Actually, this comedy is one of the more enjoyable films to examine midlife crisis in the 1980s. Written and directed by Alan Alda, it examines the effects of middle age on a group of married couples who are longtime friends. Each season they go away on a vacation together, but the dynamic gets skewed when one of the men dumps his wife for a younger woman. Though some may find the characters' self-satisfaction and upscale neuroses a shade cloying, they are more than matched by Alda's solid, often funny writing. The couple with the biggest laughs: the hilariously paired Jack Weston and Rita Moreno (although Alda and Carol Burnett also strike comic sparks). --Marshall Fine

After Star Wars and the successful big-screen Star Trek adventures, it's perhaps not so surprising that Gene Roddenberry managed to convince purse string-wielding studio heads in the 1980s that a Next Generation would be both possible and profitable. But the political climate had changed considerably since the 1960s, the Cold War had wound down, and we were now living in the Age of Greed. To be successful a second time, Star Trek had to change too.

A writer's guide was composed with which to sell and define where the Trek universe was in the 24th Century. The United Federation of Planets was a more appealing ideology to an America keen to see where the Reagan/Gorbachev faceoff was taking them. Starfleet's meritocratic philosophy had always embraced all races and species. Now Earth's utopian history, featuring the abolishment of poverty, was brandished prominently and proudly. The new Enterprise, NCC 1701-D, was no longer a ship of war but an exploration vessel carrying families. The ethical and ethnical flagship also carried a former enemy (the Klingon Worf, played by Michael Dorn), and its Chief Engineer (Geordi LaForge) was blind and black. From every politically correct viewpoint, Paramount executives thought the future looked just swell!

Roddenberry's feminism now contrasted a pilot episode featuring ship's Counsellor Troi (Marina Sirtis) in a mini-skirt with her ongoing inner strengths and also those of Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) and the short-lived Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby). The arrival of Whoopi Goldberg in season 2 as mystic barkeep Guinan is a great example of the good the original Trek did for racial groups--Goldberg has stated that she was inspired to become an actress in large part through seeing Nichelle Nichols' Uhura. Her credibility as an actress helped enormously alongside the strong central performances of Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard), Jonathan Frakes (First Officer Will Riker), and Brent Spiner (Data) in defining another wholly believable environment once again populated with well-defined characters. Star Trek, it turned out, did not depend for its success on any single group of actors.

Like its predecessor in the 1960s, TNG pioneered visual effects on TV, making it an increasingly jaw-dropping show to look at. And thanks also to the enduring success of the original show, phasers, tricorders, communicators and even phase inverters were already familiar to most viewers. But while technology was a useful tool in most crises, it now frequently seemed to be the cause of them too, as the show's writers continually warned about the dangers of over-reliance on technology (the Borg were the ultimate expression of this maxim). The word "technobabble" came to describe a weakness in many TNG scripts, which sacrificed the social and political allegories of the original and relied instead upon invented technological faults and their equally fictitious resolutions to provide drama within the Enterprise's self-contained society. (The holodeck's safety protocol override seemed to be next to the light switch given the number of times crew members were trapped within.) This emphasis on scientific jargon appealed strongly to an audience who were growing up for the first time in the late 1980s with the home computer--and gave rise to the clichéd image of the nerdy Trek fan.

Like in the original Trek, it was in the stories themselves that much of the show's success is to be found. That pesky Prime Directive kept moral dilemmas afloat ("Justice"/"Who Watches the Watchers?"/"First Contact"). More "what if" scenarios came out of time-travel episodes ("Cause and Effect"/"Time's Arrow"/"Yesterday's Enterprise"). And there were some episodes that touched on the political world, such as "The Arsenal of Freedom" questioning the supply of arms, "Chain of Command" decrying the torture of political prisoners and "The Defector", which was called "The Cuban Missile Crisis of The Neutral Zone" by its writer. The show ran for more than twice as many episodes as its progenitor and therefore had more time to explore wider ranging issues. But the choice of issues illustrates the change in the social climate that had occurred with the passing of a couple of decades. "Angel One" covered sexism; "The Outcast" was about homosexuality; "Symbiosis"--drug addiction; "The High Ground"--terrorism; "Ethics"--euthanasia; "Darmok"--language barriers; and "Journey's End"--displacement of Indians from their homeland. It would have been unthinkable for the original series to have tackled most of these.

TNG could so easily have been a failure, but it wasn't. It survived a writer's strike in its second year, the tragic death of Roddenberry just after Trek's 25th anniversary in 1991, and plenty of competition from would-be rival franchises. Yes, its maintenance of an optimistic future was appealing, but the strong stories and readily identifiable characters ensured the viewers' continuing loyalty. --Paul Tonks

3 out of 5 stars ST:TNG Good, but not the best anthology.......2007-06-27

I love the show very much and consider myself a Trek fan. It's nice to have the series on DVD, but the extra features are nill if any. Very sporadic, no real commentary or commentary that is particularly interesting. If you want your favorite episodes on DVD, you get it. The video quality is not particularly good, it's pretty average. I think it was a straight transfer from VHS, but I could be wrong. It would be nice to get director commentaries, but I don't think there are any. Slightly disappointing considering how much money I blew on the discs, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars AVOID DROP SHIPPERS!!!.......2007-06-09

Drop shippers are easily identified - If a seller lists EMS as a shipping meathod - They are a drop shipper - And you never know what you're going to receive or if you'll receive it at all - Because your order can get locked up in CUSTOMS for several weeks - And worse you may not be able to get a refund for the item. Always ask your seller if their product is being shipped with EMS. If so, don't buy - it's better to pay a little more and receive your product, rather than take a chance on not getting it at all.

    1 out of 5 stars Defective disk.......2007-05-17

My wife is a big fan of Patrick Stewart and of ST:TNG. I got the set for her birthday. When we watched the first disk, it froze near the end of the pilot episode. Amazon said to return all 50 odd disks, not just the defective one. I did so and received a replacement. When we attempted to watch the end of the pilot episode, we got a little farther before the disk froze again. We watch about 10 DVDs a week and have had no other problems with our DVD player. It makes me wonder about the quality control on the copying of this set. I returned the entire set and requested a refund. It has now been 6 weeks and still no refund. When I requested the replacement disk, I was advised that the warranty lasts only 30 days. That is not enough time to verify that 50 disks (approximately 150 hours of video) are good.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Step in the Star Trek Anthology and a Historic Event in Television. .......2007-04-22

The Star Trek Collection is a worthy hobby and certainly the largest of the television series DVD Collections (The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise). At around 1100 minutes per box (a few hours less than the TOS seasons) we are still looking at approx 30 boxes with 700 hours of viewing. That is 1 month of non-stop Star Trek. No DVD series comes remotely close to that. Get going collecting right now and build up on each succession over the years. By the end you will have a very serious anthology that defines the word awe. This is the kind of item that requires 1 hour a day of your time for the next few years. It is a cherished memory that served your fathers and will serve your children also. Our very planet, Earth, has advanced because of Gene Roddenberry's admirable concept. Roddenberry nailed the premise of the series when he said that he wanted to create a show with characters that we could look up too. `The Bridge' members are like our family. Watch what they do. Then go and spend your life striving for the same on Earth. What engineer, medic, scientist, teacher, worker can not say that Star Trek has not influenced them? The show is this significant in the development of our species. Even Christians respect and quote its authority and it is not hard to see why. The DVD case is not quite as fancy as the TOS (The Original Series) cases. The TNG case is supposed to resemble a TNG crew briefcase. The case opens to reveal the disc booklet inside a sleeve. Sliding the disc booklet out of the sleeve and flipping it open reveals a spread of 7 discs. There are 4 episodes per disc. However the last disc, disc 7, only has two episodes, for a grand total of 26 episodes (TOS has 8 Discs, 30 episodes). The rest of disc 7 is devoted to Star Trek interviews and trailers with the usual expected extras...and then some more. The episodes are ordered not in the sequence they where filmed, but in the sequence that they aired, however each episode has been numbered according to the order they where filmed in. This means on one disc you have shows 4, 2, 12 and 1, in that order. The sound has also been remastered to 5:1 Dolby Digital! Since the show was shot in full frame, these dimensions are retained.

