In between the disaster movie satire Airplane! in 1980 and the hardboiled cop show parody The Naked Gun in 1988, the comedy crew of Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker put together a picture that's almost as funny as their better-known hits. Top Secret! sends up spy movies and cheesy teen rock & roll musicals. Val Kilmer stars as swivel-hipped American rocker Nick Rivers, a sort of blonde Elvis whose secret weapon is Little Richard's tune "Tutti Fruitti." On tour behind the Iron Curtain, Nick strikes blows for democracy overtly and covertly, with his music as well as his espionage skills. In short, this is a very, very silly motion picture. Some great gags, including a subtitled scene in a Swedish book shop, and an inspired bit with a Ford Pinto that not everybody may get anymore. (The Pinto, you may or may not recall, was notoriously prone to gas tank explosions when rear-ended.) --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Jim Abrams strikes again!.......2007-06-11

If you love spoofs of classics, this is another to add to your collection! A young Val Kilmer as an Elvis type spy!! Not quite as funny as Airplane! or Naked Gun, but well worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars A very nice classic comedy.......2007-03-13

The movie is very nice. I have actually watch this movie more than 10 over years ago. But recently after I bought this DVD, it amuse me again. I like Val Kilmer in this show, he's damn cool.

5 out of 5 stars First saw this while living in Germany.......2007-02-19

Many of the Germans in the audience loved it too! One of my favorite films. I even like the music style and, yes, I take guilty pleasure in the awful jokes incorporated in the film: "I know a little German... and there he is!"

The visual jokes are great too. Overall, just a lot of fun!

3 out of 5 stars Val!.......2007-01-12

This is a fun movie...early Val Kilmer. I find it good because you get to see "How Silly Can He Get, Oooh Yeah".

3 out of 5 stars I wonder if Val Kilmer happily publicizes the fact that this is his film debut?.......2006-12-14

"Top Secret!" is a classic example of that wildly popular film genre, the "combination World War II spy movie and Elvis movie romance/ comedy/parody". I'm being silly, but my dumb joke essentially sums up what's good and bad about this goofy romp: if you're familiar with the genres being raked over the coals in the movie, you'll have a good time. If you're not so familiar with those types of films (in other words, if you're under 30 and only watch new stuff on TV), this movie will mostly leave you at sea.

Myself, I'm not so old but DO like to watch a lot of old stuff on TV and DVD, so I had fun with the jokes and the sensibilities being mocked. Having said that, though, I still would rank "Top Secret!" only somewhere in the middle of the Abrahams/Zucker film canon. There just weren't enough laugh-out-loud moments, and a couple of the gross jokes were a little too, well... gross (not that I was offended, just kinda nauseated). On that last point, let me share a bit of advice: you might want to scoot the kids and pre-teens out of the room before you watch this movie, unless you feel like answering questions about the outrageously-in-bad-taste "marital aid" featured in the prison cell scene with Val Kilmer. Or the "violation" scene when the two guys are wearing the cow suit. I admit I'm chuckling a bit now as I think of those scenes (see, I'm not a prude), but I'm certainly glad it was just me and my wife in the room when we recently watched the film on DVD.

Oh, and if you think MY comments about the movie are only lukewarm positive, wait'll you hear the commentary track. The Abrahams/Zucker folks, though dropping a few affectionate comments here and there and admiring a sight gag or two, essentially hate the movie and wonder what they were thinking when they made it. Myself, I think they were being a little harsh. If you don't expect the world, "Top Secret!" is a tolerable and moderately entertaining bit of silliness.

