Virus - Virus Buster Serge (Vol. 1)

This 1997 TV series is set in Neo-Hong Kong, 2097, when the Incubator is attacking Earth with a virus that turns bio-machines into metamorphic monsters. The elite warriors of S.T.A.N.D. fight in mecha suits that recall the ones in Bubblegum Crisis. The women have pneumatic figures that defy gravity; the men are brooding muscleheads. Director Masami Obari (Battle Arena Toshiden, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture) disguises the cheapness of the production with fast cutting, dramatic shadows, and flamboyant colors. But the story is a morass of mysteries, relationships, dream sequences, etc. When Serge, the title character, tries to kill S.T.A.N.D. commander Raven, Raven greets him with the words, "You are loved." Raven recruits Serge for S.T.A.N.D., and he quickly becomes their top warrior. Fans of the related video game may not be troubled by the gaps in logic. (Unrated; suitable for ages 14 and older: nudity, violence, tobacco use, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Threats and revelations pile up, as this sci-fi adventure by Masami Obari, the director of Battle Arena Toshiden, continues. In the war against the Virus, Serge and his fellow S.T.A.N.D. officers are taunted by a sardonic jokester in a cyclops mask who identifies himself as "The Brain Lizard." Mirei is infected with the Virus when she attempts to track a cyber-murderer, but she's saved by a group of her old friends and fellow hackers. S.T.A.N.D. captures another hacker, Ryu, who used to be a buddy of Serge's. He reveals that S.T.A.N.D.'s star officer is the clone of an old scientist, Dr. Milan Treyn. Obari once again tries to disguise the cheapness of the animation with aggressive cutting, dramatically lit shadows, and flamboyant colors, but it's obvious that the artists can't even keep the characters on model. Lookin Good.......2003-03-02
Volume 2 doesn't exactly answer a great deal of the questions, but the plot flows well, stays on track, and sets a course for a tie-in of answers in a major past event or two. I REALLY enjoyed this volume after finding the first mediocre and if Volume 3 does a good job, this could really be one of my personal favorite anime series.
Plus, looking back at even the mediocre volume 1 it almost seemed that way due to the introduction of plot elements that look to be coming together. Everything has a purpose, so if volume 3 ties it together well I can see this title getting future viewings. Recommended to any Obari fan!

Reminscent of "Bubblegum Crisis", very cool! 4.5*.......2003-01-21
I really enjoy anime such as "Bubblegum Crisis" and when watching this anime, it reminded me of "Bubblegum Crisis meets Gatchaman" and the action is intense and I just felt that this anime television series was just so impressive.
Almost six years later, Manga Entertainment has chose to release this anime television series in the United States and fans of anime series such as "Bubblegum Crisis", "Gatchaman" or "Evangelion" will not be disappointed. It's a solid series about artificially enhanced humans and what happens when digital viruses start to control their hosts. Sounds like Boomers from "Bubblegum Crisis" but the difference is the team known as S.T.A.N.D. who are a group of two men and two females with a mysterious teammate or rival named Serge.
The anime is full of action and characters that are very interesting that you'll want to watch more and more. The theme song "Rainy Day and Day" by Dragon Ash is awesome and the DVD. What about the DVD?
Well, first let me remind you that this is a television series from back in 1997. The graininess is evident in this anime compared to other television series and it does show it's age. Why that is, I don't know but it's not as crisp and clear compared to other anime television series but it's not terrible but videophiles may be bothered by it.
The other thing that will only bother purists of the original TV series is the change of opening and ending segments. As well as the chapter stops not being at the beginning of the episode perse (beginning of opening segment) but after the opening sgement. Also, the lack of romanizations or translations for the lyrics. For me, this was a bit bothersome but for those who have never seen the series, they probably will not even know this or care.
As for special features, like most mecha related anime, you have your character designs and mecha designs and character information.
All in all, "Virus" is still one heck of an anime to watch and a deserves a placement in your collection if you are a fan of the different anime I mentioned earlier.
Check it out!
