Meg Ryan emerges bloodied but unbowed from this botched comedy by Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill). Ryan plays a woman whose fiancé (Timothy Hutton) leaves her for a Parisian beauty. She jets over to the City of Lights to fight for her man, but an incapacitating fear of flying forces her to seek help from a fellow passenger, a French thief played by Kevin Kline, who then tutors her in the ways of getting her beau back. Kasdan seems incapable of pacing the story, let alone getting a firm grip on its comic tone and intentions. The production sputters and regroups and stalls repeatedly, forcing Ryan, particularly, to find the boundaries of her own screwball performance. --Tom Keogh

Not bad for a rainy afternoon........2007-06-25
This movie isn't one that I would go to the movies to see, but is worth watching on a rainy afternoon at home. It's cute, and will do in a pinch. I'd buy it again for that purpose.
Lots of fun.......2007-06-16
The more I watch this film, the more I love it. It's funny, well-paced and Meg and Kevin (as always) are great!
All Time Favorite Girly Movie!.......2007-04-04
My college roommates and I watched the VHS version of this movie so many times we wore the tape out. Bad day at the internship, boyfriend broke up with you, need a good movie to nap to while skipping class...this is your movie! I was so happy to find it on Amazon and even happier that it arrived so quickly and in brand new condition!
Comical Romance.......2007-03-21
I just love this movie. I have seen it at least 10 times if not more and it is one that i just have not tired of. It's a great blend of comedy and romance. Meg Ryan and Kevin Klien make an interesting couple and the scattering of other French and Euro charters makes this a must have for my little library of romance movies.
One of the best performances by these actors.......2007-03-19
Wow, great movie! Keeps you laughing and brings a few tears as well. I think the actors do a great job and give one of their best and most mature performances ever.

She's the One: Following the success of his spunky, 1995 directorial debut, The Brothers McMullen, Edward Burns suffers a little sophomore slump with this comedy about a pair of rivalrous brothers who get into bizarre relationships with women in a fierce but immature pursuit of happiness. When they find they both have a complicated interest in the same woman (Cameron Diaz), things come to a head. The film is a little overwritten, undershot, bulky, slow, and static, but it is also funny and inventive--further proof that Burns knows his New York City beat as well as Woody Allen does. With Jennifer Aniston, Maxine Bahns, and John Mahoney. --Tom Keogh

French Kiss/She's the One.......2007-04-14
5 Stars for the great feel-good romantic comedy, French Kiss. 3 Stars for She's the One. I don't know whether it's my DVD player or this particular version, but the spoken words don't go with the mouth movements, which was very distracting.

Kiss the Girls
Coming after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, this thriller about a collaboration between two serial killers feels like a pale attempt to cash in on the success of those earlier, better films. That's a pity, because this film certainly has its strengths--particularly in the central performances of Morgan Freeman as a forensic detective and Ashley Judd as a would-be victim who escaped from one of the killers. Director Gary Fleder demonstrates visual flair and maintains an involving undercurrent of tension, but as this adaptation of James Patterson's novel approaches its climax, familiar elements combine to form a chronic case of thriller déjà vu. It's altogether competent filmmaking in the service of a moribund story of competing psychopaths, and by the time the serial killers reach the home stretch of their twisted contest, the movie's dangerously close to Freddy Kruger territory, with a finale that could've been borrowed from any dozen similar thrillers. --Jeff Shannon
Along Came a Spider
After an obligatory prologue in which its detective hero suffers a tragic professional setback, Along Came a Spider sets about its business of luring the viewer into its nefarious plot, relying on the magician's technique of misdirection to reveal a double-whammy surprise. The clever, late-coming plot twist is a bit too mechanical but effectively unexpected, making this a satisfying prequel to the hit thriller Kiss the Girls--based on the first of James Patterson's Alex Cross detective novels--and a welcomed addition to a promising movie franchise. It's no better or worse than a good vintage episode of Peter Falk's Columbo, adhering closely to the mystery-thriller's time-honored traditions, but with Morgan Freeman settling comfortably into his role as seasoned sleuth Alex Cross, familiar formula is given fresh vitality.
When a senator's daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Cross into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective's involvement will bring high-profile publicity. Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait... the movie's got a rabbit in its hat... and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve... and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to The Edge) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation. Don't look for much depth of character here, but Along Came a Spider is well served by everyone involved. It's the movie equivalent of a bestseller you'd impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds. --Jeff Shannon
Double Jeopardy
Young Libby Parsons (Ashley Judd) is happy as a clam, and why not? She's got a loving, successful husband (Bruce Greenwood), an adorable son, and an island home to die for. One morning, after a romantic sailing expedition with her husband, Libby finds herself covered in blood. Her husband's missing, the boat resembles a murder scene, and there's a knife on the deck. One might stop right there and call for help; Libby, however, takes matters--or, more specifically, the knife--into her own hands, and the moment she does, there's the Coast Guard. Faster than you can say frame-up, Libby's been charged with murder and jailed, with her young son stripped from her custody. It's all cut-and-dried, except for one thing: Libby's husband isn't dead, and she's about to track him down. And thanks to the Fifth Amendment's double jeopardy rule, she can't be charged twice for his murder.
Double Jeopardy has a singularly seductive revenge premise and, in Judd, one of the most seductive leading ladies to grace the silver screen in recent years. So then why does this thriller feel like it came from the bottom of the Lifetime television movie barrel? Instead of taking a gritty, hard-boiled approach, the film plays up all of Libby's mushy emotions--tellingly, the director here is Bruce Beresford, whose best film, Driving Miss Daisy, is as far from thriller territory as you can get. No matter how stoically or deviously Judd plays her, Libby comes across as a soccer mom with a slight taste for blood. Only in a few scenes, specifically when she tracks her wily husband to his new identity in New Orleans, does Judd get to strut her stuff, stealing an evening gown and crashing his charity auction. Most of the time, though, this thriller offers only a smattering of suspense. Well, at least like Libby, the filmmakers can't be condemned twice for the same crime. With Tommy Lee Jones duplicating his Fugitive role, as Libby's conscientious parole officer. --Mark Englehart

