Spaceballs (Collector's Edition)

Starring:Mel Brooks, John Candy
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)

Mel Brooks's 1987 parody of the Star Wars trilogy is a jumble of jokes rather than a comic feature, and, predictably, some of those jokes work better than others. The cast, including Brooks in two roles, more or less mimics the principal characters from George Lucas's famous story line, and the director certainly gets a boost from new allies (SCTV graduates Rick Moranis and John Candy) as well as old ones (Dick Van Patten, Dom DeLuise). Watch this and wait for the sporadic inspiration--but don't be surprised if you find yourself yearning for those years when Brooks was a more complete filmmaker (Young Frankenstein). --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
This movie was a gift to sci-fi fans.......2007-06-12
I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 4 years old and a Star Wars fan ever since I was 7. Both TV/film franchises hold a special place in my heart. I was also a fan of Mel Brooks (I had seen History of the World: Part One countless times as well as Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, etc.)
Then, at the wonderful age of 17, I saw Spaceballs at the theater.
OH.....MY.....GOD!
From the opening scene when the gargantuan spaceship flies across the screen and keeps going and going and going and going, I knew I was in for a treat. For the first few seconds, I took the scene for what it was, but after I realized what Brooks was "saying" with the scene, I burst out laughing. How ingenius!
During the run of the film, I laughed so hard that my stomach and face muscles were sore for days afterward. Obviously, a lot of love went into this film. Great attention to detail was made when it came to the names, costumes, special effects, music, etc.
Much of the humor is juvenile, but that's what's so damn endearing about Spaceballs. The movie makes no aplogies for itself and attacks almost all popular sci-fi venues.
Obviously, the biggest influence of the film was Star Wars, but Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Transformers, and even the old classic Bugs Bunny cartoons.
At the price this DVD is going for, you can't afford to pass up a classic film like this. Comedy fans will enjoy it, but sci-fi fans will love it that much more.
"May da schwartz be wit youoooooo.....oh, what a world! What a world....."
"Buckle this! Ludicrous Speed! Go!".......2007-05-15
"Spaceballs" is a sci-fi spoof that reserves some fair ribbing for the Star Wars franchise. With the comic genius of Mel Brooks, "Spaceballs" reduced me to choking attempts to sustain life while blowing popcorn from orifices that I would rather not mention.
The great comic acting from the likes of John Candy, Bill Pullman, Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis made the movie something special. It is a great laugh, though nothing high-brow. It is a spoof through and through, and it does that very well.
Dark Helmet (Moranis) really steals the show. Scenes such as that where he is acting out sordid fantasies with some action figures, or when he orders the ship to "ludicrous speed", really make the movie. Moranis was surprisingly good in that role, making Dark Helmet seem like a vindictive 7-year-old. I loved him.
"Spaceballs" is a great laugh, both for the verbal and visual humour, (the huge ship's bumper sticker: "We Brake for No One"). Overall, an awesome spoof and one of the best spoofs I have seen in ages. I loved it and have watched it many a time.
May The Schwartz Be With You.......2007-04-03
For those of us whom grew up with Battlestar Galactica and the mother of all sci-fi movies - "Star Wars", this is an affectionate and hilarious spoof of the sci-fi genre. It's ludicrously funny and gross at the same time. The best casting was in Rick Moranis as "Dark Helmet" and the scene where he plays with his dolls is hysterical. The double entendres keep you rolling in your seats. It's not Mel's best work - "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein", but it will really strike a nerve with sci-fi lovers. I especially loved the rip-off scene from "Aliens". Let's go to ludicrous speed!
Can't wait Untill the CARTOON!!!!!.......2007-02-13
This is the greatest movie EVER! I that night when my dad told me about the movie we were going to watch, but I never heard of it, I didn't see a trailer, I didn't see a picture, NOTHING! All my dad said was "It's like Star Wars," I almost pee'ed myself, I couldn't stop laughing, and I couldn't stop watching it (Seriously, I played the tape 15 times I think!)
Today, I'm a Star wars fan, but I will always remember that movie that saved Star Wars frombeing dead (This movie was released 4 years after Return of the Jedi) and it was releashed at the best, the tenth anniversery of Star Wars, but now, there will be a Spaceballs cartoon, releashed during the 30th anniversery! It will be realeashed November, or as I call it "then." When will then be now? Soon!!!!
Great science fiction spoof.......2007-01-04
I am a Mel Brooks fan to begin with, so he can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. There are so many hidden double entendres, you have to see it several times to catch all of them... as with all Brooks' movies. I do not like science fiction, so I may be missing many of the jabs regarding Star Wars, but I love this movie just the same. Spaceballs is my fourth favorite of the Brooks' films.

Customer Reviews:
Mel Brooks is awesome.......2007-05-13
We bought this movie mainly for Men in Tights, and when we saw for only $5 more we could own Spaceballs as well, we jumped on it. Absolutely love Mel Brooks. And Cary Elwes is just spectacular, it's a shame he hasn't had more roles than he has. If you are a fan of Star Wars, Spaceballs is the best (heck you don't even have to be a fan of it, the movie is hilarious nonetheless) Of course the comedy is a bit crude, and there are some jokes in there I still don't quite understand, but anything by Mel Brooks is sheer genious!
Two for the Price of Humor!!!!!.......2007-04-22
Wow, i remember when I saw these two movies together as a set. I thought, "Dude I want it!!!!" I bought it, because Spaceballs will always be a classic comedy!! (I'm a mawg, half man half dog, i'm my own best friend) RIP Candy! (Comb the desert) First of all, Mel Brooks comedy is to be watched with a sense of dry and cheesy humor. Its not the best witty remarks, but the jokes are funny . . . . We've been jammed? lol Raspberry? whatever it was! Too funny.. . . Men in tights? We're Butch! David Chappelle, I never would of thought he would become this famous but was so funny in that movie. . . When he was jumping over the creek back and forth :) (Hope someone has a video camera!!) when getting beaten!!! Both Movies are awesome and great to watch all over again!!

--Tom Keogh
Description
The farce is with you in this "uproarious salute to science fiction" (The Hollywood Reporter) that teams comedy legend Mel Brooks with an all-star cast of cutups including John Candy (Splash), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters) and Bill Pullman (Ruthless People)! When the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) attempts to steal all the air from planet Druidia, a determined Druish Princess (Daphne Zuniga), a clueless rogue (Pullman) and a half-man/half-dog creature who's his own best friend (Candy) set out to stop him! But with the forces of darkness closing in on them at ludicrous speed, they'll need the help of a wise imp named Yogurt (Brooks) and the mystical power of "The Schwartz" to bring peaceand merchandising rightsto the entire galaxy!