Derivative fluff from 1987, made tolerable by its bawdy exuberance and an appealing performance by Michael J. Fox, who was still enjoying TV stardom and the career momentum he earned by traveling Back to the Future. Here he plays a Kansas farm boy who dreams of scoring big in New York City, but reality turns out to be brutal to his ambition. When his uncle (Richard Jordan) gives him a mail-room job in the high-rise headquarters of a major corporation, Fox occupies an empty office and poses as a young executive, winning the attention of a lovely young colleague (Helen Slater) and having an affair with his boss's wife (Margaret Whitton). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the movie's still recommendable for its lively cast and a breezy style that almost succeeds in updating the conventions of vintage screwball comedy. Whitton is a standout performer here, so you may wonder why her comedic talent has been underrated, apart from a good role in the first two Major League movies. This may be little more than a big-screen sitcom, but it's not without its charms. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars The secret of my success.......2007-05-12

This is a very funny movie. It is a classic 80's movie. You have everything from the love stroy to the for the family story. Micheal J. Fox did a very well job in this movie and so did the other actors. This is a good movie to watch on a friday night.

no, not an academy award winner, but it was fun to watch, and it was light but fun entertainment. If you want serious, just wake up in the morning and live life. Othewise take a break with this movie, and just don't take it seriously.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorities Old Movies.......2006-09-26

A story to learn that All can prevail and jump our obstacles if we like it!

4 out of 5 stars Cliche but enjoyable.......2006-08-07

Very enjoyable movie. One of Michael J. Fox's better movies. Yes, the storyline is rather cliche but the characters and appropriate music at the right moments as well as Fox's talents help to make this a very enjoyable movie.

Anyone with a fondness for the conventions of the submarine picture will be content with the modest pleasures of Up Periscope, a World War II melodrama starring James Garner in one of his early Maverick-era roles. Pulled away from a week-long romance, Garner tags along with the sub to a Japanese-held island, where he will SCUBA ashore and copy a secret radio code. On top of the reliable suspense of a man alone behind enemy lines, the film also offers captain Edmond O'Brien, whose previous mission has his crew suspecting him of cowardice. Will he cut and run before Garner returns to the submarine? Director Gordon Douglas made a batch of entertaining pictures over the years (a bunch of Sinatra titles, the giant-bug classic Them!, In Like Flint) and he coolly finds some effective ways to photograph men in the close quarters of a sub. The main draw is James Garner in his youthful prime; even if the movie doesn't exploit his comic talent, it shows how effortlessly he connects with an audience. The supporting cast consists of the kind of actors who inevitably seem to people a WWII ship's crew: solid character actors (Alan Hale Jr., who performed similar undersea duties in Destination Tokyo), oddballs and one-offs (Frank Gifford, Edd "Kooky" Byrnes), and future names (Warren Oates). --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-06-06

I found the documentary to be very interesting and I was able to learn a lot about the FBI. I do wish, however, that there was signifcantly more informatino regarding agent training.

3 out of 5 stars General Information on the FBI - but nothing spectacular........2007-02-28

This is a great DVD, however do not expect to get very in-depth about the way the FBI works. A brief history of "The Bureau" is given - much is skipped -- last 3/4 of the DVD is more about the 9/11 attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon.

While these events of 9/11 are important to show how changes occured in the FBI, very little emphasis is placed on Who the FBI is -- What they Investigate -- FBI Training, etc...

This documentary would have benefited greatly if it could have showed the pre-9/11 FBI and then the post-9/11 FBI, because their mission changed overnight -- and is not even close to being the same.

Buy the DVD if you want some general info. on the FBI - but for research purposes, etc.. (or even for those who wish to join the FBI and get a feel for it) you're honestly better of reading books by former agents, etc ...

As previously said, get the DVD if you want some general info. and a very basic understanding of who the FBI is.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary, Esp. Considering All Others on the FBI.......2005-05-15

Considering that there aren't many well put-together documentaries available on the FBI, I thought that this one was excellent. You can only cover so much in two hurs, and I thought that this one did a very good job of it. There is also a very long feature on Hogan's Alley (mock city training center used by the FBI in Virginia) in the Special Features that was shot sometime in the late 80s/early 90s. I highly recommend this DVD if you're interested in a career with the FBI.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly interesting/entertaining........2005-02-04

This is a fairly well-presented documentary on the FBI. The creators of this film did a good job explaining what the FBI's role is, how that role has changed, and what should be expected in the future. It is a fairly superficial documentary, though: don't expect any complex analysis/insights into the operations of the FBI. Nevertheless, the editors did a fairly good job, got some interesting footage, and showed things that rarely are shown.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad, just average........2004-06-26