Description
This outrageous witches' brew of gothic mayhem blends equal parts of Frankenstein, Dracula, and H.P. Lovecraft, starring a veritable Who's Who of familiar faces (and figures) from the 1970s heyday of Spanish horror. When the Countess de Moncourt is left destitute by the suicide of her husband, she resumes her maiden identity as Claire Grandier, medium! Teaming up with telepathic Dr. Gambier, she accepts an invitation from the Duke de Haussement to preside over a seance at a wild party. The pair are invited to stay at the chateau in exchange for lessons in the occult sciences, but Claire secretly plots revenge via necromancy against the Duke for depleting her estate. Working from the cellar with a lascivious dwarf, she and Gambier reanimate a local pauper's corpse and mentally guide it to commit murder, creating a soulless killing machine!
Customer Reviews:
Dull.......2004-02-23
A widow blames her husband's suicide upon a group of aristocrats who subsequently grabbed up all of his estate, leaving her destitute. She studies the arcane, pronounces her allegiance to the devil, and decides to create a Frankenstein monster in order to wreak vengeance. She funds her studies by performing seances under a new name until one of her intended victims hires her, recognizes her, and decides to finance her and provide her with facilities for her research into the arcane, in which he shares an interest. Most of this history is provided through narrative. The bulk of the film then deals with her eventually creating a monster (a tall, bald man who keeps one eye shut, is covered in white powder and has scars drawn on with mascara) while keeping her exact activities secret from her clueless benefactor. Except for a hillarious early 1970s fashion show sequence, and a little cheese here and there, this film is extremely dull and moves far more slowly than any of the old Hammer Frankenstein movies, while lacking their wit. It does have an evil dwarf (a guilty pleasure of mine), but he is completely wasted (he just hides in the basement until the villainess decides to kill him for no reason). As with most bad horror films, the police who investigate the various murders(when we finally get to them), as well as all those occupying the castle where this all takes place, fail to get a clue until the very end of the film.
Although I also consider Lady Frankenstein to be weaker than any of the Hammer Frankenstein films, it is a better female-lead Frankenstein-style-monster film than Devil's Kiss. In conclusion, this film is a renter, not a buyer. It may be worth noting the director never made a second horror film.

Description
John Bradley operates and lives in a mortuary along with his wife, Martha, and daughter, Susan, who collects tarantula spiders and has always been ostracized by her friends because... well she's a little bit strange. In true schlocky b-movie horror fashion, this is a real All-American dysfunctional family. When Susan discovers that mommy dearest is plotting to have dear old dad killed by her secret lover, who is also dad's brother, she places a tarantula in mommy's bed while she sleeps. Abruptly awakened by the spider, mom dies of a heart attack. This bizarre little episode apparently puts sweet little Susan over the top. Later as a teenager, Susan uses her pet tarantulas in acts of revenge against her terrified classmates, who have been tormenting her for way too long. And innocent looking Susan doesn't stop there, making good plot use of her father's mortuary and her creepy little playmates! A 70's drive-in classic!

Totally cheesy but..........2007-01-05
I liked it. Fun to watch what kind of tarntulas they used in the movie and all the misinformation about tarantulas being bandied about. Cheesy plot, bad acting; Elvira could have fun with this one.
The wrong eight-legged freak. Don't you dare see this........2006-02-28
From what I have heard, this very low-budget film is about as bad as the "Giant Spider Invasion" movie that nearly no one liked at all, so I will never ever spend any money on this worthless tarantula film under any circumstances. It might even be worse than you can imagine, especially if you're arachnophobic. For those of you spider lovers out there who want something from the same year, and whether you have kids or not, I would rather suggest seeing some episodes of "Water-spider Wonder-spider," a charming Hungarian cartoon. It's about the adventures of a cute purple spider that lives in a pond and shares his life with a cruciferous spider that can be both ruthless and childlike. Together, they share many adventures with water snails and insects. If you want to watch this cartoon and you live in the United States, you will need to copy and paste this address: http://www.hirado.hu/archivum.php?id=235
