  Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

    A top-notch fairy tale!.......2007-07-03

    I first saw this movie well over a decade ago. I thought it was OK, but could only remember a few snippets of it. A friend of mine @ work often talked about it and raved about what a fun movie it was. So, finally, I picked it up and gave it another look.
    
    What I found was that my friend was right: it IS a fun movie. These days, it is also very nostalgic as well (as most 1980s movies are for me). I have a greater appreciation of the love story as well. Now that I'm pushing 40, I have a fuller understanding of just how elusive the "fairy tale ending" really is.
    
    The cast is superb, featuring Cary Elwes as the dashing hero. He has the look and the physical grace to easily pull off the shy young farmhand who transforms into a confident, debonair swashbuckler. Robin Wright Penn is a natural to play the princess; beautiful, a wee bit on the high-maintenance side but with a heart-of-gold beneath it all.
    
    The DVD also includes a bit part by Billy Crystal. Although you'd never recognize him, all of his fans will instantly know him due to his distinctive high-pitched voice and the way he moves. We also get to see the late-great Andre the Giant. Although I've never been into pro wrestling, I'm well-aware of how beloved he was while he was alive. He was a gentle giant, and this film brings out his warm personality.
    
    This is a family-friendly fairy tale. There is mild violence, but it is more cartoon-like than anything else. There is a scene of torture, but it is so absurd as to not cause any children nightmares. If fairy-tale movies represent a genre that you enjoy, then this one is a must-have! Also, people who like this flick are also sure to enjoy SERENDIPITY with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. Let the fairy tales begin! Serendipity

    I saw "Princess Bride" in the theatres nearly 20 years ago and lines like that still stick with me. This film version of William Goldman's wonderful novel is one of the best fantasy films around and is a great stock film for families and fantasy lovers as well. We've viewed our copy at least once every 2-3 years since the film came out and doubt we'll really ever tire of it.

    The Princess Bride became one of my favorite movies when a friend showed it to me at his home.I use this movie as a feel better remedy after a bad day or just to feel good.I love the wry humour as well as the sheer sarcasm that drips from every castle rampart.I recommend this to anyone needing a break from reality.Carey Elwes is Gorgous as Is Robin Wright in her first movie role.Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and Valerie are brilliant as is the quiet gentleness of the late Andre the Giant as Fessizk and How could I Forget Mady Patinkin as Indigo Montoya "You Killed My father.Prepare to DIE!"

    This is a timeless classic! My husband introduced me to it and now I watch it when he's away. This is great family fun and a really cute movie!

    In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
    I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.
    
    The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.
    
    If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.
    
    The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
    "As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.
    
    Rated PG for comic violence.

    The playful 2004 television version of Once Upon a Mattress brings everything full circle for Carol Burnett, who played klutzy Princess Winnifred, would-be fiancee of royal mama's boy Prince Dauntless, in the original 1959 Broadway cast production of the musical (as well as 1964 and 1972 television adaptations).     Had the chance to be great, but missed it........2007-06-13

    Everything about the show had a lot of promise, but promises weren't kept. I feel the show had 3 fatal flaws wich ultimately ruined the chance to immortalize a wonderful, hilarious play.
    
    #1: The movie was directed by a choreographer. While the dancing is great, the life of the show comes from the comedy. I felt like the show was absolutetly stripped of the natural comedy in the origional script.
    
    #2: The movie was made 8-year-old-child friendly. A vast majority of the humor that derives from the origional script (which they completely hashed for their PG rating) was without ambiguation geared towards an adult audience.
    
    #3: The casting needed some serious help. Just by listening to the 1997 Broadway Revival Cast recording, you could tell what the Broadway show had that the movie didn't: Talent, and Emotion.
    
    All in all I'm a little sad that I devoured 14.50$ plus shipping on this movie. I couldn't find it to rent it anywhere, so now it will probably just sit and collect dust on my shelf. Like I say, it had the chance to be great, but missed it.

