Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Extended Cut should have been..........2007-05-30

There is no denying Stripes as a classic from my (insert age now) youth. And, sans the additional scenes, it is still an all-time favorite. However, I just can't get my arms around those extended scenes. The fact that a little warning is telling me throughout that "the director feels these scenes were superfluous, and a waste of your time" (my quotation marks) really doesn't help matters. Buy Stripes if you don't already own it. But, don't buy it for the extra scenes...

1 out of 5 stars 5 STAR MOVIE UNRATED EDITION DVD IN DEFECTIVE.......2007-04-11

I love this movie, but I am extremely disappointed with this unrated release. The first problem is that even though you can watch the theatrical version of the film, where ever the added scenes were put in there is a slight pause before going to the next scene! This is inexcusable and it distract the viewer every time it happens. The extra scenes are worthless so now either version is ruined. This should have been recalled. Great movie worthless DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Movie. Extended Cut not worth it........2007-02-01

Not worth the extra added scenes plus they are explicitly marked as added scenes. Kinda cheesy. The good news is that the original movie can also be played. The movie is a 5+

I bought this as a gift for my husband. I watched this when it was first released, very funny movie... worth watching over many times. You can't go wrong with Bill Murray.

Recorded in Blackpool, England's Empress Ballroom in January 2004 with 8mm cameras, the White Stripes' Under Blackpool Lights comes dang close to capturing the feel of their live show. The band has always eschewed the modern contrivances of digital music-making, opting for vintage guitars, a trap kit, and tube amps to lay down their synthesis of Americana and British invasion fuzz. The grainy film stock is the perfect visual complement to the peals of feedback and strong-armed beats the band delivers in 26 tunes that keep the audience bouncing. Highlights include a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," Leadbelly's "De Ballit of de Boll Weevil," and the band's own "Ball and Biscuit" and "Seven Nation Army." Fans who cherish the songs in this set on CD (or, better yet, vinyl) are in for a treat as every number is reinterpreted, with Jack White mining for new licks and singing like he's imbibing on a secret stash of Howlin' Wolf's moonshine. Meg, stomping her bass drum barefoot, has never looked or sounded as confident behind her kit, especially when she plays whole songs--literally, folks--with one hand behind her back. The disc contains no extras to speak of, just wall-to-wall rock, but true disciples of the Stripes won't leave disappointed. --Ryan Boudinot

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Avant-Garde or...?.......2007-07-01

The herky-jerky grainy thing really bothers me: Meg looks like a white blob with arms. Even the Beastie Boys' "Awesome..."--which had many reaching for the Gravol--wasn't as bad as I had been told, given that it took the occasional breather and offered up a clear, well-composed static shot. Rather than being indie, hip, or uncompromising, the visualization approach taken here seems merely lazy and thoughtless. Still waiting for the video collection...

5 out of 5 stars impressive!!!!.......2007-06-28

When I bought this dvd I was a casual white stripes fan,, now im a HUGE fan,, its unbelievable how many good songs they have that many people are not acquainted with..
this in particular is the ultimate rock show,, it has more awesome guitar solos than a led zeppelin and GNR concert together,, black math, dead leaves, death letter, ball and biscuit all have amaaazing guitar solos,, jolene is obviously incredible and their best recording of that song ever,, many people agree that this arrangement is better than the album version,,

the visuals are amazing,, it has a vintage / old school look and the camera angles make you feel like you at the actual concert,, the visuals go with the music perfectly,,
26 song set filled with gold old fashion rock and roll,,if you are a rock and roll fan you will not be dissapointed
enjoy

5 out of 5 stars simply electrifying..........2007-03-30

everything about this dvd is great.. the music is excellent and the stage performance is compelling... the grainy effect is oddly appealing.

i saw them perform live at berkeley and then bought this.

don't miss them if they play an arena near you. ofcourse, their music takes a little time to grow into.. but you will eventually love them..

5 out of 5 stars David Lee Roth called...Wants his pants back!.......2006-03-07

I have to wonder what Jack was thinking when he put them on. All I can say is that the seam in the front is mesmerizing. Can't take my eyes off the pants. Was this strategically planned? Hmmmm...leaves little to the imagination. Besides the pants, there are plenty more reasons to buy this DVD.

