    4 out of 5 stars Cool OVA.......2007-01-10

This is a good buy. Well worth the money. Although it's a little hard to follow the storyline if you haven't seen the tv series. The OVA's take place in different times from the tv series. But I would recommend this anime.

5 out of 5 stars My two cents on KOR.......2005-10-20

I thought KOR was an entertaining series. Its been years since I have watched this title. The animation wasn't too bad. Watching Godzilla films helped enhance my viewing pleasure. Its a series worth checking. Kasuga is 15 who meets two women Hikaru and Madoka, Hikaru clams she's his girlfriend but Madoka seems to be his true love.

5 out of 5 stars The OVA series that hooked me on anime.......2005-07-27

10 years ago I watched this OVA series on rented VHS tapes (back then, only this set was available in commercial release, the TV series was not released commercially in the US until the late 90's). I believe I could have turned my back on anime at any time... up until I watched these OVAs.

Yes, both the OVAs and the TV series revolves around the high school love triangle between Kyosuke, Madoka, and Hikaru. But for those of us past high school age, there is an element of sweet nostalgia in Orange Road. The memories of loves won, lost, and merely dreamed about come flooding back. "Dance in the memories" is more than just a song title from the series.

Yes, Kyosuke is a wimp, but with a heart of gold. Bear in mind the problem he faces is that he is not sure how Madoka feels about him. In traditional Japanese culture, if the girl refuses the boy's invitation to "go steady", he has no second chance. That's it. End of story. So Kyosuke is tormented... he sees signs that Madoka *might* care for him, then he sees signs that she doesn't. So until he is sure, he waits and dates Madoka's best friend Hikaru.

These episodes flesh out some issues. The OVA "I Was a Cat, I Was a Fish" is the one out of these 8 that I really don't care for. "White Lovers" is, at it's heart, a story of the true depth of Kyosuke's love for Madoka and what he is willing to risk to prove it.... and incidentally one of the all time favorites of a number of long time KOR fans. While the previous reviewer liked the movie "I Want to Return to That Day", many oldtime KOR fans detested it.

Can you do without this set? Sure. But if you enjoy romantic comedy, or if you are a KOR fan, you MUST get this set.

4 out of 5 stars Final episodes, movie, for classic romatic triangle series........2004-01-31

I'm going to approach this differently than most of my reviews, because there's a lot to like about this box set. Saying that, I have to admit that there was not much of a compelling reason story wise to create it. The set consists of three DVDs; the first two each contain four OAV (direct to video) episodes, of Kimagure Orange Road made after the TV series. The third DVD is a series-ending movie. While my overall rating for the set is four stars, the movie rates five stars, therefore, episodes are only fair to good.

What's good about the episodes is the music and animation. Japanese OAV releases generally have a higher standard than the TV series episodes. The quality of the animation lives up to that, and they feature many good songs. Unfortunately, beyond that these are simply fan episodes. Someone determined there was still a market for KOR stuff, and cranked out a very derivative set of episodes. The OAV episodes place the KOR principal characters in mostly rehashed situations, created before in the TV series. They exceeded some of the limits of the Manga, as I would call it, going "too real" without just cause. What I mean is things like adding gunplay to a series that was essentially tame.

The gem of the box set is the movie. It exceeds the limited reality of the TV series as well, but "in a good way". Since it was to be the ending of the KOR series, it ended the key storyline abruptly. The entire KOR series was about the romantic triangle between Kyosuke, and two girls he was involved with, Madoka and Hikaru. The triangle, kept alive, because Kyosuke, was one of "those" anime characters, which cannot make a decision. The series became stale, because most people knew that Madoka was his true love, even though he went with Hikaru, as boyfriend and girlfriend. The movie has a very changed, more adult Kyosuke, making the decision, right or wrong, and then sticking with it. Rarely have more genuine emotions been on display in an anime of this type.

Reasons to buy the box set:

    1. Excellent music, a cut above your usual anime music songs.
    2. Fine animation quality, OAV releases are high quality in Japan.
    3. Great series ending movie, if it has to end this was the way to do it.

Reasons not to buy the box set:

    1. Derivative episodes, if you've seen the TV series there's not much new here.
    2. Some OAV episodes overstep the "reality" limits the series was based on.
    3. The movie (and OVA episodes) is going to be released separately.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Finale to a Great Series.......2005-05-15

This is a great DVD. The final three episodes are some of the greatest the series has to offer. The first episode, however, is nothing that special. In "Hikaru Passes Away: And Then There Were None" Madoka asks Hikaru and Kasuga to taste test some of the items she wants to put on ABCB's new menu. Kasuga, wanting to be alone with Madoka, wishes Hikaru would get ill and have to stay home, just for that day. But then she dies. It's not like this is meant to be a really emotional episode (at least I hope not) because anyone with half a brain should be able to realize that they're not actually going to kill off Hikaru, and that in the end of the episode you'll find out what's really going on (I'm not going to think that I just ruined the ending for you if you haven't watched this episode yet, due to the obviousness that she won't die). It ends up being kind of stupid, humorous at best, because of some of the radical things the characters to in mourning her death (the government makes it a national holiday, Kasuga's dad quits being a photographer, Kurumi and Manami...forget it, I won't want to spoil that for you). But overall it's not horrible.

