First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

5 out of 5 stars A Good movie.......2007-07-03

This is an awesome movie i enjoyed it alot, i think it's a movie for everyone of all ages.

If you liked this movie then check out the soundtrack and video game.

4 out of 5 stars Not Besson's Best But Still Good.......2007-06-28

Luc Besson fan's may be a bit disappointed but most people would probably really enjoy the movie as I did. Madonna was surprisingly good as the voice of Princess Selenia. De Niro's voice over work did not seem to fit at all. I honestly have no idea why the director was cool with it. Freddie Highmore was also very good. I believe that using unrecognizable voices in movies like this can add to the charm. Sometimes using "A" list actors takes away from the charm of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars delightful movie.......2007-06-27

Both of us really loved it. The morphed kids were delightful, the backgrounds very cool, the villians a hoot, and the ending was perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Cute movie but ugh the voices..........2007-06-27

I loved everything about this movie except for most of the choices of voice actors for the characters. David Bowie was great as the villain. The rest... Bateman, De Niro, awful! Madonna as the princess and little kid's love interest?! PLEASE! Sadly, I feel these things really ruined an adoreable movie. I understand they got big name actors to help draw people, but the casting was bad... really bad. I would have much rather had no named people who's voices fit the look of the characters.

2 out of 5 stars Great Film, Bad DVD.......2007-06-11

When I origionally saw this film in the cinema, it was great! full of action and the jokes where quite witty.
Unfortunatly this dvd version has been censored to a point where quite a few of the action sequences have been cut out and the film just dosn't flow.
The film cuts from diferent scenes, missing out sections that leave the viewer quite puzzled about how the characters got to the point they are at.
I don't understand why they would censor an animated film that is rated PG anyway.
All in All if you can get your hands on the origional version its a must!
but for the time beeing I'd stay away from it, it kind of ruins the real fun the story has.

Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie........2007-06-21

I remember watching this movie when I was younger a few years after it came out on VHS. I'll admit that then, I obviously didn't understand the WWII concept (as I was maybe 7 or 8 years old) but it still was a movie that I continually loved to watch. Even now, roughly 15 years after its release, I still thoroughly enjoy this film.

So what's this movie about? It's World War II and there's a need for American sports to raise morale. With the men away, who is going to play? The women, of course! This movie shows the beginnings of mainly two specific teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. From the ups and downs stemming from the game, to the ups and downs stemming from the women's personal lives, this movie gives us a glimpse into the lives of women living during the WWII era.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, there's an abundance of famous actors and actresses including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell. Looking back, I truly didn't appreciate how wonderful the casting was for this movie. Second, this movie forces a ton of emotions out of you. Some scenes are funny, some scenes show hope, and some scenes are sad. It isn't just about baseball. It's mainly about the lives of the women playing the game. Third, anyone, no matter what age, will enjoy this movie. From the older folks who can remember what it was like living during this period, to younger people like myself who simply enjoy the humor, this movie provides so much entertainment.

And what's not to like? Nothing really. As I said above, younger children will like this movie although they probably won't understand the war aspect. Apart from that, this movie contains no other negatives.

When it comes to movies that all will enjoy, A League of Their Own is at the top of my list.

4 out of 5 stars There's no crying in baseball!.......2007-06-15

The men go over seas for war. The All-American Baseball League needs to make money, so they create and All-American Girls Baseball League.

Dottie Hanson (Geena Davis) and her "kid sister Kit," (Lori Petty) play in a local softball league and get recruited to play in the new major league. Jimmy Dugan, (Tom Hanks) a washed up a former baseball player, gets fed up with the girls he manages but then gets used to the change of gender. Dottie ia an awesome catcher and hitter who everyone loves, while Kit is an okay pitcher and hitter who everyone likes. Hanson is the best on the team and everyone knows it, Kits gets jelous and things don't work out too well between them. Madonna (Mae) and Rosie O'Donnell (Doris) are also starring on the team. All the cast members did an awesome job acting.