Star Trek, The Next Generation (TNG), Season One, had an amazing impact when it was first broadcast. An instant hit and a milestone in television serials (it ran for 7 seasons unlike its predecessor that ran for 3), its characters and new look Enterprise had us glued to the TV with the first computer generated images of our solar system as Captain Picard utters the immortal words... `To baldly'... I mean... `To boldly go where no man'... I mean... `To boldly go where no one has gone before.' Viewing the episodes in the order they where filmed does not show a vision in the shaping as per the TOS series but is more of the same again (even remaking some TOS episodes), this time with more characters, more action and more special effects.

    SEASON 1
All of the main characters in the TNG series are in episode one, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker, Lieutenant/Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, Lieutenant Tasha Yar, Lieutenant Worf, Commander Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lt. Commander/Commander Deanna Troi, Lt. Commander Data and Ensign Wesley Crusher. Only Natasha Yar quits before the first season is finished. Commander Dr. Beverly Crusher is replaced by Doctor Katherine Pulaski for Season two. Ensign Wesley Crusher is only sometimes reoccurring after Season four. The Enterprise itself is beautifully rendered with additional areas such as the holodeck allowing for almost any environment at the users choosing, playing an important function in many episodes. The use of computer generated images (a ground-breaking television experience back in 1987!) allowed for inspirational subspace sequences, planets, backdrops, an improved bridge main viewer and windows! Advances in makeup effects brought new alien characters to life and allowed an actor to appear as if he where indeed an android. TNG Season One attempts to relate with TOS by reviving similar stories while at the same time adding on additional insights into new and fascinating sci-fi theory while retaining most of the character arcs that made TOS so interesting. The stories (also written by TOS's DC Fontana) are as fresh today as they where in the late 80s, early 90s, when TNG first aired. Season One of TNG is mostly about deities, infections, alien cultures, galactic politics, time travel, alien forces, mind control, family matters, computer malfunctions and Starfleet Academy. There are also the unforgettable episodes `Encounter at Farpoint' which introduces us to the crew of the Enterprise and the mysterious Q, `Where No One has Gone Before' a wonderful story about travelling the cosmos, `Datalore' which features two Data characters, `Heart of Glory' with some in-depth revelations about Klingons , `Skin of Evil' featuring some remarkable effects for its time with a very sad ending, and the classic `Conspiracy' (this episode is uncut, which features some violent scenes involving a head explosion edited from some daytime television showings [so parents be cautious]) about an invasion of the body snatchers type takeover of Starfleet. The bottom line for TNG: Season One is that it will bring back some enormously delightful memories for those who where awe inspired by it when it first came out. Although we can debate about which is the better series, TNG or TOS, we still absolutely adore both. We might miss Kirk rolling about the desert scrub with a seven foot man in a rubber reptile costume, but hearing Picard saying `make it so' just makes our day.

    SEASON 2
Season Two, still carries on with repeating much of the stories in TOS, revamping them and then adding some new stuff of its own, boosting Data's screen time, bumping up the computer generated graphics to allow for things like shuttlecraft launching and manoeuvres, improved alien CGI and an enhancement in particle effects. They even attempt a type of morphing. Most of the main characters from Season One are here, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker (now with a beard), Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Lieutenant Commander Worf (letting his hair grow), Commander Deanna Troi (complete with low-cut red starfleet costume), Lt. Commander Data and Ensign Wesley Crusher. However obviously Commander Lieutenant Tasha Yar is gone but so is Dr. Beverly Crusher (who was not bad-looking), replaced by Doctor Katherine Pulaski (who looks like your granny!) for Season Two because Dr. Crusher has been reassigned to Starfleet Medical as explained in episode one of Season Three (in reality the TNG writers where having difficulties in developing Crusher's character, would later reinstate her for Season Three, dropping Pulaski because they felt her character was not working). Colm Meaney as Miles Edward O'Brien, Navigation from Season One gets more screentime, while the new Whoopi Goldberg chatacter, Guinan, is the wise El Aurian bartender in 10 Forward, the new bar room where the Enterprise crew get to relax. Except for this extra area the Enterprise itself has not gone undergone much of a revamp and this season is far more Enterprise based than Season One, or all of TOS, meaning Season Two has less planetary exploration stories which is a bit of a drawback, but sets a new standards in the `hotel in space' feel that would produce the `Deep Space Nine' series. Season Two of TNG is mostly about alien impregnation, mystery space, AI, the holodeck, interplanetary relations, rapid aging, justice, shape-shifting, time travel, family, the prime directive, kidnapping, cloning, war games and infections. The big plus side to not having that much planetary exploration is that there are lots of stories with Klingons and the first encounter with the BORG! The unforgettable episodes are, `Elementary, Dear Data' where Data takes on his Sherlock Holmes persona and we are introduced to the Moriarty character. `Loud as a Whisper' is about a deaf and dumb peace negotiator. `A Matter of Honor' is where Riker serves on a Klingon battleship. `Q Who?' may well be the best episode here because it is the first time we meet the Borg. The last episode of Season Two `Shades of Gray' may be one of the worst Star Trek episodes ever, which uses Riker's memories from Seasons One and Two to make up an entire episode and even includes the uncut scenes for the Season One episode `Conspiracy' featuring the violent head explosion edited from some daytime television showings [so parents be cautious again]). The bottom line for TNG: Season Two is that for all it shortcomings because of lack of beaming down, we get the Borg and lots and lots of Klingons. At this stage in the saga we might still miss Kirk rolling about the desert scrub with a seven foot man in a rubber reptile costume, but how will Picard defeat those assimilating half-man, half-machine entities that are heading his way? He better "make it so" with Season Three.

    SEASON 3
It was the dawn of the 90s and since CGI had undergone some development, the improvements can be seen not only in the new opening sequence, but with better looking planets (complete with moving gaseous atmospheres) and major enhancements in particle effects. Towards the end it undergoes new model development, lighting and subspace effects of a movie budget look. The crew uniform has changed with a new type of collar. Most of the main characters from Season Two are here, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker (now with a bigger belly), Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Lieutenant Commander Worf (letting his hair grow even more), Commander Deanna Troi (with more makeup, costume changes and even an aerobics outfit [that really isn't as good as it sounds]), Lieutenant Commander Data and Ensign Wesley Crusher (new hairdo). Dr. Beverly Crusher is back (initially with a terrible hairdo that gets better) and Doctor Katherine Pulaski has been dropped from the show never to reappear again. Pulaski's disappearance is not officially explained (in reality Diana Muldaur was told her character was not working and she was offered a role in L.A. Law instead. McFadden was asked to rejoin the series again) the crew do act like she has just left because her time was up with Dr. Crusher making reference to Pulaski's work in Episode four. Commander Lieutenant Tasha Yar makes a surprise guest appearance for one episode! Dwight Schultz (Murdoch from the A-Team) makes his first appearance as Lieutenant `Reg' Barkley, who would have a reoccurring role. Colm Meaney is here again as Miles Edward O'Brien, Navigation, doesn't have much of a role boost since Season Two, while the Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan character of the wise El Aurian, the bartender in 10 Forward, has her background further developed. Season Three of TNG is mostly about nanotechnology, colonization, super aliens, the prime directive, orphans, ancient space booby traps, Romulans, wormholes, peace negotiations, defectors, super humans, terrorism, Q, court inquisitions, parallel universes, AI, Klingon high councils, captivity experiments, time travellers, biological space crafts, morale, the first law of robotics, Vulcans, Sarek, evolutionary speciation, and the Borg. Unlike Season Two there is much more planetary exploration and lots of alien encounters. There are loads of unforgettable episodes in this Season, "Evolution" where nanotechnology takes over the Enterprise, "The Survivors" is a mystery about a single household that is the only structure to survive an alien invasion on a whole planet, "Who Watches The Watchers?" is about the prime directive failing when the Enterprise team are spotted and kidnapped, "Offspring" sees Data creating another sentient android, "Sins of the Father" has Worf return to his Klingon homeworld to defend his family honour, "Hollow Pursuits" has Lt. Barkley fantasizing about crew members in the Holodeck, "Sarek" is about the Vulcan of the same name from Star Trek: The Original Series, who is back for what looks like his final peace negotiation, and of course the pot-boiler end episode of "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" (widely acclaimed as one of the best Star Trek episodes ever!) marks the grand entrance of Locutus of Borg onto the scene. The bottom line for TNG: Season Three is that it is often cited by fans as the best TNG Season and is probably the first of the Seasons to really be worth the price tag demanded of these very expensive box sets. In Season Three everyone seems to have matured, included the writers who are giving us exactly what we want and the series has a serious enough budget to make every episode look like a movie, especially towards the end. There is lots in this season to enjoy and of course not since J.R. Ewing had been shot did we get the kind of cliff-hanger episode that "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" would deliver on, meaning every Trekie (and who wasn't at this time) across the planet from LA to Hong Kong had to wait all summer to learn how Picard could be saved. There is no time to loose!!! Onto Season Four. .... wooosshhhh.

