Description

Good DVD, mediocre dub.......2004-01-03

INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball manga was created by Akira Toriyama, the same person who was previously responsible for the Dr. Slump series, as well as the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in America) series of video games. In the latter half of the eighties, Dragon Ball became a Japanese anime. And when the series drew to a close, he created a follow-up series - Dragon Ball Z. This one also became an anime. Nearly six years after its original Japanese release, Dragon Ball Z finally arrived in America. Unfortunately, Toei Animation (the company that created the anime) added in a number of filler episodes, and FUNimation (the owner of the American rights to the series) was forced to make large amounts of edits so that the show would meet American television standards. Though their dub voice actors actually were pretty good, they had a tendency to mistranslate some information and use a good deal of stupid dialogue. This package contains the second batch of episodes of the series. Read on for my review.

EPISODE SUMMARIES:
-The Legend Of The Saiyans: For the next stage of Goku's training on King Kai's planet, he must whack Gregory, an ultra-fast grasshopper, on the head with a huge mallet. King Kai also tells Goku about the history of the Saiyan race. This episode marks the first appearance of Gregory, as well as the first appearance of Baba in the Z series.
-A Black Day For Planet Earth: The Saiyan warriors, Nappa and Vegeta, arrive on earth. Goku is wished back to life, but won't arrive back on Earth until the next day, because he must cross Snake Way again. The two villains go after the two highest power levels they can detect on the planet, which are Piccolo and Gohan. First appearance of the properly colored Nappa and Vegeta.
-The Battle Begins... Goku Where Are You?: Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu all unite at the point where the Saiyans are. Vegeta is interested in fighting Goku, so to kill time, he has Nappa grow some Saiba Men (little green creatures that Saiyans use to wipe out worlds faster.) Vegeta suggests that the six of them have some one-on-one duels with the Saiba Men. Realizing this will kill some time until Goku shows up, they accept. Tien goes first.

EPISODE OPINIONS:
The Saiyans' dialogue was butchered for the dub - they altered the dialogue to imply that people survived the destruction they caused around them (you actually have to see the episodes to know what I mean.) Fortunately, the serious mood of these episodes results in less comic relief - and a much more serious mood. Also, did anyone notice that the DVD cover got the colors of Nappa and Vegeta's scouters mixed up?

DVD:
This DVD is good because it has better picture quality than a VHS tape, but horrible because it only contains the edited dub, and not an uncut sub like later Dragon Ball Z DVDs. I recently heard word that FUNimation will be redubbing the Saiyan Saga and the former half of the Frieza saga, so don't go out and buy this right away.

OVERALL:
Overall, Doom does a pretty good job continuing the Dragon Ball Z series - but the dub could have been SO much better. Although Dragon Ball Z is an excellent anime, I don't recommend this. I recommend seeing the series in its uncut, original Japanese glory; this dub doesn't do it justice.

Goku trains with Gregory in this DVD, a grasshopper with an attitude, and learns two major attacks, the Kaio-Ken, and the unstoppable Spirit Bomb. Goku also learns more about his past, as the Saiyans finally make it to earth. They meet up with the Z fighters as Goku races back to earth to help his friends. Although action wise this isn't the best DBZ, it really gets the plot moving and shows how Goku learns his two attacks. This DVD is a necessity, although not a lot of fighting the plot helps. If you've bought the four before this one, then you don't need my review to know it is going to be good.

Only buy every Third DVD.......2000-05-20

DBZ is a big waste of time, because every episode is a 2 minute story stretched to 30minutes. If you REALLY need to watch this, its on Cartoon network for free in the afternoon. So don't waste your money on DBZ. Buy Evangelion: Neon Genesis.

Listen, people might think this is dragon ball z but this is not dragon ball z. This is a bunch of edited bull-crap, completely slaughtered by funimation. Trust me, i'm a true dragon ball z fan, and this is no kid show.