I thought this movie was going to be boring, because my mom picked it out but it turns out I was laughing hysterically and enjoying th movie. This classic, major league comedy will catch your eye. "A League of Their Own is own of my favorite movies and will soon be yours too.

I recommend this to mostly eight years old and up because of mild language. Other than that this movie flabbergasted me, it is awesome! You will love this movie once you see it!

5 out of 5 stars All-time favorite movie.......2007-04-25

This has got to be my favorite movie of all time. I was a big fastpitch player back in middle school and high school and when this movie came out I was pretty excited. Great actors, great story, and inspiring that it was actually based on a true story. Movies just aren't as good now-a-days like they used to be back in the 80s and 90s. This is a must see!

4 out of 5 stars Girls play ball?.......2007-04-04

This baseball movie set in the middle of WWII, is excellent, and my granddaughters watch it over and over! Since my granddaughters are avid softball players this true story video about a woman's baseball league helps promots woman sports in a very realistic way. Highly recommended for any baseball coillection and for viewing by all girl ball teams, they will love it!

4 out of 5 stars What did the nation do for sports entertainment while all the young men were off at war? .......2007-03-12

According to "League of their Own", womens' baseball teams were formed to keep the sports fans happy. So, Rosie had an option for a bat as well as a riveter. "League of their Own" is not a completely accurate picture of the life of women during World War II, but it's a very entertaining film about women's self reliance and learning to play on a team.

After more than a decade of false starts and several potential directors, the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical finally made it to the big screen with Alan Parker (The Commitments) at the helm and Madonna in the coveted title role of Argentina's first lady, Eva Perón. A triumph of production design, costuming, cinematography, and epic-scale pageantry, the film follows the rise of Eva Perón to the level of supreme social and political celebrity in the 1940s. Like Madonna, Perón was a material girl (she was only 33 when she died); she was instrumental in the political success of her husband, Juan Perón (Jonathan Pryce). But Eva was also a supremely tragic figure whose life was essentially hollow at its core despite the lavish benefits of her nearly goddess-like status. The film has a similar quality--it's visually astonishing but emotionally distant, and benefits greatly from the singing commentary of Ché (Antonia Banderas), who serves as a passionate chorus to guide the viewer through the elaborate parade of history. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Savior in the Eyes of Argentina.......2007-05-01

Evita is a historically relevant musical about a woman named Evita Peron who, in the early twentieth century, rose to the top and became a significant influence to the people of Argentina. She started her life out on the lowest ranks of society, an outcast in her own right, she slowly rose her way up to become a national figure in the political spectrum. I thought it was a very well made movie with a great deal of historical accuracies incorporated into it. Madonna was an excellent choice for casting. This movie has an excellent entertainment value while also incorporating historical value into it!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific musical.......2007-04-26

Evita is the best contemporary historical musical out there. Madonna shines in this film, as does Antonio Bandaraz. Anyone who doesn't appreciate Evita, obviously doesn't know their history.

My one complaint is that the DVD has NO extra features! There really is no point in purchasing the DVD over the VHS unless you want to be able to flip through the chapters or care about wide screen. I would have liked to see some director's commentary as well as an interview with Madonna. Some historical notes would have been nice too.

3 out of 5 stars Original and flawed.......2007-04-18

Evita is not really a musical. It is an uneasy combination of tableau and opera. There is no spoken dialogue. It is worth seeing just for the great costumes and production values and the exquisite cinematography. Crowd scenes are well staged and exciting. There are also some great dance scenes. With powerful voices and a convincing star this could have been an extraordinary film. However, with the exception of Antonio Banderas, the singing is surprisingly thin and weak. Jonathan Pryce as Juan Peron gives a fine understated performance, but Madonna is miscast: past her prime and out of her depth. The first rule of acting is "look good on screen" and unfortunately she doesn't. Gaunt and sallow, with garish makeup and inexplicably bloodshot eyes, she cuts an unconvincing and depressing figure. As he did in Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote one great song and a whole lot of junk. Sequences of rock music here and there are jarring and anachronistic.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-16

I haven't heard the original cast recording so I can't compare this to it but, I think this is a very good movie/musical. Madonna and Antonio Banderas did a great job! The music is really good. This musical is not as good as The Phantom of the Opera but it is hard to be better than Phantom. You MUST see EVITA!