This DVD was just OK, it wasn't good, and it wasn't bad. It goes in depth about how the FBI works in general, but doesn't go into cases in depth very much (Waco, Hanssen) etc. 90% of the video concentrates on how the FBI works now after 9/11, dealing with terrorism, but there wasn't any piece of it which highlighted thier priorities before 9/11. Some of the material nearly went as far as to being borderline propoganda, but the directors appear to have tried to stay away from that. It highlights some of the FBI's ups, and a few of thier down's. It goes into mostly how the FBI handles security of bigger events, but that was nothing new to me, and shouldn't be for any of you (snipers of roofs, instense screening, gaurds, etc.) Overall, I'd have to recomend you don't watch this, but if you know absolutely nothing about the FBI, this may be a good place to start learning.

When an American cargo plane carrying a top-secret anti-personnel device is shot down over war-torn Chechnya, Russian scientists are eager to investigate. But their curiousity leads to horrific death and destruction as they inadvertently unleash the most terrifying "weapon" the world has even known: a massive, biogenitically enhanced python with lightening-fast reflexes and voracious appetite for human flesh.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-16

this was a terrible sequel to a pretty good movie. it begins with a group of russian soldiers and an american commander leading them, how chessy, go looking for the snake to capture it and make some dough. they are successful at doing so but when they get it on a plane and ship it to america some dumb russians come along and shoot the plane down.then they bring it to some facility. when greg larson(zabka) finds out that the snake got out he tries to find it and kill it. he takes a few tourists along with him(ashbrook) and some other russian person and go hunting for it. the weirdest thing is the 2nd snake. it justs comes out of no where all of a sudden. he all of a sudden comes along when the other snake gets 1 of the guys and starts eating him and the other snake juts comes out of no where and starts eatin him 2. in genereal this was a horrible movie with awful effects and terrible acting. for the love of god do not see this movie.

1 out of 5 stars It watched it on fast forward!.......2005-09-07

Except for two cuties: William Zabka and Dana Ashbrook! Especially Dana who constantly having a hard-on!

3 out of 5 stars Python II.......2004-08-07

I really loved Python 1 after I bought it, so I ordered Python II off of amazon and it was great! It's not as entertaining and definetly not as funny as the first Python, but it's still fun to watch. Greg Larson(William "Billy" Zabka) returns in Python II as Agent Larson on a mission to capture another large snake that has again escaped due to an airplane crash. This time around the battle rages on in Russia. I wish there were some more special features on this disk, a commentary would be cool.

1 out of 5 stars MONTY'S MORE FRIGHTENING.......2004-03-12

Okay, we open with this brother American army dude telling these Russain soldiers what their mission is: capture (not kill) a huge python that somehow got thrown out of a plane and landed in Russia? Then we have this big fight scene where we hardly ever see the snake; unfortunately, with the major supporting cast being Russian or something, we can't hardly ever understand what they are saying. Then, when they load the snake onto a plane, some Russian rebels for no apparent reason shoot the plane down and the snake ends up in a Russian laboratory. Next we meet Dana Ashbrook as an American ex-baseball player who is now running a transport service with his Russian wife. They meet the irrepressible William Zabka as some kind of American dude who hires them to transport something (obviously the snake)...from here on, it's simply a matter of chasing and dodging the snake(s)---where did the other one come from! Whew!
Here's the bottom line:
STORY: Miserably constructed; the ex-baseball player obviously hit somebody so hard with one of his pitches that he is now paralyzed? Oh, boy! Score: 0
CAST: Poor William Zabka. This guy has played bad since his debut in KARATE KID, and it's a shame. He has a tough guy, yet boyish good looks, but he always plays the butthole. Let's give him a movie where he is the hero for a change. Dana Ashbrook of FALCON CREST has always been one of those actors who manages to constantly annoy me; his scene where he throws the bomb into the snake's mouth is one of the funniest scenes I've witnessed in a horror movie; come on! The rest of the cast is Russian, so who knows if they were any good or not. SCORE: 2 (for Zabka only).
TECHNICAL: Poor, to say the least.
DIRECTION: What? Did somebody helm this movie? SCORE: 0

1 out of 5 stars Not the worst movie ever, but by far the most inept........2004-03-01

I can't solemnly swear that I actually watched all of Python II, rather after ten minutes I screwed around on amazon.com etc and just listened to the dialogue and checking out the screen every 30 seconds or so.

