An Underrated Boy-Changes-Into-Girl Action Romp.......2006-04-10
With the conclusion of Birdy the Mighty, I now realize that a lot of people are missing out on one of the better anime OVAs not being watched. This anime has everything; great animation, lovable characters, good action, and a lot of comedy. In fact, if not for the less-than-stellar dubbed track, I would have given Birdy the Mighty: Final Force a five instead of a four.
In this the second volume of the OVA series, Birdy continues her battles against crime, and more specifically against android super warriors and a mad scientist hell bent on turning mankind into a bunch of fighting monsters. And Tsutomu has girl troubles, family troubles, and, by the end, hair troubles. Though the story isn't complex in any way, it's definitely funny and action-packed and makes up for a few missing plot elements and a rather unfinished ending. But still, Birdy the Mighty only follows the norm of most anime, and that is an ambiguous ending, so I can't be too disappointed with this, especially since it tries to put somewhat of a finish to the story.
As for the bad, I can't help but notice, once again, the oddity in voice-acting choices. Though in my last review I said I had gotten used to it, the feeling that the voices weren't exactly right came back when I came back to the series. It's not particularly bad, but at times the voices don't match the characters of Birdy and Tsutomu (see my review of Double Trouble for more). U.S. Manga Corps, though, is one of smaller anime publishers out, and they aren't exactly known for landing the well-known voice-actors found in ADV, Geneon, or Bandai productions, so it is to be expected at least.
As for recommendations, this is definitely one of the most underrated anime around. With the exception of so-so voice acting, this anime has everything that most anime fans want in their anime. If you enjoyed Mezzo or Burst Angel, or any of the other more comedic action series out, then Birdy the Might is a great choice for you.
Psychic Superheroine Lays the Smackdown - Birdy the Mighty.......2005-09-07
Unfortunately, Birdy the Mighty is only a 2-DVD Original Video Animation and not a full season-worth of anime. "Final Force" is the second DVD out of two, and it is done in the fashion of Genocyber and Angel Cop (although a little more tame). It's got the solution to all your psychic battle needs!
Birdy is a space cop that is hot on the trail of a crime mastermind. When she landed on Earth, she accidentally killed our buddy Tsutomu, and now she has to share his body so that she can give her life force to him and repair his life in the process. Expect a little bit of gender-bending and a lot of comic-book style super hero fighting.
Look for "Double Trouble" to get the first DVD of this OVA and you'll be set for some old-school anime smackdown!
Great Anime Show!.......2001-02-17
Seriously I havn't seen such good anime in a long time! Humoristic and supernatural fight give this video a very well balanced composition. A great succesor for "Patlabor".
Birdy the Mighty: Final Forcer Review.......2000-12-17
This is one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. It is about this boy (Tsutomu) who is almost killed by Birdy. The only way to save this boy is for Birdy to merge with Tsutomu. So pretty much the story is about this boy who wants to have a normal life but has a Girl in his head that frequently talks to him. Yet they can switch the control of the body and it will then turn into the physical body of the mind that is controlling it. It was a really weird idea for the director but it sure made a really good movie. If you haven't seen this movie yet I recommend seeing it. The anime is really high in quality and the plot is good also. See this movie if you want to watch something different!