1. You like the White Stripes (obviously)
2. To watch Meg assault the drums (in a nice "Meg" sort of way)
3. Overamped, seemingly posessed Jack (as usual)
4. Raw, grainy concert footage, no glossy foo-foo stuff
5. Goes straight up the spine to the pleasure-sensing cortex in the brain, much like the feeling one gets when eating Godiva chocolates.

That's it....that's the best I can do to describe it. Now go buy it. TRUST ME!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love this!!.......2006-02-25

If you like The White Stripes you will love this video. It is high energy rock and roll!

When you start watching Racing Stripes, you may not be prepared for how unbelievably cute a young zebra is. A travelling circus accidently abandons an adorably helpless zebra in the middle of Kentucky on a stormy night. Fortunately, the wee zebra is found by Nolan Walsh (Bruce Greenwood, The Sweet Hereafter), a brilliant horse trainer who's given up his calling after a riding accident that killed his wife. His daughter Channing (Hayden Panettiere, Raising Helen) names the zebra Stripes and, before you know it, Stripes has grown to young adulthood and is aching to race at a nearby track. Thus begins a fairly formulaic triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals--but Racing Stripes understands its formula and executes it without any pretensions. It doesn't hit the bullseye struck by Babe (an earlier triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals), and there are bad puns and gags aplenty, but Greenwood's solid presence gives the movie an unexpected emotional fullness. Featuring a bizarre assortment of voices for the animals, including Whoopi Goldberg, Dustin Hoffman, Frankie Muniz, Mandy Moore, Joe Pantoliano (as a Mafioso pelican), Steve Harvey, David Spade, and Snoop Dogg. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Racing Stripes .......2007-06-13

Racing Stripes
Stripes is a zebra that wants to compete in the Kentucky outlaw horse race. With his young jockey, Channing Walsh they compete to run in the horse race. Stripes gets made fun of because of his short legs and Mohawk. Will this young girl and her zebra surprise all the other contestants? Or will her father tell her she can't race because if the recent death of her mother for jumping horses?
This is one of my favorite movies. Frankie Muniz as the voice of Stripes just makes the movie so funny and Hayden Panettiere as Channing Walsh is such an amazing actress. Hayden has played in Bring It On All or Nothing and Ice Princess. I think her best movie would be Ice Princess. She was a great actress in Racing Stripes but it wasn't her best. Be ready to ride this movie, it's very exciting and entertaining.
This movie is great for all ages and its funny. Kids will love all the talking animals like Reggie the roster, Franny the goat, Tucker the old yet wise miniature horse, Stripes the zebra that thinks he's a horse, Sandy the white filly and Buzz and Scuzz the brother flies. You have got to see this wonderful movie of 2004.
This movies rating id PG, its 1 hr 42mins long and was produced by David Eggby.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie.......2007-05-21

This is a must movie for the whole family from Great Grandpa down to the newest great grandkid to watch. We all enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-03-26

This is by far one of the funniest, most enjoyable movies I have seen in a long time. I will watch it many times I'm sure. I am a 56 yr. old female who loves to laugh.

4 out of 5 stars OK... but doesn't hold child's interest long.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children and provides them with access to seeing farm animals. Good learning experience without the violence and negative concepts often portrayed in movies.

5 out of 5 stars my son's favorite.......2006-11-20

one of the best things about this movie is the croatian synchronization - it is brilliant!
animal animation is done seamlessly and totally naturally.
plot is slightly predictable (to adults) while human acting is children movie black/white sort - not the movie i would wanna watch over and over like i do "cars", for example.
however, the story is also the best thing about the movie -from parents' point of view. i want my son to watch films with no violence and shooting and i want him learn about values, friendship and courage, holding on to his dreams, about daring and achievement.
good family fun.

These movies are super!!!!!! The team of Bill Murray & Harold Ramis is excellant. They really have a great chemistry whether it is acting together or whether Ramis is directing Murray. I highly reccomend these movies!!

The iconic headliners and forward-looking newcomers include Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Stripes and many more. Coachella: The Film is already taking its place beside concert epics such as Woodstock as the musical portrait of a generation.