    Stars fall flat.......2007-05-13

    After seeing a middle school production of this (entertaining), I was looking forward to seeing the professional version. Too bad a black and white version of the 1950's stage production isn't available. Once Upon the Mattress has great lyrics and great stars, but this version falls flat as a pancake. It has no energy. I can't stand the trashy Vegas style costuming of the queen. The rest of the costuming is beautiful. Perhaps the beautiful set design is too similar to the costuming as it all seems to blend together. Nothing stands out. What should be a great comedic vehicle for great comedic actors turns out to be quite bland.

    I really loved Once Upon a Mattress. That's why I bought it in the first place. Carol Burnett was fantastic.

    Mattress Mistake.......2007-03-31

    Disappointed, disgusted, disparaged, and that was just within the first 15 minutes.
    Oh, and the first 15 minutes were probably the best 15 minutes of the movie! Productions meant for the stage don't always translate well to the screen, but that shouldn't have been the case with this show. It shouldn't have been! An excellent cast, yes, but that still didn't save this one. The most captivating character in the show SHOULD have been Princess Winifred, but in an attempt to not play it exactly like Carol Burnett had in the '60s, Tracey Ullman was often rather dull in the role. She was likable, but still dull. The choice of Carol Burnett as the Queen was poor because she's a show stealer, and obviously was going to detract from Princess Winifred. Zooey Deschanel as Lady Larken was charming, among other characters, but that still didn't save it for me.
    The worst thing about this production of Once Upon a Mattress was the filming of it. Way too many close ups. Made for T.V. musicals, in my opinion, look better if they are still represented more in the fashion of stage musicals--not so many close ups! 85% of this movie was a close up!
    And just in case you're wondering.... Parents, if you're looking to buy this one for your kiddies just because it's made by Disney--think again! It may be relatively subtle, BUT this movie musical is about sex.
    I can make only two positive comments about this production...
    
    1. Zooey Deschanel was great.
    
    2. Costumes and sets very colorful--beautiful!
    
    But, really... don't waste your money.

    For anyone who loves the original Broadway cast recording, this DVD version fails miserably in all departments. It is miscast, badly directed, and boringly choreographed. The role of the Princess needs a belter. That's the whole core of this musical. Ullman is not a belter and is also too old for the part. The supporting roles seemed to be scaled to her inadequacies, as we are also served a middle-aged, dull and pathetic Prince Dauntless. As for the young lovers, they were dull to begin with, so they come out fine. Curiously, Carol Burnett whose debut performance in the original shot her to stardom, is less than impressive as the Queen. While the part does invite some ripe overplaying, unlike the lady in the original Broadway cast who managed to bring a little subtle fun to the role, Ms Burnett has about as much subtlety as Godzilla and her overbearing presence actually unbalances this already weak production. As she chews up the scenery (which looks like styrofoam, anyway)and forcibly intrudes on scenes she wasn't meant to be in, one gets the unpleasant feeling that, despite relinquishing the starring role, Ms Burnett still has the urge to dominate. What is it with these hitherto wonderful funny ladies in later life? (Think Lucille Ball in "Mame"). All their innate skills appear to become subordinate to a manic ego. And believe me, I'm a Carol Burnett fan about everything she did until this! My two stars are for the delightful score, which even this lousy treatment doesn't quite diminish. Frankly, my advice is to skip it and if you're a fan or just curious, buy the original Broadway cast CD.

    A top-notch fairy tale!.......2007-07-03

    I first saw this movie well over a decade ago. I thought it was OK, but could only remember a few snippets of it. A friend of mine @ work often talked about it and raved about what a fun movie it was. So, finally, I picked it up and gave it another look.
    
    What I found was that my friend was right: it IS a fun movie. These days, it is also very nostalgic as well (as most 1980s movies are for me). I have a greater appreciation of the love story as well. Now that I'm pushing 40, I have a fuller understanding of just how elusive the "fairy tale ending" really is.
    
