As the second TV season approaches it climax, Ash Ketcham has advanced to the Pokémon League Tournament at Indigo Stadium, the Pokémon Trainer's equivalent of Wimbeldon. Ash has to contend with the overconfidence and occasional thoughtlessness that have dogged him throughout the series. During his first matches, Misty and Brock coach from the sidelines--when Brock isn't too busy chasing every pretty girl in sight. Professor Oak offers additional advice from Pallet Town and sends Ash the exotic Pokémon he needs. Although the score seesaws back and forth, it's a forgone conclusion Ash will win each match; a bigger question is whether he can learn to become a gracious winner. Gary, Professor Oak's arrogant grandson, is defeated early in the Tournament, although a final duel between him and Ash remains inevitable. Team Rocket's comic villainy produces the usual disastrous results--until Jessie and James discover they're actually good at selling souvenirs and fast food; Meowth is appalled at the prospect of going straight. Rated suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars The Pokemon League at last..........2006-02-02

After a decent wait, we finally get to see what die-hard Pokemon fans have been waiting to see for quite some time: the actual Pokemon League competition. These episodes vastly outshine the rather mediocre mid-series episodes from the period between the Saffron and Cinnabar gyms, but are also pretty good in their own right--lots of decent Pokemon battling, believable plot (for a change) with a good human story, and several at-least-somewhat-memorable new characters.

I also have a few bones to pick with the Editorial Review above. He really is not qualified to comment, as it is painfully obvious that he has never seen any episodes beyond those on this disc. If he HAD, he would know that Ash's victories are by no means a foregone conclusion (4 of all his Indigo League gym victories came on at least his 2nd attempt). He would also know that Ash does not, in fact, win his 5th League match and ends up finishing "in the top 16." No malice intended; I simply do not believe that said review is quite fair, or even accurate.

5 out of 5 stars I love pokemon.......2004-02-09

This DVD is one of the best I seen yet. Its when ash is in the pokemon leauge battleing. He wins with his kingler. It is so exciting through the whole match. It is a must buy for the pokemon lovers like me.

5 out of 5 stars A Must!.......2002-07-31

In pokemon round one Ash faces off against anounther trainer named Mandy with his Krabby. What will happen?

I recommend this DVD for all pokemon fans.

5 out of 5 stars round one of the pokemon league.......2001-05-22

i think that i quite agree with the other customer review that this is sort of in the G/PG side, but the main sidekick shouldn't worried that there's going to be trouble in the first few rounds, take for example,if gary decided that hw wanted to battle ash then ash would say 'no problem with battling a fellow trainer, all right, let's battle, gary' because that would be a kind comment that he would say to him and also, you take in all the different elements that occur during round one, like for example, team rocket would make another one of their funny plans to steal pikachu, but the main plot in the story is the pokemon league and i think that if people in that story [including team rocket] understood that a pokemon league battle is important, then team rocket would steal pikachu during the certain part in the climax of the round

4 out of 5 stars pokemon.......2001-02-07

I don't see why everyone seems to hate it, but theres nothing wrong with pokemon. The anime is on the G/PG side but that's ok. It is generally fun to watch and remains entertaining through the whole series. So if you haven't seen pokemon yet, don't listen to what everyone says and check it out.