    SEASON 4
Not since J.R. Ewing had been shot did we get the kind of cliff-hanger episode that "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" would deliver on at the end of Season III, meaning every Trekie (and who wasn't at this time) across the planet from LA to Hong Kong had to wait all summer to learn how Picard could be saved. There was no time to lose!!! Onto Season Four. .... wooosshhhh... so here we are. With Season Three it was the dawn of the 90s and CGI had undergone some development and improvements (better looking planets with moving gaseous atmospheres, particle effects, lighting and subspace effects). With Season Three things started to have more of a movie budget look. Season Four tries to maintain that class. Most of the main characters from Season Two are here, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Lieutenant Commander Worf (who keeps growing that hair), Commander Deanna Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data, Dr. Beverly Crusher and Ensign Wesley Crusher (now a Starfleet officer with full uniform, also departs from TNG half way through this Season, and has a recurring role instead of a main character in the remaining three seasons). Colm Meaney is here again as Miles Edward O'Brien and Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan. Lots of characters who had small episode roles are back for Season Four such as Worf's lover K'Ehleyr, the Traveller, K'Mpec the Klingon leader, Duras whose dishonesty caused Worf's discommendation and the Romulan Tomalak. There is also a surprise character at the end of this season. Season Four of TNG is mostly about the Borg, family, Dr. Soong and the AI emotion chip, adoption, the space-time continuum, hostage rescue, the Klingon High Council, Romulans, alternative universes, holographic projection, survival, loosing special abilities, renegade captains, the devil, amnesia, first contact, love, nightmares, mutations, super intelligence, Robin Hood, witch hunt trials, euthanasia, host life forms, mind control and honour. Like Season Three most the episodes in Season Four have great stories, combining both planetary exploration and the life of the crew instead of dealing with either one or the other as the initial seasons did. It is a well balanced season overall and a good deal more exciting than maybe its three previous seasons now that things are firmly established. Apart from containing Part II of `The Best of Both Worlds', the introduction of the Cardassians, who would become major players in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine franchise, makes it even more valuable. There are loads of unforgettable episodes in this Season, `The Best of Both Worlds, Part II' concludes the cliff-hanger from Season Three with some great battle special effects, `Family' has Picard going home to see his brother and family, `Brothers' features Dr. Soong who is Data's creator, `Reunion' returns to the story of Worf and his Klingon dishonour, `The Wounded' features the Cardassians for the first time, `Clues' has Data disobeying Picard, `First Contact' sees Riker exposed as an alien on a planet he is monitoring, the `The Nth Degree' has Barclay taking control of the Enterprise with his new special powers of intelligence, `QPid' for its historical recreation of Robin Hood and of course `Redemption, Part I' which deals with Worf's dishonour. The bottom line for TNG: Season Four is that it keeps up the pace of Season Three, and is worth the price tag demanded of these very expensive box sets. Everyone has matured and the writers are giving us exactly what we want. Although not quite the cliff-hanger end episode that "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" was, `Redemption, Part I' still concerns the loss of a main character to the other side and introduces the surprise return of a person we know. We are left asking ourselves, if the `hard man' is really gone and why does `she' look like a Romulian! As Picard would say "I can live with a mystery" but we just can't! Onto Season Five as quick as we can...

    SEASON 5
Season 5 has a remarkable improvement in visual effects. The display panels on the enterprise are more interactive. The camera can now pan as special effects take place. Deep space battles seem more intense. We also get a new Star Trek title graphic in the opening sequence. The cliff-hanger conclusion of "Redemption, Part II" is a great episode although slightly lacking in the promise of a civil war battle between Klingons, Romulans and the Federation, turns out to be more of a character episode than the big epic battler we thought we would get. None-the-less, it is still a good episode that reveals some things about the family of Tasha Yar. Most of the main characters from Season Two are here, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (with a new red suede coat and grey uniform), Commander William T. Riker, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge (who sports a new beard in one episode), Lieutenant Commander Worf (who left the Enterprise in Season Four), Commander Deanna Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data and Dr. Beverly Crusher. Ensign Wesley Crusher (who departed from Season Four half way and has a recurring role instead of a main character in the remaining three seasons) returns for some episodes but is mainly replaced by the new Ensign Ro Laren, a Bajoran. Colm Meaney is here again as Miles Edward O'Brien as is Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan. Alexander Rozhenko as Worf's son now has a reoccurring role since Season Four. Keiko O'Brien, (Miles O'Brien's wife) is firmly established as a reoccurring character. Watch out for the special appearances of Ashley Judd as Ensign Robin Lefler and Leonard Nimoy as Spock! Whoot! Whoot! Strangely enough this is the only season where Q, of the omnipotent Q Continuum, does not make an appearance. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, engineer is also absent from this Season. Season Four of TNG is mostly about the Klingon High Council, Romulans, communication, Bajora, crystalline entities, disasters, addiction, reunification, time travel, parenting, telekinesis, eugenics, amnesia, possession, euthanasia, sexual repression, time warps, children, cover-ups, sexual attraction, imaginary friends, Borg, invisibility, alternative lives and phase shifting. Like Season Four most the episodes in Season Five have great stories, a perfect balance of planetary exploration and the life of the crew. It much more of the same as in Season Four with the better episodes being `Redemption, Part II', `Darmok' an interesting episode about language, the introduction of the Bajora and Ensign Ro, the Silicon Avatar makes a return, `Unification', Part I and II (both here) with Spock may be one of the most popular double episodes in the whole TNG franchise, certainly more popular than `Time's Arrow', Part I which ends this season with the possibility of something strange happening to Data on Earth. `The Masterpiece Society' shows what happens when a special genetically engineered race has contact from the outside world. Huge of Borg also makes his first appearance in `I, Borg'. Apart from the `Unification' double episode, the instalments `Ethics', about Worf undergoing a major controversial surgical operation and `The Game', when entertainment becomes mind control, have both achieved cult status as some of the best TNG episodes ever aired. Season Five unfortunately has some dull episodes too, many of which occur in the second half of the season, so the best stuff is within the first four discs. It doesn't really create much drive to push for a quick follow up with Season Six, but no doubt because Six is as good as Five was, then we are there for it. As a note: "Redemption part II" - this episode received as 12 age rating in the UK, because it contains Klingon ritual head butting. `Violations' also has sexually violent content (psychic rape). Parents may want to be cautious and view those two episodes before showing it to children. If you are going to move onto Season Six then you will probably want to know that during Season Six the crew make contact with Deep Space Nine. So if you get Deep Space Nice: Season One you can sync up the star dates and watch both franchises in chronological order. If you are in for Six you may also be in for Season One of DS9!