    The cast is superb, featuring Cary Elwes as the dashing hero. He has the look and the physical grace to easily pull off the shy young farmhand who transforms into a confident, debonair swashbuckler. Robin Wright Penn is a natural to play the princess; beautiful, a wee bit on the high-maintenance side but with a heart-of-gold beneath it all.
    
    The DVD also includes a bit part by Billy Crystal. Although you'd never recognize him, all of his fans will instantly know him due to his distinctive high-pitched voice and the way he moves. We also get to see the late-great Andre the Giant. Although I've never been into pro wrestling, I'm well-aware of how beloved he was while he was alive. He was a gentle giant, and this film brings out his warm personality.
    
    This is a family-friendly fairy tale. There is mild violence, but it is more cartoon-like than anything else. There is a scene of torture, but it is so absurd as to not cause any children nightmares. If fairy-tale movies represent a genre that you enjoy, then this one is a must-have! Also, people who like this flick are also sure to enjoy SERENDIPITY with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. Let the fairy tales begin! Serendipity

This film version of William Goldman's wonderful novel is one of the best fantasy films around and is a great stock film for families and fantasy lovers as well.     The Princess Bride became one of my favorite movies when a friend showed it to me at his home.I use this movie as a feel better remedy after a bad day or just to feel good.I love the wry humour as well as the sheer sarcasm that drips from every castle rampart.I recommend this to anyone needing a break from reality.Carey Elwes is Gorgous as Is Robin Wright in her first movie role.Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and Valerie are brilliant as is the quiet gentleness of the late Andre the Giant as Fessizk and How could I Forget Mady Patinkin as Indigo Montoya "You Killed My father.Prepare to DIE!"

    In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
    I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.
    
    The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.
    
    If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.
    
    The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
    "As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.
    
    Rated PG for comic violence.

    Every now and then, someone makes one of those rare movies that crosses the lines of romance, action, fantasy, fairy tale, and a story for all ages. And isn't annoying either. With snappy dialogue and lovable characters, "The Princess Bride" is a classic tale of high adventure, danger, true love, screaming eels, and Sicilians who talk too much. And yes, there's kissing.
    
    A bored little boy (Fred Savage) is sick in bed, is told a story by his quirky grandfather (Peter Falk). In it, young lovers Buttercup (Robin Wright) and Westley (Carey Elwes) are separated when Westley is apparently killed. A few years later, the heartbroken Buttercup is unwillingly affianced to the slimy Prince Humperdinck. As if that weren't enough, she's kidnapped by a trio of mercenaries.
    
    But things go wrong for the mercenaries -- a mysterious masked man is following them, and he defeats each of the mercenaries with his swordplay, strength and wits. He also knows quite a bit about Westley's fate -- and Buttercup soon finds that he IS Westley after all. But Buttercup is only a cog in Humperdinck's evil plot, and now it's up to Westley, gentle giant Fezzik (Andre) and vengeance-seeking Spaniard Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) to save her.
    
    If "Princess Bride" had been done in a halfway serious manner, it wouldn't have been even remotely interesting. It would have been just another kids' film. But with William Goldman's tongue-in-cheek script and entertaining characters (Miracle Max, anyone?), it becomes something a lot sweeter and funnier.
    
    Rob Reiner has a deft, wry touch that matches Goldman's story, and he does a superb job of keeping the grim moments lighter than they would have been otherwise ("We'll never make it through!" "Nonsense, you're only saying that because no one ever has"). With scenes like the torture machine, Miracle Max and Westley's three duels, Reiner keeps it deadpan rather than openly comic. But there are also scenes of touching romance and reconciliation, and some very good swordfights for Inigo.
    
    And the dialogue (penned by Goldman) is full of quotables -- lines like "Inconceivable!" "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die," "I'm not left-handed!" and "As you wish" are more or less immortalized. At the worst of times it's solid; at the middling times, it's memorably quirky; at the best of times, it's hilarious.
    
