How's this for impressive trivia: Dodgeball faced off against The Terminal in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughn) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughn and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of Globo Gym, who's threatening a buy-out. That's it for story; any 5-year-old could follow it with brainpower to spare. But Thurber, Vaughn, Stiller, and their well-cast costars (including Stiller's off-screen wife, Christine Taylor) keep the big laughs coming for 96 nonsensical minutes. With spot-on cameos by champion bicyclist Lance Armstrong, David Hasselhoff, Hank Azaria, Chuck Norris, and William Shatner, and a crudely amusing coda for those who watch past the credits, Dodgeball is no masterpiece, but you can bet Spielberg was unexpectedly humbled by its popular appeal. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Everybody loves to see a good wrench-to-the-head scene.......2007-06-27

Ok, very funny movie. Quite a bit of language from Rip Torn, although it's funny/embarrasing. I don't think the Unrated version is any better than the other cut. So what ever's cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Silly and totally hilarious movie!.......2007-05-25

I really didn't know what to expect when I watched this movie, but I certainly didn't expect to be laughing so hard that my stomach hurt! Ben Stiller truly inherited some comic chops from his comedian dad Jerry Stiller, and it shows in this movie. He is unequivocably funny every time he's on screen. Vince Vaughn, with his less flamboyant and more deadpan style of humor, is just as funny as the leader of the opposing team. And what a silly premise - dodgeball! It's the game you haven't thought about since you were 10 years old, and to think there's a movie about it that is actually VERY FUNNY. Enjoy this silly movie that is very, very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Comedy.......2007-05-21

I am glad that once in a year a person can see a good comedy where people try to achieve something to save themselves from downfall.
Ben Stiller is pretty awesome and rough in his character. I would have preferred more effects when contestants are hit by the ball.
Neverthless outstanding 'unique' comedy- belongs with Get Shorty, Borat, and Dumb and Dumber.

5 out of 5 stars FUN! A poopy-flavored lollipop will never look the same.......2007-04-26

A superb cast, super-funny script and lots of fun loaded with physical comedy make Dodgeball a winner. Never a lull in the laughs, this film is an upbuilding, fun flick to share with friends. Rooting for the underdog is an exciting and hilarious experience. Watch with friends.

4 out of 5 stars Dodgeball has the Patches O'Houlihan seal of approval.......2007-04-23

What is there to say about Dodgeball - A True Underdog Movie other than it's a no-brainer of a hilarious movie that doesn't aspire to lofty heights. What it does do is come out firing with some of the funniest physical comedy and one-liners since The Farrelly Brothers' Something About Mary. First time director Rawson Marshall Thurber does a good enough job to keep the laughs coming one right after the another to keep Dodgeball from becoming too repetitive.

The movie is a riff from the stock underdog sports genre with a Peter La Fleur (played by Vince Vaughn with his usual sardonic wit) having to find a way to save his Average Joe's Gym from being foreclosed by his bank and turned by a rival hi-tech gym next door into a parking lot. Who else would be the perfect foil for Vince Vaughn's Peter La Fleur but none other than Ben Stiller as the former-fatty turned workout fitness Nazi, White Goodman. Goodman's Globo Gym is a state-of-the art, sterile and BALCO-like gym where insults and making its members feel ugly, fat and useless is the way to clean health and the perfect bod.

Already, within the first fifteen minutes, we know who to root for and who to boo. In one corner we have the Average Joe's guys played with comedic timing by Justin Long, Stephen Root, Chris Williams, Alan Tudyk and Joel Moore. Stiller's Goodman and his consigliere Me'Shell (Jamal Duff channelling Barry White) with a hand-picked ringer of a dodgeball team he calls the Purple Cobras. With the two sides set the dodgeball carnage begins as Average Joe's must win the Las Vegas Dodgeball Invitational to earn the $50,000 needed to save the gym. To round out the Average Joe's team will be the bank accountant who ends up sympathizing with the Joe's, Kate Veatch (played by Stiller's real-life wife, Christine Taylor) and Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn in a scene-stealing role).

