Justy Ueki Tylor is an outstanding example of an odd anime type--the endearing dolt. Just as war is erupting between Earth and the Raalgon Empire, Tyler enlists in the United Planets Space Force because he wants "an easy life." Through plain dumb luck, he ends up in the wrong place at the right time and wins a promotion to captain of the Soyokaze ("The Gentle Breeze"), a broken-down battle cruiser manned by a crew of losers and misfits. Tylor's lack of interest in the crises at hand astounds and appalls his more serious subordinates, especially Lieutenant Makoto Yamamoto, a caricature of a dedicated anime hero, and the impatient Lieutenant Commander Yuriko Star. Tylor's fumbling success brings him to the attention of the 16-year-old Raalgon empress, who orders Captain Ru Baruba Dom to observe, then capture this puzzling enemy. The resulting misadventures are very silly and often funny, especially when they play as satires of the military mindset. Captain Tylor falters when the title character appears less irresponsible than stupid. Akito in Martian Successor Nadesico and Gawl in Generator Gawl are all improbable, comic heroes, but they command real abilities and share a dedication to their duties. Tylor's blithe disinterest in anything but "an easy life" (and the occasional pretty girl) veers between hilarious and irritating, which explains the divided opinions this series generates among fans. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Procastinators can succeed in life!.......2001-02-27

So what if you have no home. You walk around the streets daily. Your only clothing is a white raincoat that you never wash or change. Tylor is just your average bum with supernatural luck. Imagine destroying a billion dollar android by flirting with it. Then getting away with it while the entire base is looking for a supposedly super spy who had done it. Then not only that, he manages to get hardened terrorists to rethink about their life and bring them to tears. And the next moment Tylor becomes from a bum to the Captain of the Soyokaze spaceship. The story just goes along bringing laughs in every episode. I would say this was my favorite science fiction series.

Description

This is the first in a set of made-for-videotape (OVA) releases made shortly after the "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" TV series concluded production, and is sometimes known by fans as "Tylor's War". They deal with events that occur about six months after the conclusion of the Raalgon war. The shooting war is over. The undefeated Soyokaze has returned home and all should be right in the universe. It's not ... the Raalgon Empire has created an incredibly powerful and destabilizing new weapon system. With the urging of the Prime Minister, they're about to deploy it and when the UPSF forces realize this the choice is clear. These are desperate times.... The shape of the future will be determined by the actions of very unlikely allies. Their choices will be difficult and their situation may well be hopeless. Any hope for galactic peace rests on the most irresponsible man in history. Perhaps Tylor will stay awake for this. Includes several music video segments featuring the cast!

4 out of 5 stars if you've seen the TV, but not the OVA.......2001-06-28

WARNING: This is not the Tylor that you're used to. A lot of people in my anime club were lost by the OVA series. It's focused heavily on the peripheral characters, the story does NOT go the direction that most of the TV series fans had hoped it would, and it is 100% serious. The clever/silly humor from the TV series was dropped for a serious story line in the OVA.

Now that you have this warning, you're ready to approach these DVD's. It's been a few years since I've seen the fan-subs of the Tylor OVAs, but the DVD quality will be far better than the 10th generation tapes that I have. As I said above, the story is told in a different style from the TV series, but that doesn't mean that it's bad. Taken on their own, I really enjoy them. I just thought I should write this brief warning because, as I said, many fans of the TV series were very disappointed when the characters' motives and actions changed in the OVA.

2 out of 5 stars NOT the TV series.......2004-02-23

I absolutely loved the Captain Tylor TV series, and I couldn't wait to see the OVAs. Unfortunately, I was badly disappointed. There is a plot, but half of the series is taken up by side stories about various characters that do nothing to further the main action. Moreover, Captian Tylor just wasn't the same hilarious, happy-go-lucky guy I had come to know and love. Though he hides it well...to me, it almost seemed like the Irresponsible Captian had become...responsible.

Go ahead and watch the OVAs, if you want. They're not horrible. Just don't expect them to be like the TV series.

5 out of 5 stars Captain Tylor ...........its still GREAT!!!.......2003-05-17

I watched this a little worried. I had heard that the OVA collection was not as good as the original series. I am writing this to say that what I heard was totally WRONG!!!!
This series is just as good, its different but it's still Tylor at its finest.
The First DVD in the 3 DVD set is the same style and humor of the original series, it almost feels like "the lost episodes." After the first DVD the other two DVDs change to a different style of animation and the series changes a little but not for the worse.
The one problem that I kept hearing was that there was a more serious tone in this series. This is true for 4 of the side story episodes, but its serious for the very reason that Tylor is not really in them. He makes small cameos but other then that the stories focus on other members of the Soyokaze while they are on ground time. Without Tylor the other characters WOULD act this way. I appreciate the fact that I got to see them in action without Tylor because it made me appreciate them a little more, as well as the humor and liveliness Tylor brought to their lives and to the story.
I do not want to spoil anything detailing the story or the series so let me just say that this series is a wonderful series to watch, its a little shorter then the original but its still worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2002-01-23

I think that this series is as good as the original box set. It is a little more complex plot structure but still presents the most attractive aspects of the original series. I cannot recommend this enough. A real winner.