5 out of 5 stars Banderas and Madonna are in top form in this great film........2007-04-15

This masterpiece of film-making needs re-evaluation since in hindsight it can be seen for the superb and masterful work of art and entertainment that it is. I have now seen the film three times and each time I am amazed that this film has not been recognized widely for its considerable attributes.

How does a director convey the oppressive nature of Fascism in a musical? Alan Parker succeeds wonderfully through his use of a muted brown, beige, black, and vanilla color range. He does it through the wonderful photography of riots, poverty, wealth, militarism, and the signs and symbols of power. The cinematography in this film is great. The art direction is super. The editing is perfect. It is a mystery to me why this film wasn't more appreciated by the public.

I think one reason is that folks don't know history and understand the rise of fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Argentina in the 1930s and 1940s. Peron's brand of fascism was threatening to the oligarchy in Argentina that had ruled a nation of farmers and cowboys and peasants. Thus there is no clear picture of good guys and bad guys in the film. At times Eva's appeals to the poor and underserved, the establishment of her foundation, and her ability to communicate with the masses puts her in the role of saint. However, the extortion of the rich to pay for her charities and thus maintain the popularity of Peron is a shrewed political power play.

Madonna is super in this film. Her acting is not naturalistic because she is playing an over-the-top diva and saint. It is Antonio Banderas who gives us a running commentary thorughout the film that continually grounds the viewer in the facts and the actions in this opera.

One last comment: there are very few songs that have the power of Webber and Rice's Don't Cry for Me Argentina. Madonna's performance is spotless when she sings this from her balcony to the crowd below.

This unbearable quartet of stories was written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. With Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More Of A Pet Project Than True Cinema ...But Still ..........2007-06-10

An anthology of short films bound by one character is what you'll find in FOUR ROOMS. And all of the shorts are directed by four different directors with decidedly four different styles that overlap one another via Ted the Bellhop (Tim Roth,(...) .

It is Ted's first day on the job and it just so happens to be one of the busiest days of the year for the hotel (New Year's Eve). Relieving the old bellhop who'd worked there for fifty years, Ted is given sage advice that eventually falls apart on him (mostly related to sex, accountability, and keeping one's own council.)

The first episode is entitled "The Missing Ingredient." A clutch of witches inhabits a hotel room and they try to stir up incantations to revive a lost sexual sisters. Sammi Davis, Amanda De Cadenet, Valeria Golino, Ione Skye, Lili Taylor, Alicia Witt, and sex-pot Madonna round out the cast here. All of the witches brings a required item to the resurrection ceremony ...except one. She forgot to bring the sperm of a young man to add to their concoction. Enter Ted the Bellhop who finds his manliness much in need. This was the weakest of the four stories, failing to develop the tale or any of its characters, thus making the entire thing fall flat on its cinematic butt (even though there were plenty of nice butts and boobs in it). (...) director Allison Anders misses his mark.

The next episode is "The Wrong Man." Sigfried (David Proval) and his wife Angela (Jennifer Beals) are having an interesting New Year's Eve playing a rather kinky game of tie-up-the-wife- and-see-what-happens. Ted is brought into their midst and the sparks start to fizzle. Is Sigfried gay? Is Angela psychotic? Funny thanks to David Proval's history as a film bad-guy, this one had potential thanks to director Alexandre Rockwell.