    SEASON 6
Season 6 is generally considered the pinnacle of the series for the wind down to the Season 7 conclusion and of course the wake of popularity that Star Trek, Deep Space Nine: Season 1 whipped up while Season 6 was running. 1993 was TV Sci-Fi heaven with fans getting a double dose of ST for the year. This means for the folks who have been watching TOS and TNG, now is the time to do a special chronological order of star dates alternating between TNG Season 6 and DS9 Season 1. You can find the order if you search the new for it. TNG has really good stories while DS9 gets the effects. We are no longer happy to see a new interactive flat panel as the driving force of a story. Season 6 answers with substance to characters and stories with some surprises (Picard acting like a Russian is hysterical. Would you sacrifice his authority role for that quality humour from him from time to time? Maybe yes!). The conclusion of "Time's Arrow" is not the best cliff-hanger but sufficient. Most of the main characters from Season Two are here, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Lieutenant Commander Worf, Commander Deanna Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data and Dr. Beverly Crusher. Ensign Wesley Crusher (who departed from Season Four half way and has a recurring role instead of a main character in the remaining seasons) returns for some episodes but is mainly replaced by the new Ensign Ro Laren, a Bajoran. Colm Meaney is here again as Miles Edward O'Brien but will be transferred to DS9 (his absence is not mentioned). Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan is back along with Alexander Rozhenko. Keiko O'Brien, (Miles O'Brien's wife) will also leave for DS9. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, engineer is back after being absent from Season 5. Season 6 of TNG is mostly about transporter psychosis, empaths, Scotty!, alien abductions, Q, age regression, android dreams, artificial life, Cardassians, Prof. Moriarty, love, Romulan defection, destiny, Klingon birthrights, thieves, command ethics, origins of life, insanity, murder, faith, doubles, time travel and the Borg. Like Season 5 most the episodes in Season 6 have above average sci-fi stories, combing planetary exploration and the life of the crew. Memorable episodes include, A Fistful of Datas, The Quality of Life, Ship in a Bottle, Face of the Enemy, Birthright and lessons. There are three very good episodes which really make the season worth. Tapestry sees Picard given the opportunity to relive his youth without the night he fought with a gang who stabbed him through the heart. Suspicion is a great whodunit episode (of which there are a few) with one of the coolest Star Trek aliens ever (should have made him a main character). Descent Part I is a very nice slight of hand trick. You will keep thinking Hugh right up until the last second.

    SEASON 7
Star Trek: Season 7 is of course winding down to a conclusion, making way for some Star Trek films, but in reality it is Deep Space Nine: Season 2 (DS9: Season 1 starts in star date chronological order with TNG: Season 6) that is the new trek. Fans of Star Trek got their twofold measure of these series through 1993 and 1994 making it an exceptional SF TV era. The conclusion of "Descent, Part II" has the finale of Lore. Ensign Wesley Crusher (who departed from Season Four half way and has a recurring role instead of a main character in the remaining seasons) returns for one episode. While Ensign Ro Laren, a Bajoran, was supposed to replace him, she only appears in one episode in Season 7, although the episode is a major one focused on her. Colm Meaney shows up again as Miles Edward O'Brien for the last episode. Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan is gone without explanation (see the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis" on her). Alexander Rozhenko is back. Keiko O'Brien, (Miles O'Brien's wife) is not here either (after leaving for DS9). Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, engineer, is back again. Season 6 of TNG is mostly about Lore, emotional studies, interfaces, mercenaries, nightmares, psychic trauma, Beverly and Picard, warp travel environmental damage, data's mother, alternate realities, the Pegasus, Worf's human brother, incubus, top secret missions, radiation sickness, deities, Troi and Worf, reverse evolution, Wesley and the Traveller, Klingon right of ascension, Picard's son, abiogenesis, Ro Laren and time travel. While there are some hit and miss episodes and a really terrible one ("Masks" for example is one of the worst of the entire franchise) most are well above average and some are incredible. Memorable episodes include, Gambit, Forces of Nature, Inheritance, Lower Decks, Thine Own Self, Journey's end and Bloodlines. The Pegasus is probably the best episode of the Season, but the finale "All good things..." is really where it is at with some good aging effects, a possible future with an older looking cast and an futuristic Enterprise to die for. The series ends very warmly and with a nicer note about the possibilities of looking within instead of charting stars and galaxies for a newer greater trek. In short there is nothing like ST:TNG. It evolved TV serials into mega media and ran for a full span of 7 years. It set a new benchmark and placed the bar as high as the stars. All we can say about this awe-inspiring series can be summed up in one word...

    ...AMEN.

When I was young, the Star Trek, Next Generation episdes were on TV. I recorded them each week for my father who was out of town, due to work. I grew up with Star Trek as my model of proper behavior, and it provided a bridge that I was able to use to communicate with adults even though I was just a teenager. I bought the DVD set to be able to share that experience with my children. They love Star Trek as much as I do, and for the same reasons. It is wonderful to have every episode on DVD, as the tapes I made didn't last as long as the 20 years my memory has.

4 out of 5 stars Is it an Asian import?.......2007-07-01

    Caveat emptor / buyer beware!

This is just a note to people considering buying "Star Trek: Enterprise The Complete Seasons 1-4" on DVD from certain Amazon sellers.

If you see the Star Trek: Enterprise DVD collection in a single box rather than in four separate boxes (one box per season), it's likely an Asian import edition rather than from the studio.

Especially beware the appellation "the Chosen Collection" which was copied from the complete collector's edition of Joss Whedon's TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Buffy "Chosen Collection" is official while the Star Trek: Enterprise "Chosen Collection" is not.

Furthermore, if the DVD set mentions it's region free, then it almost certainly is an Asian import, because the studio does not have a region free version of Star Trek: Enterprise on DVD (at the time of this review).

It's true the Asian import edition will be considerably cheaper, and as I mentioned region free, but there are drawbacks as well. For example, the audio and video quality suffers relative to the regular edition. Also, if there's a scratch or other slight defect on one of the DVDs, most of the sellers won't refund the buyer's money or replace the DVD(s). Some might, but it could be tricky (and perhaps despite their claims to the contrary). Not to mention that purchasing an Asian import means the money goes to the Asian distributor and its affiliates rather than to, say, the cast or crew or anyone else on the actual production team -- which in turn could presumably be funneled into bringing back Star Trek (although it's debatable).

And please make sure to read Oren D. Applequist's helpful comment below regarding World Express Mail Service (EMS).

Anyway, obviously people are free to do what they like, but I'm mentioning all this so buyers can at least be aware of the risks.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-06-11

I loved the series. I only wish they had made more after season 4. I thought the crew worked well together personality wise and the story lines were great. I especially liked the relationship between Trip and T'pol. It's about time they allowed a romance between crew members. Does anyone know if their planning to make series 5?

5 out of 5 stars AVOID DROP SHIPPERS!!!.......2007-06-09

Drop shippers are easily identified - If a seller lists EMS as a shipping meathod - They are a drop shipper - And you never know what you're going to receive or if you'll receive it at all - Because your order can get locked up in CUSTOMS for several weeks - And worse you may not be able to get a refund for the item. Always ask your seller if their product is being shipped with EMS. If so, don't buy - it's better to pay a little more and receive your product, rather than take a chance on not getting it at all.

