Chou-Kishin Zenki...Sugoi!.......2002-08-12
A thousand years later evil Master Karuma and her three demonic servants are trying it again. She sends out 108 'Seeds of Posesion', which take advantage of people's desires and twist them into something nasty (or nastier). When Enno Chiaki is attacked at her shrine by a couple of henchmen, she frees Zenki, unknowing of his power. All seems lost at first, but Chiaki figures out to retyrn Zenki to his true form, a tall, musuclar bishie with an attitude. But then you discover that Zenki would love nothing more to kill Chiaki and be free. Nope. Not gonna happen, not while Chiaki has the guardian bracelet anyway. So, Chiaki, go find the seeds of evil! The story progresses and gets more advanced, more demons are added, and a big rival too. The picture is very nice, but the dubbing cuts out anything inappropriate or religious. Watch it subititled when you get this.
The OP themes are done by Kageyama Hironobou, the singer who did most of the music for DBZ, as it's all very nice.I love the seond OP, ' Demon Lord Zenki, Welcome the Dead'! DO buy this. I can't wait to buy the second saga!!

Zenki: An out-of-nowhere winner.......2001-12-13
AnimeWorks have been good to us, and they've pulled the animated TV version of "Zenki" out of the closets and given it the DVD treatment. This is a pretty packed set -- there's 13 episodes on 2 discs here, with excellent-quality transfers and hybrid (sub/dub) editions of all the episodes.
The story is essentially simple: Chiaki Enno is a teenaged girl who lives in a small mountain village. She's the granddaughter of the shrinekeeper -- despite being an old woman, Granny can sling an o-fuda faster than Chiaki can -- and is more interested in boys and trying to do a halfway decent job in school than she is in the shrine. One day there's a series of mishaps involving a pair of thuggish priests, and a horrendous evil is unleashed on the world. The only way to counter it is to have Chiaki unleash the guardian spirit, Zenki.
There's only one problem: Zenki looks like a little kid. A really bratty, self-important little kid with no manners, no inhibitions, and not one whit of care about the rest of the human race. However, when Chiaki triggers his powers through a special wristlet, he turns into the monstrously tall and powerful Zenki of legend, tearing his enemies apart with his bare hands. He's also attracted to the "Seeds of Evil," the little gumdrop-like monsters that are causing all the havoc. Gumdrop is probably right: when he finds a Seed, he eats it, and thereby brings the world that much closer to balance.
Chiaki and Chibi-Zenki (or Dai-Zenki, for that matter) do not like each other very much. When Zenki isn't raiding the refrigerator or getting kicked out of the girl's locker room, he's being an uncooperative nuisance. But Chiaki realizes he is probably the only line of defense they have against the Seeds of Evil, and soon the two begin to work in a grudging partnership.
Another plot thread involves the evil gods who are sowing the Seeds of Evil. Each Seed uses a person's own desires against him (a la Buddhist thinking); a glutton turns into a ravaging monster that eats everything in sight, for instance. The gods are convinced this is the way to conquer the world -- by turning desires against the human race. But there is internal dissent within the ranks of the gods; not all of them see eye to eye on how to get rid of the allegedly immortal Zenki.
The show's a little repetitive at first. Most of the episodes center around them finding a Seed of Evil and killing the monster that spawns from it. But over time subtle changes creep in -- the plot about the gods themselves, for instance, or the way Chiaki deals with Zenki. Most of the byplay between them is riotously funny; I loved a bit where Chiaki trots out Zenki as their patron god of the shrine, only to have everyone reject him because he's so small and goofy-looking.
"Zenki" is good enough in its first volume to make me want to check out the rest. Kudos to Anime Works for bringing this home.