Do I really need to tell you that plot (involving, *gasp* the military!) is simplistic contrived and lame? That it will find inconsequential characters in the bowels of a facility? That we learn most of their names when they die and another character screams "Mike! NOOOOOOOOOOO!"? That the special effects on the covor are about as good as the ones in the film? That the dialogue is like listening to a parrot strapped into a cuisinart? Or that the score uses snare drums when the military men appear? Or that there is not an iota of tension, fear or humor?

I mean, c'mon... the film is called PYTHON II (do I need to tell you that the roman numeral 2 is actually a pair of red slash marks?)

It's worse than Carnosaur.....

It's not however, the worst film ever made. It isn't offensive, just jaw-dropping, shockingly, mind-bogglingly awful, and an utter waste of time.

By the way, if you and your buds are looking to get drunk and make fun of a bad horror film for kicks don't come near this... I recommend JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 for that

2 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2006-11-15

This film is proof that an excellent cast cannot rise above inferior scriptwriting, directing and editing. Most scenes of this movie struggle against a script that sacrifices character development to the conveying of information. Mercifully, this is most blatant in the first 10 minutes of the movie in which choppy editing jerks the audience from scene to scene in a series of pogo jumps that instruct us on the childhood aspirations and early professional career of the protagonist, Gerald Bull. The ticker tape of facts continues through what must be the most leaden performance of Kevin Spacey's filmography, as he intones yet more information needed to convince the viewer that this is surely a very exciting film. Add to this the director's dispiriting decisions to have Arab characters speak to each other in English, and to have pivotal moments preceded far in advance by crescendos from the orchestra, and we can only be thankful that the flim provides, at the very least, a useful history lesson.

5 out of 5 stars espionage..and the merchants of death.......2006-09-19

watch this movie closely..It will show you all you need to know of the world of international espionage and those who play the great old game...This Movie truly expains how enemies are not really all that bad and how ones friend can be the monster lurking in the shadows..In my opinion the movies highlights the closing heyday of the Reagan-Bush international crusades and how the foot soldiers in the Intelligence field work ferverishly to fufill their masters agenda....And how a goverment can use, abuse, discredit and discard you if you refuse to play the game their way..This movie had a great cast, and was a real diamond in the rough. It has 2 parts. It highlights the genius of Gerald Bull,, and shows the darkside of a political agenda..

5 out of 5 stars Here's to the engineers.......2005-08-23

As an engineer's son, I have never seen a better portrayal of an engineer's enthusiasm for new problems and new challenges. In one unforgettable scene, Frank Langella brought to the screen for the first time in my opinion what can only be called, "the-joy-of-development."

Too often films that deal with invention focus on that moment when the problem comes together and is solved. What they fail to recognize is the first step, when the men and women are looking at the challenge ahead, has even more emotional potential.

Thankfully the writers and actors in this film did not forget this human truth.

The cast is excellent. The script is uneven, but the only reason this is obvious is because instead of staying mildly good throughout, like most made for cable films, this movie is mildly good with occasional scenes of brilliance; such as almost any moment what Langella or Spacey grace the screen.

If you are an engineer or just have one as a friend or member of the family, see this film. It's a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful film.......2004-02-09

This wonderful film tells the story of Dr. Gerald Bull, a genius engineer who modeled his `superguns' after the German Hengersutzer from WWI. His theory was that large guns could deliver payloads into space at more economical levels then rockets. Unfortunately his contracts were cancelled with the Canadian government and he became a freelance defense artillery expert, helping the S. Africans and Israelis and finally being hired by the Iraqi's in the 1980s to build a giant gun capable of hitting Tel Aviv or Tehran from Baghdad. This wonderful film portrays Saddam Hussiens regime in its heyday, when it was not a pariah and the Americans supported it. Wonderful acting by Alan Arkin, who plays an intelligence officer assigned to tracking Bulls movements in the West compliments the film. Simply a gem, a diamond in the rough, you will not be dismayed by this great subtle historical film.

