Tom Hanks was a relatively unknown TV actor with a sitcom as his biggest credit when relatively unknown director Ron Howard (best known for his own sitcom acting) cast him in this surprise hit. It made stars of Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and John Candy and an A-list director out of Howard. Hannah is a mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his lovable blowhard brother (Candy), whose goal in life is to have a letter published in Penthouse. When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret. But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy, though the biggest laughs belong to Candy. --Marshall Fine

Splish Splash.......2007-05-24
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I thought Daryl Hannah was the prettiest thing on earth and I wanted to be just like her. I used to swim in pools with my feet together and pretend I was a mermaid in the hopes that I could talk to marine life, sun myself on rocks, and be the object of mystery and myth. Seeing it again just recently with the commentary made it a new and wonderful experience all over again.
Tom Hanks, an unknown, in Ron Howard's directorial debut, plays Alan, a happless, somewhat bumbling EveryMan who was rescued by a mermaid as a child. He jumped off a boat in Cape Cod, and met the mermaid (later named Madison) underwater. Years later, she once again rescues him from drowning, and comes to New York City in search of him. As he and Darryl Hannah were unknowns, most of the heavy comedy routines were preformed by John Candy and Eugene Levy, who pay off everytime. Part of the hilarious and sweet nature of this movie is Madison's innocence in the meanest city in America, New York. Turning up naked at the Statue of Liberty and smiling so innocently at the crowd is just one of the hilarious scenes. Watching it again with the commetary is a wonderful experience, as they tell tales of near mishaps, story outline, and how they did the special effects (the mermaid tale). And even today, everytime I hear that a couple has named their new baby Madison, I remember that the name became so popular because of this movie.
This was made in an age where there was an E.T. formula for a lot of movies. In that the lead (Tom Hanks) takes on a poor, helpless creature and tries to introduce said helpless creature into their world. Eventually, like in E.T., an evil government force takes the helpless creature from the lead and they suffer. The lead rescues the helpless creature from the clutches of the evil government force, and releases them to their natural habitat. Unlike E.T., however, the lead goes with the creature. Perhaps because E.T. was a movie staring children characters and Splash was a movie with adult characters, but Ron Howard reveiled in their commentary that in the original ending Alan didn't go with Madison to the sea. But, his wife and others insisted to him that he had to change it and go with her.
Something that really hit home with me was something that John Candy said about love in this movie. Tom says to him that he was angry and disappointed that the woman he loved more than anything was a fish. People fall in love everyday, and look what he got! John Candy says "Oh yeah, look what you got! People fall in love everyday?! Most people will never be that happy! I'll never be that happy!". And that is certainly true. People throw things away. People make mistakes. And, the world's full of lonely people. Things don't always work out the way you want them to, especially with love. So what if the woman's a fish? Tom was pretty annoying too and she accepted him for what he was. Too bad some people don't feel the same way.
Enjoy it. Don't let this one get away.
Such a good movie.......2007-04-11
This movie holds up good, and is timeless in so many ways. The DVD extras are resent and have background stuff you would not otherwise know about. Plus, that Daryl Hannah can swim like a fish.
See it again!.......2007-03-30
I gave this to a nine year old godchild who is in love with mermaids. She was mesmerized! The movie still stands up today...a classic. I would give it five stars, except there weren't many extras in this DVD. I know that this movie originally was going to be longer because they had a lot more film of the underwater world of the mermaid that was left on the cutting room floor. Apparently, it's still there, because no deleted scenes made it to the DVD. Also, a word of caution if you are also planning on giving it to a young one...there are a few curses and adult language that I had forgotten about. Ooops. You might want to watch it first before you give it to your own kids.
A Tom Hanks Classic.......2007-02-22
I bought this movies because I love Tom Hanks! And Daryl Hanna was a great match-up. I can watch this movie over and over. It's just a fun movie to watch when you need a comedic lift!!! AND not to forget ever John Candy & Eugene Levy!!!
Perfection (once again)!!!.......2007-02-02
I waited awhile for this dvd to arrive, but was aware that it would take awhile. I was seriously expecting a used, battered copy, but this was brand new, not even opened, and I couldn't be happier. Well worth the wait!!!

Take a Ride in a Brand New Wiggly Way.......2007-06-13
For the first time ever, the Wiggles have more than just the Big Red Car... they also have a Big Red Boat. This time, Anthony is doing the driving instead of Greg-only in one of the bonus features' storybook.
I'm getting used to singing some of the old songs in english while the animated Mariachi Wiggles sang them in spanish. There's a special Wigglehouse scene that I know very well from Playhouse Disney.
Disappointed with 1st Wiggles Purchase.......2007-02-24
We don't have cable, so my daughter isn't exposed to the Wiggles on TV. She has been enamored with previews of other wiggles videos, and I actually enjoyed them myself.
This video seems like a random selection, and I was very disappointed in the lack of choreography on the part of the wiggles themselves. The educational value was also disappointing, as I expected more from someone who majored in education in college. Learning can be fun, I'm just not sure how much my daughter will actually learn from this series of random songs.
We have watched the first 20 minutes of this, and that's about all I could take. My sister in law warned me, suggested I choose Little Einsteins or Blue's Clues... I should have listened to her.
My 16 month old daughter does seem to enjoy the video, so I will probably let her watch it while I'm in the shower and she is in her pack and play.
Perhaps I am being overly critical, as a first time Mom. I am not sure whether I should be glad or worried that my daughter actually seems to like it.
Same Old Songs.......2006-08-26
I agree with the other two reviewers that the Wiggles really need some fresh material! This is completely recycled songs just sung in front of a different set. And yes, there are 3 or 4 songs sung in spanish that my kids were completely disinterested in. We love the Wiggles, have seen them in concert twice and have a lot of their DVD's. But, this one really bores.
Please guys, get us some new stuff!
Not the best, but still entertaining..........2006-08-18
This one isn't our favorite, but still worth buying for a devoted Wiggles fan.
Kept Attention.......2006-08-02
I have been pleased with the Big Red Boat DVD. It is a normal, silly Wiggles video...nothing really different than their recent stuff. There are a couple of new songs though. Being that most of the Wiggles videos are also the same segments used in their Disney show, it was nice to see something a little different than what my kids can watch every day. My oldest son (2 1/2) asked to watch the DVD quite a bit when we first got it.
Just an FYI, it is a really long video...about 50 minutes or so. Since it was so long, I felt like I got my money's worth.