A real treat is the following episode, "One Snow-White Night! Two, Alone Inside a Gondola," which holds plenty smiles for radical "Kyosuke and Madoka" fans. First, on a skiing trip, Kazuya decides to help Yuusaku get closer to Hikaru. So he tricks Kasuga into going into Hikaru and Madoka's hotel room while Madoka is showering (and Hikaru's somewhere else). Since the rooms are identical he doesn't realize he's in the wrong room and he begins changing. Then Kyosuke (in his boxers) walks into the bathroom, only to find Madoka showering! He wonders why she's showering in his room. Hikaru then walks in the room, and Madoka (out of the shower and into a towel) grabs Kasuga and the two try to hide from Hikaru in the bathroom, which means being squeezed together on the floor of the bath tub, out of Hikaru's sight. This goes on for a while as Kurumi and Manami try to find out if Madoka and Hikaru's bathroom is identical to theirs. After this is over, Madoka and Kasuga go off to ski without the rest of the group's company, and end up getting stuck in one of the gondolas together (a ski lift, if you don't know what a gondola is). He and Madoka worry that the others will worry about them, which prompts Kasuga to try to move the gondola with the power. He messes up, and ends up breaking the gondola's windows, letting all the snow and cold air come in. He and Madoka huddle together in a blanket. Kasuga can't teleport because he used most of his power earlier when he broke the windows by accident. With the last ounce of his power, he tries to communicate with Kazuya, his last hope. I'll leave it at that.

Then, in the final two-part series-closer, Kasuga finds out about Madoka's first love, with whom she shared her first kiss and made a promise with to meet at the big tree in 6 years. Kasuga (not bothering to realize that 6 years ago means that Madoka was 9) gets extremely jealous. He ends up going back in time 6 years, where he finds out who Madoka's first love is (I'm not telling)...and he's even there when the two share their first kiss! Then Kasuga's grandpa sends Madoka back in time 6 years, where she and Kasuga meet up (both are trapped in the past). Then, Kasuga gets trapped in a parallel universe where he never existed. He then meets Madoka for the first time in ABCB where she's still a punk because Kasuga was never there to turn her around. And soon things are resolved and the ending will leave you grinning. Now you better pop in those OAVs and watch the two movies!

Back In the early 90's when I Started my anime collection. This one of the series. I felled in love with. Now With this movie. I have the whole series on Dvd. I even have all the soundtrack. One thing I was most gratful for was they never Dub. Until New Kimagure Orange road; Summer's Beginning. Because of this, it was the only reason I couldn't give it 5 star's but I enjoyed the Movie. But you must watch the Ova and tv part first.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favs!.......2007-01-10

This movie is one of my all time favorite anime movies. The animation is great and so is the story line. I would definitely recommend this to someone who likes anime and even if you don't like anime, it still has a great storyline!

5 out of 5 stars Different perspective as I grew up.......2005-11-21

I watched KOR when I was a teenager; in fact, my age is about the same as Kyosuke, Madoka, and Hikaru in the show. Surprisingly, I found myself appreciating the animation, especially this final OAV movie and the original movie, more so as a full grown adult right now with kids. The show is about love and commitments one made in life, whatever that might be. While there might be some silliness in the movie (and the original TV show), those silliness only enable the characters and the audience to ask the question "what if's".

The only question I have is why Amazon added "Vol. 1" after the title; this is a movie, not a OAV series.

4 out of 5 stars A nice upbeat final OAV for the series........2005-06-29

First, I should let you know that the DVD I bought had a different cover. Same movie, however.

If you have watched all the TV episodes, the other OAVs, and the final movie for KOR (I want to return to that day--the inevitable and heartrendingly beautiful/painful resolution of the love triangle), you very likely have as much love for the series as I do, and can overlook (or embrace) the occasional bits of cheesy silliness that were present in all of KOR except the final movie, instead submersing yourself in the true beauty and sweetness of the series.

This OAV (which is NOT part of a new series. It's called "new" to show that it comes AFTER "I want to return to that day") has the cheese, and has the sweetness and fun, just like the other OAVs did.

Although I believe this OAV could stand alone, I think it is much better suited to be watched after someone's seen a good portion of the TV episodes, one or two OAVs, and absolutely the Final Movie (which is, IMO, stunningly good.)

This OAV makes a good postscript to the series by showing not only that life and joy and friendship go on, but also showing how they went on in the lives of the characters we've come to love. I'd give it five stars, but not for anyone watching it without having seen the series, so I'm leaving it at four.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that sets the way.......2004-12-21

This was one of the first anime shows I ever watched (disregarding of course the televised Speed Racer, Rainbow Bright, and the like in the early 80s) and the first I fell in love with. I was floored when AnimEigo picked it up to distribute and so happy with the result in the subbing and packaging.
However, I do have to say that I am not pleased with the price. It was 2 years ago that I picked up the entire TV series DVD box set for $50 from a Japanese vendor. The show is amazing and trend setting for such series as Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma Nibun No Ichi" and Ken's "Love Hina." The story sucks you in so emotionally like in . But with only 3 episodes per disc, I feel cheated by the company that brought me so much joy back in the early 90s.

Do not negate this show, it is amazing and breath taking and very emotional.

If you like drama/romance anime, look in to these as well: Marmalade Boy, Love Love?, To Heart-remember my memories-, Kanon, First Kiss Story, and there are tons more. Hope you do get to see K.O.R. though, it's extremely memorable.
