business merger and thus must steer David away from Sabrina. To do this, Linus takes on the task of wooing her for himself. Full of great dialogue ("A woman happy in love, she burns the soufflé; a woman unhappy in love, she forgets to turn on the oven") and wonderful performances, this film is a romantic masterpiece. Also enjoyable is the 1995 remake, starring Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford. --Jenny Brown

All time collections.......2007-05-15
I have watched the movie over several years..from my childhood days. Every time I enjoy it albeit different reasons at different age!
Special features make this a special collection.......2007-04-30
I bought this 3 discs in one case collection over her other collections because each movie had special features. This is a great price for these 3 movies.
Breakfast A Tiffany's - Color, Romantic comedy. Probably her most famous and best role, Holly Golightly, is based on Truman Capote's novella. She is a carefree New York playgirl with an unstructured lifestyle. Holly befriends a nameless cat and a struggling writer(George Peppard)who is "sponsored". Widescreen Version, Enhanced for 16.9 TVs, SPECIAL FEATURES: "Making of a Classic", Commentary by Prouducer, "It's So Audrey: A Style Icon", "Audrey's Letter to Tiffany", more.
Roman Holiday- Black and White, This is Audrey's American debut in film. A great picture, it was nominated for ten Academy Awards. Audrey received an Oscar for her portrayal of a modern day princess overwelmed by her duties decides to escape for a holiday in Rome. She meets Gregory Peck a newsman, who pretends he doesn't know who she really is so he can get an exclusive story. Eddie Albert is Peck's fun loving cameraman pal. The screenplay was written by a famous writer blackballed during the McCarthy era. Directed by William Wyler. Features: "Remembering Roman Holiday,", Restoring Roman Holiday", "Edith Head- The Paramont Years", more.
Sabrina- Black and White, Romantic Comedy, Hollywood's great stars Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, and William Holden team up for this Cinderella story. Bogart and Holden are mega rich brothers and Audrey is the chauffeur's daughter, who is in love with the youngest brother. Special features include "Sabrina" Documentary.
Elegance and style.......2007-02-16
Audrey Hepburn was -- and remains -- the perfect illustration of elegance and sophistication in Hollywood. A lot of actresses have tried to imitate her look, but they couldn't manage the same onscreen grace and skill.
And the "Audrey Hepburn Collection" brings together three of the films that helped shape that image. Okay, they're not her most impressive. But all three are all funny, charming, romantic movies, and they are also the ones that Hepburn is still best known for doing.
Bored young Princess Ann (Hepburn) goes on a "Roman Holiday," when she gets upset, is sedated by a doctor, and has an odd reaction to it. Soon she has wandered out of the palace and into the streets of Rome, where she is found by struggling American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). Since she appears to be drunk, he takes her home.
When Joe realizes that he has the missing princess in his apartment, he takes her on a whirlwind tour of Rome, with his pal taking photographs for a full article. But he doesn't count on falling in love with Ann. And Ann has a tough choice to make -- should she give up her royal life and stay with Joe, or fulfil her responsibilities as a princess?
"Sabrina" (Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffeur at the palatial Larabee estate. She's also in love with the ne'er-do-well second son, David (William Holden), but is sent away to Paris to attend a cooking school. And with the help of a fairy godcount, she gains sophistication, ambition, and confidence... as well as the ability to make a souffle properly ("A woman unhappily in love, she forgets to turn on the oven!").
When she returns to the Larabees' estate, David is instantly smitten. But even if marrying a chauffeur's daughter were okay with his family, his brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged a business marriage for David. And to make sure David doesn't run off with Sabrina, Linus begins wooing her too... and falling in love for real.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a daily ritual for Holly Golightly, a social butterfly who hosts parties, entertains drunken men, and dreams of owning a horse farm in Mexico. When Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves into a neighboring apartment -- courtesy of his rich patroness -- he is instantly enchanted by the ditzy, sweet-natured Holly.
But for all Holly's fun, Paul starts to realize that all is not well with her. She's desperate to marry rich, visits a notorious gangster, and hides that she was an illiterate teen bride. As Holly's life starts to deteriorate, Paul sets out to show her what her life will be like without real love.
Yes, they are all romantic comedies, completely unrelated except that all three have Audrey Hepburn. But all three are fun, well-written ("You can't live here! I live here!" "Hi, neighbor!"), and charming. They're good for daydreaming as well, since they take place in chic apartments, palatial mansions and the streets of Rome.
The movies are definitely romantic -- one theme they share is love that doesn't come easily, whether the problem is one of the people involved, parents or overprotective staff. There's also slapstick comedy (like David sitting down on champagne flutes and injuring his butt), and more sophisticated comedy (like when Anna and Joe pretend that they were speeding on their way to get married).
Unlike many actresses, Hepburn's best-known roles were NOT all alike, nor were they all carbon copies of her. Even when we shouldn't really like the characters, she gave them warmth, sensitivity and likability that can't be faked. And she could be very funny too -- it's hard not to laugh when Holly yells "Timber!", as a drunken guest keels over.
The Audrey Hepburn Collection is the ideal trio of movies for people who are just falling in love, or who appreciate a good romantic comedy. Charming, cute and sweet.

