Nowadays it's rare to find a movie that pays attention to human weakness as well as strength, and that sees a whole person as having both. When a sports magazine gets bought by a media conglomerate, an ad sales executive named Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid, The Rookie) finds himself playing second-in-command to Carter Duryea, a hotshot barely half his age (Topher Grace, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!) whose marriage has just fallen apart. One evening Carter invites himself over to Dan's house to escape his loneliness, where he meets Dan's daughter Alex (Scarlett Johansson, Lost in Translation). The two strike immediate sparks and when they run into each other later in the city, a relationship begins--which they discreetly keep from Dan. But the heart of the movie is not in its plot, but in the way that Dan responds to the news that his wife is pregnant, or how Carter tries to fortify his self-image with a new car. These aren't jokes; the actors inhabit these moments fully and turn them into psychological events. Quaid plays Dan as a simple man, but his straightforwardness feels genuine (rather than a failure of the writer's imagination). Grace and Johansson have terrific chemistry as lovers, but so do Grace and Quaid, both as rivals and as a substitute father and son. In Good Company isn't likely to win any awards, but it's honest and honorable; there's a core of truth to its characters and their problems aren't resolved too neatly. I first caught the ending of this movie on one of the Cable Networks and I really liked it so I had to grab it off Amazon. I can really releate to many characters in this story.

Pretty good movie, but not my favorite plot.......2007-02-22

I hate all kinds of movies that deal with the business world. I really have had no respect for the business world since the creation of the "Yuppie". I feel that once the "Yuppie" was created that pretty much destroyed part of our work ethic. What I mean is the loyal part of the workplace. I see people float around from one workplace to another after a short time. I feel that when the "Yuppie" was created that the days of the long-term relationships with employer and employee were severed, and therefore no chance of making friends with those we work with, and work became less-appealling. I feel that's what happened in this movie as I would see people getting jerked around not knowing whether they will have a job tomorrow, or not, and bowing to a corporate raider like he/she's God. Having to sell out all your values for cold hard cash, and flaunt it in front of everybody. Well this movie did that, but it also showed a person can change when he/she wants to. With the supporting character of Carter he plays opposite Dennis Quaid as Quaid's boss, and he climbed up the corporate ladder rather fast as he's only 26. He would get married, and then divorced in short order, and then he rebounds with Quaid's oldest daughter, and then loses her. Quaid in the meantime has done the job shuffle all throughout the movie. I see this as the workplace out of balance where those who are at the top make out all right, and those in the middle like Quaid and Carter take a risk of getting fired, or laid off. I see this as a movie that makes me not want to go to work, but do like Carter does at the end of the movie, and that's jogging on the beach; not sure whether he has a job, or not, but at least he's happy. I look back, and see that the conception of the "Yuppie" was done in 1981 when Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers at Eastern Airlines when they went on strike. This destroyed the union as a whole as it became easier for corporations to thrwart strikes, and keeping unions in check, and keeping workers uncertain about thier futures. I just hate the plots like this, but this was done rather well with the performances of Quaid, Scarrlett Johannsen as Quaid's eldest daughter, and Carter. I probably wouldn't watch this one again just because of the plot.

Very good movie.......2006-10-19

The first time I watched In Good Company I said to myself, eh not good, not bad, just pretty average. A couple reviews reflect that. But ever since HBO started playing the movie constantly I find myself watching it more and more and enjoying it more and more. The best quality about this film is that it's real. You watch the story progress and you feel like you're watching reality. I never found myself saying, how unrealistic, that could never happen. The character's emotions seem real, the situations seem real. That all points to a well-acted, well-written film. Also, the movie doesn't try too hard. It doesn't go out of its way to be funny, doesn't go out of its way to give you a sappy, predictable ending or stupid scenarios that so many movies end with. Just an interesting plot that flows and moves along with realism in mind instead of Hollywood fantasy.

Not a typical no brainer movie. This movie presents complex people with complex motives. Topher Grace is effective as the successful executive who can impress top ranking executives, yet has an undeveloped personality in many ways. He is still trying to find out who he is and what he wants in life. This lack of maturity and goals costs him his wife. He focuses on his job even though he isn't passionate about the work. Quaid does not like his demotion, yet he tries to be fair to his new boss and doesn't try to sabatoge him. This is where the film differs from other, inferior movies. He is unhappy about his new status but tries to make the best of it. He even tries to help his new boss. The love story is played with honesty since Quaid's daughter is too young to commit hereself to anyone, yet she's attracted to her dad's new boss. Don't expect cheap laughs and simple answers.

This touching, 1991 Canadian film directed by Cynthia Scott takes the unusual step of casting nonprofessional actors, and the gamble pays off very well indeed. The story concerns eight elderly women whose tour bus breaks down driving through the wilderness. While waiting to be rescued, they find an abandoned house and look for food. The days and nights they end up spending away from civilization prove restorative to their spirits as each character gets an opportunity to tell her life story. The ensemble cast, as it turns out, essentially plays themselves in the film: the tales they tell are truly their own. A very talky, slowly paced production, it's best to get into the gentle rhythm of Scott's design and let the experience flow in the same way it does for the performers. --Tom Keogh

Brilliant and Endearing.......2006-02-24

This movie is one of the best. A heart warming, slow paced reflection on life, the indomitable human spirit, and the meaning of true friendship when it occurs between strangers. Join this group of elderly ladies whose day outing on a bus turns into a journey of interdependence, self disclosure and survival. The spirit of these characters is wonderful to see unfold and it is made all the better when it becomes clear that they are in fact 'acting' their own lives. The movie is accompanied by a Director's commentary that should not be missed and an outline of the characters. Anyone with a heart - and maybe an elderly mother/aunt/grandmother - will not fail to be moved by this brilliant movie. A must see and an exceptional addition to your library - mine is nearly always 'out on loan'!

The music was beautiful, next the scenery, then the honesty of the characters in their human condition and the peaceful pace. It is okay to be yourself...whatever.

"Survivor" for Seniors, but OH, so good!.......2004-12-20

This is a seriously good movie, for those on the search for a serious good movie, but don't go expecting much by way of a plot. With much of it improv, it feels more like a documentary. Like "survivor for seniors." What happens if you drop a busload of very old women off in the woods and tell them to fend for themselves?

It's all very civilized, and there's not a lot of urgency about it. No pulling straws to see who gets eaten. Just a bunch of old women (and one mildly injured young one) trying to figure out how to divide an apple into 7ths while sharing the details of their lives. The most intriguing, for me, aspect of this film is that the actresses played themselves. Nonagenerian Constance Garneau was really Nonagenerian Constance Garneau, and when she weeps with fear at the thought of her impending death it doesn't feel like acting. Octagenerian Cissy Medding's bewildered grief as she faces her own fear of a life unloved and alone is not feigned.

But don't let me mislead you--this movie is not depressing. It's affirming. These old girls get along very nicely with each other and their world, and while there are no answers to the deeper dilemmas they face (we do get the sense that Constance may find hers), they manage their present challenge with an enviable bon vivant. In places, in fact, it's very funny. The interaction between Mary Meigs and Cissy Meddings when Mary reveals her awkward secret is priceless.

Good friends, good movie. I highly recommend.