The third installment is "The Misbehavers." A husband and wife played by Antonio Banderas (...) and Tamlyn Tomita plan to spend a romantic evening out but have to take their two misbehaving kids with them. Or do they? Enter Ted the Bellhop again. They hire him to watch over the boy and girl while they're away. Porno channels, a dirty syringe, flames, and a dead hooker all await the husband and wife upon their return. More of a slapschtick homage to (...), this over-the-top episode was directed by (...) director Robert Rodriguez -- who loves to direct Antonio Banderas (they worked together on (...) and (...) Probably one of the more laugh-out-loud endings of the four.

The final short is "The Man From Hollywood" directed by and starring Quentin Tarantino (...). At the end of his shift as well as his wits, Ted is summoned to the penthouse suite where he gets involved with a wager between two very drunk Hollywood types. Norman (Paul Calderon) and Chester Rush (Tarantino) have a bet going that Norman can't light his cigarette lighter ten times in a row without it failing. If Norman succeeds, he'll get Chester's cherry and expensive car. If he doesn't, Norm will lose a finger. But none of his friends in the room want to be responsible for doing hacking it off should Norman lose the bet. Enter Ted again. Offered a large stack of (...) bills if he'll do it, Ted numbly picks up a meat clever and...

But we won't give away the ending.

Seeming more like a pet project than anything of note, this 1995 offering is entertaining but sorely bland. The Jerry Lewis antics of Tim Roth are admirable (Lewis also starred in a film entitled (...) but the homage to comedy of days gone by felt forced or missing.

There are still laughs to be found but don't expect too many chuckles.

4 out of 5 stars cult classic.......2007-05-28

If you are a Tarrintino fan you must buy this movie. It features four different stories, all with different directors. Must have for any cult classic fans.

1 out of 5 stars Please for the love of Christ don't watch this movie!.......2007-02-04

I'm not usually one to be critical of a thing and not back it with balanced insightful information, but I wasted enough of my life with this movie to go that deep. I would rather have spend the 90 minutes hammering my fingertips flats with a ball peen hammer. Just don't do it. It's not funny no matter your "mindset" or "frame of reference".

4 out of 5 stars FOUR STORIES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE.......2007-01-18

Bellhop (Tim Roth at his best) vs guests.

The first two stories suck (minus one star) with Maddona as herself.

The third story is priceless.(Antonio Banderas at his best as the head of the Latin Kings)

The fourth story is a great sequel to a "Twilight Zone" episode.(Bruce Willis and Quentin play themselves)

Marisa Tomei at her best as a crack-ho.
Kathy Griffin at her best as the hotel owner.

Adult content.

Worth having in your collection.
Once you see this, you'll want to share it with your friends.

3 out of 5 stars A surprise and worth many viewings .......2006-12-25

I'm not typically a Tim Roth fan, in fact the work he did in Planet of the Apes was so convincing I couldnt ever see him playing an enjoyable or particularly likeable character. From the moment Roths character goes out to start his shift at the hotel you get a feeling this guy has the best of intentions.

Each of the "Four Rooms" contains a different story, with different characters, Roth being the only connection between the four. Some smaller plot elements tie the four rooms together as well. These are slight and might be missed, but help to make the movie more whole.

My favorite "room" is the Tarintino room. Once you see Quentin you know things are going to get really funny, really dark, kind of weird but always worth the price of admisssion. His is the last of the four rooms though.

Antonio Banderas' room is also great. Although hes not a major part of this room, because the story focuses on his two kids in the scene, his reaction to the mischief the kids get into is awesome! Very fuuny.

Madonna has a nice little role as the head of a witch coven. In their room they are trying to raise a goddess, and need some "special" help from Roth.

Depending on how you like your comedies this movie may or may not be very funny to you. I liked it becuase I thought it was a bit smarter than slap stick comedies...Roths caricature of the proper British bellboy is the absolute best part of the movie as a whole.

Not perfect but worth owning and worth watching again and again.