This animated version of the Christmas classic is more about combat than dancing, which will make it appealing to boys leery of a female protagonist. When Clara (voiced by Megan Follows) is delighted with his gift of a nutcracker on Christmas Eve, toy maker Drosselmeier is inspired. He tells the tale of how his nephew rescued a princess and was promised her hand when the evil Mouse King turned him into the nutcracker, making him a prince only among dolls. That night, Clara has fitful dreams about the battles between the Nutcracker Prince (Kiefer Sutherland), backed by his legion of toy soldiers (including a commander voiced by Peter O'Toole), and the enormous mouse and his minions. When the prince is finally victorious, he invites her to come to his doll kingdom. A dream-conjured Drosselmeier obligingly shrinks her and she climbs through her dollhouse castle door into a world of flying swans, sugarplums, and ballerinas. This 68-minute movie based on E.T.A. Hoffman's book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King will interest ages 2 through about 10. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Not at all what I was expecting!!.......2006-12-22
I purchased this DVD based on all the positive reviews, however after viewing it, I was extremely disappointed.
I watched this movie with my two-year old son and my four-year old daughter. The movie starts out simple enough w/Clara and Fritz heading home to the party. However, the storyline vears off from the original ballet version when Drosselmyer begins to explain to Clara how his nephew became the Nutcracker. It takes the viewer into a mini-subplot about a king (who is rather rude) and his Queen (whom I assume is supposed to resemble Mother Ginger?). I found this part of the storyline to be annoying and unnecessary. My daughter (who has seen the ballet version of the Nutcracker) kept looking at me confused wondering who these characters were (since they are not part of the ballet version).
Then my two-year old basically jumped into my lap when the Queen Rat's son (very ugly and mean looking) came back to life after it appeared to be dead. I am fully aware of the battle between the mice and the soldiers and expected a certain amount of violence. However, when the camera zooms in closely on what appears to be a dead rat and then the rat jumps up and roars w/it's ugly face, I don't find that appropriate for small children. Talk about causing nightmares!
My daughter was also very disappointed that there was no Land of Sweets (this movie has Land of Dolls) and that the "best part" was missing (performances by foreign countries -- China, Arabia, Russia, etc.).
This movie was a huge disappointment!!!! Not recommended if you're looking for the ballet storyline.
My favorite Christmas movie.......2006-12-07
I had been looking for this movie for years. I used to watch this every year on HBO and couldn't remember the name of it. When I searched for the nutcracker I thought I would never find it but here it is. This is a great version of the nutcracker. I would recommend it as a family holiday tradition movie.
Pure Magic!.......2006-11-28
A film which has surpassed the test of time is the only way I can describe 'The Nutcracker Prince.' A true Christmas classic with stunning animation, a wonderful story and beautiful music and songs. It's also appealing to both genders and people of many ages. It features action for the boys and romance for the girls with everything else in between. The tale of how the Nutcracker 'came to look the way he does' is filled with humour but like the whole film leaves you with a feeling of compassion for the poor nutcracker and as it turns out poor Clara. The film has a perfect balance of both sentimental moments of sadness matched with moments of absolute joy and an ending that will please all.
Moments to watch out for include:
Clara's dance and song with the Nutcracker (my favourite scene in the film), the scene where Marie (the typical teen doll) struts her stuff and sends a mouse catapulting through the air, Marie's entrance into The Land Of The Dolls, Clara and the Nutcracker's ballet dance in The Land Of The Dolls and Clara's final emotional battle against the Mouse King (that's right the girl even gets to fight on her own behalf for once).
Overall the film has many wonderful morals for children of all ages. From lessons of courage and self-sacrifice to accepting ones self and accepting the changes that come with growing up, 'The Nutcracker Prince' is a masterpiece that deserves to be nurtured and appreciated; watched time and time again.
A Wonderful Christmas Tradition.......2006-10-21
I found this movie, the VHS version, when I was in high school...and I still love to watch it every Christmas! It is such a sweet movie, and I love the music. I never knew the words to "The Nutcracker Suite", until this movie.
This movie is entertaining for ALL ages, and it will fast become a wonderful Christmas tradition once you see it. I'm SO glad that they finally have it out on DVD!! Can't wait to get mine!
love the theme!.......2005-12-13
My kids enjoyed this movie - a cartoon.
I enjoyed the music - especially the Theme from the Nutcracker Prince, "Always Come Back To You."
Does ANYONE know where I can find the soundrack, or just that song?
Thanks