    Description

Area 51, AKA Dreamland or Groom Lake, is the most mysterious "top-secret military test facility" in the world. New technologies vital to United States national security are developed here. Insiders claim that even recovered spacecraft of extraterrestrial origin are studied and test flown at Area 51.

Many strange stories speak of government involvement with alien technology and the recovery of alien spacecraft while other stories speak of incredible underground bases and exotic "new world order" technologies designed for global "mind-control" warfare. However, recently obtained government documents now reveal a connection between US military "black budget programs" and alien technology at Area 51.

In a three-year investigation, a German film crew dove deeply into the secrets of "Dreamland" and Area 51, interviewing top scientists and security personnel who worked inside Area 51 and claim to have seen what can only now be described as alien spacecraft of extraterrestrial origin.

This program presents the facts about these amazing discoveries and includes stunning film footage of the remarkable flight maneuvers of these mysterious alien spacecraft secretly recorded during test flights at Area 51.

1 out of 5 stars UFOs & Area 51: Secrets Of The Black World.......2007-02-26

Save your money. While this production was better than Flying Saucers Area Real it still isn't worth the price. It is horribly done with lots of shakey video footage of blurred lights in the sky. That and "he said she said" type stories. Some of the interviews have distracting background noises in them like the tape recorder was squeaking as the spindles turned! I thought something was wrong with my DVD player at first! Bob Lazar's interview is the only interesting/redeeming portion of the set. This was very disappointing. Get the Unsolved Mysteries UFO DVD set, but leave this one alone. It is really amature.

1 out of 5 stars Too much sensationalism.......2006-11-10

This movie uses too many zooms, overdubbed tracks and confusing editing. The videos that they use are powerful in themselves, but the producers of this film have decimated their integrity. A simpler presentation would have been better.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent - great information.......2006-08-09

This is one of the best UFO video's I have seen! The US media rarely shows 1/100th of the video and information available. This is an opportunity to hear Bob Lazar's full interview and that of CIA pilot John Lear's story as well. There is a lot of interesting information on S-4 section of Area 51. I had not heard about EBE's and Zeta Reticuli until I saw this video.

The really nice part of this video information is that viewers are not subjected to continuous insulting comments from Skeptic and other disinformation critics on the government's payroll... thankfully this video is excellent and uninhibited (unlike any anti-UFO, disinformational tripe presented by National Geographic and History channel).

Any production which George Knapp is involved with has been excellent thus far. Now if someone would do a video on the Dulce, New Mexico underground facility, it might shed more light on another seldom covered UFO/Alien issue.

    4 out of 5 stars Highly informative - recommended!.......2006-02-12

I think most people who even loosely follow the UFO topic are aware that for many years now the top secret Government / Military facility known as Area 51 has definately been host to some strange, highly advanced objects and top secret, experimental aircraft.

The burning question of everyones lips is - are any of these UFOs advanced alien spacecraft? - according to this documentry the answer is a resounding "yes". The makers of this film go far beyond speculation and assumption which is the usual method of investigation by these types of films and actually speaks to well known and respected military people, CIA test pilots, aviation experts and UFO investigators. Plus there is quite a few convincing photo and video documentation to back up their claims.

They also claim that the mysterious "Aurora" project was designed directly from some extraterrestral technology as well as the B2 Stealth bomber and various unmanned drones and spy planes etc.

The most convincing evidence that this is all indeed real is a certain piece of video footage that was shot in the 90's by an investigator who managed to find a mountain top which was not as heavilly gaurded as the rest and had a direct line of site to the Area 51 base - he actually films UFOs landing and taking off - amongst other various supply trucks and craft entering and leaving the base. There is also pictures taken from small aircraft of other bases near the area that show underground hanger doors and silo's - all very compelling evidence.