Amazon.com essential video

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Dick Tracy is an action packed classic detective story. The movie features loads of bad guys that each has a unique visual presence throughout the movie. Warren Beatty gives a realistic and believable performance as Dick Tracy himself. For those looking for some nostalgic Madonna action, look no further. She's stylish and sexy in those black outfits she wears.

If you're looking for a fun night at the movies, this is a winner!

A lyrical and nostalgic film from director Robert Redford (Quiz Show, Ordinary People), based on the popular autobiographical novel by Norman MacLean, A River Runs Through It shows the best that modern filmmaking has to offer. The film chronicles two brothers coming of age in early-20th-century Missoula, Montana, under the stern tutelage of their minister father, played by Tom Skerritt (Top Gun). Their father instills in them a love of fly fishing, which for one brother (Brad Pitt) becomes a lifelong passion even as he sets out to become a newspaperman and struggles with his addiction to gambling. The other brother, Norman (Craig Sheffer), dreams of exploring the world outside of Missoula as he falls in love with a local girl (Emily Lloyd) who also dreams of broader horizons. Soon one brother must discover the true meaning of family loyalty when the other finds himself in deeper trouble than ever before. Redford, who also narrates the film, does a masterful job in re-creating the period and in drawing out affecting performances from his young cast. An Oscar winner for Philippe Rousselot's luminescent cinematography, this is a poignant and special film. --Robert Lane

4 out of 5 stars A story, an art........2007-06-22

A movie that had no popular resonance but exemplified the beauty of water, trout, family, the sun, and the richness of life yet unexplored. We are a dying species, this film perhaps captures a few of us who perceive the transience of life and the beauty of seeing into the moment.

The photography is a wonder, the theme is unique, the message is universal.

5 out of 5 stars Why I like this movie?.......2007-06-13

I'm not much of a fishing movie fan. But after watching this movie over 10 years ago, to make a long story short, I bought a fly fishing reel the next day and once I got the money to buy a fly rod, I bought a nice one. Got addicted to fly fishing and got better at it too. This movie is like a Jeep thing. It's either you like it or you wouldn't understand--the point that is. It's not about the river, it's about men and fishing. It just so happens you need a river to fly fish. Luckily I have one here.

5 out of 5 stars DOUBLE-SIDED DVD.......2006-10-29

Everyone knows the movie so my review is on the DVD itself. This is the first double-sided DVD I've seen. At first I was disappointed for the side I played first was not in letter-box version. The other side was, so I made a lable and put in on the non-letterbox side. Why would this be done? Who would want this movie if not in Cinemascope?

5 out of 5 stars One of The One-Hundred Greatest Films Ever Made.......2006-09-26

A River Runs Through It is a difficult film to review or even fairly comment upon. It is beautifully-filmed and overflowing with the sort of natural scenery---thick dark forests, cold, free-flowing rivers, wide-open skies---that in most movies would steal the show. It also features a cast of actors, Tom Skerit, Emily Lloyd, Craig Sheffer, Brad Pitt, giving what I will long remain convinced is the most outstanding performance of their careers. This classic 1991 motion picture (re-)tells the true story of writer Norman Maclean's youth and early adulthood nearly a century ago in the wilds of rural Montana. Norman is a deep, pensive person, in many ways the opposite of his younger brother Paul, a free-spirited daredevil whose adventurous nature is good-hearted but perilous, as everyone around him except Paul himself seems to see. Norman and Paul's father is an upstanding Presbyterian minister whose scholarly erudition and sternly eloquent sermons give way at frequent intervals to undertaking the great passion in his life: fly fishing. The Reverend Maclean loves nothing more than to take his sons to the river to fly fish for trout. On these trips the elder Maclean imparts life's lessons to the boys and passes on words of wisdom they will each go on to recall during the course of their lives.