1 out of 5 stars Man does this suck.......2007-04-10

This was just painful. This scatters back and forth between clips of music, clips of interviews with the artists, clips of festival performers, and clips of the audience who are out to prove that they're there for everything but the music, and yet will tell you over and over again that they're there only for the music. You don't get enough of the music or performances to care about them. You don't get enough of the interviews with the artists to know if you care about anything that they're saying. And you get way too much of the audience, so you do know beyond any shadow of doubt that you don't care about them.

The highlight of the film, if there is one, is a back and forth montage between a member of Oasis and some idealistic performer I can't recall the name of. Our cynical little Gallagher brother drones on and on that the idea that music can change the world is dead, that it can't be done anymore, it's simply a dead idea of a bygone era. It's actually the greatest thing any member of Oasis has ever said in any forum, and probably the only true thing they've ever said. Anyway, the clip goes back and forth between his cynical view of music and the bright eyed ambition of an artist that still believes he can change the world, even if one person at a time. I have to think when he watches the movie, the humiliation is unreal. Of course, I have to think anyone that sees themselves on this film would be humiliated beyond words.

1 out of 5 stars Perry Farrell, why have you forsaken us?.......2006-07-12

... Heck, I'd settle for John Popper and the return of HORDEfest.

Sweet Jesus, there are not enough words in the English language to describe how painful this DVD is. Apparently produced by hyperactive 22 year olds drinking caseloads of Red Bull, this DVD pretty much encapsulates what is wrong with the empty TV of MTV. Pandering to the ADD crowd, the camera never lingers for more than 2.4 seconds on any one scene. What the hell, were they paying their camera guys by the minute? Performances are interspersed with spoken interviews and the camera occassionally focuses on a concertgoer who is singing along with the band onstage ('cause, man, you know... everyone was having so much fun!).

If you've ever been to a concert and felt embarrassed for having something in common with your fellow concertgoers, then you should definitely not watch this DVD. Callous youth have never seemed so vapid. It would be excusable if these kids were stoned or drunk or under SOME chemical influence while making so many stupid comments but I'm sorry to say that they appeared quite straightedge.

As other reviewers have noted, this is the crux of the issue. The DVD attempts to give the crowd their fifteen minutes of fame rather than focus on the music performances. (People, it's about you! You're all stars! You have the power to make a difference and you're young and beautiful and edgy and fun! Now go buy a $40 t-shirt and a $10 bottle of Smart Water!)

Note to the girl dancing onstage during the Belle and Sebastian performance: you should really sue the producers for raping you of your dignity.

3 out of 5 stars In the days of the box set,.......2006-06-10

Yeah it's got the mood there fella but really lacks the fullness I was looking for. A great video would have at least had 3 songs per performance. Morrissey's song was cut and that was dissapointing. I got the film to see that and it was like 2 min 25 seconds long. OK.

This video is really just a preview of what could have been and isn't. Rent. Don't buy.

5 out of 5 stars NOT a concert movie...and better for it!.......2006-05-21

While other reviewers have zeroed in on this movie's lack of complete performances or its penchant for "split screens" and "cliched" techiniques, I find "Coachella" a truly interesting capsule of the various moods and bands that hit the stages and fields of this SoCal staple. The film features stunning photography, and tries to portray the many experimental and conventional aspects of the festival. Yes, we see some of the "hippier" trappings like the bike inventions and the "modern" art, but we also see a spirit of kindness and joy of life that is missing from most modern celebrations. I certainly didn't expect complete performances, but most are long enough to get the feeling and vibe of the moment. This also kept the film moving at a faster pace, and acknowledges that while some like Björk or Radiohead, others might not like them enough to stand a complete performance by some of these artists; for these, a little will go a long way. "Coachella" doesn't claim to be a "concert film", and thank God it isn't. I hope another set is released with complete performances, because I would love to see them, but in the context of a concert DVD.