5 out of 5 stars Life Before James T. Kirk..........2007-05-26

Of all the ST series, I'd rank this as one of the best. While the original ST (a/k/a the Kirk and Spock show) was groundbreaking in many ways, it was more "sociological" SF without enough science to satisfy techno-SF nerds like me (I'm a computer jock by trade, and old enough to have seen the original series when it was shown for the first time). I thought STNG was better, liked STDS9 best of all, and never really got much into ST Voyager... but THIS series is great. In ST Enterprise, there's no great all-encompassing Federation (at least not yet), and we Earth people are still looked upon as a bunch of neobarbs who somehow managed to stumble into space.

The series draws on the lore of four other series and a whole string of movies, but it also goes into a lot of little nooks and crannies that haven't been explored yet. Did you know, for example that humans smell bad to Vulcan? But of course, Vulcans discipline themselves to ignore such things -- and also use a chemical agent to block the smell if they have to be in the presence of humans for very long.

Oh, yeah... lots of tasty little details here that will titillate the True Trekkie. And of course, it answers the BIG question: was there really life before James T. Kirk?

I've gotten through the first couple of seasons so far, and my only regret is that the series didn't last more than four. Of course, I could be wrong and it could fumble and stumble in the third and fourth years... but I think that in the first couple seasons alone, I got my money's worth.

Besides... T'Pal has GOT to be the best-looking Vulcan you're ever going to see...

The Sopranos, writer-producer-director David Chase's extraordinary television series, is nominally an urban gangster drama, but its true impact strikes closer to home, chronicling a dysfunctional, suburban American family in bold relief. And for protagonist Tony Soprano, there's the added complexity posed by heading twin families, his collegial mob clan and his own, nouveau riche brood. The series' brilliant first season is built around what Tony learns when, whipsawed between those two worlds, he finds himself plunged into depression and seeks psychotherapy--a gesture at odds with his midlevel capo's machismo, yet instantly recognizable as a modern emotional test. With analysis built into the very spine of the show's elaborate episodic structure, creator Chase and his formidable corps of directors, writers, and actors weave an unpredictable series of parallel and intersecting plot arcs that twist from tragedy to farce to social realism. While creating for a smaller screen, they enjoy a far larger canvas than a single movie would afford, and the results, like the very best episodic television, attain a richness and scope far closer to a novel than movies normally get.

Alternately seductive, exasperated, fearful, and murderous, James Gandolfini's Tony is utterly convincing even when executing brutal shifts between domestic comedy and dramatic violence. The first season's other life force is Livia Soprano, Tony's monstrous, meddlesome mother. As Livia, the late Nancy Marchand eclipses her long career of patrician performances to create an indelibly earthy, calculating matriarch who shakes up both families; Livia also serves as foil and rival to Tony's loyal, usually level-headed wife, Carmela (Edie Falco). Lorraine Bracco makes Tony's therapist, Dr. Melfi, a convincing confidante, by turns "professional," perceptive, and sexy; the duo's therapeutic relationship is also depicted with uncommon accuracy. Such grace notes only enrich what's not merely an aesthetic high point for commercial television, but an absorbing film masterwork that deepens with subsequent screenings.

In its second season, The Sopranos repeatedly defies formula to let the narrative turn as a direct consequence of the characters' behavior, letting everyone in this rogue's gallery of Mafiosi, friends, and family evolve and deepen. That gamble is most apparent in the rupture of the relationship that formed the spine of the first season, the tangled ties between Tony and Livia, whose betrayal makes Tony's estrangement a logical response. Filling that vacuum, however, is prodigal sister Janice (Aida Turturro), whose New Age flakiness never successfully conceals her underlying calculation and opportunism. Soprano's relationship with therapist Melfi also frays during early episodes, as she struggles with escalating doubts about her mobbed-up patient. At home, Tony contends with wife Carmela's ruthless ambitions on behalf of college-bound Meadow (Jamie Lynn Sigler), as well as son Anthony Jr.'s (Robert Iler) sullen adolescent flirtation with existentialism--the sort of touch that the show handles with a smart mix of sympathy and amusement.

In the brutal and controversial third season, The Sopranos justified its 11-month hiatus with some of its best, and most hotly debated, episodes. It continued to upend convention and defy audience expectations with a deliberately paced, calm-before-the-storm season opener that revolves around the FBI's attempts to bug the Soprano household, and a season finale that (for some) frustratingly leaves several plot lines unresolved. "Employee of the Month," in which Dr. Melfi is raped and considers whether to exact revenge by telling Tony of her attack, earned Emmys for its writers, and is perhaps Emmy nominee Lorraine Bracco's finest hour. Other story arcs concern the rise of the seriously unstable Ralph Cifaretto (Joe Pantoliano) and Tony's affair with "full-blown loop-de-loo" Gloria (Emmy nominee Annabella Sciorra). Plus, there is Tony's estrangement from daughter Meadow, his wayward delinquent son Anthony, Jr., Carmela's crisis of conscience, bad seed Jackie Jr., and the FBI--which, as the season ends, assigns an undercover agent to befriend an unwitting figure in the Soprano family's orbit.

Though for some the widely debated fourth season contained too much yakking instead of whacking, and an emphasis on domestic family over business Family, in most respects The Sopranos remains television's gold standard. The season garnered 13 Emmy nominations, and subsequent best actor and actress wins for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco as Tony and Carmela, whose estrangement provides the season with its most powerful drama, as well as a win for Joe Pantoliano's psychopath Ralph. Other narrative threads include Christopher's (Emmy nominee Michael Imperioli) descent into heroin addiction, Uncle Junior's (Dominic Chianese) trial, an unrequited and potentially fatal attraction between Carmela and Tony's driver Furio, and a rude joke about Johnny Sack's wife that has potentially fatal implications. Other indelible moments include Christopher's girlfriend Adriana's projectile reaction to discovering that her new best friend is an undercover FBI agent in the episode "No Show," Janice giving Ralph a shove out of their relationship in "Christopher," and the classic "Quasimodo/Nostradamus" exchange in the season-opener, which garnered HBO's highest ratings to date. Freed from the understandably high expectations for the fourth season, heightened by the 16-month hiatus, these episodes can be better appreciated on their own considerable merits. They are pivotal chapters in television's most novel saga.

From the moment a wayward bear lumbers into the Sopranos' yard in the fifth-season opener, it is clear that The Sopranos is in anything but a "stagmire." The series benefits from an infusion of new blood, the so-called "Class of 2004," imprisoned "family" members freshly released from jail. Most notable among these is Tony's cousin, Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi, who directed the pivotal season 3 episode "Pine Barrens"), who initially wants to go straight, but proves himself to be something of a "free agent," setting up a climactic stand-off between Tony and New York boss Johnny Sack. These 13 mostly riveting episodes unfold with a page-turning intensity with many rich subplots. Estranged couple Tony and Carmella (the incomparable James Gandolfini and Edie Falco) work toward a reconciliation (greased by Tony's purchase of a $600,000 piece of property for Carmela to develop). The Feds lean harder on an increasingly stressed-out and distraught Adriana to "snitch" with inevitable results. This season's hot-button episode is "The Test Dream," in which Tony is visited by some of the series' dear, and not-so-dearly, departed in a harrowing nightmare.

5 out of 5 stars The Sopranos is the best tv show ever made.......2006-06-02

I started watching the Sopranos this year. I was hooked after one episode and bought the whole series. I was always an HBO Sex and the City fan but didn't think much of the Sopranos - I thought it was only about killing, cheating, gangs and strippers. I was wrong. This show is so complex and dynamic, with outstanding character plots and realistic family dramas, worth every penny! Tony Soprano is one wiseguy you are sure to love or love to hate! The packaging of these sets is excellent and the dvds are high quality. I am only hoping that HBO comes out with a gift collection of the series when it coms to an unfortunate end like they did for Sex and the City!