Area 51 is indeed a real place - plus there are many other underground facilities housing this technology - once you see this film it's not too hard to imagine that the US Government has known about UFOs for many years, has had an open dialogue with certain races of extraterrestrials for many years (which is still in development) - has reverse engineered a small portion of their technology and filtered it into the industrial military complex - and has kept all this information from the public for many years because of the impact on society, religion and traditions but most importantly kept it from reaching the hands of the USAs primary enemies - namely the Soviets, but now I supppose it would be North Korea, China and Al Queda.

For anyone interested in this subject matter I would recommend this DVD - If I had to offer up one negetive comment its the fact that the quality of this documentry is very poor. The sound and visual resolution in some parts are very poor. But it by no means takes anything away from the enjoyment - and it in by no means unwatchable - but it is clear that a poor video to dvd transistion was made.

Another negative point worth mentioning quickly is Bob Lazar - he is featured on this video - and offers a highly convincing interview. I'm still however very skeptical of Mr Lazar as no investigator has managed to proof 100% that he worked at any of the facilities he mentions. There have been other varified military and scientific people come forth and confirm Mr Lazars claims as being true, but many investigators still find that alot of his comments condtradict his previous interviews etc -

One point in Mr Lazars favor must be made - and that is he does not appear to be trying to profit from his claims. He has no book that Im aware of that he's trying to promote and he does not publicly speak at any conventions etc - and he generally fears for his life and keeps very low-key. He has however been recently arrested by Nevada State Police for writing a software program for a well known 'illegal' brothal. Because of this, the website ufowatchdog.com has entered him in the Hall Of Shame, alongside all the other well known and exposed UFO frauds.

I'm not personally convinced of Mr Lazar - and I'm not unconvinced either - anyway, watch his testimony and make your own conclusions.

Despite Mr Lazar I have no problem in recommending this film for any serious UFO buff / investigator. There is alot of compelling footage and fantastic claims made by credible people.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-05-27

This is one of the BEST DVDs of this genre that I have seen. The people in it are legendary in the field of Area 51 research and UFOs in general. There is a lot of information contained in this DVD that I have not heard of before though I read and watch everything on the subject that I can get. Forget the picture quality, which is not too bad, the information is worth it!

3 out of 5 stars "Minky" the Chimpanzee Saves the World: Corny But Amusing Romp.......2006-01-31

[ACTUALLY 2.5 STARS] If a kid can do a spy job, a monkey can do. `Spymate' features a super-spy chimpanzee `Minky' who can not only fly like a bird but also beat up the baddies and rescue the kidnapped secret agent (and Minky's partner) Mike (Chris Potter). If you see this opening sequence, you know exactly what you will see. `Spymate' is directed by Robert Vince, who (as producer) gave us the `Air Bud' series. Like his previous canine films, the clever animal is the main reason for which the film is made.

The story is a pale imitation of other family pictures. It is about one brilliant girl Amelia, only daughter of Mike, who invented `iodine oxide' laser drill. Sorry if I made a mistake about the exact name of her invention, but it is one great invention, the film says, for which Amelia is tricked into a conspiracy, and is kidnapped (without her knowing) by one bad scientist, who is about to do a most dangerous experiment in Japan.

So who is going to save her? And save the world too? It is Minky who goes back to work with the jolly members of the circus troupe. Equipped with the gadgets, and helped by the ninja troop, Minky and Mike go to Japan to rescue her and prevent the country's destruction.

To be frank, the story is thin and the gags are stale. But I am an adult, and I am not sure how the kids, especially pre-teens, would find the film. The gags are mostly slapstick, all too familiar type like a fat lady rolling like a ball, and some parodies of the 007 films such as "Dr. No" and Ursula Andress and her famous beach scene.

The cast include Emma Roberts (daughter of Eric Roberts, which means niece of Julia), Chris Potter, Richard Kind, Debra Jo Rupp, Michael Bailey Smith, Musetta Vender. Pat Morita appears as the master of Japanese ninja troop. But you know, it is Minky who steals the show.

`Spymate' is an innocuous family picture. It is a low-budget romp trying to keep the ball rolling, but its unoriginality (except the chimpanzee) is painfully obvious. It is not awful, and some parts are amusing, but largely uninspired.