Anyone piqued, appalled, or otherwise puzzled by the offbeat Christmas tune that elbows its way onto the airwaves each year will be pleased to know there's now a movie-length explanation for the tale of gratuitous granny-bashing. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, an animated feature produced for video, puts everything straight: Grandma Spankenheimer, a universally adored shopkeeper in the bustling town of Cityville, is the victim of a Christmastime conspiracy masterminded by Cousin Mel, her money-grubbing granddaughter. When Grandma refuses to sell her store to Austin Bucks, the local fat cat, Mel, determined to make a fortune, poisons a batch of the silver-haired do-gooder's famous fruitcakes with reindeer nip, thus causing Rudolph and company to crash into her while making their Christmas Eve rounds. Soon there's an APB out on Santa, named the culprit of a hit-and-run and possible kidnapping (Grandma, nowhere to be found, is sidelined with a nasty case of amnesia in the North Pole). For kids 6 and older, this video's smirkiness isn't likely to overshadow its somewhat convoluted message about the holiday spirit, but in grownups what resounds is not the anti-greed and goodwill sentiments but the degree to which society has slunk into cynicism since the Grinch's heyday. Gary Chase serves up a spirited rendition of the title tune plus a handful of other nifty, off-the-wall Yuletide nuggets. --Tammy La Gorce

My 5 year old loves it.......2006-03-17
The only way for most adults to rate a movie like this is by how much their kids like it. My 5 year old daughter just loves it and it seems cute and harmless to me, so I gave it 5 stars. She watches it all the time, not just at Christmas. Of course, she also forces me to keep a CD of Christmas carols in my truck so that we can be driving around in June singing Jingle Bells, but that's another story.
I love this movie........2005-12-12
This movie to me is funny and very good for kids, to me I watch it every chrismas making it traditonal to ma and hopefully to you too.
A fun movie for kids.......2005-01-09
I'm reading some of the reviews and I think some people are over analyzing it. It's a fun movie that was based off a song that kids love. It's not exactly like the song. Some things were added in for the story line but I think that if you have kids, they will love this movie. At least ours does.
Kids love it..............2004-11-11
This is our two youngest sons, ages 6 & 2, favorite movie. It doesn't have to be Christmas, they want to watch it all the time year round. They have alot of videos but this is the one that they are constantly wanting to watch. My husband, myself and our 9 year old really like this movie too. We have all watched it many times and we all think it is a really cute movie but out two smallest absolutely love it.
Good song, stupid movie.......2004-04-08
When I was 15, I had seen this movie during Sunday School around Xmas time. Midway during the movie, everyone was falling asleep. I never want to see this movie again as long as I live. The song itself was good, but the movie was stupid

What a trio of movies in this boxed set: three of Audrey Hepburn's best performances in three of her best films. In Breakfast at Tiffany's, she is perfectly cast as Holly Golightly, Truman Capote's prevaricating heroine who has forgotten her past to create a more interesting present--and Blake Edwards's film version is both beguiling and sad. In Sabrina she is ideal as the chauffeur's daughter who comes back from Paris looking a lot better than when she left--and attracting the attention of a pair of wealthy brothers: playboy William Holden and stuffy Humphrey Bogart. And in Roman Holiday, her debut and for which she received an Oscar, she is delightful as the escaped princess who slips away from her handlers and spends a day with a reporter (Gregory Peck), falling in love and seeing how the normal folks live. --Marshall Fine