2 out of 5 stars How To Fritter Away An Awesome Music Documentary Opportunity..........2006-05-08

Pre-empting the imminent release of a film surrounding the awesome UK festival Glastonbury, California's music event most closely aligned with its English counterpart is here given similar documentary treatment. A lack of linear progression or narration means that the footage contains none of the flair that appearances from acts such as The Pixies, Radiohead and Morrissey should create. Songs are rarely featured in their entirety, unrelated genres are unsympathetically banked up against each other and the whole project becomes an aimless souvenir tribute that segregates against viewers who haven't experienced this festival held on polo fields in a man-made oasis. The Flaming Lips, Fischerspooner and The Arcade Fire try to lighten proceedings, but this is a scrambled opportunity.
The DVD extras include additional photographs, a colour booklet and interviews with bands such as Ben Harper, The Dresden Dolls and The Libertines, none of whom actually feature on the documentary itself. What a bloody waster.

Description

On 'Candy Coloured Blues' we go behind the music to get the inside track on the making of this unique band. Packed with interviews, this in-depth documentary film takes you where the cameras never previously preyed to uncover a truly remarkable story. Hailed as the saviours of rock n' roll, the White Stripes blasted out of Detroit and turned the music world on it's head. But are they simply a brother and sister doing what they love or is there more to them and their cutting edge sound than meets the eye? In-depth examination of the Detroit music scene, past and present, that both nurtured and launched them to international success.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the Stripes? Not much new but mildly entertaining.......2005-12-23

This is kind of an odd documentary - it's about one of the most famous bands in the world (who seem pretty chatty) but includes only interviews with people who know them or `know someone who knows them.' Well, any way to make a buck.

As an avid fan I still like the DVD. There are a couple of tidbits to learn and it's interesting to see how the entire phenomenon rose up in Detroit. Decent effort but I'd try to rent it first.

3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2004-02-10

First of all, this DVD was unauthorized. There are no White Stripes music, performances, or videos. Also, the number of interview segments from the band members are extremely limited. As such, the whole DVD is only 65 minutes long.

On the plus side, however, the video has a lot of interviews Detroit-scene insiders and the engineers discussing the beginnings of the band and the making of each of their records. Personally, I found the documented destruction of the brother-sister myth to be worth the price of the DVD alone, although we do not find out much about WHY Jack White perpetuates the story.

The bottom line is that this is probably the best you are going to get from a band that attempted to steep itself in myth and mystery.

1 out of 5 stars not good.......2004-01-07

i didn't even watch this dvd and i hated it from the start. not good.

4 out of 5 stars review.......2003-11-20

i think that some particular reviews were a bit harsh, and honestly comletely rubbish. I think that not everyone is going to enjoy this dvd, but if you didnt want to see how the band was formed and developed then you probably shouldn't have bought it any way. It is an interesting insight into the world of the white stripes and i think that it was worth the money, as any other fan would.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2003-10-17

If you are looking for a dvd that is filled with White Stripes music and interviews, look elsewhere. The item description says it has over 40 minutes of in-depth interviews, but it fails to mention that only about 10 minutes (if that) of this is actually with the band (and the 10 minutes are scattered throughout the 65 minute dvd). It has interviews with members of various bands that have played with the White Stripes in the past and others who knew them when they were just beginning. It is mildly interesting to hear about how the band got their start and other such details, but it is not something I will watch again. (If Jack & Meg were telling their own story, THAT would be worth it).

    1 out of 5 stars Complete rip-off crap.......2006-12-29

You know that spoof movie, "Waiting for Guffman" ? About 20 minutes into this "documentry" I felt like I was watching waiting for guffman.

If you are a white stripes fan, you will absolutley HATE this rip off. It's the biggest piece of crap ever. There is >> NO < < white stripe music. There is no white stripe performance footage. There is NO original white stripe interviews.

This is just a bunch of people from detroit who sit around and tell "inside" stories about jack and meg white. All of the stories can be utter crap lies but no one will bother to actualy check up on them because it's true crap.

There is one interview in particular when one of the "insiders" goes on for a few minutes about how great the colors red and white are. He goes on to explain, "Red and white can be side-by-side, up and down, red can incircile white, or white can incircle red. Red can be next to white, or white can be-next-to------red"

Well thank you VERY much for that insight about how one could potentialy arrange the colors red and white.

I wish I can get the time and money back. I never post Amazon reviews but since this DVD was THAT bad I feel it's my civic duty to warn others.