Time passes in the film and we leave the boys as youths and rediscover them as young men. A visiting Norman has returned home in the 1920's, having completed college in the east. Paul is now a somewhat infamous regional newspaperman, who uses his articles to skewer corrupt local figures in business and politics. Where Norman is every bit as staid and responsible as his childhood hinted he would grow to be, Paul is a hard-drinking charmer whose fondness for high-stakes poker games in frontier saloons and nights out with the wilder of the local women stands at odds with his upbringing in the respected Maclean household. During the summer that follows Norman's homecoming after graduation, he and his brother and father once again return to the river and fly fish, Norman finds love with a beautiful girl from a neighboring town, and the entire Maclean family watches as Paul slowly destroys himself in a fast life he cannot seem to leave alone. The film tells the kind of engrossing, touching story that very few cinematic works do, and is one of the crowning jewels of modern motion picture achievement. A River Runs Through It is at times funny, at others profound, throughout it radiates its quality, and ultimately...

And ultimately I hope anyone reading this will see this great film for him or her self.

5 out of 5 stars Should be ranked as a classic.......2006-09-11

"River" has it all - the sure direction of Redford, excellent script and acting, and the breathtaking beauty of Montana. This is a nuanced film about two brothers on divergent paths and their complicated relationship with each other and their dad. But it's not corny or maudlin. The fly fishing sequences are symbolic in many ways. This is a great film all around, but would be worth buying just for Craig Sheffer's performance alone.

A glossy romantic comedy, The Best Man centers on four college friends and the women in their lives, all brought back together for a wedding. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) plays the title character, a young writer whose first novel is a barely fictionalized account of his college days, featuring barely fictionalized versions of all his friends. This novel hasn't yet been released, but ambitious TV producer Nia Long (Soul Food) has snagged an advance copy in the hopes of getting an early interview with Diggs. Unfortunately, when this advance copy begins circulating among the college gang, they discover it reveals some secrets that may have a disastrous effect on the wedding. The Best Man features a handsome, charming cast and a propulsive story, but the female characters are poorly developed and the male banter is, to say the least, chauvinistic. This banter is mostly to comic effect, but by the end it still leaves a sour taste that the movie's happy ending doesn't counter. With a particularly strong performance by Terrence Howard as an aimless but relentlessly honest member of the college quartet. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Best part.....the whole movie was done with thought-out class........2007-06-20

The beauty of this movie is that it truly likes and cares about the people inhabiting it. There are no cheap jokes or sight gags. The humor develops from real situations and real characters starting with Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs). Life is good for Harper. His first novel is about to be published. He is in a comfortable two-year relationship and it is the weekend of the wedding of Lance (Morris Chesnut) and Mia (Monica Calhoun), two of his closest college friends. The bad news is his novel is a thinly veiled account of his college years and an advance copy of the book has found it's way into the hands of another college friend, Jordan (Nia Long). Jordan has in turn read the book and passed it along to Harper's inncer circle of college freinds. The really bad news is now the advance copy is in the hands of the groom, Lance. And Lance will not be happy by what he reads.

The film is well performed across the board although special mention needs to be made of Taye Diggs in the lead. Diggs perfectly captures the arrogance and the fear of commitment that makes the character of Harper work. Morris Chesnut is also quite good as the groom Lance. Lance is a star running back who is torn by his love for Mia and all the oppurtunies his "star" status provides. Mia really has become the rock in this world, his key to becoming a better man and Christian. When Lance finally gets to the chapter that Harper has been so afraid of him reading his entire world is shaken and nothing is on solid ground. Chesnut nails the sense of frustration of a man who all of a sudden finds his house is build on quicksand. Powerful stuff and again, none of it seems forced or pushed. The victory for virtue as defined by this film, however, is not easy and does not rely on conventional finger waging notions and stereotypes. In fact, the most interesting and best acted character is Quentin (Terrence Dashon Howard). He slyly and wisely presents the argument that we are not meant to be monogamous, but he is consistent in not expecting men and women to live by a double standard. He is in many ways correctly cynical about all of his friends and the rest of us. It is a testament to confident story telling when a character presents a contradictory position so well. In addition, Quentin is hilariously madcap with his quips.

