Director Robert Aldrich had a knack for depicting outsiders with originality and authenticity. Much like The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard is a popular fable about integrity and group unity. It possesses a requisite toughness along with the loneliness that accompanies the outsider status. Compromise is never easy in an Aldrich film. There's always a bitter price to pay.
Burt Reynolds, in peak form, plays a former pro quarterback ostracized for shaving points. After beating up his girlfriend and resisting arrest, Reynolds winds up in prison, where he's taunted by warden Eddie Albert to help his semiprofessional team of guardsmen win a championship. Naturally, the inmates despise Reynolds, and naturally he redeems himself in one of the great movie football matches of all time. --Bill Desowitz
Description
In this rough-and tumble movie, actually filmed on-location at the Georgia State Prison, the cons are the heroes and the guards are the heavies. Eddie Albert is the sadistic warden who'll gladly make any sacrifice to push his guards' semi-pro football team to the national championship. Burt Reynolds plays one-time pro quarterback Paul Crewe, now behind bars for leading State Police on a wild chase in a "borrowed car" and more. He agrees to organize a prisoners' team to play the guards. The warden intercedes to assure that his goon squad will meet only passive resistance from Crewe's "Mean Machine." But the license to pound on their hated guards is a big incentive for murderers and thieves to learn strategy

Remake-- Mistake.......2007-05-23
I don't know if it's the cast I didn't like or what; but it just wasn't good enough for me. The movie wasn't dark enough in a setting sense. I think a night time game would have been more engrossing and I give the casting a grade of D.
The comedy angle was corny this time around as the new MEAN MACHINE does not jell as a likeable unit; as the original film did. Too many jerks in this movie, and I didn't buy Sandler as quarterback.
LONGEST YARD.......2007-05-03
Anyone can play football. This movie is about football. The people in this movie r in jail but not in real life. The guys in jail r going to play the gards in a game of football. The guys in jail get to practis on a dirt field kind of a desert looking sand field. Most of the fast people are black, which paule crew has to play one of them in a game of basketball. If paule crew loses he has to leave and if he wins deke and his crew have to join the team.
By far the best movie I've seen this year.......2007-04-29
Why this movie isn't 5 stars (overall) is beyond me. It's well worth the money to add it to your movie collection. There's never a dull moment and the action is great. If you like football, get this movie.

LIMP REMAKE WHATS THE POINT?.......2007-03-27
First off, I am an big Adam Sandler fan,but this movie is really lame. The original Film is a classic. How do you screw this up? When I first heard about this film I was ready for something funny like "The Water Boy" that movie was hilarious and I think Sandler should have taken a good look at it again before doing this one. This film is not even worth a look.

This a classic football movie. Forget the remake this is the real deal! The DVD has a great transfer and some cool extras.
Classic football movie.......2007-02-11
I had seen most of this movie on tv before, and I enjoyed the Adam Sandler Remake, so I though I should watch the original. Its a good comedy, humor and humility. Burt reynolds plays Paul Crew, the ex-pro player turned convict after stealing his girlfriends car and going on a wild chase. His arrest catches the eye of a warden at one of the state pens. He could use a consultant for his semi-pro guards football team. So in arrives Crew, and the warden reviels his plans for him. He doesn't play ball at first, but eventually reconsiders after some hard swamp labor. Instead of being a consultant, he offers an alternative plan, a warm up game, guards vrs prisoners...and the warden takes it. And the movie goes off from their. Decent humor, seems toned down as compared to todays movies, but on par with the era. One thing I noticed, their really is no soundtrack of music playing over the movie, and its amazing how much adding a song or melody can enhance the emotion or moments. Imagine Star wars without the imperial march. Thats what was missing from this movie. I like it, but the remake to have a little edge as far as a polished feel. Worth checking out.
Don't like prison movies but.......2007-01-09
This one was so funny and likible, I had to watch it. The warden ask him to though the game, everyone in the stands was there. It would be the game, he would be there forever.
Great movie!
The Biggest Game.......2006-12-19
'The Longest Yard' is a movie classic. It stands up to one of Burt Reynold's best performances involving a crucial football game where all the inmates are heroes and all the guards are the villains.
Paul Crew (Reynolds) is a retired pro football player. He spends his time with wealthy women who shower all the amenities he may want in post-season life. When he refuses to please his current girlfriend, he doesn't live up to her giggolo standards, so she isn't exactly accomodating when he wants to "borrow" her luxury sports car. She sends the police, for which he sends on a chase, while guzzling a drink in the driver's seat. Once apprehended, he must enter prison, for, above all things, assaulting two officers and resisting arrest. There, he meets the warden (Albert) who gives him an offer he can't refuse: To escape beatings and other maltreatment, he must assemble an inmate football team that will give the guard team a run for its money. The motives aren't clear at first, but Albert plays well his patronizing swindler role.
What makes 'The Longest Yard' so effective is the comraderie. We get big lugs who are just big babies and a team that has color and heart. Like 'Cool Hand Luke,' another classic, this prison film has us rooting for some pretty underhanded people, but the villainy of the status quo presented has us cheering for the bad guys. With some excellent plot development as well as fine football scenes, 'The Longest Yard' is still a winner.
Prison, Football, and Life........2006-09-17
THE LONGEST YARD is usually billed as a football comedy, but the movie is actually a drama filled with comic moments centered around a very unique football game. In 21st Century U.S.A., I think we've forgotten how tough and horrible prisons used to be. Prisoners back then didn't have the amenities and luxuries that most prisoners have nowadays. In the 1970s people didn't want to go to prison, especially those who had already been there. Remembering the historical setting, helps put the original THE LONGEST YARD into perspective.
Burt Reynolds stars in the film as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe a former NFL star quarterback who was banned from the game for life after he was caught shaving points. Crewe is not a high-quality individual and he would not have made a good role model. He's a very selfish person who views women solely as objects for his personal desires and to sponge money out of. After a drunken argument with his girlfriend, Crewe goes on a driving rampage where that ends with him assaulting a police officer and wrecking his girlfriend's car, a Mazardi. He's sentenced to prison where the warden (Eddie Albert) wants Crewe to coach his semi-pro guard football team and help them win the championship. But Crewe has never been one to keep in line and refuses, besides the guards were going to kill him if he took the job. Eventually Crewe is put in charge of putting together a group of inmates that are going to play the warden's team in an exhibition game. The warden's team is expected to slaughter the inmates Mean Machine, but for the inmates all they want to do is play a great game and maybe knock some of the guards around. As for Crewe, the game becomes a crisis of conscience for him: he's offered parole if he throws the game, but he's gotten to like his teammates and he knows how much it means to them.
The movie has a good plot and is well acted. Reynolds and Albert give fine performances and Bernadette Peters has a small role as a sizzling secretary that freely gives Crewe some favors.
As mentioned before, THE LONGEST YARD is often billed as a comedy, but it's not. It's a serious drama with comical elements laced throughout. People get beat up and even killed. Prison, like life, can be a really tough place. Yet, there's always hope because on the football field, everyone's an equal.