    5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2006-04-22

I never thought TV could be this good or produce anything like this. I have been ignoring the Sopranos for years, finally saw one episode on HBO in a hotel and bought the first five seasons set. I am hooked. These episodes are better than 95% of the movies that are released and are excellent in many dimensions. It helps that I grew up in North Jersey and am just a little older than Tony and his contemporaries (though not Italian). Terrific show, terrific DVDs.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Series.......2007-06-21

There are two innovations in the past few years that have made television viewing perhaps the best it's ever been: the ability through TiVo and other DVRs to watch programs as they are being recorded (eliminating the need to sit through commercials) and the establishment of complete season/complete series dvd sets of television programs.

I waited a while to purchase Deep Space Nine on dvd, waiting not only for a good price, but for a time when I would have a chance to spend some serious time with one of my all-time favorite shows. When the now-familiar amazon package arrived, it made my day, and I immediately put the first disc in. My emotional response was immediate, and quite intense: it felt like coming home after many years away. I hadn't quite realized until that moment just how much I'd missed coming to this place each week. The premiere was set up perfectly, introducing the major characters and conflicts that would play out over the course of the season, and, ultimately, the series.

The strength of DS9, as its fans will tell you, is in its depth. Setting the show in a stationary locale, the major plot-ines involved places and characters that would be back week after week, season after season. The regional conflict between Bajor and Cardassia, in particular, of necessity had to be complex enough to form the backbone of the overall story. The show couldn't introduce a story element and resolve everything tidily as the ship went on its merry way. The people stayed where they were, for the most part, and each plot added to the tapestry.

For this show to work, the characters had to be strong, as well, and boy are they ever. The strong Commander (later Captain). The Bajoran freedom-fighter torn between old loyalties and new. The young doctor. The trill. The shape-shifting constable. The weasely owner of the local watering hole/gambling establishment. The list goes on and on. There are bonds of friendship and love, but of conflicts and rivalries as well. Science fiction has always been about talking about humanity from a different perspective - and these characters are the most human (no matter their species) of any of the trek series.

For the depth of character and overarching plot lines, DS9 is my favorite star trek series. If you didn't think much of it while it was on the air, or if you missed it as much I did, I highly recommend revisiting this jewel of a series.

3 out of 5 stars Great show, dissapointing presentation.......2007-04-12

This is not a critique of the show, easily the best of the four from 80's to 90's. The issue here is the DVD. Firstly, the shows are filmed in 35mm, that's Widescreen so why is the DVD in 4:3 only? Secondly, the images are mostly grainy and not the razor sharp image a DVD should offer. Granted, only my 42" 3LCD HDTV I don't expect the expanded picture to be perfect, that's what HDDVD is for, but on a 27" TV it should look spectaculer and it doesn't.

Finally, the menu is horrible. Where's the "play all" feature, you have to watch each episode seperately and with opening and closing credits. Makes you wish the folks who did DVD's like Friends or Deadwood would have done this. It cost $400 for the series? I expect more for my money.

5 out of 5 stars Like Watching a 150 Hour-Long Trek Movie (The Good Kind).......2007-03-25

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the most unique, and in my opinion the best, of the five Star Trek series. Set on a space station and not a starship (though they get their own starship in the Defiant), Deep Space Nine gives you the chance to really live in the Star Trek universe for seven seasons. Since the crew can't just solve planet-wide problems in 45 minutes and move on to the next system, you end up with much deeper and long-lasting storylines. Just as one example, you first hear of the Dominion in season 2 before you ever meet them in the Season 2 finale, and they remain a major part of the series until the very last episode. Actions have consequences for every character. And there are as many fascinating recurring characters as there are in the main cast.

Due to its ongoing-story-line nature, this is also the best Trek series to own on DVD--catching an episode now and again on TV just doesn't cut it as well with Deep Space Nine. Season one starts out fairly slow (except for gems "Emissary," "Duet" and "In the Hands of the Prophets") but gets better and better withe very season right up until the end. Season 6 is, in my opinion, the best season of any Star Trek series.

The special features are also a lot of fun, but the real joy here is getting to watch the entire epic story without a single commercial and at your own convenience. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great But Get it Elsewhere.......2007-03-22

Most of the reviews I have read have had the same issue and I am with them. I don't care how you break down the math you can't justify paying over $800.00 for this set when you can get them separatly for half the price. Usually buying something in the comeplete set is cheaper, but not in this case. I got my set from ebay and it wasn't even close to $400.00. So definatly get the series but please shop around. The first year is sort of slow and so is season 2 but it picks up rapidly. And if you haven't seen or kept up with DS9 wait till you see the Dominion War Those seasons will leave you at the edge of your seat. I have been crazy about Star Trek since I can remember and outside of the original series this one is my favorite because everything isn't always perfect and this series is darker than all the others which gives this series a special appeal. This series is well done and well worth having but please shop around and don't pay over $800.00 for this series.

1 out of 5 stars Whoa....is that price a typo or was someone smoking something?.......2007-02-07

Having fulfilled some other TV series wants, I turned my sights to DS9. Someone somewhere sure mucked something up. Who in their right mind would pay over $800 when they can just buy each season individually for half that price?! Or even buy all 7 seasons from one of the marketplace sellers for a bit over $300. Yeesh.

I am so happy to finally get this. However was dissappointed that after opening realised didn't get first disc and there was nothing Amazon could do to replace it.

5 out of 5 stars SO HAPPY TO OWN LUCY.......2007-06-15

I remember watching this show when I was a kid. It was all re-runs but I loved the show alot..Lucy always cracked me up whenever she got into one of her silly little schemes. My fiancee and I are alot like Lucy and Ricky in so many ways its not even funny. I am so glad they finally released this show on DVD. I will NEVER get tired of watching the boxsets over and over again. I Love Lucy is superb, brilliant, and very funny! If you loved the show then you should defenitly buy the DVD Boxsets. I own them all even seasons 7-9 which I always thought was 'The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour' until I read somewhere online that it was originally 'I Love Lucy' so thats awesome! Anyways go out and buy this set if your a fan because you will NOT be disapointed at all! WE ALL LOVE LUCY and you will too once you watch one episode (if you haven't seen it yet).

5 out of 5 stars Keep Lucy Coming!!!.......2007-05-30

I own this dvd collection and am really happy with it.
I just hope that this release prompts season set releases.
Please vote for ALL of Lucy's remaining shows to be released as season set dvds. We now have complete sets of I Love Lucy and The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. We just need The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, and Life with Lucy.

5 out of 5 stars The complete series of I love lucy - or so you think........2007-05-24

This series is one of the most funniest sitcoms that was ever on television. But if you are buying the series and think you have all of the episodes, you are wrong. The follow up series to I Love Lucy is "the lucy-desi comedy hour," and is considered a part of the I Love Lucy series, and is out on DVD now, released as "I Love Lucy, seasons 7-9," and you should definately add those episodes to your collection. The Seasons 1-6 DVD has great special features, and great picture and sound quality. Some of my favorite episodes of the series are: Lucy does a TV commercial, Job switching, vacation from marriage, Lucy goes into labor, Ricky and Fred are TV fans, Lucy tells the truth, Ricky's movie offer, First stop, L.A. at last, Harpo Marx, Lucy visits grauman's, Lucy goes to Scotland, Return home from europe, off to florida, Lucy and the loving cup, building a bar-b-q, and country club dance. "I Love Lucy" is a wonderful series and is fun for the whole family, the kids will love it. This is a must for all "Lucy" fans.

5 out of 5 stars The definition of classic TV.......2007-05-14

What can I say about 'I Love Lucy' that has not already been said? I grew up watching the reruns. I'm sure I've seen every episode several times. They are as familiar to me as an old friend.

My two teenagers hadn't even heard of 'I Love Lucy' but were laughing hysterically at Lucy's facial expressions, Ricky's over-the-top Cuban accent, and all the comic hayhem. All of this, without a worry about f-bombs, or inappropriate topics or any of the social relevance that gets stuck onto TV comedy today.