When we finally get to the wedding and hear the vows of the groom and bride as a celebration of their commitment and union, the movie literally blooms with sweetness and beauty. This may sound corny, but when it is well done as it was here, we have insatiable appetites for seeing people face their selfish expectations and hypocrisy to become true partners in love and life. It is of note that Spike Lee's company produced this movie. Apparently, the able writer-director, Malcolm D. Lee, is a relative. The setting is affluent, literate, intelligent, success driven, neurotically yuppie and entirely African-American. (We don't recall seeing a white face on the screen.) In this, Best Man offers a refreshing and powerful diversion from the heaviness of urban blight and racial oppression as the world of blacks on film. As real as these phenomena are, blacks are diverse in their accomplishments and social strata.

This likeable, feminist screwball comedy about several incidents of mistaken identity is remembered more as the film that made Madonna a movie star. She's flip, hip, and energetic as Susan, the wild tramp with whom bored, suburban New Jersey housewife Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette) becomes obsessed after reading of her sexual conquests in the personal ads. Of course, since Madonna essentially played herself, the role's hardly a stretch. Director Susan Seidelmen presents a series of zany incidents too complicated to recount, but the result is that Roberta swaps lifestyles with her fixation to explore New Wave culture on New York's Lower East Side. It's territory Seidelmen knew well as her more offbeat, indie debut, Smithereens, reveled in the same setting. But where Smithereens took a more edgy approach to its characters, Susan is a fairy tale romantic comedy, and eventually becomes as conventional as the suburban characters it mocks by settling conflicts with predictable Hollywood formulae. Still, there's much to be enjoyed. The film's at its funniest when juxtaposing New York hip and New Jersey suburbia, like when Arquette's straight, suit-and-tie husband dances with Madonna in a punk club. The performances, too, are engaging, especially Arquette and Aidan Quinn, playing a romantic film projectionist who becomes her grubby Prince Charming. --Dave McCoy

Description

If you know what to look for, you can find almost anything in the personal ads...including the loveof your life! Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) is "irresistible" (Newsweek) and, in her first starring role, pop star Madonna (Evita) gives a "marvelously comic" (Time) performance in this "delightful madcap comedy" (US) about mistaken identity. Bored New Jersey housewife Roberta (Arquette) fills her days by reading the personal ads and following an ongoing romance between "Jim" (Robert Joy) and "Susan" (Madonna), a mysterious drifter who leads the kind of free-spirited life about which Roberta can only dream. And dream she does, until the day she actually shows up at the couple's prearranged rendezvous in New York City...and after a bump on the head, a bout of amnesia turns Roberta into Susan and opens the door to intrigue, laughter and love!

5 out of 5 stars A Look At A Different Part Of Our Culture.......2007-01-20

If I made a list of top ten actresses that I find attractive and interesting, you would probably find Rosanna Arquette. This movie gained attention from Madonna's role, but Arquette's character is what makes this movie good.

There are things I didn't like about this movie. I didn't like a scene with Madonna toward the end; a little too suggestive. Also, while the plot made a desertion of a marriage seem acceptable, it isn't.

However, if you want to be entertained, and want to see a side of society that you may never have experienced, and can put up with worldliness, this is a movie you might enjoy. Of course, if you bring the kids, watch it with them!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Madonna.......2007-01-10

This has to be one of Madonna's better films. Her acting was pretty good, even though she was mainly being herself. The hair, the clothes, and the sassy attitude was all old school Madonna. The movie itself was quite entertaining with Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) having amnesia and thinking she is Susan. This mix-up has Roberta adjusting to a world completely opposite of her own and coming out of her shell. Even though Rosanna was supposed to be the main star, Madonna stole the show.

5 out of 5 stars Madonna restricted.......2006-12-17

'Desperately Seeking Susan' must be the only enjoyable Madonna-movie around, for its plot is largely carried by the capable actress Rosanna Arquette.