I watch it all the time........2007-02-07
I bought this collection after seeing Sabrina one night on tv. The three films included are really just beautiful stories, but each one is drastically different than the last. They've made me fall in love with Audrey Hepburn. I watch them over and over again, each movie is good for different moods.
The best part of any Audrey Hepburn film, imho is her personal style. I find myself trying out scarves, pearls, and other feminine items I never would have thought - all because she wore them so well.
Anyways, I just love this set. It's one of the few DVD sets I would not want to get rid of.
I LOVE AUDREY HEPBURN!.......2006-07-02
In this astounding collection featuring some of Audrey Hepburn's best movies, (Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's) she is just as charming and beautiful as ever. Hepburn is an incredible actress who is one of the greatest fashion icons ever, and shows it in these three wonderful movies.
Hepburn at her best.......2006-05-29
I was thrilled when I saw that you could buy 3 of the best Audrey Hepburn movies all in one. Each one of these movies is fantastic, and I would encourage everyone to see them. Audrey Hepburn gives a flawless performance in each one. Sabrina is constantly overlooked and yet one of my favorites. Audrey stars opposite Humphrey Bogart in Sabrina, and the two shine. This is a movie set that every DVD collection needs!
Sabrina Fair.......2006-03-10
Love Audrey, especially Sabrina Fair. Full of glamour and fun, especially good for watching while on a treadmill.

Also, follow up on the Microwave rice cooker that I ordered , until now I haven't received it. Please advice if you sent it too..

Your sunny, funny face.......2007-06-20
Audrey Hepburn was -- and remains -- the perfect illustration of elegance and sophistication in Hollywood. A lot of actresses have tried to imitate her look, but they couldn't manage the same grace and skill, both onscreen and off.
And the "Audrey Hepburn Five Pac" brings together five of the films that helped shape that image, including her three top starmaking roles. Okay, they're not her most impressive. But even when they're uneven ("Paris When It Sizzles"), her movies are charming, sweet and just a little bit quirky.
Bored young Princess Ann (Hepburn) goes on a "Roman Holiday," when she has a bad reaction to a sedative. She wanders straight into struggling American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). When he realizes she's the missing princess, he takes her on a fun vacation in Rome, with his pal taking photos for a hit article. Yet he's also falling in love with Ann... and she's torn between love and duty.
"Sabrina" (Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffeur at the palatial Larabee estate, and is in love with the ne'er-do-well second son, David (William Holden). After a stint at a cooking school, where she gains sophistication and confidence, she returns to enthrall David. But since his brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged a business marriage for David, Linus starts to woo Sabrina instead... and falls for her as well.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a daily ritual for Holly Golightly, a social butterfly. When kept man Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves into a nearby apartment, he is instantly enchanted by the ditzy, sweet-natured Holly. But for all Holly's fun, Paul starts to realize that all is not well with her. As Holly's life starts to deteriorate, Paul sets out to show her what her life will be like without real love.
"Funny Face" becomes a concern for a fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) who is assisting a fashion queen with the new "pink" look and the intellectual model look. After a disastrous shoot at a boho bookstore, Avery is struck by the owner Jo's (Hepburn) look, and convinces her to become their newest model -- and she only agrees to get to Paris so she can meet her favorite philosopher. But she's also falling in love with Dick and her modelling career.
"Paris When It Sizzles" features Richard Benson (William Holden), a laconic playboy screenwriter, who procrastinated on his forthcoming script until just a few days before the deadline. So he hurriedly hires a secretary, Gabrielle (Hepburn) to help him come up with an idea and write it -- except that all they can come up with, as they fall in love, are all sorts of completely bizarre scenarios.
Yes, they are all romantic comedies, completely unrelated except that all of them have Audrey Hepburn. But all three are fun, well-written ("You can't live here! I live here!" "Hi, neighbor!"), and taking place in chic apartments, palatial mansions, Parisian runways, and the streets of Rome. And each has a theme: love that doesn't come easy, whether the problem is one of the people involved, parents or just different personalities.
There's also slapstick comedy (David injuring his butt on champagne glasses), and more sophisticated comedy (like when Anna and Joe pretend that they were speeding on their way to get married). And Hepburn provides plenty of it, such as her crazy club dance or her encounter with a vampire.
Unlike many actresses, Hepburn's best-known roles were NOT all alike, nor were they all carbon copies of her -- we have wistful bohemians, party girls, timid teens, and chained-back princesses. Even when we shouldn't really like the characters, she gave them warmth, sensitivity and likability that can't be faked. And she could be very funny too -- it's hard not to laugh when Holly yells "Timber!", as a drunken guest keels over.
The Audrey Hepburn Five Pack clusters five of Hepburn's most chic, charming movies, for those are just falling in love, or who appreciate a good romantic comedy. Charming, cute and sweet.