    Yes, the title is about Buttercup. But she's a pretty pallid character compared to Westley, Fezzik and Patinkan. Elwes always seems to be winking at both the characters and audience, while Andre is lovable as the sportsmanlike, superstrong giant, and Patinkan as the discouraged Spaniard searching for a six-fingered man. His clash with the casually evil Rugen is a wonderful action-packed climax.
    
    And Billy Crystal makes a brief but insanely good appearance as the Miracle Man, an embittered medieval healer with a very peeved wife (Carol Kane, who steals the scene with her shrieks of "Liar!").
    
    Crammed with adventure, true love, swordfights, pirates, casual villains, and a clergyman with a speech impediment, "The Princess Bride" is an adorable comic classic. A must-see.

    Romance and High adventure.......2006-05-28

    It is inconceivable how they could make such a good movie. This is one of those movies that the story is being told and periodically you are drawn back to the reader and listener to see what they think of the story. The reader is a grandfather played by Peter Falk and the grandson that is listening to the bedtime story is Fred Savage. Watch the expressions on Prince Humperdinck's (Chris Sarandon) face as he gets foiled again. Exceptional good story and actors. Lots of mush and unexpected trials.
    
    See Peter Falk again with Cyndi Lauper in "Vibes" (1988).

    The Princess Bride became one of my favorite movies when a friend showed it to me at his home.I use this movie as a feel better remedy after a bad day or just to feel good.I love the wry humour as well as the sheer sarcasm that drips from every castle rampart.I recommend this to anyone needing a break from reality.Carey Elwes is Gorgous as Is Robin Wright in her first movie role.Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and Valerie are brilliant as is the quiet gentleness of the late Andre the Giant as Fessizk and How could I Forget Mady Patinkin as Indigo Montoya "You Killed My father.Prepare to DIE!"

    This is a timeless classic! My husband introduced me to it and now I watch it when he's away. This is great family fun and a really cute movie!

    In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
    I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.
    
    The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.
    
    If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.
    
    The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
    "As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.
    
    Rated PG for comic violence.

    Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

    And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

    The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

    A top-notch fairy tale!.......2007-07-03

    I first saw this movie well over a decade ago. I thought it was OK, but could only remember a few snippets of it. A friend of mine @ work often talked about it and raved about what a fun movie it was. So, finally, I picked it up and gave it another look.
    
    What I found was that my friend was right: it IS a fun movie. These days, it is also very nostalgic as well (as most 1980s movies are for me). I have a greater appreciation of the love story as well. Now that I'm pushing 40, I have a fuller understanding of just how elusive the "fairy tale ending" really is.
    
    The cast is superb, featuring Cary Elwes as the dashing hero. He has the look and the physical grace to easily pull off the shy young farmhand who transforms into a confident, debonair swashbuckler. Robin Wright Penn is a natural to play the princess; beautiful, a wee bit on the high-maintenance side but with a heart-of-gold beneath it all.
    
    The DVD also includes a bit part by Billy Crystal. Although you'd never recognize him, all of his fans will instantly know him due to his distinctive high-pitched voice and the way he moves. We also get to see the late-great Andre the Giant. Although I've never been into pro wrestling, I'm well-aware of how beloved he was while he was alive. He was a gentle giant, and this film brings out his warm personality.
    
    This is a family-friendly fairy tale. There is mild violence, but it is more cartoon-like than anything else. There is a scene of torture, but it is so absurd as to not cause any children nightmares. If fairy-tale movies represent a genre that you enjoy, then this one is a must-have! Also, people who like this flick are also sure to enjoy SERENDIPITY with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. Let the fairy tales begin! Serendipity

    I saw "Princess Bride" in the theatres nearly 20 years ago and lines like that still stick with me. This film version of William Goldman's wonderful novel is one of the best fantasy films around and is a great stock film for families and fantasy lovers as well. We've viewed our copy at least once every 2-3 years since the film came out and doubt we'll really ever tire of it.