From Vitameatavegemin to stomping grapes in Italy to the birth of her baby to stalking celebrities from Hollywood's Golden Age. 'I Love Lucy' is an American heirloom.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars May be the best Star Trek series ever..........2007-06-12

This DVD collection seems totally overpriced and should only be of serious purchase from those folks with the bread. And as of this writing, that means paying nearly $[ ] per season, which is just ridiculous. At half of that price, and for collectors and those who adore the show, it would be a bargain, but until Paramount lowers the price, it's a pass. Even though the series as a whole, which I will go into, may just be the best overall Star Trek TV series ever.

In the beginning, there was Star Trek. IN COLOR and on NBC, if I recall, I'll never forget my first initiation into the Star Trek universe. The original 60's version may, in many areas, still be the best Trek TV series, but in retrospect, while the original Star Trek was light years ahead of its time, and in that temporal respect, better than its later reincarnations (Star Trek: The Next Generation, ST:Deep Space Nine, ST: Voyager, and ST: Enterprise), Next Generation was a worthy rival, and so was Voyager.

I totally diss "Deep Space Nine" and "Enterprise" as dark space soap operas, and in very little ways, did either of these series live up to and deliver upon Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry's original "vision." Both Deep Space Nine and Enterprise rarely ever dealt with mindblowing ideas, and explorations of same, instead dwelling on pathetic "character development" of unimaginative characters, and boring melodrama.

Star Trek: Voyager was as good as Next Generation, if not even better in a lot of ways with better production design, story ideas, sets, and lots of special effects. While Next Generation and Voyager share a lot in common given the general quality of both, both try as hard as they might to stick to the original idea of Star Trek and Gene's initial vision, exploring strange new worlds, seeking new life, and going where no one has gone before.

Voyager is very similar to Next Generation. And that is generally a very good thing. In Voyager however, we have the captain of the ship a female, a black Vulcan, a Native American "number One," and a "hologram" medical doctor, the latter of which resembles the concept of "Data" from ST:TNG. Voyager's female captain is as strong and believable as Kirk or Picard before her. Feminists rejoice! And the few main surrounding characters around "Kat" Janeway, more than rival those around Captain Jean Luc of Next Generation. The holographic "doctor" is as interesting as Data was from ST:TNG, and develops throughout the seven years just like Data. But Voyager's strength's go beyond Next Generation as, in mid-later seasons, a transformed quasi-Borg/semi-human "Seven of Nine" character helped to revitalize the whole show, and lead to deeper and deeper idea-driven episodes after the series began to lag, cosmic idea-wise after the first few years.

The general, underlying idea of Voyager, is probably more true to Gene Roddenberry's original visions than any of the Star Trek series. And that's where the real value here is. The starship Voyager is, after all, in the very beginning, thrust into the opposite side of the galaxy, where there are so many unknowns, and creative story ideas to be had. While Voyager still holds up remarkably well to this day, one can only wonder at where this series might've gone under Roddenberry's control. For while Next Generation's original greatness seemed to fade in and out after Gene's death, Voyager kept up a consistency of quality not seen in ST:NG.

Star Trek: Voyager, like the original 60's version, and Next Generation, has its fair share of quite boring, bad episodes. And the character "Neelix" can be tiresome, but he makes for good comic relief at least. As in Next Gen, the "holodeck" functions often created episodes totally un-space or sci-fi idea related, but more often than not however, this show delivered several dozen of some of the best true sci-fi episodic "TV" shows the small tube has ever offered. While one many complain or nitpick about all things "Star Trek" (like, why do so many alien species, even on the other end of the galaxy, appear so human, or why alien technology is so similar to human, or why, why, why, why, why), I'm not one to nitpick here. If and until Paramount and the PTB offer this at a reasonable prive, while I can't really recommend purchase here (unless you're rich), I suggest all of my fellow trekkers check reruns of this on TV if possible, and tape them, and watch them (or fast forward during the boring episodes), with a keen eye towards a possible future buy.

It is a shame that this series in full is so overly-priced and out of reach I would guess for most Trek collectors. The wealth of ideas explored here (despite the continual ST techno babble - "try rephasing the protoplasmic, warp core EM spatial/temporal, stellar geometric gig-a-quad geotetris overrides"), are many and varied.

Slightly better than Next Generation, in my opinion, this incarnation of Star Trek is and was just about as good as anything "Star Trek" related goes, including the feature films. The special effects in some episodes are truly outstanding. And while I did not really go for the final two part episode's series ending, in between that and the first two parter which began the series, there is a LOT to like here. And if you can afford it, there are enough episodes which hold up up to repeated viewings to justify the high price. One just might want to wait for a price drop.

There are only 3 good ST series in my view, the original, Next Generation, and Voyager. Deep Space Nine and Enterprise are crap in comparison, and not worth the time or expense of any true sci-fi fan, for me at any rate. While the original series will always be the original, and while Next Generation expanded for the most part on one man's genius visions, Star Trek: Voyager had as many, if not more truly special episodes as anything before, or after it. And with a lot better sets, gizmos, and great big screen special effects.

And while Janeway herself is more than okay, Seven of Nine and Kes provide often needed eye-candy relief, when, often, the series begins to stray from the original idea of what Star Trek was supposed to be all about. Kudos in this area also to the specific and great episodes dealing with thought-inspiring ideas, and not just silly holodeck adventures or character-heavy episodes where the series often lost its way at times. Overall, and for the most part, I think the great bird of the galaxy (Roddenberry) probably would've approved, very much so of Voyager. It's too bad that the Voyager cast and storyline never got the Next Generation big screen attempts, but so it goes.

While the original, Next Gen and Voyager may be all dead projects for any further small or big screen attempts, Voyager will always remain as one of three of the five series, which seemed to get it right more often than not. And when it did get it right, the episodes were indeed and will forever be truly visionary sci-fi magic.

1 out of 5 stars Too highly priced!.......2007-06-10

No actual stores sell ANY Startrek Series anymore because they marked them up so high in price, no one is buying them. I asked the Best Buy guy, and he said they sat on the shelf, and no one bought them, so they got rid of them.

Why they are $98 is crazy. Maybe if they lowered the price to $49 a season, they would actually MOVE their stock.

I swear, were they not like $56 a few weeks ago? I was coming to buy one, then saw $98 and was like "um, no."

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek Voyager.......2007-06-03

I am a big fan of the series. However the way the set is shown is inaccurate I received a large box set with discs in folders

2 out of 5 stars Laughable price but a good show.......2007-05-28

The show is good, and I have a definite soft spot for it, but it's not even remotely worth the price for the legal, licensed versions.

Beware the cheap imports/bootlegs, though. I'm pretty sure now that "Chosen Collection", whether listed as "import US version" or not, is synonymous with bootleg. The packaging of the set I bought smacks of it, at least. Being in one box, all the discs are just shoved into a big collection of plastic sleeves that sit in an unglued binder type thing. While relatively attractive, the outer box and binder have wacky text that has nothing to do with Voyager. The discs are cheaply done, and some of them don't work properly. It's rather hit and miss.

If I had to do it all over again, I would not get the series at all, rather than waste money on bootlegs. I wouldn't have bought the set I did if I'd understood that they were actually bootlegs. I'm ashamed to have given the set as a gift, given the poor quality. I cringed as I watched my father open it. But as I said, I wouldn't spend the money on the genuine sets, either, soft spot for the show or not. Dad would've gotten something else as a gift. The show is engaging, but it's not a must-have masterpiece.