Product Description
BABYPRO videos are created to visually enhance the world of our littlest viewers. Most sports imagery is quick-paced and features many players, a format which is difficult for babies to follow. BABYPRO videos are characterized by bright, vivid sports imagery and slow-motion action sequences that are easier on babies' eyes. Also, because babies' brains can become accustomed to the beauty of computer-generated imagery and overly saturated colors, making real-life imagery seem dull in comparison, BABYPRO videos feature only true color and real-life action. Furthermore, BABYPRO knows that babies enjoy watching other babies so our videos feature adorable infants and toddlers engaging in many kinds of active play. The DVD helps with congintive funcitons and can be used as a great learning tool. It teaches words and pharses through progressions with the child hearing phrases like "splash with your hands" and "kick with your feet". The DVD is committed to helping child learn and have fun.

Customer Reviews:
Self-indulgent is an understement.......2007-01-11
This movie is just awful. I have read the other reviews here. All I can say is, if you appreciate Hockney's work, find a way to really look at it.
This certainly isn't it. If you feel you just have to see this because you'll do anything "Hockney", do yourself a favor and rent the thing.
I liked it........2006-09-03
It is not true that the film made a horrible transfer to DVD. The quality is wonderful, especially for a film that was made in the 70's. In fact, I'd say it was a labor of love for whomever processed the original prints. This is a film about David Hockney so there's no chase scene. He is an artist, and artists are a little different from the rest of us, so this film is a little different from what you might expect if you don't know anything about art or artists. I think Peter Schlesinger is very pretty and I would like to have gotten to know him better but the film never peers into his personality, and I think that is intentional. I find David Hockney much more attractive in that he is warm, funny, artfully clever, and human. He reminds me so much of that fuzzy teddy-bear that I had when I was a boy. I sure miss him. Whether you buy it or rent it, you should probably see it if you want to know something about David Hockney.
Some Insights into the Creative Process of David Hockney.......2006-08-08
Jack Hazan's quasi-documentary A BIGGER SPLASH is an unfocused examination about the creative life of David Hockney and supposedly about the effect of his past relationship with his pupil Peter Schlesinger (an artist, sculptor, and photographer who Hockney not only enjoyed as a lover but as a disciple). The précis appears to be that Hockney, in the throes of disappointment about the dissolution of his affair with Peter, decides to move to California where he has already been established as a painter of California people and places.
In London we meet his friends - Celia Birtwell, the elegantly stylishly beautiful model Hockney used repeatedly, dress designer Ossie Clark, confidant Mo McDermott, and patron Henry Geldzahler - each of whom Hockney painted and drew. We watch as Hockney visits the galleries and admires works of his friends, how he paints in his studio, how he relates to his gallerists (like Paul Kasmin), and how he perceives men and other artists.
Peter Schlesinger figures prominently in the film with many episodes of Peter's swimming in the pools of the people Hockney would eventually immortalize. He is a fine presence and carries his silent role well - almost appearing as a ghost muse that keeps Hockney focused on his now infamous swimming pool paintings.
The magic of this film, for those to whom Hockney is a well known and important painter, is the visual recreation of the paintings that have made him so famous: we are allowed to see Celia and her husband with white cat in context with the canvas, the view of Peter staring into the pool at an under water swimmer, the woman and her animal heads who appears in another of Hockney's famous paintings at poolside, etc. This kind of cinematic background is valuable now and will prove invaluable to the archives of David Hockney. For those people this is a must-see film, despite its meandering technique and choppy editing. For others, it may seem too self-indulgent. Grady Harp, August 06
Who Was This Movie Made For?.......2006-07-19
David Hockney didn't like this movie. It was way too personal for Hockney (and too explicitly homosexual for the average heterosexual preference). He thought it was going to have a lot about his paintings and him talking about art. Instead it follows his failing relationship with his lover, Peter, who was a major inspiration of his paintings at that time.
15% of this film is about art. There's about 8 minutes collectively of Hockney in his studio and painting. One minute of him talking about what's on his mind with art. Six or so, 20 second scenes where they re-create some of his great paintings at that time; and a few scenes where he's being hounded about his production and selling his art. And what's most interesting to me is he was in the middle of painting "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)"- so you see a little of the process of how that painting came about.
Take away that 15%, what's left is a homosexual film that's poorly edited.
Huge Disappointment!!!.......2006-05-28
I ordered this DVD and anxiously awaited its arrival only to find a terribly boring and pseudo-intellectual collection of rubbish not worthy of my time. And as another reviewer pointed out, the DVD transfer is abyssmal! For those of you who want to determine for yourselves if this is a decent film, I suggest you try renting it before buying. Believe me, you will be glad you did. And those of you who are willing to learn from my mistake, try satisfying your thirst for knowledge of the life, aesthetic and circle of Hockney with a book or other source (I believe there are other films out there as well). This particular work will leave you feeling robbed.