Director Susan Seidelman managed to restrict Madonna to the popstar-image shown in the clips of her mid-eighties songs. By doing so, Seidelman fully allowed this movie's plot & atmosphere to reflect the spirit of mid-eighties Manhattan. Which makes 'Desperately Seeking Susan' pretty enjoyable today.

4 out of 5 stars remember this???.......2006-07-29

gotta love this was sooo excited to see this. Madonna at her best (well in my opinion) and just pure 80's fluff and fun.
Relive the past, love the music and enjoy!! I know I did and have introduced this to a whole new generation with much enjoyment.

2 out of 5 stars Workout? Yah right! Dance instructional? Yah right!.......2007-02-07

I mean, she is pretty hot so that's cool, but don't expect much of a workout or much of a dance lesson!

I would save your money and just get a REAL dance instructional where you can learn to dance on your own and then THAT will be your workout!

The best ones I have found are How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. These are the cream of the crop!

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Best dance workout I've ever tried........2007-01-15

Ms. Grimes' teaching is energizing, friendly, fun, enthusiastic, and warm. I find the pace of the workout to be just right for me. She breaks down the moves and then puts them together. Each move has a name so it is easy to follow. I appreciate that she takes the time to include a warm-up and a cool-down that address the muscles that will be and have been used during the workout. As an added bonus, this DVD has an extra 10 minute workout which is pretty amazing. I have never seen a tape instructor come up with such a short workout that works that many body parts(abs, glutes, legs).

4 out of 5 stars Easier to follow then her African Beat DVD.......2006-11-18

This is a professionally produced dvd with chapter seclections, bonus performance of the dancers & a bonus general aerobic 10 min workout & comes in 5.1 dolby.
It's donw with her & 3 girls (1 a little chubby) & 2 guys on the usual stage.
There is a good extensive 12 min warm-up that does the neck turns, shoulder rolls, torso stretches, lunges & also works on the spine, quads & calves.
The dance itself is 16 min. She teaches "chag", step touches, schottische, lock step, snake, woopie hop, electric slide, wobble.
The cool down is a little bit of walking & some of the same lunges, etc.
She never goes in slower then tempo, but in this dvd she does break it down. Most still might find this fustrating considering the arms & legs move very differently.
There is a lot of repeating of the steps, both only a few steps back & also from the top many times since the moves only take 3-5 seconds to execute each.
She does joke around/ask how her dancers are doing & leaves in some errors to make it feel more like a class.

4 out of 5 stars "Do it again, baby".......2006-09-22

Of all my workout videos, I have to say that this is the most fun. MaDonna interacts with her dancers and they all seem to have fun while going through the motions, not fake smiling like people in other workouts I've seen. The moves aren't anything complicated- she breaks it down for you and does enough repetitions to have you eventually get it. I recommend that you watch the DVD first before actually trying the workout, so that you have some idea what to expect, unless you're a really quick learner. You can practice over and over if you want to perfect the combination, and it's a good workout that doesn't leave you soaked with sweat afterward (unless you've never worked out before- then I'd suggest you take it easy at first.)
The DVD comes with a warm up that's about 10-15 minutes, a combination that's about 20, and a cool down. You have the option of just working out to the music, which is nice if you've done it a lot like I have. If you don't want to go through all that, there's a 10-minute "bonus workout" that really has you feel the burn. MaDonna recommends that you do this bonus workout every day to get results. "Religion, it's a religion."
The dance at the end is cute too.

Its 25 years since Madonna first came to the attention of the world, and since then shes barely been off the chart, out of the papers or even come close to dropping off the public radar. Madonna - The Performance Review is a documentary film which concentrates on this extraordinary womans work as a dancer, a performer and an actress. From her astonishing music videos to her staggering live shows, and a reassessment of her often unfairly criticized film career, this program looks again at how she has entertained us for more than a quarter of a century to an extent few if any have ever come close to matching.