Paramount must be cuckoo to price them at this level. It only invites the level of bootlegging we see, and honest consumers get taken for a ride.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A little corny & dated, but still great!.......2007-06-28

I enjoyed this movie back in the 80's and enjoy it almost as much today. A light comedy that pertains to married friendships and what happens when one member of the circle of friends decides to get a divorce thereby threatening the remainder of the group, forcing them to examine their own lives and relationships. Directed by Alan Alda, with very strong performances by Jack Weston and Rita Moreno. Carol Burnett can get on your nerves but also gives an excellent performance.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Funny Movie.......2007-04-05

I love this movie. It is so rare to see Alan Alda much less the remainder of this unique cast all together at one time. This is about a group of spouses/friends that takes four seasonal vacations together, each and every year. This year is different though and that is what makes this movie very special. A definite buy!

    4 out of 5 stars Alan Alda's Best !!.......2007-04-04

Surprise ! This is a good movie ! This Early 1980's Comedy - Drama follows three middle aged couples who take vacations in the Spring , Summer , Autumn and Winter. Along the way the couples meet up with Middle age , Marital and Parental struggles. This is by far the best film Alan Alda ever directed as he also writes the moderately funny and (occasionally hilarious) script. The paired couple of (Jack Weston) and (Rita Moreno) provide the best laughs through the picture. (Carol Burnett) is Alda's wife and is no more than just fair in her performance. (Bess Armstrong) is very good as the younger woman for whom (Len Cariou) leaves his wife (Sandy Dennis) of 21 years for. Also watch for Alan Alda's two real life daughters (Beatrice Alda , Elizabeth Alda) who actually appear in the film when the two girls are visited at college by the three couples during their Autumn vacation.

4 out of 5 stars If you Love MASH..........2007-03-30

Alan Alda fans will love this movie. Alda haters, stay away. Alda is great in his role, as are Rita Moreno and an absolutely smokin' hot Bess Armstrong--and I mean en fuego. Carol Burnett is so-so. The story is great, and the script fast-paced. Alda wrote and directed.

Three couples vacation/spend long weekends together in each of the four seasons, accompanied by Vivaldi. When divorce strikes one of the couples, much self-examination, mutual analysis, mortality fears, etc. occur. Definitely a good movie. And did I mention Bess Armstrong is smokin' hot?

    5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Movie.......2007-03-08

This is a great movie. Great actors, great performances. It's an older movie, but I don't feel that it is too dated. Fun and interesting to watch.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Forensic Shows on TV.......2007-04-02

I have been a fan of all three CSI shows, for some time, because I love Forensics. I began to watch CSI Miami, more than the others, because I became so interested in the characters. I couldn`t believe how compassionate the Medical Examiner (Khandi Alexander) was, with her "charges". It also became a mystery to me about the complicated plots, and how they figured out the truth! The reason I bought the DVDs, besides being able to see them whenever I wanted, was because I missed quite a few shows, and had to watch re-runs. During some of the re-runs, things were mentioned, that I had no idea what they meant, and I was intent on finding out the answers. Thanks to the DVDs, I can find out all the answers. I think the CSI Series are some of the best shows on TV.

I ve been so happy since I bought this !!!!!!! Im having a blast from the past and remembering my childhood !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Still as much fun as ever!.......2007-01-24

I've had my fair share of cringeworthy experiences with catching an episode of an old favorite show on cable - within ten minutes I'm wondering why I ever enjoyed it when I was a kid. "MacGyver" isn't one of them. Just about any episode from any season is enough to remind me why I loved going along for the ride back then, and I still do.

Of course, I knew even as a teenager that he was a bit goody goody - ordering milk at a bar, never eating junk food, trying to reason gently with an ex-girlfriend who just tried to murder him, and yet he doesn't always wear his seatbelt - but it's all part of the fun. So are the occasional plot holes, which of course are a bit more noticeable this time around. I also seem to recall thinking as a kid that the show became less about gadgets and more about teaching life lessons in later seasons, but I now see that even the earliest episodes often had morality issues and the later seasons still had quite a bit of gadgetry to their credit. It's really a pretty consistent formula across all seven seasons.

The only problem with this set is that, if you're a fan, chances are you already bought at least a few other seasons separately. All seven of them are worth having, in any case, whether it's cheaper to fill in the blanks one by one or buy the entire set here.

4 out of 5 stars MacGyver the Complete Series.......2007-01-11

I bought this to watch with my wife and 13 year old son. I like that MacGyver is an uncorrupted hero. The DVD quality is great. I didn't watch the series in first run, so it's new to me. I still like when the DVD tells th origenil air date, and this one does not. But I am completely satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 80's Show Ever.......2007-01-10

I am definitely enjoying having every single episode of MacGyver ever made. The man is a genius and I am looking forward to reviewing the best way to defuse a bomb using duct tape, a paper clip, and some gum.

If terms like "pimhole" and "lesbotic tendencies" reduce you to a fit of giggles, you've already discovered the daffy pleasures of Fry and Laurie. Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie have gone on to other successes in film and television (not only did they gain acclaim and adoration as the title characters of Jeeves & Wooster, Laurie has become a household name in the U.S. as the star of House), but their comedy collaborations from the 1980s and '90s have earned them a place in the pantheon of British humor, somewhere between Monty Python and Ricky Gervais. They specialize in "linguistic elasticity," amazing flights of verbal lunacy ranging from overwrought poetry criticism to inventing their own swearwords to protest censorship. A Bit of Fry & Laurie: The Complete Collection... Every Bit! includes all four Fry & Laurie seasons, broadcast between 1987 and 1995. Conservatism is a regular target--an early sketch about a father protesting his son being taught biology is startlingly current--but politics generally takes a back seat to ridiculousness. Fry impersonates Michael Jackson; a doctor prescribes cigarettes; an exceedingly gracious jewelry salesman woos a customer with candied sweets; Fry and Laurie, with righteous indignation, castigate their audience for laughing at serious matters like alcoholism and genital fungus. The fourth series isn't as inspired, overall, but it does feature sparkling moments, such as a version of It's a Wonderful Life starring Rupert Murdoch. Armed with a startling array of false facial hair (and, as the seasons progress, an increasing amount of drag), Fry and Laurie introduce notions like screaming lettuce, a synchronized losing team, and the Omar Sharif Comedy Hour. It's divine silliness; any fan of British comedy will delight in "Every Bit" of Fry and Laurie. --Bret Fetzer

    5 out of 5 stars Soupy Twist.......2007-05-23

OK, this is based off the UK release, so I can't give you any details on features, etc. Instead, I'll focus on the series.

First, if you don't already know, A Bit of Fry and Laurie is a collection of sketches divided by mock interviews with the "British public" (always Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie). At times these sketches are of characters, whilst other times they are of the stars as themselves.

Vox pops abound in every series of A Bit of Fry and Laurie, but there is a lack of regular, recurring characters (unless you count Fry and Laurie), unlike in Little Britain. In series one and two, there are Tony and Control of MI6, and the promotors of Uttoxeter, and the like, but if you've seen those two series, you'll understand why they were dropped from three and four. (I won't go into too much detail on one and two; I'll assume you've already seen them.)

Series three introduces Mr Music (Hugh Laurie) who plays out the credits as Stephen Fry mixes up a strange, often disturbing, concoction. This bit, thankfully survives in the final series. Series three also marks a spike in music sketches (even Fry contributes his bit, as frightening as it seems in "You, You, You", etc.), including the popular "There Ain't But One Way", in which Laurie plays a Johnnie Cash-like singer with his brother Oren. I don't think you'll ever see Stephen Fry in a more unsophisticated role. By and large, this is my absolute favourite series, and my friends agree. Three hours just flew by.

Series four is... a tad awkward. Apparently, the programme was moved from BBC2 to the more restrained BBC1 (I may be wrong on the channels), where creative control was hampered by the station. They introduced (often) unnecessary guest stars who did not do much -- most of the funny sketches were done without them. Thankfully, Mr Music and Fry's disturbing concoctions are back, and even more disturbing than before. And for you fans of Hugh Laurie, he does a music sketch every episode, including "Little Girl" and the "Be Nice" rap.

All in all, this is a must
