The gorgeously ingrown subgenre of Japanese manga and anime known as shojo, entertainment aimed specifically at young girls, is arguably the most interesting stuff coming out of that vast Japanese entertainment factory at the moment. The TV series Virgin Fleet, created by shojo veteran Ohji Hiroi (Sakura Wars), isn't quite as extravagantly expressionistic as Revolutionary Girl Utena or Escaflowne, but it comes close, and its sleek retro "alternate history" setting is a cut above. Unfolding in a warped version of Japan in the 1920s, the series follows a group of adolescent female warriors, mysteriously endowed with an occult lighting-bolt power known as "Virgin Energy," who are recruited as cadets in a top-secret military unit in the run-up to World War II. The story lines combine typical schoolgirl crushes and peer-group rivalries with exhilarating aerial-combat sequences. As is often the case in shojo anime the visual embellishments are gratuitously lush, the emotional entanglements surprisingly intense and complicated. The central character, Shokase, is an orphan who puts her marriage plans on hold in order to continue defending the motherland against its rapacious Western enemies. The tape has been self-rated as suitable for viewers aged 13 and up, and that seems about right; the virginity issue is discreetly presented. The installment includes the first three episodes of the original series, dubbed in English. --David Chute
Description
Life isn't easy for the girls in the super-secret Virgin Fleet. Schoolwork is rough and the competition's brutal. Luckily, cadets are trained in the use of "Virgin Energy," serious blasting power useful for playing pranks, scuffling with the (ick!) boys, and blowing enemy war planes out of the sky!

3 out of 5 stars Nothing spectacular.......2001-08-11

Virgin Fleet starts out with a bit of comedy, perhaps even a Project A-ko feel, but soon loses that aspect for a more serious look. The series fails to have good character development, and due to this, some moments are not as powerful as they were meant to be. You might enjoy watching the DVD once, but don't expect to be watching this over and over. I felt like I was forced to watch the last episode just so that I could put the DVD away.

Unfortunately, the DVD comes with close to no extras: the English/Japanese dialogue with options for subtitles, and a few trailers of other series, but that's it.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good story for all the family.......2001-08-07

This is a very good serie, where the women are the main role for the history. They give very good values for the family, they sayd how important is to be Virgin for a girl and in this serie this is the main point, the Virgin have a special power that they have and call Virgin Power, with this they create an Academy and have an Army. But not always the history is pink, bacause they have rivals and have a war. Besides during the history you will see romance, action, envidy and many other thinks that make this DVD a must have for anyone, specially if you are a lover of "Rose Anime", I mean love Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yugi, and other like those. Surely all the moms will love the history and the message that they give.

4 out of 5 stars Its not what you think it is........2001-01-23

In case your wondering, the answer is no. All the virgin's in Virgin Fleet remain vigins. It's just a very aluring title. Anyway, this three episode OAV series is about three girls in the NAVY who fight off in cool battle scenes. This anime title falls into the giggling-girls-fighting genre. Thats not to say that the action in Virgin Fleet isn't ruined at all. Virgin Fleet is a great video, but there is so much more potential in it. The art design is ok and the music is bothersome. If your one of those who loved Magic Knight Rayearth and Sailor Moon, buy this tape. If you crave action from your anime, I'd recommend renting this one first and then decide on buying. Virgin Fleet isn't perfect, but its still a great title.

4 out of 5 stars Where to start..........2003-07-03

First Review: Virgin Fleet. A story about choices and a power called 'Virgin Force' which seems to act very much like the force out of Star Wars. The setting seems to be Japan, 15 years after an enemy invasion was stopped by a battleship crewed by a female crew. Now female cadets are being trained to fight and win the next war. They have to know how to fly, fight and, yes, be virgins. The three episodes focus mostly on three cadets, their reasons for wanting to join the Virgin Fleet and the results, good or bad, their choices bring about. Lots of violence and a strong pro-virgin position. Made in the late 90s, the music and themes remind me a lot of 'Oh My Goddess!'series (but not as much humor). Total time is 90 minutes. I give it 3 out of 5.

Second Review: Gall Force. Seems to be the first movie out of a whole series of 'Gall Force' movies. And it was a movie, not a series of episodes stringed together. Made around the mid-1980s, it is full of mecha and battles, very much like Robotech, but it is more polished. The artists took a lot more time on each cell, each scene, being that it is about 86 minutes long, they could spend a lot more on the flow of the plot, the surprise ending and even the cool alien race (who really remind me of the Invid). The music is used just like in a live-film, to help the mood in flashbacks and such. Also, there is a lot of nudity, slight nudity and, of course, violence. I give it a 5 out of 5 and it's really what saves the 2-pack. Lots of plot twists which keeps you hooked AND guessing. Also the writers were willing to kill off characters to keep the plot going.
Note: IF you can get Gall Force WITHOUT Virgin Fleet go for it.