Adam Sandler is no Burt Reynolds, but his remake of The Longest Yard is amusing enough to stand on its own. Inheriting the role played by Reynolds played in the 1974 original, Sandler plays Paul Crewe, a scandalized former football star who violates his parole and winds up back in the slammer, where an ambitious, corrupt warden (James Cromwell) manipulates him into forming a convict football squad to compete with a team of bullying prison guards. But where the original (directed with characteristic ruggedness by Robert Aldrich) was a semi-comic study of inmate resistance against powerful oppressors, Sandler's version is a formulaic comedy about winning against the bad guys. That makes it a softer, less meaningful film, and Sandler (reuniting here with Peter Segal after Anger Management and 50 First Dates) lacks the depth to convey anything more than amiable redemption, resulting in a movie that's easily enjoyed and easily forgotten. A co-starring role for Chris Rock could have been electrifying; instead it's just OK, as is Reynolds as the prison team's old-pro coach. That leaves us with a few good laughs on the football field and from Cloris Leachman as the warden's elderly, oversexed secretary, good work from rapper Nelly in a supporting role, and the lovely sight of Courteney Cox (as Crewe's nagging girlfriend) in a dazzling low-cut dress. In unnecessary remakes like this, fringe benefits count for a lot. --Jeff Shannon

The Longest Yard.......2005-10-05
This is a Horrible movie. Do not see it. It may seem impossible to make a bad comedy with Chris Rock and Adam Sandler but believe me it is. This movie is almost as bad as Garfield, the movie.
wow .......2005-09-13
the movie was crunk i watched it at the movies and i bought it and watch it .. It was sooooooo great because NELLY was in it ,,.;..
Feels Like A Football Game.......2005-09-12
The Longest Yard tells the story of a former American Football player (Adam Sandler) who is sent to prison after a drink driving incident- don't worry no one is hurt, there's just a lot of heavy damage to several police cars. While there the Warden wants him to form a Football team among the inmates so they can challenge the prison guards in a (supposedly friendly) game. Of course, the inmates might want to inflict permanent damage rather than simply win. And trust me, these guys are tough. Slowly but surely, the former Football star assembles a team with help from Chris Rock and Burt Reynolds.
This film is a comedy with a whole lotta sporting violence. This is The Waterboy on steroids and the sound effects guys are having a field day. Though being a comedy, it is not Adam Sandler that gets the most jokes, rather his so-called team does. There are also some genuine surprises, one particularly big one towards the end of the film which you wouldn't expect from this genre which makes it quite shocking. Also watch out for the obligatory Rob Schneider cameo, which though fun, seems more unnatural here than in any other Adam Sandler movies.
The pacing of the movie generally holds up well, until it gets towards the end. That is where it begins to feel like a Football game. See, the thing I don't like about Football games is that the scoreboard could say there's 4 minutes left of the game, but with all the stoppages it could actually take 45 minutes. So Football games feel longwinded to me, kinda like the big football game in this movie. Still, the audience I saw The Longest Yard with loved it- those crazy violence-loving psychos!
adam sandler?.......2005-08-02
Why would you pick Adam Sandler to play a Burt Reynolds role? Since when has that made sense? oh well. Maybe they could have made this movie a little better by having an actual actor play the role of Crewe. Hmm...
Steve Zahn...
Owen Wilson?
a younger Bill Murray
Robin Williams?
I dont know. Maybe i'll think of someone better later. Anyways, if you want to see new good comedy, see Life Aquatic.
THE BEST.......2005-07-29

CLASSIC BURT REYNOLDS FILM FORGET THE REMAKE! .......2007-03-27