Rip Torn is hilarious as the acerbic and insane former Dodgeball great Patches O'Houlihan. He pretty much gets all the best one-liners in the movie the moment he appears on the screen. He coaches the Average Joe's team by browbeating them, insulting them and, failing that, throwing wrenches at them to help them in learning the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive, dodge. In fact, I would say that if it wasn't for Rip Torn's character dominating the middle part of the movie, I think Dodgeball's constant ball to the groin shots would've gotten old. Instead Patches O'Houlihan constantly gave people watching a reason to laugh out loud.

Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story is a movie that the Academy voters will not think twice about showering with praises and awards, but I'm sure most of them will be watching it and laughing out loud like the rest of the movie-going public. Dodgeball is one hilarious, one-liner after one-liner ball to the nuts funny and it doesn't aspire to be anything else but that. This movie will never get old with each viewing and will continue to make people laugh out loud.

Dodgeball PSP UMD Movie MODEL- 19731 VENDOR- UMD MOVIE FEATURES- Dodgeball PSP Movie Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story revolves around amiable underachiever Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), whose rundown gym, Average Joes, is populated by a less- than-average clientele including a self-styled pirate, an ultra- obscure sports aficionado, and a pining high school nerd. Despite Average Joes posing little threat to Globo Gym, a fitness Goliath owned by White Goodman (Ben Stiller), Peters humble recreation center becomes a subject of much controversy when Goodman learns of his competitions less than meticulous bookkeeping. Determined to expand his empire, Goodman hires attorney Kate Veach (Christine Taylor) to initiate a hostile takeover of the gym. Peters ragtag group of regulars, however, are less than thrilled with the prospects, and mobilize a showdown, winner-takes-all Dodgeball tournament against Globo Gym. The film also features Missi Pyle, Rip Torn, Stephen Root, and Alan Tudyk. -- SPECIFICATIONs ----------------------------------- MPAA Rating : PG13 Genre : Ensemble Film, Sports Comedy Theatrical Date : 2004 Run Time : 92 minutes Distributor/Studio: 20th Century Fox sonystyle.com

How's this for impressive trivia: Dodgeball faced off against The Terminal in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughan) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughan and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of Globo Gym, who's threatening a buy-out. That's it for story; any 5-year-old could follow it with brainpower to spare. But Thurber, Vaughan, Stiller, and their well-cast costars (including Stiller's off-screen wife, Christine Taylor) keep the big laughs coming for 96 nonsensical minutes.

1 out of 5 stars What a bunch of Bozos.......2007-02-12

This is not exactly top shelf drama. Mostly very juvenile type humor, if you want to call it that. Two thumbs down!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2006-12-09

This movie makes me laugh for a different reason every time I watch it. I enjoy the supporting characters the most. They are each interesting and wildly funny. I guarantee that you will laugh.

4 out of 5 stars LOL.......2006-01-05

Dodgeball ROCKS! I love it!! It has it's moments (funny and BORING...), I love the part after the ending theme!! It's just gross!

5 out of 5 stars One of The Funniest movies of All Time!!.......2005-05-12

I saw This movie and I liked it. So When The PSP version comes out, I will be first to get it. I've heard that some psp movies are very dark even when the brightness setting is all the way up. I hope this movie looks just like the one on dvd. pick it up when it comes out!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not Just a Dodgeball Movie, A Landmark Film.......2005-04-15

This movie is one of the greatest sports movies ever. I liked the part where Patches (Rip Torn) hits Justin (Justin Long) with a wrench. I even liked the ESPN part where they showed crazy sports like Riding Mower Racing and playing Soccer with a soccerball on fire, and I thought that Black Dodgeball Team was funny (even though it was a little bit racist), but you know, I wanted to see the team called the M.I.L.F (Mom I'd Like to F*** You Know What I Mean) Dodgeball Team, because it reminded me of this team called the Mermaid Force in a comic book called Harlem Beat where they seduce their opponents in basketball. I think Vince Vaughn would make a great nomination for "Best Male Performance," "Best On-Screen Team" with the Average Joes and "Best Kiss" with Christine Taylor, and Ben Stiller would make "Best Villian," and "Best Comedic Performance," at this years 2005 MTV Movie Awards. I give this a 10 out of 10. By the way, this isn't just a dodgeball movie, it's a landmark film.