'Evil Dead' Meets 'The Funhouse' Meets 'The Twilight Zone'.......2007-02-28
Based on the review title, you can imagine that this film has many facets that congeal to make a crazy, tasty oatmeal of a movie. Every contrivance of horror film history is used in this film, from ghosts to zombies and then some. The production crew must have decided to pull out all the stops and try every effect done before and put their own spin on them. This is what makes "Bloody New Year" endearing. It is not an excellent film by any stretch of the word. The acting is mostly weak, but the viewer hangs on to each scene waiting for the next scare or effect. Some scenes are executed well, while others are simply amateurish. This is a guilty pleasure that any horror fan should add to their collection to review every turn of the new year.
Somewhat stylish, but off-putting by weak budget, plot, and script........2005-11-12
It's definitely not your run of the mill slasher fest, as it's got a weird horror and sci-fi mix, with an interesting premise, but it falls short all across the board as far as the meat and potatoes of a film are concerned.
There apparently did not seem to be a running script, as for much of the film, especially the beginning, it sounded like every line was ad-libbed and improvised, with people barely getting there short and awkward lines out. There is little dialogue, and what there is, sounds like the actors are either unfamiliar with it, or are completely improvising as they go. The plot is basically these kids are at a carnival and get into a beef with some local hoods, then escape on a tiny boat, which sinks and they end up on a strange island, with a deserted hotel that is completely decorated for Xmas and a New Year's Eve party.
The premise is interesting, but the plot isn't taken anywhere, and the movie completely stalls when the scenes shift to a sci-fi cause of all the casualties on the island. The special effects are very low budget, and not helping are the DVD transfer's colors looking rather washed out.
There are a few stylish scenes which save this from being the worst horror film out there. The best is when one of the girls attempts to ride the elevator, and upon pushing one of the floor buttons, it turns to soft mush, and then these arms protrude out of the back of the elevator wall to grab her and suck her in. This scene was ultra cool and it looked like the low budget actually made it look realistic, with the arms bulging through what appears to be painted latex. The cracking paint as the arms swooped in actually made it look very real. Definitely the high point in the film, and one of the better scenes in any horror movie of this time frame.
There's very little interest here, apart from a few scenes, and while it's not the worst of the genre, it's held down from rising above other horror flicks due to it's wooden acting and low budget. You might be interested in seeing it once, but nothing more. There are much better examples of stylish 70's and 80's horror out there.
Low budget, but strangely compelling.......2004-09-06
Norman J Warren's last film to date is a guilty pleasure. A group of kids have a fight in a fairground and find themselves on a boat heading out to an island. However, the island is deserted apart from strange, invisible ghosts and haunted cinema screens...
It's a low budget affair, with unknown actors & some special effects that are clearly done on a budget - but's its also a bit offbeat & rattles along at a nice pace. Despite the obvious constraints on the budget, the film's atmosphere is quite strange. I lost my old VHS copy years ago, and can't wait for the DVD!
Music was by Nick Magnus, who has worked with Steve Hackett and various other well known artists, and the songs are by the group "Cry No More." This group consisted of two ex-members of the Stawbs (One who was a strawb for a brief period only!) and Magnus himself.
Bloody New Years.......2004-05-24
When it comes to horror Bloody New Years is one of the best B-movies you can watch. I deals with a group of kids being chased from an amusement park to an island when a top secret goverment weapon hit in the 1950s and trapped the inhabitants of the island in a time loop neither dead or alive. One by one the new people join them in the neitherworld. Another classic horror film I'd like to see put out on dvd.
